We loved our tour guide, Tom, who was a fast-talking joker and full of stories and fun facts. He showed us the house, grounds and herbarium and brought them all to life.
It would be helpful if there were a shuttle from Burlington. The first time we tried to visit, we missed the city bus, which runs hourly. The second time, we made the bus, and we enjoyed the half-hour walk through neighborhoods and woods, but not everyone would be up for that. Transportation for those without cars would be most welcome.

Informative and animated tour brought Ethan Allen to life. Guide very knowledgeable on botany as well as history. Historical dwelling is small and simple but adds realism to the representation of EA’s life.

I love reading about Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys, and so when I scheduled my flight to Burlington for my trip to Norwich University's Graduation Residency week, I knew I had to find some way to stop by and see the home of Ethan Allen. Unfortunately though, I only had a very small window of time in which I could see the house. A few weeks before I arrived, I emailed the museum staff to see if there was any possibility of viewing the house after the normally scheduled tours since my flight wouldn't land until about the time the last tour started. Angie Grove, the Executive Director, emailed me back and graciously set up a time for me to have a private tour of the home. John, the volunteer tour guide, was very friendly and knowledgeable. Phyllis in the gift shop was also fantastic. My hats off to all of the staff and volunteers at the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum for their excellent work in preserving an important piece of our nation's history. I only wish I would have had more time to spend on the property! Thank you again for your graciousness and hospitality and I wish you continued success!

Due in large part to the very charming and knowledgeable tour guide, this small historical site far surpassed my expectations. What I loved is how the guide traced Ethan Allen’s personal experience back to the founding of the state of Vermont. Being from New York, I admit knowing very little about the 14 State in the nation. However, I came away from this tour filled with many facts and details that are still with me hours later. A perfect family-friendly experience. Very COVID safe, too.

This was a fun activity. It would be great for a family or even an independent activity. We enjoyed learning about the history of Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys. Our tour guide, Keith, was incredibly knowledgeable. The grounds were absolutely beautiful and picturesquein summer, as they would be any time of year. Highly recommended! We spent a little over an hour there and it is very close to everything in Burlington.

Small, volunteer run homestead and interesting film about Vermont history and Ethan Allen. Tour of house was low key with a knowledgeable docent. Rainy day so weren't able to explore grounds but seemed lovely. Learned a lot here.

An interesting historical landmark.
As a tourist destination, you could definitely do worse if you're interested in the colonial history of New England. The facility is nice, the staff is helpful, and there is an informative multimedia presentation at the end, as well as a gift shop area which sells neat little trinkets and books on Ethan Allen and the 1700's era.
The only downside is that, while the house is interesting - Ethan Allen didn't really live in it for too long a time. Maybe two years at most. And most of the interior is just reproduction items and not anything Ethan Allen actually owned.
Still, the grounds are beautiful, and there is lots of information available at the location to make the trip worth it.

10$ for a tour of an old rustic country house and some commentary about flax cultivation. Not worth the money in my opinion. I learned a little about the history of Vermont, including the short existence of it's independent republic, and the capture of Fort Tyconderoga..

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Ages 38, 13 and 7. The old homestead was filled with interesting items and our tour guide, John, was knowledgeable and personable without being “too much”. My oldest child enjoyed the short film, while my youngest enjoyed dressing up in period clothing. The land is beautiful and peaceful, despite being right near a busy part of Burlington. I highly recommend visiting this special place with any age friends or family.

I was there for a private birthday party. Seems like you can really feel free to create your own setting and vibe! It was dreamy and expansive.

Learned a bunch in the 15 minute movie prior to the home tour. Home tour was okay. The short movie taught us a lot about Ethan Allen and Vermont.

Nice place for a walk or a ride 👍 …

It was a interesting experience to learn about Ethan Allen and the native Americans. If you're interested in local Vermont history definitely check this place out. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. Tours and plenty to check out. This is a good activity for 1-2 hrs.

Nicole is amazing, her knowledge and passion are fun to listen to. great tour!

It is a pretty basic museum about Ethan Allen. They bring in special topic presentations that are usually interesting. It's worth at least one visit. The photo here was an Abenaki encampment and Seeds of Renewal presentation that my husband had started years ago with the Intervale in Burlington.
Donna Eckrich
Very informative . Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and interesting. Would definitely recommend this

Good tour, and walking routes nearby. Tom was an engaging tour guide

Visiting relatives in Burlington, I decided to go for a walk to check out this museum. When I arrived, Tom, the tour guide, was alone on duty and about to close the visitor center in order to lead a tour of the homestead and grounds. Although I hadn't planned to take the tour, I went for it and really enjoyed the backstory of Ethan Allen and his family. The commentary was lively and very interesting, mainly because it incorporated details of Ethan Allen the man and not just a recitation of his historical accomplishments. Another guide, John, I think, [his mother was from Passaic NJ] came and took over for Tom and was just as engaging in his description of life with the Allens and his descendants. There is plenty of Vermont history to scope out, but this spot is as great a place to start as anywhere else. Lovely walking paths and bike trails surround the homestead, and it's pretty close to downtown Burlington.

The guide (I missed his name) was fun and the tour was educational. After the tour, the grounds are open for exploration. Theres a gift shop with several local VT authors' books for sale among other things. Highly recommend visiting if you've got a couple hours to kill.

History is my thing so this was awesome. Very friendly and knowledgeable people

An excellent tour, as well as an informative little site museum that gave good historical context. The location on the Winooski River is very attractive. The house itself is bare-bones and a bit small (nothing to be done about that). It would have been nice to see a bit more of the experimental archeology that evidently goes on at the site: visitors would love to see (even participate) in some of that. The signage getting in to the site also left something to be desired.

We had a knowledgeable and engaging guide and learned about the interesting history of the farm where Ethan Allen came after the events of the Revolution.

Great guides! Beautiful setting, wonderful site.
Emily Simpson
Wonderful tour of the home and grounds. We were the only two people on the tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and very sweet. At the end we got to keep a bouquet of flowers from the garden! Loved the experience!
Allie Geilich Parker
We had a wonderful time in this tour yesterday! Our guide was knowledgeable, funny, and engaging. Interesting little bit of history to explore.
Allen Blow
Really nice place for an outing if you are in the area. The director, Angie, gave us a tour of the homestead, which was quite good.
Jay Files
Tour was awesome Tom did a hell of a job like a history lesson 🙂
Lee Stewart
Tours of the house are guided. Volunteers speak about the house and some of the experiences living at the time. The house needs a lot of restoration work. Can't touch anything! The museum on- site is very nice and informative. Plan on spending twice as much in museum versus the house itself.

A wonderful gem of Burlington. Enjoy the history, a picnic, a walk, a run, a bike ride, bbq, garden, hang, swim in the river, forage.....this is one of those place I love about Burlington.
One of the most fascinating things is too, learn about the black snake affair where locals were smuggling goods up to Canada using the Winooski River and were caught and had a shootout with authorities and ended up with a hanging in Burlington right downtown. #history

I had some time to kill between when I arrived and the rest of my party arrived at the Burlington, VT airport. I looked for something local to do. The Ethan Allen Homestead was only 20 minutes from the airport.
This tour was one of the best tours that I had been on in a while. My tour guide - Bob - sat me down inside the theater/remake of a tavern in the visitor center. He gave me about 25 minutes worth of history on Ethan Allen. It was really detailed. I'm a history major and I was impressed.
Then he took me over to the Ethan Allen Homestead and proceeded to go through each of the rooms and describe the items found there and how they were used during Allen's time. The building and the grounds were in impeccable shape. Bob was very knowledgeable and answered questions thoroughly.
A great family outing. Nice gift shop and artifacts to view.
Timothy Nash
Very informative tour, very friendly staff. If the weather had been better we could have explored the available walks.

John as a tour guide, is a wealth of knowledge and a great conversation. His depth on Ethan Allen and Vermont stimulated us and is a significant highlight of our visit to the Vermont.
Jessica Ibey
Tour guide was friendly knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
Robert Glay
Learn alot about Ethan Allen and his place in history.
Leah R
The Homestead is beautiful, the historic areas well maintained and the history of the Homestead and its sites are clearly explained by the docents. You may also catch some of the living historians (reenactors) dressed in period garb demonstrating their skills. Last but not least, every single person met was knowledgeable, welcoming and friendly.
Lauren NJ
My boyfriend had made plans for us to tour the Ethan Allen Homestead during our stay in Burlington. I went in with little to no expectation and left pleasantly surprised. It turned out being my favorite tour we did. Keith, our tour guide, made the trip and experience worth it. He brought the history of Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys to life and his enthusiasm was contagious. Much appreciated. Highly recommend!
CAROL BLOW
Closed when we went. We were bike riding threw the trails. Really cool. Interesting blogs. Imagine living there back in those days
Nicholas Ceffalo
Great area with some basic, but nice, walking trails that follow the river bed. There's a community garden, large feilds, and of course the homestead. Dogs are welcome on leash. There is no charge to wonder the grounds.
Chris Bailey
Lovely park right outside downtown Burlington. Guess are knowledgeable, no crowds to soak of. Grounds are extensive, trails bisect the park so you can walk to the river or other points of interest.
Carl Thornton
This historic site offers a view into the day to day life of revolutionary war leader and hero Eathan Allen. One can learn about his war time experiences and the making of our nation's 14th state.
I found that walking the grounds, neatly maintained and thoughtfully restored, brought me closer to a figure of whom I had only known through reading. Highly recommended for Revolutionary War history enthusiasts.
The site can be rented for moderate sized events.
Mike Gibbons

I wish I would have discovered the excellent programming that occurs at Ethan Allen Homestead before I retired last year. However, having said that, I sure am glad that, quite by accident, I read about a lecture occurring there on a Sunday afternoon in my local newspaper, the Colchester Sun. Recently, Ethan Allen Homestead hosted Christopher Wren, a former New York times editor and journalist, who talked about his book on Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys. Not long after that a series started describing the history of the Abenaki people in the region; it continues, one day a month, for four months. Yesterday, we listened as a professor from the University of Vermont talked about his books on the travails of slaves taken to the Maritime provinces by the Loyalists who fled our country immediately after the revolutionary war. Go to their website and you can find out how to get on their mailing list and you'll receive email notifications about what the next lectures are going to be about and you can also look at their calendar of events. Sadly, I have to admit I've never actually toured the homestead. I've only gone into the lecture hall in the store. This summer when the homestead is open again to the public I'll be sure to tour the homestead itself.

Docent was well versed in history of the area. Short film well done. Very good and informative displays
Rachel Alberico
We unfortunately came when much of the walking trails were flooded, but still enjoyed our time and learned a little more about Vermont's past. Next time I'm sure we'll get a little more out of the trails here.
Jeremy Hamm

We arrived after it was closed for the season however the director was on the premises and gave us a tour anyway. I learned more about American history during our visit than in any class I ever took.
Todd Clark
Interesting but not for kids. It's a tour with long explanations of every thing. Tour guide was clearly irritated that my kids were there.
