Reviews of Old State House Museum
Michael Miller
Wow! A free museum in a really cool historic building. Great exhibits. Lovely building. A bit confusing to get around, but they have maps available. Well worth a visit. Plan on an hour to an hour and a half.
Melissa Shepard
I really enjoyed our visit here while in Little Rock. The Old State House Museum is the original state capitol building of Arkansas and the oldest standing state capitol building west of the Mississippi River! All the staff I encountered here was friendly and welcoming; I met Jimmy and he was able to tell me about the knife fight that broke out between two of the legislators. Lots to see and learn. The museum has free admission but accepts donations to preserve this beautiful building and its history.
Alfred Kuhnert
Really enjoyed the exhibits in this museum. There was plenty of info on the building and renovations of the Courthouse itself and also exhibits on Barton Coliseum, governors of AR, etc Another visit is needed to finish the 2nd floor exhibits!!
Nicki Urbanio
Love the creaky wood floors. This museum is full of history they rotate the inventory periodically so it's different everytime I visit. My favorite room is the first ladies dress room. You can feel the ghosts of the past all around you.
Jane Y
The museum was very interesting. The movie was not showing at the time we were there, but the gentleman at the desk gave us a brief discussion of the history. Then we proceeded in our own time enjoying the museum. We were particularly interested in the information about the repairs done on the building and foundation. If you enjoy music from the '60s, you will want to spend plenty of time in the display of beautiful guitars and pictures of performers. There are also gowns worn by former first ladies of Arkansas. There are many other displays that you may want to see when you visit, so be sure and allow enough time to see everything of interest to you.

What a wonderful exhibit and historical Old State House Museum. At this moment, not all areas are open but shouldn't deter tourists. Warm, welcoming greeting and much to look at. Halls echo of legislation and the care in restoration in the drawing, meeting and tea rooms are outstanding. Take a closer look Down the Rabbit Hole for sports, music and art collections rarely seen. Old State House Museum is a must stop in Little Rock.
Karen White
The building and grounds are nice but there's really not much displayed.
jim catalfamo

Andy Tanas
One of the landmark highpoints of Little Rock. Amazing restoration and detail in every room. Check out the Barton Coliseum exhibit. Can't say enough positive comments about it. Very highly recommended
Sandra Pollack
Love taking a tour of the Old State House. They have the First Ladies of Arkansas dresses in one exhibits. Beautiful. Old time furniture, grand staircase. Fun to see and learn about
Chris Reke
Very beautiful area downtown to explore especially with free admission (donations happily excepted) and 1 hour parking validation at the Double Tree's garage across from the museum. Not really a hands on top of place but lots of things to see and read about including multiple changing exhibit rooms. Don't stick your head in the cannon (ask the helpful people at the front desk why! It's a good story!)
Nathan Pierce
This place is awesome! Plus it is free to get in! The old historic state house is beautiful and has been beautifully restored and maintained. The exhibits were great and I really enjoyed the recreated rooms. This place is large and ada compliant. They also have a play place for small children. If you like history you definitely need to check this place out! The place also has a small gift shop.
Crystalize M
Informative, and interesting. They could make It a little more fun, more personality with staff would be good. I enjoyed it, especially the gowns, and hand made blankets.
HapE2Give
Free entry, but you should leave a donation in the box. Great museum housed in what used to be the old capitol building/governor's mansion. Excellent displays of the history of the building and Arkansas government. Also contains exhibits on natural history, paleontology, cultural artifacts dating to antiquity from many cultures, a big machine gun confiscated from the back of Bonnie & Clyde's car, and a kid friendly selfie booth. There are also displays of ball gowns from former Arkansas first ladies including Hillary Clinton and a room full of memorabilia from each Arkansas governor's election campaign. And, of course, there is a display dedicated to the Clinton presidential campaign. The museum also a railroad room for children and revolving exhibits of state artists/notables. When we went, there was a display of guitars from an Arkansas guitar maker. Highly recommended for a low cost (or free if you're truly strapped) outing with the kids or without. Front yard and fountain is excellent for bridal and other photos.
Bum Bum
Beautiful place. Lots to see. Worth the visit. Free admission. They do accept donations
Naeim Torkian
A must go place, lots of great information from different topics, visiting is free and the employees are very welcoming and friendly

This looks like an amazing place to visit for people into history. I wasn’t able to go on our trip to Little Rock, but other reviews make it seem like this Old State House Museum is a good museum. From outside, it looks really nice!
The Chamber Magazine
Good, modern museum with a lot of interesting facts about Arkansas history. Visiting the older buildings on the grounds was really fascinating for me, because it took me back into the early 1800's and gave me a feel for how life was then.
ROGER LAWRENCE
This is a very historic place to visit. No admission fee and lots of unique exhibits.
Tanya Henson
Homeschool day! Great info and games. History guy was really psyched.
Mauricio Cornejo
Did a quick 15min tour because they were closing (plane landed late), but found a great exhibition on Banjos and other interesting collections (see pics).
Rise Up Studios
A really cool place to check out with a nice front lawn and extensive exhibits. It's cool to see what they've done with the old capital building.
LeahValerie86
Neat free museum. Came here with my 5 year old son. He loved the train/dress up room. I enjoyed seeing the architecture of the old state house and the various exhibits.
Bella
I wasn't able to go on a tour and visit it, but if you like history it is a must GO. It's a beautiful old building.
Susan Spradlin
They have done some excellent exhibits. History laid out well.
Michele Hellstern
Night at the Museum was a really great adults only night! Truly a lot of fun, and a blast to be in the Museum at this time if the day! Give it a try!
Chris Bloomfield
Free educational museum, with limited parking nearby. There is a small theater with videos, one of which was about saving and displaying native American pottery. There wasn't a single display with pottery or anything about Native Americans. One room was completely empty. Several others were closed off. Lots of information though about the building and some about Arkansas history. The rooms about the coliseum with records and signed guitars was awesome! Gift shop closed super early for no apparent reason. Staff was decently friendly.
M L
Lots of historical memorabilia. Especially enjoyed the play it loud exhibit!
David Uitdeflesch
Enjoyed learning about the politics of Arkansas. Was horrified at how a certain political party that pretends to have the poor and minorities best interest actually used them in some terrible ways back 70 years ago or so. Come here to learn more and your view of the world will certainly be challenged as was mine.
Lai Hoh
Great place to visit to learn about the history of Little Rock, Arkansas. No entrance fee, only donations.
pale bail
Most haunted building in Arkansas. So much history to learn while exploring this beautiful historic building.
Miranda Evans
Staff was knowledgeable and welcoming. Truly amazing to see!
Berry Beandips
Got to talk to Staff about the Civil War today, it was amazing! Fun tour for kids/schools, very educational.
Marla Williams
So neat! There are a variety of exhibits with a lot of interesting things to see!
Charittee Cooks

Susan L. Britt
Was amazing !!!!! Loved it will definitely go again and again
Ricky Aynes
Great history museum.... and it’s free!
Doug Caldwell
Outstanding effort to preserve some history of Arkansas. Take the historical tour when in Little Rock, Clinton Library (see my separate review) and here. Great museum of the early days of AR and the people who made the Natural State. During our stop there was a special exhibit of the state governors.
Marc McKernan
An awesome free museum giving background on the statehouse as well as Little Rock!
Will J.
Lots of historical artifacts and pieces about the history of the State House, and those that roamed it and builded it.
Nita Colclasure
Play It Loud, was an absolutely amazing look at the history of music at Barton Coliseum.
Levi Arnold
Very cool museum. Worth a stop. If the gift shop would have been open, we would have purchased stuff.
Lacey Bishop
Great trip to be learn about our capitals history.
Lisa
Abigail in the gift shop was a joy to speak to. She was so kind and made our visit beyond excellent. We were visiting from Texas and she was so talkative and helpful with telling us other places to visit while here. She’s the best. :)
Kevroc
The grounds were beautiful and had a couple of exhibits. The museum itself was free if I'm not mistaken and we wandered through the whole place. Arkansas has spent a considerable amount of money on this building and I highly recommend that you visit if you're in this area. There is a lot to do in this immediate part of town but it only took us about 20 minutes.
David Schilleci
It is a really cool museum and it's free. They have a lot of interesting things and a lot of history. There are 15-20 different areas and it is huge. Very nice people, very informative, and it's in a great location. They stay open by way of donations. So please give!
Nicole Winters
A true Little Rock gem, free admission, GREAT exhibits and ice cold ac for those hot summer days.
Wesley Robinson
A wonderfully free museum rich with history.
Kalappaikaaran
Lovely museum with very rare artifacts and rare collection of music instruments
Fadi Al Kfouf
Love it but needs adding more stuff
vincent irwin
We had a great time learning about some awesome stuff
Tim Hamilton
The rotating and permanent exhibits are just wonderful. The current one about concerts at Barton Coliseum is fantastic. They also have a gift shop with lots of items related to Arkansas music and politics.
Kaleb Ward
Very informative and interesting! I'm not even from Arkansas and was super intrigued
lucas frick
Excellent museum, very informative displays about early Arkansas history with some musical history of Little Rock on the second floor.
Maribeth van Loon
Restored rooms, historic exhibits and a film make this a good history lovers stop. Unfortunately, we arrived too near the 4:00 closing to see everything, and the staff began turning off lights at 3:45, which felt a bit inhospitable.
Kimberly Reed
Went to see the play it loud and it was really cool.
Bette Barnes
The Old Statehouse was a very interesting place to visit. I spent about 2 hours there and was very impressed. In addition to exhibits on the history of Arkansas, there were exhibits on celebrities who were born in the state. I also enjoyed the exhibit of gowns worn by the first ladies of Arkansas. The upper floor has been restored to show how it looked when the early state legislature was located there. The setting of the Old Statehouse was beautiful. It sits on the bank of the Arkansas River. I highly recommend this stop to all visitors.
Blue Anderson
What a wonderful place to enjoy strolling around looking at items that are apart of historical events. The Museum has some old fashion flair and could use more interactive features like holograms life of old presidents or just Arkansas in general..The best part this place is free to enjoy on a nice day when you walking the Downtown area I definitely recommend this place as a hidden gem.
Rob A Baill
Nothing like free to make you want to stop by; well, they also have some really nice historical displays. They also rotate around others so you might not see the same thing twice. We got to see dinosaur fossils and a great African quilt display this trip. Which the best one was created and made by a "MAN"!
Scott Hoffman
Great historical building fantastic restoration!
Cathy Bradshaw
Christmas old English concert was amazing
Sue Tucker
We enjoyed the history of the building and the exhibits. Also really enjoyed The First Ladies of Arkansas exhibit. Our only negative comment is that the young lady that was at the front desk was less than welcoming when we arrived and then when we were leaving at 4:15 the gift shop had already closed. We asked the same young lady if she could help us and she said she really couldn't. There were 3 employees there at the time but we had no luck in being able to purchase anything. That was disappointing. Maybe could beef up their costumer skills a bit.
Paul Wallace
I visited the Old State House for the first time in years. I went especially to see the Play It Loud exhibit on Barton Coliseum.
I don't want to stay away for so long again. I had forgotten what a treasure we have here!
Meg Cullum
Staff here was so nice, we got a tour from a guide, who knew about everything. Her name was Amanda, she was awesome. The exhibits are interesting. We saw the Miss Arkansas dresses and curiosities from the U of A. They also have first ladies of Arkansas's gowns and an exhibit on Arkansas gowns.
Crystal Schmidt
This is a beautiful museum with a large variety of artifacts. It is a nice smaller size for children (and adults) to walk through without getting bored or worn out. We were at the Robinson center and could easily walk over between events.
Jordan Rogers
The Old State House is a wonderful (and free) attraction downtown. If you're looking for an exciting museum for the kids, head down the road to the Museum of Discovery. However, for history lovers this is a great museum. The exhibits are average, the real reason to come is for the building itself, it has a nice view of the Arkansas River and a stunning and classically Southern facade.
Jacob Krumwiede
It's a really incredible historic site! Be sure you make a plan to visit.
Warren Smyth
A friendly welcome, quite a large historic building, impressive from exterior, lots of rooms, only a few that represented the past, majority of rooms had cardboard displays boards describing it's history and other relevant historical facts regarding Arkansas, worth a visit, could have been better
Jennifer N
Stopped by here while making a stop in Little Rock for the night on the way home from a road trip. We stayed at the Double Tree next door (Would NOT recommend that hotel) The Old State House was super cute, it's very well kept. It's a nice stroll to take and there are some great photo ops. I would recommend stopping here if you are already in downtown Little Rock.
Irene Ramirez
Well my friend and I were there for a business meeting, we discovered the beauty and intrigue of this museum. While the staff is very helpful, parking is very challenging as the area is currently under construction for the Bridge Project. Expect to walk the distance from parking.
Tom Gatermann
I was more impressed with the architecture of the building itself than the museum displays, but I'm not going to downgrade my rating because I'm just not really into museum displays in general. The building itself is beautiful and appears to be taken well care of.
Austin Phillips
Nice history and museum. Arkansas' old Capitol building which played a part in the Civil War in AR. Nice exhibits but in my opinion some of them need an update. Interesting place to visit though. Parking is a little hard to come by.
AmberWool
A lot of the rooms on the second floor are getting new installations. A person wouldn't know if s/he could climb stairs. Since my son and I have to use the elevator, we had to have a guard escort us through some areas. I felt rushed because she was waiting on us to take her lunch.
Jon Vernon
Nice place. Just what we needed, except the dresses were about of line. Should've been in date order. So I was informed. Yes dear...
Jamie Wright
Thank you! All the outside and inside staffs welcoming greetings and powerful conversations; are just what we need these days to grow forward! A wonderful experience walking through the past to present we have come so far and still have far too go! God bless America!! <3<3
Patricia Hedrick
Permanent and changing exhibits are well displayed and always interesting. Nice gift shop. Fully accessible. Located adjacent to the River Walk/bike trail and on the trolley line.
Rubyet Evan
It's immersive and there's a bit of history and neat information to be found. However, not all too impressive for more than a short visit.
Chris Honeycutt
I liked the place, took my grand daughter and believe it or not she enjoyed it too. I love history and it was very entertaining. Its definitely worth a visit. Give it a tey
Stephen J Alexander
Good experience especially for a free museum. A good amount of history in the presentations without being overwhelming. They've done a fabulous job on restoring this gorgeous old building.
Akash Viswam
When I came here, I thought they would have a more vibrant view into Arkansas history and the rooms looking like they were in the 19th century. I felt like they turned it into a convention center. They had a lot of traveling exhibits. That was not what I came for. However, they had a faint view in a room that did not look like the 19th century and the old House and Senate chambers.
A. Hayes
Worth a trip while you're in the area. No lines or hoops to jump through. A slice of Americana when it's needed most.
Samantha Jernigan
I just love museums!
Samuel Fletcher
The staff are very helpful and mostly very knowledgeable. They answer every question you might have or think of having that they can answer. Every tour is different. Awesome place for those interested in history. They have a play room for kids too.
Jono Long
Very cool. As a presidential history nerd is was fun to stand where Bill Clinton announced his candidacy.
Terri McBride
This place has a great history tour at no cost. Must call ahead for reservations. The tour guides really know the history of this building and those whom served in it. If this review helped you, please give me a like!
Kirk Lung
Thought was the state museum.. just hx old state house. Some artifacts mainly boards with pix.. skippable unless a political fan.. could be great... wish more like PA state museum. In cool area off the trolley line.. love the trolly.. close to the water.. really nice staff..
Judith Bee (Home4edu)
Great place for a concert!
Mike Pool
Very informative curator.
A significant portion of the museum honors the women who have helped to launch Arkansas forward. A wing is dedicated to quilts as well as other rooms depicting womens contributions to society. There is currently a Greek exibit. There are artifacts from early cultures. Obviously, there are a large number of exibits relating to historical figures throughout the museum.
Ashley K.
Wonderful historical museum. The staff & tour guide were very friendly. They have a little theater where you can watch clips about local Arkansas history.
Whitney Hickerson
The Old State House Museum is the original state capitol of Arkansas and remains one of the state's most iconic structures. Enclosed within, you'll find a political history of the state, as well as numerous other exhibits covering many facets of Arkansas history. It was boring. The gift shop was boring. The building was dark. The downtown location was excellent. The outside scenery and decor was the only impressive thing.

Total hidden gem ! The Old State House is packed full of history of course about Arkansas and its govenors but has a lot of other really interesting displays. One of my favorites was the history of the Barton Coliseum and the major acts that played there. Make sure you have plenty of time because there is so much to take in as well as looking at all the beautiful architecture.
