Reviews of Philippe The Original

This place never disappoints. An icon of old L.A.
The meat is tender and juicy and hand-sliced. The sides are fantastic, especially the cole slaw, potato salad and kosher pickles.
They have a great craft beer selection, too.
A great stop before or after a Dodgers game.
Highly recommended.
2 thumbs 👍

This place was a pretty cool place. Was told this was a great place from friends I figured I’d check it out and it turned out to be good. Very interesting way to have dipped sandwiches. They dip the bread on the inside before make sandwich then that juic on the bread falls onto the meat of the sandwich. The only downside is it leaves the bread slightly soggy but it still tastes good. The sides tasted alright not the best. The people working there were super friendly and helpful as well. Not super clean by any means but it wasn’t terrible. I recommend this place if you are trying to find a quick meat sandwich.

I ordered the double dipped.. I read another review on here that they regret getting that.. the server told me most people get double dipped.. I prefer to dip my own sandwich so the “wet” instead of single and double dip ks what your looking for instead.. I just asked for sauce to dip it in.. the sauce is really hot.. sandwich was about $11.72 now.. I recommend trying once but nothing to brag about.. still good..

This place was highly raved by my friends and I took it upon myself to break my curiosity and try it for lunch….perhaps wasn’t the best choice. This place is a beloved classic for most but I just couldn’t see why, the beef sandwich was mid in flavor and it really didn’t give me the “Wow Factor” I was told. The pickled egg was honestly not for me and the chili was not hot and felt the sodium content was above normal. I’ll probably get bashed for my review but I speak with honesty, only finished half the sandwich.

Just the best as always! Not my first time at Phillipe but I’m telling you, if I want my favorite lamb dipped sandwich with a spicy mustard I know where to go 😋
Always busy, vey spacious and the staff are very professional and courteous.
Recommend, recommend, recommend 👌🏼

Very reasonable prices for Los Angeles. Potato salad on the sweet side. Tender beef thin sliced. The line moves quick. Try going at an ‘off’ time, cause this place gets real busy.

An LA icon, the French dips here are classic, no frills. We got the beef dip, double dipped and the lamb dip. Our favorite was the lamb, it had tender chunks with a great flavor. The au just was salty and beefy, we really didn't need too much. The spicy mustard was great - it packed a horseradish spice that clears the nostrils. The cole slaw was also tasty, had some sweetness, not too saucy. None of it was the best we've ever had. But it's fun to go to a place with this kind of history!

It was fantastic. I ordered the pork dip, which did not disappoint. After seeing multiple YouTube videos about this location, I decided to give it a try, and it turned out to be rather enjoyable. On the interior, the bread was moist, but on the outside, it was crispy. It was well worth the money.

What can I say, that hasn't been said? This place is the OG. Are you in LA? Then you come here. Done. I like the horse radish on the side and yes I ask for a little extra juice to dip it in and yes, it taste amazing. Everything does. The pickles. Yum! The eggs, Yum. The beets, I dont even like beets and they are great. The beef? You gotta try it.

This LA institution has been churning out French dip sandwiches for over a century. Got the classic beef dip with extra meat and a side of potato salad and it was very tender. Only USDA Prime beef is used here. It's a popular pre-Dodger game meal spot and has a free parking lot for customers. They also serve breakfast during morning hours and numerous fresh baked goods.

Really good dip sandwiches! I was told by a friend this was a must go place to eat in LA! The food was great the staff was friendly and the prices were good too! Sandwich's for less than $11 and lemonade was less than $1. They were small cups but was great for everyone!

The best!! And whether that is the nostalgia of eating here or not, I don’t know. I first came with my grand parents in law (who have passed away) and fiancé (now wife) 23 years ago. Every trip to LA can only be considered complete if we go here.
I get the same thing, lamb French dip, wet. Then I add custard or a side. I love this place.

The au jus was delicious, of course, and you have your usual cast of kooky downtown characters. I would say the pie was good, but I didn’t get enough to judge since my girlfriend ate almost all of it 😂 we got the beef on a French roll, single dipped. We even saved half a sandwich for our roommate, and it was still good. I think the coleslaw has room for improvement, but I doubt they’ve changed the recipe in 100 years so it’s all good.
Breonna Navarro
honestly the best place to get a french dipped sandwich. it’s always so good and never disappoints. they have great desserts too! fun to go during a dodger game as you’ll see a sea of dodger blue in the restaurant 💙💙 definitely worth it! …

Nice but I don't like to eat in 2nd floor.
But 1st floor is big enough and nice.
Also sandwich is so nice.
Dip twice and three times and more^^

This is definitely worth a try. I tried the lamb French dip sandwich and would recommend it. The meat was soft and tasted perfect. The staff was friendly and there was quite lot of tables available when I visited. I walked from the union Station and found it quite isolating walk at night, so would recommend visiting this place earlier during the day (unless you are visiting in a group).

There’s a long line inside of the restaurant, but we enjoyed their sandwiches. NY pastrami double dip with Jack was delicious, and Lam double dip was serious but good. You need to try at least once when you are in DTLA.

One of the oldest places in downtown Los Angeles. Everything is great here. Sandwiches (double dipped), all the sides, the chile, breakfest, etc. This place is a must when visiting LA for those who are out of towners. Only warning is to not visit this place before or after a Dodger game because it will be packed.

An American original and a family tradition. My wife's family has been connected with Philippe's for over five generations. It was serendipitous that Philippe's was so close to the train station or this tradition may have never started rolling. Her great-grandfather would eat here while on business from AZ. He would take sandwiches (no dip) back home on the train. Her grandmother later took her uncle to LA for medical treatments and brought sandwiches home to the family. For my in-laws, it was never a question whether Philippe's was on the list of places to go when they went anywhere near LA. As for me, I had my first experience literally days after I joined the family. We were on our honeymoon and my wife convinced me to go (easy sell). Now, we take our children any time we are in Socal. The tradition lives on! But what about the food...
There's a reason the tradition has been easy to perpetuate. The sandwich is simple, but effective. It's just thinly sliced roast beef on a freshly baked bun, and then dipped in au jus. You can pay for extras but it doesn't need it.
The decision: you can elect for no dip and take the au jus on the side, single dip, double dip, or wet (totally immersed). We always get the double dip. I like to add some of that signature mustard as well.
You'll also love the homemade lemonade, the pies, tapioca pudding, or other sides.
Everything about Philippe's from the ordering counter, to the impeccable throwback uniforms of the ladies behind the counter, to the sawdusted floors, to the mustard and memorabilia evokes strong feelings of nostalgia and, for us, affection and gratitude.
Thanks for being there!

It's been almost 50 years since my first bite of the famous French dipped sandwich here, seems everything is kept the same, except the prices. The sandwich still tasted as good as before, the waiting line to order seemed longer.
Patrick Woods
I stopped at this joint during my recent visit to LA. I got the lamb dip w/ potato salad, kosher spear, and tea and Broooooo it WAS SOO DELICIOUS. The au jus was super flavorful and salty while the lamb was tender and cut off the shank right before being loaded into the "crispy on the outside soggy and delicious on the inside" French roll. I got a single dip but before I leave LA I'll get a double dip for sure and this time I'll try the beef!
If you love sandwiches GET THIS ONE.
Luigi
A Los Angeles treasure. Philippe's is the home of the original French Dipped Sandwich. You have a choice of beef, lamb, pork, pastrami, ham and turkey. They will dip the bread once in the au jus, but I ask for a double dip. They are famous also for their devilled eggs and their hot mustard. It's old time Los Angeles inside. Wooden tables, wooden phonebooths, and sawdust on the floor. Just a neat place to visit and enjoy the food.

Best breakfast I've had in LA, old time style restaurant, family owned, one of the locals favorite. Excellent service and very tasty overall, if you happen to be in LA don't hesitate to visit this place.

If I could give 6 stars, I would. Great food. Very charming. Amazing service. Thanks for a great meal. We loved it.

Went to Philippe first time in couple years. It wasn't crowded as we went at about 345pm. Sandwiches are about $10 now. It was tasty but I have been going for years and I think it has had better flavor in the past but it could have been an off day. Philippe is an institution and has been around for 114 years.

Finally got the whole family to experience Philippe and they absolutely loved it. I gave them a menu ahead so they knew what to expect and when they walked in and saw more options everything went out the window. Lol!!! We grabbed our preferred dipped sandwiches and and sat down. I waited for them to try it first but the table went silent completely. That was my que... Looked up and they was getting down. All I heard was "umms", "yums", and "this is really good". Even my most picky eater was like oh yeah we're coming back! Needless to say we were in great company and some serious deliciousness. Had to share one of my favorite pastime hideouts with my nephews. Of course great eats and awesome staff. It's a busy spot. They are getting it done. Can't beat tradition at the Original!!! 🔥🔥🔥

Honestly, didn’t love the beef French single dip. It was warm and didn’t have any real flavor. I’d recommend Arby’s over this place. It’s a staple in LA, but I didn’t enjoy it ): I don’t know what the hype is!
Keith Hickam
I might have given it 5 stars if I had ordered the beef dip wet instead of double dip. There is no bowl of aus jus for self dipping. I didn't understand this untl after ordering. Wet would have been what I'm used to and let me compare apples to apples.
The beef was of excellent quality and I loved the side of chili too. The extra salt and flavor of wet could have pushed it to the top of the list for French dip sandwiches, but until I try it wet I'll still have to give Redding's The Hearth Cafe the edge for now.
Shawn Shepherd
This is an iconic LA eatery and the home of the French Dip sandwich.
The sandwiches are pretty good....but on this particular visit, I would just say good...not great (French rolls, beef and double-dipped).
The environment is relaxed (sawdust scattered on the floor) and picnic style tables. Lots of neon signs and nods to the Dodgers.
Will be back for the breakfast menu (and probably a separate visit just for dessert)!

Mid at Best!
I love French Dips and was incredibly excited to try out the Original French Dip. I ordered the standard Beef Dip with Potato Salad and Au jus on the side. The dip was underwhelming, it doesn’t burst with any flavors and is mid at best. The bread isn’t great and the cheese isn’t as flavorful as I would have liked. The Au jus was also lacking any deep beefy flavor and was a little watered downed. Definitely have had better French dips from other establishment. Also, where the hell are the caramelized onions? Every other establishment that I have had a French dip at has had some sort of onions in their beef dip. If you are in the area and there is minimal wait it is definitely worth a try but not worth long lines or a drive out here if your not a local.

25 years ago was our last time at Phillipe's. So a visit to Socal required a trip to Phillipe's for a wonderful French dip sandwich. We were not disappointed. It was a drive for Huntington Beach but we'll worth it. Near Olvera street so we had to stop there too. But Phillipe's was the real reason to visit downtown LA.

Finally got to try this historical LA shop. French dip. I personally really like the pastrami. So satisfying. 😋 …

What a great place to be on this sad day. We lost Vin Scully today but they honor him and all the dodgers here. Great place for angelenos to eat and drink before a dodger game. Great service and lots of places to sit. They open the upstairs when it gets busy. Enjoy all the dodger bobble heads. Gift shop has some must get items. Parking is across the street with a giant mural of the lakers and dodgers.
Jenny
The dip was good. The potato and macaroni salad not so much so I would not get that again. If you like dips then for sure try it. I would go again but I’d like to try their soup and their turkey dip.
Fred Herbert
Great food - fast service. The wife got a beef dip sandwich and I had the pork dip. Delicious! Loved the dill pickles, potato salad, and soup, too.
I have nothing bad to say about this restaurant. Would love to go back if it wasn’t so far away.
Stephen Lee
One of the treasures in Los Angeles!!! If you eat there get it double dipped. If you get it to go, get the sandwiches dry with dipping sauce on the side! This place has the world's greatest cole slaw!!!!! If you have the time, make sure to eat inside the restaurant.
Ruby Silva
For years I've been wanting to eat at Phillipes. IT FINALLY HAPPENED 🙌 I was satisfied from the soft bread, dipping sauce, potatoe salad & the soft pull apart beef, yummy yummy in my tummy! I love how quickly we ordered, received our food and sat down to enjoy. There is a sauce at the table. Delicious but add lightly with caution. I wasn't aware that it had the same effect as Wasabi 🤣 my sinuses cleared. All in all I loved it and will be a returning customer 🤗

This historic place is a must visit! Double dipped beef sandwiches with a pickled egg and tapioca pudding is a must eat! Highly recommend!
Mohamed Ben-Ghaly
A historic Los Angeles landmark. I have only tried the beef dip on French and it's worth the wait in line. Tasty and savory sandwiches are their specialty here.
Asif Ahmed
Definitely the best french dip sandwich I ever had! I highly recommend this place.
Carlos Hernandez
This is a really cool historic spot in LA. We tried the French Dip of course and it did not disappoint at all. It was delicious and affordable. Can't get much better than that. It definitely made me feel like I was living another generation.
The staff was really friendly to us and the restaurant was clean and even has parking in the back.
Overall, I recommend Philippe The Original to anyone in LA looking for a cool experience at an iconic local restaurant. I wish we did a better job at maintaining these spots in my hometown.
Mark Alonzo
I love their dipped sandwiches and their sides are great too, the coleslaw they make is the best I have ever had by far. If you have room left over for pie do it! Their pie is as good as everything else that they serve, it's well worth the calories. If you have never been here you've got to try it, there is a reason why there are always people in line (don't worry the line moves very fast). The food is an experience, and I love the atmosphere it is a wonderful throwback to decades ago. Eat here and enjoy!
Magnus Hedlund
As a big fan of french dip sandwhich, I just had to go to Philippe. After eating I had only one regret, I didn’t buy more sandwhiches! 😁
A must go to if you’re on LA.
Random Defence
Historic, authentic, and in a class of its own. The food is amazingly fresh. The diner style is fun and allows you to have full control over your meal. The prices are super low, you can get a great meal for very little. The staff are super helpful and friendly. If you want classic LA, don’t look anywhere else.
Timmy Roberts
Great sandwich and some of the best potato salad I’ve had in a long time. The service was fast and friendly and the restaurant was clean.
Barry Brann
Phillippes is always good food...service from behind counter is excellent and the woman who was bussing dishes was also very friendly and doing an excellent job.
L.J. Herndon
Can't imagine how they get away with charging $14 for a pastrami sandwich that's got such a tiny little bit of meat on it... And they don't even give you a side dish with it anymore you have to pay separately for a tiny little bowl of coleslaw or potato salad. Don't even bother spending $5 for a piece of pie or cake it's literally 3 bites big. Fun atmosphere and a great place to visit if you're close to Union station but food is not nearly as good as it has been in years past And the prices are crazy now.
Charles Lee
Wow, what a treat! I haven't been for over a year, but the food and quality was just as I remembered. I ordered the lamb sandwich with Swiss cheese, "double-dipped", a side of potato salad, a side of pickled pig's feet and a soda.
The lamb was tender, save for a few dry pieces (reason for the 4 stars and not 5). The bread was perfectly soft and chewy, with enough bite but not so thick to take away from the lamb. The potato salad was solid, and helped to offset the saltiness of my lamb and the pig's feet. I wish the lamb had been a bit fattier and without the dry spots, but this isn't anything to discourage a visit!
The pig's feet was the real treat, IMO, as they give you the entire trotter (not half) for $3.95. The balance between the tart vinegar and saltiness was on-point, and it was chilled and delightfully chewy. It's the type of food best eaten alone and in the dark. 😁
Overall, I'd have given this 4.5 stars. I don't frequent all the time, but when I do have a hankering for French dip, this is one of the top spots that come immediately to mind.
Peter Green
What is there to say. Philippe is an institution in LA. Great French Dip Sandwiches. Great carver/servers. Great atmosphere. Lots of free parking. What else can you ask for. I ate between the lunch and dinner rush, so they were a little short staffed and the wait in line was a little longer than usual. But it was worth the wait. I'll be back again soon.
Wing Bro
Its fresh it's good not great. I guess I kinda expected more. I ordered the beef dip. Sandwiches are a tad small and need a little extra meat. I only ate the top half bread as it was too much bread for the amount of meat. I thought Langers was better tasting with a better portion. Would I come here again? Probably not.
M C
A must place to stop and eat if you are in LA visiting or going to go watch the dodgers play. The place is near the dodger stadium. That's what we do when we are in LA. Love this place...
Devin Meyer
I think I probably have a typical story about Philippe's. I started coming here when I was a kid, maybe 8 years old was my first time I remember visiting. As I got into high school my friends and I would see who could stand eating the most mustard. When I needed to go to the farmer's market in Hollywood on Sundays for work, I would eat lunch here afterwards almost every week. Now I'm in my 30s and I come around once or twice a month depending on whether my work brings me to the city.
I think it's one of those places you either get or you don't. It's like $10 for a beef dip, I get mine double dipped, plus a couple bucks for a pickled egg and a soda. I usually spend around $16 for lunch in the city and they actually have free parking, so all in, it's a pretty good deal.
I always sit in the train room, put about 20 small dots of mustard in my sandwich and come extremely close to reaching enlightenment. It just feels so zen to me for some reason. I think it's how little has changed in the almost 30 years I've been coming here. The biggest change is probably the fact that there is a single line now rather than a big sweaty horde pushing towards the counter. I used to always feel like I picked the wrong line before, so I welcome the change personally.
If you aren't from LA and you want to know where to get a good reasonable meal, try it out. If it's not your thing, that's fine, you probably don't like In-N-Out either.
Derek Ortega
I got the beef dip and usually it's pretty good, but today it was actually pretty bland! The hot Mustard saved it. Saw someone having a bowl of chili that looked so good I had to have a bowl myself! With onions and cheese and crackers, it was a meal by itself, so delicious and I wanted more! Next time I think I'll just go with the chili. Nice, Philippe!!
Marissa “Mari” Nicole
This is one of LA’s gems, they’ve been here longer than some of the buildings in downtown! Serving sandwiches since 1908, you have to give em a try. Today I had the turkey dip, but I’m a fan of the beef dip too! I hear the NY pastrami is one of their signatures as well and don’t forget to ask for extra dip, cause who doesn’t like soggy bread?! I also added some Swiss cheese just to add some other flavors. I snagged a pickle but I have yet to try their other sides, though they were well dug into, so I’m sure they’re just as good. Fun lunch spot, they have indoor and outdoor seating. Indoors is a cute little lunch hall style room with a snack bar on the way out in case you need something sweet to end with because their sandwiches are so savory. They even have a house mustard that comes highly suggested. Definitely enjoy this little trip to the past as it’s still counter service only and historic memorabilia all over, they still take great pride in their service to LA.
Dave Reich
Always a treat. Great roast beef sandwiches and sides. Some good wines and beers too at very reasonable prices. Just wish they offered rare or medium roast beef - it's well done only. But with the juice it's nice and moist.
Kiki Arroyo
Been coming here since in my moms womb. Food is so good. Customer service is always great. Food never changes and it is always delicious. Very nostalgic and a must-eat and enjoy for every out-of-towner. I always get the roast beef double dipped, coleslaw, and chili with no beans and cheese. All their deserts are amazing. Their lamb is delicious as well. Don't forget to buy a hot mustard to take home. 😋
Nicholas Kiehle
Great everything. My usual: Beef French Dip with cheese, Chips, 2 lemonades, and a hard boiled egg in vinegar. If I feel like having dessert, Tapioca pudding (the best I’ve ever had) and a brownie, with a glass of milk, of course.
Jason Rocha
The OG knows best! One of my all time favorite spots to eat when I'm in Los Angeles. The food The service The building makes for a perfect experience everytime... best in town. If you haven't experienced The Frenchie get yourself to Philippes! Thanks for the memories and always the great cuisine. Love ya see you soon!
Jerry Cross
Perfect place to have dinner before the Dodger game. Very easy to get from here into the Dodger Stadium parking lots. Service is always fast food is delicious prices are reasonable. We always enjoy looking at all of the Dodger memorabilia they have here
Annie LoVerde (Californiacroatian)
One of those places, you know it’s there, you’ve heard everyone say how good it is, and I’ve never stopped in and tried for myself, until today.
The line was out the door and around the corner, they have the back parking lot set up with tables. We placed our order online and took it to go.
I don’t know why I waited so long, but you shouldn’t because the sandwich was delicious and everything everyone talks about.
I went with the Original beef dip, once dipped with Jack cheese and the sweet hot mustard. The bread was still crunchy outside and slightly wet on the inside, not soggy at all.
Ronnie Yiu
The dipped beef sandwich was good, very juicy on the inside. The beef is above par but the overall experience was nice.
Néstor H Ceballos
I went there with an 88 yr old Vietnam Veteran, that I met at the VA Parking lot on Temple. He was having issues with his car 🚗, so I gave him a ride to the VA Hospital 🏥 in West LA. And on our way back to Downtown we stopped and got some pastrami sandwiches. It was awesome 😎, it's been awhile since the last time I was there at Philippe. We ordered and we had an awesome time. Thank You 💪👍💗
sean schlueter
The beef dip and lamb is great! But the pastrami is perfection with the atomic horseradish mustard!
Elvira P
I enjoyed every bite! There is a long queue during lunch time.
Kenneth Waters
If you go to LA this is a place to visit. Sawdust on the floor and long queues should not put you off. I had Beef with blue cheese dipped sandwich. If you think it sounds strange, don't knock it, give it a go. You may be surprised. Also had a side of pickled beets. I will return again in April next year. Top place to eat.
Julian Tjokrosoeharto
Heard about the this place thru friends and netflix, did not disappoint, quite a wait but understandable due to the dodgers game.
Joe Nunez
I love all their sandwiches! You can't go wrong with any choice.
Laura Lynn Lance
Wet or double dipped are my favs. Purple pickeld eggs are a fun try.
JAH shoo uh HYNZ man
There wasn't a line out front, so I had to stop for a meal. I had the classic dip sandwich which was very tasty. Their beef stew and chicken noodle soup was very tasty. I really enjoy tapioca pudding. Theirs is very tasty.
Manuel Gomez
Best roast beef sandwich in L.A. Pork, lamb are just as good too. The cheesecake to die for. The restaurant has been around since the 30's. Still has horse straw on the floor throughout the entire restaurant. Clean. And beautiful train exhibits.
Lennon Cihak
I had this for lunch today, and it was one of the best sandwiches I've had in Los Angeles. The ham and bread were splendid.
The historic atmosphere was super cool, and it was nice to see a vintage version of LA. I highly recommend this spot. I'll surely be going back.
Charles Bohe
We started our evening at Philippe the Original for their double dip French sandwiches. The sandwiches were excellent with the meat cooked perfectly. One aspect that was nice about Philippe The Original is that there was plenty of free parking, a real treat in LA. Even with the Covid precautions we were able to go in and find an empty booth at about 7PM. May be a little crowed during peak meal times. The dill pickle was excellent. The potato salad had chopped dill pickles added which created a marvelous taste.
Ric W'ke
Best lamb & Swiss on a French roll ever. Get the coleslaw and lemonade. Like every where prices are up and portions smaller. Lemonade used to be 55 cents. Now the glass is smaller and 90 cents. The small plate for coleslaw is even smaller. I have been going there since the 50's. A favorite of fans before Dodger games.
Race 4him
Been going here since I was a little kid.
My dad was a Los Angeles City Fireman 14's.
He would take me here many times.
Love the beef double dipped sandwiches, with a careful spread of their hot mustard. 🔥 If you didn't respect the mustard, it would let you know.
Brent Fowler
I'm not a local, but I think I've found a staple for every time I visit LA. Their sandwiches are the best I've had here and the horse radish is amazing. The atmosphere is also unique and everyone who sat down looked excited to eat in a way you don't find.
Faisal Habib
Normally places like this don't live up to the hype, but actually the sandwiches were really tasty. All the meats were tasty and seemed fresh. Prices are also very reasonable. Worth visiting.

World renowned sandwiches. All good. Lots of sides, desserts too. Plenty of parking. Wait in line is worth it. Never have had a problem finding a table. Recommended.
Bruce Haft
Birthday for one of my wife's cousins and would be one of my last choices. Salad and pea soup for me were better than I remember.
Other 10 members of our party all enjoyed their dip sandwiches.

My grandmother worked for Philippe's years ago and I remember her taking the bus to the union station and just walking across the street. She worked there for so long that she was able to buy and pay off her 2 houses. I miss her for she passed away in 1986. Philippe's will always be a big part of my life. Your the best
Claire Lee
Stepped back into time.
WAIT TIME: 15 min lining up on a Monday afternoon
Got the beef dip, single-dipped.
Lamb was also juicy and flavorful
Sides:
Pickled egg
Coleslaw
I liked that everything wasn’t overly salted or seasoned. Pickled egg was sour and refreshing. Coleslaw was standard and not so sweet just to my liking.
Sawdust on the floor - never seen this before and had to google it! Sawdust is highly absorbent and can quickly contain spills of water or any liquid. It is also used to absorb smells. Apparently this is a thing of the past?
Christopher Rusch
Got there near closing, bread was dry and hard, I got the lamb sandwich meat was bland and dull. I honestly expected better.
Hugo Aguas
Philippe's is an amazing place with a ton of history. They also have claim to be the inventor of the French dip sandwich, which has been contested by another LA staple institution- Cole's! Anyhow, I ordered a pastrami French dip(wet) with potato salad and a pickled egg! Whatever you do- don't deny yourself the pleasure of a pickled egg. Their potato salad was spot on and their French dip was to die for. At the mere mention of it, I can feel myself salivating. For those who enjoy an extra kick to their meals, order a small side of horseradish sauce- it'll flare up your nostril and char your taste buds, but it burns soo good! They also have a great beer and wine selection! In regards to parking, they have a large lot, and I have never had any difficulty finding a spot; the location recently opened up dine-in! They've come a long way and if you're tired travel coming in from Union Station, make the walk and have a bite. You won't regret it.
Andrea Y
Just the best basic walk-up, dine-in place I can remember. So simple, good food, and I love the train museum. Take a pic in the old wooden phone booths for a photo-Op
Nicolas “Nexus” VANGHELUWE
Excellent restaurant.
Their dip are to die for. I recommend the NY Pastrami.
pickled eggs are awesome, and not sour. Potatoes salad taste like potatoes withthe right amount of seasoning. The coleslow is great.
The mustard got some kick, so be aware, and it taste so so good.
Baked apple are very good, so his the apple pies and the lemon curd pie and the meringue on top.
Excellent and very happy.
Staff is very nice. If you are from L.A. and never went, GO ! If you are visiting, make it a stop, you won't regret.
Andrew Sandoval (LiquidAlucard)
Place was really busy but the line was fast. You order at the counter and they prep it on the spot. Tried the pastrami as well as the beef dip, beef is the way to go for sure. Their chilli was ok. I like that they constantly clean the tables as people get up to make sure they are available asap.
Luna Nguyen
My most favorite sandwich in the world. I was born and raised in Los Angeles and we would eat there once a week when the clowns/ circus had their day. We got to know them well!
Richard Cabrera
Excellent menu. Great food and atmosphere.
Being a Southern California resident for almost 60 years This is a historical establishment. Plenty of great memories eating here.
Erwin S
Love this place. I usually get at least a french dip sandwich and a pickled egg. The mustard gives you like this addicting wasabi-style burn so make sure to breathe through your mouth to ease the burn in your nose. Haha. Parking is a little hard around this area. I like the story behind the name of the sandwich, very amusing.

Our meal was very good. Would like to compliment the waitress who had a rude customer (eggs & toast). She handled the situation better than most and did not lose her composure.
Natalie Jaeger
A Los Angeles staple for over 100 years. The food is fabulous to boot. My favorite order is the beef dip with swiss and a side of the coleslaw. Don’t forget to try their famous hot mustard!
Mike Lynn
If you're living in LA and you haven't been downtown to Philippe's...your not really living.
Get the Roast Beef w/blue cheese, wet. It will totally hit the spot, trust me. You'll really have to resist getting another one to eat there, and another one to go.
Also, where else in America can you still get a good cup of coffee for 49 cents!
Update: Oct. 2022 still is AWESOME!
Ha Pham
A French dip sandwich shop. First time trying it and it was quite nice. We ordered a turkey and beef sandwich, cheese is extra cost.
The servers are really nice and friendly. There are lots of seating and extra condiments are provided on the tables.
There are multiple entrances. The whole place has a cozy American atmosphere.
Sandro Antao
Decent food. Expect a wait and line.
Dávid Molnár
This sandwich was an amazing experience! The meat and the dipped bun is so soft, it just melts in your mouth the pickles are amazing. The cucumber is crunchy and has a sharp, delicious flavour. The chicken soup was a very nice warm-up before the sandwich. Their mustard is very nice. It is spicy and has a nice flavour. One should buy a bottle of it and bring it home. It goes well with other foods as well. The interior is very nice. The wood chips on the floor, the posters, the benches, everything together gives a nice and unique atmosphere to the eating experience. The staff is very nice as well and they work quickly and efficiently.
Los Angeles
Great food and awesome service. I love the service ladies at the counter! The restrooms are immaculate, simply beautifully redone! French dipped sandwich heaven, the place like no other. Double dipped lamb is my favorite along with split pea soup. Very nice free parking! The prices have gone up like every where in LA.
A C
Nothing fancy, just great food! Free parking too which is such a perk in downtown LA! Or a quick walk from Union Station. However you get there, just go, what are you waiting for?
Carlos Barrena
Classic place. Beef dip plus banana cream pie and macaroni salad. Love it. Always great. Great friendly servers and other staff members
John E
A Los Angles institution. This is one of those places that you just have to try once, when you visit LA. I think I've seen it featured on the Food Network a while back as well. Philippe specializes in "french dipped sandwiches", of which there are several varieties. My favorite is the turkey dip. They also have a wide variety of other choices and even serve breakfast in the morning (never tried it).
I just ate there the other day after almost 20 years and it's still the same great quality as it was back then. Great place!
Edgar Espadas
Parking is not a problem, the service was good. Had the beef double dipped. Cole slaw and Beef stew. Was delicious. Prize is reasonable. Would go back and recommend.
Barry Thomas
Food was good pastrami roast beef sandwich not a lot of meat sandwich pretty small for the price I paid had a dessert everything tastes good the value was not what it should have been May revisit not quite sure
David Cho
An LA classic who is handling the pandemic as well as they can. Very specific protocols in place for distancing and separate entrance and exits to help with flow of foot traffic. They even added outside dining with security to help with any crowd control. Food is as good as I remember, but it’s been a while and the bread seems smaller but meat ratio better for it. I good trade off from my perspective. Tried the beef, lamb and pastrami to split with my GF. All delicious. Service was a little slower due to changes in the process, I think, so be prepared. Not bad, just have to go to the back for different items. All in all worth the trip to downtown LA for a taste of a classic.
Phillip V. Garcia
This is the place for a Taste of
Los Angeles History .
I'm 68 and my visit today was like my first visit when I was a little boy in the 60s .
I enjoyed my Sandwich and Pie 🥧.
Mayra Hernandez
My husband has been here a few times mostly during lunchtime. Today he recommended this as our breakfast place. I ofcourse was very much looking forward to finally try the famous Philippe The Original. I took a few minutes to look over the menu before making my decision. My husband, he went with his favorite and usual, the beef dip "single dip". A delicious and savory prime beef on a french roll dipped in their authentic "jus". I wanted a breakfast item, so went with the veggie Omelette. It was light and the veggies were perfectly cooked. I was pleasantly surprised that it had sliced cherry tomatoes. The Omelette came with potatoes and I chose white toast since we also ordered biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were pretty good. The gravy was also good, had minced sausage in it. Which ofcourse made it even more tasty. Overall I enjoyed our breakfast. The restaurant and food both did not disappoint. With so many selections, I'll be looking forward to our next time.
Lawrence Salomon
Crowded, long lines each time I go, very tasty food, if you go there I highly recommend getting two sandwiches instead of one so you don't have to go thru the long lines again going for seconds helpings or ordering to go after dining. Parking in Los Angeles is crowded so get ready to pay for the parking meters or paid parking lot, but there are a few parking spots free but further away that's if you are lucky to find an open space.
T Dugo
The best sandwich place in LA. This Gem has been the spot since my abuelos were dating back in the 50's. The pastrami is still the way to go.
Faux Toez
Always great sandwiches with amazing desserts and sides as well. Great for a bite on your own or with a friend and groups.
Robert Raymond
Portions are kinda small and everything is A-LA Cart. But the meat on my Beef Dip Sandwich was "PERFECT" and my Lamb Dip Sandwich was PERFECT!! I had to get 2 sandwichs. Tapioca Pudding was very good 👍👍 and service was good 👍👍
larry stokes
So my homie took me here for a French dip sandwich..The sign was claiming "world famous" So I ordered a pastrami on french roll...drum roll please..... AWESOMENESS!!!
The Pastrami was fresh and tasty. The service was quick and curteous. Glad we got there early, it gets packed quick. Lots of history and things to purchase there too. Bathroom was super clean which is always a good sign. Forgot to mention. Get the potato salad on the side. It's perfect. Not overboard on the Mayo, tasted excellent.
Laura Estrada
Iconic joint that does not disappoint. This last visit my party of 3 ordered a lamb dip, pork, and a beef dip. We attacked pickle spears, a pickled hard-boiled egg, potato salad, a brownie and a chocolate cake 😍 oh yeah we took our time and pigged out. Delicious …
Sandra Ramirez
I finally had the opportunity to try this place. I had I double dipped beef roast sandwich and macaroni salad. Didn't try the pickled eggs. The sandwich was AWESOME! DELICIOUS! They serve beer on tap! A #losangeles landmark.
Joseph Hoffman
Pretty damn good French Dip. Ordered the double dip, but wish I had ordered some extra au jus to dip it in for more of that flavor. The cole slaw could've used a bit more pepper, but that was an easy fix. Everything pickled was delicious, especially the beets. The custard and pie were the perfect ending to the meal.
Derek Duro
Need to try more of the menu before I give more stars... beef sandwich is good and flavorful but to small for the price, staff is very friendly and decor is really kool.

Philippe The Original
$$- Historic Delicatessen sit down restaurant that's been serving french dip sandwiches since 1908 , clean , cozy atmosphere, friendly staff.
Sandwiches : Yummy & Tasty.
Serving the original french dipped sandwiches, and breakfast.
Breakfast Served 6:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Long lines but moves fast worth the wait.
My favorite here was the lamb dip sandwich, double dip.
Also very good potato salad, And by far one of the best tasting refreshing lemonade.
Very good size and tasty breakfast served here.
Also try their biscuits and gravy.
They have a wide range of dishes, for french dip sandwiches, such as beef dip, pork dip, turkey dip, ham dip, lamb dip, pastrami dip, ask for single dip, double dip, or wet.
They do tuna salad, cheese sandwich. And made to order peanut butter and jelly, Sandwich.

Michelle Carr
Amazing old school eatery with great food for a reasonable price. The speciality is the French dip, but there are several other options, including soups and salads.
Marcel Garcia
The best & original French dipped sandwiches.
Stipe Lasić
This is the best spot to come for an authentic classic french dipped sandwich experience! I ordered the beef french 'double' dip with blue cheese. All the sides are delicious and the deserts are great too. Parking is easy in the lot across the street but be careful during rush hour. You will not be disappointed if you choose to eat here but don't be expecting a fancy sit down restaurant, more like a delicious weekend lunch spot after a sporting event. Enjoy!
teresa tsai
A must try cafe next to the China town. So delicious! The chocolate cake and the beets eggs and the French dip sandwiches.
Colby Wakeman
We have been coming here for years! While it can be busy at times the food lines move quickly and there is almost always room to e sit and eat at the tables. Most people forget about the upstairs eating area. So if it looks packed on the main floor head up! When you get there find a line. While it may seem that some move faster then others they all move about the same speed. If you have some time walk around the inside of the building and check out the pictures on the walls of various Los Angeles history.
If you come for breakfast lunch or dinner you won’t be disappointed. There are enough options that everyone in your group will find something they like! Be sure to try the French dip. It’s what Philippe’s is known for. Just be cautious with the hot mustard on tables. You might want to try a little before you smother your sandwich with it!
Yvonne Chavez
Oh my goodness what a wonderful nostalgic visit. I literally have not been here in 40 years!! (I'm only 53 ok!🤔😁😂) in any event it was wonderful. I had a pastrami dip & my hubby had the roast beef dip. Soooooo good. Staff was great considering it was crowded. I couldn't believe they had the phone booths that you can sit & close the door! Great atmosphere. If you've never been here it's a must! It has not been there just over 100 years for nothing!!!
David Aguila
A must when in LA. Simple and delicious French Dipped sandwiches. The spicy mustard is terrific, and for the daring have a little on the chocolate cake you won't regret it.
Paloma Uribe
LA original and favorite! Tasty sandwiches, sides, breakfast, drinks and desserts like pie! You order at the counters and then sit wherever you like, cafeteria style. Great high chairs available, very clean and nice restrooms too.
Khamid Bakhadirov
What an incredible place! Food is amazing, service is fast, place itself is full of history and character. Parking can be tough especially at lunch time. Absolutely worth a visit. Prices are great, food is delicious.
Karina Flores
My first time visiting and it was great! Lines moved quickly and staff was friendly. There's community seating and if you like your privacy, you can take up a booth.
Loved every bite of my NY Pastrami sandwich! It had a generous serving of pastrami and the French bread was just right. I had the dip put on the side, so I can dip top my liking. My side of potato salad was very flavorful and the lemonade was just right, not too sour or sweet.
Don't forget to get your side of little yellow peppers if you want to spice it up.
Jeff Ragan
Whether it's the original beef dip or not this sandwich is worth the drive. they have tuna salad, pork, lamb, ham and turkey although I've only ordered the beef dip. They have potato salad, macaroni salad, and coleslaw.
Their desserts are all made in-house, brownies, fruit and cream pies, cakes, icecream and tapioca pudding.
Jacque M
An iconic restaurant with tasty sandwiches. While in the Los Angeles area, this restaurant is a definite must. Double dipped sandwiches, potato salad and even pickled eggs. Yum. Don't forget the cole slaw. Have it as a side dish or pile it onto your sandwich for a special treat. For the vegetarians, try a cheese sandwich! The sawdust on the floor and the phone booths adds to retro atmosphere. A great place for lunch with friends or for out-of-towners stopping by.
Crista Huggard
This place is delicious and has a great atmosphere. The staff wears traditional diner garb and there is sawdust on the floor. The sandwiches are amazing! The side dishes and dessert are also definitely worth getting. I will go back any time I am in the area.
a t
Delicious food that provides service quick! You will need to carry your tray of food after purchasing.
The line isn't the clearest but try to read the crowd.
The location is right at the corner, you won't miss it!
For those with allergies, be mindful of the sawdust.
Plenty of parking since they have two large lots nearby.
Seating is available further into the place itself and they also have a 2nd floor to accommodate guests.
Bathrooms are located in the back after the booths.
Jenny Xu
Came here while running around downtown LA! I was surprised because you order and get your food at the same time in parallel with around 10 other customers and the food is carved out for you!
Food: I got the beef dip sandwich double dipped and with French roll. I was pleasantly surprised by how standard these ingredients were but how well it all worked together. There was a nice juicy texture and each bite had me wanting more.
Service: Nonstandard ordering where you go up to the front and ask the server to prepare your sandwich for you.
Ambiance: There’s a lot of space here to sit and it’s definitely a nice little place to chill after a long walk.
Would come back to try a different sandwich!
Xbox User
Great flavor! The bread is soft, the meat tender, the aujus is delicious. The potato salad is perfect, and the coleslaw is spot on. Everything was 5 stars, even the snap crisp of the pickles! I will come again!

Let's just be honest… There is no better sandwiche shop in all of Los Angeles!! From the house-made mustard. To the world famous French Dips. Absolutely love coming here!!! Also, absolutely the best atmosphere.

When I’m in L.A. I have to stop here. The French dip is the best. I don’t need to qualify that. They aren’t just the best in L.A, but the best anywhere. If I had a complaint, it’s that they aren’t 24-hour to fit some of the odd times I’m in the city passing through. That and the sawdust on the floor. As a traveler, the wheels on my check bag aren’t fans of the sawdust, but it adds to the nostalgia of the place.

Before the big game at Dodgers stadium or Staple Center or the show at the Music Center or Disney Concert Hall you’ll never go wrong Philippe The Original
Patty Alba
I brought my son here for lunch. We took our bounty home ( turkey, pastrami, lamb) and I don't know why, the pastrami had a plastic texture to the meat. It wasn't your typical pastrami yumminess. Warning the hot mustard will set your nose on fire! Yes, of course I kept eating it.
ExileonMain
I had heard all the hype about Philippe's The Original and being a big roast beef and brisket fan, I made a visit. I can say it was and is the most amazing Roast Beef sandwich. Get it double dipped and add cheddar cheese to it. The only thing I can say is that although they are generous with their beef portion, the sandwich could be about 50% bigger to curve your appetite. Don't wait another minute if you haven't been. Amazing sandwich.
Bill Oas
Love this place. Quality products and great staff. If you haven’t been you haven’t had a real beef dip yet!
Christopher Lord
Loved the train nostalgia. 👍🏼 The history of the place was by far the best part. The food was par. Classic experience was good. …
Adam Williams
One of the oldest and best original French dip restaurant in LA. A must visit and tase. I love the lamb sandwich with Swiss cheese.
Larry Abruzzo
The original French Dip sandwich from Los Angeles. Been going there since i a child, im 62 now. Same food , same decor, same location, same everything except the prices, which as i remember from childhood the beef sandwich was about $2.50 now $8.50 same sandwich.. same taste, but damn its worth a visit... before a Dodger game... or week night. Lunch time week day expect to wait in line...
Johnny Hoover
Was super excited to go and made the 4.5 hour drive for lunch. Great staff, had to show proof of vaccination to dine in. Had a beef and a lamb dip, pickled egg and coleslaw. The beef was great, the lamb was ok. It was worth the drive to eat at such a historic place.
Percival Gonzaga
This place is a must-go during dodger game days. I took the train coming from Pasadena and met with my friend who took the bus from El Monte and we met up at the Union Station where the complimentary Dodger Stadium shuttle was going to take us to the game. We had some time to kill and we were still pretty early. He has been here many times, and it was the first for me.
The menu is pretty simple and the line actually moves really quick. It can get crowded, but it moves fast and there is a lot of room. People that come here are pretty friendly and you can share a table with the other Dodger fans who are eating there.
I cant imagine how you would get parking at this location. There seems to be a bunch of parking lots around the area, but i'd imagine theyre pretty full most of the time and probably not open late night either since theyre gated lots. However, if you get here by bus or by train, a little 2 short block walk wont hurt. Its great seeing everyone in blue and stopping here for a snack was a good experience.
Patti Pearson
This place has a great beef dip sandwich! Flavorful and served on a delicious French roll. And if you eat in, you can enjoy the atmosphere and nostalgic decor! Good location on the edge of downtown; don't worry, they have their own parking lot.
Aneka Gopaulsingh
Had to make a stop here on my visit to L.A.... my sandwich was superb. The staff was friendly. I'll definitely be there again soon
Will
Organized and fast. We ordered to go and ate it at their parking lot. They also have outside seating under the tent. Friendly service and awesome food.
jonathan gaeta
Very nice place, well organized.
Had the opportunity to meet the owner, very very nice!
Food was amazing,
They offer a variety of French dips, breakfast, desert. And drinks
.
I tried both the NY Pastrami and Pork sandwich. Both met my expectations! Cheesecake was very soft.. overall great experience
Tom Kohnman
Oh my god i love this place.
It is soo my kind of place.
Great staff. Good parking.
Safe. Great place to eat.
Only complaint it is getting pretty pricy to chow down.
Love to dip my ham and jack in a bowl of chili straight.
I live in Las Vegas and everytime i come to L.A. i try to hit it at least once.
As of January 2020 the food in the pix was a tad over $25
Still worth going to. Maybe just not as much as used to.
When i lived in the valley (about 35 miles away) i would go here at least once a month
Joshua Williams
This is a fun LA classic that any Angeleno needs to visit at least once. At more than 100 years old, Philippe’s still attracts crowds with its delicious sandwiches (my personal favorite is the pastrami). It is particularly popular before Dodger games and the lines can get pretty long but the staff is efficient at keeping things moving so don’t be discouraged if it looks busy.
Mark Fujiwara
Haven't been here since I was 8.
Message PK
This place is a true classic and for good reason. They keep it just like it was the old days and the food is absolutely amazing starting with the beef dip.
Enough space indoors even post pandemic and obviously a mask is needed inside now with the new orders.
Sides are a must and the desserts are truly delicious especially custard and cream pies.
Sergio Zermeno
I have been coming to Philippe's since I was very young. Now I'm older I always get the double dip beef sandwich. The food at Philippe is amazing good everything is made from scratch th axs that's why Phiippe's is the best
María Mora
Go with the traditional roll and beef, double dip. Lots of space, very efficient staff and they have parking…stop by and enjoy it!
Kim H
Iconic to say the least. The roast beef is just amazing. It is a bit on the smallish side so if you have a belly like me order two. The Mexican lager is my favorite. Oh if you go during Dodger games it will get crowded so be prepared to see lines out the door on those days.
reza khodayar
Time has stopped in this restaurant! I always come to this restaurant with my guests who want to visit LA. Without any exeption they loves that. Great place, nice staff and delicious food!
Issa Khorrassany
The place definitely worth a try. The beef sandwich is their speciality and it's really good with the hot mustard. Pickled eggs was also nice. This place is like bee hive during busy hours. It definitely worth a visit. One of the oldest shops in LA.
David Aguirre
If you want or expect you food to look like a piece of art then this place isn't for you. If you want simple food done right every time then this is a must for you. I have been coming to this place for about 32 years and it has taste the same every single time. I love this place!
Shawn Moe
Loved the beef dip and lemon marine pie. Will definitely be back to try something else. If the Dodgers are playing make sure you have a 15- 20 mins hour to wait in line.
Jonah Morris
Excellent old school deli spot to rival any others throughout all of LA and even Southern California as a whole. I do wish it was less expensive though. I order a French dip, pickled egg, and slice of banana cream pie and was still hungry afterwards. I could have eaten 2-3 french dip sandwiches in the one sitting!
luis silva
This place has good sandwiches, I like the pastrami and chilli. Highly recommend.
Kevin Buckley
Highly recommended. Although I usually avoid blue cheese, I have a strict rule of accepting the advice of the people from whom I am buying food. When the lady suggested the crumbly oddity for my lamb dip, I hesitated for a brief moment before agreeing. As is usually the case in these situations, the employee was right. The blue cheese goes very well with the perfect lamb sitting atop the soggy roll. For those who enjoy drinks other than water with their food, the prices for hot tea, coffee, iced tea or lemonade are ridiculously cheap. Another important thing to mention is that they use quality paper napkins. More often than not, I find similar eateries using what amounts to tissue paper for napkins. I'm sure there are a few of you out there that can appreciate this fact about Philippe, as I do.
Gregg Towsley
Philippe's is a special place. I have been going here since I moved to LA. There have been so many memories. I have had deep conversations, celebrations, and closed deals at this place. It will always be a staple and a place of fond memories. I enjoy every trip and time spent at Philippe The Original.
christopher paprocki
This place is a must, simply a must. The beef sandwich reminded me of how my Grandpa used to make roast beef. The mustard sauce (with a little kick of horseradish) is the perfect compliment to the french dip sandwiches. Finish you order with a dill pickle and one of their many desserts.
Also, great place to head to before a Dodger game!!!
carla
Delicious and iconic staple Los Angeles eatery. Ordered the steak french dip sandwich, and extra meat on the side lamb and pastrami. Sides potato salad and coleslaw, beer and Arnold Palmer. Really enjoyed the lamb that was carved off the leg and pastrami which was delicious with the spicy horseradish mustard. Juice served on side perfect for dipping meat into.
Conrad ME
It's good. Portions are small probably 2 sandwiches per person would be best. Also f.y.i you will need to order or request au jus to dip the French dip as one is not provided it is an additional charge.
Sam Siam
Oh my goodness it's a staple of LA. PLENTY of parking around this part of China Town. Don't sleep on the chili it's super tasty. One of my favorite sandwiches is the lamb... LA wouldn't be the same without this soul filling place with kind and loving service. I just wish they refilled their ice tea :(
john kim
From New Jersey. Whenever I am in LA, stopping at Philippe’s for a beef dip sandwich, double dipped is a must. Also am a fan of their macaroni salad along with their lemonade which is still $1. Staff are wonderfully pleasant and they all move like a well-oiled machine when handling long lines. There’s a reason why this place is so famous and stays as busy as it is.
Jeff Daly
You know it's great when you see a police, fire and EMT personnel all eating. The history of the French Dip sandwich is definitely honored here. It's also not as crazy expensive as I imagined it might be. I'll be back!
Landy Lin
My first French dip and it was amazing! The banana cream pie was awesome too. They can get busy but service is pretty fast.
Julia Jacobs
What a great place! We stopped in for dinner before a Dodgers game. Delicious sandwiches, deli salads, and pie for reasonable prices. Reminds me of Chicago delis.
Miley Yu
Sandwich is ok tbh. Small and not really cheap besides the sides. Tuna is better than beef in my opinion. Just an old and original restaurant. Try one time sure but second time no thank you.
CG Cruz
NOSTALGIC! That's what comes to mind when I come to this place. This place is an L.A. landmark. The dipped sandwiches are their staple. I get the lamb sandwich, double dipped, with a side of pickled beets and pickled hard boiled eggs. But they have many other options, not to mention their homemade desserts. I never regret stopping by. If I'm within a 30 mile radius I'll drive to it. Going to the Dodger game? Make it a tradition, and stop here to grab a bite. The place is buzzing with excitement. Staff is friendly and upbeat, not to mention the cute hostesses. But this place takes you back to a better place. Parking is great, and nice views of the Los Angeles area. This is a must for anyone visiting us from out of town. Make yourself a favor, and stop by. Pics below to make your mouth water. Enjoy when you go.
Catsi Catalan
Preserved its name as an old-fashioned diner in Chinatown. The taste pays tribute to its legacy. Original beef french dip sandwich did not disappoint and the Pastrami is just as good. It is surprisingly affordable. Location is accessible and just a walk away from the Train station.
R. Shumway
This place has been here for over a century! I grew up coming here with my family. 30 years ago they use to give bowls of peanuts and said, ""the shells you can just toss on the floor."" So, we did 😂 …
Natsuko Konishi
They have a large menu, but I think most first timers try the dipped beef. Everything is super affordable (for LA). Make sure to order some pickles to go with your sandwich!
Sal Pamiza
Been visiting this great establishment for over 50 years. I now live in Las Vegas but make it a point to stop by here and enjoy their famous beef dip sandwiches and sides. Nothing has changed except the quantities and prices.
ismael magallanes
It’s a dip to LA’s past, another of Los Angeles famous landmarks, famous for their French dip sandwich I personally like the lamb double dip with extra meat and cheese sandwich
bryan hover
Had a great lunch here. Went with a double dip pastrami sandwich, as well as a pickle. Great value and great taste. I didn't have any dessert but they had a lot of options.
I can't wait to go back.
J J
One of my favorite places.
Coming here for 30+ years.
The wannabe food critic reviews recently are hilarious. First timers. They don't know what classic good food is. Had to give a quick one of my own.

Delicious sandwiches, potatoe salad, cold slaw, awesome ice tea. All the food was tasty. Employees attentive, professional & polite. Plenty of seating. Historical pictures of Downtown L.A. Easy going atmosphere.
mae castro
My favorites are the beef with cheddar single dip sandwich, cream of broccoli soup, potato salad, coleslaw, tapioca, banana cream and pecan pie. The customer service was wonderful also! 😄 …
Patricia Wirtz
Delicious! A treat As usual!
Grew up here, Phillipe's was a regular haunt. French Dips so good you lick the plate! Fantastic sides like macaroni salad or potato salad so good your mom is jealous.
Fresh squeezed lemonade, sweet treats such as brownies, pie slices, Olde tyme candies!
Sawdust on the floor gives the memories of yesteryear.
Ralph Gambina
Probably the best place to eat in Los Angeles the first time I came to Philippe's was with my great-grandfather and I've eaten there with my grandchildren. The food is still wonderful only now it costs an arm and a leg.
Dave F.
They are well set up for take-out and for outdoor dining behind the building! You don't have to wait for a vaccine to get your Philippe's fix!! 👍👍 …
Kory Kappel
Beef dip sandwich was a bit underwhelming. The cheese wasn't melted and the sandwich could have been served warmer. Great service, though. And great carrot cake.
George Bennion
Good sandwiches, nice open atmosphere! Can be crowded at mealtimes, but roomy enough for everyone. I only wish they gave me more dipping sauce!
Cherrie
What's not to love, this place is an institution - has been around forever, along with a lot of long-time staff, so you always see a familiar face to order from =).
Pro-tips:
If you are entering from the parking lot side and come down the stairs, don't feel the need to line up right there -- there are multiple lines, one in front of each cashier along the counter, so feel free to spread out!
Beef with American cheese is the best sandwich imho, and ask for extra jus for dunking 😄
If you've never had the spicy mustard, be careful, a little goes a loooong way (but do try it, it's delicious, and you can even buy a bottle of it to take home)
There is plenty of seating around the corner from the food counter, so you don't have to worry about finding a seat right in the immediate counter area
Justin Van Horne
Between the energy, the price, and the quality of ingredients you would be a fool to skip this place. It's a gem and worth the stop and wait. Go for the double dip beef on french with some cheddar and you won't be disappointed the slightest. The slaw was nice and vinegary. It all went down smoothly with some $.80 ice tea.
Kenny Chan
I haven’t been here for a while. My uncle used to bring me here for lunch when I was a kid. The double dip beef, potato salad, and a glass of lemon ice tea brought back memories. Life is good!
Tom Cruz
This place is one in a few I like the sandwich and the ice cream so much it tasted much better than a jersey Mike shop or a Subway shop not nowhere near comparison. Overall they're signature sandwich are amazing. The employee and the restaurant itself was outstanding the Sawdust felt like I was in a Texas BBQ pit, tables always clean, employee are very kind and interactive.
Sarah LaBrada
Food hasn't changed since the ’50s, says my Gran, and I’d believe it. It hasn't changed in the 30 years I've been going to Philippe. Beef double dip and tapioca pudding makes a happy belly.
Danny Gonzalez
Claim to be the originators of the French Dip. If so, then I’m surprised it caught on. The sandwiches we bought were all cold. It reminded me of a sloppy sandwich you would get at grade school. The service was slow and horrible. The lady who helped us, who extremely rude, and I felt she disrespected my dad. He asked for a slice of pie, and before he could say what kind, she barked at him, “what kind?!”. My dad said, “Pie... apple”. She turned around and responded with, “Its called apple pie, not pie apple.”
For 3 sandwiches, 2 pies and 2 salads it took her over 5 minutes.
The pie was amazing, and that’s the only reason I give this place a 3. I think it’s still in business because of the nostalgia and tourist that come here. I took the bait, never again. Walking distance from grand central and Olvera Street.
Peter Umbrell
Great location with lots of long tables and booths. Order at the counter and take your food to a table. Super close to union station.
Tasty Beef dip, potato salad, dill pickles and a soda $16.21 w tax
Yummy! Pastrami was very good.
Shaun “KAMIKAZE” Kimura
I had the lamb double dip with swiss. So good added a pickle and a pickled egg... I didn't like the egg as it picked in beet juice not dull brine but that my own taste so I'm not knocking them for that. The lamb was moist and had very little gamey taste. I will be back to try my favorite pastrami one day.
Laura Pickett
I've been eating here for almost 50 years and they have the best French dip sandwiches hands down. Hasn't changed a bit, but I do miss the sawdust on the floor.
Ibrahim Saada
I had a beef French dip; overall it was okay. I wouldn't rush to go back. Bread wasn't fresh. Meat was nice. Macaroni salad tasted alright. There were no stand out flavours in any of the dishes.
Jerrold Garrard
An ICON, and a MUST-STOP.
Classic, original French dip sandwich in downtown LA. Where celebrities and the downtrodden rub elbows at communal tables with business men and tourists.
They used to be cash only, but now they accept cards and that ups the convenience.
My “go to” is the double meat, single dip, with Swiss and lots of their signature horseradish.
Dennis Truong
A great dining place in LA! Find a shortest line and line up there so you can get your foods faster. I have beef dip and don’t think it’s that good. I have had a better one elsewhere. Good dining experience and have to experience this place while you are in LA. It’s located very close to LA Union Station (5 minutes walk).
Phil G
This place has been the same ever since I can remember. Great food and service!
Rick Dorsey
Seriously, if you want authentic, throwback in time, LA eatery that not only offers a nostalgic venue and first rate food that you can't find anywhere else, drop into Philippe's and order a lamb dip with hot mustard and a side of Mac salad. Famous for their beef dip but the lamb dip is out of this world!
Mel S.
Food is always great! This place is usually busy especially when the Dodgers are in town. The lines move fast and the food is well worth the wait. I always order a beef dip wet and a baked apple. The food, desserts, and lemonade are all DELICIOUS!!!!!
walt baker
It is one of the most incredible beef did sandwiches I have ever had and it just melts in your mouth.and you cannot forget theire home made potato salad.and the hole combo is not yet complete intell you have a pickle..
Kurt Smith
AMAZING! First time ever going there. Great little place to get some delicious food and good prices before going to Dodger Stadium. Parking is sparse though.
araceli marshall
Friendly service n plenty of community tables...Dodgers fans local spot...sandwiches~pig feet~potato salad ~etc...Not a huge fan of the food but it was good n moderately priced. Block away from Olvera street.
Jake Breckner
Worth the wait in line, very busy but plenty of tables. Drinks are a bit small, so be conservative.
Simon Tygesen
Almost as original as I remember it.
French dip sandwiches are the best.
Must affordable cup of Joe on this side of the Pacific.
Donald Derouin
This place truly is a Los Angeles icon. Claims to be the birthplace of the French dip sandwich. The walls are lined with photos of Los Angeles of the past. I get the classic beef dip with a double dip. The sandwiches are so good I always get one to go with dip on the side.
Julie Schap
Long lines, but it’s old school LA dining. Wonderful ambience of a dining hall filled with some characters. Worth the trip. Worth the wait.
Kourosh Eftekharian
One of the classics in LA. Loved the tapioca.
Rita Loy
I have not been to Philippe The Original in many years. I have ordered in the past a Single Dip and Double Dip Roast Beef Sandwich. This time I ordered a Wet Roast Beef Sandwich with Macaroni Salid and I was blown away by the taste. Not only will I be back sooner I will order this again. My roommate ordered a Pastrami Sandwich with Potato Salad and he enjoyed it.He thought that the Potato Salad was as good as his sandwich.
Jessica Talamantes
Best French dip in LA
Good sides Cole slaw is bomb
Mac salad, potato salad are good. Also very very good chili.
David 'Dutch' Schultz
When you make the same tasty food for a hundred and ten years, and still in business, you know it has to be good! Old Los Angeles at its finest!
Roger Arlich Jr.
Famous Philippes Beef Dip. It was good, not great. Arby's is better !
Viv Arroyo
I've been coming here every time I come to California used to come with the family when I was a little girl it's still good
Martha Garcia
Love all the sandwiches my favorite Turkey & Beef double dipped with Swiss cheese a pickle, potato salad & don't forget the brownie, hubby's fav the lamb sandwich double dipped & a bowl of chili mmmmm
Nicole Copley
As we entered, we were greeted with the nostalgic feeling of old Los Angeles, and the aroma of roasted meat.. Mmmmm. The menu was pretty basic for lunch, mostly dipped sandwiches, with all types of meats. There was a vast array of other tasty treats including puddings, pastries and salads in the refrigerator box under the counter.
On the menu for us was the "double dipped" roast beef sandwich, dill pickles and a side of macaroni salad, and a couple of frosty IPA's on tap. We really wanted to order one of everything, but as I said, we needed room for another place near by. The sandwich was served split for us, and presented nicely with the kosher dill pickles. The macaroni salad was served as a generous helping in a side dish. The roast beef was tender, the French roll delicious, and the macaroni salad on point. And OMG the pickles ! We basically inhaled our food, it was soo delicious !
All and all, this was a great experience that will be repeated again in the future.
Juan Castillo
When in L.A. a must stop location for French dip sandwich/ beer- wine / sides & dessert. Great 1st stop before Dodger/ Lakers / King's games love LA....
Patrícia Busquí
We loved it! We got the beef french deep sandwich and the lamb one. Both delicious. We also tried the apple pie, but it was not our favorite.
Joseph Holguin
It was nice having been there in a decade took my grown children to reminisce A place I used to go with my parents the food was just as great Used to work at the Post Office across the street
J Man
It was good seen it on multiple TV shows the beef is really good melts in your mouth. The only problem I have is the portion size feel like it's too much $ what there charging for that little sandwich. But sandwich was good.
Tammy Sanchez
Every trip to L.A includes a stop here. It's a staple to all locals and I appreciate the history and Mark it's made on me. Tasty dipped sandwiches that satisfy a quick bite while you continue your ventures!
Star Dozer
Theine may be long but the wait is never too long and the food is always delicious and made in front of you! Great beef dip! The lemonade is nice too the tapioca pudding is tasty and not runny but just perfect. I always get my sandwich either double dipped or wet and with cheese, it is amazing! Love the spicy mustard! Wonderful place and great food! =)
Jay Fidelis
My second time at Phillpe's since agesss ago. Still the same down to earth cozy restaurant w friendly workers and the great sandwich that i remember. Love eating the classic beef single to double dip ( depending on how SauCy i feel🤓), w a side of cole slaw. Hits the spot! …
Joe Montoya (G. I. Joe)
Awesome French dipped (as opposed to??)roast beef sandwich! Consistently the same=Great tasting! For years. Love to come back to the neighborhood.
Jake Seegs
Wow! This lived up to the hype. Great French dipped sandwich and a well brewed cup of coffee to boot! Do put a splash of mustard on your sandwich for a kick!
CLAUDE W (Wygy)
The meat of the sandwiches are good the only thing for me is the dip it's to salty but I order it wet but you can choose single dip, double dip or wet the sandwich come with meat only nothing else you can order extras like cheese or meat the meats are beef $8,94 pork 8,95 or lamb $10.95 pastrami $10.95 ham $8,95 turkey and 8.95 they have also tuna salad $8.50, cheese $4.20 and peanut butter & jelly $4.20 sandwiches, salads and daily soups for $3,10 the cup $4.95 bowl I get Manhattan chowder because it's the soup of the day (Friday) and it's salty also and not good
glen grant
Hadn't been there since the pandemic. Wasn't disappointed a bit. 50 years of outstanding food and service!
Gino Munoz
Food was good quality will go back again.
Eric Motil
this place has a really great old school vibe. i got the beef dip and it was delicious. i'd probably order a side of dipping au jus next time
jerr cast
All the sandwiches are excellent but I think the lamb is the best in town. Toss in some purple eggs, pickles, and custard for desert along with a cup of delicious coffee that costs 46 cents. Check out the candy counter for old school favorites like Boston Baked Beans and Black Jack chewing gum.
T S
Nice atmosphere (Dodgers game on T.V.) great food on the menu (lunchtime and breakfast) We had the excellent French dip pastrami and beef. Macaroni salad, coleslaw, jalapeno, salt n vinegar chips, with a brownie!
Michael Fedor
This is a LA landmark. I've been coming here since I was a child with my parents. This time though went around dinner time and it was packed. We couldn't wait that long cause we had a show to get too. But if your in the area always stop by even if your getting it to go.
Errol Van Stralen
This is the place. Original French dip sandwiches. You won't regret the visit. Added attractions: Dodger team signed baseballs, Train collection. And real French dipped sandwiches!
Marina V
THE best French dip sandwich I have ever had!!! Delicious! Sawdust on the floor and old timey phone booths make it extra fun. You
Jeffrey Carman
Been around over 100 years there's a reason for that! Consistently good food!
Lu Simonsen
You must stop here for a beef French dip. I got it double dipped and only wish I had gotten it "wet". The horseradish sauce was an extra treat.
Carl K.
What a wonderful place! Home of the original beef dip sandwich. I've been going there for over 50 years. In fact, I'm going back again tomorrow. It has modernized and streamlined, but the sandwiches are as good as ever. Go, you don't regret it.
Robert Prideaux
Food is very good had been there since 1968 still the same great service great food readable price.
Kurt Furst
Unbelievably good French dip sandwiches. Everything was great, the staff was pleasant and jovial. I couldn't help myself and had to grab a slice of cake. What blows my mind about the quality of this meal was it was shockingly reasonable in price. I can't wait to go back. Try the table mustard on your sandwich!
Macey
The beef dips double dipped are always to die for. Yesterday I decided to try soup like I've always wanted to. In my photo is their baked potato soup. It was really good, but nothing to rave about. We did try their cheesecake and brownie, both are to rave about! Yum! I love the seat yourself environment. This place is a classic
Tina Camus
Never better. It's good to know that some places never change. Great stop before a Dodgers game or anytime.
Peter Usamanont
Reminds me a lot of Katz Deli in NYC.. You need to order 2 sandwiches. So good.!
Philipp Siemons
Good things can be so simple. And simple things so good. Take juicy meat, put it on a crunchy, slightly warm bread role, dip it (I recommend it „wet“) and you have an excellent sandwich. Round it off with the mustard. Perfect. (Except for it not being cheap, but I guess that comes at an iconic place, that delivers great food)
jeff escuadro
Always a favorite of mine. Double dip.. try it out. My pick is the pork. They also have lamb dio. Also got breakfast and lunch.. literally Brunch. Go early coz gets busy. Free parking to.
Walter Dzieman
Classic spot a Dodger game experience. Long line as it was Dodger game day, it was expected. The line moved quickly and we got the Dry french dip with cheese, chili, macaroni salad and a potato salad. The sandwich was perfect (we went extra meat...worth the money) dipping the dry sandwich in the aujus was perfect, the chili was a throwback to good old chili and the salads were good not great but decent. But the experience among the fans (we're Cubs fans in Dodger territory) was tremendous everyone was so gracious!!!
Kathy Armstrong
Traveled by train to LA . Went direct from the depot (a block away) to lunch with friends. It had been decades since I last ate here and it was as tasty as I remembered. We all had single dips- beef, pastrami, and lamb. Everyone was more than pleased. Also enjoyed your coleslaw. Everyone needs to eat at this iconic landmark at least once in their lifetime.
Luke Barbosa
Classic for a reason. Got a double dipped beef dip sandwich with jack cheese. The french roll was firm enough to suck up the au jus, yet it still had a nice fluffy texture on the inside/light crisp on the outside. The beef itself was simply seasoned (which for me was a plus because roast beef sandwiches can easily lean on the salty side), and the temperature of the sandwich allowed for the cheese to not over-melt and get too gooey/messy. Overall, the simplicity of the sandwich lends to its deliciousness. It knows what it is, and is proud of it. The vibe of this place is kind of old school, yet in that endearing way. Kinda like if you’ve been going there for years, and there is no expectation to be hip enough or fancy enough to eat there (lots of modern places give off this vibe). Overall, I definitely recommend to sandwich lovers/comfort food lovers!
Donato Cabrera
One of the great LA treasures. Prices are still incredibly affordable and the quality of the food is excellent. All of the dips are worth trying but I tend to sick with Beef dip. The salads are all worth trying but I'm partial to the potato salad. Be sure to find s booth to eat in rather than one of the open tables!
Terry Glover
The French dipped beef sandwiches are the best...double dip, then grab a piece of banana cream pie you will not be sorry.
Bobby Liu
Solid sandwich worth trying. Definitely the beef double dip. Eat fresh and don't let it sit too long. We had a 3:30 pickup but was ready at 3:45 but appreciated it being fresh.
Luis Valdez
If you havent been you should. Theres a reason its been open so long. I got the lamb dipped sandwich with a side of mac salad. The lamb was flavorful and tender. Their hot mustard is delicious just a dab will do ya. My only regret is i didnt get my sandwich wet.
Mark Dobkin
Great old LA icon. Beef dips are what to get here. A bit expensive but worth it.
Ken Mann
Try the beef stew; beef and vegetables in their natural juices - and it's $4. Try anything else and you'll love it all. Counter ordering (about 10 stations), they slice the meat you order for the famous dipped sandwiches right off the bone, dish out your sides, and handle your payment. Don't miss this.
I just had a spinach mushroom onion omelet. $9.75. with it came a half a plate of perfectly crusted hash brown potatoes, two large pieces of toast with butter and jam, a side of salsa, and a cup of coffee, amazing.
Adam Marin
I don't care which one came first, this is the best French Dip in town. If I'm being honest, the lamb is actually better than the beef. Get some of the bottles of the hot mustard on your way out. You'll want to put that s*** on everything.
alexbanu1
A must for locals and tourists. Never disappoints. Old school great food.
Najla
Ehhh... to each it's own. No flavor but very friendly service. Seems to be a place loved by many.
Angelo Gambina
Best sandwiches, best location, beat history. Love this institution of greatness, and always a stop when I hit downtown!
Jeff Schmidt
What a great experience and a fantastic lunch.... Looking forward to visiting again when in the Southland. A step back in time 🐻 …
Leana Silva
Worth the wait, trust me! This is the best beef dip in the city for the price hands down!
Meme Nisimo
Classic DTLA eatery. Been coming here since my dad brought me 50 years ago. Home of the French Dip Sandwich 🥪. …
Shannon Miller
This place is an LA Landmark known for it's amazing French Dip sandwiches. They also happen to be a terrific place to grab breakfast while in Downtown. There is free parking, great staff and a fun atmosphere. The place is full of amazing Los Angeles vintage photos and memrobilia.
Julián Amores
I ordered beef dip with bleu cheese, a slice of cheesecake as dessert and a lemonade to drink. The sándwich was amazing!
I went at 2:30pm and there were about 15 people in the row but i advanced quickly.
The place is so good, i really liked it. What i paid was:
1 beef double dip, bleu cheese $10.75
1 lemonade $0.90
1 cheesecake $3.95
Tax $1.48
Total $17.08
Junie S
The breakfast is really good here — I got eggs, bacon, pancakes, biscuits, and hash browns. They serve alcohol early in the am too for night shifters lol. Have yet to try the actual famous sandwiches.
Linh Bui
Cute whole in the wall. This is where the morning crew is at. The French dip is delicious, melts in your mouth. A must try. The service is wonderful a locals hit.
Fred Van Allen Realtor, First Team Real Estate CHRISTIE'S
First went there in 1963...still the same, still just as good.
BD Hodge
Always a great meal. I like that they finally changed the lines after 800 years! It's easier to get in and out of there faster. It always used to suck that you'd watch every other line move faster than yours because you got behind someone ordering 20 sandwiches for a Dodgers game.
Anita Garcia
Very tasty beef dip, macaroni salad, pickle & iced tea. Great service by all team members. Everyone has discovered the iconic telephone both. I had Diet Coke and boysenberry pie this visit.
John Nickolsen
My my grandpa and dad brought my brother and I here when we were just little kids. That was over sixty years ago. We both kept that tradition going our entire lives by bringing family and friends here. Sadly, my wife and brother have passed away. But I have another grandson on the way, and God willing, I'll be around to bring him here too. P.S., I always buy the lamb double-dipped with nothing on it, and slather some of Philippe's mustard on it.
Irene Pena
Such a satisfying meal, turkey dip with generous slathering of Phillipes mustard and a side of fresh crisp coleslaw. Only at Phillipes. Yummmmmerz
Alan Wayne
Absolute icon for a reason. They invited the French dip and at the same time perfected it. The world is better for their sandwich creation.
Bekahs just Sayin
Absolutely hands down best French dip and in my opinion the best sandwich period. The meats are super moist and tender and full of flavor. All the sides and desserts are fantastic as well. I've never had anything there that wasn't good. I have to eat there every time I go to LA.
Kelly B
Everything was excellent! Pastrami on Rye, Pastrami on French, and Lamb on French single dip.
If you ask for single dip, they dip the inside of the bread and it is EXCELLENT.
Tracey Kounanis
we stopped in for a quick bite before concert @ greek theatre... 2 beef dips, 1 pastrami, pickles, coleslaw, macaroni + potato salad, 2 lemonades, 2 coffees, carrot cake, berry pie and a brownie! P. S. 💙 your mustard! …
Craig Collins
A classic old-school Los Angeles restaurant with beef dip sandwiches, great pies, potato salad and macaroni salad.
Ray Rodriguez
An nostalgic establishment. $$ Philippe's classic french dip roast beef sandwich with a side of Cole slaw , potato salad or macaroni salad is always Good! I'm fact the menu at this place is all Good! Staff is friendly and attentive, indoor line wait depends on crowd 0-15 minutes but moves fast. Dining area enough seating for singles , couples & groups. Plenty of parking spaces. Close nearby L A Union Station on Alameda & Ord St.
Lis Weller
My trip with a fellow salesperson lead to lunch at this iconic venue, stand in line and order a la carte then sit at communal tables on short stools (reminded me of grade school) but the sandwiches were awesome as was the cole slaw, pickle and lemonade (wish I had room for dessert). There were two other highlights, the varied customers were not only sharing tables but talking to each other (not all on their phones) and the bathroom was outstanding (light, clean and stylish).
Nicole Doucette
Food was really good just like I remember it being as a kid . My kids really enjoyed the atmosphere and the food !
J P
A Los Angeles icon with consistent, fast and quality food.
Joshua Lewie
Absolutely fantastic! Great food, great service, and very decently priced. Definitely a place that's a "diamond in the rough".
R. A. Contreras , MA
Still the same! Excellent French-dipped sandwiches. Ordered the beef dip and macaroni salad. Salad too sweet for my taste; still decent to eat however! What to try when I return...
Anahata V.
My first time but definitely not the last. The food was magnificent and the service was great! I had the Lamb Dip "Wet" with a side of Potato Salad.❤️
Banzai Z
Great food and experience but the long lines and my 1hr drive was not worth it.
As for the food 8/10.
nithin george
3 stars for the history and deserts , I am not a fan of those sandwiches, might be because of my taste preferences, I felt the sandwich blunt . Nevertheless, it was busy and a landmark.. try out once . The stew if good and filling
Meng Yang Ng
A local institution for the French dipped sandwich, and the beef stew is hearty and comforting. Service was super friendly and would definitely recommend visiting.
Tony Jewell
Like Cielito Lindo around the corner, this is another LA institution, dating back to 1908. But I'm not from LA, I haven't been eating here since I was a kid, and I don't have the rose tint of nostalgia. The signature sandwich - well, It's a good beef sandwich - much improved by adding the mustard. You're eating history as much as you're eating a sandwich.
Wayne Smith
I am super pleased with how Philippe's has adjusted to continue operations during this pandemic. I haven't been since prior, just because I figure it wouldn't be that good by the time I got home. I decided to swing by as I was in the area, and to my surprise, they had an outdoor seating area! Thank you Philippe's, glad to have gotten food that I've been craving!
Amy Johnson
This is a must stop when we visit LA. I love the double dipped pork with Swiss. And lots of pickles and a lemonade. You will not regret it
Stephen O'Bryan
Tasty goodness. Phillippe's is a Los Angeles treasure. I like the single dip but to each their own! Great place for lunch!
Naomi
Been coming here for years. Coffee is now 46 cents, up from 39 cents 5 years ago. My favorite is beef french dip, and I get side cole slaw and potato salad. Yummy!
Ady Simons
Food isn't as good as I remember it, also the "French dip" had a severe lack of dip. Just a side pot of gravy.
Jill Manning
I love Phillipe the Original. The sandwiches are do delicious and the au jus, IMHO, is the best I've ever had. I was there for breakfast for the first time and know that I will be back. How do you say know to biscuits and gravy? An LA classic.
Rodrigo Cortés
Great service in an classic American restaurant, the sandwiches and salads are simply delicious
Kathleen Gomez
Great french dip sandwiches.
Martin De La Garcia jr
Came from Santa Barbara for the 1st time most amazing sandwich ever lived up to its hype. As you can see by my reaction it is an amazing sandwich great food great location great service like I said came all the way down from Santa Barbara and I wanted to go to this place for so long and it was well worth it thank you so much!
Melissa Urbina
This place is an institution and a family tradition. My grandpa used to bring home Phillipe's when he was coming home via Union Station from work and now whenever I am in LA, I HAVE to stop by this place and get a sandwich. Double dip beef and provolone for me and my mom, Double dip pepper jack and turkey for the hubs and my dad. It is an unforgivable sin to be close to this place and not stop and bring enough home for the family.
Richard Ferreria
It doesn't get more authentically Los Angeles than Philippe's. This place lays legitimate claim to the invention of tthe beef dip sandwich (I believe them). Grab a double dipped beef with a macaroni salad and a cold cola.
Michael Beener
Hasn't changed a bit. Yeah, the prices have gone up over the years, but it's still the same place to me. Single dipped beef dip and macaroni salad for the win for me!
Brandy
Old school, counter style deli food with great dip sandwiches. Coleslaw has great flavor, tangy, fresh, and light. They also have numerous delicious pies, breakfast, pickled things, and plenty of community style seating. Great prices, especially on beverages. Seating upstairs and down, a candy counter downstairs. I recommend taking a dip to go after you're done.
zack t
While it's up for debate on who originated the first french dip, opening in 1908, Philippe's is definitely one of the first places offering french dipped sandwiches in Los Angeles. You line up, order from the counter and on of the servers hand makes and dips your sandwich, slices your pie and fills your coffee. There's a variety of meats, cheeses, and the option for a double dip if you want your sandwich extra wet.
They also have have a great breakfast if you get there early enough, a wide selection of pies, salads, and drinks. It is almost always extremely crowded, although during off hours you can sometimes walk right up and order.
Casey Miranda
The best French Dip in L.A..its not even close. Its a must stop if you train it by goldline from Pasdena on the way to Dodger gane or USC game or heck just to go stop in anytime you are in Chinatown or downtown area. Its more than worth it.
Alex Uzlov
Nice sandwiches and other things but I don't feel the 5 star hipe...
jack petty
I love this place. So much history, so simple and yet so delicious. The cole slaw is exactly the same as my grandmothers depression era recipe (no carrots, vinegar based) Sonora like stepping back into her kitchen every time I’m there. Potato salad is on point and the sandwiches are mouth watering
kevin garcia
Bomb a** french dips. I get the lamb dip double dip with provolone and a side of blue cheese with hot mustard....mmmmmmmmm
Christopher Law
Really great French dip sandwiches. The atmosphere here is also very laid back. Communal tables after your ordered your food.
Karen Lawrence
The yummest French dip sandwiches ever! The sawdust on the floor ambiance is the perfect place to eat it too! Worth your while!
Alex Bonea
One of the best sandwiches you’ll ever have. Simlple/no frills and you can’t beat that price. French dip is one of my favorite dishes. I have them everywhere I travel. No one does them as good as Philippe, not even close. Staff was great as well. 10/10.
Boone 5269 A
Always a must stop when in LA.
They rearranged the counter order system. Which made it faster to order. Everything else look to be the same. Phone booths with dial up phones. Minture Trains and pictures display still outstanding.
Excellent service personnel.
Food always worth the price.
Robert Roman
Been going there there for 6.5 decades
The original beef dip and still the best I traveled from Victorville to treat my self to the best of the best
Thank you
Annette V
I haven't been here in a few years, but worth the trip for a pastrami sandwich.
Steve Arrietta
I have over 40 years of memories here, the tapioca, coleslaw and the hot mustard are legendary and haven't changed as far as I can tell... And the pork dip sandwich is my grub.. awesome I flash back everytime.. the train-room .. I can visualize my dad bringing me here when I was 7.. still the same. Although the cafeteria seating that was directly in front of the counter is gone to covid the rest is pretty much same.. clean restrooms and great food.. and fantastic service..

An iconic eatery steps from the Los Angeles Union station serving pretty much the same menu as the day it opened October 1st 1908. If you are in the area this year on October 1st , their iconic French Dip sandwich is only $1.10 in celebration
Roberta Wippich
Double-dip beef on a roll and lemon meringue pie. Can you say awesome?
Ray Samoy
Hard to beat their beef double dip with jack cheese and apple pie. Always fresh and tastes homemade.
Larry Abruzzo
been going there over 50 years , looks the same but of course things do change as well. $8.99 for the beef sandwich I remember $2.00, all the older faces behind the counter are all young faces now, the hot mustard no longer in the ceramic holder but a plastic squeeze bottle , I think I go there now for the memories more than the food, when it's was my mom and dad and two younger brothers, when we were a family

Phillipe's reigns supreme!! It's fantastically old school, it's delicious and it's in a great area of downtown. Nuff said. Go get a Dip.
Freddie Guillen
It's been 5 years last time I was here still super good. The staff always on point.
Chris Lavere
Coming into LA on the Amtrak, it's just a short walk over to this historic place, the best sandwich since 1908. Love these type of places and the sandwich to order is the famous beef double dip. I paired it with a Calidad Mexican beer and it was indeed worth the walk over to be here and enjoy this sandwich. Make it a stop for sure on your visit to LA.
J Hall
Didn't get the hype, pretty mediocre. Cole's has much better French dip sandwich.
Richard Rivera
If you know, you know. Phillipe's is a staple in the downtown area. Beefdip with cheddar and hot mustard is unmatched. Definitely have to try if you haven't already done so. Wait is a little long, but, expected with a pace as popular as this. We keep coming back. Love you guys!

My friends enjoyed their meals, but mine wasn't as good. My ham and swiss dip sandwich was cold, which I didn't expect. The chili was good, with diced onions and cheese. The portions with okay but not notable. There's enough seating and service is fast.
Jeff Owens
This place was awesome on all levels. Everything about this place takes you back in time. Food was great. Atmosphere was wonderful. A crazy mix of cafeteria, meets a Subway sandwich shop, meets a diner, meets a depression era dining hall.
American Riviera Tours
Great place for delicious dipped sandwiches. Have been open for over 100 years. We tried pastrami sandwich and it was great.
Phillip B
Recommended by locals and was a slice of real L.A. that we would have never found on our own. So delicious!
Derek Jackson
Cool sandwich shop near Chinatown. Great stop on our way to the Dodgers game. It was busy but worth it. Great sandwiches!
Timothy Dallinger
Some of the all-time best dip sandwiches anywhere. A great place to go for dinner before going to a show or concert at any of the theaters around the Music Center. Enjoy!
Adam Dalton
I loved it, the sandwich was awesome and the pickled egg was delicious 😋 p …

Absolutely a must STOP before a Dodgers game.
Original French Dip, delicious potato salad with a pickle. Classic

We were near by and had to stop in for a bite. Been coming here since I moved to la. Always a great choice when your in town.
Robyn Lin
Maybe I just don't like the french dip, but couldn't understand what's the yummy part with soggy buns. beef was great though.
Helaire Milton
It's been twenty years since we ate here. We spent over 90 dollars and they forgot my beef stew.
Hide Fukumoto
Very famous French Dip place close to Union Station. Not only foods, I like the atmosphere, too. Do not forget to buy desert!!
Bernie Miller
I have enjoyed the French beef dipped sandwiches there since I was a kid. I am 82.
johnny Martinez
The food was great the wait time was fair other than that I give it a number of eight
Arleen
I always so pleased with food and service at Philippe's. Love those French Dips and pickles.
Cal Patton
Wasn't sure if I'd like this or not....but yeah baby it's a real treat and I will absolutely be back!
Jon Owens
The BEST French dipped sandwiches in California.

Our family loves this place! Never go through Las Angeles without stopping here. The double dipped roast beef sandwich is so good. I like the macaroni salad too. This is a great stop with a lot of history. You can get a cup of coffee for .46 cents, ice tea for .80 cents or a glass of fresh made lemonade for .90 cents 🙂 you all have to try it!!
David Aaronson
When I worked downtown, I would venture into Philippe's several times a month. If you ever have jury duty in the downtown courts, it is a nice walk and great food for your lunch break. Coming back from Palm Springs recently, we decided to eat lunch at Philippe The Original. Same great food, sawdust still on the floor. They have added Pastrami (which I had, very good) to the menu and now do take credit cards for payment. I love the Chili and the great hot mustard and coleslaw. What a wonderful Los Angeles institution.
Rikki Perez
First time trying the pastrami and it was as fantastic as the double dipped beef dip which is my usual go-to. This place is amazing...please don't ever change!

A must try Cheesesteak in LA. The dining atmosphere is very cool.

This place has an old 1950ish vibe. Cool😎👌
I have been here many times and on different days.
This place will never fail you.
The sandwiches, soups, deserts are good. They have beer and wine also.
It's really a nice place for a first date and family friendly. This place has a very casual Jeans and a nice shirt/blouse or just a plain ole tee-shirt vibe.
An average meal will cost around $20. If you order alcohol it will cost you a little more.
The employees at Philippe are very very nice. The lines can sometimes be long but they move quickly.
They always have someone come around and clean up after people leave so you won't have to wait for a clean table.
Parking is free and they have two lots. You can park on the street also but it's metered.
About a block south across the street is Olvera Street and Union station.
After you finish your meal you can walk around to Alvaro Street get a churro or margarita and just have a really awesome day.
Union station is nice also for its historic building architecture so it's a nice day after leaving Philippe.
I recommend Philippe for the food, casual atmosphere and the walking scenic bonuses after your meal. 😁👌

Old School place… asked some guys where to get some coffee and they recommend this place. So glad they did. Lamb was cut right off the bone in front of us… good food, good service, Old School Place…

Simply the best French dip sandwiches. Great mustard and pickled eggs.
24 hours!
300 lb Gorilla
Had a double dip NY pastrami with swiss cheese and potato salad. I heard they have good chili, need to try that next time.
Ben Grippin
What a great place!-newcomers should stick with the french dip sandwich-Their famous sweet hot mustard is at every table and available for sale at the register. the hewell howser documentary on youtube is interesting
Essa Al-Essa
Perfection beef and pastrami both double dipped with hot mustard
Tabitha Lievanos
Great food! First time there and will be back!! We ordered single dip beef, bowl of chili and clay chowder and a slice of pie
Rich Dubiel
I had the pastrami double dip. The wife had the single dip beef. It was outstanding! Can't believe I haven't been here before but will definitely be back
Ambar B Capoor
A LA landmark and classic, you can never go wrong with Phillipes. From the waitress' in their timeless outfits with their polite and helpful attitudes to the high quality of meat and bread used, every sandwich here is an absolute culinary marvel. The hot mustard is truly eye opening, the pickles crunchy and the macaroni salad is still made the way grandma made it. Definitely a top 10 LA experience.
Richard Nunez
I love Philippe. The food is served fast and delishious. Always fresh. Not pricey, but the portions are small. Big eaters buy two sandwiches. Overall best place to eat before Dodger games. Always pretty ladies there eating 6 inchers
Brent Davis
This is an LA landmark. Coffee is 46 cents! Love the biscuits!
Paul Payam Maple
Wow amazing place, I enjoyed at the place with food. Those walls talk to you about history of the place. Highly recommended
Joanna Linfield
This is an LA landmark! We've been coming here since the early sixties, and they never disappoint. Philippe's is a must after a Dodger game. When you stop by, I recommend getting your sandwich "double dipped"
Robert Sedillo
Just simply the best. Been coming here for years. Brought my girl, first time here, she loved it!!!!!!
David Lombard
An LA tradition. Double dipped beef on French toast with cup of chili and glass of lemonade. Outstanding!
Marc
Always great. Tried an omelette and it was almost as good as the beef dip sandwich. The staff there is so nice too.
Kori Kobayashi
Got the recommendation from a friend and it definitely lived up to it's reputation. Delicious roast beef sandwich, try it with the spicy mustard for some extra flavor!
Sam Wong
Is it me or are the sandwiches getting smaller and the prices are going higher? I understand the price, inflation, and raise in salary, but the sandwiches didn't seem to fill me up. I've been going to the HAT and I can order 1 sandwich that will be good for 2 meals. Price is just about the same. Wish they give it a little more. Service remains great though.
Gerald Brandenburg
Awesome french dipped sandwiches! You gotta check this place out if you have never been here, try double dipped beef and cheddar if you're unsure what to get!
Danielle C
Historic! Prices are reasonable and it feels impressive to see the recipes remain the same throughout time. Classic deli-style ordering at the counter and self-seating. A must-visit in Downtown LA
Carol Peraza
Love this place but they have made the sandwich smaller....yes, the bread is smaller...WTH...asked for double dipped....only one side dipped....asked for yellow Chile's....didn't get them....my cousin stayed at counter while I looked for a table...otherwise experience would have been 5 stars
Mantas Garnelis
I was shocked when I got inside, so many people were in a line waiting to order that early in the daytime:)) I liked the food quality, although it felt a bit pricey, but hey, it’s LA:))
Jessica (JessiKa)
Food is pretty good but considering what's available kind of expensive. Service is good however however lunchtime can be a bear as it gets very packed and they have the same amount of order takers as they have on the slower periods so wait times can easily be anywhere from twenty to forty minutes standing in line.
Again food is GOOD but not so much that you would want to wait that long nor pay the high price for the less than average size portion.
silver tone Davis
Always great. Been going since 1965, same good food always
Frank Vargas
Simply the best.. delicious 😋 fresh and a wide selection of tasty treats. …
J Love
Pork and beef sandwiches were tender and flavorful. Adding mustard gave some diversity but not necessary. Macaroni and potato salad were tasty. Price was expected for a place of reputation.
Order ahead and skip the lines.
Peter Black
Best sandwiches ever! If I am in Los Angeles, I am going to Philippe's no matter what. This is such a great restaurant with tons of memories. I loved their update with the 2020 Dodgers World Champions sign!
Laura Walker
Excellent, delicious French dips.
The bread was super fresh with ample roast beef. Although you do need to request the au just for dipping. We also had the potato salad and a large kosher dill pickle
For dessert, we ordered 1 slice of apple pie and 1 slice of chocolate cream pie, both very good.
gail limon
Philippe used to be a place of huge sandwiches but sign of the times its simply just another good sandwich place. Thank you
L Merjil
Excellent food, service, ambience and fair prices. Been coming here for over 50 years
eileen hernandez
Best beef dipped sandwiches in Los Angeles. But they also serve pork, lamb, side salads, pickles, chilies, desserts, delicious chili bowls with shredded cheese, beverages and breakfast items. Landmark in the city.
James B
Always a great place to eat for lunch when you're in the LA area
Lesley Estrada
The only thing I can say is that I love this place. I've been coming here since I was a kid! The quality has never changed. I don't think that I could say anything else. Nothing here is bad. Simple food that's cooked excellently.
marla chacon
Double beef dip sandwich so good and the potatoe salad and macaroni salad are tasty. The chilie beans are really good.
Niko Ziegler
One of the best french dips, counter service old school deli. Long line at lunch but it will move fast they 5-6 station and the people running it knew what they were doing. Went single dip for my first time would definitely go double or wet next time. Coleslaw, pickle and potato salad were all great as well.
Jake
Had a wonderful first time here. Most impressed by the counter service - you order and your food is made in front of you while you pay, then you take it to your table ready to eat.
Beef sandwiches are phenomenal, lamb is heavier and still tasty, turkey is much much lighter than beef and lamb - tasted like mostly bread. Lemonade is a bargain, and tapioca pudding was a flavor punch. Free parking too!
Marie D
I love this place and I'm a vegetarian! Where else can you get a PB&J ? Classic Los Angeles
Stacy Daigh
Great food, great location near historic downtown, but I imagine it would be miserable with long lines. Lucky for me we went later at night and got our food right away. I was not at all disappointed.
Brent Pham
Had the Beef Dip. Very good sandwich but over $10 for what I consider to be a small sandwich.
