I'd give this 6 stars if I could! This has been my go-to place for restorative body work for years, and I don't anticipate changing that anytime soon. With the setting being in a converted row home with relaxed/homey character (rather than a sparkling white spa) I immediately feel at ease the second I walk inside. Every practitioner I've worked with here has been top-notch. And I say "worked with," because rather than just giving a generic massage working each area kind of the same or going through the same motions they do for every other customer, they truly bring you into the experience by discussing your personal needs, day-to-day life (to get an idea of areas you might not even know need attention), aromatherapy preferences, pressure preferences, etc.

I love coming to Sanctuary! I've seen two massage therapists here over the last few years and I've had great experiences with both. The ambiance is a beautiful old home, very warm and cozy. The staff are responsive to needs/desires for a massage and really care about helping you feel better. I got my partner to start coming here this year and he loves it too. The 90-min deep tissue massage was heavenly. What a gem. Tucked away on 2nd street. Easily walkable to cafés/restaurants for a quick bite to eat after your service. Highly recommend!

I had a great time at sanctuary on second! I got my first ever massage here. I had a 60 min session with Grace. I came in with stress and strain from my neck to my hips. Grace handled me with care, made sure I was comfortable, and really helped easing my pain. Thank you, Grace! It was really easy to make an appointment. Just go through their website, pick a date/time and pick a person (if you want). They'll send you email and text notifications to remind you. So easy!

Grace ultimately was my therapist because my original had a conflict. Honestly, thrilled. If you like deep tissue—definitely go here. If you have chronic headaches from neck pain—definitely go here. It’s an adorable space and I had a genuinely phenomenal massage. Going back next month.

Terrific experience at Sanctuary on 2nd, which is a welcoming, friendly, and soothing environment in an old Philadelphia row home. Came for a couple's massage and were welcomed by our massage therapists, Meghan and Danielle, who chatted with us each individually to assess problem area(s) and set a roadmap for how they would be addressed in this session and gave us time to settle. Periodically throughout the massage, they checked in to make sure we were comfortable (e.g., temperature, lighting, and sound) and that the pressure was enough/not too much. As others have noted, we appreciated that the appointment clock starts when the massage begins, which allows you to chat before/after without feeling rushed. Second session was an individual massage with Wren: all massage therapists have been terrific to work with! Already have my next few appointments booked!

The whole experience was relaxing, from the moment I stepped in - to second I left. The massage itself was incredible and had me refreshed and renewed. My husband and I just went for a couple’s massage and it was FANTASTIC. We have had several massages on vacations around the world (Morocco, Thailand, Greece...), but this was our first massage at home in Philly. I had Wren and she was excellent- personable, professional, and very attentive. My husband’s masseuse (Kristie) was great too -even he was raving and saying we’d be back again soon (which is a feat because he’s typically quite reluctant to splurge on luxuries that aren’t for special occasions ). Loved the atmosphere- very cozy in an old-fashioned house but with some edge. Covid precautions were strictly adhered to (which we really appreciate and thankfully are both vaccinated). We were both very excited and will be back!

The Sanctuary on 2nd is unlike anything I've ever experienced. Walking into it for the first time, I felt more like I was in a Victorian curiosities shoppe than a spa, which honestly put me completely at ease because of who I am. The entire time I was there, I felt safe, supported, and treated with care and respect. Meghan (who I will review individually) is a true healer and elevated my experience beyond a normal massage day. My girlfriend was there that day and I believe had Doireann, who was just as fantastic. There are some really special pieces to this parlor, and I don't want to share them all because some of it is a great surprise. Overall, though, I felt that consent, health, comfort, and holistic wellness were highly valued and respected. I recommend Sanctuary on 2nd for anyone who has had bad previous experiences with massage and wants to try again in a safer space where they will be respected, LGBTQ+ clients, and anyone who wants to have a spa experience in an alternative setting that actually does somehow manage to pull together vintage goth and day spa into a cohesive environment. I am not local to Philly, but I am going to make it a point to try and schedule time here whenever I visit. Tips for when you go: - Have a vague idea of the type of work you would like done: relaxation, muscle/injury work, energy healing, etc. - Engage in the pre-session conversation, and don't be afraid to make requests or suggestions to make your experience what you want it to be. - Take your time at the end getting up and let yourself relax. - Think about some of your favorite fragrances (no reason <_<). - If you can spare it, try one of the add-ons. They're worked into the massage session so it's all very fluid. About Meghan: (Note: I was distracted and forgot to get Meghan's pronouns when I was there, so I'll be using they/them, but it's always good to ask!) Wow. Meghan is a Healer with a capital H. The beginning of our session was spent with them speaking with me about my needs and reviewing my intake form (which they actually took the time to read). Consent was explicitly brought up, and Meghan gave the very strong impression that my comfort was paramount and I was encouraged to shape the experience the way I wanted it. After a brief but collaborative discussion, Meghan gave a rundown of what they planned to do, again leaving it open for me to contribute tweaks or changes for my comfort and satisfaction. On the table, Meghan was very skilled and deliberate. There were periodic check-ins to make sure I was getting the experience I wanted, but not so many that it detracted from my ability to relax and enjoy the moment. Meghan followed the plan we discussed, which involved a fair amount of energy work and upper body release. I was impressed with their ability to tune into the areas that were really holding tension for me, even if I hadn't noticed it. I left the room feeling like the world had been removed from my shoulders (somewhat literally to be honest). And afterwards, Meghan actually thanked me for the work I did on the table by letting go and allowing them to do what they needed to do. I get a distinct sense that this is work that they actively and genuinely enjoy doing, and that they want to be of service to the community. I'm very impressed, and grateful for the experience.

Sanctuary on second is the only place I ever recommend. You can expect amazing massages by incredible massage therapists who are well trained with diversified experience, and who are also genuinely good hearted people. I just recently went earlier this week, and saw Dave for a deep tissue. I was a few minutes late, and he was extremely understanding and welcoming. I have been feeling like I threw my back out so it was a little sensitive. He was extremely thorough and helped release a ton of tension in a deep but soothing way. We had a great conversation, and he gave me a ton of tips on how to better treat my back and better habits I can do at home. Once again, another five-star experience at sanctuary on second. Highly recommend!!
