Where to start? We couldn’t be more happier with our new furnace and a/c for our main levels in our house and our a/c and best mini-split in our upper level!!!! Zack and dom where great!!! Very professional and worked efficiently. Kind and respectful. Walked me through on what they did and showed me how to work everything. You can tell these guys love their job and take pride in their work! This is the 2nd time we’ve used northstar. 1st time for our mini-split and 2nd time for our furnace/ac. Travis has a kick butt team!!!! We highly recommend northstar heating and cooling! Dennis

The good: - Recommended quality equipment with fantastic warranties (Amana furnace, condenser, and coil. Navien tankless water heater.) - Installed the central air a week before the scheduled install date due to summer heat, which was very much appreciated! (Especially with the high demand and unprecedented labor shortage.) - Condenser came dented. They sent it back to the supply house and got a new one without me even knowing or asking! - Baseline 13-14 SEER condenser installed is the ASX13 with Copeland CoreSense diagnostics, heavy sound deadening top instead of stamped, and compressor sound cover. Didn't try to upsell a higher-SEER unit that isn't really worth it in Northern MN, and didn't try to install a cheap builder-grade unit. Did not oversize the unit. - Furnace, condenser, and coil combination have AHRI certification. - Furnace and water heater intake and exhaust properly sloped and terminated. Terminate 12" apart on 90 degree offset planes. - Navien tankless intake and exhaust properly attached (no street fittings). - Neatly plumbed. Lineset was run well. Gas lines have proper sediment traps. Tankless has proper service valves, pressure relief, etc. - Evaporator coil condensate line has trap, condensate lines have overflows to prevent shutdown in case of pump failure. - Recommended Aprilaire purifier with the thick 4" filters by default. This is so much better than the typical 1" filters. - Installed high-quality Little Giant condensate pumps by default. The bad: - I had to add some caulk around the terminations on the side of the house. There were some gaps. - Probably could have managed/cleaned up concrete dust in the basement better. - Didn't have concrete for sealing up where the oil tank pipes used to go out the side of basement, which would have been better than spray foam and chimney sealer. - Set the wrong DIP switch (2) after I asked to enable internal recirculation on the water heater (should have been switch 1). Not a big deal, but glad I checked. - Supply plenum construction was not ideal, but it was also a very tough spot, so I understand why they did it the way they did. - Scuffed up the basement stairwell wall and door a fair amount when taking out the oil tank. A blanket over that side of the tank would have helped. - Missing a hammer and level since the install. Overall, Northstar Services is a competent, honest, and quality HVAC contractor. The office is responsive, understanding, and kind. There were some issues with my install, as noted, but I think that these are probably the exception rather than the rule. They were also not critical issues. This is a professional HVAC company. I chose them based on reviews and my interaction with Travis when he came for an estimate. They also reimbursed me for the wall damage and tools, so I have updated this to 5 stars.

Zack, Sam and Dom were excellent throughout the installation of a new high efficiency gas furnace and removal of an outdated oil furnace and oil tank. They kept me informed throughout the process and were very efficient and knowledgeable about everything. The inspector came and everything passed with flying colors. Dom drained the oil tank efficiently, Sam went over how to operate the new thermostat including all the settings, and when everything was installed Zack went over the furnace itself and showed me where, how and when to replace the filter and how to order them. I couldn't be more pleased with the whole process and Zack, Sam and Dom were great! Highly recommend your company, products & services and especially these three gentlemen!!

Fantastic service by very friendly and knowledgeable crews. I had a new furnace and AC unit installed in one day. They removed the old furnace and cleaned up all of the mess, to the point where you couldn't even tell they were ever here. After a few days, I called them back to work out a couple of small issues; and they took care of everything with no questions. I would highly recommend this company. I also have a ten year warranty to add peace of mind.

We had an on-demand water heating system installed and a water softener. The cost was a bit expensive, but the professionalism and expertise was phenomenal. My husband and I had discussed how we needed to revamp our whole system anyway. With our heat going out this was an opportunity to just get it done. We haven't had any issues whatsoever since the install. It looks beautiful! I wasn't home for the heating system install, but I was there for the water softener install and the guys were extremely nice and answered all my questions and showed me everything I needed to know about the water softener. They definitely new what they were doing and made sure everything was running smoothly before they left. We are extremely satisfied with our end result and will definitely use NorthStar Services again in the future if needed. Thank you NorthStar Services!

When we decided to switch from a fuel oil heating system to a propane system, we called several heating/cooling companies in the Duluth area. When we contacted NorthStar Services, we were in touch with Charles Deville, who came out that evening and talked to us about heating systems and what would work for our home. He provided us with a very competitive quote by the next morning. We chose NorthStar to install our new system and even upgraded to add air conditioning. Charles answered our questions in great detail while providing timelines and the next steps, including coordinating propane installation with Curtis Oil. On installation day, Zach and Dom showed up on time and worked efficiently. They were personable and explained what was going on as they worked throughout the day. Once the system was installed and clean-up was completed, Zach and Dom showed us our new system and even took extra steps to seal up a crack in our wall that was hidden behind our old fuel oil tank. Charles, Zach, and Dom made this process easy and stress-free while providing excellent customer service. I highly recommend NorthStar services for any heating and A/C services.

Anthony and Corey were the installers, and they were able to come two days sooner than expected. They did a great job, and our house is so much warmer. I highly recommend this company.

Hats off to Zach and Dom for their stand up job removing my old boiler system and replacing it with a brand new unit. They left my short term rental unit clean following the work done in the unit, which was far different than others I had prior to calling Northstar. Northstar was the only company to go out of their way to get someone to me to look at my current system , explain why it needed replacing , and had it replaced that same day ! Northstar arrived as scheduled and replaced our furnace, AC, and hot water heater. The employees were respectful of our home and each other. They worked well together and addressed any questions I asked professionally. After accidentally cracking a thin piece of trim on the inside of our door leading to basement. They installed an upgraded Wi-Fi thermostat (to compensate) and made sure I was aware of the accident. We did experience one issue the following day with the furnace not staying on. After calling Northstar and explaining the issue, the returned the same day and are currently investigating the issue as a team. Very polite, proficient technicians.

With how hot it has been all summer we finally decided it was time to add an AC unit to the house. We had 3 different local HVAC companies quote out the job and NorthStar was far and away the best option for us. We had Northstar Heating and Cooling install a new furnace and central AC in our home a few weeks ago. We had called and gotten quotes from a few local companies before deciding to work with these guys based on our initial meeting with the owner. He won us over when he came out to give us a quote and spent over an hour in our home educating us on our options and conversing with us about our families, how his business got started and the people he employs. My husband and I both agreed that we wanted to use them as soon as he left, based on the unparalleled effort he put in to winning our business, his excellent online reviews and the fact that he presented as such an honest and hard working local business owner and dedicated family man. We got on the schedule for the following week and could not have been happier with the techs that came out to do the install. The guys were here for the majority of the day, and I felt very comfortable with them in my home. They laid tarps to protect the floors and cleaned up behind themselves thoroughly. But I was mostly impressed by how friendly and polite they were. At one point my son and daughter were carrying a large TV out of the house and one of the techs happened to cross paths with them and actually offered to take over my daughters spot moving the TV. He helped my son get it down the stairs and loaded up into the car. They even left me a cute little plant and thank you for your business card when they were finished. Completely above and beyond service that far exceeded our expectations and I haven’t even mentioned the excellent product quality we got or their amazing financing options! The morning after the install I called their office with a question about our furnace and they had a tech back out to my house 45 minutes later to help us out. We would definitely recommend this company and use them for all of our heating and cooling needs from now on!

FANTASTIC service!!! On a subzero day in January my furnace shutdown. I was in sudden need of a new furnace. I called Northstar and Travis came by shortly to review the situation. Keith and Ethan came to our home to install our splits and our boiler system. They were extremely friendly and professional. After a couple of days I told them they felt like family and jokingly told them we would expect to see them for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Travis and his team were great! I had to replace an old fuel oil boiler with a natural gas one. Travis was very quick in returning phone calls and very knowledgeable when I had questions. I would highly recommend them. The guys were very conscient about keeping things clean. I told them not to worry about covering the floors...old tile..pretty cleanable, anyway, they insisted. (Hindsight, so glad they did. Taking out a 65 year old fuel oil boiler makes quite a mess!!) They also cleaned up wonderfully after making such a huge mess!! Very hard workers equipped with a solid leader...that’s what you get when you hire them to do your work. Nice to see nowadays!!

The technician was very thorough in explaining everything he found, plus what kind of filters we should be using. He even emptied our dehumidifier and checked to see if there were any recalls on it. Fantastic service and honest and fair staff. They've come out to replace our furnace and fix our AC. On both ocassions, we felt like we were made a priority and had technicians to our house ASAP. When our furnace went out in the middle of winter late at night, they had someone on call come out and set up heaters throughout our house and had people there first thing in the morning to set up the new furnace. We’ve had Northstar service our furnace twice now: once as a check-up and once for a repair. Both times we’ve found them fast, reasonable and very helpful! These guys are awesome! My neighbor told me about them and I’m so glad she did! They installed a mini split system in my house last summer and it’s so nice to have AC. Works great! So my heat went out last week(early March) These guys showed up within 40 mins. Being I have kiddos in the house it's not like I can go without for any period of time and these guys knew it. They made sure I was up and running by the end of the day. This was in entire install and removal of my old furnace. They were clean and professional. No cussing, clean friggin guys. They had Russ out there within hours and he completed the job quickly and at a fair price. He covered his shoes and cleaned up everything. I cannot say enough good things about NORTHSTAR Heating & Cooling. My furnace went out on a Sunday afternoon in January; one call to them and Russ was at my house within the hour to diagnose the problem. He talked parts & labor rates, and we decided on a complete new HVAC system after weighing costs (my furnace was 25 years old). He left me with infrared heaters to warm the house overnight. James & Matt were on site the very next morning to tackle the complete install. Very friendly, did exceptional work, and then took the time afterwards to reprogram my wifi thermostat and test all systems, show me all aspects of the systems, and provide information for their Club membership for maintenance, etc. Will ABSOLUTELY recommend these guys to all my friends & colleagues. You all rock!!

Russ did an amazing job!! At first I had another company come out and look at our furnace that wasn’t working. They basically told me I would need a new furnace and broke a piece of piping instead of screwing it off. I called NorthStar and they told me I did NOT need a new furnace. They fixed everything and got my furnace working properly, very quickly. When natural gas was announced it would be making it's way to my community I asked Travis at North Star Heating & Cooling if it made as much financial sense as they hype I was hearing. After an honest assessment, no crystal balls but a simple calculator he showed me the pros & cons of making the switch. Clearly it was an unbiased opinion since he is in the business of furnaces, not fuel sources. I appreciated his honesty and have had him in to service my system since.

Beyond impressed with Northstar! Noticed water dripping from under our furnace and called them right away. Jen was very helpful and had someone at our house within a couple of hours. Unfortunately we needed a new furnace and not just a repair. They brought over space heaters that kept our 1400sq ft house in the mid 60's on a 13* day and had a hotel room set up for us at the Fairfield Inn in case we felt it was too cold in our house. The next day they replaced the furnace and had to cut up the old one to get it out of the basement. Travis, Russ and Jim were extremely helpful in explaining the issue and even showed us the completely corroded coils. They were in contact with us through the entire process and ensured that we were happy with the installation. The new furnace is quieter, smaller and will probably make a huge difference in our heating costs! We cannot recommend Northstar enough!

My furnace went out while I was at work. Came home to my house at 59 degrees after picking up my 3 year old. Tried everything to restart the furnace but it wouldn't. With it being below 0°F out, I was panicking. Northstar was fast to send a guy over and was able to install a new furnace the next day (our origional was about 30 years old). Very kind, professional and efficient workers. They even offered me extra space heaters to make sure we kept warm for the night. Tonight it will be -50°F and I am so thankful to have working heat. Fantastic experience I called them up on a Saturday morning. They had one of there best come and take a look. The tech was very kind he even went out of his way to show me what was actually malfunctioning with his little camera. Now I have my new furnace coming in monday and they even barrowed me some heaters. If your having any issues dont hesitate to call you'll have your problems taken care of in no time at all and you'll feel that they actually cared, the tech went as far to wear protective bootie covers and that totally matters to me. ALL N ALL DONT HESITATE TO CALL!

We knew when purchasing this 70's split level in Esko that the entire HVAC system had to go. Original oil furnace, 20 year old water heater, trashed A/C. Travis and the guys did the works - super high efficiency furnace, 2 stage heat pump, extra filtration, air exchanger, UV light virus killer, thermostats, LP lines, everything. Hauled off all the old stuff too, including the oil tank. In just a day and a half. Payoff for everything will be in under 5 years. These aren't "handymen" winging it, I watched them in my basement adjust the operation of my system (furnace and heat pump communicating via Bluetooth, crazy) to get the best performance for the dimensions of my house with a diagnostic computer. Highly recommend, and I don't write reviews. *Travis even checked on our house over Thanksgiving weekend 5 days prior to installing the new HVAC to make sure we still had heat while we were 600 miles away. Really? Now, THAT'S customer service Holmes.

North Star Heating is amazing. It was 9pm at night, the temperature had dropped to -25 with a 20mph wind and my boiler stopped working at a duplex that I have. The temperature in the property quickly dropped below 50 degrees. North Star had someone to the property by 930 and everything was up and running by 10pm. Disaster averted!! The other 3 companies I called didn't even answer their phone.

Worst service I have ever experienced from a furnace company. They stopped by and partially completed their work. I was told they would return and finish with the correct part the next week, and they did not. I have called over a dozen times, talking with the technician and he still has not returned. I have also called the manager and he does not answer his phone or return calls ( it has been 6 weeks now...). The initial technician was very green and could not answer my questions on a simple boiler system. I will never use again. Update: After 6 weeks, the owner did get in contact with me. The technician that initially serviced our boiler was let go, and a senior technician completed the work, answered all questions, and stayed until we were satisfied with operation of the boiler. They also gave us a warranty and discounted any future work.
