Reviews of Anchorage Museum
Jemi Puno
This is great museum to explore alone! I spent two hours here and appreciated the local artwork, culture and history that was definitely unique to Alaska! It's also a warm place to escape the cold winter temperatures outside. The museum also gives discounts for seniors, military and students. They also have First Fridays with free entry from 6-9pm and also $5 entry every 3rd Thursday of the month. You can definitely see all the exhibits within 3 hours and I would come back if they have any new exhibitions that are interesting.

We went during the first Friday of the month which is free! A great idea for an evening out or just a date night and grab some dinner downtown as well. I loved the exhibits & I absolutely fell in love with all the history that the museum show cased of Alaskan Native history (I learned about it during school but it was way different and such an experience to see actual artifacts & listen and read stories.) This was my first time going and I will most certainly be coming back. I think the discovery area for kids was amazing and also fun for adults too. Must see if you’re ever in Anchorage!

A true gem in the heart of Alaska’s largest city. I unexpectedly got in for free with my Bank of America credit card as cardholders gain free access on the first weekend of each month through the “Museums On Us” program. Bring a quarter to use their lockers to keep all your layers and snacks. If you want to experience the entire museum you’ll need 4-5 hours. Great temporary exhibits that complement their permanent collection right now. Great day inside on a very cold, windy winter day
Allison Wright
Really great museum! The discovery area for kids was amazing! We could have spent half the day in that area alone. The second floor exhibit with items from the different tribes was very well done. My only complaint is that we bought planetarium tickets at the entrance and were told the show was about Alaska animals and the problems from climate change... The show was actually about the Aurora Borealis. Great show and not what we thought it would be about.

Highly recommend coming to the Anchorage Museum. This was a very informative and educational museum that appealed to all ages and learning styles. There were a lot of people there, but the museum is so large and spacious that you never felt crowded. There was so much to see that was never a wait to see any particular exhibit or art piece. The museum is very clean and well taken care of, but didn't feel too formal.
There's 4 floor and many distinct areas that cover everything from the early history of Alaska, but also the current state, and what to look forward to in the future. It also covered all aspects of life from cultural, social, economic, and political. There was a nice hands-on area for children that allowed for them to learn through experience and fun. I enjoyed the exhibits where they highlighted many of the local artists.
I felt I walked through at an average pace by spending time in every area and I was there for about 4 hours. If you get tired or need a break, there's a nice little café and sitting area in the middle of the museum. Great place for all ages as there's something enjoyable for everyone.
Mike Magnant
Highlight of my week trip. So much information and things to see. It appears much of the collection was previously toted off to the lower 48. The items seem much more at home here. Lots of unhappy stories and images, overall the feel is sad. I hope it sometimes lifts the heart. Most see Museum, set aside 2 hours. The map is elegant but does not provide a flow or travel line.
Roy Jefferson
They have a military discount and it’s $15 per. If you have kids, they could qualify for a student discount as well. There is soooo much to do so take and plan for at least 2-3 hours. They do have a coffee shop with eateries. Four stories with everything you need to immerse yourself in understanding the indigenous people of Alaska. Listen/see through the lens of the artist as they tell you their story. I would do this first so that it may help with appreciating the land, people, culture, nature, and beauty as you navigate through each landscape.
Diana Gordon
Brought three kids under 5 as well as three younger kids and there was something for each of them. They loved Chomper the snapping turtle, the bubble maker, the toddler play area, and the jump measuring exhibit. Such a cool place for adults and kids alike.
Shopping Bag
One of the more culturally and globally aware museums with carefully curated galleries and exhibits that speak to the planet as much as they speak to our shared histories as human beings. Sometimes micro focused on Anchorage and Alaska, other times macro focused on climate change and globalization, the Anchorage Museum provides densely woven tapestries of the art, history, images, and ideas that make up the world in which we all live — and then invites you to pull on any number of threads to examine the individual strands more closely. It was thrilling experience for our family of four, ages 12-46.
Christian Gin
Cool museum, but half of it doesn't have to do with Alaska. Great for any art experts with some Alaskan things mixed in. Some nice visuals and history.
Kobe Hersel
Very very large museum, took me and my grandpa almost 3 hours to see it all. But it is very cool, we got to do the death on the ice tour as well. And it was very cool. Highly recommend.
Catherine Lewis Sáenz
If you're at the start of your trip in Anchorage/Alaska, I highly recommend stopping at the Anchorage Museum as one of your first stops. Beautiful exhibits and informative on the culture of Alaskan Natives and the environment. I wish we could have stayed longer.
Trevy Is Famous
Learning Alaskan history was cool. I appreciate the fact they have a section dedicated to the black Americans who settled in Alaska.
Trevor Joshua Hill
Big! Like Alaska. You can honestly get lost. 5 floors of historical exhibitions with video art installations and artworks formulated around Alaskan culture.
Susan Valenta
Don't wait for a rainy day to experience this wonderful museum. We really enjoyed the display on the First Nations Tribes that are an important part of the history of Alaska. There was an interesting mix of styles of art and some social commentary. We spent 3 solid hours and had a nice lunch in the bistro cafe. They offer many different kinds of discount entrance tickets and there is planetarium too. Their website explains everything well. I wish we had had the time to take the bus to see their sister site, the Alaska Heritage Center.
Kim Estry
Excellent museum, came alone and managed to spend five hours there. Saw each exhibit and bought some lunch in the cafe. Friendly workers and educational place to spend a weekday afternoon.
Dale Gardner
Anchorage is fortunate to have such a marvelous museum. Many beautiful works of art can be enjoyed, from classical paintings by visitors and transplants to exquisite pieces be Native Alaskans. The museum also does a superb job at presenting the history and cultures of the different original peoples of this awe-inspiring land.
Cliff Clark
I would recommend checking out the Anchorage Museum. Great place to bring the kiddos and the big kids too.
Marta S
Very nice museum. Great exhibit. Convenient parking in basement.
Christine Groening
We had an okay time here. You have to pay for parking nearby. And we were hoping to have more fun for our toddler, but most of the Imaginarium was closed due to COVID. Everything else seemed to be art galleries. We did enjoy the Alaska history portion of the museum, though.
Alexis Cowell (Alexis I Cowell)
Really big. So much to explore. Clean bathrooms. Good view with large windows on the second floor
Angi H
This museum has a lot more to offer than I was expecting! 4 floors of stunning exhibits and an impressive collection of native artifacts from various tribes. We spent about 4 hours here while waiting for the rain to die down. I definitely would recommend comfy shoes!
CaTT In Oround (CaTT)
When standing on the grounds it has a feeling of being peaceful...that's my opinion 😼.I keep gravitate back to this wonderful place..😇👍✌😼
Adnan Khalil
Can easily spend several hours here. A variety of art, interactive displays and important history lessons. Great place to visit.
Сергей Филиппов
A very good museum. There is something to see, cultural staff, it was nice to spend time there and learn more about Alaska and Anchorage.
jl cole
Wonderful experience! I could spend hrs in this place.
Amith Ram
Much bigger than I expected. Lots of interesting exhibits on native culture, science / geology as it relates to Alasks and a decent art wing. Definitely come here if you have the time. Google maps shows closed but it is open same times as the museum site indicates
Paul Silverstein
Great museum. Very modern, clean, and lots of space to move around. I didn't feel crowded and forced to move on to another exhibit. Interesting interactive exhibits and very nice art. We didn't even get through all the levels!
Scott Smothermon
We went to the museum today. Prices seem to have gone up since we last visited. For what the museum is overall perhaps not a bad price, but during this visit, two whole floors were closed and there were many of the activities in the discovery area that were marked as not working or just not working anyway. Slightly disappointed with how much we paid compared to what was available to us. It seems every time we visit there are less things. Kids still enjoyed what there was and we still spent close to 2 hours there.
Arina Filippenko
This is my favorite museum in the world. The Anchorage Museum’s current exhibit highlighting Alaskan artists is amazing. It’s inspiring to see art from such talented neighbors in various mediums. The permanent Alaska exhibit on the 2nd floor is a classic, so much fun! Currently, the soundlab is very cool and another showcase of local audio producers and musicians. Huge fan!
Free for Bank of America cardholders every first Saturday and Sunday of the month.
Raccoon Moon
Outstanding! Make some time because there is a lot to see..
Lynsey
I was so happily surprised with the seriously beautiful displays of authentic and historical indigenous clothing, explanations of and many other items within this museum. I also sat down to watch a number of the archived, historical b/w films of indigenous people from a long time ago. I would have stayed longer but I had to get home.
Iyshia Kirkland
Being from the lower 48, it was great to visit a museum, that was not just filled with the usual. The cultural and native wildlife exhibits provided loads of information that would otherwise probably never be known or thought of, by those who are not from this region.
There is something for everyone, on every level, including interactive displays. A few hours could be spent here easy, and you'd never notice how the time has flown by!
Margaret L Wiltfong Tovrea
As always, expect superb displays and interpretations throughout, as our hometown museum confirms its well-deserved reputation for high-quality work.
The current Smithsonian collaboration presenting the Arctic provides an excellent, informative, & engaging experience.
The Adventurers
Nice museum, was okay. I loved the native history floor and the planetarium. The rest was not my taste. Has no parking.
Amber Sluss
Had an amazing time and my kids loved the pass the mic section
Rebecca E.
Always fun to check out the museum💙 …
Hapa Kolea Hapa Haole
Went there for First Friday = admission is free from 6pm-9pm vs. paying almost $20 for the entrance fee, but I wouldn't mind paying $20 to go because it's THAT good. Spent almost 3 hours there and I whizzed through a couple of the exhibits, it's THAT expansive and thorough. I highly, highly recommend going, whether you're a tourist or a local.
Suzanne Severin
Spent 4 hours here. Was a great museum with a lot to offer on Alaskan history. Has a nice area for kids as well which is also fun for adults.

My husband and I completely enjoyed ourselves!! We had fun in the Discovery Museum and really enjoyed the art and the history and stories of our local Alaskan Natives. AND I made a friend!! His name is Chomper and he is a snapping turtle!!
Kay Triston
They’ve really done a great job with remodeling the museum. Maybe should add a upgrade to the kids area. As it’s been the same for awhile now so gets boring. But the exhibits are great and lots of different kinds. The eating area is nice as they have a cafe there. The baristas are rude or impatient. But overall nice museum.
John Thain
This museum is worth visiting whether you are from out of town or have lived in Alaska your whole life. Both parties will find stuff to appreciate here. All ages will love it. There is a robust kids activity center. My three year old daughter got to touch a lizard. I got to see some great art and learned more about the state I live in.
Ryan Stafford
A new look and many new exhibits!
The Anchorage Museum is a great place to spend the afternoon. Parking is either street or a distant parking garage. There is a large outdoor area with grass, trees, and benches. A bus stop is also right next to the outdoor area.
Inside the Anchorage Museum is a gift shop and a restaurant for small plates and drinks. Each level has something interesting, but remember there are no drinks allowed in much of the museum. There are two elevators, but the largest of them will access all floors. The largest elevator is also the slowest, so have a seat while you wait.
The Anchorage Museum also has music events throughout the year.
Got Emm
I love going to the first Friday events here. Seriously one of the best places to spend my time. I enjoy the different displays they chance up, and I always love wandering through the native history and learning something I never knew. Definitely a family friendly, date night, or just go by yourself and enjoy kind of thing. There’s even a Kaladi counter to order your coffee and snacks at. Thanks for having it here. :)
N R
Always changing up sections of the museum to keep it interesting. The childrens area is full of fun hands on activities to keep the minds working. The food at the coffee shop has gotten remarkably better! Staff in all of the areas are friendly and helpful.
Jonathan Hamilton Jr
This museum is awesome! The staff was kind and welcoming. The art and display was phenomenal and beautiful! I will definitely visit this museum the next time we visit Anchorage! One thing I wish though, I wish they would let us videotape, not necessarily for YouTube, but ourselves.
ASHLEY AALiYAH
I loved everything that was in there, there was a lot of reading and it was all based on facts and any type of statistics. Beautiful art and loved how there was a kid section that was based on scientific stuff which I was interested in, couldn’t bare to read every one of them. Didn’t know there was how many floors sooo, todays the first Friday of the month; maybe I can explore some more since it’s free‼️
george graham
A good example of a well run and informative museum on the history of Alaska. $20 entrance fee. Cafe, Restaurant & Bar, children’s play area, lockers to store valuables and coats. Superb.
Matthew
A+. This museum is a must do in Anchorage. I was beyond impressed by the well crafted, beautifully designed, expansive space they have here.
Truly a joy to walk through and experience during my time in Alaska. Will be back for sure!
John Rommen
Amazing museum! Beautiful exhibits of the native culture, artwork and hands on sections for the kids. Our 4 hour parking was not long enough to get to do everything. Will be going back.
Mel Kuszak
Very beautiful museum. The stroll through was very well thought out and the pieces original. They offer a coffee spot and books for sale. Grounds are well kept and inviting of a stroll.
William Lasko
Great local art and kids section with hands on exhibits.
Logan T .PhD
I always love the tastefully constructed Anchorage Museum. The displays stoke a passion inside of me for Alaskan history and Art. Currently they have beanbag chairs in the sun room that provides for relaxation and reflection. Great spot to take a lunch break!
Amy Demas (Communicate Excellence)
I was in Anchorage for one day and the excitement of the locals when I asked about this site was high so I walked to the museum. I spent half a day there and LOVED it!!!!
vishu shrivastava
I normally don’t visit the museums but this one was worth the visit. We visited this museum after visiting Denali and felt that we should have visited the museum first. We learned a lot about Alaskan history and Athabaskan’s ways and artifacts.
cloudystxrs
Excellent Museum! I went here, and learned so much. Their Discovery Center is extremely fun, and educational. The artwork in the West Wing is Stunning! Only thing...The General Admission should probably include the Planetarium. I am a type of person that LOVES space, planets, etc. When you pay for the Planetarium, I didn’t see anything written about the Current Shows. It tells you the name of the show, but nothing else. Overall Great expierience and a great stop in Anchorage
Ranan A.H
Very interesting Museume. A must see one to understand the history of Alaska. There is also a small theater to experience the Arora ligjts for $6 dollers. Kids enjoyed it especially the science section.
Sierra
Fun exhibits for everyone. Parking is across the street, fairly close! There is a cafe in the museum. Plenty for the kids to enjoy.
George Case
First Friday is always a fun experience for the kids, and is free. Lots of interactive exhibits
Robert Garland
Anchorage museum was a great experience we really had a great time viewing the history of the Alaskan people and how it has evolved into today’s world.
Erin Ford
The Anchorage Museum was fantastic! We were fortunate enough to be there while they had a beautiful Black Joy exhibit in the main atrium. While all of the art was beautiful, the top floor dedicated to the various tribal nations indigenous to Alaska was amazing! You could easily spend multiple hours on that floor alone taking in all of the videos, colorful garb and beautiful artifacts.
PhatAngus
Super museum depicting Alaskan & native heritage! Lots of great exhibits and interesting art work.
Brian Schroeder
Great place love the look of the building
Bradley W. (Silent Walrus)
The exterior and interior design of the museum are a sight to behold. The exhibits were will detailed and very informative. Enjoyed learning about the different tribes that inhabit the Alaska area. The art gallery was fully stocked with paintings, photos and sculptures for all to ponder. Hope you enjoy it too.
Brandi Brown
Shockingly wonderful! We had a great experience here! The art is diverse, the native stories are compelling and provide perspective while creating understanding and sympathy. The Blacks in Alaska exhibit is great and we absolutely love the children’s discovery center. I’m so happy we went today, we will become regulars here.
Dawn Oster
Wonderful museum. So much to see.
Waffle Company
What a great museum right here in Alaska. Highly recommend spending a day going through and reading about Alaska.
David Day
They cover a lot of ground from contemporary art to the history of igneous groups in Alaska. They even have a large "discovery section" to keep the kids busy.
Edith Trudgett
Mind blown by the quality of modern art on top floor. Local history totally new for us and was very well presented and highly informative.
Grady Kiehl
It’s a nice museum. Personally the second floor was all that I cared about, with everything the tribes of Alaska craft. Didn’t understand the art on the third and fourth floors but that doesn’t mean other people wouldn’t like it hence the 5 stars.
Neve Studios
The museum has grown and the attractions are fun and interactive. I enjoy the new art, the theme, and the overall feel.
Jacques Manuel (JM)
Reading all those histories and getting to know the people here, nice musuem it is.
Monica Trickey
Wonderful!! I've lived here since 1974 and never went in there until today. I will definitely go back one of these days when I have guests come up from the lower 48!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Nancy Wallis
Free today thanks to Alaska Airlines credit card. Magnificent displays and watched a presentation on the Aurora Borialis in the theatre. I would love.to go again as I could not see everything!
Miriam Yang (quyksilver)
A huge museum about Alaska with a wide variety of exhibits.
Jack Flynn
Very extensive museum! 4 floors with excellent variety of exhibits. We spent the whole day there. Nice park next to museum which is nice for a picnic. The day we went there was a food truck offering snacks and baked treats with funds going to a charity to help the homeless. Great museum!
Kaylyn Mitchell
We had an awesome visit to the museum.
Jiang Zhu
Very nice collection on Native Amarican's life and culture.
Lori Hardel
Really fascinating!! I Loved the heritage on Native culture
Helen Walicka
Downtown Anchorage worth a trip to get the feel of the culture of the Native people. Includes many artefacts, paintings and exhibitions. Gives you an insight into all off Alaska.
Roshini
Worth a visit if you appreciate art and/or anthropology. Lots to see and a great way to learn about the state and its history
Dave Bradshow
A very good regional museum, encompassing art, history, and natural history, with an in-depth emphasis on native culture with the assistance of the Smithsonian Institution. The art programs are also focused on art of the region with sections of contemporary, indigenous, and great examples of more traditional early 20th century landscape paintings, sometimes blending all 3 forms in the same galleries. The displays are well thought out and beautifully executed with a decent amount of explanatory text and descriptive video. The Women of the North exhibition was interesting and thought provoking, if a bit over reaching in scope. The collection of indigenous artifacts mounted in collaboration with the Smithsonian is certainly the best of it's kind, and shows the incredible beauty, sophistication, and power of the various cultures of the region. Make sure you set aside enough time to see as much as you can. It's a huge museum.
luisa doraz
I highly recommend this museum while you are visiting Anchorage Alaska. So many beautiful displays. Many gorgeous photos and paintings. Lots of activities for the kids at the Discovery center. My stay was made a lot easier because of my disability with the help of Todd! Thank you so much Todd for all of your help! Definitely a place I would visit again next time I am in beautiful Alaska!
david shoemaker
This is mostly an art exhibit. Not what we were expecting. However the interactive experiences were really cool.
Kristiane Naegler
Wonderful and Educational! Don't miss this. Has activities for children.
Sara Diamond
The kids had an amazing time in the interactive portions of the museum!
Marilyn Kosbruk
Fun, enjoying experience. Very entertaining. So much to see and learn about. Highly recommend 👌
Aditya Narayanan
The museum is an excellent place to spend a few hours while in Anchorage. It is extensive, covering almost anything related to Alaska. It ranges from the Arctic Studies Center (with hundreds of indigenous artifacts) to the Discovery Center (containing interactive exhibits about many scientific phenomena) to other diverse areas as well.
Leslie Williams
Amazing exhibits. Definitely need to take your time going through them. This is not a museum to rush through. Beautiful
Joshua Everett
Beautiful museum, rich with history, heritage, Alaskan scenery and unique exhibits.
Thomas Oswald
Fascinating galleries showcasing indigenous to territorial to present. Particularly impressed with the depth of the Smithsonian Arctic Studies collection, showcasing separate Siberian-Alaskan-Canadian indigenous cultural artifacts and video interviews of the people and their experiences. Beautiful building.
Jana Taylor
Decent. Better than I expected. It's got a hodge podge of different things, from a hands on kid's area to fine art, to a native American art area, and Black history.
Parking is across the street, not free. There is a small Cafe inside as well.
If you have kids they will probably only really like the discovery area.
Sonia Jimenez
I really enjoyed this museum. A great way to spend an afternoon. The art was really cool, made cooler if you takw the time to read the placques. Staff was friendly.
Athena “Sissy”
I always love the museum. Alaskan history is rich and plentiful. Never a bad choice to go and learn about Alaska.

Awesome space. Fantastic collections. New collections come all the time. Highly recommend. Frequent free days
Molly Woo
It's a quick visit, great way to understand Alaska culture.
Steve Hill
The top 1.5 floors are pretty sparse in terms of content, and the first floor is almost exclusively hands on stuff for kids. That just leaves 1.5 floors of real, significant exhibitions. But what's there is great! I particular enjoyed seeing their way of showing the same object across the various people groups that make up the area side by side for comparison and contrast.
A D
Amazing exhibits and place for children. Love the tough women of the north exhibit.
Bc Costanzo
The Anchorage Museum was awesome to visit. Lots of artwork, information on the natives, the planetarium, the science exhibit that’s very interactive, there’s just a lot to see & do. Thoroughly enjoyed this visit.
Jung H. Im
Very interesting place. A lot of history culture to be learned. I could spend all day there if I could.
Nicole Mether
I visited today and was quite disturbed by one of your exhibits. It was a video with text talking about noises made during sex, accompanied by audio of a male groaning during a sexual encounter. At first I wasn’t paying attention to what it was until it suddenly caught my attention. Why would a museum display something like that? And if you are going to, why was it not displayed in an area only accessible to adults? Who decided that would be acceptable to display this in an area accessible to children? This is not acceptable in any form!
Leif Birnbaum
Good place to go on a bitter cold and windy day.
James Davis
My wife and I were blown away by how phenomenal this museum is. Coming from Chicago, we have pretty high standards for what a good museum is and the Anchorage Museum met and exceeded our expectations!
The exhibits are great and thorough, the staff were friendly, and every resource was obviously heavily researched and presented brilliantly. This is a fantastic way to start your trip in Alaska - it will give you a great window into the background of this amazing state!
Jaysha
I visited the museum on April 16, 2021. I really enjoyed their "Extra Tough: Women of the North" exhibit. It gave me a chance to learn about the Iñupiaq people and their customs. Finally, it was a bit uncanny to see the current COVID-19 pandemic as a part of written history. References to the pandemic spanned several of their exhibits. Overall, I feel my experience at the museum was well worth the price of admission.
Nataly Lorin
Wonderful place. Very interesting.
Marcus Conway
Fantastic exhibition. Great for kids. Also great coffee
Sonali Joshi
New look! Great landscaping! Worth the visit museum for art and history lovers!
Susan Stephens
The displays were outstanding. The map of the internal displays was a bit confusing. Some displays were not photographical, no flashes allowed. All in all very enlightening and amazing!
JC
This museum what NOT what I expected. I loved the "wokeness" of the museum but also the history of the indians. There is a little bit of something for everyone here.
downside: my son bought a ram head that we asked the gift shop to send to us in Florida. It was not packaged well at all and ended up breaking.
Simon Carpenter
I really enjoyed this museum. I found the exhibits very balanced in terms of presentation. There is a beautiful gallery up top showcasing young indigenous artists, there is an extensive gallery about the history of Alaska, and the art collection is extensive. A beautiful building and wonderful exhibits.
Bryan Bell
Good exhibits, kids area needs an overhaul
Matthew Otten
An utterly mind blowing experience! So much on Indigenous culture, the Black experience in Alaska, LGBTQ+, industry, volcanoes, lower 48 perception of the state,... Just amazing. Could easily spend 5 hours there.
Mary Wiggins
Love this museum. It's a nice quiet escape and has nice areas for kids to learn hands on.
Don Rosenberger
A world class museum and a must see when visiting Alaska.
Abdel Ruiz
what a beautiful place. great experience!
Malinda Patterson
I loved this museum. I felt like the quality of the exhibits was really high; everything in the museum was really well put together. I learned a lot about Alaska and Alaskan history that I hadn’t know previous. This was a great way for my husband and I to begin our trip to Alaska.
Hussein Alawsi
Awesome museum. Amust visit spot if you are in Anchorage!
Caravela Skynaut
Modern building, quite a different museum than your usual.
Anne Komac
I generally don't care for museums, but this was really something special and well worth a visit. There's local history, there's amazing classical & modern art, there's a discovery area for kids (that's just as fun for adults). This museum was such a pleasant surprise - we spent hours there.
Constance Miles
Just love visiting. Great exhibits and fun to see the new ones that come through. And... staff was super awesome :)
Rachael B
The museum showed a wide variety of cultures. Upstairs there was a full exhibit that detailed Native American lives which was super cool to read.
Paul Buehrens
Great exhibits of Native American daily art and life
Franny Yeates
I’ve gone to readings there and even read some of my own work at one of the events at the museum. The place has really upgraded itself considerably. My daughter went with her boyfriend recently and really enjoyed it as well. If you can catch the days when it’s lower price that’s when everybody I know goes. The website’s good for that info! Best museum in Alaska, kids event and updated exhibits year round, and always actively seeking acitivieties.
Jeff H
I visited the museum several years ago and thought it was fantastic. I brought a friend there last month and was kind of disappointed. Lots and lots of artwork on display; we both thought it was too much. I was hoping for more displays pertaining to the early settlement of Anchorage, or Alaska becoming a state - these displays were there several years ago; they must have been taken away.
Ryan Grzes
A lot of wonderful exhibits! Just popped in during a stroll through Anchorage on a whim and it did not disappoint! A ton of educational artifacts and I enjoyed that they had a large focus on Indigenous Culture. I was also surprised and glad that they did not seem to shy away from displaying pieces that highlighted some of the negative aspects of the impact European settlement has had on it. I think it is always important to learn as much as we can about events - both positive and negative.
Elle
What an amazing museum. A very thorough exhibits on the local native, with so many artifacts, videos and story telling. It blew me away the attention to detail and the depth of history. I also really enjoyed the artwork on the first floor, so many pieces to look at, modern and historic artists, amazing. I planned a couple of hours, but stayed for close to 4.
Arsal Nawaz
Great first fridays love free entry from 6-9pm :)
Dillon Fuller
Alot of cool history with alaska and the people but over priced. Also there is a whole floor dedicated to paintings which wasnt my thing. It was still a cool experience and recommend it

Came with friends. Not my thing, but U.S.ARMY band was great.
Ryan McGrew
Went a few times. They had some great exhibits. Wish they brought back the fossil exhibit! Great place.
Sunrise Girl
A great place for kids and great activites. I love the animation part ibdont see that much and its really unique. Unfornetly the ball exibit seems to be partly broken. The bubbles are fun to play with and i liked making the fake touch screen volcano erupt. Perfect for anyone interested in science or a good time. P.S if ypur afraid of heights or elevators the building gets pretty high (at least for me) but i justbhad to close my eyes a bit.
Jeff Heaton
The museum itself was great. Very good value and had exhibits that focused mainly early state history, Russia, and the Native Americans that live here. The cafe left to be desired, I tried to eat there, but after waiting 10 minutes for a someone just to arrive and give me the menu/water he never stopped by, I left. There was only two other groups in the cafe.
Tom Lawlor
Seriously what's being done about the indigenous people right outside on most every street corner, homeless and ignored ? The museum is top notch glorifying their ancestors and culture for a hefty entrance fee.
Lewis Wasserman
This is a mid-size museum offering a look at traditional native Alaskan culture, and focusing on how that culture is blending with modern western culture. The museum recently was damaged by an earthquake, but most of it is open except the Smithsonian exhibit. It would be easy to spend a whole day here, though you can get a pretty good look in 2-3 hours. Also, be sure to check out the Planetarium show on the Aurora Borealis.
Don’t bother with Muse (the restaurant) — take a walk to a local restaurant for lunch.
Dan Pritchett
It was ok but I am not really into art and it is primarily an art museum. The descriptions I read didn’t describe it that way.
Dan Betz
This museum had a little bit of everything and it looks to be getting a major expansion. The upper floors had beautiful collections of native art, and artifacts, and an interesting display on life in the more remote parts of the state. Being an overgrown child my favorite part was the ground floor where they had the more hands on teaching kids science displays.
Bonnie Glaze
A great start to our trip. We learned a lot about the Inuit from the art and displays and they had a great 'science' area. We loved the historical exhibits as well. Its a part of Alaska that you don't get to hear about living on mainland America.
But when they say the close at 6pm then they really mean it. We were in the gift shop and suddenly all the lights were being turned out because 'they were closing'. I'm glad we weren't out in the main museum at that time!
Ramon Gonzalez
Went in on a Sunday because it was snowing and couldn't do much around town. Back in Chicago we have world class museums and I was impressed by this museum! Honestly, I thought the museum would be very dry but I was surprised by the exhibits.
Lots of great local history and even some great temporary exhibitions when I went. I walked out feeling expired. I'd recommend it to visitors.
My only regret is not going on a Saturday when it's free for members of my bank, lol.
FairytaleFilmmaker
There is a lot of artwork but I was more interested in history. I wanted to see more on earthquake, gold rush and ice age discoveries. Kid space was very nice. Cafe prices were fair. Metered 2-hr limit parking in the area was a bummer.
Pat Tipton
The art work is stunning and the historical exhibits are very good. The "listening exhibit" in the Chugach Gallery is a must. One of the best gift shops around
Benjamin Kastelic
This place is amazing- I highly recommend suiting this place if you are traveling to Anchorage
James Taysom
This was a great place to come learn about some of Alaska's history. There was a great section for kids too. My inner child couldn't be restrained and had fun with some of the activities. I would definitely want to bring my kids back here given the chance.
Shiermaine “Abby” Francisco
Its a pretty good museum. I really like their exhibits on the history of Alaska and Natives. It's pretty interesting. The couple times I've visited they always had something different than the last. It still is pretty exciting to visit every time!
Conor O'Dowd
Great museum, somewhat daunting in size. Highlight is the current temporary exhibition Death in the Ice about the Franklin expedition of 1845. Excellent First Tribes exhibition though we preferred the smaller Juneau museum as it was easier to take in. Relatively expensive at $18 plus $5 for Death in the Ice. This includes a barely-disguised “tourist tax” as Alaskans get in cheaper. Juneau was $6.
Josh Lonn
World-class works, excellent interactive exhibits for kids thoughtfully laid out.
Alison P. Hunter
I was blown away. This museum is world class, and absolutely worth the price of admission and then some. I visited twice in my three day Anchorage stay.
patricia wells
Love our Muse, little bit of everything to see. Art is wonderful, the Native Smithsonian display is one of the best in the USA
CorreyHope Kustin
As a travel agent:
You are always told "Do not touch it" IF you break it -you pay for it. Well at this Center you are encouraged to
Touch it. That's right...a museum that allows you to play! Make a giant bubble or feel a tornado.Of course I was in the bubble!
The children of Anchorage hang art throughout the walls of this giant museum. I was fascinated and couldn't believe that children under 12 years old could be so talented. They drew art representing their heritage of Native Americans and it was displayed with pride.
The museum holds boasting rights for their displays in the huge glass walls, which contain the periods of history for the Eskimos and expansion of Russian invasion. I was in awe how modern everything is and all the encouragement to touch and play to learn set up. Come learn about whaling, the gold rush, and how AK became a state.
There are classes, summer camps and group activities for all ages. If you visit ANC, I highly recommend a visit here.

We had an excellent time at this museum. I learned a lot about how Alaska became a U.S. state, and it was well presented. Many museums jam-pack you in, but this museum was airy and not claustrophobic. Large elevators that opened their doors quickly. I twisted my knee and it was easy to get a wheel-chair (my first time ever in a wheel-chair) (my knee is better now, thank you very much!). Anyway, the only reason I gave this a 4-star rating instead of a 5-star rating was that their planetarium showing on the Northern Lights was rather lame. It just had a brief 4-minute scientific explanation, which they went over way too quickly, then 40 minutes of still photos to classical music.
Christine A Eagleson
Really love the newest expansion and direction the museum is going, taking on a more modern and diverse artistic approach. Easy to spend more time on site, enjoying coffee in the atrium in between viewing all the great new installations. Best new central creative social hub.
Donald Clark
A world class museum. Really.
We went with the kids and they loved all the hands on stuff - not just for little ones but up to high teens. The story of Alaska was also very well done and the native peoples exhibit was stunning.
Modern and beautiful building with a calm atmosphere
Returnable 25c lockers for the win.
Ashley Lofstrom
Fun place for the kids, we parents enjoyed our visit also. The Planetarium has a wide variety of shows that change from week to week. The Spark lab has tons if hands on experiments and projects for the kids and the Discovery center has a volcano simulator and pressure cannon, among other things, there's a bubble lab, and they always have different labs with things from live baby turtles the kids can touch to teamwork building exercises. Eclectic to spend around 2-3 hours here, unless you visit the Planetarium, and around 45 mins. They also have free days several times throughout the year.
Krissy Key
Fascinating! There were many sections to walk around.
However, the people at the front desk will tell you to start at the top and work your way downstairs, but if you’re NOT from Alaska, I would do the opposite. While I was there the top floors were changing exibits and weren’t particularly unique to Alaska. Visiting from the lower 48, naturally I was much more interested in Alaskan culture and art than the displays they had brought in from western USA states.
The lower floors were much more interesting, having rooms filled with paintings of Alaska, photography of modern life in Alaska and of course the history and culture. My favorite was the second floor where they had displays on the different Native Alaskan groups and also the next room that gave the history of recent Alaska, focused from about the 1970s onward, about the pipeline, recent economy, and how fast Alaska has changed.
Connor Crowley
I'll go here and look at some paintings, some sculptures, maybe some artifacts... It's a good way to spend an evening. It's fun, it's educational, and it has moxie. What do you want? No, really, tell me what you want. It's okay, I won't make fun of you. Hm? Hahaha... Wait.... That? Oh... I... I thought you were joking... Sorry. I didn't... Can... can I tell you a secret? Yeah? I kind of want that too... And guess what? They have it at the Anchorage Museum.
R G
It was ok. I thought was going be very educational. And incorporate more athabaskan deni na since this Anchorage is our land. Although we got one tiny display. The kids hands on portion was ok. Need more interactive educational experience. We went when free thankfully.
Ann Randolph
Last Day in Alaska
This is really an art museum with history and culture emphasis. Looks like it any historical displays were given a fresh look. Wide variety of art and artists with ties to Alaska. Enjoyable way to end our first trip to Alaska.
Mary Wolcoff
I love taking my grandkids there for a day of fun! They vary in ages from 8-24 years old. We all have a grand time! I purchased a grandparent annual membership so I could take them more often. WOW, it has paid off because we can eat there, play there and even better educate there!! They have great movies on Wednesday nights and love the Christmas time at the museum. I guess one of my local favorites is to go see the exhibit they have of the Anchorage school districts childrens art. It is very special and amazing to see the talented kids we have here in Anchorage.
Theresa Schwab
We took our kids to the Imaginarium!! We all enjoyed it.
Athina Charbonneau
We come here regularly with our children as a homeschool family. They change out stations regularly and have fun and activities for all ages. Our kids are currently loving the Spark Lab where they get to try different experiments and test themselves. I highly recommend if you come in often, to sign kids up for the museums Science Passports, so they can gain stamps for different stations throughout the museum and once they have 3 stamps per station they can earn a Planetarium ticket.
Nicole Deren
Absolutely love the new wing. It is a beautiful museum and they always have interesting changing exhibits. The Imaginarium is wonderful for kids. Exhibit openings and dinner downtown make for a fantastic evening out.
Alex GoldenWolf
Amazing layout of a building, $.25 lockers to store belongings in. Four floors one is closed. Super lovely coffee shop inside.
Jane Lee
It’s easy to spend some time here, there is a wide variety things you can do.
Bo Kim
Amazing museum with quality exhibitions - history, arts, science, you can learn about Alaska from various perspectives. A must visit!
Yar N
Good Museum! Bigger than I expected! Clean! Front desk workers are very friendly and helpful !
Kris McIntyre
The Smithsonian floor was great, and I could happily spend days there. Personally I would skip the upper floors because the "art" is of the"I hope they didn't waste a lot of money on that" persuasion. Actually, there is a lovely view of the mountains from the 4th floor, so you might go up for that.
Justin Smith
Best thing I saw downtown. Loved the russia exhibit. A lot of the space was closed for renovations summer 2017. I wish the ticket had been discounted. Don't get tricked paying for their parking. Cheaper is only 2 blocks away
Erica Cousins
Enjoyable. Too much to go through in a day. I'd recommend the Native Heritage Museum over the exhibit on native culture here. Lots of artwork. I did enjoy the I am Inuit exhibit.
Ileana Alberti
Great exhibitions. A must when you visit Anchorage!
Court
Has free lockers available for day use with purchase of a ticket
Naomi D'abbracci
4th floor turned me off due the rap music. 3rd floor contemporary and focused on women. 2nd floor very good, but TOO DARK for me. Lighten up guys.
Near the town square and bus stops and food joints.
Jody Gustafson
They had a lot of hands on activities, for people. We saw the planetarium, enjoyed the show. I would recommend it!
Jacob Singleton
If you only have one day in Anchorage, make sure you put this on your list! The museum is state of the art, and there are plenty of interactive exhibits for children (and adults, too).
Joseph Blewitt
What an excellent way to spend a day! AM truly has something for everyone; it combines art, history, science and industry, military, and children's museums to become the Megazord of museums. This was one of my first stops on an accidental tour of Anchorage. My flight to Tokyo was diverted to Alaska after the quake, so I deplaned knowing nearly nothing about local history or native culture. I was about to be the Ugly American in my own country! Luckily, this museum saved me from my ignorance, and in a big way. It's close to everything, which was good for me because I didn't have a car, so if you're in the area, you really have no excuse to skip out on this experience.
Svilen Rusanov
Amazing place!! You can spend 2-5 h easily... Modernized and audio-visual a lots of Screens, movies and pics as well as interactive place ,not just a boring museum :) Was a pleasure to explore it :)
Mike Moss
Wow! Put this on your list if you're in Anchorage for more than half a day.
Exceeded expectations by a mile. Large museum with a great mix of art, culture, science, geology, history, and kids stuff. Well worth a visit.
Elisa Ferrante
Absolutely loved my time at this museum. It is well organized and has an incredible amount of artifacts telling some great stories and teaching a lot of history.
Marshall Hinders
Impressive museum that exceeded expectations of what you'd find in Anchorage. Smithsonian-run with friendly staff and topical displays. I enjoyed learning about Alaska's historical connections to Russia.
Bethany Marcum
It's very well done but several of the interactive/hands on exhibits were broken the day we visited. Wide range of displays for all ages and interests.
Christopher Wood
This was an excellent location to view art and culture. I was especially impressed by the Native Alaskan cultural displays. The displays had excellent and detailed information available to tell you what you were viewing.
Kidd X
This museum is massive. There are things to see for all ages. I could spend an entire day here.
Andy Montgomery
Was pleasantly surprised at the quality of exhibits at this museum. I would recommend this as a great "1st attraction" for visiting out of towners. Wealth of knowledge on all things Alaska.
Jannik Kappel
Great museum. All you want to know about Alaska, the inuit culture and the historical ties to Russia. Also a great science museum for kids and adults in the ground floor.
Martin Moody
I was very impressed with the museum. It displayed the history of the the State of Alaska and Anchorage in educational and colorful ways. Loved the 3 hours I spent there.
David Riley
Very good range of exhibits covering art, culture and geography. There are a lot of hands on exhibits too so you can easily pass a few hours in here
Lee Huiying
Hope to have more artifact and 3D images
Jasmine H
Like the new exhibit except for the mask with the razor blades which needs it. Seemed like security was following me around on a free day made me not even want to be there on a wells fargo day. Still havent received my certificate of thanks for volunteering have a plastic or clear casing on ot. One guy with a degree in meteorologist gave an 2 hour lecture on how he believes in space aliens. theres new exibit with landscape and alternate realty but i feel like im still at the museum. there were cars but theres no explanation of how one day how they might have salt water running cars. or motorcycycles with 0 emission
Mirta Jackson
My boys and I love this museum. We are members and enjoy spending going once a month or more. Of course they love "The Imaginarium" and "The Planetarium" love seeing them smile!
krysta
Amazing museum, especially for the price! Highly recommend going, especially to check out Alaska Native history curated by the Smithsonian I believe (At least that is what I saw on the wall).
Christopher .Jordan
Came here for FREE with my kids after the earthquake. Had an amazing experience with them. Thank you for that. They had a blast looking at everything and the imaginarium section too.
Gary Hawley
Truly beautiful and wonderfully curated.
Helen Huang
Amazing museum! We spent 3-4 hours there and I felt I could have spent more. Very aesthetically pleasing architecture as well.
J Pale
Although we primarily visit the imaginarium, their other exhibits never disappoint. In the past the human body exhibits, the Lego exhibits, and the Alaskana displays are top notch.
Jake Ripp
Me and my friend Vivain went here for a light show. I enjoyed what they had to offer but it was too quiet. I felt like I was yelling when I talked. If you want people and action go during tourist season. If you want a quiet calm setting go in the spring when no ones there.
Jeankyel Colon
Its so awesome!! But I think it need more floors, I recommend it.
TheDog Gamez
Great place to visit even if you did not think there even was a museum in Alaska. I went to the Lego event in May 2014. I enjoyed it quite frankly. However i expected more in that
M VL
If you are visiting and have children, look no further! This musem has interactive exhibits appropriate foe agea 1 year and older. Feom duplos to pipe cleaners, learn about science, engineering, imagination and invention. As parents we had fun too! Local history and artifacts tie into learning with the The tsunami was earthquake hands on demonstrations.
Paulina Munn
One of the most engaging and beautiful exhibits I’ve visited. Incredible storytelling. Go.

Leigh Seipp
2 Hours is never enough time to visit. My kids love the Discovery Centre area and even the adults get to learn some things too
Philippe Jeanty
We had only 1 hour so hard to judge the whole museum. We concentrated on the 2nd floor after a brief visit to the 3rd mostly art but not my favorite!
The service floor had many TV with self running shows that are ok, not sure if they are different or repeat. A few interactive screens too but not all working.
The display cases have good artifacts but are so poorly illuminated that some of the info panels are barely readable. Why?
Rajesh Kamisetty
Great place to spend few hours on our last day of Alaska trip.
Keri Mendler

(Translation) Well set out and very interesting museum. The visit begins on the fourth floor with a temporary exhibition and then continues on the floors below with the story of the transfer of ownership of Alaska from Russia to the USA and with the history of the natives. Full ticket $15. Very expensive paid parking. You can look for parking further away but cheaper. I recommend the visit.
(Original)
Museo ben allestito e molto interessante. La visita inizia al quarto piano con una mostra temporanea per poi proseguire nei piani sottostanti con la storia del passaggio di proprietà dell'Alaska dalla Russia agli Usa e con la storia dei nativi. Biglietto intero 15 dollari. Parcheggio a pagamento molto caro. Si può cercare un parcheggio più lontano ma più economico. Consiglio la visita.
Osvaldo Borgos
(Translation) I loved the facilities and their exceptional history content to the point that I was alone during the visit and spent 2 hours observing. I would visit again this time with company

Super museum and playful learning how z.Bsp. the strength of an earthquake behaves and more

(Translation) A modern museum featuring Alaskan history, life and art. There are many interesting things to look around. It was a new building, so the interior was clean and the exhibits were modern. The price is $18 for adults, but it's good to buy a $32 pass that allows you to visit the Native Heritage Center if you have time and can speak English.
Personally, I liked the East or North wing better than the West wing. For parking, there is no separate parking lot, so you have to use the roadside or public parking lot, but the parking lot right next to it is very expensive at $10 for 2 hours, so it's better to use the easy parking building a little away.
Modern and interesting museum! I enjoyed East and North Wing. $18 for admission (adult)
