Reviews of El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument
Yü Wu
Little public plaza celebrating Mexican culture and people. Lovely place to sit down and relax.
Once a Mexican friend and I were walking from Union Station to Grand Central Market and when we passed the monument, he immediately recognized the style.

It’s a very nice place. You can buy souvenirs, foods, or making a whole album of wedding here. Hehe. It’s just fine place for dating couples.
ORLANDO A VASQUEZ HERNANDEZ (El Gallo Negro)
Was there for dia de los Muertos. Had a blast got some churros and my sugar skulls. Fun time. Shame I only happens once a year. It's a celebration of life. I love. If you get a chance to go I recommend it

El Pueblo de Los Angeles, is my favorite old town stop when taking my out of town visitors out for a tour!
It’s the festive place for history, architecture, fun entertainment and shopping, at the birthplace of LA!
The original office and store buildings in Los Angeles began here!
La Placita as it’s called by locals, features the famous gazebo with a 360° stage. Most events here are played to Main St. side audiences, as they sit under the Moreton Bay fig tree branches.
I’ve made many stops here with my tour groups, giving time to see some of the shows, view the historical references, see the restored old buildings and shop with the vendors at Olvera Street.
It’s even possible to attend services at LA’s oldest church, Our Lady Queen of Angeles Catholic Church.
Restrooms are underneath the gazebo and along Olvera Street. There’s additional restrooms across S Main Street to the right of the old church.
Parking is located further along S Main, before the end of the block.
Travelers passing thru Union Station can easily stop off at the plaza to have a look.
I feel appreciation to the City of Los Angeles for it’s preservation efforts here, and for providing a popular gathering place for festivities.
I’m especially thankful for all of the designated tour vehicle space, more accommodating than any other place on my tour!
Zack KC
Beautiful historical area, where Los Angeles was founded.
Casandra Church
A pretty street, there are many vendors selling souvenirs, the price is not expensive, the name is Spanish, remember to go to the Central Station to take a walk before buying a small thing and then go back.
Kaz M
The oldest LA buildings are here. They would make you feel humble. So much contribution Chicano community made to LA, including providing an USO canteen during ww2. We will be back when my kid is a bit bigger to learn the history. We must preserve this place!
Mandy Slawson
El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument encompasses several blocks located north of the LA Civic Center and right across Alameda Street from Union Station. The Plaza is a nice centerpiece with a central pavilion where cultural events are held quite often. There are trees and places to sit around the central plaza area. There are several historic buildings within El Pueblo, most notably the Pico House and the Plaza Catholic Church which is still an active parish church. The Monument also is home to the Fire Department Museum and the Chinese American Museum which chronicles the accomplishments and struggles of the Chinese American community in Los Angeles. The Monument also includes Olvera Street which has historic and cultural resources as well as shops and restaurants. Very informative and interesting to learn about the origins of LA.

We've been coming here for more than 20 years and as always the atmosphere is great and the food here at Juanita's is always the BEST. This is a most if you are ever in Los Angeles in Olvera Street.
The Yanez Ohana from Coachella
Maryam Outadi
It was a traditional Mexico bazaar which was so cool you can find all kind of hand made there.
Matthew Egbert
It was fun, not that much to do but it was fun seeing it. There are celebtions many times per year that look interesting.

El pueblo is a historic park that documents that beginning and growth of Los Angeles. On September 4, 1781, eleven families of pobladores (44 persons including children) arrived at this place from the Gulf of California to establish a pueblo which was to become the City of Los Angeles. This colonization ordered by King Carlos III was carried out under the direction of Governor Felipe de Neve." The small town received the name El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora Reina de los Ángeles sobre El Rio Porciúncula, Spanish for The Town of Our Lady Queen of the Angels on the Porciuncula River. In 1850, shortly after California became part of the United States, Los Angeles was incorporated as a city. As the City grew, the commercial and cultural center began to move south away from the Plaza, along Spring Street and Main Street. (~from wikipedia)

Its like a piece of Mexico was transplanted into LA. Lots of history, food, and culture packed in a tiny area. Weekends are best to visit as there are cultural performances
Eileen Faxas
It’s a slice of old Mexico in downtown LA. Always full of affordable shopping, happy hour specials, casual Mexican fare, a dash of history, and on occasion, a band in the plaza that invites the spontaneous to dance.
Randy Chandra
A historic area in LA, near Union Station, where we can find mexican culture and food. Quite OK for strolling around, but can be crowded.
Christian Alvarado
Nice little history location. Nothing special really. Tends to be little Mexican events for the public and tourists to see and experience. Drove from north cali to see what Los Angeles has to offer. This was one of my to see places and it's nice place to see once but that's all.
Judith Hengeveld
Really touristic place to walk around, lots of stands and has a Mexican feel to it. You can visit the visa adobe for free, which gives you a perspective of life back then.
Sheriff Hoyt
I loved this historical place; and I would like to get back again. I visited La Placita Olvera on Sunday. It was full of alegría muchos persons bailando. I recommend el lugar con un 100%. Visiten la Placita Olvera ajua!
Robert M
This has been here so long is almost historic. Built where Chinatown was before Union Station was built, it's adjacent to the old church. There's a lot to see in the area and Olivera Street is fun. Try the tacos at El Cielito and the churros at Mr. Churro.
Jose Garcia
Dia de lis muertos (day of the death) festivities, good food and shoping.
Sofia A
Very interesting place to see and walk threw
Patrick English
Vibrant, colorful and beautiful place to take in the food, music, culture and clothes of Mexico. Highly recommend weekend afternoon visits to have the full experience.

Mario Andrade
Great Historical information. Great Architecture. Free!!!
Daniela CG
Great place to visit alone, with friends, family or a date! Not only do you get some LA history (it's where the city was founded), but there's an open-air bazaar with many Mexican little shops and also some great places to eat. Cross the street & visit the beautiful Union Station too while you're there!
Mohammed Tawfeeq
You can find very nice and Mexican stuff (souvenirs), especially at California casa.
Paul Phillips
This historical park was part of a tour I took while on a cruise. Overall the park was a great visit with vendors selling souvenirs, food and clothing. The tour guide recommended the churros which received a thumbs up from several other people in my group. Although this is a good place to take the kids there was a downside for me. I visited the restrooms that are located directly beneath the park central display and found them to have several homeless men living in the stalls. The restrooms had zero toilet paper, soap or paper towels which I attributed to the homeless using all the resources. This area made me nervous and I quickly left. When I asked my wife about her restroom experience she said the restrooms we're fine and there were no homeless women there. After my wake-up call we did notice several homeless men sleeping at the park. I would not consider this to be a great place to take your kids. Seems a bit dangerous.
Jhonny Mnz
Legendary Placita Olvera very complete cultural land ,recommended 100% with kids or with friend can enjoy museums, restaurants, drinks,if you come from far the union station is crossing street
Madeleine Neilly
Lovely restaurants everywhere. Mexican atmosphere. Great!
KC Vavra
What a great day at El Pueblo! We went to the variety of exhibits around the square, and were really impressed with the museums. We also arrived before noon, so we were able to get an individualized tour of the square. The tour was fun, and we were really happy to learn a lot more about the history of the square off the beaten path. Definitely try to show up before the daily tours, since this was the highlight.
Afterwards, you can check out many of the shops and events in El Pueblo, but definitely remember the history of the oldest area of LA.
solisjimmy13
Wonderful place to visit and Shop. I always stop by and end up taking more than I plan back home. They had a big open space with the lot of music and dancing. However the regulars there were kind of rude to my elderly mother who wanted to sit down for a minute on one of the benches that was not being occupied. As soon as she sat down two of the ladies that were dancing came over and try to remove her from the bench. Probably because they thought she was alone I however was standing in the background where everybody else was. Once I saw this I approached them and explained that she was just trying to sit down for a minute and take a break. They however said that they have their own rules there and felt that they were the only ones that can use the benches. Needless to say not all of them felt the same way another group of women invited my mother to sit with them. A few bad apples don't really deserve to give the entire place a bad review. I do however like to give others an idea of what a place is like.
Mahr Amer
Great music and custom. Maher Amer
Jose Amaral Jr
Very nice area to experience and see what the culture and heritage is and remember where your roots come from. You can dine, see music performances, dancers and various other fun things to see and do. Parking can be a little difficult on the weekends so keep that and mind and depending where you park it might cost a bit more than other places.
Paul Peterson
Every village, town, or city has a beginning. If you want to take a look at what some of the original buildings that were built in LA, know who the original inhabitants were, and understand the foundation of culture, then this museum is your stop. There are interesting exhibits and a nice docent staff. It's free to enter and donations are welcome.
Emanuela Rossetti
It is the historical mexican neighborhood of Los Angeles. The atmosphere inside the area is particular, i felt like being in a place living in the past. It is very nice to go around and to take a look to the shopping area, there are some great restaurants and take away places in which you can eat local food.
Efrain Gonzalez
Food was warm and good just not super grate. I ate chills rellenos, I've had way better not saying these are not good.. A fun experience and the live mariachi, of course you pay them, but over all a fun time.
K Sifuentes
You can't visit L.A. without stopping here. Great restaurants with good food. There are plenty of shops with great Mexican decor, nick nacks, artwork and apparel. It's a nice tourist attraction filled with history. I highly recommend it!
Marshall Lawrence
Right now they have some decorations up and lanterns, possibly for a special occasion. I really like squares like this which are surrounded by culture and history. I would love to be here when a band could be playing on stage too.
Istvan Farkas
Really cool place to visit
Behzad Taimur
This is the historical Los Angeles. This is where the city began. No Pueblo - No Hollywood! Think of that. Pretty neat place. Alot to see and do. The Avila is maybe the best thing. There's also a cool market. Plenty of monuments and sculpture. Alot of historical buildings. There's also alot of historical buildings in the neighborhood. Make sure to go check them out. Public bathrooms aren't the best. But ah well, as long as you don't have to go - You'll have s great time!
Ken Mann
Wonderful open space with a band stand right up against Olvera Street. So there is often music for dancing, food booths, and today a Mini that's using this area to shoot a commercial. Toyota was here two weeks ago, Verizon four weeks ago. Lots of historic buildings and small museums. Short walk to Union Station.
Ana Lara
Is a nice place to visit they have good restaurants and souvenirs to buy.
Ken and Alicia Lund
Historic building adjacent to the Old Plaza.
Kammy
Awesome place to relax and have fun, the park itself is quite a small place area wise, but there's a neat bench that spans most of the perimiter which makes it awesome to come hang out and relax at with lots of friends.
It's very close to union station as well which makes it an attractive alternative for long metrolink/amtrak waits on days where there is pleasant weather.
Shan Guo
I didn't go inside maybe much nice there.
Elijah Novoa
Great place to visit when you are on a stop over at the Union Station. Right across the street. You walk over and get a small experience of Mexican life. There's food, dancing and Art to enjoy.
Ezequiel “Zeke” Barragan
Loud Mariachi, a gazillion people, great authentic Mexican food and a wonderful carnival atmosphere. It is crowned, it is loud, but it is a beautiful dose of a reminder of what Los Angeles is and where it came from. If you have not been I would recommend you take a day and go -use the subway or metro-link since you can get off at Union Station.
Ðǟれ Sǟภt工ǟG๏
Nothing like visiting a historical landmark to remember where we came from. I remember visiting this place on field trips in 4th grade and seeing "jumping bean's" never knew that existed till my field trip here. Memories 24+ year's ago.
Subas Chandran
Lovely places and palaces..people and monuments..The El Pueblo de Los Ángeles Historical Monument, is a historic district taking in the oldest section of Los Angeles. The district, cantered on the old plaza, was the city's center under Spanish, Mexican and now under United States This 44-acre park area was designated a state historic monument in 1953 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.Look for a nostalgic The Avila Adobe was built in 1818 and is the oldest surviving residence in Los Angeles .. I LOVE Olvera street! I love the atmosphere the shopping the food they people! I've been going to Olvera street since I was a kid and commuting from Orange county is worth it to hit the taquitos stand at the end of the shopping street across the Terminal Annex post office! Best taquitos ever! Especially because of the green quacamole sauce they pour on top!! Great service too! And their always friendly!
Virgie Sarabia
it was nice, just as I remember it from about 20 some years ago, not happy that i bought this, supposedly 14k gold silver plated chain for $100. for my boyfriend, the young lady brought it down from $120. as to say that this was without guaranty, when of course, we had mentioned we were from out of town, short story, the next day my boyfriend had a huge rash on his neck, tried cortisone, gold bond cream, would not go away until we seen a Dr, and gave him allergy medication.
Do not buy from this little off the side places!!
WintermuteAI
Was there for the 236th anniversary of the establishment of Los Angeles. Small street fair, live dancers, small museums nearby, and stalls with crafts and stuff. Worth spending an hour at. Beautiful architecture and decorations.
Jeff d'Hedouville
This is an incredible look back into old Los Angeles. You can take free walking tours tailored to your needs. Plus, you can buy great Mexican food.

If you feel like dancing, just do it <3
Abel Tapia
Pretty nice, didn't know it existed until an outdoor festival was taking place. Right next door is a free museum (donations) about Mexican-American culture that's worth a look!
Ella Reina
Adorable, romantic, historic street to visit. Numerous vendors and taco shops. Beautiful at night. Right across from metro station and have noticed many homeless sleep on the benches.
Eric Polk
The monument has a series of plaques around the outside that document the founding families of Los Angeles. If you are a history buff, this makes for some interesting reading.
Also be sure to head to the south side of the Plaza and see the old firehouse. The firehouse has an old wooden turntable that was used to turn around the horse-drawn fire wagon after it returned from a fire. Ask the docents on duty and they will gladly tell you about the history of the firehouse.
Tommy Vercetti
Wonderful historical monument to go and visit if you have some time to go visit some type of 90 minutes of Los Angeles I consider this one to be one of the best places to go and visit it gives you the real La experience how they consider for anyone that's on a visit or here on vacation in Los Angeles

You can't truly do a visit to old Las Angeles without checking out the many smaller museums around Olvera Street. Maps are free and they give you the history of the beginnings of California.

The salsa music and native American dancers are fun to watch. There are lots of places to eat on Olvera Street. Only issue is the unfortunate large number of homeless. Many of which are suffering from mental illness and it is heartbreaking to see.
Fawzi Babtain
I'm glad to visit this place, a nice and cool place to spend half a day in LA, and feel the Hispanic influence in the city. You can Lao shop for cheap souvenirs.
I think it's a must visit location.
Cesar Arredondo
A must-go-to historical, quaint landmark dubbed as the birthplace of Los Angeles. Plenty of colorful handicrafts booths/stores, famous Mexican restaurants and several historical building–including the oldest home in the L.A. region. It features the partially restored mural "America Tropical" by the great David Alfaro Siqueiros, an obligatory stop for art and freedom of expression lovers. In addition to celebrating the Mexican heritage of Los Angeles (the place was founded by Mexicans, many of them of African descent), the place also features Chinese and Italian landmarks, testament of the contributions of other immigrants communities to L.A.
E M
