BEST SANDWICH OF MY LIFE!!!!!! Very happy to write this review, especially knowing it’s their 50th year of business! When my late husband was a young boy, he would come here to get sandwiches with his parents. Back in the day they had small little tables that people could carve their names into. He did that once, but I still haven’t been able to find the table yet. He also continued to go there throughout his high school years and then, once we got together, we ate there pretty frequently. Even when we lived in Prescott, and he was working in Phoenix, he would stop by there and order four sandwiches, and then bring them home so we had some for a few days. It is by far the best sandwich I’ve ever had in my life. I say it every time I have it and it is still true to this day. Every. Single. Bite. Every time I go to Phoenix now, my Ma and I always make it a point to stop there and eat! I recommend it to all of my family and friends and people that I hardly know if they’re looking for a great sandwich shop. Trust me.

En route to eye surgery we stopped here for nourishment. A tasty sandwich for sure but we definitely weren't filled up. A light meal does hit the spot so I may suggest ordering a bit more if you're the hungry type.

This place is kinda hidden away, but they have one of the best Italian style sandwiches in the valley. It's super reasonable and the sandwiches are enormous. The bread is so good, it's well toasted and crunchy but with the right amount of softness that lets you chew it easily. There is a great historical theme based around FDR and the New Deal. I highly recommend this place the next time you're anywhere near Encanto Park or central Phoenix!

Tried the hot turkey and hot roast beef subs. Very good and lots of flavor, especially the roast beef. I've been there about five times in the last month now. No table service. Self Serve soda. Bottled beer. Maybe 15 tables inside and a few outdoor patio.

First time here, stopped in for lunch. The staff were extremely friendly. I ordered the Sicilian and it was hands down one of the best subs I've ever had. Already want to go back. Highly recommended

Absolutely love this place and most Mc Gurkee's fans have been eating there for 20+ years- it's THAT kind of good. Veggie Sub with Swiss, pepper and provolone cheese hits the spot every time. (I add a little extra lettuce to mine) Be sure to get a pickle and pepperoncinis!

Mc Gurkees not only has amazing subs and pizza, but salads and some fantastic pasta dishes as well. The prices are very reasonable. This is the type of neighborhood Italian restaurant that every big city hopes to have.

Very cute little mom n pop type restaurant I was never aware was here. Very cute patio dining area in the back. I found a menu in a file at work today and saw the Kosta’s Myzithra chicken spaghetti and had to try it. It’s pretty good, costs less than Old Spaghetti Factory and comes with garlic bread on the sesame bread they make their sandwiches with. Pretty good for less than $10! Parking IS challenging though.

Small place we stopped by on the way to Encanto park. The menu is simple but the food was amazing. Crafted expertly by the gentleman who served us we had the grilled chicken and super Sicilian sandwiches and both were great. The super Sicilian absolutely melted in my mouth as I ate it. Ever since 2004 I've been coming to Jp Mc Gurkee's Sandwich Shop, even our son loves the sandwiches! This family own sandwich shop has the best subs and I always get the turkey sub with either a side of potato salad or a bag of chips. The menu includes pasta, homemade classic pizza and salads which are delicious as well! It never disappoints I highly recommend bringing your family and friends to eat and enjoy the subs or anything from the menu!

This is a CASH ONLY restaurant! Delicious and worth it, but it's not posted anywhere. (ATM is across the corner at the Circle K) Definitely a popular local spot, with lots of traffic. We'll also be eating here frequently the month we're in town!

Ssshhhh . . . a well kept secret this little hole in the wall sub shop. This was the go to place for the best subs in town when I was in high school. 50 years later stopped in to find the same folks and still the best subs anywhere!

My husband and I have been coming here for 35 years. They have the best subs anywhere. And the Theodoropolous family -- Gus, Mary and Ted -- are the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. My only sadness comes from the fact that we moved to San Tan Valley nine years ago, and rarely get to eat there anymore! Thanks for all the decades of great food and friendship!

Tried to visit this venue, parking was not an option as they were packed. We ended up ordering delivery later that night. Our order was wrong, did not include the requested pasta dish. Had to split the famous super Sicilian sub. The sub was delicious, toasty, nice selection of meats and spices. The horiatiki salad was good. Overall impression would have been better if the order was correct.

Had the best meatball sub, I have had in years. Only complaint, well two actually was everything is charged extra, cheese, pickles, peppers all at additional charges. We were there about 20 min after they opened and the guy at the counter told us they were out of coleslaw. How do you run out if an item 20 min after opening? The sandwich was good, but after adding cheese, pickles, peppers and a very small side of potatoes salad, with a drink, my order was almost $13. Way to much for a lunch. Sadly, that will be my one and only time eating there.

Old established sandwich shop with excellent hero style sandwiches and salads. Heroes are served with toasted sesame buns, special oil sauce and a pickle. The heroes are a cut above any of the chain sandwich shops. You won't be disappointed. Cold beer, soft drinks and chips also available. Small patio available in back for outside dining. We have not had a better hero style sandwich in the valley and try to stop in whenever we are downtown. Highly recommend.

Went back again and was just as happy as last time. I got a special roast beef and it was great!!!!! the girl taking my order was so nice and the vibe makes you want to stay and eat. I also noticed they have a really nice patio out back I cant wait to enjoy when I return with the family. Also the Greek salad was also worth mentioning because its something special for sure. that this local spot has been here all these years and never fades in quality or care. I stopped here one day because I was very hungry and it was the first place in the area I saw that sounded like something I wanted. When I walked in I had an Italian sub in mind but I quickly realized this was an Italian American gem. The staff was friendly and the sub was amazing. I will definitely be trying more of their menu soon.

Their food is always good and is the sole reason I ever return. Today upon my visit there were plenty of unmasked diners in the restaurant area. The counter help who I think may be in some managerial position spend an awful lot of time talking on the phone to a supplier rather than letting me know my order was ready to take out. He was super friendly to me and everybody else which is a huge plus but they always seem like their preoccupied with something else, something other than their customer. Again, the food is really good.

We ordered a half Sicilian and full veggy. I should've ordered the full, it was soon good. We also asked about their sauces after getting the sandwiches and decided on the spicy mayo on the side. She handed us spicy mayo and their sandwich sauce to try (both delicious). I will be back.

I was pretty dissapointed in this place. I ordered a Sicilian sub and there was barely any meat on it. The sicilian is supposed to have three kinds of meat and there was maybe one kind of cheap ham. It was a little thin slice of ham and something else. Definitely not three kinds of meat. I showed the guy at the front and he said it was the sicilian and blank stared at me. Out of the hundreds of italian subs I've eaten this was near the bottom.

This has been my go-to sandwich place in Phoenix for years. Owners there every day and are so nice and friendly. Their special bread is loaded with sesame seeds which, when roasted make any of their many sandwich offerings excellent. Go once and you will be back again and again.

Awesome food. Best grinder (baked sub) I've had in Phoenix in my 25 years in the Valley. Excellent pizza... One suggestion though: expand the beer selection to be more contemporary. i.e. an IPA, a stout.. anything to be better than Moretti and Bud light!

Local gem! That Hariotiki salad dressing was out of this world. I'd gotten so used to "wood fired" pizza crusts that I thought the slightly burned flavor was an extra. No burned edges on that beauty - thin crust, evenly textured, slightly spicy sauce and just enough fresh cheese. 1. Order at the register before you sit down. 2. Gawk at the old school stuff behind the counter. 3. Take in that yeasty-smartly seasoned aroma. 4. Save your salad plate to dip the pizza bones. 5. You can thank me later. 6. Closes at 8 and closed Sundays.

We have been customers of the McGurkee's experience for years. The service and the food have always been great. Ted and his family are really good people and go out of their way to let you know how much they appreciate your business. Especially if you are a repeat customer. Because it is a small family owned/operated restaurant, sometimes the volume of customers is such that there may be a bit of a wait to actually get your order. But, it has never been excessive; plenty of time to eat our lunch and get back to the office in an hour. If you haven't been to McGurkees, we highly recommend you give it a try. Thom and Tony

If you like Turkey I recommend ordering the J.P. McGurkee, a simple sandwich with lots of flavor. It's named after Mr. McGurkee himself and if you go during the lunch rush you'll be able to meet him.
