The Old Mill Tasty Shop is, and has been a staple of the Wichita community since my earliest memories (like 3 years old). They have wonderful food options, but they are most famous for their malts and desserts. When you get a malt here, they literally give you the metal mixing cup with all the extra inside (great for sharing, or hogging for yourself). If you've never been to the Old Mill Tasty Shop, you are definitely missing out on the true Wichita experience. Give it a go! Great pricing, great food, and awesome malts/shakes! This is one of my top 10 restaurant suggestions for Wichita, Kansas!

I am not from the Wichita area but when I do come down for my business trips I always make it a point to come here for lunch! The owners have huge hearts and because of that every employee working here is always insanely happy and accommodating. The toasted chicken salad club is perfectly buttery and toasty with each bite and the chef definitely know how to make a mean green salad! Their cherry limeades are fresh made and so much better than Sonic. Come here for a real cherry limeade!

First time there and our waiter Nathan was the best! He walked us through favorites and specials. We had the blue plate special Monterrey, the muffaletta sandwich with potato salad, carrot cake and a special cinnamon toast crisp shake. All of it was very good. The restaurant is great to still have the original soda counter and make shakes and malts and ice cream sundaes there. Nathan was great, very helpful, and seemed to know exactly what we would like. This is a Wichita gem.

I need to start making weekly trips to this place. The food is INCREDIBLE every time I go. Thursday is chicken fried chicken and I seriously contemplated licking the plate. It's that good. On top of it, the service is spectacular. The people who work there are always so friendly and nice. They let me have a booth even though I was alone (some places require 2+ people) and the food came out hot and fast! The automatically bring out soda refills and have a cute parking spot picnic area in front that's fun for outdoor eating. Cannot say enough good things about this place. Love Love Love.

Old Mill Tasty has THE BEST Green Chili in the entire area. I mean, it's REALLY GOOD. This is a very busy location and one can see why. The food is good, not just the green chili but everything they serve is just good. It's not a Mexican place, far from it, they have all kinds of different menu choices. Service is cheerful and they do a great job. It's NOT fancy, just an honest typical downtown lunch spot that's been around for years. Don't forget the Soda Fountain. It's got to be a hundred years old and traditional to beat the band.

I’ve been coming here since I was a little girl. While the food as always been top notch, what makes me most excited to return is the atmosphere and the staff. I can remember specifically asking to go there for ice cream as a child so I could see “the very nice lady” (Gail). This past weekend I brought my daughter for the first time to meet “the very nice lady” and we had the best dining out experience you could expect, all thanks to Gail and the rest of the staff. One of the best spots in Wichita if not all of Kansas!

Beef brisket sandwich was hard to chew due to fat. I ordered it on rye and got white bread. Carrot cake was dry not moist. Green chili was very good. I will go back and give them another chance. They got very busy after we got are food, so people like it there for a reason.

I ordered a vegetarian burrito made it vegan by no cheese and sour cream. But it would have been okay but but but the beans were spicy hot. Didn't say anything on the menu it was. I couldn't eat it but I tried. But it was too spicy. I should have left it on my plate but I took it home. I will end up throwing it away but it cost me almost 14.00 with tax. So disappointed. There should be spicy on food. I should be able to add it myself. Don't really care to go back. I hate wasting food and money let alone my time. They are only open till 3pm. So it was an effort to get there, had to park over a block away and walked in 36°to eat there. What a disappointment.

What a beautiful place! Friendly staff, they let us taste some of the sandwich fillings before choosing. The New York style sandwich is for sure a must. The shakes are awesome and the prices are fair. I cannot recommend enough.

Really brings back the old fashioned soda stations from the 50's. The root beer was phenomenal, and the Reuben was light and delicious. I'm not a fan of mustard potato salad, but theirs passed my taste test! Try it out!

My first time in Kansas on a business trip and this place was the first place I had food in. Their club sandwiches are to die for and their shakes are heavenly. The place is SO CUTE with an old town charm and the staff are super kind. Will be back!

The food, atmosphere, service, and selection of sandwiches, lunch meals, and desserts are good, but the fountain sodas leave something to be desired. I think the only non-coke products available on the menu fountain style are the root beer and cherry soda, which is a shame since this place gets so much love for their soda. It would be nice to see a more eclectic choice of sodas that aren't as easy to find at every other restaurant in the city.

Great food. Great service. If you haven't tried their NY Chicken Salad Sandwich then that is one to have on your visit. Delicious but a little expensive. $40 for two with tip, both had sandwiches and one had a float, other a water. It was packed. We will still go back from time to time because it is really good sandwiches. I want to try the burrito but always get my go to, NYCSS.

Stopped here as me and my 5 year old were headed to train museum. It was good choice. My club was great, chips were so so but I didn't care, my son who is a super picky eater had a pb&j (yes it's on the menu which he was absolutely ecstatic about). We sat at the bar and We watched the staff make soda and tried the rootbeer. Staff was amazing and super friendly. We came back after the museum and had some ice cream. Same server as before. Chatted with him about our vacation a bit. Place was busy busy busy both times we stopped in. Amazing to see a locally owned business that busy on an off lunch time. Plan on stopping here every year.

Went for my grandmas Birthday and we were not disappointed. The only slight thing is we ordered chips and salsa and asked to have it before our meal, and got it about 3 mins before she brought our sandwiches... Cant wait to return though! P.S. ended it with a chocolate malt shake AMAZING!!!

Old Mill Tasty Shop is a favorite of mine! This restaurant has so many excellent entries that are family favorites: Green Chili Soup is amazing, The Loaded Nachos always ordered by Mom, Chicken Salad Sandwich was Grandma's favorite, The Chicken Fried Chicken is divine. Carrot Cake and several forks is a must. You absolutely need to try a Chocolate Malt. We love everything about having a meal with people we love at Old Mill Tasty Shop. Hope you will too.

My all time favorite place for a malt. Bunch of flavors that you can mix and match. Strawberry malt was nice and fresh (I hate it when the strawberry is artificial-syrupy tasting). Love the old soda fountain atmosphere. If I had to gripe, their hours are limited

Great place for a quick, affordable and tasty lunch or snack in downtown Wichita. Has a good small town, retro feel without trying too hard. The last time I went I actually got the peanut butter, banana and honey sandwich. While it was super simple it really hit the spot. For the side I got the kettle chips which are pretty good as well.

Yesterday was my first visit to OLD Mill tasty shop and place was an amazing experience for my group. The staff was so kind and thoughtful. They ensured my extremely unsatisfied with anything 2 year old had his drink, a bowl of ice to chomp on, a d some crackers to tie him over to lunch. Thank you for your kindness. It made me feel confident enough I could finish my lunch without a large meltdown, and myself trying to gather my stuff and scurry out in a hurry when he gets upset. On another note food was great, quick, and served with a smile! Serious the waitstaff was amazing! Get some old fashioned ice cream and pop, and enjoy lunch. 😉 Thank you! Please keep it up!

If you’re ever near Wichita stop in at the Old Mill Tasty Shop. Wichita’s original soda fountain since 1932. I love old historic buildings filled with charm and this one has it for sure! I loved it 😍 I selected the chicken salad with bacon because the staff informed it was the best chicken salad ever…and they were right! 😋 I paired it with chips & a cherry limeade. All the employees were wonderful and friendly. Next time I’m in town I’m getting one of their shakes or sundaes because they looked phenomenal ! 🥪🍨🥤🍴♥️👍🏻

So I bought a bag of root beer barrels from Menards that was this candy brand. When I first opened the bag there were empty wrappers in the bag, twisted up like they were supposed to have candy in them but like they were missing. I'm doing a 3 star instead of lower because I'll still buy the candy I would just like to see them double checking to make sure there candy wrapping machine, I assume it's a machine, is working closer to a 100% effectiveness. Closer to because I know 100% for anything is unlikely. If I am wrong in assuming you guys supply to Menards I will take my review down.

Another fun experience at the Old Mill Tasty Shop. 😁 This time my daughter and I each ate one pancake while we waited on my son and his girlfriend to arrive. I’m reducing my sugar intake so I ate it plain. The pancake tasted yummy. The sweetness was just right and brought out all the flavors. I savored each bite. I will order another pancake again and again. For lunch I had my favorite bowl of green chili. I eat that almost every time I visit. what can I say? It taste delicious. Everyone who works there makes sure customers enjoy themselves while eating some of the best food in ICT. We had a great time; and a great meal.

I've been here twice now. Once, several years ago in the evening with my husband, and again just recently with my young children on a weekday at lunchtime. The first visit, it wasn't super busy, and I got Mexican food. It was OK, but not as good as a lot of Mexican I've had other places. This time, I had a reuben and salad. I was excited because their reuben didn't have any cheese (that I could tell), which, for me being sensitive to dairy, is a good thing! It meant that the sandwich was designed to taste good even without the cheese. And it wasn't drippy or super fatty and chewy like some I've had other places. My girls got a grilled cheese (which looked PERFECT with crispy cheese on the edges and thick and gooey stretchy cheese in the middle, and a pb/banana sandwich (also completely devoured). My mom got the BBQ and beans. The BBQ sandwich seemed a tad small, but the beans she said were delicious, even commenting that beans can be hit and miss, but that these were really good. The brownie for dessert was warm, but too dry on the edges. The chocolate sundae shake my mom and daughter shared was VERY good, (I did taste it, even with my dairy issue I couldn't resist just a tiny bit) and came in a tall glass with the metal shake cup with the extra also brought. The place was surprisingly busy for a Tuesday lunch, but even so the waitstaff was friendly and helpful, and the wait for food wasn't super long. Only one single bathroom though, which meant my little kids did have a bit if a wait at the end. Still, it was a good time.

Amazing soup, we tried the green Chile, KC strip and tomato bisque and all three were amazing. And this come from someone who never orders soup in a restaurant. The fudge brownie and ice cream was an excellent choice to finish off the meal. Great relaxed atmosphere even though not was a busy Saturday afternoon.

What can I say? Absolutely fantastic! Ordered a half carrot cake and had a snafu on the placement of the order (those darn sticky notes get you every time). Staff did a great job to get one done on time for the Chiefs game on Sunday. I will be back again!

First this place looks like its built in a former 50s (style) barber shop, the nachos I ordered where top ranked good. Drinks like Coke and Root Beer are poured the way they were (before) cans were made. The waitress in the bright hair works (like she is the manager of the place). She is kind and nice to all the guests. Starts the most friendly conversations, and puts the plates on almost everyone's table. My parents and I give her a thumbs up, please stop by this restaurant if you're in town!!!!

Food is usually always really good but today there was a little too much mayo in the chicken salad, it was kinda mushy and the "steak soup" wasn't steak... tasted like a vegetable beef (pot roast) type soup..definitely not bad but definitely not what I was expecting either. The service was a little slow today and we were there after the lunch rush (2pm)..but she was nice and did check on us. Hopefully it was just an off day. Still love this place. Eat local. :)

The limited hours open and it is packed usually but the staff is super friendly the food is hands down some of the best around the daily specials called blue plate specials are some of the best deals for a home cooked meal experience. Good food and great service. Shakes and Malts to die for! Breakfast menu is somewhat limited. I had a traditional breakfast with eggs and bacon. The banana bread is some of the best I have ever eaten. Served warm with butter! Who could resist? Check it out!

Sandwiches very tasty BUT the service was not great. Our waitress was probably too busy and looked irritated towards the end. We had to make an effort to catch her attention all the time. She was the only one serving tables so she might just have been overwhelmed. Regardless, a restaurant is made of food, service and atmosphere and that's the reason I am giving them a 3.

This is a busy place on a Saturday. I can see why. The red chili is excellent. Lots of meat & beans. Our sandwiches are great as well. Nice big sandwiches. The service is excellent despite how busy it is. There's a wait for a table but well worth the wait. The prices are reasonable. The decor & seating are reminiscent of a 50s diner. I highly recommend eating here. We'll be back again.

Great place for a lunch date!! Pricing is a little on the higher end, interiorly designed well! I ordered their special, chicken enchiladas with green salsa. If you don’t know what to order, I definitely recommend the chicken enchiladas!

Fantastic food and service. Not fancy, just a Wichita staple, with an old time feel. Sit at the soda fountain and get a shake or grab a booth and sit down and enjoy one of their famous New York Chicken Salad Sandwichs or daily specials. The staff is fast and friendly and always smiling. But be prepared, there us ALWAYS a wait..but it's definitely worth it. :)

Excellent food, outstanding service, and great atmosphere. I sat at the bar/soda fountain (which might explain the service) and ordered the smothered burrito. Despite being there on a Friday at lunch time, I received my food quickly. I ate every last bite and had my glass of water refilled at least two to three times -- without even needing to ask. Would definitely visit again to try a shake and some of the other delicious offerings on the menu.

To start I hate tomato soup and have never cared for tomato bisque. The server brought samples of 4 items and I now get a cup of tomato bisque every visit it is so damn good. The NY Chicken Salad everyone recommends was really bland ***READ EDIT** when I tried it. It just had no seasoning/lacked flavor. Literally some salt, pepper, and lemon juice would have made a world of difference. Wasn't dry, just disappointing. KC Strip soup wasn't anything special. The chili verde soup(?) was great. The Hot Turkey Pastrami is FANTASTIC. Smoked Turkey Breast sandwich was okay. Bread was great what was in between the bread was just nothing special for the price. The carrot cake and cheesecake are both delicious, cannot decide which is better. The baked beans are great. The atmosphere is nice and the service has been mostly consistently good. The booth seating is really uncomfortable. I am 5'5" and my feet do not comfortably touch the ground. Whatever. The bisque is too good to care about any of that. EDIT** A year later I have tried the chicken salad again and it was fantastic. My new go to is the chicken salad and tomato soup, absolutely fantastic and the 1st time I tried it was a one off. An absolute favorite in Wichita.

The best malt I have ever had in my life hands down! Stepping into this place is literally like stepping back into time. Great food, especially the Monterey on Tuesday and the Lasagna on Wednesday. I hope this place never changes a thing. Word of advice, get there early, like 11am, there is usually a wait if you walk in after noon.

A unique opportunity to eat at a historic location. The food was great and the sweets were amazing! If you have elementary aged children I suggest eating at the counter. My children loved watching them make all the sodas, shakes, and sundaes. The carrot cake alone is worth a return trip!

Good comfort food and delicious shakes. Unique historic building with a nice chill atmosphere, but can get busy at times. While some of the dishes aren’t anything special, I highly recommend the grill cheese and tomato soup!

Used to go here some when I was kid back in the 80s to get malts. Went here with my kids to get shakes and malts and the place still has an old time feel to it. The malts are not as good as I remember, but that was a long time ago. They seem a little plain and kind of pricey, but they are pretty big. I would imagine for somebody that doesn't like stuff to sweet or rich, these would be good for you. I think they also have a sugar free root beer float for those that need to avoid sugars.

Cool legitimately old-style cafe with (i think) original everything from the 30's. We went for lunch on a Monday and it was actually crowded-good sign. We had 3 different sandwiches which were all good but not great. Slightly disappointing, but the salad that came with it was better than I expected & the Ranch was amazing. We had an ice cream soda & a shake, which was nothing to write home about. So 4-stars for atmosphere, 3.5-stars for service, 3-stars for food, and 1-star for the bathroom-you had to actually walk THROUGH the working kitchen to access it! And it wasn't worth the effort. Maybe in the 30's customers didn't need to use the bathroom!? All in all-give it a try for its genuine retro vintage charm but don't expect gourmet food or top notch service. Sorry if that offends, but I'm a bit of a foodie and have been around the food block!

Walked in to a blast from the past. Sat down at the soda bar and ordered the Monday blue plate special chicken enchiladas for 8.95. Quick service...5-10 min wait for food. Looking at my food right now. Not a big plate of food. 2 enchiladas,some beans with cheese and some round corn chips. Beans were average. Enchiladas were good. I personally like them a little spicier but for a non-Mexican restaurant can't complain. The chicken inside was too dry though. Add a little heavy cream for moisture , some shredded swiss cheese inside, and some pimentoes for color, and a couple of sliced jalopenoes on top would bring it from a 7 to a 10. After the blue plate special I ordered the brownie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Brownie was cold so waitress microwaved it for me. Much better! But the ice cream was the real treat. Old fashioned homemade vanilla. Very good. Would come back. One last thing. I walked into the place at 11 and the place was half full. Nobody at the bar. When I left at 11:45 the whole place was full with about 20 people in line. Recommend early or late lunch. All in all, I give the place a thumbs up. I'll be back in the future
