Reviews of Honolulu Museum of Art (HoMA)
Visited this awesome museum on a Saturday, midday. Wasn’t that busy at all which is nice but also kinda disappointing because this museum is amazing! Entry fee is $20 for adults, $10 for Hawaii residents. All children 18 and under are free. Once in, the museum is expansive. So many galleries and wonderful outdoor courts. Galleries fester artwork from all around the world. Just amazing works. You can tell the folks that run and work at this museum really care about cleanliness/presentation. There is a small coffee bar and a full size restaurant. The gift shop is full of all kinds of cool things as well.
Living on the island, I can easily see myself getting a membership here because there is just so much to see and I feel like I’ll discover something new with each visit.
Wow this museum really impressed me! The little courtyards are all charming and there are so many great exhibits and wonderful artists- a mix of old and new. I had a great coffee after at their coffee bar and sat for awhile in the palm courtyard. Highly recommend spending an afternoon here!
Honestly, this museum seems like a hidden gem. Extremely surprised that there weren’t more people crowding into this place. I suppose they have occupancy limits. However, you won’t be disappointed once you step through. The beauty of the gardens and neutral space was nice. Also was surprised to see Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso, and Georgia O’Keeffe(completely surprised to see her Hawaiian prints, no clue she did them in 1939). They also have a nice cafe, restaurant, and great gift shop. Only wish I had more room to take more gifts back.
This museum is fantastic. It’s $20/adult $10/kids and active duty military, veterans and their parties are admitted for free during the summer. The grounds are well laid out and the exhibits are fantastic. So much history within these old walls. Pieces of art on display from around the world even a few BC times and one particular piece that might be one of the only surviving full size pieces of art left in the world.
I was planning on paying the $20 to enter and once I asked about military I received the discount… having said that. I would have gladly paid the $20 for the exhibit. It’s phenomenal!!
Beautiful open concept allows sunlight to bask the ~4 courtyards. $20 admission fee, must hold bag on shoulder or in front of you to avoid bumping into sculptures, museum closes early so come early as I didn't get to see everything. The paintings are stunning and you'll learn a lot about Kamehameha. My favorite paintings are attached.
I was very impressed by HOMA. Not only were the exhibits beautiful and intriguing, but every aspect of the museum including the building itself was beautiful. The place made you feel like you were transported into another place. Could spend hours here looking at the different exhibits they offer. They also offer different activities whether with family, as a couple, or on your own to enjoy what HOMA had to offer will definitely visit again!
I have been to Honolulu twice and I had a great first experience in 2019 and had to come back with my partner… a lover of art :)
It did not disappoint! We did try once to come here and it was closed. I am sure I messed up the hours but we had some difficulties finding parking. It was there but it was surrounded by homeless.. covid was definitely rough to this area as things were very changed since 2019.
So when we came back we took an Uber.
The museum has several different rooms that are well organized. We had a lot of fun interacting to friendly employees as well.
Thanks!
Also, this was included on our go-city passes… we had a blast on this trip and those passes were invaluable
I stayed at Waikiki for a week, and this is definitely a highlight of my trip. It has a mix of old and modern arts and sculpture, indoor and outdoor layout makes it a very comfortable visiting experience since you get to see the nature beauty and not getting fatigue of all the indoor arts. I frequently visit San Francisco MOMA, and I would get exhaust after seeing so much arts indoor, but not here. It is a really special modern art museum, and I think the nature help you understand the meaning of life, art better. Also a bonus point, since it is not on people's hawaii to-do list, it is not crowded at all.
I spent an afternoon here with my daughter last Friday - we could've stayed longer because there's so much to see. The few pics I have obviously don't do the museum justice.
Admission is only $20 but you can also sign up for their lowest membership tier for $50 which gives you access for one year so if you're local, you can't beat this.
There's also an outdoor/open air cafe with live music on Friday evenings. Also, a coffee bar with a super-friendly barista. I'm definitely planning to visit again while it's still an easy walk away!
Nice place to visit some local and international art. Good location, parking a bit tough, following COVID-19 protocols, family friendly, staff was helpful. Lots of walking and areas to sit and enjoy.
Beautiful place to go to learn and see Polynesian and Asian art, culture and history. The way the exhibits are set up is wonderful. There is also this cute cafe in the middle of the museum courtyard if you need to take a break
We took a tour with a friendly and knowledgeable guide focusing on religious art from around the world. Then wandered from gallery to gallery admiring the art. We were completely pleased with the experience as you will be when you visit.
Beautiful Museum!
Although a few exhibits were under construction, I thoroughly spent a lot of time here. The museum staff was very kind and chill, the coffee bar was great place to relax.
A little confusing to navigate for new guests, it is easy to miss a few exhibits, so study the map before you leave!!
Beautiful gallery! It is well laid out with amazing works from a variety of time periods and geographical locations. The gift shop was cute, but the lunch bistro was top quality-- I would go just for the bistro!
First time, around 4 pm. Be aware Parking is a nightmare, but the museum itself is amazing. Be sure to mention if you're military because the price will be only $10 instead of $20. Lots of various exhibits, something for everyone. No wait to enter.
Honolulu Museum of Art is a timeless must-visit while in Honolulu. It's walking distance from Kaka'ako and a short drive from anywhere else in town
Pre covid I was a member here for years and enjoyed their monthly classes and activity offerings. I had a chance to visit again and really enjoyed how peaceful the entire museum is.
I just adore the seamless indoor to outdoor areas throughout the museum. Endless options for courtyard benches and tables to relax, reflect , read or even journal.
My favorite area is their floating steps/pond/garden courtyard. I always tell myself I will have a beautiful serene garden-pond outdoor space like this one day.
I went to see special exhibit of a Japanese photographer Ai Iwane during Hawaii Triennial 2022. Wow, I was so impressed her photos of Bon Dance. Energy and excitement of Bon Dance were excellently expressed through her photos. I was also impressed with variety of arts displayed here at this HOMA. It was such a wonderful experience to see great collections of different cultures and artists of all ages. Especially I was very impressed with exhibition of Buddhism. I loved this museum and probably will come back.
Lots of artworks are displayed in this Japanese styled architecture. One piece of originally creative artworks is a corridor made of fragrant dried flowers . . . Amazing and very impressive!
I really recommend the Art of Hawaii gallery! There are some arts related to Hawaii, like a Hawaii volcano painting. Museum is not too big and you can easily spend 2h here.
We visited the amazing Shangri La exhibit at the private estate in Kahala. It was amazing. Its an unexpected sight to see in Hawaii. I highly recommend
You need to buy fish in a fish store and meat in a meat store. Hawaii is an important vacation and there is no need to overload it with the search for museums. Museums are about bad weather on the mainland and a reason to kill time with meaning. Take everything from the place if possible to give it to you. And leave art alone. Ships are great to come dem in the heat. It is not known whether you will become more cultured or not, but you will definitely hide from the heat of the day.
This was a great museum. I am not a big art museum kinda guy but for the price well worth it. The courtyards were fantastic. The different cultures that are represented plus the mix of old art history and the newer folks great contrast. The courtyards are calm peaceful places to
Be that add to the museums ambience. It is also one of the attractions that’s open until 9 pm thus making it a great closing attraction. If you want to do a specific attraction like the Islamic arts you have to get that in advance but the regular museum tickets can be bought at the door. There is a nice cafe, gift shop, and live music at times
I've loved this museum since I was a young girl, and it still holds up. An excellent collection that highlights Hawaii's place as a cultural crossroads for the Americas, Pacific Islands and Asia as well as sea exploration and colonialism more broadly. Visited 08/2021, during COVID, and the museum was doing a great job with safety procedures. Signs throughout requesting no more than 10 people in each gallery.
Beautiful museum. Something for everyone. Enjoyed Impressionists, Georgia O'keeffe, Roy Lichtenstein. Loved immersive art Rebecca Louise Law's Awakening. Make reservations for HoMA Cafe
A gem of a museum. Interesting collection of great art from around the world. Very interesting themed temporary exhibitions. Comes with a nice restaurant and gift shop.
I wish I have more time to be spent here, interesting collection to a wide variety of culture. I can see one piece of art by famous painter such as Monet, Matisse and Van Gogh and more.
Will come back next time. Their cafe bar has one of the cheapest coffee in expensive Waikiki!
There is a lot of interesting pieces to look at there. I love how there is art from every part of the world. I even found my country (Ivory Cost, West Africa) and I was nicely surprised. Got the tickets in advance but this activity seems to be lowkey compared to others. At least when I looked at the tickets online the day before. They weren't all booked up unlike some other activities.
The gift shop is incredibly expensive.
I love all the art on display, there was a lot of great representations from the different time periods.
The courtyard has a relaxed atmosphere. There is a coffee Cafe as well as a little restaurants. The gift shop has plenty of treasures!
Amazing museum; a perfect way to spend the afternoon. I took my two small children And they loved it.
The Asian Art Collection is extremely impressive. The staff is very kind. I plan on going back.
A beautiful experience overall and we LOVED the Floral Exhibition.
Tip:
Get tickets ahead of time. Otherwise, get tickets in person then leave for lunch or visit Iolani Palace. There are a few restaurants nearby such as YoguStory or an ice cream place called Wing Ice Cream Parlor.
If you have kids or if you're a Disney fan like me, bring them to the Polynesian exhibit because there's a Stitch (from Lilo & Stitch) in there :)
Thoughts:
Great museum! It's just the right size and comfortable to walk around. All the exhibitions surround a courthouse so you're always under shade. When we arrived, there was an hour of wait so we just got the tickets and grabbed lunch. The Polynesian exhibit and the temporary exhibits were our favorites. We saw a cafe/restaurant in the museum too so if you can sit down and grab something to eat or drink.
Formerly the Honolulu Academy of Art, HoMA, is located in central Honolulu and offers a wide range of art works from European masters to Polynesian, Asian and Southeastern Asian art. We enjoyed uniquely viewing a Monet, Picasso, Calder, and Warhol, along with art objects of Native American, Indonesian, Polynesian, Chinese, and Japanese cultures. The informal atmosphere and low number of visitors (presently) allows ample time to view exhibits casually and in peace.
The highly regarded Café is very popular and its menu includes a pasta of the day entree along with salads and sandwiches. Brunch and lunch service. Reservations recommended. Take out may be ordered and consumed on premises at the tables surrounding the main courtyard, a fun and pleasant experience.
Currently open Thursdays through Sundays with timed entry, required face coverings, and social distancing.
Entry or café reservations may be made online. Prices, including parking, are very reasonable. Not to be missed even if you are only slightly interested in art.
A wonderful experience. The guided tour was much appreciated. But wandering the galleries and courtyards on our own was also fascinating. One *must* dine at the Cafe and visit the gift shop as well.
Absolutely stunning!
I specifically enjoyed the Indian exhibition.
Great caffè with great food! Very friendly and excellent service!
It was interesting to see the various art pieces and styles from different countries. The galleries were kind of like a maze so I did get lost but, to be fair, I didn't take a nap with me. I thought it was more fun without it. The Hawaii gallery is definitely something that has to be seen of you're planning to visit here.
I cannot explain just how grand and awesome this museum is. You could spend an entire day here. We tried to immerse ourselves and really take in all the art, seeing every gallery, and it took about 4 hours in total. We also stopped in the café for coffee and the gift shop, which both were also cool. There's also a good handful of volunteers that would enthusiastically talk about the art, the history of the building and gallery, everything. Absolutely incredible, and surprisingly not so busy!
If you're a history buff this is a good place to visit. Security is a bit uptight about photos in certain areas.
A massive, beautiful museum with a diverse offering of art to see. I particularly enjoyed the contemporary art exhibit and the Impressionist works. The cafes and museum shop are also lovely. Bring a camera and give yourself a couple hours to walk around the massive galleries!
The Honolulu Museum of Art is much larger than it appears to be from the street, offering collections from all over the world. I was so happy to see the Georgia O'Keefe paintings as well as a very beautiful Monet - waterlilies of course. The courtyards are a lovely place for a date, and be prepared to take lots of beautiful pictures here. There is so much art here to take into your heart, that you must allow as much time as you can to see it all. The museum is conveniently located right on a few bus lines.
The Honolulu Museum of Art is a beautiful place to view amazing collections of art. From Hawaiian artifacts to world masters. You will love the architecture of the museum.
Also parking was free at the exit door of the museum on a Saturday, which was pretty dope!
A must see while in O’ahu
I loved the this museum. The open air courtyards are picturesque, each one inspired by a different location. There are many interesting exhibits but the tour of the Doris Duke museum of Islamic art takes the crown. Worth your time.
We travel often and usually visit art museums at our destinations. After visiting HoMA, we definitely felt this museum was perhaps the best. Down to how each area is divided up thematically and the pieces available are very representative of Hawai'i. Everyone is very helpful and the gardens are beautiful. Currently, the special exhibits currently available are really amazing and were among the highlights of our trip to Honolulu.
Thank you HoMa!
MUST SEE THE CENTURIES OLD KOREAN COLLECTION.
Without a doubt one of the best highlights of our trip.
Always visit this museum when I’m in HI. Some lovely collections and always seems to have a small but beautifully curated textile exhibit. The food in the cafe is an excellent reason to stop for lunch; it’s great! The museum store has a diverse collection of treasures to choose from, either as a souvenir or gift for loved ones. All in all a world class museum; worth a visit!
The building is a work of art in my opinion. Good restaurant. Safe parking up the street in the fenced lot next to the school. Amazing collection of jaw-dropping classical artworks too.
You need to see how many different types of art there is in this Museum. Do people create art!!!!! Through there own experiences? Is it through our tragedys? The amount of admission was 20$ Then the sky is the limit the second you see the coffee shop. I had a very tasty Mocha triple shots of course. The moment I entered the Museum of amazing culture and works of art I met the very friendly and helpful staff I've ever had the privilege to meet. No visitor will ever leave the Museum without getting all their questions answered and of course a very helpful map. I still managed to get lost on The way out. I took 32 photos of the museum 1 in every exhibit. If your in the area and want to caught up in our Unique culture differences this is a must see.
Wonderful museum! Lots to see and great collections. Wonderful Café! Delicious food! Beautiful place to hangout, read, sip some tea or coffee and enjoy the court yards. Great place don't miss it!
Fantastic art!! Really great museum, the layout is very nice and I love the open air concept of the place. The free bus to the Spaulding House wasn't running because a dump truck was in the way. Normal inconveniences of city life.
Incredible, you should go if you have the opportunity. Feel like I should elaborate about this "incredible" comment. Let me start with not only do they have incredible portraits, pictures and sculptures. Also have an excellent movie selection and offered twice out of the month free admission.
I thought there would be more original stuff. There was a neat calligraphy ink exhibit, but there were a lot of things that were stylized and not the real thing...like a digital print. I reckon it's better than nothing because I would never google these art pieces and it exposes people to these artists, but I was bummed. They do have rotating exhibits though. Their Art After Dark is fun. Lately it's gotten rowdier though.
The Honolulu Museum of Art is a beautiful place to view amazing collections of art . From Hawaiian artifacts to world masters. You will love the architecture of the museum. The gift shop is excellent!
Fantastic museum. A must see. The building is amazing. It represents the Hawaiian art and how diverse it is. The cafe restaurant serves amazing food and the service is top notch. Try to go the earliest you can cause it gets busy after 1. 👍 …
Absolutely beautiful, airy buildings and courtyards; interesting and eclectic Asian art collections; lovely tropical-themed ikebana tucked in various corners; friendly staff. Cafe is ridiculously pricey but the food is quite good. A peaceful, rejuvenating way to spend a day in Honolulu, far from the crowds. One of the nicest spots in the islands, in my view.
Great Modern and historic art, drinks and Cafe; coffee Inside. Love this place. It was free the day we went. And we are kama Aina discount as well. May have to pay small fee if you're from out of town.
I went to this amazing museum a few times a year simply to look at the many kinds of materials. Wasn't very crowded at all, which is great, but it's also a bit of a letdown considering how incredible this museum is. Adults must pay a charge of $20, while residents of Hawaii pay just $10. There is no charge for any youngster who is under the age of 18. The museum is rather large once you enter it. There are a ton of museums and several very nice outdoor courts. Artwork from all around the globe may be seen displayed in galleries. Only the most incredible masterpieces. You can tell that the people who operate and work at this museum care a lot about the museum's presentation and how clean it is. In addition to the large restaurant, there is also a cozy coffee shop. At addition, there are a wide variety of interesting items can be found in the gift store. Because there is so much to see and I always get the impression that I will learn something new whenever I come here, living on the island makes it quite likely that I will eventually sign up for a membership here.
Beautiful art work from along time ago with some great historical lessons behind them great place to go and see some beautiful pieces of art
We loved family day of this art museum. Kids can enjoy storytelling time, arts and crafts, and music!
Had a good afternoon at the gallery. Some interesting pieces of European and Asian art along with Hawaiian/Pacific artefacts. Entry fee was high $20 but a good place to visit for a peaceful afternoon after the rush of Waikiki
We loved our time here. Interesting pieces of work from all over the world and a lovely court yard in every corner of the building. They have a cafe where you can sit and have coffee while you work or study, and the environment is very serene.
What an incredible art museum. Art is so well picked over many cultures and time periods. Restaurants food was also top notch.
Beautiful collections of art from different parts of the world. My favourite has been Japanese and art from Hawaii. Nice concise descriptions of artists and the story behind individual pieces. Nicely designed building with five beautiful courtyards to sit and relax, each one of different theme. Nicely located next to thomas square where i could wait as museum had special event at the time (state visit of prince and princess of Japan). Would enjoy glass of wine if they have in cafe (reataurant has been closed for visitor).
Small but good collection overall. Surprised at how little indigenous art in the collection. Further evidence of how we, the majority suppress the indigenous population of America.
Nice museum beautiful building.
Great place for brunch, art, and contemplation. Art After Dark - held once a month - is great for socializing and people watching. Get there early. The place gets packed.
Surprising number of impressionist and rococo works. The Sunday Brunch is very good. Traditional eggs Benedict comes with a salad with walnuts. Good coffee.
Very nice smallish thematically divided art gallery. Pleasant environment with courtyards (none Pacific Island themed). Coverage of Hawaiian indigenous culture somewhat disappointing.
The museum was our first stop before our tour of the Shangri La house so we walked around some of the exhibits. A lot of great pieces, statues, carvings, pottery, and more. It doesn't take long to walk from room to room. I'm not sure you can spend more then a few hours here unless you are a die hard or specifically interested in something they have on display so check with them to see what is on display. The facility is nice, clean and well kept and worth a look for sure.
Every time I come I enjoy to spend time there whether I come by myself or with someone.
Also I look forward to exhibit there!🌷🌺🎨working hard🌴🎨🌈 …
A nice art museum with a wide variety of pieces from all over the world. The building itself is also very interesting, and they have great temporary exhibits, so it's worth going back to see the new stuff. The biggest frustration is the parking lot, the location of which is not clear and doesn't accept cash (what decade is this?!). If you're parking, the lot is immediately after McDonald's and costs $5.
I love this place! Great atmosphere, a real variety of art. The coffee bar is excellent 👌 …
A pleasant museum to visit with nice cafes in courtyards.
Several small exhibits are not overwhelming for amateurs like myself.
Better than expected.
Tip: parking lot is nearby: Honolulu Museum of Art parking lots. $5, cash only.
Well worth seeing, great artwork from the rich Hawaiian history and from around the world. Employees are very nice in helping you guide around.
Attended Kama'aina Christmas, the museums annual fundraiser.
The museum is the largest of its kind in the state, and was founded in 1922 by Anna Rice Cooke. The museum has one of the largest single collections of Asian and Pan-Pacific art in the United States, and since its official opening on April 8, 1927, its collections have grown to more than 50,000 works of art
Excellent place for Sunday brunch. Service is awesome. Food is good. Kona coffee ☕️ is watering 😛. Still will go try again. …
Great museum, it has a lots rich artifacts and paintings, must visit in person.
This place rocks. The cafe is delicious, best tomatoes I've had on the island as well as the salad greens. Fish was cooked perfectly, a must try if you're already in the museum.
Very well set up in accordance with COVID safety regulations! A beautiful place to come a little early if you really want to walk around & see ALL the art.
This place is worth the stop if you are an art lover. Learn about oceanic artwork from the past, as well as Hawaii’s modern artists showcasing their talents. Cafe is available to eat a bite, and staff is friendly. You will have to check in your bags and backpacks, but it’s free!
Beautiful exhibits which seamlessly flow from one area to another, areas to lounge, meditation court yards, friendly staff and decent parking. We toured Shangri-la during our visit as well. What a day we had.
Great museum with great guides! Can be a little busy. Has a great cafe inside which the prices are quite reasonable. Extremely recommended.
Great smaller sized museum. I love how it's part outdoors because you can actually do that in Hawaii. There's a room with a Gauguin and Monet and etc. to appreciate as well.
Marvelous time at Doris Duke Theatre for the movie Cirkus, part of Bollywood and South Asia Film Festival.
What a gem! Great rainy day activity. Diverse collection from ancient to contemporary, great museum shop. Park @ Blaisdell on King St.
I always love this little but so beautiful museum. This year first time I went for Hollowing Party. What a great idea! See the art and have fun!
This is one of my favorite museums. Just the right size. Select artifacts
Unique art and beautiful, with unique statues, and chairs and great paintings, worth your time and money
A beautiful building with beautiful courtyards. My favorite gallery was that of the local artists. Definitely worth the visit.
Starting point of the tour of the breathtaking Shangri-La Museum of Islamic Art and Culture, former home of the late Doris Duke.
Very calming place and I enjoyed viewing the Hawaiian artwork and various artworks across Asia.
A decent collection of artists from around the world with a splash of local Hawaiian culture here and there. A mixture of modern and ancient
Such a beautiful museum in Honolulu! Pretty expansive for it's location with a lot of amazing pieces in their collection. Rotating exhibits keep it fresh and I love coming here to check out what's new on display. Free entry for kama'aina on the 3rd Sunday of each month too. Highly recommend stopping in!
Super nice artifacts and paintings. Every third sunday is free thanks to Bank of Hawaii. Such a great day to take advantage of.
Art After Dark. It's gotten seriously popular!
Now that I understand more about fine art I've come to realize that Hawaii has a some of the major arts assembled here. Gaugin, Renoir, Calder, on and on and on.
One day I visited another museum on the continent and at the end of the featured exhibit I find out that it was on loan from the Honolulu Museum.
Membership is very reasonable. Join and discover. Impress your friend how mature you've become...just kidding. You'll love it.
Summary: Most beautiful minimalist modern style museum I have ever seen. Everything in here looks designer and professional curated and designed. Sections on Buddhism and Asian countries were large and epic. I was surprised by how massive this place was and wish I had allocated more time here.
Price: $20 bucks.
Time: 90-120 minutes
Parking: Limited parking on the street. Not easy.
Wonderful in every way! From staff to the exhibits to the facilities, everything was terrific! Many truly memorable works of art too. My favorite is attached...
love it. impressively great selection. The special exhibition is fantastic.
We went there a few times. Very pretty, intimate, and lots to see. They café next door has great salads. It is never crowded. A must see if you like museums and if you are in the area .
Beautiful small museum with wonderfully curated collections. Was easy to enjoy with out feeling overwhelmed.
I so enjoyed Shangri-la first and the museum after. Perfect time!!!
Love Honolulu Museum of Art (HOMA)!!!
A quaint small-medium sized art museum with a nice outdoor cafe & coffee bar. Well maintained courtyards. Nice Hawaii Triennial 2022 exhibit. As a personal bonus, it has a handful of examples from the Impressionism & post Impressionism movements...yea!
I enjoyed myself. Not a huge art enthusiast to say the least. For a Sunday afternoon, get out of house and do something different... this is for you. While most artists names will stir no recognition I was pleased to be able to see i did know of a few.
This museum was laid out well, easy to maneuver, information on each piece clearly labeled and history available for each room.
Courtyard area was beautiful, I can see why people were meeting for coffee at the small cafe on site.
Overall it was a good day, learned quite a bit and found a couple paintings that were a pleasure to be able to see upclose.
I can see myself going back one Sunday in the future.
A nice variety of historic, contemporary, regional, and local art. As might be expected, there's more focus Pacific Rim cultures, but a well organized selection of Western art.
It's large enough to hold your interest a few hours, but not overwhelmingly large. Located in a nice area just SE if central downtown.
Good museum. When we visited, more than one exhibit was closed which was unfortunate. But it showed a nice variety of Asian and European art. Would have liked to see more Hawaiian art, but I guess those exhibits were being worked on. 2 hrs to see fairly thoroughly? Maybe 3 if you read all descriptions.
Easily spend hours here, the Ho‘oulu Hawai‘i: The King Kalākaua Era exhibition is amazing and eye opening.
This museum is small but mighty. You could get through it in an afternoon (my mom and I made it through the two biggest galleries in a couple of hours although we were moving at a pretty good pace and being selective about what we spent time reading and looking at). The rotating exhibits are always interesting and touch on a variety of topics and interests.
My favorite section was a Japanese gallery of different artists who painted a variety of landscapes. The hanging scrolls were done with different techniques, color schemes, and subjects but all had a quality of reverence and awe that was conveyed to the viewer. I can't recommend it enough.
It's a cool museum and much larger than I expected. Gift shop is cute and cafe looked nice though we didn't eat. Lots of cool Asian art from most countries but a ton from China.
Such a fun place to visit & learn alot !!
Wonderful exhibits! Lots to see and a wonderful Cafe and coffee bar!
We've been to alot of museums living in San Francisco especially. We have so many grand museums here but, this museum was beautiful and very relaxing. The layout is easy to get around and is actually bigger than it seems. My favorite part was all the courtyards for reflection and getting some sun! I was so excited to see a Monet there as well! The Local artists touched us with all the realities of Hawaii in the modern day thank you for that dose of reality! We had Sunday brunch at the Cafe before walking around and the food was amazing! They even had micheladas which is something I was not expecting in Hawaii, my partner had a pog mimosa which she thoroughly enjoyed. 10/10 for a beautiful start to a Sunday!
It's a very special building with a terrific collection. We only spent 2 hours there but it could have easily doubled if we had more time. We will definitely go back the next time we're in Honolulu. The design of the building with all the courtyards, each containing its own art, was really beautiful
Quiet, small museum with a lovely outdoor area in Honolulu.
Wonderful museum and we had the best meal in Oahu at the cafe.
Loved the painting and the quietness. The shop was nice just wish they had more of a selection in cafe.
A smaller museum, but very interesting collection from various influential cultures.
A great window for the Polynesian culture. Best in door activity on the island so if it's raining you probably want to go there
Great art and lots of history within these walls. A must visit for all lovers of history and art.
A truly wonderful museum. I was delighted to see the depth of the collection. I especially enjoyed the exhibition that brought together modern art and antiquities depicting the human body. The building and courtyard are works of art as well. A beautiful way to spend several hours. Thank you!
We were staying at the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort and found out if you show your Room key you can get free admission to the museum. One day we made a trip over to the museum and took an Uber. Upon arrival we had to show our ID and vaccine card to gain entry. They also took down my husband's information for contact tracing.
Very nice museum with different collections of artwork. When walking through part of the open air area of the museum they have beautiful themed courtyards. Off these courtyards are the different galleries which you can access through the doors.
They also offer tours to ShangriLa which is a large collection of Islamic Artwork set in a beautiful estate of Doris Duke. I'm hoping the next time we visit we can take a tour here.
Great way to spend part of the afternoon. Glad we had the opportunity to see some artwork. Love to visit different art museums while traveling.
Beautiful art from Hawaii and various Asian cultures! Lovely space includes gardens
Wonderful collection of art from all over the world.
Such a wonderful museum covering a variety of art history as well as local Hawaiian history.
Beautiful museum with a good selection of art from Oceania and Asia
I really loved it. You can find Polynesian, Indonesian, Japanese, Chinese, etc art. The museum itself is like a piece of art. Truly beautiful.
I like the asian art but my favorite piece is the stitch statue.which speaks volumes which is what makes it so interesting. Also the library is impressive I've learned about artists that i didnt know about before.
We love to visit this art museum whenever we are in Oahu. Quiet oasis, always new editions, special exhibitions, great gift shop.
Modest-sized collections of art and ethnographic artifacts from around the world, with an emphasis on Asia and religious contexts. Their ongoing influence is indicated by a sprinkling of contemporary works throughout the galleries.
I really enjoyed wondering around the museum. There is so much to see! The parking close by is metered with a 2 hour max. In 2 hours I only made it about halfway through the whole museum. So if you really like to appreciate art then be prepared to go move your car after 2 hours. There is a nice gift shop and a cafe that appeared to have a nice food selection- definitely smelled good!
Simply incredible.
Be prepared to spend your entire day observing and enjoying incredible exhibits.
Recommend you spread your visits out over multiple visits to truly enjoy the museum experience.
I was pleasantly surprised with all the different collections. Thoroughly enjoyed my visit.
This is a great museum. Each time i see something that wasnt seen the time prior. A definite should see! Amazing art, artifacts and history. Very Well organized with s nice flow. The Doris Day trip is also well worth the time. The land and property are breathtaking!
Wonderful Museum with a lot of Asian countries represented. They have permanent and temporary displays. For our visit parts of the museum were decorated for the year of the tiger. Member museum of ROAM.
An incredible museum, I think it's the favorite one I have been to. Very organized, and has a lot of works! Great for Asian and Pacific Arts! I was amazed at all the cool statues and pretty complete works of art, instead of just small pot shards for instance. I think this museum is highly underrated, I highly recommend making a stop here! Cost is about $20 per person for visitors to Hawaii, but well worth the cost in my opinion!
So beautiful. Don't let th outside fool you. Th staff is amazing.
I came to this museum not expecting very much since this is not a large city but I was pleasantly surprised to discover it’s a fantastic museum. The impressionist collection has at least one work from every master that you would expect, and they were all nice pieces.
The museum also has an extensive collection of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean Art. The Islamic holdings are also very interesting.
If you have any interest in art, to make the time to stop by and I think you’ll be surprised!

Pretty nice museum. Lots of different rooms showcasing art from different parts of the world.
Toured Doris Duke's Shangri La. Must see in Honolulu. Make sure to get a reservation at least 2-3 weeks in advance.
Lovely layout and a good, varied collection of works!
Lots of great exhibits and friendly staff. Spent about 2 hours here and don't believe I even touched half the exhibits. Wide range of localities, cultures, and styles in their collection with good info.
Amazing museum - just the right size too. Emphasis on Asian art + European greats.
Lovely cafe to chill once you’re done as well.
A must visit when in Honolulu.
An amazing experience. Completely unexpected, stunning collection of classic and contemporary American, Hawai’ian, and a few other genres of art. Mostly paintings, but there are sculpture, crafts, and mixed media as well. You’ll find a very wide variety of fantastic, moving works, masterfully curated
Good choice for finding a museum in Honolulu and surrounding places to sightsee. They have lots of asian art that you don’t see in other museums. Beautiful courtyards for sitting and taking quality pictures. Amazing how the staff kept the museum safe during the pandemic and made all guests feel comfortable during the visit.
This museum has an impressive collection of art. The variety of art covers several regions all over the world - but the sections covering Asia are especially thorough. There are also temporary exhibits that are interesting. When you need refreshments, their cafe does an incredible job. This museum has always been one of my favorites.
A lot more to see than I thought!
Nice but at least a third of the galleries are currently closed to the public due to renovations. There is currently no Hawaiian art on display as far as I could tell.
Diverse and interesting collection. The facilities we're also architecturally interesting. The gift shop save some time for it's worth the wait at the end. You need around two hours or more to fully explore this amazing Museum. The staff were pleasant. This was an unexpected Treasure.
Love the free shuttle and the included admission to Spalding House.
Surprised by how big this place was! It's beautiful too. Got a little lost, but then I was back on track after looking at one of their handy maps that are placed around.
Lovely staff!
Wonderful restrooms.
Absolutely spectacular, I've been to a lot of museums around the continental U.S. The HoMA was like a "mini MET" with a huge diversity in eastern and western art. Currently, there's a Hokusai there! Go check it out if you have any interest in art what so ever.
Awesome. Not enough time to see everything. Great Asian art from 3BCE to present. Many Western artists both European and American as well.
Gorgeous and beautiful! You can spend alot of time here. Such rich culture and history to be found here. Beautiful art here that you cant and wont see anywhere else in the world.
I was completely blown away by the exhibition here. Spectacular!
I've been here a number of times and still haven't seen it all. The Art After Dark the last Friday of every month is really a great time to view the exhibits and mingle a bit. The exhibits are well put together and the building's architecture is a work of art in itself. Friendly staff will help show you around and describe the art to see here. The cafe offers hot coffee and other beverages so you can sit and relax if you would like. I will be coming back here for sure to see the rest of what they have to offer.
Great day to spend time to brush up on your art and artifacts history. To see amazing artwork from different cultures and time period throughout the history of the world. Beautiful place to come to explore history of the arts and dine on delicious food at their cafe. Wonderful for all ages.
It has many artifacts, variety of art types, much information and is very open. I found some of the art beautiful, some intricate art in which the artist's seemed to have a sense of humour, and other that was elegant. The first time in can be a bit of a maze to get through. We did not make it through the whole building in 2 hours, which was only problematic because we had to keep running out to feed the meter. We did enjoy running through at our own pace so that we could focus on each piece at our own pace. We will be back to see the rest☺
It's been a minute since I've stopped here but I've always enjoyed coming to this place. The art after dark events are so much fun but also just stopping by to see the exhibits are fun. Parking is a little difficult but worth it. Also, if you are curious about something just ask, they are always very helpful.
Very nice museum. I stopped in to eat lunch at the museum's cafe and decided to look at the exhibits afterwards. The food was good and the art is interesting. A few of the exhibits were a little underrepresented but the museum is a good place to spend the hot hours of the day.
So fun and interesting, loved exploring the cultures
I like all the staff. They're so friendly and kind! The live music was cool. You can be relax and enjoy chilling time with good coffee as well~
A real gem! So much amazing artwork! From early Roman to contemporary and all the good stuff in between!! The docents are knowledgeable and articulate - I learned so much and it just felt like a pleasant conversation. In addition to the art (Western, Asian from East to South and other cultures), the building is gorgeous with lots of little garden nooks. A coffee shop, gift shop and cafe round it all off. The perfect place to spend a rainy day.
We had a great time on a rainy day excursion to the Honolulu Museum of Art. The Hawaiian and East Asian collections were worth the trip, housed in beautifully designed buildings. The Cafe was delightful. Everything we ordered was A+. We will go again if we get an opportunity!
I love this museum with all my heart. The exhibits don't change as often as I'd like, but I still come here at least three times a year. This is my happy place, and I love to share it with my friends that are visiting. I do find it strange that there isn't a larger collection dedicated to representing the art of Hawai‘i, which is something I urge the Museum to change soon.
I love coming to this museum on the free days. It's such a beautiful museum by itself. It's always so much fun to come here with my aunt. When I came here last time, the bus to the other part of the museum kept coming too early, but we managed to take one of the buses. The other part of the museum is just as beautiful with a more breathtaking view. I recommend coming here if you want to learn more about Hawaiian culture through art!
Highly recommend visiting. The cafe was nice and affordable, galleries were great, staff were friendly and helpful, and the bathrooms were clean. Parking was easy, but I got to the museum early.
It's an amazing museum! It was quiet and the staff were so helpful!
This museum is gorgeous, with open-air courtyards and fountains, a giant outdoor wall mural, and exhibitions ranging from Japanese woodblock prints to Egyptian relics to contemporary Hawaiian-inspired art. The displays have a lot of background/educational information, which helped me to better appreciate the art. I couldn't even see everything in one three hour trip and am looking forward to going back.
The Art After Dark is one of the coolest places I've ever been to! It has lots of artworks and galleries, it is packed with people and they even have drink and food stations spread throughout the museum. But parking is a little bit tricky, it took me 30 minutes to just park my car, next time I will come here earlier to find a good spot for parking. I also applied for membership so I can visit next time without paying for an entry fee.
I was genuinely impressed by the exhibits. You wouldn't think you'd have such a diverse collection in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, but alas, you do. And the place is so much bigger than it looks like from the outside. You could easily spend a few hours here perusing the art. Stop by the cafe too for a nice bite to eat/something to nosh on.
This museum is impressive to say the least. I've been to Oahu countless times and I've never come here, but the last trip I finally did, and it was well worth it. The collections they have from different parts of the world are astounding. I was shocked to see so many pieces of art in one place.
The Asian collection alone is worth it to go and see. They also have some pretty famous paintings from some pretty famous artists that I did not expect to see there at all. This is a must visit place in Honolulu if you're here on vacation!
If you haven't been there for a while, it's a good way to spend a few hours. It's a quiet place to leisurely stroll around, exhibits inside the buildings have a/c, and shop & cafe are open.
Be prepared for a temp. check at the entrance. I believe there's still parking at the Linekona and Kinau lots ... but might be best to call ahead to confirm.
Lovely place to visit, great selection of art to view. The masks were particularly good!
Went to the Museum during our trip to Hawaii. Our hotel, Alohilani (also fantastic) provides free entry to the museum with room key. My husband and I had a great afternoon exploring the exhibits in the outdoor museum. There was a new exhibit highlighting African American artists, which was being led by one of the museum's educators, which was informative and fun. There is a yummy little cafe and a cute coffee shop in case you need a snack!
My friend and I went today and had lunch. Great food!
Then we visited the rooms surrounding the Mediterranean Courtyard. Loved the Impressionist art!!. We spent a lot of time there and will have to go back to see more... maybe a few more times!
Beautiful artwork and layout, but not at all kid-friendly. Don’t bring a water bottle or a bag, and if children are with you be prepared to be shadowed by a security guard. Rather nerve-wracking.
Lovely variety of art representation among Asia (including E, SE, & SW) and some European influenced art. I loved the mixture of outdoor and indoor spaces that is so true to Hawaii. Cafe serves delicious drinks (only had drinks this visit) at regular museum prices. The giftshop is quaint and features local artists :) Early 2021 COVID-19 practices include mask wearing, temperature checks, contact tracing info, distancing measures, and directional exhibit flow.
This is a unique museum. A little hard to negotiate around as it has multiple levels with an open courtyard in the middle and each level is split into 4 different sections. Okay for the disabled. The art works are amazing going from the very old to modern contemporary. Well worth the visit. Closed Sundays
Art After dark is always a lot of fun. It’s a pitty that it’s only till 9
On a former (Cooke) estate in the middle of urban Honolulu lies this unassuming gem. Before there were dedicated museums to Western, Eastern, or Ethnographies this was established in 1922 then open to public in 1927. As a child of a rural plantation, this was my first view of "high brow art". But after seeing multiple museums around the world, this place is notable and significant. Go there to get surprised and wistful. Reflect on how we have yearned to express ourselves and live beyond our fleeting existence.
Well worth the price of admission. A very diverse collection of art.
HOMA: has been one of my longtime favorite 20th Century public architectural spaces in Honolulu. Now that COVID is an endemic, it feels almost normal there now. HOMA membership is one of the best deals in town other than Biki Bikeshare’s monthly pass. 🤙🏻 …
Nice serene place to absorb and observe the arts. Multicultural arts displays. Everyone, local or visitor, should come to this museum several times a year to cultivate a love for the arts. Staff was very helpful and friendly. I went on a weekday morning and the place was almost empty until the afternoon. Free lockers for your belongings is very convenient. Be sure to get a map because the layout is a labyrinth and easy to go in circles. Signage could be a little better. Museum is free to public on first Wednesday of every month. Also the 3rd Sunday is Bank of Hawaii's family day and is free also. Exhibits change regularly.
They have really cool stuff here! First Wednesday of the month is free admission for everyone.
We come monthly for family day for the past 3 years and now that we have a membership we come more often. I come with my kids and my oldest enjoys learning about the new art especially when it is similar with what she is learning in intro to Art. The employees volunteers have always been very kind and helpful, the gallerys and bathrooms are always well kept. If you have kids definitely come for Family Day( the 3rd Sunday of each month) it is so much fun for kids of all ages to make and learn about art. The theater shows great films as well!
Y'all are absolute ballers! I went because I had to for a class, so I went in dancing around with Wolf Parade in. The art itself was cool, especially the 21st-century women temporary exhibit you had! As a girl and an artist, it was really interesting to see what others put out. The lavender soda from the coffee shop is phenomenal. I hear you make the syrup fresh.
One of my favorite places in the world. I love dining next to the waterfall, sipping coffee in the courtyard and contemplating the Monet on the most comfortable couch in the place. The Asian art is amazing and the design of the galleries makes you feel welcome.
The building for the Museum was built in 1928 and is the former Armed Services YMCA Building. It is a surprisingly good Art Museum that features interesting modern art with a focus on Hawaiian. There is a room set aside for kids (great idea). And it is Free! Take a wander through it. The curation and arrangement of art in the rooms lent context and surprise. There is a nice gift shop and a small cafe on the ground floor.
Super awesome place to go during the day if you want to go check out some beautiful artwork collections.
The museum can get a little wild at the “art after dark” events, but it can be a fun time if you don’t mind crowds.
I went to school here when I was a child and I was learning painting skills and I liked it nowadays I wait for the dope man who meets me near that place so I play catch with my dog in front cuz they have nice grass and you know how dope is I pretty much show up there all hours of the day and night and I pretty much get told that it's private property and I need to go and I pretty much just don't listen I finish playing with my dog the don't Man shows up I get the stuff and I'm gone. Now this story was it fabrication in a work of pure fiction any no way shape or form does this actually take place because that would be illegal. The names were changed to protect the innocent. There is no dog there is no nice grass there is no dope man there is no nothing. But did you have nice grass to play with your dog on while you're waiting for whoever.
Li Huayi's exhibition is there now. There are great scrolls that take you to the different world.
SOo lovely! All the different courtyards and peaceful setting of the gardens make it so easy to spend a day here. Keep in mind, free for everyone on the first Wednesday and third Sundays of each month! There's also a theatre that shows classics and new films, we saw Attack of the Titans and the original Japanese GodZilla! This museum is worth going to every chance u get. Staff are kind and friendly and galleries are beautiful.
Very beautiful place to learn about all Asian cultures! Definitely bring headphones because the play absolutely no music. For me it was a little awkward hearing every persons cough and whisper. No food or drink as always, but they have a cute courtyard with a cafe for rest. A must see!
Great selection of art. Especially loved the Georgia O'Keeffe Hawaii paintings. And they have one of Monet's water lily paintings which was neat to see in person. This is definitely worth a visit if you love art or is a rainy day in Honolulu.
very nice staff and great variety of art from different cultures and times.
This place was very nice. I had been there years ago for a school field trip and the exhibits are much different. It's very peaceful and there is alot to admire. It was the first time for my son to see it and he really enjoyed it.
Very beautiful. A lot bigger then you expect from looking at the front.
We really loved the open walkways between each section.
This is a nice museum with local and international art pieces. When we went, there was almost no one else there, so we could take our time enjoying the exhibits.
Although there is not a lot of European art the variety of Polynesian art makes up for it.
Very nice museum with small, but beautiful collection. Look for family Sundays - they have a bunch of activities for kids. The bad thing - the cafe closes very early, nothing to eat after 2 pm.
museum has a very wide array of art and historical artifacts from all corners of the world, including van gogh and monet. not as much local hawaiin art as I would have like to seen, but other than that it is a very good museum
The Honolulu Museum of Art consistently has interesting and provocative art shows. They have new art showcases in intervals that seem like monthly to bi-monthly, and it always seems like there is something exciting going on every time I visit.
If it's your first time they have volunteers that will give you a tour of the premises.
The last Friday (or Saturday?) of every month they have an event called "Art After Dark", it's a major event on the island. There are multiple bartender stations to keep everyone adequately hydrated, and there is typically live music, and even live art shows.
I've seen some really great art shows here at these events including live DJ's and even vocal artists singing original music.
Overall the Museum is really well organized and consistently entertaining, imo. I think all the locals and visitors appreciate the service this organization provides the public and recommend visiting at least once. If you're a local the yearly pass is $30, and a one time pass is $25.
Beautiful architecture. Nice structure and good organization of each exhibit. However the worker in the gift shop needs to be more polite and helpful. She is focusing on her phone and not enthusiastic to serve.
Quiet well-lit galleries full of wonderful art collections, eclectic art book store & great outdoor courtyards of open spaces to rest or photo oops. The ikebana florals at entrance are always magnificent. Wonderful cafe & DD theater are cherries on top !
Awesome. I don't know why I didn't get a yearly membership sooner. They've got tons of events, a cafe worth eating at, and art worth looking at... Overall, an amazing place to spend a day or so a month.
Absolutely must see!!! Best museum I have ever been to! An incredible collection from across the globe and timeline!
Awesome collection of art that's clean and well maintained. Staff was helpful and awesome when we seemed lost. And above all, a very impactful and educating experience overall. Wish I could give 6 stars.
For a small museum on a small island, it's really incredible. Lots of international art and different styles in each. It was a surprise to find some really old European and Egyptian pieces, as well as Hawaiian Georgia O'Keefe paintings. When we arrived, we were welcomed by a woman who seemed to be a volunteer. She offered my kids a scavenger hunt, and it definitely helped engage them as they looked for the images on the page.
We'll definitely go back, since in two hours we were unable to see everything. But we're considering becoming members--it's worth it! Plus, kids are free.
This is a world class museum which you should not miss! We were able to see the Matson exhibits plus all the other great adventures present. The staff were very knowledgeable and helpful. The museum store was also great--we rarely buy items at these stores but the selection was quite unique so we got out the card. We had enjoyed quite a bit of great food in the two weeks were spent in Honolulu but the museum café was the best we had during the whole trip and in a terrific setting. We will definitely be back.
This was an excellent visit. Well laid out and walking you through a gradual history of artistic periods the Museum had some amazing works, including some by Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh and the like.
There was also some more contemporary and local pieces and some from the wider pacific region.
Upon arriving I was underwhelmed by the seemingly small building and not expecting much. I was totally wrong. It was packed with lovely exhibits and beautiful courtyards plus a large shop and a cafe.
The exhibits contained your standard paintings but always had a few surprises sprinkled in which were cleverly inserted to fit the theme of the room while remaining a refreshing juxtaposition to the rest of the pieces. Often these would be pieces by a hawiian artist who had a modern take on the style or a series of sculptures in a room of portraits.
I happened to go on the first Wednesday of the month which turned out to be free for kama'aina guests. They are also free to everyone the 3rd Sunday of the month.
Since tickets are a little pricy if you're not a resident I would only attend if there's a special event going on. I happened to catch the live music and the recover interactive exhibit and it was a blast!
Nice layout and friendly staff. Good collection of O'Keefe's along with a Picasso, Matisse and a Monet. Beautiful space! Local art is impressive. I would definitely go back.
My family and I go every third Sunday for their free admission day. There are activities for the kids because they hand out a sheet to explore around all the different art galleries they have there. You have to checkout their Hawaii gallery. It will surprise the everyone even the locals.
Awesome museum, go inside
As an art student, I enjoy being in the presence of art, I was however not as interested to know about the Hawaiian Art. I thought that the Honolulu Museum of Art would have only consisted of Hawaiian Art but boy, I was so, SO wrong. I saw a range of art starting from the Egyptians (small collection) to contemporary art.
Also the Museum itself was beautiful. Their courtyards were amazing! The cafes seemed to close before 4pm. I had spent more than 2 hours in the museum and I still wanted to see more but time was up. I also wanted to go to the Spalding house, where more artworks are exhibited and you can be entered as long as you go the same day. (admission was $10) But was too late for that. The next time I go I think I would go a lot earlier.
I arrived a little late at 1:45pm and by then missed most of the tours. Most tours are at 1:30 or before that, but I got to take the themed tour at 2:30pm about the Shunga art (the Japanese erotic art). May I warn you, it was a very shocking exhibition and even the tour guide told us to feel free to leave at anytime. We lost about half our group by the end of it. It was a lot to take in and quite disturbing. She said that it was impossible to exhibit these collections in Japan. There were also local artists that were being exhibited!
Be sure to check what special exhibitions they have on the date of your visit because they have very good exhibitions. I was sad to have missed the Art Deco exhibition by a few days.
From the outside, this looks like a modest museum, but it holds an impressive permanent collection, especially when it comes to Asian and Pacific art. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions of multimedia, contemporary art. I plan to return when I'm next in Honolulu.
Went there for Mothers Day lunch. Great cafe with delicious menu filled with salads, sandwiches, entrees, deserts, and drinks. I enjoyed the special mahimahi locomoco, longboard, and breadpudding. I haven't been there since I was a little boy and like what I'm seeing today. Will come back again.
Everyone makes a reservation. It's very well organized with arrows showing the flow of traffic. It was very peaceful with many outstanding works of art!
fun to see.
recommend Fridays after 5, wine and art cant get any better
Really a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon. The collection is far more extensive than I had expected, which means I need to go back soon. Oh, and the restaurant was very impressive. Excellent food AND service!
Well-laid out. Well curated. Organized. Diverse. Interesting. And not stuffy or dusty like most museums tend to be.
We went for the flower show. It was a visual feast. We know many of the award winners and were happy to see their hard work and talent recognized an honored. We went to the last two and we look forward to going to the next one, too
Entrance fee is a bit high. I looked the open air space but it was easy to miss things unless you really follow the map.
There's a good selection of time periods. I was disappointed the exhibit of Hawaiian art was small.
I was sent here by a professor for academic research for my first visit. I arrived in a bad mood but left with a humbling sense of awe and inspiration. Art can change a person and this museum is full of priceless wonders from nearly every corner of the world. I now visit every chance I get.
Beautiful, HUGE art museum. Plan to spend a LOT of time here, because you can get lost in the exhibits. There is also a really tasty cafe as well. :)
A compact, yet complete museum housing a wonderful group of exhibits. There are also new exhibits sprinkled in regularly. The organization has increased outreach by establishing different kinds of events that appeal to a diverse patronage.
They have a nice and varied collection; just about the right size to see in a day. The docent tour was a lot of fun because of the small size, so we got to really know our tour guide, who was quite entertaining.
I arrived in a bad mood but left with a humbling sense of awe and inspiration. Art can change a person and this museum is full of priceless wonders from nearly every corner of the world. I now visit every chance I get.
Loved all the artwork such a diverse collection
I hadn't v isit the Honolulu Museum of Art in over 30 years. My recent visit was great. I loved their lunch (very busy, a reservation is needed) and a tour of Doris Duke's Shangri La (I was able to cross an item off my bucket list).
Was a nice museum, didn't look around a hole lot because the bus to Shangri-La arrived shortly after we did (our fault for not being early). I wasn't a huge fan of the gift shop, nothing really stood out but that may just be me. Hope you enjoy are!
PS. If you get the chance, definitely do the Shangri-La tour!!! Really cool experience and a chance to see art dating as far back as 1200 Persia (or something like that).
Fantastic and extensive collection! 👌 👌 One of the best stops during my visit! You will have infinite art to explore ✨ 😀 …
I come to the HMOA alone, escape the hustle and bustle of the world, quietly enjoy the artwork from the past and present. I bring the kids on themed Family Sunday to enjoy the art hunt, the music, the art workshops and demonstration. On this day we share the art with the next generation and other folks. Parking is an issue if you don't want to pay at their parking lot located next to the learning facility diagonally across from Beretania Street. I usually find street meter parking (as far as near Goodwill/McDonald's) since I don't mind the walk. Don't forget to set your meter alarm app! Time flies when you enjoying the arts.
A wonderful place to spend the day. History and culture eminate from the walls. Art from all over the world and various centuries, there's something for everyone. Top all that off with a theater, bookstore and cafe. Like I said, a wonderful place to spend the day.
This was part of our GoCard attractions. What a lovely museum, learnt a lot about the history of hawaii and saw amazing art works and sculputres from around the world. Only takes a hour or two to get around the place and check everything out. Has areas for food if you get hungry.
Such an eclectic variety of art from around the world. Easy enough to spend a whole afternoon in contemplation without running into anyone. I was fortunate to have my own private tour with the quietly enthusiastic docent Margaret. I truly enjoyed my visit and plan to return at least once more since I have yet to explore the Spalding museum.
3 bonuses: They have Georgia O'Keefe + Chihuly + Diego Rivera as part of their permanent collection.
Great place to spend a couple hours in peace and quiet, reflection, art. Nice collection of national, international, and local exhibits. Wonderful cafe to refresh and hangout. Worth the trip anytime.
The Honolulu Art Museum was really cool too walk around. The art wasn't all just one kind of art and they have a few rotating exhibition so you'll want to come back again. The only thing I can say that was just bad was finding parking was a little tricky, but that comes with it being downtown.
The art was amazing, the staff friendly and the general atmosphere was very relaxed! I particularly loved the Hawaiian art. Don't forget to take a map of the museum with you before you enter.
We went to the cafe on a break from work. You can get a pass from the museum if you are only going to eat. The atmosphere is beautifully and the food was delicious.
Very vibrant location, excellent destination for Art appreciation !
Excellent work of Art is there in the form of a scroll of a thousand Geese in various positions that may have invested more than 40-50 hours OF pleasant scrutiny; on a visit to Honolulu, during a rainy day or a Too warm day tourists can invest much time in various ways; including excellent food in the café
Love the open courtyard setting with many different art themed areas. Wonderful art and very helpful docents. The cafe here makes a great goat cheese salad.
There are many different types of art on display at this museum and a surprising selection of famous artists on display. They also have monthly art after dark events which you can access by purchasing a membership for only $30 which also grants you access to the museum regularly.
Great collection of Asian/Native Hawaiian Art.
Hi, This place has the second best food on Oahu (after Sandy's Sandwiches food cart on North Shore.) If I lived in Honolulu I would get a membership just to have lunch at the restaurant $20-$25 per person including tip. Interesting that the Asian/Indian art is almost all religious. Thanks. God bless. Aaron
Went today anticipating a 3/5. How wrong we were. What a gem! Thoughtfully creative and wonderful pieces that spread the gamut - turns out that on tuesdays there is a free shuttle to Spalding house- made it a day out to remember. Wonderful staff, knowledgeable docents who made it for usand what a view too.....5+
I've gone here all my life...it's an amazing Museum. Focus of Asian Art is excellent, but it also has a Eureapean art collection. How fortunate was I; it is a quality collection. ,
This museum has an impressive collection. I spent over 3 hours admiring everything. Highly recommended. Mahalos
Great layout of exhibits and a wide variety of great art throughout all of art history. There's something everyone would enjoy!
I love museums in general and while the Native Hawaiian art they have on regular display isn't my cup of tea, they do have a fabulous collection of Islamic art and for that reason the museum is worth a visit. Also, if you're interest in visiting Shangri La, the only way to do it is through a small group tour with the museum so take advantage of your time and do both in an afternoon. Even if you don't love the museum I'll guarantee that the tour of Shangri La will be one of the best house tours you've ever taken. Don't miss out!
Great location. The cafe is located in the center courtyard of the museum with fresh air and a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. I suggest the salmon. Also, service was amazing.
Stunningly beautiful, a relaxing break from sun and crowds. Top notch art from around the world, from the Philippines to New Mexico to India. One of my new favorite museums.
Always interesting temporary exhibitions, most with a Hawaii connection, and incredible permanent collection. I love seeing which Japanese woodblock prints from their huge collection are on display each particular visit.
i enjoyed the gift shop, the co-owner/clerk was delightful and helpful. auwe
he said the shop plans to close and move to ford island. wonderful and unique choices. bought a fabulous umbrella, and a cute bracelet.
Visited the museum in conjunction with a tour to Shangri La. What a great day and a nice way to get a break from the beaches... If you need one! Nicely set up large courtyards and open areas that connect with different galleries show casing lots of Polynesian art. The cafe made my friend a lavender late and their barristas actually make the lavender syrup! Also a beautiful gift shop to visit with unique items. Free parking half of block away for museum visitors. Free parking in Honolulu is next to impossible to find.
Along with Hawaiian art, it has a Van Gogh, Rivera, Okeeffe, Monet just to say a few. Very comprehensive collection from around the globe
Excellent museum. The eastern Asian art is fabulous. There are a couple of cafes were you can get a snack and a coffee/drink.
Excellent woodworking show this month.
The Islamic or middle eastern influences were quite a great addition to the entire experience.
Not busy, has parking around it but you’ll have to circle around the place for a bit.
Fantastic place to come spend a day to half of day and just read and take in the art from different time periods. Go Oahu pass is definitely recommended.
Art after dark. Was more like a night club but hey I ain't complaining... Nice art, and everyone dressed to impress. Art everywhere! Also found a Monet which was unexpectedly awesome ...
It was the most spectacular of my whole year of being on this Island . Up until then I thought I'd seen everything!
Confirmed. This is a bank with a few pieces of art strewn about. I give it 3 stars because I was able to use the atm quickly. Some of the most crisp dollar bills I have ever recieved. Nice place to walk to if you have to wait for your tour at the Iolani Palace.
Very nice, compact museum with a collection that could use a bit more focus. Super outdoor cafe in the courtyard - one of the better lunch places in Honolulu.
We had a wonderful time at the museum. The Sunday crafts are lots and lots of fun for the kids. So glad we went today. :)
AWSOME place to learn about history from all of the world, this is my second trip there, and I'm planning two more , because there is lots to see, and I don't want to rush and miss a thing ! I truly love this place and it's awsome staff was incredible! !!! Got to go and experience the aesome pictures, paintings, and artifacts, don't miss out !!!!
We had Sunday brunch in the Cafe which was delightful. We also toured the Hawaiian gallery which is amazing!
Well curated, great building, enjoy lunch or coffee in courtyard.
Great place to spend a Sunday afternoon with the family enjoying the beautiful art that is on display. COVID procedures are in place to keep all patrons safe and spaced out.
Expansive. Curated collection from all over Asia and throughout time. Took 3 to 4 hours casually striking through. Have lunch t the Cafe: burger and hot dog surprisingly good, around $10.
Small but well kept museum with a good selection of pieces and excellent scenography. Great for kids. Provides a good overview before the Bishop Museum!
Pretty cool place to learn about the arts and culture of hawaii
I have loving memories of going to many their exhibits growing up at the Honolulu Museum of Arts. They especially have amazing & relivent content/activities to interest kids!
A nice experience that was a nice little surprise as I wasn't expecting to go to a museum. Really enjoyed seeing some of the masters and Georgia O'keefe.
This place is amazing! It has a lot of art works from all over the world. There weren't many people here so I could take time to actually look at pieces.
Really nice and quaint museum. The art and displays are set up wonderfully. The staff were friendly and kind. Would definitely recommend.
this was a family free fun day out and was bith amazing for the kids and myself.
i was ecstatic to see the art work i had admired my entire life and the children learnt the appreciation of Art and arts and craft. Thank you
well worth the trip
It's an experience you can't leave out if you love to see up and coming art work. Enjoyable to study and reminis while gazing into the minds of others.
Small shopfront located next to a residential apartment. Easy to miss
Great tasting and cheap poke bowls. You can get two flavours in one bowl. The seafood is either ahi (tuna) or tako (octopus). Seasonings include the regular shoyu (soy sauce), spicy (which is a slightly spicy mayo base) and miso (fermented Japanese soya bean).
I had the shoyu ahi and miso tako. Very tasty and fresh.
Restaurant is excellent, and open to public even if you're not visiting the museum. Special exhibit on African-American artists.
HMA offers permanent displays of Hawaiian art and culture, as well as rotating displays from local artists, as well as pop culture and historical displays of Asia Pacific areas. There are several nicely decorated courtyards, a standard gift shop, and a restaurant. The HMA also offers a number of community activities, such as Art After Dark, film festivals at the Doris Duke theater, and Bank of Hawaii sponsored family days. If you live on island, I recommended getting a membership.
Enjoyed the cafe and the peach bellini. Quiet, beautiful and relaxing place to wander and see the history
Excellent museum as stand alone visit, we combined with trip to Shangri La that made experience even better. On site Cafe serves delicious food too.
so beautiful
So calming and pretty. Great collections and great coffee. The staff here are very kind and helpful.
We went on the free sunday. Lots of children running around doing activites so it wasn't as peaceful. Nice museum esecially the Japanese wood blocks.
lovely staff, nice place to start the Shangri la tour, but the musuem itself seems disjointed and hard to navigate. Might return on a cooler day.
The Honolulu Marathon was in progress at 630 am, roadways were cordoned off, was waiting for roads to open adjacent to museum.
Bollywood film festival is bonkers great. Despite being relatively unknown, this is a world class museum. A hidden gem, especially for Asian art.
Small, but quite broad and informative collections. A delight in the middle of the pacific. Highly recommend.
This is a quaint but wonderful museum. All of the pieces are beautiful. The museum's architecture is quite calming, with how how everything flows.
Beautiful. Worth the trip, don't miss out. Calming if you need it, inspiring if that's your desire too. Has it all, even restrooms (on Oahu?? Whaaaa??!?)
Fantastic art collection and the curated exhibits are always worth a second, third, forth visit to the museum.
Free admission for HI residents on Fridays, 4-9pm. Awesome! Perfect date night.
The Honolulu Museum of Art is considered a small museum, but I was surprised by how deep it’s collection is. Definitely one of the best things to do in Honolulu.
Beautiful Museum filled with rich history and splendor. I would suggest stopping by a few times. Especially with their revolving contemporary sets.
Went to this museum for their Art After Dark and loved the ambiance! One of my new go to event!! The buddha section is one of my favorite section.
Convenient, well maintained, easy to get to. Very up close & personal museum atmosphere, more itimate than other museums i've been in.
Local artists featured and the Art After Dark on the last Saturday of the month is the best party in town featuring live performances & DJs. Join the museum for $25 and you can attend all the AADs for free!
I often come here to watch films at the Doris Duke, admission is free for students like me. I take advantage of the free days to go to the museum and usually that's also when most people are there as well.
A very impressive and unique collection. I especially enjoyed the Shangri La tour and the Hawaiian art deco special exhibit. Well worth a visit.
Great collection in a beautiful setting. Doris Duke. theater shows an array of great films foreign, art house, retrospectives,
This is my favorite museum on Oahu.
Came for the art after dark, it's fun, but the prices are a bit much, I don't mind paying the price for a year membership, but the drinks are too much
The Museum was really great and so much interesting things to discover. It is definitely worth spending a few hours here.
I always bring my kids for the Kamaiana Family Day the 3rd Sunday of the month. They have tons of activities and different themes and of course there is all the ART!
Nice museum. Not to big but not exactly small either. Had done nice pieces.
A nice quiet place for viewing some worldly artifacts. I thought the price was a little high for visitors but the do offer a military and locals discount.
Wonderful
I enjoy myself every time I visit and the annual membership is definitely worth it. The restaurant also has a great menu and service is great.
Third Sunday of each month is Family Sunday, free admission!
Great museum, didn't give myself enough time, will go again next visit.
Beautiful museum. Love the collection and the architecture. Cafe has yummy food. Parking is metered street parking.
Outstanding collection of Asian and Western art. Well worth a long after noon. Great architecture, space, sense of place.
Beautiful art, a good visit.
Found exhibits labels parochial (rated G). We were left feeling we needed to make up our own story for missing info.
A wonderful collection of art from centuries a long time ago. It is amazing to see the detailed artist have taken in their art.
A really good teaching museum with art from all over Asia, ancient to modern, and one of each of many old masters. Worth the time and cost
real good place of different artworks, I like it :)...
i am surrealism art worker :)...so many art museum in Europe so that's good here in HI
I was just sitting on the grass nearby and they told me it was private property and I couldn't be there, you shouldnt waste so much space and not let people be there
Awesome museum. All cultures of Hawaii are represented with amazing collection. Sunday is free
Nice enough museum with a small'ish collection of modern masters. Does a good job of showcasing regional art with more traditional works.
Boys Boys Boys, don't rush her through, let her stay til closing, BUT, and it was a big one,
If she's pulling to the exit....Go boy, Go!.
The clueless men, who could not read their woman.
Why hadn't I done this sooner??? Really interesting tour...our docent, Debbie, was so passionate & knowledgeable - she surely made the tour even better!
Great place to spend a rainy day. It more like a world heritage museum than one dedicated to hawaiian and polynasian culture.
Lots of great art, especially the Asian area. Samurai swords, jade figurines, and potion bottles. Very cool.
Beautiful Museum, helpful staff member. I look forward to seeing more art when I visit again. Mahalo
It's a fantastic Museum and holds extra special special events it's well worth it to watch what this museum is offering us because it's always a treat
Excellent experience. Reasonable prices. We spent about an hour here. Customer service was very good.
They have art here
Art after dark art nights are fantastic and enable me an excuse to go downtown.
Great exhibits and rarely to edgy or forward.
Excellent selection of pieces, beautifully displayed, fabulous special exhibit, delicious lunch in a lovely setting.
A wonderful museum -especially if you enjoy Asian art. The staff were very helpful.
There's a little bit of everything for everyone - Hawaiian art, Asian art, Impressionists, contemporary art, gardens and more!
Fantastic! Well worth multiple visits. Hard to see everything in one day. Even harder to appreciate it all in a single day.
Exceptional exhibition and permanent art collection ... found staff members very helpful and gift shopping a joy ... hahaha
Disappointed that James Michener Japanese woodblockprint collection and catalog unavailable maybe next time
Lovely gift shop and wonderful staff and cafe. Had a delicious lunch. Beautiful art.
Amazing exhibits, beautiful grounds and Art After Dark every last Friday of the month is a blast!
Excellent layout and intriguing variety. Ancient items as well as modern and contemporary. Overall great experience. GO!
Beautiful with an excellent presentation of the art masterpiece. Nice and interesting bookshop. Very good restaurant with excellent service.
Wide range of art in beautiful setting with interesting special exhibits. Not too expensive at 10$.
Really nice exhibits. I mean I love museums and this was no exception.
It might look small on the outside. But it is gargantuan on the inside. A treasure house of magic and art

Excellent displays. There is a book club and seminar room. Lecture was good.
Very nice, and very clean facilities. Went to "chickenskin" ghost stories here with my mother and uncle. Fantastic!
Friendly staff and extensive collection! A lot of beautiful pieces to view, with informative plaques.
It's bigger than you think! The courtyards are lovely and the exhibits are very informative
What a diamond nestled in an older part of Honolulu. Across from HPD.
Originals by masters. Much Asian and ancient global Native artwork.
Wonderful museum all around. Look forward to coming back, one day was not enough!
Great museum and location, busier than I expected. Wonderful exhibits right now
Gorgeous site. Large variety of artwork and lovely grounds. Also, special opportunity to visit Shangri La!
Always well curated and worth a visit. Beautiful building and a very serene inner courtyard
Impressive variety and works of art from different epochs and culture. A beautiful gem right in our little island of Oahu.
I liked this museum, good mix of art in a really nice, but the architecture is what I remember most
Lovely museum. Always something wonderful and familiar, always something new and remarkable.
This art museum was the best one I ever went to. I loved the art their and learning about hip hop cause I love to rap
A very nice museum with a broad cultural story across the Pacific and from around the world.
beautiful place, a lot of great works
Great experience! Definitely recommended though it is a bit small.
Great place, haven't seen too much but there is lots to explore and has a great collection.
Lots of photo opportunities....but no safe wheelchair access to the 2nd floor.
I love this place. I don’t even like going to art galleries. I feel like this is for a younger crowd.
Love the beautiful exhibits, and especially the family activities on Bank of Hawaii Sundays.
Some pretty neat statues outside. A diverse selection without having too much of any one section of the world.
Pretty good mix of art. A little on the pricey side for such a small museum though.
Had a great time will t
return when I have visitors they will like many point's of interest
I did.
Only been during art after dark. Cool exhibits and shows. Get the year membership.
Truly unique museum with themed courtyards and calm demeanor. Very special.
This place is awesome! Outstanding collection, beautiful building. Even a tasty cafe.
It was very nice. There were available guided tours and self guided. It took only 30 minutes.
Amazing art exhibits. Art after dark on the fourth Friday of every month is great too!
Very good quality museum in the heart of Honolulu. Parking is makai and Coko Head in the Academy lot.
Well worth a visit.
Very nice. Great cafe too!
Lovely setting in which to spend a leisurely afternoon with old friends! Escape the heat, learn stuff, talk. Heaven!
What a delightful experience it was to visit this beautifully designed art museum, with a surprisingly diverse collection.
Family friendly museum, with awesome art and a very responsive staff... Honolulu Museum of Art for the WIN!
Please take guided tour and must have 2 hours to discover all of it. Very high end arts to see.
Great collection on a really impressive location, a must do in Hawaii.
Nice museum!
Lovely lunch. Seared ahi salad delicious. Eggplant not so much.
There was variety and some depth to the displays. Loved the Hawaiian art!
Great exhibit worth every penny. Impressive for a smaller museum
