I’ve just moved into the area and have been looking for a walkable barber. My first ever visit to James Irving was a recent appointment with Imani. The service was excellent and I felt like she took care to ensure I left looking exactly the way I wanted. While the premium experience does command a premium price over chain competition, I do get the impression that the business is operated with the needs of both the customer and staff in mind. While a good haircut is a deceptively personal experience and James Irving may or may not be that for you, I can testify they are a well run establishment that delivers great service without getting caught up with their fully booked schedules! I will happily give them my business moving forward!

Great place to have a decent haircut. Stylists are experienced and willing to talk through and work toward the desired hairstyle customers want to have. I've been working with Daniel for my haircut for past 2 years and It's been great experience. He's professional, detailed and patient to deal with your hair and loving to chat with you during the entire time to address your needs. And I love the result he has provided to me every time. So far I did not ask any other stylists to do my haircut but for these many years I've visited to the store I'd say any of them is a great choice for your haircut.

Great place for a men's haircut. I've never had a bad haircut here and the staff is very friendly and the environment is really open and fun. Solest just cut my hair and waxed my brows and I couldn't be happier. She took her time and did a fantastic job. I also have seen Tina and the same review for her as well. Amanda, the owner, is very friendly and always there which is cool to see her cutting hair as well. Overall you can't go wrong getting your hair done, buying great products, brow wax, or just a trim here they do a really great job.

James Irving Grooming is without a doubt the best men's grooming place I have ever been to. The staff are experienced and fun, each in their own delightful way. They take their safety measures very seriously, have a great app to better manage your appointments, a manageable but not overwhelming number of useful grooming products, and a delightfully sassy newsletter. Seriously, sign up for it via their website right now. They are worth supporting especially now during the pandemic and are also worth making them your regulars once things are better, and stopping in early to enjoy a coffee or beer before your appointment is just the ticket.

Returned here after a two-year hiatus; my job schedule had made it difficult for me to come in. I remember the haircuts as being excellent, and my return did not disappoint. The haircuts I have gotten here (I have been cut by three stylists, including the owner) are the best I have gotten in the Twin Cities. Service is always great. Yes, you can certainly get a cheaper cut — but I think that you get what you pay for, and the cuts here are definitely worth the price. It seems to me that almost all of their business consists of male white collar workers downtown (I’m firmly in this category). That’s what they’re used to, and they service that category extremely well. If you’re a professional man looking for a smart cut, I absolutely recommend them.

Solest Devers is an OUTSTANDING stylist. My hair is notoriously thick and hard to deal with. Many a stylist have tried and failed to tame the wild beast that seethes atop my brain. She, with her expert intuition, has killed the game since day one. So much so, that I followed her to Allen Ray Salon. Her work puts the swagger in my step. I LOVE going to Allen Ray. Every hair appointment is like a mini spa day - I get a complementary beverage, massage, and facial! Both staff and clients are absolutely wonderful. Amanda and Natalie run a fantastic business. The prices are reasonable and the service is first class.

I've been going to Allen Ray for the last 3 years, since I was 26. During that time I've intermittently tried other places, including other high end men's salons in town. They don't compare. I've never walked out with a bad haircut, or even an average one. I visited this salon on a recommendation from a co-worker. I arrived for my appointment with Jean Fugleberg, who set me up with a drink. For a bargain price I was treated to a massage of my shoulders and head. As for an experience, this salon is the best I have ever been to and better than I would have imagined. For the hair cut itself Jean helped me style and cut it in a way I had not considered possible. She explained with a deep passion and knowledge the different products and set me up with exactly what I needed (after a month of use great result). Altogether, everything from my first step in this salon was top notch in all categories, and I highly recommend Allen Ray Salon.

I walked in looking like Beethoven and walked out looking like a Brooks Brothers model. This place is no McHair cutting place. They pay attention to detail, take the time that's necessary and have a great deal of experience cutting mens hair. This is a welcome change from other places I have been. My stylist even consulted the opinion of another. They all really wanted to do it right. Yes, I was asked if I wanted a beverage, yes I loved the hot towel, yes the neck/back massage was great and yes I got the rinse after the final cutting. love it!!! i came in not know what i wanted but i wanted a change. my hair was down to the middle of my back and i came in there and they offered me a drink. I've been to other places and never got offered that...that surprised me right away then the stylist solest cut my hair from a picture i picked out and i was so surprised on how awesome my new short hair was then i wanted some color and a stylist i knew a little bit wanted to do it so i told her heck yea. she gave me the best burgundy purple ever. when i walked out after paying a good price my husband was wowed on my new style...thanks you all if i ever want another change in a while i will definitely be back cause you all are great from when i came in the door to schedule till the day my appointment was.

If you're looking for a spot to get a men's haircut downtown...look no further. The Allen Ray crew were extremely welcoming and made me feel like I had been going there for years. I went in for a quick haircut on my lunch break and left feeling like I met some friends for lunch, with a haircut on the side. I'd highly recommend Holly as your stylist; she is the jam. She laughs in the face of cowlicks that have been active and volatile for ~28 years...it's a daunting task but she did it with ease and a smile on. I am a value-conscious professional (value as in I am willing to pay for quality and service), and Allen Ray certainly delivers. I have been a regular at the salon (Daniel is my usual stylist) for over a year. Service is great, very professional. The salon is kept meticulously clean. The cuts I have received have been consistently perfect; my "look" sagely chosen for my needs and face. Products (Aveda brand) are top-rate. The value function is where the salon shines. One might expect any reputable place to be professional and clean. But, I have never enjoyed a more relaxing salon experience. For (very) cost-effective price, one gets a great cut, neck/shoulder massage, shampoo and scalp massage, after-cut wash, dry, beard trim, and I get (extra) a facial and arm and hand massage; all of this (minus facial) for flat cost, which also includes a free neckline and beard trim between cuts. Every time I have been in, someone has offered a free beverage of my choice (water, coffee, sometimes beer, today was LaCroix, etc). Background music is soft and in the background. In terms of pure value, I doubt there is a better salon specializing in men's cuts in the Twin Cities. This is not SuperCuts, but SuperCuts does not provide anywhere near the same level of service. Fully recommended.

Wouldn’t go anywhere else. Got my haircut with Cree this past week - looked great then and still looks good now. I’ve got curly hair to shoulder length and she was able to give me a great cut and keep the shape. My biggest upset at salons are stylists cutting too much - Cree was careful with my length, listened to what I wanted, was open to exploring what I didn’t know, and gave great advice to my hair and product. Super friendly and easy to talk to - she made the entire experience really enjoyable. It was also pretty nice reminiscing about Japan with her. The crew at Allen Ray Salon are by far one of the best set of stylists that I have yet to experience. In particular, Jean Fugleberg is such an incredibly talenteded stylist, that I see myself going to her for the remainder of the years I have left with hair. Jean is attentive to detail, asks the right questions and will not let you leave without feeling and looking your very best. I would strongly suggest and recommend that if you are looking for a new stylist, it is going to be well worth your time and money to sit in her chair! The receptionist offered my boyfriend and I complimentary beverages - water, tea, coffee, beer - both times we visited, and made us feel welcome. We both saw Drue for our haircuts, and she was amazing. Very knowledgeable, and I love how our haircuts turned out. She spends the last part of the haircut talking to you about what products are best for maintaining and styling your hair - not just their in-salon lines, but also inexpensive versions that you can buy at places like Target. The brands they do have in-house are very nice, though, if you want to go that route. PS - a great place for fellow trans folks out there who want a good haircut, but are nervous about finding a chill place to go. Cannot recommend them enough.
