The Course at Sewanee
Sewanee, Tennessee
Part 1 Holes 1-5
Warning: This is a nine hole course that can be played in many different ways. You must bring your imagination to play well here.
In 2013, Gil Hanse was brought in to renovate. He kept the original routing but definitely turned it into a must play stop. He firmed it up, reworked all the green complexes, and threw in the visual stimulation to think about all those wicked hazards.
Depending on what tee set you chose, you could be playing a par 4 or 5 on the same hole. Depending on which way the wind is blowing, it could be an uphill battle or a cakewalk. The two par 3's will give you an amazing view of the valley behind their seemingly infinity greens. Keep in mind there's a small burn(creek) on number 2 that's in play, so don't hit without contemplating what the rollout might be. Hole 4 is a twisty fun ride that might lead you to Ryan's burial bunker or a hop, skip, and a jump to the green(birdies are possible). I've seen it! Number 5 may be one of the most aesthetically pleasing par 3's of all time. It's as if Gil Hanse hand planted every weed on this hole to steal your attention. Throw in a small pond and the never-ending valley on the backside of the green, and you have all the ingredients you need.
Bring on the closing holes 6-9. They play as par 4's, and the 9th can stretch back to a Par 5. It will be key to position your tee ball to have good looks at Birdie and Par. Being out of position will have a price to pay. Number 6 slopes from right to left, the greens a visual illusion as the high side is the back left. Hole 7, possibly has the trickiest green to putt and chip around. You'll want to be dead center of the fairway if you plan to make par or better at 7. The 8th has a spectacular view off the tee. Catch the speed slot over the fairway bunker, and you're chippin' up. The closing hole is wide open, but those white stakes will creep up on the left. Don't go long on the approach to the green, or your ball could be sitting at the bar when you see it next.
The course plays host to the University of the South, which is a hidden treasure in itself. I highly recommend a trip to campus afterward(tell me there's not a secret society in play here).
The Head Pro was an absolute host, giving us many details about the facility and a handful of great stories about guests and regulars to play this 9 holer. So a great big thank you is nessacery for Matthew Daniels.

Great course to play just 45 minutes south of Murfreesboro. This course is super fun to play. Greens are immaculate. Will definitely return soon.

This might be the best golf experience I've had in a while. From Matt at the front desk to the driving range to the immaculate putting and chipping greens to the bar - and I haven't even mentioned the course yet. This Gil Hanse-refurbished 9-hole track is a complete joy, managing to hit that sweet spot so beloved of Alistair McKenzie - to be both challenging to the better player and fun for the deep amateur. Practice putting before you start. I was on the first hole, a par 5, in regulation - only to four-putt. The turf was so springy, the air so breezy and light, that I did not care one bit.

This is a top 3 course in Tennessee. Very tough, but they keep conditions in pristine shape and you get great views from the par 3s of the Middle Tennessee valley. This is an easy substitute for Sweeten's cove and I actually like this course better. Can make an easy weekend out of it stay on the mountain!
Chris Roddy
Greens so fast . Golf course is great , really good test. Tee up & have fun here.

Nice 9 hole course, in excellent condition. Limited due to Covid, range is closed.

Beautiful well maintained 9 hole golf course in middle Tennessee. We played 36 holes in one day and every 9 holes felt like a different course somehow.
Ryan Lewis
We had so much fun at the Gil Hanse designed playground. The staff were very hospitable and the food was great. Plus the views! Can’t wait to come back when it’s warm and green
James “Bill” Bolton
Great course, excellent conditions for late winter/early spring. Greens are SO FAST but read true! Wind on the day we played was incredibly hard and really effected ball flight.
The grill staff was wonderful! Friendly and the service was excellent! Can't wait to come play again!
Sam Yeager
Excellent layout with challenging holes, even the short ones. Greens are undulating bent grass in excellent shape. Combine Sewanee with a trip down the mountain to Sweetens Cove and you have 2 of the best 9’s in the country within 15 miles of each other.

Great golf course that requires you to think and use your imagination. Love it! The staff are excellent and I've always been treated exceptionally well. My favorite place to play in TN and I've played Honors, Golf club ...
Greg Stroud
This is a well maintained and beautiful course atop Monteagle. Greens and fairways are in great shape for winter and they've cleaned up all the fallen leaves. It's a 9 hole course but uses two sets of tee boxes to allow for an 18 hole experience. It's not a flat course and the greens have a fair amount of undulation. Several holes have stunning back drops of the surrounding mountain and valleys. They do have one problem, they have not trained the deer to rake the fairway bunkers yet but they said they'd work on that.

Played the course about 3 weeks ago. Awesome 9 hole course. Separate tees to play the second 9 holes for a challenging round. Great bent grass greens. Guy in the shop was very friendly.
***One complaint is as follows: When we finished playing the first 9 holes and were turning back to #1 to play the (back) 9 from the separate tees and there are 4 groups waiting on #1 to tee off. After waiting almost 40 minutes to start back 9 took over 3 hours to to play last 9 holes. ☹
Paul Apyan
Most underrated course in the area. This course is exceptional and should be a standard for golf course design. Davey and his staff are excellent. Make sure you get a milkshake on your way out!
Mark Kaiser
It's a great 9 hole course designed by Gil Hanse. Very scenic par 3's that overlook the Cumberland plateau. Great greens, and you have to think your way around to score well.
Peggy Glassco
Went out to the overlook and shared the awesome view of the valley with friends and family.
John-Paul Morgante
Nine wonderful holes of golf. Natural design, mountaintop views, strong test.of golf. While there are only 9 holes, the tees vary so you get a bit a different hole if you play 18.
Richard Willis
A good argument can be made that this is the best 9 hole golf course in the US, certainly the best in Tennessee. Friendly, inexpensive. 18 tees add variety. Difficult from all the way back. Stay for a Double Bacon Cheeseburger and an Arnold Palmer. All are welcome.

My friends and I had the privilege to play the course yesterday and had an amazing time enjoying the layout. If you want your game tested go play this course because you'll use every club in the bag. The course's Bent grass T1/Alpha USGA greens and 419 Bermuda fairways are in awesome condition and the views on some holes are wonderful. Choose you tee combinations carefully as the first hole was very challenging. I hit my best drive and a monster one iron hybrid and managed to fine the front bunker. The par three holes 6 and 14 were my favorite as you only have a small area of fairway if you land short of the green. It's elevated and falls off on all sides protruding up in the air with an attitude of "try and hit me!" There is a dramatic view off the bluff to the valley below so take a photograph. No. 5 is a short par 4 and think twice about trying to drive it as I thought I did and ended up in a green side bunker with a tough shot to the pin. It's a Gil Hanse redesign and a MUST play course.

My wife and I have a membership at this course and play here almost every weekend. It is our favorite course in the state. Great staff, awesome new club house, beautiful views, and perfectly maintained course. Challenging, but can be forgiving. Definately recommend playing here.
Andy Brown
The course & staff are still great. But they doubled the greens fees from a year ago. ($60 to carry my own bag for 9 holes today)
Joe Larsen
The first time I played here I shot in the high 90s. Didn’t care that I wasn’t anywhere close to my handicap. It was a beautiful day, and a beautiful course. Very much worth the drive!
