Had a wonderful time this museum. A historical gem that has a alot to offer. The African American history displayed is remarkable and the museums does a good job depicting a snap shot back in time. The staff is down to earth and very welcoming.

Great museum. Highly recommend. Very interesting part of Des Moines history.
Our guide was terrific.

It's a neat little attraction but nothing special and could certainly be done better. It's also right next to the Fort Des Moines Correctional Facility so you get the added bonus of losing your search and seizure rights despite not being a criminal, and the area is crawling with prison parolees. That might not be so bad, but they also have a sizeable sex offender unit there and since it's a work release center they're out in public just like everyone else. Anyway, not a stellar experience to say the least.

Hallowed grounds for Black History and Women's History. It inspires me to think of Iowa at its best. Fort Des Moines Museum displays how Iowa socially and racially raised the standards of Equality and Equity and challenged the United States to follow suit! As a Black Man, this place makes me proud to be an Iowan.

It was very interesting, I did not get the name of the man who showed us around, he was very nice and informative.

Excellent information about a historically significant site in the USA.

Interesting pieces of history with a guide - only available by appointment. The only training base for black officers in WW1 and the only women's WAAC/WAC base in WW2.

I encourage everyone to go see the history of this place. They have fallen on economic hardship so it is not always open to the public and they do not have a/c currently running but this is a great place to visit if you get the opportunity

This is a diamond in the rough. It is a privilege and an honor to have this facility in Des Moines. That it’s free and survives on donations is amazing.

Great place to learn about the African American Officer Training and the birthplace of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC).
