Reviews of Driver Rehab Hawaii

My 93 years old mother has been vehemently refusing to stop driving. No amount of reasoning from her family or doctor could change her mind. Her physician referred us to Driver Rehab to have an independent assessment done of her cognitive, physical and driving skills. As expected my mother was found not fit to drive. My mother was not happy with the outcome but to our surprise accepted it. I believe Sandra's ability to connect with my mother and clearly communicate why she was no longer a safe driver was key to her acceptance of the outcome. Sandra treated my mother with the utmost respect, patience and compassion.

Thank you, Sandra, for being a positive influence and support in my journey to recovery and feeling whole again. After experiencing a stroke during the onset of the Covid pandemic, my world appeared confining both physically and mentally. It was a God send when my occupational therapist referred me to Driver Rehab Hawaii.
For anyone who has a disability, permanent or otherwise, working with a professional like Sandra can only uplift your spirits and confidence. Her credentials are such that her knowledge and professionalism are outstanding. BUT her greatest gift, I believe, is her wonderful people skills. In working with her, I came to admire her because not only is she good at what she does, but you come to realize that she is truly rooting for your success. For me, the most important thing about Sandra was that she made me feel that I mattered. Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

My son was injured while surfing (surfer’s myelopathy) just after receiving his drivers permit. It took him over a year to recover enough mobility to even think about driving. We found Sandra after the Social Worker at Kaiser sent us information about Driver Rehab Hawaii. She works with new drivers and seasoned driver who have had a change in their abilities. For my son, we were not sure if he would be able to drive without adaptive equipment so we had an evaluation done. If my son was unable to drive without adaptive equipment, the plan would be to have Sandra do driver training after the evaluation. Luckily, he is able to drive without special equipment and as Sandra is very busy, we decided to seek services for driver training elsewhere. Sandra helped us with all the necessary paperwork to get him on the road. The service is expensive but very thorough and Sandra was always very helpful when I had questions, even after the paperwork was done. I would highly recommend her very specialized service.

Sandra is the consummate professional, communicating clearly, patiently and thoroughly throughout both the administration of the program, and during the driver's course itself. My son suffers from mild disabilities that make it hard for him to communicate and reduces his confidence. Sandra's encouragement and direction was a boost to his outlook by a series of lessons that built upon his skill level each week and he now has specific tasks to repeat and practice. It has made him (and myself) a better driver! We highly recommend.

I highly recommend using Sandra Wataoka at Driver Rehab Hawaii if you have a parent who is in denial and their driving ability has become questionable. Sandra thoroughly explained each step of the process in detail; ensuring we fully understood the entire process and that we were comfortable with the end result no matter what the outcome. She was genuine and compassionate when she explained the details of her finding. Her report was very comprehensive and unbiased detailing my father’s driving ability.
Sandra’s background as an Occupational Therapist and the only state Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist reassurance me that my dad was in good hands. I am extremely thankful to Sandra and Driver Rehab Hawaii for the services they provide. Mahalo!

Sandra was the perfect fit for our Son; with her OT background, she understood our son’s challenges, was patient, kind, professional, and explained things to our son (and us) in a simple and direct way. I am the nervous parent and she was encouraging and educated me on our son’s strengths as a driver and pointed out habits that needed to be modified. Sandra is without judgment, has the perfect temperament to teach driving, and I am so grateful for all her support. We will continue to work with her, until our son gets his driver’s license!
Mahalo and God bless.

Back in December of 2019, I suffered a stroke that left my left side arm and leg weak, I walk with the use of a cane and have reduced function of my left leg, left arm and hand. Because of my condition, my driver’s license was suspended by my doctor.
I wasn’t allowed to take to the road for medical/liability reasons. To be able to drive again, legally, I needed to be cleared by my doctor. The doctor’s release would heavily depend on me entering and passing a driver’s rehab program. Rehab of the Pacific has a program, then, thankfully, through my OT I found out about Sandra Wataoka of Driver Rehab Hawaii, a certified Driver Education Instructor. By the time I found Sandra, I had not driven for over a year’s time. I REALLY missed the freedom and independence of being on the road and driving. Most of all I wanted the self-worth of being able to do so again as part of my recovery, but with the confidence of knowing I was also competent. I didn’t want to be a hazard to myself or anyone else. On our first meeting, Sandra explained how the driver rehab worked and the way it would go, beginning with an initial evaluation both in office, and then eventually, with a road test. Before my stroke, I had been driving for decades, but with my new limited condition, I had not been driving on the public road for a little over a year. I will admit, I was nervous. After all, just getting into the driver’s seat and adjusting it, was now a little difficult for me. It was her car, outfitted for the driver’s ed/rehab. I’ll admit never took formal Driver’s ed and had years of bad habits built up, as well. I was anxious, I wanted to pass. Sandra was calm and reassuring and still firm. She gave me confidence; I was able to calm down a bit and take in her instructions. Unfortunately, I wasn’t perfect on my road test, so I fell short of passing on my initial evaluation. Sandra Pointed out what was needed to work on and that she could help with a few rehab lessons which I quickly signed up for. After a couple Sessions, which were both on the road, with her instruction I had calmed down and improved enough to get the approval and passing grade from Sandra. It was a relief to get acknowledgment that I could be on the road safely, for myself as well as others.
I attribute my passing to her professionalism, encouragement and instruction. It was with her calm and yet with firm guidance and direction; that I am truly and forever thankful. If Your in need of this type of help, I highly recommend calling Driver Rehab Hawaii. Blessings.
Warmest Mahalo to, Sandra Wataoka

Sandra is very good with her clients, very patient and understanding. She is very thorough in the class and on the road during driving instructions. My husband had a stroke two years ago and she was able to assess that he still is able to drive safely. Thanks to Sandra, my husband will finally drive again.

Sandra Wataoka of Driver Rehab Hawaii is VERY IMPORTANT to the disabled in our community! As the only licensed Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS) in Hawai’i, the disabled NEED to be aware of her, and that she can, and will, help you! I was totally Blessed to have searched the Web and stumble upon her Website. That is HOW I personally found her.
From the beginning with her 1st email contact with me, she gave me much needed hope in attaining my Driver’s License. She was down to earth, trusting and very empathic, putting me at ease and endearing herself the FIRST time I physically met her to get assessed (if I needed special driving equipment). After being assessed (which included a very surprising driving assessment), I was informed that I really needed NO special equipment to drive. I almost immediately asked for driving sessions with Sandra. I signed up for 4 days/90 minute sessions, and although it was nerve wracking, I persevered and completed it. I was born with a congenital birth defect, and developed DDD (Degenerative Disk Disease) in my lower back, as well as anxiety throughout the years, and all my life was deathly afraid of even attempting to get my drivers license. Fear of failing even before I tried consumed me. Well, I am now 53, and with my Driver’s Permit in hand - thanks to Sandra’s patience, persistence and encouragement - am awaiting an opening to take my Road Test and finally get my Hawaii’s Drivers License!
Simply put, if you are disabled and want to gain more independence, just contact Sandra Wataoka at Driver Rehab Hawaii!
BIGGEST MAHALO from the bottom of MY heart, Sandra!

I always hesitant to learn how to drive because I’m short (4’10”) and I have a lot of fear, so when I get my driving permit, until it’s expired I still not learned how to drive. Then my friend send me a link of DriverRehabHawaii website. I went through all the info on the website, and contacted Sandra, and she immediately get back to me. Since there’s exemptions due to Covid-19, so they extended my driving permit, and Sandra make it happen for me to learn how to drive before my driving permit expired. When I meet her for the first time, she makes me feel comfortable, she teaches me from the scratch since I never drive a car before whatsoever. Sandra is so detail, patience, friendly and kind with me, she knows my potential even when I doubted myself, she encouraged me so much that I went from afraid to step on the gas to drive on freeway on my last lesson. Sandra not only teaching me how to drive, overcome my fears but also boost my confidence! Will definitely go back to learn more from Sandra after I practice and after I renew my driving permit.
