I had been to the museum back when it was in the artists house on Pearl in Denver, and loved it then. This is an impressive museum with a very interesting and fun collection of early to mid 20th century paintings, furniture and decorative art. I love the way the artwork is displayed with the many unusual and period piece chairs. Couches, phones, cabinets and other interesting furniture and art objects as well. Don’t miss the Warhol Campbells Soup dress! Just a fun museum that is worth a visit. I love Kirkland’s work too.

Had this museum on my list to visit while in Denver and also met several people who highly recommended it. It was a pretty neat museum but a bit overwhelming as it’s quite crowded with things…almost like an antique shop. They had a Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit when I visited, and I believe they rotate out exhibits in that space. The other rooms are always there and contain pieces that are grouped by time period. There’s street parking all around which is free on Sundays.

I love this place. The building itself is beautiful up close. The staff is friendly, the gift shop is great, and the collection is massive! If you want to see everything then expect to be there for 4 hours or more, it's worth it!

This place is a cultural treasure not just for Denver and Colorado, but for the country. It is an amazing collection of arts and crafts from the last 150 years, going beyond the history of what the namesake Vance Kirkland created. The displays are an amazing mix of paintings on the wall and furniture with sculptures and everyday items. I especially like the art deco and art nouveau houseware items. We last visited before they moved to the new location (partly because they don't allow children under 13). Glad we checked out the new, bigger location. Fun to see, too, how they incorporated the old studio building into the new venue after moving it from several miles away.

This is a fabulous small museum with lots of art from the Kirkland collection. The Kirkland has everything from Andy Warhol pieces to Frank Lloyd Wright chairs. A must see museum in Denver

The art pieces there are unique and interesting. The museum isn't small, but also not too big that you get tired. I was a bit bothered by the employee following us around the whole time. They tried to make it seem that they weren't, but it was very clear. Not sure if they stuck around for questions or so we don't damage the art.

Nice small place for a family reunion to father, places to sit, meet and talk. Wonderful staff. History of Vance Kirkland and period rooms. They provide carryable seats to sit on as well as lots of benches!

Best place to view works by Colorado artists, bar none. Rooms are excellently curated with both wall art and design pieces including furniture and ceramics. Also the perfect size- big enough to keep you occupied for 2-3 hours, small enough to see everything without feeling overwhelmed. If you only see 1 museum in Denver make it this one. It's so uniquely Denver.

Delightful museum packed full of mostly art nouveau and art deco household items and decorative art. Room after room of whimsical and extremely tasteful objects along with paintings by Kirkland and others. A joy to visit. Update 10/22/22: Still great! The Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit is sparse on objects but very informative and well designed to make the most of what they have.

Turns out I'm a huge fan of Vance Kirkland's art! Loved the "salon style" displays that mix paintings, furniture, and sculptures together making it feel like you are wandering through someone's very eclectic, very cool home. The nerd in me also loved all the old typewriters, radios, and TVs throughout the museum.

Definitely the best art museum I've been to in Denver. This place is packed to the brim with beautiful pieces. I loved both Kirklands work and many other Colorado artists. They also had pieces by Warhol, Frank Gehry and Andrew Lloyd Wright. Note they don't allow children under a certain age in here because there are so many fragile pieces. I spent close to two hours there with no problem and will definitely be going back.

If you’re a lover of fine arts and design, this is a MUST see. Absolutely stunning collection filled with the most beautiful artifacts collected from all over the world. Immaculately maintained and displayed. From stills to prints, sculptures small and large, it is the single best collection of unique and forward thinking art and design anywhere in the world. Went during Denver arts week which happens during the first Saturday of November where multiple art museums graciously open up their doors for free between 5-10pm. Museum admission is not expensive on most other days and it’s a fantastic way to spend some time and taking in the breathtaking modern art pieces with many that transcend time and still can be considered pieces that should not be missed hundreds of years later.

I really enjoyed visiting the Kirkland Museum! I made of day of visiting multiple art museums in Denver. The Kirkland Museum was my last stop after visiting The Denver Art Museum and Clifford Still Museum. I had never been before and didn't know what to expect. I was blown away! The museum is small yet dense with art. Kirkland's pieces truly must be enjoyed in person to fully capture the beauty of each piece. I loved the museum so much I ended up buying a museum membership. Thank you, Kirkland Musuem, for a great visit. I can't wait to be back! PS: Special shout-out to the amazing staff. Everyone was very nice and demonstrated their knowledge of the subject matter. The volunteer staff member Tamera was particularly helpful and pleasant to deal with. You guys rock!

My hubby and I are art lovers. We decided to visit this museum to get some inspiration. We were pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the paintings and the enthusiasm of the staff. We are waiting for a new exhibition in February. Would highly recommend visiting this awesome museum!

Today I went to the Kirkland Museum for the first time. I greatly liked the "salon style" of presentation; each gallery exhibited paintings and sculptures with complementary furniture, vases, and other objects. These decorative aspects did not distract from the artwork, but enhanced the experience. I felt more present to the cultural moment underlying each artistic movement or period, from the Arts and Crafts designs of the late 1800's to the postmodern era. I did not know much about Vance Kirkland before today, but I found his life story compelling... and admirable. The installation of his original studio at the end of the central promenade was a fitting touch. The immersive feeling of the galleries was heightened even more by entering Kirkland's actual studio and seeing his books, records, and tools. The staff was very friendly. I took the thirty minute introductory tour, which I strongly recommend. The museum collection is rich, dense even - and a bit of guidance as you begin your visit will be helpful. During my visit, there were three guides (or docents?) strolling through the galleries to answer any questions. They were quite knowledgeable, and their enthusiasm for the museum was infectious. I enjoyed the museum's broad and over-arching plan, with galleries following the artistic movements of the last century. But I also appreciated the emphasis on Colorado art. It is not provincial or parochial for us to be proud of the work that has been done in our state; rather, it is important to remember that Colorado has always attracted spiritual and artistic adventurers who deserve our attention. The Kirkland Museum makes a strong argument for this perspective. Along somewhat similar lines, the museum clearly strives to include women artists and designers in each exhibit. There are many exemplary works by women that might have been left out by more narrow-minded museums or art historians. This is commendable, and the pieces are impressive. There are many interesting and attractive features to be found in the Kirkland Museum, but the most significant are Kirkland's own works. His artistic journey reflects the trends of the 20th century. I think I would have trouble naming which period or even which piece of art I found most compelling. His early realistic watercolors are there, so are his later surreal and abstract works, big and small. His last painting is there, too. Titled "Forces of Energy from a Sun in the Open Star Cluster K 1," it is both powerful and poignant. There is power in the bold colors and imaginative sweep... and poignancy, as this is his last completed work. Seeing this painting would be worth the (entirely reasonable) price of admission alone. Fortunately, it is only one piece of the wonderful collection on display in this superb museum.

I was in Denver on a Final Friday and this was on the art Walk list. The listing seemed like a museum dedicated to Vince Kirkland, but its actually a portion of a massive collection of many modern artists with connection to Denver like Andy Worhol. Imagine the finest estate sale of a modern art collector. It would be nice to have a docent tour of all these distinctive pieces or better yet a virtual reality tour. There's a lot of interesting stories to be told here.

Visiting the Kirkland museum is similar to visiting a cool antique shop. I really enjoyed the emphasis on local (Colorado) artists. Additionally they had works of architects whom have designed buildings in Denver (Frank Gehry, Michael Graves). They legit picked up Vance Kirkland's studio and moved it half a mile. I like seeing the environment that the artist worked in. The paintings were great and they have people who worked with the various artists on staff to answer your questions. A lot of effort goes into this little museum. I recommend a visit, as it's not your typical tour!

A very interesting museum in the 'salon' style (galleries are like rooms in a house in with paintings, furniture, sculpture all in one room). I especially liked the inclusion of Vance's studio so I could see how a professional artist works.

I highly recommend this place if you're looking for something to do. It's a small museum but there's so much to see, I spent way more time roaming around than I anticipated. Kirkland's art is the real highlight. I work in the space industry and I had never seen the cosmos illustrated in such a beautiful way. Kirkland's final finished piece "Forces of Energy from a Star in the Open Star Cluster K1" from 1981 is eerily similar to a photo of the Cosmic Reef taken by Hubble in 2020 to celebrate its 30th year of operation. I've attached a little comparison I made between the two. Really awesome stuff. I'll be getting prints!

If you like nice furniture, paintings, and glassware, this is the museum for you. An entire section at the end that highlights and displays a good chunk of Kirkland's paintings, organized by date to show how his style changed throughout his career. Well worth a visit!

I have never visited this museum before, and I'm glad I did. It was a very impressive Colorado local artist collection, phenomenal dot paintings and glass work, with some neat metal pieces as well. If you haven't seen this museum before I recommend killing an hour here!

When I was planning my visit I saw this museum and it was top on my list. Kirkland did not disappoint. First, the building is beautiful, and the staff was incredibly friendly. The museum packs a lot of amazing design history inside and does a great job of it. Unsurprisingly, the layout is well thought out. The rooms along the promenade walk you through the history and evolution of design better than any history class or any other museum I have seen. The museum is set up more like a furniture store or the home of a collector than a white-walled modern art museum. Each room offers a holistic glimpse into that era of design. The items are presented in a way you rarely see at other museums, in a more natural and contextual space. The studio space feels like it is still someones home. It does not feel like much was changed to make it a museum. The smaller space and more natural layout makes for a unique experience. A fantastic museum filled with a great history.

This extraordinary museum has been one of my worldwide favorites since it first opened in 2003. The new building, which opened March 20, 2018, is beautifully designed and provides more intelligent space for the collections. The original studio building is seamlessly integrated. This is a rare opportunity to see both Kirkland's own work plus Colorado and regional art in context with all types of decorative arts from furniture to tableware. There is a nice Visitor Lounge and a beautiful Museum Store. Visiting this museum is a memorable experience.

What a delightful little gem of a museum! I can't believe I haven't visited before now. The museum is small, but they pack a lot of interesting content into the beautiful building. The variety of art spans from paintings, to ceramics, to furniture, and everything in between. It is a modern art lovers dream. The Bauhaus and Art Deco collections are great, and they have several Frank Lloyd Wright pieces. They also have numerous pieces by local Colorado and western artists and of course numerous paintings by the museum's namesake. Pay a visit and you will not be disappointed!

This is a fascinating museum and a must visit for anyone visiting the Denver area. We loved the presentation of decorative art, including furniture, place settings, paintings, sculpture work and a great period by period explanation of Kirkland's art and studio. There is a small gift store with many eclectic items, perfect for the art lover. Staff have taken extra care to open the museum safely during this crazy covid era.

We had a couple of hours to kill, so we spontaneously popped in for a visit, and I'm very glad we did! It was unlike any art museum I've previously visited in the way things are grouped together for display. My husband, who normally doesn't enjoy art museums very much, loved it and was fascinated with so much of what he saw. It was a good n experience to go through the museum with friends. The gift shop is great too. The building looks small, but there's a lot packed in there.

Wide variety of art, furniture, sculpture, dishware, etc. Some people may not like that it is so mixed and close together, but I found that, because of that, there were things in every room that appealed to me. Very nice gift shop as well. (Please note, no one under 13 I'd allowed admission in the Kirkland due to the open nature of the displays and breakable objects. It is certainly understandable, but I'm a teacher, so it made me a little sad.)

Really enjoyed my time here. Was well worth the visit. Learned a lot about Kirkland. Only complaint would have to be that there was maybe too much on display in some of the rooms. I felt a bit overwhelmed and wasn't able to focus my attention on individual pieces on more than one occasion, due to the sheer amount of various and amazing things here. I did, however, find my new favorite painting, which I hope will not be a problem to post in my review here. There's a lot for everyone here, from surrealism to ceramics. And chairs. Lots of intensely designed chairs.

This exquisitely curated small museum is a gem. It accurately and creatively represents the American and European aesthetic of Kirkland's world. His own works are presented for maximum impact and understanding and show his profound periodic evolution as an artist and human being. The docents are great . The new building is a wonderful piece of architecture. This is a don't miss experience for fans of modern art with a biographical twist. Its easy to tour it in 1 to 2 hours.

I love this museum! They've achieved the amazing feat of surprising you with things you've never seen before, even if you had been in that room just a few minutes ago. There are delightful objects and art everywhere. When you go, plan on wandering without too much direction, and go back through rooms you've already passed through. I guarantee you'll see things you missed the first time. Also, they frequently rotate the collection, so it's worth visiting multiple times. I try to bring out of town guests here every chance I get, and I grow fonder of the museum with every visit.

Quiet, and one of the most unique museums out there! With a focus on furniture, art, and ceramic decorations dating primarily from the 1910s to the early 2000s, you'll find yourself ooing and awing at every angle, even up high! We will absolutely visit again; we loved it!

The Kirkland Museum is a wonderful gallery full of amazing art of all different types, styles, shapes and configurations. Many of the art pieces were of furniture and there even was a bathroom complete with toilet, sink, and a rack of clothing that was roped off and displayed as art. The main attraction was of the dot style paintings where the artist dipped a paintbrush into paint and instead of paint strokes, dotted the entire canvas with little dots of paint. Very interesting, unique and explosive in design. Truly a must see gallery.

A lot of great art to look at, a fair amount of it is furniture by architects. The museum's new home doesn't have the same character as it's old place, but it is definitely larger and more is on exhibit. The art is grouped nicely into different rooms with good notes about what is in each room.

Always an interesting collection of house-ware items, furniture, and artwork from different designers, artists, and architects from the last century or so. Since moving to this new location there is plenty of room to spend as much or little time as you’d like wandering from room to room. Should you have any questions, the volunteers are knowledgeable and approachable, and you can tell they enjoy the museum just as much as the patrons. Affordable for a day visit but if you plan on coming more than once in a year, sign up to be a yearly member- you will never get bored of coming here and will see new things each time

If you like decorative arts, industrial design, or want to see a survey of stunning work by Colorado artists this is the place to go. In fact, every painting hanging up was done by a Coloradan! The collections here are broad in scope, but tightly refined to showcase beautiful work in many genres. If you love art or art history, the Kirkland museum is a wonderful place to learn and be inspired.

The new facility is absolutely beautiful! So much more spacious; there is no longer the need to weave among items with the sense that you might actually trip over them. It seems like there is so much more on display, but you can focus on one gallery at a time to make it more manageable. There is something wonderful everywhere you turn, and when you turn there again you'll see something else wonderful you missed the first time. Spend an afternoon or several or one a month. It's a fantastic journey.

Such an amazing timeline of Vance Kirklands work. He moved through the styles as they hit the art world. They also moved his whole studio building over to this museum super impressive. Massive collection of glassware, tables, chairs, and other artful furnishing from 1900 till now. Amazing and overestimating collection.

I love this place! The 1st time was at the old address & I loved it! They needed to move for more space to exhibit their large collection and other traveling exhibits. ASK them HOW they moved, seriously! If you are a creative person (or want/wish to be), this is a really cool, rad, groovy, & awesome place to visit.. Did I cover everyone with that? But really, this place sparks soooo many ideas in me! I never thought much about design, form/function, or materials before visiting the 1st time. (Except for "Project Runway").They showcase different art & design periods and you can see how the former periods affected later ones & how some of the newer periods wanted to wipe the slate clean & be totally different. Also the affect of immigration, and artists/designers "summering" in Colorado. The many paintings, furniture, tableware, vases, clothes, rugs and almost anything you can imagine (vacuum cleaners, radios) are shown in their time periods. Oh, and then there is the museum's namesake, Vance Kirkland! You can see works of art from his distinct periods. How they changed and evolved throughout his life. You can also see his studio & how he created some of his paintings. Some of his later paintings look wonderfully like the photos of stars & galaxies well before the photos were possible. Did I mention you can get a free tour for more info prior to exploring on your own? All in all, this unique museum is well worth your time to learn, explore, & enjoy. I know my friend and I did & we both became members!

Now in the new location the expanded gallery space is filled with paintings, sculpture and pottery mostly from Colorado or inspired by the landscapes in Colorado. And, of course, all the kool furniture and housewares collected by Kirkland. What a unique collection and I would recommend a visit for anyone visiting or living in Denver. A great collection of Kirkland's own art through his various periods and life. You are guaranteed find something you did not know existed and be surprised by the wide range of objects on display.

Kirkland Museum is a very unique and cool Museum. It is full of decorative arts, paintings and galleries and I appreciate they have gallery rooms which gives emphasis on local artists. My visit here is definitely worth it and I will definitely come back!

I went to see the life work of Vance Kirkland and discovered so much more. Starting with parking right at the door for only $5 in downtown Denver!!! (When you get your ticket validated.) The front desk staff was friendly and explained the layout of the museum. We started with the five stages of Kirkland's work from watercolor as a young man to the famous dot paintings. We chose to see his studio next with an intimate look at where he worked and the sad story of three marriage proposals. His wife stopped coming when he moved to abstract art because she didn't understand it. Sad. Six rooms of period collections and many many Colorado artists! Loved every minute. Plan at least three hours.

What a gem right here in Denver! Beautiful building focused on the collection. A gorgeous, unique collection with SO MANY items in what I thought was a much smaller space. Just fantastic. If you love fine arts and museums, give yourself a treat and go.

This new fine and decorative arts museum is excellent. Kirkland’s work went through numerous styles and phases. You’re bound to find some of his works that will delight. Kirkland painted what he wanted to, rather than what was always commercially popular. Some of his works leave me cold, while others are simply breathtaking. But the star of this collection may we’ll be the decorative works. Although the decorative arts collection is broad and excellent, the mid-twentieth-century is particularly fine. A lot of love, care, knowledge and investments went into the mid-century modern collections on display here. The groupings are arranged in sensible rooms that place the objects in proper design context. It just makes sense. My only complaint is that not all lights are illuminated, and some of the labels are obnoxiously large. That distraction can be forgiven in light of what has been shared here with the public. Fortunately there is an age restriction at this museum. There are no uncontrolled children to be seen. No screaming kids threatening to knock over the works. Thank you, very much! Parking is provided on site, although the price is higher than on the street. If you’re staying longer than a couple of hours, there may be a bump-up charge for the privilege of convenience. We spent at least three hours here, but most people can probably see the highlights in 2. I highly recommend a visit!

I’d call it a hidden gem, but that would imply no one knows about this great museum. Filled with art from burner outs styles, this was a great afternoon trip with friends. The rear of the museum is an actual house that was relocated for preservation and is part of the waking tour. You can see the artists studio and other rooms, presented just as if he had stepped out for the day and planned to return.

I recently got to explore this incredible museum over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. I hadn't heard of Vance Kirkland before, but still thoroughly enjoyed his paintings that spanned many decades and as many styles along the way. It also features an incredible collection of furniture, with nearly every iconic piece designed in the list 70 odd years from Wegner to Eames to Saarinen. Glass display cases showcase what appeared to number in the 10,000s of ceramic and glassware from the 1800s onward. Anyone could find something to enjoy and one could easily spend hours here. My only gripe might be that there are so many objects that it's a bit overwhelming at times, but still all the more reason to return in future. All in all, a wonderful museum wuth a world class collection in the heart of Denver.

This was a great spot dedicated to one of Colorado’s most reputable artists. You can tell much work went into the building and the collection.
