Reviews of Southern Museum of Flight
Emily Weaver
It was a great little museum packed full of history, aircrafts, and aircraft parts. My boys absolutely loved it, especially sitting in the cockpits. We would have loved to do the flight simulators, but there were about 5 busses worth of students doing them. The field of aircrafts down the road is a bit sad...kind of like a plane graveyard. The gift shop isn't great either. The museum itself was fascinating, and at only $5 a person, completely worth the time.
Miguel Patiño
A small museum dedicated to the aviation. It is has wonderful replicas of legendary planes, as the Wright bothers or Spirit of San Louis, an real pieces. Also an extensive objects collection related to the aviation.
Jody Harrison
This is an awesome museum! These folks have done a great job on their exhibits. My favorite is the Vietnam scene with the Cobra and the Little Bird. My only wish is it was bigger.
Something really cool is they have some cockpit trainers you can get it and it gives you a great feel if what it is like. We are definitely adding this to our regular quarterly stop along with the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville.

A really fun place to visit. Exhibits were well thought out and interactive. A must see it you live here or are visiting. Amazing staff. Family friendly.
Tanner Godfrey
We had a great time taking our family to the flight museum! Our young kids loved it. Pricing was reasonable, and parking a breeze. The exhibits were really fun and informative. There’s plenty to do and see; enough to keep you busy for several hours. The surrounding neighborhood is a bit rundown and some of the exhibits were closed or not clearly labeled; nothing that’s a deal breaker though. There’s a fun gift shop at the end. I would recommend it to others!
Warren Edwards
I picked up a group on and decided to visit this place on a whim. This was definitely the smallest aviation museum I have ever visited; however, I was extremely impressed. Even after visiting the Smithsonian this museum had a lot of value. The main part of the museum was divided into recent and older aviation displays. The highlight of my trip was seeing a Navy Blue Angel demonstration airplane and my favorite jet the A-7.
They also had a small section down the street with maybe 12 airplanes to include the SR - 71 Blackbird spyplane. My kids enjoyed the freeze dried icecream sold in the gift shop. Definately worth the visit if you are in the area!
Kevin Ashurst
Made for an entertaining quick stop in Birmingham. Cool collection of aircraft.
Barnacle Bill
In all my time in Bham, I finally made it to the museum. Upon entering… Museum staff “Ballard” was both courteous & helpful, explaining the tour route & outside exhibits. At first glance it appears overall quite small but don’t let it fool you. Before departing, I learned a few more things about aviation. I was personally quite impressed with the museum’s interest in CIA involved exhibits (I honestly wasn’t expecting this). They did a very nice job with the Vietnam War exhibits and Lake Murray B-25 restoration. I also learned more about the Tuskegee Airmen and their struggle to find their better place in aviation.
Much of the museum had exhibits still under construction. I’m sensing a lack of funds. In one glassed-in exhibit, I noticed a bug flying about & dead bugs around.
Possibly more museum fundraisers are needed to finish current projects under construction.
I would recommend you stopping by to check out this museum. Admission was only $5 for adults! 👍
Heidi Flitton
Affordable museum with great displays. It was a nice stop on our way though town.
Ed Fields
This museum is a hidden gem, located squarely in Birmingham's East Lake neighborhood. It is chock full of experiential education, cultural interpretation, and meeting space. They even have a cool retail shop!
Bridgette Hayes
Nice small flight museum for a fun family activity. Reasonably priced and the perfect place to stop for a little bit to stretch our legs. They had some areas they were restoring/working on but still had enough neat stuff to look at and read. They have a few items outside the museum and more down the street in a fenced in yard. You couldn't get closed to fenced equipment and they looked a little weathered but overall a very good place to stop. It is not in a super nice part of town but felt safe during our visit.
Robby Myrick
Super nostalgic tour of historic aircraft and the stories behind them. The staff are super friendly and Mr Paul was the best Tour Guide! Perfect for family outings and school field day.
Givon Wayne Gilliam
This is a very nice Museum. they are continually updating the exhibits and everything is clean and interesting. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Reggie Blanchard
Very nice place to visit. You can learn a lot here. Me and my wife really enjoyed this museum and we took lots of pictures. Enjoy!
Anna Owens
Great facility with so many wonderful exhibits. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful and the museum is very clean. We took our 2.5 year old who really enjoyed checking out the planes and playing in the children's area. Highly recommend.
Elisabeth Gross
Our first thought was that it was a bit small, but wow they fit a lot in there. They have a vast collection and staff that is friendly and knowledgeable. The kids were excited that they even got to go in a couple!
We had a great time checking out the plains and exhibits at the museum of flight. But what made our trip amazing was Charlie, he came around and showed the kids the planes and gave them the history and stories of them all. What a great way to spend our afternoon. Thank you Charlie!
Evette Taylor Brown
Great place, with visual history importance. Has a neat little kiddie play area. Loved going through time. There is also an off site, outdoor area that house a lot of old planes.
Alex Demas
A fun little aviation museum with some fantastic planes, but curation could be a bit better.
I came here when I was in grade school, and it was this small little museum in the corner of a hanger. Now, several decades later, it’s a proper museum with great exhibits.
They’ve got a general history of aviation wing and a military history wing, and both are really well done. They even have one of the original Delta Air Lines crop dusters (did you know Delta got started as a crop dusting service that carried the odd passenger for extra revenue? I didn’t!) They even have a SR-71 blackbird in a nearby exhibit you can drive past.
The frustrating part was because they had neat things, when there wasn’t much information on the plane or why it was there, it was disappointing. I wanted to learn more! I think they’re in the process of updating things, so hopefully that’ll be better next time I come by.
Kris Kasprzak
Very cool air museum. Lots of interesting aircraft engines in history. I highly recommend going there
Stephanie Sword
It was actually closed the day we went with no explanation as to why, but I gave it all the stars because we had so much fun driving around the airport and seeing all the old planes and enjoyed reading about the crafts on the placards
Jeff king
Great place to view aviation and military items
Adriano Robazza
Small, but very nice Aircraft Museum!
Ben
Charlie Phillips, who is in charge of education at the museum, is amazing. I'd highly suggest you seek him out.
If you buy a membership to this museum, you can get into the Huntsville space center for free. This was a cool 1.5 hours spend showing my kids the history of flight. They loved the flight simulators and they hands-on exhibits. They represented the history of African-American aviation well and the history of females involvement, too.
Kristi Griffin
Fun place to go, good educational experience. Some of the areas didn't look like much care had gone into them, gift shop was lacking.
Octavia Boldin
This is military museum across the street from where I live. It has some very interesting exhibits. Check it out for yourself you'll be delighted.
Sandra Thompson
The museum had all sorts of planes from the very first to some of the latest. There were also several old cars and helicopters. The building was roomy and comfortable temperature wise. There were several associates working on the exhibits that explained some of the things they were doing with the planes. There were also display cases with various items about planes and aircraft carrier. Also displays about pilots and the stories about them. The Vietnam era helicopter display was very interesting because it was the war going on during my high school days. They had a Blue Angel and Thunderbird jet outside. When the bus was leaving we also passed more planes fenced in and signed but not accessible. This is an excellent place to take kids and very inexpensive,
Jayanti Vedi
It's THE place for those who love to get closer to the history and modern era of "flying".
Hugh Two
Very cool artifacts. I've never seen the SR-71 piggy back drone before.
sean williamson
This place has some amazing items.
Steven Edwards
This is one of the smaller aviation museums I've been to but they are packed full of displays. Lots of good information on the Tuskegee Airmen and a couple of hands-on areas for younger visitors. The entrance is dead center of the museum and you can enter from either the 73rd or 74th parking lot with the museum divided into two sections on either side of the entrance.
Patrick Rincher
We celebrated my parents 50th wedding anniversary here! It was my first time visiting! We all enjoyed it! Charley or Charles ( I hope I remembered his name correctly) our Tour guide was awesome!!!!
Kelsey McBride
A bit boring and not very kid oriented, bud free for military so worth killing an hour before a flight.
Danny Niblett
Very friendly staff and very informative. I love the exhibits. Tons of history to be learned.
R RGC
I truly enjoyed the time I spent at the southern museum of flight. It is a hidden gem of Birmingham Alabama!.
Erin Walton
Great selection of planes! A lot of history is incorporated in the displays. The museum offers evolution of plane models, military planes, plane engines, naval ship models, and various other artifacts.
Paul Herman
Unexpected gem in Birmingham, outstanding exhibit of planes and history. Entry fee was cheap and spent about 2 hours there. If your in the area check it out!
Coty Ikner
Great experience, wonderful place to come visit and have social events.
Bryan Carter
The museum is excellent, however, it’s location is quite deceiving. Located in the middle of a neighborhood, this museum has a lot to offer. Do not be discouraged about its location, give it a try!
Shea
Was looking for something to do on a rainy day, with my 16 year old son, while visiting my hometown. I found this place on google maps using the search "fun things to do near me" keywords. We had a wonderful time. The set up from military, wars, to general aviation was very well done. We were impressed. I would suggest this place to anyone of all ages and even if you don't have ties to the military (such as active duty or family in military) They have detailed descriptions of each plane or helo.
They also have a few sims that you can sit in and fly. I got stuck in one and my son kept saying "come on mom, let's go see something else!" I was having fun. The staff was helpful and very friendly.
My son is in Rotc and he said he had a good time. So I would go on his having a good time as a good recommendation by itself.
Check out their website for the camps they have and field trips for schools. They looked worth it as well.
Veronica Ford
Visited this place with my friend and we really enjoyed it.
Michael Robertson
This museum it OUTSTANDING. Everything you could want, great stuff for kids, great exhibits for history buff, great selection of interesting planes for aviation geeks. I honestly enjoyed this more than the Smithsonian air and space (under renovations) that we visited last month.
Mark Francis D'Monte
Small but nice place for kids to learn about airviation.
Cecilia Casiano
It's good place and not too big in the building and neat
In the break room as snack please fix or buy a new vendor machine since we can't drink water fountains every where in that building
Ian Strait
Not a very big collection with sections under construction. Bunch of the aircraft outside in fenced area.
Dave Mosley
Very nice aviation museum. Been awhile since last visit. Excited about future expansion.
Jyotika Khatri
Nice collection
Don't forget to see outdoor in next block.
Dee Kurtzer
Interesting small museum with many planes and models, old thanks, cars, and good historical photos and facts.
Cortexs Drake
Really enjoyed it nice experience Museum of flights👍 …
Ashley Frederick
Went to the SMOF today, and this place is packed with historical information! Unfortunately, the kids section is closed off, but my three year old enjoyed it regardless. Well worth the price and it seems like they are constantly making changes to make changes as many areas were under construction. (This was not an issue at all!)
Can’t wait to go back when the kid section opens up!
Ouida Brackett
We decided to take a little trip to the museum on a whim. My hubby two kids and I thoroughly enjoyed this place. It was very informative and the displays were very well kept. My son loved all the cool planes and choppers. He was in heaven! We loved the videos and information that was attached to the artifacts. Very nice experience
Bham Onion
Great place to go and experience the world of flight with yourself or family.
A hidden jewel in the city, do yourself a favor and make it a point to visit or revisit this great museum.
Joey Lodico
Great place very reasonable 👍 …
Dr. Zapata
A nice collection of airplanes. Worth the visit.
Billie McShane
I loved seeing all these old planes. It was so full of history and the tour was really interesting. I was referred due to Tuskegee display but it was a little small.
Brandon Grigg
Great exhibits, some of the staff is very pleasant and have a great deal of knowledge about the items they have. The day I went there was some sort of event for what appeared to be a staff member and I felt a bit like I was just in everyone's way. Other than that it was a great place to visit. The exterior of the building and adjacent neighborhoods seem a little rough but if you are a fan of aviation it is a great place to visit.
Lori Jasper
My grandfather used to bring me there as a little girl. I hadn't been since then but we had a blast at Membership Day with my girls. Great event and great museum. We will be back. It also looks like a great event venue so I'll have to check it out for that too!
Edna Firzlaff
It was a wonderful visit. Especially hearing the knowledge from Charlie. The last time I was at the museum was when our children were in their teens. They are both now in their late 40's. It was amazing to see how much history that was there and how large it is. Heard you are moving soon and will look forward to going there to see everything at your new location.
Jennifer Huckaba
Got kids that love planes? This is a nice place to let them explore. There are several simulators and a play area. Mine loved this and I wish we had decided to visit this off the beaten path sooner. This was well worth the fee. Stop in and say hello to the sweet staff and support this wonderful place.
Me T
I thoroughly enjoyed it. Informative sections about aviation history, it's pilots. The greatest thing about this place is they had a Russian built attack helicopter.
Will C
Went here as a kid it was awesome to see all of the airplanes and go in side of them. Great place for little kids. Great place for people fascinated with aviation. There is a lot of history here. There are almost 100 different aircrafts here. But they also have things liable engines, models, artifacts, and pictures.
Life Is Brewtiful
Very educational and tons of fun for me, my wife, and my son. He is obsessed with planes and he loved to sit in the seats of of some airplanes and helicopters. They had flight simulators that were really fun for the adults and so much cool exhibits ranging from the beginning of mechanical aviation to modern day. I was really impressed with the massive Russian attack helicopter and the interactive exhibits. Also it was free for military (or maybe discounted I can't remember). Either way, it was so fun and I loved it. Great time and lots to see!
Renee Davidson
Very informative piece of history from great pioneer women and men who paved the way for major airline innovations over the years! Beautiful "real-time feel" exhibits and simulations. I went many times as a child but much better when time is spent learning as an adult!
Melinda De La Cruz
Southern Museum of Flight is certainly worth a visit. Their remarkable collection is well displayed, with good descriptions. We conducted our own tour, and spent a couple of hours here. Staff is friendly and helpful. 8 year old grandson got to try out a flight simulator. We will visit again.
J Denholm
My son loves this place. He is 3. The bathrooms could use some attention, but they are functional. They have a great play area for 3-6 year olds. It needs a good scrub, but has lots of fun stuff. You can host a decent birthday party. Kids 7+ can use the flight simulators. The gift shop has affordable items. A must visit for local families and visiting families.
Jessica Jenkins
Lots of planes and flight suits! Very friendly and open to explore! Only downside is you have to drive 2 blocks down to see several of their aircraft displayed.
Nikki Guthrie
This is one of Birmingham's hidden gems...we took our 4 year old son today and he loved it! Lots of cool historical planes to look at and all for a very good price. Flight simulators and a play area for kids too. I'm not even all that into planes myself but we all enjoyed the visit and will likely return at some point with our son. (one of the pictures shown here is of my son giving his thumbs up in approval lol) RECOMMENDED!!
Barry H
Lots off history here & focused on Birmingham. Staff really knows their stuff. Well worth a visit, especially if you're into planes.
Bigdog Flying
I've always wanted to visit and finally had the time. Do yourself a favor and take the guided tour. My family and friends learned so much.
D A
I took my grandkids here over the holidays. They absolutely loved seeing the planes, interacting with the staff. Tosha was extremely gracious when we arrived. Charlie Phillips took the time to show my grandkids how to operate the simulators. Great displays. Extremely clean and well organized. Excellent facility and well run.
The sisters Mallory and Amelia
Great place! Awesome aircraft to look at! The place is kept clean and very well maintained and updated. They also have a room set up as a play area for kids! My children were very entertained!
Ryan Herrin
What a cool surprise. My 9 y.o. son and I had some time to kill in that neighborhood and really enjoyed our time. The cost is reasonable and if you're like me and do not know anything about planes you will still have a good time.
Mitch Moss
This place is 50 years old. I've lived in Birmingham for 45 years and this is my first visit. Too bad, this place is worth visiting. There are lots of interesting exhibits and the cost of entry is pretty cheap. It is well worth visiting if you are an aviation enthusiast. The only downside is that it is in a bit of a sketchy party of town.
Kathleen Henderson
Who knew this museum even existed? I had just enough time to kill while waiting to board a flight out to venture around the corner. It was a nice surprise to see. The staff at the museum were quite welcoming and helpful. There's even a little gift shop in the museum to mark your experience!
Susan Sabia
We went here for a wedding and it was amazing. The history was so informative. We are coming back again to see the rest of the museum with our grandchildren. It is a must see for anyone to appreciate our military and how far we've come.
Nathan Boye
It a nice smaller air museum with very friendly staff. Quite an interesting SR71 exhibit and commercial plane exhibit. Not a normal feature in these type of museums. All in all I enjoyed my time. Also very affordable and free parking.
Joshua Edwards
Excellent history here! A lot of work has gone into reconstructing the past. Very much enjoyed the Russian helicopter in the right wing of the museum, and it's magnificent cold war past. Worth a visit at any age. Kids are free.
Railfan Kaleb
Staff is really friendly and it's a small yet amazing museum if you're taking a road trip or just want to do something for the weekend!
Joanne Hoffmann
Small but filled with enough to impress even finicky teenagers. Very nice place loved the exhibits. Staff was very friendly, place is well kept. We enjoyed our visit very much.
Chuck
I am a pilot and this is a gem in the area without a doubt. I never been to a greater aviation museum that allows the visitor to be so close to the static displays. I thoroughly enjoyed sitting inside several cockpits as well. Although the area may seem run down, the museum is extremely personal and up close. After the visit, I highly recommend driving by the airport because there are additional static displays of both civil and military aircraft including an SR71!!
They were nice enough to allow me to have lunch with them and all the volunteers during my visit. They are like a family. This was also around Christmas time as well. I had the honor of meeting several retired and active pilots including the b-29 pilot of the CAF FIFI.
Andrew Bauer
$7 to enter, some interesting displays. From a replica of the Wright brothers' plane, to amateur built kit planes, to war planes of just about every era (up to the 80's). Lots of engines too. They also have a kids area and some flight simulators that I didn't really check out.
Valerie Reynolds
I took my 3 year old plane loving granddaughter to the museum. We were there 2.5 hours. She was in plane heaven. She could climb into a trainer and on another plane, move the rudder. The play area's "tower" was such a hit, I took to see a real one. Her favorite was the Russian "shark" helicopter.
We will go again.
Brad Moffett
Excellent and very well maintained aviation museum. We live outside Washington DC and are very familiar with the two Smithsonian Air and Space museums and as a former Air Force aviator, we have been to the Air Force museum in Dayton. While these constitute the upper echelon of aviation museum, this one certainly belongs in the next level and should be a destination for any aviation enthusiast. We visited with our family that includes multiple current Air Force pilots and found that active military and their families are free. We were there several hours and still didn't have time to tour the outside aircraft. Multiple well maintained flight simulators were free. There collection of intelligence aviation art and the stories associated with those missions is the best I have seen anywhere. The same applies to their collection of kit built aircraft. Haven't seen an equivalent collection in the more than 20 aviation museums I have visited. Definitely add this to your must see list for Birmingham.
Justin Missanelli
So much unknown history is available there that it's worth the trip alone to learn the history. Nice historical memorabilia on display and the historical aircraft outside and down the street make the visit worth your money
Jameka “JayEssTee” Thomas
Great place to visit or have an event.
John Phillipson
Great piece of historical background. Nicely laid out. Interesting for all ages including groups.
Lennie Roland
Nice small museum. Family friendly. Cost was very reasonable.
Richard Tasker
Very interesting museum. Lots of aircraft but most can be seen only from a distance. The museum where you can see things is very good. In a sketchy part of town but they are planning on moving to a larger facility within the next five years.
The Alan Guy
Not the biggest or best, but a VERY good, small museum that they've put a lot of work into and is definitely worth a stop. Absolutely GREAT museum for smaller children (the play room looked super cool), a few cockpits to climb in, even little computer simulators to fly (very well done and easy enough to figure out). This place needs a large donor to hook them up with a MUCH larger building to fulfill dreams you can see that they want to fulfill. They really have a lot packed into this place.
Wish it had more Alabama-specific flight history in terms of maps, pics, dioramas, but they've covered the basics pretty well.
Wish you could get up close to or into the Hind!
For people new to or passing through Alabama:
Don't miss the Space and Rocket center in Huntsville, the small but vivid Tuskegee Airmen museum at Moton Field, Tuskegee, the Army Aviation Museum at Fort Rucker (plan time to get a base pass at the Daleville gate), and the USS Alabama Battleship museum in Mobile.
lyshanda harbin
Had such a great day with my family. I did not expect it to have as much as it did.
Washington Style1
About two months ago, I accompanied my son to this museum. His school, Gardendale Elementary school, was on a field trip. This place is one of many gems in Alabama. Being that I'm not a native, it was very exciting for me & my son to discover the rich history that Alabama has contributed to our nation.
Cameron Shea
Great flight museum for the South. Some interesting aircraft, including the Lake Murray B-25, Rutans, Blackbird and Drone, and plenty more. Not huge, and not too expensive. Really nice staff. Volunteer with them!
Beatriz Puche
The museum is small but very interesting. The display of the aircrafts is beautiful and instructing, plus you can sit inside a couple of cockpits which is amazing for the kids.
John Risso
This was a cool museum with lots of great history. It looks small from the outside, and while it's not a huge place, it feels much larger on the inside. They have a ton of planes and memorabilia. Lots to learn for kids, adults, and families.
Louis Greer
Nice display. Fair price. But simulator not available at this time due to COVID-19. Does change the experience .
Octavia Webster
Purchased tickets on Groupon. Good price. Sad that kids area not open. Would have loved to have something my 3 yr olds could actually touch
Tim F
It’s not the Smithsonian, but it’s a well-curated, thoughtful, and fun museum with super friendly staff! There’s something for every age group. Great job highlighting local contributions to aviation history.
Kellee Wilkerson
USS Alabama ❤️🇺🇸⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ …

This is a great little museum for Birmingham. The design and style is a bit outdated, but they are building a new facility. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the museum is kid friendly.
Brian Sullivan
Great facility. Friendly staff. Affordable prices. My whole family enjoyed this place. Everyone will find something to enjoy. A fun 2-3 hour event.

Great place to learn about Aviation. Lots of free space for the kids to run around but more importantly learn. The people are friendly, the facility is clean, and it's a real Adventure.

Wonderful museum! Brings aviation history to life! Wright Bros., Lindbergh, Tuskegee Airmen, Korea, Vietnam, Women in Aviation, Flight Camps, Scouts, Parties and Events and more! Super-friendly staff!

The place is interesting but I think a more interactive experience is needed. Recommend to plan at least 2 hours to enjoy the different exhibits.
Jamshed Arslan
Wonderful place, friendly tour guides.
Zachary McNair
Always a wonderful experience here!
Haley Nail
The tour guide was great!!
Dedric Griffin
The history of the building itself is enough to say WOW! There is alot of history there to teach the generations on the history of flight and aerodynamics and they have a flight simulator to teach and show visitors how to fly...
Ralph Damsgard
Really nice collection of aircraft and pieces, only wish would be able to walk up to the other aircraft that are behind the fence currently.
Jeremy Aughenbaugh
They have a piece of the Berlin Wall. This place is epic.
Gene Boshell
Really cool little museum. Some many full-sized craft and some actual historic pieces.
Be sure to ask directions to the off-site collection just around the corner from the main complex.
Steven Antselevich
Good little museum. If you like older planes , ww2 and some local history good place to visit.
Grant Fraker
Pretty good value for $5. When we were there about 1/3 of the exhibits were "under construction"
gmwillys
Good museum. Very well done.
Nathan Oldacre
Lots of interesting planes and helicopters. Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame is also here. They are currently in a pretty sketchy neighborhood, but will be moving near Barber Motorsports Park.
Brandon Jaunarajs
Good museum for the price. Cool old planes and helicopters
