Reviews of Elfreth's Alley Museum
Dallas
Interesting piece of history, no charge to walk the property. I found it interesting that 29 of the 32 homes are privately owned and occupied. You get a feel for how people lived in the 16 and 1700s. Looks like they have very specific rules where you can't update the property without deconstructing the historical significance. The museum was closed when I visited so I can't speak to that. If you are unaware, the claim to fame for this alley is it's the longest continuously occupied homes in the country.

History buffs will love this spot. Dating back to 1703, this street is known as being the oldest continuous neighborhood in America. Located n Old City, Philadelphia, Elfreth’s Alley is made up of 32 homes including a museum, Elfreth’s Alley Museum. In years outside of the Covid pandemic, Elfreth’s Alley hosted a “Deck the Alley” event which included caroling, holiday festivities, and self-guided tours of 13 private homes. This cherished landmark is a great place for photos and saunters through time but be aware that many of the buildings are current private residences so decorum and respectful visiting are necessary for all visitors.
Tomas Strouhal
Did not visit the museum, but only walked the Alley. It’s neat to see the oldest residential street in America, so history buffs (and ghost hunters) will love it here. It’s also well-kept and clean. If you’re a tourist visiting, please respect the residents and houses!
Kelly Cambridgeport
The museum was closed by the time I got there, so I am rating just Elfreth's Alley. The alley is historic and reminds me of some of the narrow streets in Beacon Hill, Boston. A fun walk, especially with kids. I felt like I had been transported back to the colonial times.
good times
Twice a year the homes are opened up so that visitors can look inside. We were fortunate enough to visit on that day.
They had storytellers, singers and people dressed of the period. The residence of the houses let you look into their living rooms and some let you walk into the house.
Kailey Parks
We weren't able to visit the museum itself, because it was closed - but this street is SO gorgeous and you feel transported in time. It's the longest preserved and inhabited street in the US. So cool - visiting the week before Xmas meant every door had the cutest wreaths.
M Lawrence
It costs $3 to get in. It takes you through some of the oldest homes in the US down the oldest street in America. A cool expirience only lasts about 15 minutes.
Doctor Bryan Stoops
I was not able to visit the museum, but there is no charge to walk Elfreth's Alley itself, so I spent quite a lot of time exploring it. Elfreth's Alley is yet another little slice of American history to be explored in Philadelphia. It's really fascinating and the Alley is really quite beautiful.
Danny Mike
Such a quiet and peaceful alley. This is such a pleasant break from the city commotion.
The humble houses and the cobblestone road really set you in the mood of the 17th century.
The area around this is usually busy. Nearest parking is around 4 blocks away, at the base of the Benjamin Bridge. 15$/day - Park America

Stunning historical little street. Super charming and definitely worth a visit if you’re touristing Philly. Yes, people still live there!

The Elfreth’s alley museum is located in a unexpectedly calm area of Philadelphia that definitely doesn’t pose any danger at all.
This landmark/museum is definitely recommended by me, as the landmark is free to access and the museum is only optional.
The atmosphere around this alley is definitely weird when compared to regular roads in Philadelphia, 100% a must visit.
Cindy Hamil
Such a beautiful street little street. Made of cobblestones so walk carefully. Great spot for photos. Be respectful of residents.
Jeff Cockman
Visited during a walking tour of Philly. Had been to historic center many times but had never visited Elfreth’s Alley. Definitely worth adding to your itinerary!
Stephanie Rolon
Absolutely Stunning. Words can describe- I felt like walking through time. It’s 300 years of history.
Mendy O
This is a great Instagram spot! The alley is so cute and quaint! It's cool to think that people still live in these house until today! This is not the only cobblestone street in Philadelphia, but it it's definitely the most famous and I think the nicest.
Rachel Reinholm
One of the coolest places I’ve ever been to!
Take a walk into history!
People have been living in these houses since the early 1700’s.
I went at night and had many moments to myself as there were little to no people there
Please respect everyone’s home and space but have fun and take lots of pictures!!
Carrie Wolford
Cute take-me-back-in-history site. It’s a short walk from the Betsy Ross house if you happened to be on the hop on hop off bus tour.
Lynn Whisler
Didn't get a chance to go inside the museum but these buildings/homes are so unique and amazing.
Kerry Smialek
Wow what a great historic alleyway ! I loved the boot washes when the people used to scrape their dirty boots so they would not get the insides of their house dirty,
Maggie Niehoff
Had my wedding photos done here. Very historic feel and well kept
Lisa S
This is such a nice little block to check out while visiting Philly. It is amazing on how these buildings have stood the test of time and that people still live in these homes. Everything looks very well maintained and cared for. You feel transported to the 1700s walking down this block.
Mark Barnes
This place was awesome. I had no idea it even existed. It does feel a little weird that people live in these with tourists out front. It's like walking back in time.
Cole Ash
Beautifully maintained alley of homes. Super impressed by the neighborhood's commitment!
Martin Roberts
This historic and picturesque alley in Philadelphia is worth a visit. Museum was closed, probably covid related, but a walk up and down this alley is very worthwhile.
Danielle Charette
I feel priviledged to be able to walk on this Alley, it allows you to be back in times or even be like in Europe, I loved it.
Many thanks to everyone that lives on that Alley to keep this open to public, I appreciated.
Simply Cherie
It was a perfect “about to rain” morning in Philly, which added to the ambience of walking through this quaint, 300 year old street. The 32 homes are occupied. But there was one for auction.
During the 18th century, businesses operated out of their private residences. But as factories sprung up, work moved out of their houses. But this street was preserved with all the architectural details, flower boxes, shutters, and cobblestone.
There’s a museum that offers tours and a gift shop. They operate out of original homes. Check the website for times. They also offer an audio tour.
Residents celebrate the season on the first Saturday of December with carolers, baked goods, and cider, allowing visitors into their festively-decorated homes. They also open their homes on Fête Day in June.
Since this is a residential neighborhood, they request visitors to be quiet.
It’s walking distance from Penn’s Landing. So we took the SEPTA train to Old City and walked to Penn’s Landing to take pictures by the water. Then we found a small deli/coffee shop at the Waterfront for breakfast. From there, we walked to Elfreth’s Alley.
If you enjoy historic landmarks, then this is a must-see while in Philly.
Carol Pautsch
It's an amazing piece of history, but it's also a bit odd that people live in these homes that tourists are walking all over.
Antoinette Levitt
Wonderful ambiance. Feels like being back in time. Museum staff (volunteers) were delightful. Met a couple who have lived on alley for 45 years. She let us peek inside.
A must do when visiting Old City Philadelphia!!!
Norman Tweet
A great place to go if you want to see how Philadelphia looked back in the 18th century. Most of the buildings are private residences, so try not to bother anyone.
I'd give five stars, but the museum itself is only open seasonally, and at odd hours. Be sure to verify if you want to go inside. But the alley itself is open all day, all year. Worth a quick visit for history buffs.
Steph Ald
Really cute. One of the oldest streets in america holds a lot of history. I found it interesting people still lives there. There is an audio tour you can play on your phone for a small fee ($3). We got to go inside of one of the houses which were preserved (again $3). It wasn't worth it.
Wade Williams
Free of charge to walk down the street. Very cool piece of history!
CassieRae McMurtry
I am a lover of all things vintage. This quiet little Alley is beautiful. A not-very-well-known street tucked away, but the history it holds is fascinating.
Donald Hower
Innovative, charmimg, & clever could describe this particuliar museum in a nutshell. It's America's oldest Alley so it's worth at least one visit. The houses are well preserved & the exhibits, giftshop will certainly surprise you! The staff was friendly and enthusiastic about performing their job duties! I would go back again, ESPECIALLY AROUND THE HOLIDAYS!
Chris6d
A really cool spot to check out, especially if you are into history in any way. The alley is serene, quaint and well-decorated, and the surrounding area is also nice. If you want to get a glimpse of how the 1700s looked, check this place out.
Yael W
Nice easy walk. Very quaint and it felt special to be able to admire an old and historical place... kept in such great shape! Glad we stopped and strolled around here. Worth a visit if you are in the area.
Cameron So
People actually live here so it was quite unexpected when a man pulled up his in SUV and entered his home.
An interesting historic place but nevertheless lacklustre for obvious reasons. If I lived here, I'd also never open my curtains.
Dee
So much history and beauty on such a small street! Just beware of visiting on the weekends. It's definitely a tourist attraction. Make sure to grab something to eat at United by Blue right down the street !
kim spallinger
This was probably my favorite sight in Old City. Please download the audio tour. Look for the sign as you enter the block of homes. There’s a small fee ($3) and there’s an app/website involved. But it’s worth it to hear the history of these homes. It’s maybe a 15 minute tour.
Carl Kleine-Weischede
Worth the short visit to walk into this historical alley of Philadelphia. Nostalgic, historic, classic located in the heart of Philadelphia, it is still inhabited. The apartments are lovely and beautifully decorated with autumn motif at this time of the year. This lovely quarters is not too far from Betsy Ross House, located on 2nd Street N and Front. I accidentally bumped into this Elfreth’s Alley while walking to find where Betsy Ross House on Arch St. There are not too many people walking here but the quarters is so great it brings a lot of nostalgic feelings.
Illia Petrychenko
Very nice "Dutch style" or old England place!
Small street, but very clean,сomfortable, as if set off 300 years ago.
You feel the spirit of that time!
Dicken Doe
Unspoiled 18th Century street, all the more impressive for being stuck between two streets of unplanned concrete.
The people that live here make a real effort to keep it pristine.
Be respectful, people love in these houses and must get tired of any loud visitors.
Lynda Simon
Beautiful. Not sure I'd like to live here with the constant flow of people but a stunning place. Transports you back to a simpler time. Each house is special and the entire laneway is special. A gem.
Gurpreet Virk
An interesting place to see some old houses from 18th and 19th century.
Prem Patel
This alley has certified houses!! It’s so cool to see houses that were built in the 1700s they are nicely preserved. Unfortunately can’t go inside them since people live inside however the history of each house is written outside. It’s a great historic landmark.
Mary Evans
Homes from the 1700s! Beautiful colors. Free to explore.
Julio
Interesting place to visit, even though it’s very well preserved sadly it’s very small
MICHAEL TATE
What a historically cool street. Our hotel was only a couple blocks away, so had to check it out and so glad we did.
Trevor Guilday
Elfreth’s Alley is a must-see for anyone visiting Philly. So much history and they’ve done a great job preserving the original homes. Highly recommended.
Bryan Scarano
Such an amazing experience spending the weekend in the alley!! So much history and it's absolutely beautiful!! Can't wait to plan another trip!!
Dan Reamer
This historic street has the oldest houses in the country, and they are still in use today! It’s a small alley-type street near downtown Philly. You can’t go inside the houses because obviously people live there but there’s plenty to see on the outside and it makes for some great photo-ops!
Allison Siegel
I love being able to have the feeling I walked back in time and this is exactly what this area does. It's pretty neat to know the home's are still occupied as will, but also keep that in mind while touring... be respectful as people are trying to enjoy being in their own homes.
greg macer
Why wouldn't you want to walk down the oldest continually lives on Street in America. Had to stay at the Holiday Inn by the Ben Franklin bridge for a conference at the Convention center like a mile away and this street was on my route! It's like walking down history minus everyone talking selfies and photos with family on their phones (guilty as well, but you got to document that experience!). It's free and quick and helps you just get that old Philadelphia, old City, early America vibe. Check it out!
Anna Aminov
Absolutely loved that place! It’s a small street with cozy unique vibe that makes you feel like you are back in time. Been there in summer and winter, both times it was a nice experience. But be ready to find it more crowded in summer.
Marc Abrams
Elfreth’s Alley is a must see colonial enclave of beautifully maintained houses that have been continuously occupied since C. 1702. The charming row is a prime example of early British colonial life in the America of Ben Franklin and William Penn. A visit feels like a trip through a time machine, and demonstrates the continuing benefits derived from preservation of historic sites.
Matías Gagliardone
Lovely alley the looks as if it’s stuck in time. The houses are intact from the early XX century, but people are still living in some of them.
The Alley Museum is worth a visit to learn how they used to live and take a look at the old furniture and other stuff from yore.
Matt Schapper
Cool little piece of history tucked into a side alley of Philly. Most the homes are privately owned but one is open as a little museum. You can go through for a 3 dollar donation. Worth checking out if you are looking for a cool piece of history.
Ajith Rajeswari
Travel back in time with this visit to the elfreths alley, the street is colorful and well maintained as in 1700s , could not visit the museum as it was closed, not crowded on a July Monday
Frieda Wiley
Although the community is rather small, this neighborhood is worth a stroll because if it’s historical significance if nothing else. The neighborhood, the streets, and houses are all well maintained, and it feels like you are literally transplant it back in time to walk through. If you’re not used to walking on really old roads or cobblestone, my advice is to wear thick-soled sturdy shoes.
Natalia Spinelli
Our family did a Free Tours by Foot tour in Philly and it was amazing!!! We learned so much about this historic city!
Mel Noble
The museum was closed but the alley was nice.
Chris Taylor
This was probably the most tourist heavy part of my trip to Philadelphia. The street is beautiful at this time of year. Worth a quick stop if you find yourself wandering the area.
Gary & Sheila
Very nice, historical important place for USA
Lucio Rafael
Such a nice and cute alley! They're still residents living there. Beautiful gardens and well cared.
Matthew Blackburn
Parking is rough and they will tow you but this little alley is magical. Worth a trip for some pictures. Go visit the oldest street in America!
Indrayani Thakare
Alley to a different era! Loved how the housed been preserved in this alley People please respect the privacy of the residents as 29 out of 32 houses are still being used.
Crystal S Conn
Beautiful street.. I look forward to reviewing once things open up more. Wish more of the city was preserved this way.
Ed Diez
It's a street....not sure what else to say 😂 the houses are beautiful and of course there's a lot of history to appreciate …
Jim Foster
We took our oldest granddaughter and we all loved it. She was amazed at the old sites and houses. We also walked to the Betsy Ross House, which is very close to this alley.
Courtney Cross
Pretty houses, private property, so please be respectful.
David Downey
This off-the-beaten-path spot is definitely worth the trip for those interested in history and novelty. The houses here are kept in good condition and it feels like an authentic trip down a Philadelphia street in the 18th Century. Although there's nothing explicit "to do" here, it's wonderfully photogenic. The current residents have some interesting decor that make it more interesting than it might otherwise be. Toward the eastern end of the street in a little side alley that was really interesting to explore.
Amy M.
Amazing historical brick alley in Philly with the original homes from the late 1700’s. Worth the visit to explore American history.
Valinciea
Very nice. My first time visiting
Breanna Thompson
Such a unique experience going somewhere so well encapsulated in time. Felt like I was back in the 1700's! Would suggest checking out if you like history or just getting good photos
Shatabdi Katha
Elfreth's Alley is said to be the oldest inhabited residential street in America. This street is 300 years old almost . On my recent trip to Philadelphia, I visited this cute little alley. This alley is lined with 32 houses, each of them are cute and colorful. This is such a picturesque cobble stoned alley . If you want pictures, then this alley is perfect as well. As you walk you'll see that the houses are really old , and you'll find a few more alleys in between the houses, some of them have a little history written in some boards . Loved walking in this alley, very historic and felt great looking at these old houses . Don't forget to get some great pictures !

A very realistic street showing how US cities in colonial times looked like. Only pity is that more streets like that haven't been preserved in Phili.
Alex Serebrov
Oldest street in US. Really well preserved piece of history. Must see place for anyone who's visiting Philadelphia and has interest in history.
Shaprieh Bean
Seeing the oldest neighborhood in Philly was pretty cool. There's 2 units opened to visitors that you can tour. Fee is nominal, only $3. Also there is a "selfie" station where you can dress up in period pieces and have your photo taken if that's your thing. There are residents living in the other units but they were super nice with all of the people outside their front doors. There's not a ton to see but can get some nice photos.
Christinabobsquarepants
Great and beautiful place to check out! Rich with history. There is a small museum you can see that gives you a little educational background on the location and it’s homes there. The museum tickets are $3 each. You can see how the homes were like in the 1700’s. The museum is only open on the weekends and they close in the afternoon so I’d recommend checking the hours and going early before you go. There isn’t much to see here. It will be a short trip but definitely worth a trip. I enjoyed it.
Charity Coe Christensen
Amazing walk back through time! The museum was small but we'll staffed and very informative...And Elfreths Alley Cat is a bake shop that offers a sweet treat on your trip.
Rob Bauer
Beautifully preserved early 18th century street. Make sure to check out the intricate details on things like the door knobs, mail slots, boot cleaners, shudder hinges, etc. Also be sure to check out Bladen's Court while you are there.
Jonathan Douek
I had the pleasure of living here for six months. Every day brought new visitors, and the tour guides would always have interesting facts about this historic street. It's possible that I photobombed you as you photographed the houses
Jesse Thompson
Very cool place to visit. Not sure how people live here though. I have soo many questions.
A Mac
Beautiful alley. Highly recommend you to visit it, walk around for a few minutes and enjoy the colorful houses and flowers around.
Mason Aramian
The museum is really small, but it is interesting to see the inside of the old architecture. Not much information Inside either. The yard in the back is quite beautiful though. 😍 I would suggest skipping the whole ordeal but if you really want to see the inside of an old house go ahead. …
Viraj Gadgil
With 10-15 min walk from Liberty bell and 4-5 min from Penn's Landing, this alley takes you into the past. Houses built in 17th/18th century give you a chance to imagine the historical view of the city. You can park on Market street for half an hour and get a quick ride of this place. Street lights in the evening make it more beautiful. Check out the museums in #124 and #126.
Jessica Silvia
Adorable little street with an awesome history. Loved taking a stroll down the cobblestones
Daniel VanDeKerkhove
Cute. Well-kept. Scenic.
But definitely a short-lived visit; the whole thing can pretty much be seen and walked through in ~10 minutes. Worth visiting if you're in the area, but I wouldn't plan your trip around it.
E. M.
Cool place to visit for free. Be sure to look for the off-center pathway with little millstone courtyard.
H Cap
It is a little area of tiny but cute old rowhouses. There are people that live there so be respectful when you visit.
Brad Paradis
Very cool quick stop. The construction and bags of garbage all over the street kinda take a way from it a little bit but it’s worth a stop.
Roshan Abbas
Great history this place has. Book a tour it’s very informative. We got our guide from Airbnb experiences.
Hannah Poulton
A must-go if you’re in Philly. It’s so quaint and absolutely beautiful - picture perfect. It’s a 10 minute walk from Liberty Bell and although it’s a small street, it’s definitely worth it.
Laura
Beautiful historic street to visit!- so charming, go early to avoid crowds, and be mindful these are people’s homes.
Brian Gunn
If you're a history buff or a casual connoisseur of all things historic, then you do not want to miss this hidden gem. It's off the beaten path of the regular tourist spots, but that makes it that much better. Be sure to respectful because people still live in what's billed as the nation's oldest continuously lived in residential street.
C J
Great little picturesque alley in Philadelphia. Takes a little under 10 minutes to stroll at a very comfortable pace. People actually still live in the houses, which is pretty interesting!
Fabiola Portella
Cute and historical street
Agranya Jampala
It's a beautiful place to visit and it's like this huge historical treasure hidden in plain sight. Definitely a must see!! A few moments in this alley and you will fall in love with it!!
Rudy
All of these homes are the original houses, this is the oldest block of houses in the entire country dating back to 1730.
Marco Fantin
It's a cute little alley. That day, the snow was falling on us and on the American flags on the street. Be sure to look into all the nooks and crannies, there are some little side streets. It's nice because people still live there. It's probably best to go there when it's not so cold, but at least nobody was there, only me and fransisca very brave she was
Peach Twentyfifth
Very pleasant spot! It was clean, quite picturesque, and great for pictures.
However, do bear in mind that these are still private residences and that you are politely requested to behave and keep quiet!
Jordan P
I definitely think it's worth checking out, but dear God do I feel bad for the people that live there, having to deal with constant foot traffic through their neighborhood (I'm sure they know that before they move in though). That said, it's a really cool look into the old architecture and the way these streets have evolved.
Ilana Bouskila
Picturesque little street with lovely old houses, many still inhabited.
Laura Albright
This is only about 400' long, but it's worth a stop if for no other reason than to absorb some old world vibe. Charming backdrop for insta pictures.
Turner Brothers
We stopped by Elfreth's Alley to get a closer look at one of the residents sewer lines which is located underneath the beautiful brick sidewalk and also underneath the already once restored slate and stone street. When walking the street, one resident of Elfreth's Alley pointed out a very small similar road that ran adjacent from where we were. It looked exactly how it should of. A road that took you back in time , 316 years to be exact. It was a short 3 minute walk a time portal into the year 1702. I am glad we had the pleasure of stopping by and can only hope to be a part of the excavation and restoration that will take place here.
Monica De los Ríos
Lovely place and amazing history.... I enjoy walking around this place you can feel the history🙌🏻 …
Thomas Lorrain
Very nice to see one of the oldest streets of the USA. There are some groups of tourists but this won't spoil your visit.
Caryn L Laubach
Lovely, little historic street. Visited on a Saturday, late morning, the area was a little crowded with guided tour groups, but that wasn't unexpected. The accompanying photo is taken from Bladen's Court looking out onto Elfreth's Alley with a bonus kitty included 😊 …
Janitha Batagoda
The history is admirable and love the architecture. It is good they preserved this street for the younger generations to see.
JaMe Castro
It was cool to see an alley with homes that have been consecutively occupied since the 1700’s.
Beth McLaughlin
We were lucky enough to arrive on the annual Fete Day in June, when homeowners offer tours of the first floor of their homes. The museum was also open and there were re-enactors playing music and demonstrating historical crafts. The alley is quaint and fascinating. We spent several hours here and really enjoyed the history and the ambiance. This place is unique, not only because of its age (dating to 1703, it is older than the United States!), but because it was a working class neighborhood full of tailors, blacksmiths, carpenters, bakers, and day laborers - mostly newly-arrived immigrants. Keep an eye out to spot an old second-story plaque on one of the homes indicating it was insured by The Philadelphia Contributionship for the Insuring of Houses from Loss by Fire - the nation’s first insurance company, founded by Ben Franklin!
Jody Veldkamp
Took the Founding Father's Walking Tour from Urban Adventures. It was a great way to get a look at a lot of the historic area. Then choose the places you want to visit and spend time. Elfreth's Alley a beautiful look at colonial Philadelphia.
Mikaela E
Very cute and worth a visit if you are in old town.
Brian
One of the oldest continously lived on street in the USA. Very old brick revolutionary townhouses. So sad to be surrounded by empty lots. Be aware that people still live in these buildings. Please mind your voice volume and actions while wondering the street.
Brian Hagan
Must see when visiting Philly...quaint historical street, known for being the oldest continuously inhabited street in America. Recommend checking out for those visiting from out of town, like myself!
Tanya Koller
I would live to live here for the historical significance alone. Quaint homes, and seeing it decorated for the Fall was an extra bonus.
Mark Jewell
Incredibly attractive alley. I feel a bit sorry for the people living in the buildings with people constantly walking by but definitely worth going
Amanda Reiser
Cute and historical street near the old town area of Philadelphia. There are periodically open houses where you can go inside and tour two of the historical houses. The rest of the homes are private residences but are well maintained for a nice walk into history.
Matt Peppes
Beautiful street to walk down, especially for those people who love history!
Senem Ekiz
Great photo shoot street but nothing special about it. There are plenty of other street similar in the area.
Flex-N- Fly
I spent the day in Philly and decided to stop at Elfreth's Alley. It was such a cute little alley with multiple homes that people currently occupy. Over all I really like that neighborhood. Definitely a must see in philly.
Jeff Vaughan
A charming street that has maintained it's character and charm. It's worth a quick stroll and provides an eye-pleasing backdrop for photographing people.
Connie Medsker-Bystrom
Amazing experience!!!! One of the best places to see for a piece of American history!
Mark Cosgriff
A nice add-on to visiting the street which allows a brief look behind the curtain, so to speak. Worth the nominal entrance fee.
sandeep kommuri
Historic alley , even some houses are owned by private but still they are not allowed to remodel outside due to city’s decision
James
This is a cool place to visit, it's like stepping back in time, very small house's and of course very small in side as well,it's the oldest street in America, only one house you can go in but it gives you an idea of what it was like in 1700 and the start of America.
Eric Gregg
Very nice walk. Great for photos!
Chris Gutierrez
Cool for a quick photo op. There is always people walking down the street so it’s hard to get a picture with no one in the background but no biggie.
David Saakov
Beautiful and well kept home with a very rich history that the locals were very willing to share! Definitely worth the stop if nearby!
Chelsea Sheldon
So beautiful and interesting. A piece of the past that everyone should take the time to see.
Michael Meltchenko
Beautifully preserved alley from colonial times. People still live here. Felt like time traveling for a brief moment. Wish more streets were like this.
Frederik T
A must visit when in Philly, beautiful narrow street of historical homes that are still being lived in. Easy stroll from there down to Race Street Pier and the rest of the waterfront.
Bryant DeBildt
Nice little area away from a lot of the noise. Good place to walk through if you don't mind going a little out of the way. Not big enough to warrant it's own day though a.
Noah Palau
It's a wonderful stop of you have like 15 minutes. It's a small side street that is very much like taking a step into the past. It gives an excellent perspective on how people used to live over 250+ years ago and how one can use the some housing into the present day. If you do choose to go be mindful that people do still live there and that it is a primarily residential street. Enjoy the history but respect the people and the houses!
Rociel Sarita
Very very very beautiful street! From 32 houses, there are 29 that have people living. Impressive!
C Schreck
Loved wandering this historic street on a quiet winter evening. The homes are lovely, close and full of the spirit of Historic Philadelphia.
ashutosh bijoor
Beautiful cobbled stone street with well preserved homes on either side
Vyacheslav Murmanov
One of the must visit places when you are in Philly, first time. One of the oldest streets in US.
Traci Jackson
Pretty awesome getting to see this place. Definitely worth a trip.
Hill B.
Very cute and well maintained piece of US history. I would love to visit again when the museum is open, it was very quiet in the winter.
Tom Van
Such a cool place that's unchanged for hundreds of years! Great place to take pictures!
J Williams
Elfreths Alley is the oldest residential area in Philadelphia. Beautiful buildings and historic significance.
Matthew Dietzenbach
This is the oldest residential street in America. It’s fun to walk down so narrow street. Can’t believe people actually live there. There is one for sale if your interested.
Jason Barney
Elfreth's is gorgeous and oozing with history. Reminds me a bit of Acorn Street in Boston with the colonial style townhouses, cobblestone and narrow lane. Don't skip by without skipping through.
Jane Guldin
Really enjoyed getting to see the oldest continuously residential Street in the US. Well worth the stop on the trolly ride.
Katarzyna Gapska
Beautiful place! Colours, architecture and the feeling you get just by walking there;) even some hidden backyards!
Andre Lee
Great overnight cozy spot when old Philly is your goal.
Leticia Amorim
It is an open-air place, very interesting to visit. If you want to take good pictures schedule to go early in the morning when there aren't many people!
Lindsay Bruns
Did a walking tour and loved it. This would total be a place I would love to live in.
Arjun Shenoy
Great place to walk here. The place is well maintained. You can either walk for free or go to the museum for 3$. Better to park somewhere else and walk here.
Azamat Suleimenov
One of the must visit places in Philly! We bring here all our friends who are first time in the city. One little tip: if you are driving you can park a car near Franklin's Fountain creamary, grab some delicious ice cream and walk towards the Alley. Definitely go inside one of the houses, and also in a backyard to hear some stories.
marc P.
Very nice street, but it is only one street...
Michael Tallarico
We love our history and this alley takes you back in time! Great little, well preserved historical area.
Matthew O.
Cool little alley that takes you back in time. None of the buildings that were supposed to be open were. But still very interesting.
Jad Assaf
Very historic street. A must see if you’re nearby.
Ziad Itani
Wonderful and charming place to spend some time and only few steps from Christ Church a historical Church in Philadelphia.
Kristin Long
You can feel the history when walking on the old cobblestone street! If you love American History, this is a must see atleast once❤
Casey Kathrine
A perfect little historic spot. I wish there had been a little shopping there. Loved that people are still living on this beautiful quiet street.
Sandra Singleton
The history of this alley and how the city and it's residents has preserved it amidst the addition of interstate and growth.
Cassidy S-G
Lovely little spot! Very glad I stopped by and I recommend going all the way to the end of the alley.
Ashley Boltrushek
Little piece of weird history, but remember real people live in the homes :)
Priscila Pereira Aquino
The most beautiful site i've visited in Old City
John Fuentes
Amazing it's still a viable neighborhood
Marie Dry
Really great! Beautiful and quiet on a sunday afternoon, great for photoshoots also! DOn't miss it if your Philly for a few days!
Richard Miller
One of the oldest residential areas in the country. Very cool, and people still live there! That Having been said- it's not something you're gonna spend the day on, or a few hours, but easily a good hour of your time will give you enough of the feel. Although, if you really love photography-which I do not - you could probably spend hours here getting all the really fine details of the architecture and the old style living arrangements. You really shouldn't miss it, but don't plan your day around it!
Jenn E
Beautiful old street. One was even for sale. I think it would be amazing to own something so rich with history. Not to mention they are beautiful buildings, along a lovely quaint cobblestone street.
Benjamin Sommer
Must visit the alley and if you have time the museum. Five stars must visit.
Sean Conner
Great sights, cool curators, and an adorable local alley cat greets many of the visitors. Big downside is a ton of construction by the West entrance.
Marcin
Place that you have to see if you are visiting Philly..
Any time of the year.. its like travel in time .
Chia Chang
a nice and neat little historical alley, the architecture here is pretty cute, good place for photoshooting.
Legendary Reek
I love history and this place is amazing.
Cheyenne Zaremba
Great place for a Philly photo op! Just remember to be respectful of the people who still love in the homes.
Kevin Meier
It's just a block long but well worth the time.
Terry Steele
It was great to see and show the kids.
lolive lolive
The street was cute. However we visited around 5pm and there was trash bags everywhere; It smelled bad and took all the charm away from the buildings.
Stephen LaGuardia
Oldest continually occupied street, vey picturesque with quaint shuttered windows and traditional brickwork. Limited activities for tourists. No facilities
Joe Carter
It'll be a quick stop on your Philly adventures but it's considered the oldest neighborhood in America and a really picturesque street
Ruya Liu
Went after sunset, pretty dark, didn't get to see much.
Nyorquina Paty
Its great to see how well these 300 year old homes are preserved. They are so beautiful and still inhabited. The review that said there is nothing to do there, probably doesn’t appreciate the beauty of stepping in a place where you can go back in time, in a city that is filled with history
Jill Greenstein
Museum was closed for the season, but the exteriors of the houses were so well cared for and preserved. Lots of historic markers, too. Wonderful!
Tristan Overney
Small but very conserved, that Alley is older than the usa! They also have plaques with historical infos everywhere.
Carrie McCabe
Small, interesting stop with great, helpful staff. They gave us some background on the area and it was worth supporting the alley.
Assel Sagymbayeva
Must go place in Philly. Nice historical spot with a Museum in one of the apartments. Also has small hidden yard.
Misty Busse
It was a beautiful alley taken care of by the residents. The cobblestones are hard to walk on.
Rose Zu
Super cute spot for photos. Great place to take visitors! Our group wasn’t so interested in the Independence Park side of things so this was a great pit stop to get our fill of history.
Marjorie McCue
If I'm in Philly, I always do a run through Elfreth's Alley. It's just lovely! Sometimes I get lucky and can overhear a professional tour. Everytime I go, I swear I'm going to buy the CD tour; I really should...haven't yet. Mostly, I just wander through. It was a cold day so I didn't linger, but the light snow flurries made it especially special. I love this little street.
Elizabeth Kingsbury
So historical! I just loved this part of my Benjamin Franklin Walking Tour! An absolute must see when in Philadelphia!
Jamie Calvert
Loved walking in this early colonial historical area. Our tour guide made this experience rich with information and helped to point out small things that were important elements for the time.
B F
A delightful excursion into the original thread of urban life in American history!
Adriana Luca
Beautifully preserved street. It was a surprise to find out some of the houses are still inhabited
Mohd Bsat
English style small buildings Very beautiful. A must to see.
Kushal Patel
Amazing place and hidden gem
Joe C
Really magical little place. Couldn't stop myself from imaging what it must have been like back in the day be to have such a solid yet petite slice of secure, personal, comforable space in the heart of a new city in a new country while a chaotic war / social unrest (depending on the time period being imaging) whirled all around you. Was lucky enough to be able to speak to one of the private owners of one of the surrounding brick buildings, (most are still privately owned and lived in) and get a little insight.
Eric van den Broek
Authentic and beautiful street/alley. Must see
Caleb A Smith
This is a cute little historic street that is well preserved and packed with charm. It's only a collection of houses on a very short and small street, so it's easy to take it all in without getting tired or losing interest. There's just enough information available on small signs or at the little Museum in units 124 and 126. There may be are there tourist taking a look, but it's important to note that people do live in these houses and to be respectful of their property and peace. It's totally worth a few extra minutes to take a quick stroll through here and look for the little side alley that takes you to the curved bench in a cute little Courtyard.
Jennifer Blumberg
A great piece of history to visit while in Philly!
Martha Portilla
Beautiful historical place! Unfortunately we were there on a day when the two museum houses were not open, but totally worth it!
Tarah Cantrell
I absolutely love the alley, and this museum is a fun activity that adds context to why the alley is still presented in all its eighteenth century glory. There is a lot of potential in this exhibit, which could stand to add first-person interpretation or special events, for example.
Monica M
Really neat that the residents of this historic alley welcome visitors. It’s a quick walk from end to end.
Wilmer Sibre Munoz
It's a amazing place to visit full of history.
Cory Brockert
Different from other places to check out and pretty cool
Rex D
Neat to see such preserved homes, but it's really just an alley. Not much else going on here.
My Brilliant Life
Unique little alley of old homes,
Tara (Face215)
My favorite street in all of Philadelphia. Just amazing piece of history and it has been maintained so well. Americas oldest street where people still live. It’s like walking back in 1703
Chas Kuhn
Very cool. Very quaint. Very expensive. drive through it or walk down it.
Mar Su
Lovely place to walk around and see the house.
Matthew McElroy
This is unique piece of American history, and if you are wandering through Old City or waiting for a scheduled tour at Independence Hall, it is totally worth 20 minutes of your time.
But I grew up 15 minutes across the river and never saw it until I was 39 years old, and in no way do I feel deprived. It is worth a small part of a larger trip, but it isn't anything I feel the need to revisit.
Justin Deng
A must see at Philadelphia!
Vicky's Expedition
Please add this place to your Philly travel list.
James Bowman
Interesting spot, but go Fri-Sun April-October to be able to see the museum and tours.
Heidi Bixby
Nice to wander down and to realize this street has stayed so much the same for two hundred years. It's really fabulous to realize people still keep their homes on the street. If you're a history buff or just a lover of beautiful places, don't miss it.
Thomas Carlson
What is not to love about getting to walk down the first residential Street in the United States of America? Quaint, charming, and tucked away out of sight in old City. It really makes you feel like a bit of a giant, due to how tiny people were back then. All in all it is a very cool little street and is definitely worth a walk down.
Elena Smith
Very cool gem back in time in the middle of Philadelphia. Takes just a few minutes. Must see on the tour of Philly's sites.
Matthew Schoenberg
Classic colonial architecture on the oldest continuously inhabited street in America. What's not to love?
Csilla Deczki
Tiny little street in Philly, but it is very nice to walk through.
Rebecca Rene`e
Honestly not much to this tiny little alley but again, its iconic for being one of the oldest in the entire country. It's a quick walk from end to end but still fairly interesting. I hear that every once in a while a homeowner will open their doors for quick tours which I think is awesome, unfortunately it didnt happen while we were there.
-Alpha Highs-
Its a clean enviornment. It's always filled with tourists and people taking pictures. The houses are very well kept for a historic landmark. Well not to mention that it's still a residential area. The neighborhood is lively and is always kept nice and tidy. Definitely recommend as a tourist attraction, and one of the first stops in Philly!
Jason Kautz
Having never visited Philadelphia prior, this alleyway provided me a connection to a history I'd only studied in school or otherwise beforehand. Highly recommended tourist stop.
Kelsie Housley
Such a cute place and fun to take tourists to! Walking down it’s cobblestone streets make you feel like you’ve gone back in time! I love the free stories they have down the alley that you can listen to during peak tourist times. It’s also a cute place to take pictures if you get the chance. Everyone’s front stoop in cute and has flowers or potted plants.
PF Snacks
Quaint historic street with a museum and beautiful colonial homes open to public temporarily during holidays.
Sara Small
Really neat little area to walk down. It has a museum, but it was closed when we were there. Most of the houses are privately owned, so you can't do any poking around, but it's really cool to just walk down the alley and see the old houses.
Eula Dixon
While this attraction is a bit off the beaten path, I'm so glad we sought it out. The architecture is wonderful, and the preservation amazing. It's hard to imagine a street in the United States that has been occupied since the 1700s. We also visited the small museum, located in one of the houses. The $3 admission fee was well worth it to be able to see the inside of one of these historic houses.
Jennie Marie Sanchez
Interesting museum and experience. A little pricy for the size of the museum and limited things to see, but you know it's going to maintaining the historic site.
Wish there was just more information and it was maybe more interactive.
Barbara Addeo
The museum was closed...we were there on Saturday December 11th ..we walked the historic block nd enjoyed all the details a few little alley ways nd the courtyards ..the doors were decorated for holiday and it was quite quaint ..this is our third time trying to enjoy the museum no luck ..hopefully you will have better luck
Chris Wyatt
Oldest residential street in the United States. It is a quaint cute little alley in Philadelphia.
Brandon Alexander
Very interesting piece of history. Worth a visit if walking nearby, but it is a short alley and can be seen in 5-10 minutes in my opinion.
Brandon Schultz
America's oldest continously inhabited residential street. Charming any time of day, always open. Please be quiet - people actually live here! Explore the courtyards and alleys.
Fredrick Omondi
It's a family friendly zone which is rich in history and accessible to all including people with disability
Fred McEntee
Very neat place like you expect of an old city to look.
Christina S. Munshi
A must see in Philly. It can get crowded, but it is a small street so people are leaving/coming all the time.
Seth Galentine
Reflect at a preserved historical area. Very well maintained.
Carol Muscari
Charming homes. A nice throwback in time.
Zack Seipert
Such a great little historic sight! Literally feels like your stepping back in time when you visit this street. They are doing a great job preserving the homes. One of my favorite sights so far!
Sayali Phatak
If you're into history and historical buildings this place is a quick spot to refresh yourself and dwell into old times!!!
Audrey Wong
A very picturesque little street. The cobblestone street and historic houses give a glimpse of the past.
Andrew Coleman
Great area to visit
Harinder Dhillon
Loved it, quaint and small, reminds me of the UK and cobbled streets. Only minor issue, wish it had benches to sit and made an ice cream stand / shop
Piotr Bober
It's a nice alley, the old building are impressive. They alley is between regular, modern building so the charm is only when you're somewhere in the middle of it, otherwise it seems not in it's place - modern bulding and this old alley.
There are tons of walking tours and if you're not a part of it you'd feel a bit dominated by them.
Chevy2 Girl
So lovely, well-maintained piece of history!
The Fam
Cute and sweet houses, very well kept. We were too late to go into the museum, it is the oldest and smallest/narrowest street in the country, I believe. If you are in the area definitely stop by.
Pit Abilud
look like british architecture in England.
G Marvel
This place was amazing everyone should see this
Brad B
Really worth taking a look at. These historical homes are amazing to view. Wasn't crowded at all when I went which was great. Some other landmarks in the area as well such as the Betsy Ross House so you can certainly find other things in the area to fill out your trip.
N Meier
Cool alley with old houses and original type setting and styling. Cooler alley to visit when it gets hot outside. Also safe for kids to walk around. There's a gathering garden area if you walk far enough in.
Kelly Paras
Charming historic street that makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. Was lucky enough to visit while it was snowing out and the result was a magical winter wonderland. Great place to explore before making your way down to Race Street Pier and the waterfront!
Michael Sautner
A short street with houses that have been there since the 1700’s, but really, just a street. Definitely walk through if you haven’t seen it and are in the area but don’t expect enlightenment. One house gives tours for $5 which is enterprising of the owner.
Tim Nelson
Beautiful place, well preserved. I visited on a Wednesday evening, and was the only person there!
Nazli Abhari
The best way I can put it into words is that it was simply beautiful! You feel like you are walking on a movie set from hundred years ago. Everything has been preserved and people till live in the houses. I highly recommend this little walk to everyone.
Steve Zakrzewski
Elfreth's Alley is the oldest street in Philadelphia, which, relative to the rest of the country, makes it pretty darn old! It is a moderate walk from the Greyhound bus terminal and is notable for the fact that all of the homes on the alley, except for 2 are privately owned and loved in by regular people. There was even a "For Rent" sign on one! You could go live there, on one of the oldest streets in the USA! How cool is that? So, when walking around "Old Town" Philly, take a stroll down ole Elfreth's Alley!
Astrid Lim
I love this place so much!!! A cute, postcard like small alley with historical buildings (people still live there btw!!) and cozy atmosphere. I came near the Christmas time and the decorations were marvelous! Too bad I didn't have time to go to the museum- it opened at 12 on Sundays and I went there in the morning. Hopefully can visit again one day!
Ryan Kevern
Awesome place, didn't know people still lived there!
Andrea Koczur
Wonderful historic street. Amazing how it still exists. Be respectful of the current residents so others can continue to experience the feeling of America's young history.
Achilles Young
Cool history. Tell people to stop throwing trash into the well pump!
Keith Jackson
Every city needs a fancy alley with tiny, well decorated houses. This is Philly's. It's a short walk, but worth it. All the houses have nice flags, the alley and matching decor.
Yes, these houses are occupied and you may see some of the residents. Would go again.
Patricia Ciampa
Beautiful little alley with houses being lived-in. Some families had drawings on their windows which I thought was very cool that they embraced the public being so close to their house. There is also a mini museum but we went after closing time.
Vince Jacono
It is the oldest continuously inhabited neighborhood in the entire United States. Definitely worth a trip. While free most days, there are special days to which you can purchase tickets and go through the houses and they do not disappoint. The people who live there are ridiculously friendly too
Joaquin O
It’s a cool place to see and visit around Philly. It isn’t really a place to spend more than 30 minutes at, just nice and historic area near Independence NHP.
Natalie Thomas
Very cute and full of history! I can’t believe people really live here. The volunteer at the museum was super nice and informative!
Sean Q
Great tour guide and hands on allowing you to hold some older artifacts and clothes from the past, just takes $3. Unique experience walking through house built in 1700s and surrounding courtyard and alley. Read up on the historic Philadelphia gazette each month for events!
Gina Shelby
If you're doing a day full of historical Philly places, don't skip this one! There's not much to do here, other than walking up and down the street, but it is SO CUTE. Homes have been kept very colonial and adorable, as this is the oldest continually inhabited/residential street in the US. It's a self guided event, don't expect anything big or fancy there.
Jameel Farooqui
Small street. Good for pictures full of history
Lu Su
Very historic and beautiful street
Ben Cottrell
This is such an eclectic little street. While we did all we could to respect the privacy of the residents, one home owner was sweeping up outside of his home. We stopped for a quick chat. He was very gracious and kind.
Raquell C
adorable little historical area to stop by if youre near. i wouldn't necessarily go extremely out of my way to go here, but if you have a nice camera (or love photography) this is the PERFECT spot on a beautiful day
Mark Student
Not worth it to me. It's really just a street. Because people still live on it, it isn't maintained to some great historical standard. Plus, because people live here, you have to really be careful as to what you look at or into. It's just an old street surrounded by Philly traffic and modern day construction. Didn't really like it.
Tom Downing
Always an interesting walk down this block. I remember visiting as a kid. It made an impact on me back then to see something as familiar and tangible as a house have differences even I could recognize. Now I take my grandchildren there, and they seem to enjoy it.
It doesn't take long to make a visit. Downside is there's not much for toddlers to do here, but since you don't have to stay long, that's ok.
Paul Hu
The place preserved 18 century houses.
Anibal Acosta
A piece of Americana on the alley. The home of Betsy Ross and many other who's who of Philadelphia
David Clamp
If you are touring the historic district of Philadelphia, especially on foot, take a stroll through Elfreth's Alley. It is a very old and lovely neighborhood, still the homes of citizens, and goes back to before 1800. There's also a very short path around a corner to a side nook with the lovely bench in the garden. Well worth the 10 or 20 minutes it takes to stroll its length. There is a museum here with a very nominal entrance fee, but we did not attend.
Holly Best
Super cute, but if you don't know that the museum is only open on weekends, it's pretty boring. Also, if you're clumsy like me, stick to the sides cause walking on cobblestones is not as easy as one might think.
Wendy Reeves
Amazing how people still live here. Lovely side streets..well maintained.
Sky
One of the historic sites in Philadelphia.
Sara Long
This was a cool place to visit. It really gives you a feel for the time period. We were lucky enough to find an Airbnb here so we got to spend a lot of time here. Worth the visit and walk through. For more information there is a museum and tour available that is super cheap ($3).
Sonam Sharma
Beautiful place to explore if you are short on time
AJ Jain
HISTORY! This street deserves that level of enthusiasm. The houses stand tall from the 1600 and 1700’s like the years have not passed. What makes it even cooler is that most of these homes are privately owned, meaning that families still live in them to this day. The architecture brings you back in time, and with the Betsey Ross house and Christ Church just around the corner it’s a must see in old city!
Diurnal Dayz
Gorgeous and lively street that you can get tours of or take Instagrammable pictures in. Well worth the short walk from Independence Hall. I do feel bad for the residents, though, what with the constant flow of tourists down their picturesque street.
Joshua Smith
Truly like stepping back in time. If you happen to go when it’s raining, the street will be nearly empty. A beautifully preserved piece of American history.
Rick Forney
Play a great place to visit must see oldest houses in the United States
Aubree Karlin Broyles
This was pretty neat. It's the oldest residential street in the country. The homes were pretty. We went when the one you could tour wasn't open, so I was a little bummed to missed that experience, but overall it was cool to see, if you're in the area.
Stoic Peace Warrior
We walked the Alley without a guide and enjoyed the experience. A tour would add to the richness of a visit, as would attending a scheduled event there. One resident was speaking with a guide and group at her front door-- seemed very hospitable.
Charlotte Wright
Nice alleyway of some of the oldest houses in the country. Worth stopping by for a quick look
Sebastian Regeńczuk
Nice place with old times climate
ninad joshi
It is just as the name implies an alley albeit an old one with some of the houses being over 300 years old. You get a free guided tour of one of the houses and there is also a section where you get to try on some colonial period clothes and then take pictures. Would recommend dropping by, its within walking distance from Independence Mall
Grishma Kumar
Do not visit on Sunday evening.. The street was full of trash covers waiting to be picked.. The alley itself is beautiful and rustic and very private and quaint. Parking is an issue around the area.
Dee Pallante (SurvivalJane)
This is the oldest continuously occupied residential street in the USA. It is a beautiful piece of history, but, remember, people live there and don't want to be treated as goldfish in a fish bowl! Respect their privacy!
Verónica Girald
BEAUTIFUL!!!! Not long a walk at all. Its truly amazing amd great for pictures
Cheryl's (#akissatsunset)
Cool place if you are into cool architecture and interesting history. The alley was a road into this original neighborhood. 1 narrow lane for the horse carriages. People were definately shorter back then. Note the height of the doorways. Worth the stroll down the alley..
Shannon Arner
Elfreth's Alley was something that was on all of the historic signs in the Old City, and we decided to go and see what it was all about. Like the other reviews, you will note that it is a tiny little street full of row houses, some still lived in today. The museum must have odd hours because we ventured to it twice and it was closed both times. I'm not sure if it offers something more significant about the area, but we found it to be cool to see, but not something to write home about.
Emmanuella Michel
Beautiful be respectful of the houses actual people live there
patricia h
Very cute little street
Scott Stoecker
Worth the visit. The colorful houses and cobblestone streets give a fantastic view of what old Philadelphia looked like. While a touristy area, it felt more like the homey neighborhood that it was. The Alley gave a more intimate perspective at what the area was before modernization.
Amy Landon
A lovely historic site worth seeing!
Mark Nichols
A real American treasure. I've lived in Philly nearly 10 years and just went there for my first time about five months ago in May. It just happened to be the last trip I would take with my dog. I held him because there was a tour group and maybe 10 other people. I think I heard five different languages just on the small stretch of street. It was beautiful and a cherished memory I will keep with me always.
Jason Kertz
Historic houses and shops in Philadelphia. Recommend the walk around tour.
Lynna Corp.
Open only Tuesday Saturday 10am 4 pm
Larissa Mackay
Very nice place to visist and theres a bridge just a couple feets away.
Marilyn Acheson
So fun to walk this alley, and see rows of homes on either side of the cobble stone road, where our ancestors lived 200 years ago. It appears that modern people still live there! Very narrow, three story homes are connected together like condos, but each a bit different in style or color. Many had the doors decorated for the recently passed Christmas season. Since my husband and I are building, it is especially interesting to see the old architecture. There are occasional very narrow paths closed off by a tiny gate or door, between some of the homes, that lead to a lovely garden area behind them. ( These are not open to the public, but you can peek through the gate sometimes.)
Simply_Richie
While I was in Philadelphia I went on the Philly Grim tour. This spot was one of the many locations we visited during the tour. If you ever get a chance to make it to Philadelphia then this spot is one of the many places you need to see.
Olden Daysways
Liked it, time well spent. Walk down the oldest inhabited street in USA dating from 1702. It's pretty neat. people still live there, so only a couple are open to tour.
Worth the stop to grab some pix. to say you were there.
Abuzar Anas Khan
Must visit for those hunting the old world charm in Philly... Look out for the pop color doors and if you are lucky, get treated by stories from ‘once upon a city’ bench towards the end of the alley. 29 of the 32 houses are still inhabited, do respect the privacy of people living here
Heather Stoffel
What a gem! Staff were friendly and answered all our questions
Syra A
One and only oldest houses/street in America's.. must visit. Very cute small historic street
William Jantsch
Interesting from a historical standpoint, but this narrow street if small houses is not particularly beautiful or engaging. I have no idea why anyone would want to live there.
Kenneth McCreary
Everyone who is touring Philadelphia seems to find this little alley / street area. This is certainly worth a trip if you're in the area. It is quaint, and to me, it is also a little eerie. The residents don't seem to be that friendly, but I can imagine it is a bit stressful with so many tourists walking around your home. Try to be respectful of them, and they have posted lots of signs in front of their homes asking you not to come up to their door area, etc. There's no restaurants or eateries or cafes in the immediate area, so it's really just a place to for quick stroll.
Jim Hilyard
Learned a lot more about this famous street
Kyung Bong
A little bit off the beaten path. Fun example of early American homes and cobblestone roads for kids (and adults) that have never experienced them. Just remember these are actual homes, so please respect the homeowners and their property. Well worth the 5 minute detour from the more popular Betsy Ross house.
Erika Spadafora
Absolutely beautiful. Most of all in the snow when all of the wreaths are up. If you are an architecture nerd this is the place to go! The buildings are beautifully kept up. Dont wear heels!!!
Susan Watts
Loads of fun for the whole family during their Christmas open house. I think they have an open house twice a year. House owners are on property to answer any questions and people dressed in period costumes makes the tour that more interesting. Something I think I'd like to make a tradition.
Leanne M
This alley is an amazing opportunity to see a bit of history. I'm so glad the City and the people who live here upkeep this historical road. This is one of my favourite places to walk by while in Old City
Ali Al-Matouq
I loved the place it make you feels that you lived in their 1800s
Mark Henninger
One of the quaintest streets you'll ever see, this historical block is preserved practically the way it was almost three centuries ago, when it became the nation's first residential street.
Now, if you visit this free attraction, you will see tourists enjoying the quaint and photogenic surroundings. I visited today and saw several photoshoots going on at once, whether it's selfies, a family group shot, or an aspiring fashion model, the setting simply begs for photography.
and the cool thing is, this isn't a theme park or Museum. This is a real street, with real residents.
Give it a visit when you come to Philadelphia, or if you live here and you haven't been, make a point of stopping by. There's no way you won't be affected positively by this driving bit of historical Americana.
And the best thing is, you are in Old City, just a block or two away from tons of excellent restaurants and bars. So, don't miss out on one of the places that makes Philadelphia such a special historical city.
Kevin Yee
Cute little street. Old colonial feel. Neet to walk through, but is only a 15-30 minute attraction. Only one 'museum', more of an residence entrepreneur, and that was only $3.
Jens H
Oldest street in Philadelphia. Lovely to stroll around and have a look at these old houses and streets. Please remember that people are living in the houses. They also have guided tours some time of the day, sadly we missed the tour.
Andrew Toland
Wonderful section of old city Philadelphia! We went with our kids 11 and 8 they had a wonderful time dressing up in the museum. I recommend a visit to see how America was formed.
Holly Williams
Nice historical street. It's an easy 10 minute walk from the liberty bell and independence hall. There's plenty of spots to eat along the way.
Paul Murphy
Not much too it (it’s an alley) but it felt like something super important and cultural and after a day in Philadelphia seeing the sights it felt like a great spot to visit. It’s a shame it’s actually inhabited now by private occupants as that made ‘snooping’ around a little awkward but it had great signage and reference points.
Carrie W. Lane
Cool little historic place! Wouldn't even know its back here!
Ryan Grawin
Cute narrow street. Very cool that people still live here.
Nate Follmer
Cool little alley. Most homes are still private residences, so be courteous and respectful and don't go looking into the windows or messing with their doors.
Linda and Jim Cooper
Went to the Fete day open house. It was very informative. It's part historical and part interior design. You get to see places the lower and middle classes lived since colonial times and at the same time see what people have done with these small spaces.
Luis C. L.
Great place. Charming. A must if you visit Philly.
Donald C.
Like walking back in time. Worth a visit.
Mary Cantu
It's a small street with parking near by. I would suggest to drive there. But it is definitely worth the stop and stroll.
Mike Ryan
Beautiful old cobblestone alley with a historic feeling, worth the walk.
Mary McQueen
This historic street has the oldest houses in the country, and they are still in use today! It’s a small alley-type street near downtown Philly.
Gavin Saladino
Amazing historical experience. Captured the real feel of the olden days. Brought me back to the colonial days. A must see experience if you like American history.

Go !
Run here and take it all in. It's not a long street (or, ahem - alley), but it's fully worth while.
Whether you love history, traveling, or none of it at all, take a few minutes and a (literally) brief stroll back into history.
Though I'd been to Philadelphia before, I'd never previously visited.
Quaint, historic and quintessentially charming in every sense of the word. Try to block out the hustle and bustle (and many smart devices) around you. You'll feel as if you are stepping in the past.
Sadly the museum house was closed, but it is otherwise open to the public for a donation only. I hope to visit again to tour there.
Jesper Bexkens
Beautiful alley to stroll around.
Saily
Museum was closed when we visited. It's open only during April to October as per the board that was put outside the museum.
K C
Absolutely adorable row of houses kept in their original state and decorated wonderfully for the holidays. A couple of them have been turned into a museum with traditional furnishings.
Nick Cvetkovic
Historic living memorial worth a visit...many improvements in the museum experience
Karine Karpati
Beautiful alley to walk through when visiting old city Philadelphia.
Ted Driver
A very unique look at living in the 18th century. Still occupied today, it is the oldest residential street in the country. Worth a visit to see the house and grounds!

Wonderful

I live in the neighborhood so I walk through here all the time. I love the tiny alley and how cozy it is. Lots of interesting historical things here too. Definitely a good place to check out in the city.
vinaya h
Known as Ancient residential area..it is a small walking street with few houses with colorful doors/windows facing each other.. visited on 23rd Dec, Beautifully decorated with Christmas lights.. i liked it
Kavya Chandrika
Free during the first Friday of every month. One house is open as a museum. We can try our clothes from back in the day and take pictures. Very pleasant and Instagram worthy 👌 …

World Gem, Philly Classic - this spot is tourist HEAVY, so stop by in the early AM or in the late evening. If you do happen to go during the hustle and bustle weekend afternoon, make sure to snag some cookies from the little boy who lives on the corner - they're delicious and he's awesome.
Juan J. Moreno
Amazing street full of original stuff and houses. The most incredible: real people live there permanently.
Alex Haynes
A must see when visiting Philadelphia! A great way to see historic buildings older than our nation for free. Close to many great restaurants and other sights. I would highly recommend checking this landmark out.
Steven Liu
Cute little alley way with well maintained structure and historical value! Highly recommend to check it out during the day with less people!
Andrij Harasewych
Don't miss this quick sidetrack into history. This country's "oldest residential street," it has been preserved to retain at least some of that original look and feel. Elfreth’s Alley Museum is located there as well, and worth seeing if you'd like to get a closer look at the lives of the early Philadelphians.
Cj Wolf
Just an absolutely amazing piece of history saved for others to see, what America looked like a couple of hundred years ago! I wish we had many more saved examples such as this to enjoy!
Eric Sievers
A very cool street. To think that some of our founding fathers probably walked on the same stones. Amazing. And thank you top the residents who did all the restoration.
July Soto
Beautiful historic street in Philly
Jesse Quevedo
Amazing alley, kept as what it seems like natural and very original. Never have visited such an historical location. Very well worth the visit. Its free and a very short walk-through. Did not visit the local store but looks like an interesting lot.
Erik Lepito
The row houses of Philly are a do not miss. Such a unique European feel, a run place to explore if you're into architecture. So many fun designs.
Jeisson Apolo
Very cute and charming. The alley is much smaller in length than I expected. There was a surprisingly small number of tourists here so I guess it's a bit of a hidden treasure. Definitely worth checking out.
Victor Coppola
Our nations oldest residential neighborhood. Quite a walk through living history.
Michael Andrews
Nice little street, not much to see or read about.
LJz Rekt
Lots of history here. Me and my buddy were debating walking down that small alley that looks like it might be someones backyard.... and we did. It's not a backyard, it's part of the alley.
I assume if there were lots of others, we'd see them and not question is... so if you're questioning it, just do it. Try to be respectful though, I saw some people peaking into non-government/gift shop related windows. Like.... c'mon, no.
Cody Branch
Very cool spot if you like old buildings or history. Also if you don't want to pay for parking there is 1 hr free curbside parking across the street from old city park minimum which is a very short walk.
Manuel Colón
What a fun location! There is a story corner on this block as well as a small museum where you can dress in historical clothing. It only accepts cash, so be prepared before.
Simon Little
Historical site proclaimed as the nation's oldest residential street. Cobbled lane with beautiful little cottages feels like a step back in time. Worth the walk.
Shalin Shah
It’s one of the best alley I have ever seen, this is definitely a good place to visit. It shows the glimpses of the oldest residential area, having pretty homes. It’s definitely a good place to walk through. Wonderful.
Anita Winchester
Very cool alley. A member of our tour group noticed that a lady went into her house and left her keys on her door. He knocked, and told her. She thanked him, and invited several of the group in to tour her home!!
Pei-Hsuen Liao
Charming little colonial alley. Worth a stroll if you're in the area and want a slice of Americana.
Faith Allen
Historic, gorgeous architect and pleasant
Csaba Csaki
Oldest residential street in the US well preserved. Was not too crowded when we got there but I can imagine it becoming busy at peak times.
Richard Oxlade
One of the most beautiful little inner city communities I’ve ever seen. Lots of history and gorgeous old architecture. Very similar to Quince Street.
David Watson
Really interesting place to check out, especially for history and architecture needs.
Mr.& Ms. Louis
It was good I learned a lot of history and they keep everything same
Amy Mason
This was so much fun. If you're into history this is a great thing to do. This was the Fete Day event, really interesting and super nice people. Can't wait to go back for the Christmas event.
Eric Anderson
Super cute historic block, it is still residential, but it does have a museum.
Mark Skinner
This was a really nice walk. Lots of antique styling and some really old features here, very nice to see it so well preserved. Beautiful area.
Jesse Gusler
Very neat to visit, homes are in great shape for their age. I've never seen a row of homes so well preserved. For sure worth a quick walk through.
Omer and Anat Gazit
Nice historical place. Very small.
Dominic Allen
It's a nice space. My wife thinks the tight alley reminds her of some tr thing from Harry Potter. We may go back and do a themed shoot.
Marcella Oliveira
Very pretty and well kept street. On the sign it says it is Philadelphia’s oldest residential street. If you are walking around the area, take a pick there. Doesn’t take more than 5-10min to see everything.
JJ Cutuli
Quaint and oft-overlook piece of American and Philadelphian history. Many lifelong city residents don't know about this important strip. Not worth coming down to see on its own, but definitely worth a walk-through next time you're in the area.
Jayne Lim
Quaint little alley. Buildings are mostly privately owned.
Lissette Lau
Besides its historical significance, it's just a street with old architecture homes. It takes 3 minutes to walk it. It's a nice place for a quick picture but nothing else.
Andrew T
It's much smaller than you'd expect. Very short alley. Not all that much description of the houses in the alley. I think they're all houses, so no shops you can go in or anything. Just, a tad underwhelming. If you're walking the area, go and see it, but it's not a 'must see'.
Corey Stradling (JamesonStewart)
I've been going to Philly for one event or another all my life. I never knew this place was here. I stumbled upon it while walking the city playing Ingress.
It was like stepping back in time. It's a lovely place for a stroll. It's worth taking the time to visit if you're doing the American history thing. It's not far from Betsy Ross' house.
Check it out.
Jane Sterner
Very historic neighborhood. Really awesome.
Kiara Hernandez
It was really beautiful! However there is a sign in the alley that says they do tours inside two of the houses but when we went to where they sell the tickets there was no one there. It was locked and we knocked but no one ever answered.
Viriam Mudrahel
Nice place but overcrowded.
KW Tam
A tiny, quiet road that is worth a gander due to its historical significance. Its physical proximity to Old City in Philadelphia (which you are visiting already, right? Right?) makes it an easy must see.
Lisa McMahon
Make sure you listen to the "Once upon a history" story! We ran into a local resident while walking down the alley and he was so kind and friendly to tell me and my family a little bit more about the place :) Picturesque and fun to see!
Rebecca Mendoza
I visited their Fete day a number of years ago and enjoyed myself very much. I watched paper making, I saw bobbin lacemaking, and several other examples of early trades. I also visited the two homes that are open to guests. This was an interesting and enjoyable day.
Alex Sneed Miller
Neat little alley to walk down. Buildings are still used as personal/family homes and date back to 1702. Takes about 5-10 minutes to slowly walk through.
Star
Oldie but goodie in the heart of the city these pictures were from around the corner
Jeffrey Denson
Oldest preserved street scene in the country! So neat.
Robert Tkachick
Went for a special exhibit of art by a friend. Very nice venue.
Brian Chv
Really cool Historic block in Philly, not to far from there is a wood art museum which is beautiful, as well as the magic garden art museum, lots to do
Stephen Cho
You can see the traditional houses of Philly. Because there are people inhabited at present, tour or viewing hours are specified. It is crowded with many people and is a beautiful place to take pictures.
Emre Yalçin
A crack in time and space. While walking through insignificant alleys, highway walls and gigantic development sites, you suddenly step into a very modest working-class neighborhood from early nineteenth century. Thanks to its inhabitants who are keeping it as is in the middle of busy districts.
Omar Soujae
I like it because of the market called little waitrose
Megan Wilcox
Great alley to visit while in Philly. Lots of great old time culture in this area. It is more of a walk through though, unless you visit the museum.
Chelsea Christensen
Very cool little alley in the heart of Philadelphia. The cobblestone street is incredibly charming and worth a stroll down if you're in the area. Very picturesque!
Robert Benjamin Moore
Great place to visit... It has a wonderful History... Me and my friend toured the homes and took some amazing photos. Great for locals and tourists.
Frederick Wright
One of Philly's most enduring tourist draws, this charming little street is rather similar to Boston's famous Acorn St in Beacon Hill. Narrow cobblestone road, apparently the oldest residential street in the US. Meticulously maintained and so clean it could be a movie set.
Sirena Wurth
Quaint and beautiful residential street. Was fortunate to be there before thanksgiving and many homes were decorated for fall. If you’re in the area definitely take a stroll.
Jodi Lawsky
Small, but interesting and definitely worth a visit.
Érico Loyola
A small but very interesting street, with good examples of the houses from the XVIII century. It's worthy seeing it, though a little apart from the Independence Hall.
