Reviews of South Carolina State Museum

Although it's showing its age in places (some of the exhibits are 25+ years old) the museum is clearly undergoing a renewal. Many signboards and displays have recent updates, exhibits are being tweaked, new displays are going on. It's true this isn't the state of the art museum it was in the early 90s, but it's still a solid place to pick up on state history and I still love coming here to see what's been updated since my last visit. Watching the changes from one visit to the next in almost real time has been pretty exciting!
In good weather, definitely check out the observatory. Even if it's closed due to clouds or rain, they're always happy to have a chat about the telescope and show off pictures they've taken with it, which is extremely cool. The updated space exhibits are also fantastic, as are the telescopes on display and the recent acquisitions hall. Showing its age in places, yes, but like I said it's still definitely worth the visit.

Great place to explore. The building itself is cool. The planetarium is a great experience. Also do the observatory. Impressive telescope and knowledgeable staff. The other displays throughout are fantastic, but there isn't much change. Still, I enjoyed repeated visits. The manually powered submarine model is fascinating. We went this last time for the eclipse. The staff members really make you feel welcome.

We visited with our 3 children and wasn't sure if it would keep their attention. We were pleasantly surprised as they had a great time. Their were so many awesome things to see and so much history there. We also really enjoyed the planetarium as well. The staff was also very friendly and was very helpful and the bathrooms were very clean.

I went to this museum as a chaperone with my kid’s school. I was expecting a more updated and modern museum. Some part were looking old. Overall we liked it, but there were not much signs showing which way we should go, and since it’s a big building it is a must. It took the teachers almost fifteen minutes to find the lunchroom. 4D was very good, kids loved it.

This is definitely a gem. They have 4 floors of exhibits. We didn’t get thru it all today. They have kid friendly exhibits as well. They have a gift shop an they also show mini movies. Today admission was $1 per person. ( First Sunday of each month).

A great museum stop while passing through Columbia. It has such a varied selection of topics from history, to space, to dinosaurs. Very impressed with the old telescope collection they have. The working historical telescope (from the 1920's I recall) was in action and setup to view the sun on my visit. Great gift shop with quality products from South Carolina too.

What a fun place to discover a little bit about everything. The stars, the sea, the land, technology, people. This museum has it all and everyone at every age is sure to have fun. The is a cafe for snacks, a gift shop, planetarium, and hands on activities throughout. It is four levels of fun. It is handicap accessible and elevators are handy. It is a lot of walking so if you do have mobility issues they have provided benches throughout for a rest.

We spent about an hour during the $1 First Sunday of Month special with two adults and a six year old. We all had a good time, but there are at least five exhibits with sound/button features were not functioning at the time.

My family and I went on a saturday. There were people there but it was not crowded. The building is old but not worn out. Maintained with that Southern charm. Many many items to see. We were there for almost 4 hours and still did not get to everything. They have something for anyone who enjoys history, artifacts, knowledge and exploring the past. Wear shoes that are meant for walking and standing, you will need them. Elevators available for anyone and the staff is very helpful. The gift store was fantastic. So much to purchase to look at. Items for all age ranges. Home decor, reading material, toys and games for children, even lotions and candles, soaps and hand creams. Excellent place to go for a Saturday if you're looking for something that is not expensive.

This museum is AMAZING! 4 floors of soooo much information and exhibits. I got there at 11 thinking I’d be there thinking I’d be there just a couple hours but 4hrs later I was still there enjoying myself. Such a great way to spend a day.
