Been wanting to visit this place for years and finally got around to it. Very good food. The smoke smell is intoxicating as soon as you walk in the door. Intimate restaurant with a good unique variety of menu items. "What Guy Had" is a good mix of different items. The red beans and rice are a must have and the ribs are great. The catfish cake with the sauce was incredible. Will definitely return but the prices aren't cheap, nothing is anymore.

Finally got in to eat at this place and the wait was worth it. As you can see by my rating I loved my overall experience but not everything was pleasant. A group of friends and I made reservations, you have to make reservations for groups with 6 or more. Upon arriving at the restaurant it was clear that parking was going to be an issue. Once inside the arouma of smoked meats and BBQ hit your nose. They instantly make your mouth water. A very pleasant hostess greets you and makes sure your whole party has arrived. Once seated your waitress shows up to take drinks and then disappears only to come back a few mi utes later with all your correct drinks. Our group ordered some appetizers with our meals. The jerk chicken tacos were by the the favorite followed by as chicken dip, and coming in last was the car fish cake. Our main dishes were a variety of different options including a couple specials. One thing to know about the specials that you have to get there early because when they're out they are out. All of our food came out hot and delicious there was just a couple items that we were not a fan of. Most notably was the "What Guy Had", this is what Guy fieri ordered when he did Diners Drive-Ins and dives. No one at our table really enjoyed that. Overall we had an amazing time with good food I would just be very cautious on what you order as some of the prices are expensive because they are based off of current market value.

Excellent food. Superb service.
Top notch food. Excellent choices in the menu. The prices on the website are not correct. Ask for pricing inside. Full slab as of July 2022 is about 33$. Overall very good. Ribs were a touch too dry. Collard greens side is kind of small and not tasty. Cowboy beans are awesome.
Beer is cheap and there is a large selection. Must visit Des Moines restaurant

I'm so glad they have opened their doors again. Definitely one of our favorite places to go and eat without the kids (although they do have a good kids menu). We had the half chicken, brisket, grits of the day (green chili), apples, potatoes of the day (mashed with beer cheese soup), veggie of the day (smoked corn), cornbread, and peppermint chocolate cake. I always have the Mango margarita!

A little confused at first by the market prices and of-the-day items, but our waitress was quite helpful. Great sauces and flavors! Overall it was pretty delicious!

Local friends have long recommended the Mango. Finally got there last night, and it definitely lived up to the billing. We got the smoked chicken dinner, the brisket sandwich and the jerk chicken quesadillas. The portions were large, and the food was outstanding. Their smoke is pure magic, and their house made barbeque sauce is very good. The sides were also very good. The staff was very friendly, and the service was great.
Colby Kessler
Some of the best smoked food I've ever had. Unique sides are outstanding. A lot of great Cajun flavors. Staff has a cool vibe and are very professional. Nice small building.
Trevor Johnson
Excellent! Very happy that I stopped here on my way through town. Some of the best cornbread I’ve ever had — and the ribs and lamb tacos were also fantastic.

One of the best dining experiences I've had in many many years. The atmosphere was, admittedly, a little on the loud side, but if felt like the sounds of conversation around you rather than just a noisy din.
The food was amazing! I had the shrimp and grits, and that was the best food I've had in a while!
The drinks/appetizers came within a very reasonable time, and were both delicious!
The dessert was to die for!
I can't wait to recommend this place to my friends, and I'm counting down the days until I go here again!
Jill
Great discovery! This is a wonderful spot! The food was excellent with wonderful choice options! The atmosphere was very pleasant and quiet enough to have a conversation. The owner and wait staff are friendly with a sense of humor and fun. Highly recommend.. we will be back

We just moved to the area, the first place we wanted to try was Flying Mango. I was just amazed! Extremely good service! Mike stopped by and introduced himself, which I’ve never experienced before. Food was delicious and I didn’t get the fast food, processed feeling you get when you eat at most restaurants. You can tell the food was made fresh. Thank you Mike and staff for an awesome experience! I will see you soon!

I've been wanting to try this restaurant since I moved to Des Moines 7 years ago. And life just hadn't leant itself to me to come eat here yet. But a stroke of luck and an unexpected extra day in the neighborhood, was a perfect day to try some of my favorite food. I like to think of myself as a self appointed southern food connoisseur. All my favorite loves are in southern cuisine. I am always indecisive when it comes to catfish and a beautiful hunk of meat. So I got both in the Redneck surf-n-turf. It'll be near IMPOSSIBLE for me to order something different the next time I go because that dish was HEAVENNNLY. Everything had distinct and different flavors which made me do the Shaq Shimmy with every bite! Another thing...the vibes of the staff were so infectious, positive, brimming with passion for what they do, and it definitely translated around them. I left feeling like that one cousin coming to the family BBQ that no one has seen for the last 7 years, but there'll always be a plate for me. A delicious, yummy, plate.

We have not been back to this establishment since before pandemic...did not disappoint....the food exceptional...the neighborhood feel of a welcome place was just as we remember....only better..
The icing on the cake was the exceptional service we received. Wish I knew her name ....but just a great server....Couldn't have asked for a better 43 anniversary dinner....and the food....my my my....
Our thanks for a great time .

It was nice to get seated when the main dining room was so busy. Had the shrimp pontchatrain, which was like comfort if you miss seafood. Also had the ginger mango non-alcoholic drink (driving through town), which was like a ginger bread cookie in a soda, warm and cold at the same time. Staff were excellent, attentive, and welcoming. Flying Mango is a must try.
Ken Price
Brisket unlike I have ever had. Excellent. Collard greens and red beans and rice outstanding. Could not eat it all of it. Friendly waitress boxed it up for me. Oh, the corn bread it was money! The waitress was helpful when ordering and didn't say "perfect" a million times, that is annoying btw. I will come back.
Blake P
Service was great!
I got the ribs and they definitely tasted a bit older, not fresh by any means. That said, still the best ribs I've had in the area.
I'll definitely have to try it again.
Captain Art Wilson
First time here. Outstanding! Best red beans and rice I've had since I left Mississippi in the 80's. My sister loved her dinner also. I'll be a repeat customer.
Luke Dickens
Amazing food, service and atmosphere!
Food came out quick and was fresh and tasty as ever.
Server was smiling and knowledgeable while offering the best service I have had compared to other places.
Strongly recommend

Disappointed with takeout order the juice from ribs soaked thro bag and when I took it out of car everything fell out on pavement. The containers didn’t open so everything was edible but food was mixed up and didn’t look so good. Would show photos but not sure how to post photos. Hope in future they put ribs in separate bag or plastic bag that doesn’t leak. Always enjoy eating in the restaurant.

My wife and I visit a lot of restaurants and give our reviews. Flying Mango is one of the best 👌 The service was great, and the food is well-prepared and delicious. Definitely a 5 star experience.
Mel
We were a party of 5, everyone got something different and we all enjoyed our meals! The drinks were ok, mine was not what I ordered but everyone else liked theirs.
Nikki
We had the catfish with greens and white cheddar grits and the ribs, brisket and sausage with red beans and rice and chicken creole. Very nice waiter, kind people. . .absolutely deliscious. The best cajun food we have ever had. Different flavors, everything was exceptional and unique. Definitely stands out. Not anything around like it. Every taste was a new and fresh twist but also classic and hearty.
Richard S
I travel all over the country for work and try to stop at a Triple D spot in every city I'm in. I also try to have what Guy ate the time he was here. (Ribs and fish cakes)This is a great cozy place and the food and service was awesome. Lynn made me feel at home with friendly attitude and service. I cannot ever see her having a bad day. I will be back.
Vivi Ding
Our waitress was attentive and really nice. The food was phenomenal. We will definitely be back.
Jonathan Schulz
My parents, sister, and I ate here tonight for the first time on our way to a performance at the Des Moines Playhouse. We arrived shortly after 5:00 and the restaurant filled up very quickly. It was a little loud but our waitress was very patient explaining the specials and taking our order. We had the Louisiana Platter, Cajun Shrimp and Dirty Rice, Half Chicken, and BBQ Pork Sandwich. The wait time was short and food was very hot and delicious. We had the Chocolate Cake and Lemon Creme Brulee for dessert.
Nick Hamilton
We visited at about 8pm on a Friday. There was a short wait, but there was a woman grabbing drinks for you while you waited which was great. I really like that the open kitchen is right near the door. We ordered the chopped brisket sandwich, and the 3 meat platter with brisket, ribs, and sausage. All were great. Our server was very attentive without being over bearing. We will be back.
Stuart Miller
Really great place. The food was absolutely incredible. Plus another bonus, the kitchen is right up front so the whole place just smells like smoky savory Cajun food constantly. I'm also not entirely sure if they're going for an upscale fine dining atmosphere, or more casual? Seems like they had some essences of both. But whatever, the food was more than enough to earn five stars from me! Definitely worth a visit.
Rene Heglin
I love this place! when you walk in, you can see food being prepared. The chefs greet you as they cook. The ombeyonc is everything. It's old school meets new school. The food is Soooo good!!
Jordan Gonzales
Fantastic Red neck surf n turf! Opened the door and it smelled wonderful. Cornbread super moist. Cooks were very nice and knew what they were doing.
Aaron Ogden
Great place for some Louisiana style cooking, owner stopped and talked to us awile and staff were awesome
Gary H
Service was friendly and prompt. The catfish and red beans and rice were outstanding! Ribs and sauce were pretty good. Only 4 stars because brisket was dry...maybe a bad batch? I'd try it again but no brisket.
Andrew Colosky
Great salsa and guacamole. We were able to sit outside and it was a beautiful day. The tacos were good, I didn't feel like they lived up to the hype. If you're up for flavorful complex to tacos, this is a place to hit
Kristina Santiago
We ordered for pickup and I can't speak for authenticity but I liked it overall. My husband got the 24 hr brisket with sauteed veggies and red beans and rice, while I got the BBQ pulled pork sandwich with the chicken creole and a side order of cornbread. He really liked his meal so I had a few tastes. The brisket was a tad dry but I liked the sauce flavor. The veggies were good. A bit crunchy and a nice flavor. The red beans and rice were ok. I liked my pulled pork sandwich. A tad spicy and good flavor. The chicken creole was mmmmm. The cornbread was not what I was craving so I was a bit sad. Not bad, but it had a slightly lemony flavor so I left it for breakfast tomorrow. Although I was only there for a few minutes, the servers were very nice and friendly as I made my way to the bathroom.

Food is pricey but worth it... absolutely delicious. The menu has a wide variety of authentic soul food. You can tell they take pride in their small restaurant; the owner is very involved and the staff attentive. I’ve been there twice already and will be back again.
Andrew Rountree
One of the friendliest restaurants you will ever find. Could be the best bbq in Des Moines, and that's just some of the menu. For an appetizer we shared the highly recommend wings. They were smoky with a nice char, the sauce was something like a soy/ balsamic. I had the brisket, apples and chicken creole. For dessert I had the creme brulee. The brisket was very tender with a nice smoke ring. I did not try bbq sauce. It was moist and tasty as is. The apples were cinnamon and sweet. These are fresh apples. The chicken creole was very good and flavorful. There is crystals Louisiana hot sauce if you need to kick it up. The creme brulee was a perfect size and high quality. Enjoy friends!

Amazing food, brisket was 🔥 Alex served us and was prompt and excellent! Can’t wait to come back! …
Jeffrey Klein
First off we had a large party and the waitress was awesome. Drinks were good. Red beans and rice was very good. Collared greens were a little vinegary and needed to cut up to more edible size. They were also cold. The half chicken was overly smokey. Maybe a lighter wood would knock that down a bit. The chicken itself didn't really have much flavor and could have used a brine or something to impart some flavor once you got past the skin. The waitress was very good I felt I needed to say that twice. People said the brisket was okay. Overall okay but Jethros is better
Carol Wych
First time visiting Flying Mango. Good food, not your usual BBQ! We had the pork tenderloin and smoked half chicken. Others at our table had Cajun catfish and said it was very good! Excellent service by Lynn, friendly staff and owner!
Brad West
This place was great! Food was exceptional and so was the owner. Couldn't have asked for better service. Food portions were, I took some home with me large. The owner was very friendly with stories as was the young lady who served us. Great atmosphere. Can't wait to go back and get the brisket, which was soo tender the owner slices it with a spoon, it was juicy and had such flavor. This place is the true hidden gem of Des Moines...
Min Johnson
Overall good experience. Long time since here last. Food and wine were good all around the table. Service was very good. Had everything from ribs to chicken to pasta dishes to the quesadilla of the day at our table. Warning that they have salad available, but only one dressing choice - honey mustard..absolutely nothing else - not even oil and vinegar which I found almost comical so I had to pass on ordering salad.
Capiz Greene
Been wanting to try this restaurant for a couple of years. Finally got the opportunity! Food is very tasty, great seasonings, and good service. Good portions, good value for your money. Definitely will be returning soon!
Chad
Fantastic meal. Friendly staff and amazing Smokey bbq. We got the wings and the pick three platter. Good life choice.
Jeramy McMillen
Wonderful staff, very down to earth! The food is divine!! Can't say enough about this place! Nothing better than the happiness that comes from a great meal with great people that is supporting a hard working family owned business! You absolutely can't go wrong here!!!
Al Weltha
Delicious!
Wish I could afford to go there more often.
Those side dishes add up fast.
Tip was more than I pay for a whole meal some places.
donetha palmer
My husband and I was celebrating our birthdays and anniversary and decided to come and try the food. We both had the red neck surf and turk and it was delicious. The breading pudding for desert was amazing.
Steve Ware
Super delicious food and super delicious service. Just the right amount of food, just the right amount of spice. Cajun and BBQ done southern and done right. Don't miss the grits or the dirty rice. Mmmm good. Back to the bajou baby!
Danielle Majors
So shortly after the Flying Mango re-opened, my boyfriend and I were able to walk in and grab a seat!! I was actually pretty surprised to see the kitchen and people cooking right as you walk in. We ordered the chicken and fettuccine pasta with shrimp. It was very good & very well cooked! We also recommend the mango ice tea. The owner came to our table and talked with us (which is a huge thing in my opinion)! Asked how our food was and we talked a little about where we were from and what brought us to Flying Mango. We will definitely go again!!
Brian Bopp
Flying Mango is full of surprises! Don't let the drab exterior and location keep you away. Inside you'll find a clean modern eatery crammed with hungry diners. My half rack of BBQ ribs was delicious along with blackened catfish. Every dish at our table was great. Try the Mango Ice Tea! Parking is a challenge but worth it.
B.L. Benedict
Best BBQ in the area! I love the new waiting area that used to be the front dining area. We got to order drinks while we waited, and that passed the time! I love thier brisket, it is the best brisket you can get.
Michelle Czarnecki
Hands down best brisket in our state!
I love their side options. great big portions. staff is friendly and efficient. Super good Bloody Mary! (Andouille n Shrimp on top) their catfish cake appetizer is awesome! The white chocolate bread pudding with Mango drizzle is scrumptious.
the ribs are melt in your mouth.
prices are good and worth every penny.
they have a great Mango Moscato too
I love their beer cheese mashed potatoes. (they feature different potatoes and grits on rotating menu)
Perfect date night place 💚💚🔥🔥🔥🔥

Unique atmosphere, amazing food, quick service! Always impressed!

Absolutely incredible. Everything is homemade. Service is great.

Wow, what a delicious secret here in the heart of Des Moines! Brisket was excellent, pulled pork had a unique spicy flavor & the service was great despite it being swamped.
Pati Hope
Can't say enough nice things about this place. The food is awesome, the ambiance is great (put down your phone!) and the owner is a hoot. LOVE it!
Kelly Hildebrandt
My husband and I were traveling from MI to CO. Des Moines was our half-way point. He found this place on Yelp and we were not disappointed. It was a gem - lucky to get in at 5:30. Service was fantastic, food even better, had a wonderful vibe and great people watching (especially watching owner Mike interact with his loyal customers). If you find yourself in Des Moines, check this place out!
Chantal
Ordered ubereats. Waited hours. No show. Called the restaurant and the owner answered. Uber is lying about working with this restaurant. Despite all that the owner was still willing to try to get me my order. It didn’t work out and I never got the food but I appreciate the owner being kind hearted. Warning: DO NOT ORDER ON UBEREATS
Emery Griffith
Delicious food! Highly recommend to anyone that's looking for some spiced and smoked meat in the midwest. The owners were very personable and gave great service despite the current labor shortage. It's clear they really care about the restaurant.
Heidi Janecke
Lovely server who made great recommendations. Garlic mash potatoes were awesome
Glenn Harrison
This restaurant was absolutely outstanding. Mike and his staff made us feel welcome, and the food was the best we've had in Des Moines. We had the smoked pork medallions and fish tacos, and the dishes were to die for. This was probably the best dining experience we've had in a long long time.
Dr. Cupcake
Very fun/polite staff. Amazing food. Would 100%recommend
Charles Sammons
Great food. Staff and owners are always welcoming. Outstanding experience!
Sam Caravana
Their brisket is superb! Living in St. Louis and visiting Kansas City monthly, I feel like I’m a decent judge of BBQ and this place is great. The brisket was super tender and the sauce had just the right amount of heat. Cornbread was pretty dang good as well. The green chili grits was a little mushy for my taste but had good flavor.
Kim L.
WOW! 10 out of 10. I have a duck problem. I eat ducks all over the world. I know a good one when I see one. It was succulent but crunchy at the same time. Get the smoke duck!
My husband got the jerk pork and he said it tastes just like in Jamaica.
Service is good when I picked my food up. Family owners. Remarkable place!!
monty jorgensen
I can't say enough great things about Flying Mango. From the service to the food, it's just always on-point. I've had too many dishes to mention them all. My advice, always get the grits of the day. It never disappoints. This is the only place in town that I order grits. Their service has always been marvelous and attentive. The location is fairly small, but the hosts always make an effort to seat the guests as soon as they can. Never any fuss. I absolutely love this place.
Hannah Hertz
Tonight my friend and I went out for a much needed night out, and ended up going to the flying mango. We walked in and were instantly greeted by the owner who was so friendly and incredibly kind. Everyone else was also so kind and helpful. We ordered the Mussels as an appetizer, and they were AMAZING! She ended up getting the Louisiana Platter and I Had the Cajun Shrimp
With dirty rice. Both were so delicious, and super flavorful. Our server constantly checked in on our making sure everything was tasting fine and asking us if we needed anything else. He was very attentive and very welcoming. He made us feel completely comfortable, even with it being our first time and not knowing the menu. He was happy to answer all of our questions in a very helpful manor.
I have to say overall customer service, food, atmosphere, and even just the general kindness and care we were shown tonight for dinner was one of the best experiences I’ve had at a restaurant, and I will now recommend them to anyone looking to try new and delicious food. It was a 5 star feeling all around and I will be back often💜
James Lawler
Great food, great variety, Service was great and the ice tea was awesome
Stephanie Daggett
I absolutely love this place, one of the best restaurants in Des Moines! What a gem! The brisket, catfish, corn bread and the drinks were so delicious.
Patrick Sherman
Hidden gem. Wife had an enormous stuffed pork chop. I had seared yellowfin tuna. Both delicious. They even made Brussel sprouts taste fantastic! Not an easy trick. Even the ice tea was fantastic. Not just Slightly colored water. Finished with coffee(also great), and caramel apple pie with whipped cream. Not sure what else one would require. So if you read this make the effort to go here and enjoy 😉! If you need a celebrity angle, they were featured on Guy Fieri's DINERS,DRIVE INNS AND DIVES!
Mike Eaton
Food and service were excellent, had brisket, cornbread and red beans and rice. Way too much for me to eat, but took some home for later. Atmosphere was great. Around $20 to $25 a person and well worth the trip. Had large group of 16 people, called a few weeks before and set up. Worked great.
Robert Mani
First time at this restaurant. We both had shrimp and grits, it was amazing. Shared a house salad which was very good. The owner stopped at our table and upon learning we were first time visitors, he brought out a piece of their brisket. It was the most tender and flavorful brisket I have ever had. My niece is a vegan, so we asked him if they had something for her. He said if nothing on the menu appealed to her, let him know and they will whip something special for her.
Jenn
Love, love, love this place! The brisket is second to none. The cornbread is always my side of choice. Or the grits of the day. Or the potato of the day. Decisions, decisions!
Rebecca McPherson
Loved this place. Food was excellent. I had the Beef Brisket Sandwich and the brisket was falling apart. So delicious. We also ordered the Smoked chicken dip with the chili cops and it was heaven. Definitely recommend. We knew we were in the right place for dinner when we smelled the smokers it behind the restaurant. Thank you so much for a delicious dinner!
Heather Johnson
Great food and service! Our first time but we will go back, the chicken was delicious and how awesome to have a unique selection. We were greeted promptly and only had a short wait to be seated, love that they give you your drink while waiting. Our server gave us time to make a selection and the portions were amazing!
Tyson Leyendecker
One of my favorite restaurants! Cozy and intimate. The food is always fantastic and the service is some of the best. Best cornbread anywhere!
LeeLoo D.
New to town and tried this place for first time....yeah, this will be my new go to place. I don't have words for how much we enjoyed it. A lot of the food is Louisiana fare and having recently spent several months in New Orleans it is even better than what we had there.
ed sullivan
The food is the greatest atmosphere great the owners are great people also very friendly family-friendly environment
Nathan Blunck
Food is fantastic. Had the Louisiana platter with chicken creole, red beans and rice, and a link of andouille sausage. Everything was fantastic. Cocktails looked inventive and I didn't hear anyone that had one complaining. Service was wonderful too. Can't wait to go back.
Javan Steffen
Loud and a bit pricey. But you get what you pay for. I got the Brisket and was amazed at how much meat I got. It was absolutely delicious in every sense of the word. The meat was tender, but still had substance to it. Cornbread was great and the coleslaw was the best I've ever had in any restaurant. Owner was out and about and friendly. I would suggest doing a reservation ahead of time, if possible. It's busy.
Emily Steward
Nice restaurant specializing in Creole/Southern/Caribbean style food. A vegetarian can get by, but this restaurant is primarily for meat eaters. The veggie street tacos were tasty and they have a nice list of craft cocktails. The owner or manager walked around checking on people and seemed friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is nice and cozy and pleasant. I definitely recommend this restaurant.
Erin Marshall
Excellent food. Good BBQ is hard to find in Iowa when you grew up in Kansas City but this place reminded me of home. The brisket falls apart at the touch of your fork and melts in your mouth. Matched with cornbread the size of a slice of pie and some baked apples, and it's the perfect pre-nap meal. 🙂 I was also impressed with how quickly the food was ready -- it seemed like no time from when I ordered to when I had my food in front of me. The owner also came by to say hello and ask how our meal was. That was a very nice touch. I'd recommend Flying Mango to anyone looking for good food and a friendly environment.
Cujoman 187
Awesome food. I had the sampler platter where you pick 3 meats and two sides. The ribs were pretty good. They do kinda char them on the outside which looks worse than it tastes. It actually tastes pretty good. The chicken was fairly good and the brisket...yeah the brisket is where it's at! By far the best out of the 3 meats! Very juicy and delicious! I very much highly recommend getting the brisket! The beans and rice was ok. I'm not a huge fan of beans and rice anyway but I did eat it all so it was alright but the horseradish mashed potatoes were also amazing! They weren't overpowered with horseradish and had just the right amount of kick to them. Overall I would totally go back for the brisket and the horseradish mashed potatoes for sure! I've heard the duck is really good there and wouldn't mind trying that sometime yet too.
Wayne Boudreaux
Absolutely amazing BBQ! I had the brisket dinner and it was so tender you could cut it with a fork (or a butter knife if you bring in the big guns). Their homemade sauce was well balanced and flavorful. Staff was extremely nice and service was great. The only thing disappointing is that it’s not closer to my home since I was traveling to Des Moines on business. If you like top level BBQ, Flying Mango is a must-stop destination.
Chris Klahn
Great first experience here. Great food and service. The locals know why this is a go to place within the community.
Jeff Elsberry
Food and service was great, drinks weren't so good. If your going to order something go with a beer the.drinks have no alcohol in them.
Tyler Van Loon
Good food, multiple things I'm planning on trying on there menu.
Hunter Chandler
Not too bad! But for being there right at opening time the food wasn't as hot as I'd hoped unfortunately
Larry
BBQ Brisket with slaw in running for best sandwich in DM. Great staff, super food, awesome atmosphere. A Des Moines most do for visitors and locals.
Edward King
TOTALLY AMAZING. Seriously the most outstanding food I've had in a long time. Brisket is like butter and the sides are plentiful and very tasty. AMAZING staff and the owner is on site every time I go. Is a great spot and a must try if your new to the area. Favorite place in town.
JohnDana Custis
Exceptional local food and service.
They serve a unique blend of Midwest and Mississippi Delta food. Creole, Cajun, bar-b-que, and it is all very good.
As good as the food is, it doesn't compare to the service. Friendly, knowledge, experienced. Who could ask for more.
The highlight of the evening was waiting for our table. The chefs have an exposed kitchen immediately insider the front door. The chefs were engaging, generous, and entertaining.
We will definitely return. Than you for a memorable evening.
Mark Barbeau
We received a friendly greeting immediately upon entering this establishment. The staff continued to be friendly throughout our visit. The atmosphere was fun and light and entertaining and everyone was having a good time. Our server was sassy and funny and just made the experience delightful. The food was just amazing. The special of the evening was so creative and the interesting flavors blended very well together. Five stars.
Mae Corbett
Found out about this place on a TV show. So I had to drive to Des Moines to check it out. The two parking lots and the street parking were full. When we pulled up to the Restaurant. We were seated after a short wait at the front part of the place next to the kitchen. The food be cooked smelled Great. We were seated at a large table and the five of us all order different meals. Each Meal came with one or two sides. I had Blacken catfish. My family had Chicken, Ribs and brisket sandwich's. Sides of baked apples, collard Greens. Are server was the greatest and the rest of the staff were excellent.
Heather Barber
We've been wanting to try this place since we saw it on Triple D. Our waitress Lynn was AMAZING! Very friendly and down to earth. Atmosphere was cute and cozy. The chicken and brisket was ok. It would have been awesome if it was juicy. The rub and seasonings they used was great but again it would have been super if it wasn't so dry. The salad, red beans & rice, and the creme brulee were perfect. We will be back to try again.
P W
The 24 hour brisket is the best I have had. Anywhere. Collard Greens are wonderful. I have had many items off the menu. All good.
Look, if you go there at 6 pm, you will see. The place is packed. That should tell you something. Great local flavor foods. Not a chain!
Anthony Simmons
Delicious food. Great service. Worth the trip
Derek Ackley
Nice atmosphere, I ordered the pork chop it was a little dry,my fiance ordered the pork loin and it was dry too. I don't know if it was over cooked or what, it had really good flavor but just a little dry for me. Everything else was really good.
Jennifer Fahan Houk
It's was pretty good. The manager /owner came by a few times checking on us and was very attentive and friendly. The sever seemed annoyed... No special requests.. It was like she just didn't want to be there so that sucked. The food was good, tuna w/rice n black beans and the Louisiana platter. Seasonal drinks were very good!
Christopher Hupka
Good food. Quality food. I ordered the surf and turf but it wasn't as I expected red beans and rice and cornbread were delicious, but... If you serve something called redneck surf and turf the catfish should be fried not grilled and it wasn't that great. The ribs were also not anything to write home about. The other specials on the menu sounded delicious and I will definitely be back to try other items. The service was also prompt and courteous.
William Denoyer
Great spot for bbq. Not much to look at from the outside but a comfy, nice dining ambience inside. The sides were delicious. We had the red beans and rice, corn bread and potatoes. I had the brisket which was tender and a ton of food. My wife had the little chop that was huge and the smoke flavor
was great in the meat. This place is well worth the trip. I live in Chicago and will be back for sure.

Our food was amazing, we got the redneck surf n turf and the bbq pork sandwich. Everything was perfect, we will be back 😁 …
Martin Marshall
Wow, wow, wow! This place is off the charts amazing! I met a coworker there for dinner, I was in town for work and I love exploring new places. You walk in the front door and you are immediately greeted by the kitchen and amazing smells. The hostess greeted me with a smile and seated us quickly. Our waitress was awesome and on the ball even though she was handling a couple of large group tables. She gave us some awesome recommendations on both food and drink - both were amazing! I cannot recommend this place enough if you are looking to step out and try some awesome southern style cuisine.
Corn Dog
Awesome smoked brisket! My wife enjoys the roasted vegetables, and I really like the cornbread/cake. Clean. Very clean, and the parking is really good these days. Great place for a date, or evening with one's mate! Quiet. Soft music.
Delores Moore
Haven't done a review for some time yet had to get this out to you all after eating here last night. Forgot how much I enjoy this place, the menu, and staff. Offered drinks upon arrival and ended up ordering a bottle of Merlot off the their end-of-bin list. Nice. Were seated after talking with the owner, Mike. He recommended the Catfish Cakes. We ordered them, the Shrimp and Grits, and Chicken Pasta. Nailed it. The Catfish cakes rocked. Get them! The rest of the food was finished today as Daytona 500 left-overs.
Nick holland
Wife and I came here for birthday dinner, excellent experience!
Beans Angerstein
Very friendly and welcoming. Food was amazing!
David Jennings
Had the redneck surf and turf and it was fantastic.
Dana Roe
This place is AMAZING!!! From the atmosphere, the wait staff and most definately the food. I had a side if the creole chicken and rice to start iff....YUM! Then the brisket with slaw and corn bread for my main. Brisket was the most tender. And the portions are very generous. Also had the best waitress I have had in a long time!!!
Katrina Nickell
You know a place is good when the parking lot is full before they open. As soon as they started serving food the restaurant had an amazing aroma. When we got our food it was off the charts. Besides that, the service was fantastic and the owner was always in the dining room doing everything from checking o guests to clearing tables and picking trash off the floor. Can you ask much more from a restaurant?
Sara Jones
A great place with a great menu! I've never had a dish I didn't like. Chef Mike consistently outdoes himself with the daily specials, so be sure to say hi to him when you walk in! The staff is always friendly and the atmosphere is cozy.
Joseph Perez
Ordered the 24 hour brisket, sauteed vegetables and braised collard greens. Brisket could be cut with my fork and had a beautiful bark on it. Sauteed vegetables we're a medley of brussel sprouts, snap peas, bell pepper and onions, quite tasty. The greens...if you enjoy collard greens, get them as long as you're good with pork. Waitress was friendly, prompt and attentive.
TL:DR, I'll be going back as soon as I can stand up again from the massive portion of food
Dan Burns
Unfortunately I only get to the Flying Mango a couple times a year when I'm traveling. Most food establishments will have a bad day on occasion but I have never known that to be the case here. Expertly prepared smoked meats and other cuisine mostly with a southern and creole flair. Always fresh and always good!
Todd Jafvert
Everybody raves about this place it was ok. I had the brisket and it was tender but had no flavor. My mother in law had ribs and she loved them but I watched her eat them and they didn't fall off the bone like they should. She had meat left on the bone. If they are cooked right they should fall off they bone. Everything was ok but for the price I expected great. Seven adults and one child and our bill was $273 without the tip. I guess I'm just an Iowa farm boy but I wasn't impressed. The wait staff was great. My wife made me say that!
Tony Tandeski
One of Des Moines' best-kept secrets. Don't let the unassuming exterior fool you, the food and atmosphere INSIDE makes it one of the area's best restaurants.
A mix of BBQ, Cajun, and Caribbean (trust me, it works), the menu is expansive and filled with items you won't find anywhere else in the city. You cannot go wrong with the crowd favorite 24-hour beef brisket. Get the brisket or the sandwich version if you're looking for a little smaller portion (though still plenty big). Ask about the daily flavor for the grits and opt for that for your side choice.
The atmosphere is at the same time both casual and upscale. Come in jeans and a t-shirt or a suit. You'll fit in either way. Staff is more than friendly.
Amazing food, unique drinks, and great service combine to make this a Des Moines favorite for locals and visitors alike. Don't miss out.
Jack Carraher
We heard that this place was amazing, but in our experience the smoked meat was charred and not well seasoned and the grits were dry and grainy. The greens were decent, the drinks were good, the staff was friendly, and the atmosphere was fun. We'll check it out again... maybe we just got the wrong things.
Shelly Moline
Traveling through & Stopped here for dinner based on reviews online. This place will not disappoint! Amazing food, great taste, presentation and service (very sweet waitress.) It’s located in an older part of town but don’t let that fool you. My family tried the pulled pork, jerk pulled pork, brisket and I had a brisket quesadilla. Can we say ah-mazing!
Kyle Gross
I've been in Des Moines around a year now, and I have found this to be my absolute favorite restaurant in the metro. The food is always great and the BBQ here is the best I've had in Des Moines, and I've tried several of the local favorites. Really good drink menu and the service is always top notch.
Antonio Kelsey
I'm from Chicago and this was one of the nicest Creole restaurants I've ever been too! A cozy candle light theme. The waitress was fantastic! The wings are the best I've had in Des Moines. The Brisket was the best I've had in Des Moines. Chicken, Red Beans, and rice dido! I'm not a fan of the Rib but, the other food made up for that disaster. All and All its not a cheap meal expect to spend right about 80 -100 bucks. But it's well worth it!
Kim Orr
Our 1st time there and it was delicious! My husband had and loved the brisket. I had the pork chop and holy moly, it was huge. We'll definitely be back!!
Tommy BP
Flying Mango can be more that $20 per person for dinner, but the food is great and the portions are large. The server was attentive and friendly, but not overwhelmingly so. One of the good places for dinner in the area, it was an excellent weeknight dinner option.
Neal Rabogliatti
I have been coming here for 4 years whenever I'm in DesMoines. I first go hooked on the Brisket salad. The smoked brisket is consistently great. I just tried the ponchtrain shrimp, Cajun shrimp in a Louisiana style cream sauce on rice and tonight just tried Redneck surf and turf. The food is really unique and good but the staff is always friendly and fun. Always nice to find a place away from home you can go to for a good meal
Patrick Barnes
Had ribs and blackened catfish. The ribs were perfectly smoked and tender. The catfish had just the right amount of heat. We also enjoyed the cornbread with cinnamon butter. We had a great waiter as well.
Elizabeth Baldwin
Great food, recommend the Jenny Salad. We also tried the mussels appetizer. Note, don't sit in front area. One of the chefs yells out orders. It's really jarring and unpleasant. Hopefully management will take care of this situation as it spoiled our experience.
Desarai Krogh
Food was good, the Shrimp and grits were the best and the Kentucky bourbon beer was very good too. Very pricey though 2 ppl 2 drinks=68.00. Waitress was very nice and extremely quick service.
Jon Ole Olsen
Flying Mango is one of our favorite restaurants in Des Moines. If we have out of town guests to impress this is on the short list of places. The wife always orders BBQ, I generally get something Cajun and we are always happy. The service has been top notch with the owner usually stopping at the table to make sure that everything is excellent. I happened to notice that someone who gave the Flying Mango a single star also rated Red Lobster at 5 stars. I am not saying that you can't enjoy a meal at Red Lobster, but...
Lori Storms
Drove all the way from Minnesota just to experience the flying mango. Greeted enthusiastically at the door and able to speak directly with Mike. Wonderful sense of humor and seemed like an all-around good guy. The smokiness of the meat was superb! Tender and juicy as well. The collard greens were very tender and personally loved the red beans and rice. My husband enjoyed the sautéed vegetables and cornbread too. Excellent service was provided to us by Heather! Definitely must return!!
Theresa Vore
Fantastic, this was the first time for us and we were very impressed, especially because it was on Valentine's day. The food was wonderful and the service was great. The owner made sure everything was good and up to par! Thanks for the meal!
Frances Marks
Their Brisket is amazing but tonight I had the Catfish Patties... and so glad I did. This restaurant is at the top of their game every night. Lovely unique neighborhood atmosphere with a wait staff that compliments the menu. Love it!!!
Dawn Halstead
The customer service at Flying Mango is unrivaled. We had the takeout ribs and the bourbon pecan pie. We could not be happier with the food or service. We are so glad to be supporting a local business during Covid. Thank you so much
Nicholle Walter
Under whelming at best. The chicken dip was something I could have easily made a home with chicken and mayo. My shrimp and dirty rice was bland and left me wanting more. The only thing saving this review was my husband's meal. The grilled trigger fish was wonderful. We are undecided if we will come back any time soon.
T mcdan
Great atmosphere! The food is very well prepared and even better tasting. The owner is always present during hours. One of the best experiences in a restaurant I've had! Would recommend anyone visiting the area to try this place!!!
Lonnie Hudson
It is a small place that offers incrediable dishes. Guy Ferrie has been there infact he went there and reviewed it x2 just cause he did not get enough. They will even cook the dish that he ordered, just for you! They always have a chef special on the weekends. I have ordered the triger fish witch is out of this world. The pork chops are, eat one here and take the other one home for lunch. The ribs are the best in town! A must have is the wings, very unique flavor as apposed to the usual buffalo ones. The place does not offer any fried food, they don't even have a deep fryer. They always offer a twist on Grits, and on patatoes. I have not gotten a dish that I did not like there, and have ordered a lot of differnt items. You enter and the cooks are right there to greet you. I have been there so many times they know me. The service is friendly, and the Owner always, always, makes it to the table to see if all is well. Can't wait to go back.
Erin Lamb
This has been my absolute favorite restaurant for years. I always get a mango margarita and usually their quesadillas (often brisket or pulled pork, but it changes). You can't go wrong with the lime and garlic chicken pasta or anything smoked, the cornbread is delicious, and the greens remind me of my grandma's Sunday dinner. Whenever someone new to town asks where they should eat, this is my first answer.
Annette Morris
Saw the show on diners drive ins and dives last night and we had to come eat there!! We drove 3 hours but it was well worth it.. We absolutely loved the food, the staff was super friendly and the owner Mike was super nice and friendly. He took a picture with my husband and tokd us a super nice stiry about the who production crew, Guy fiere and his sister. Absolutely loved the whole experience.. We will deffinately come back in the future. All the diffrent tastes were just out of this world!!! Greens super good, corn bread very tasty, apples yummy.. Just all out awesome and the chocolate cake super good!!!!
Todd Wellens
If you like authentic barbecue cooked with real wood this is your place. Strike up a conversation with the owner if you can catch him, he is hilarious and deep at the same time. Great Place, I will be back often!
Kent Simmons
The best dining experience I have had in des Moines to date. The dining room was very busy when we walked in but the entire staff had a smile on their face. We were not rushed to order. The food was amazing (portobello sandwich and the redneck surf and turf), by far the best catfish I have ever eaten. Great, Low key atmosphere. Not often a restaurant impresses me from the moment I walk in to the time I leave. Wonderful! keep it up!
Bart Carlson
Great service. Food was amazing. Red beans and rice are the best. Smoke ribs and the Cajun catfish was the best. The remoulade for the catfish was the best. Good prices. The location is off the beaten path. We'll worth the find. This a true 5 star restaurant.
Matt Nielsen
It was a really cool little place. You walk in and you see the chef cooking on the stove there. Walking up from the back you can smell the grill going. I looked at the menu a bit before and saw what they had, and I went with the Big Chop along with Southwestern Smashed potatoes and Cowboy beans, along with a Two Hearted Ale. The chop came out and had a knife stuck in it and was about the size of a softball, and with the homemade bbq sauce it was awesome! We also shared a slice of Chocolate Malt Cake. It was gone pretty quick
Rich Harmer
We ate dinner here tonight. They fit our table of 5 in at the last moment. I suggest reservations. Parking nearby was fine and service was quick. andouille Sausage in the Louisiana platter was very good. Spicy, but not too spicy. Corn bread was okay and creole chicken was a little under flavored for me. Beans with andouille sausage in them was also good. Chocolate cake for desert was also very good. I'd go back for sure.
Mirna Gutierrez
Wings were asian infused and really good. Chicken creole is really spicy, but my husband loved it. Will definitely be here again. Consider making a reservation got really busy really fast. Staff was great and friendly.
Patty Connelly
The service is excellent and the food is fantastic. I especially enjoyed the ribs and braised collard greens. And the Gouda and poblano pepper mashed potatoes are delicious!! I can't wait to go back and try more menu items!
Ben Markman
The Flying Mango has bold flavors.
I eat BBQ all over these great states, and this place rates in the top 5, the only reason not top of my list is my personal preference of moisture in my meats. Great job staff. 👍🏻👍🏻
Laura Held
Great food! Come early to get a table. The jerk sauce is amazing!
Steven Beisswenger
A must for locals or anyone traveling from out of town. The food, atmosphere, and staff are unmatched in the Des Moines metro area. I recommend trying their special (if they didn't sell out by the time you are eating there) or anything else on the menu. You can't go wrong with the smoked meats and a bottle of wine.
Selig Albert
We ordered the three meat platter to sample what was available. We had ribs, brisket and chicken with grits mashed potatoes and snap peas. All the meats with exception of the chicken was dry and over cooked. I am glad I was given water because it was very dry.We were looking forward to it because Guy Fieri had recommended. Food was disappointing.
Dustin Lindgren
The smoked meats here are of the best in town. I find the sides are often lacking a bit. The candied apples aren't sweet and compared to other apple sides in town (Jethro's, Cactus Bob's) really aren't that good. The corn bread is usually pretty bland and dry. I paid an extra $2 for the chicken creole today and it had a single piece (very small piece) of chicken in it.
I love the atmosphere, I love the meats, I want to love the sides but they just come up short.
Todd Poller
Best brisket in town . Very good service .
Barbara Kilpatrick
Just spent our Anniversary at Flying Mango and was the best food and service possible. Fish was fabulous, vegetables were tasty, corn bread was amazing. We will be back many times.
Susan Fielder
I have eaten at the Flying Mango more than once and have always had awesome food and great customer service. Last Saturday I had just ordered my food when I got news that my son had been in a bad single-vehicle wreck but was totally uninjured. Thank God he wore his seat belt! Needless to say, I was pretty rattled and couldn't eat my catfish cake dinner. Chef Mike boxed it for later and didn't charge me for the meal. I was so touched by his kindness and the concern of our server. This place is the BEST! (and the catfish cake dinner was tasty even after reheating!)
Tim Mohrfeld
I want to say don't go here just so it doesn't get too crowded that I cant get in. This place is a hidden gem. The food is aw.aw.awesome. The owners and staff treat you like family. 5-Stars and 2 Thumbs up.
Jake Wilhelm
This place is a hidden gem in Iowa. Their smoked meats (especially the brisket) is phenomenal, and they always have a plethora of local brews and unique specials. Highly recommend!
Shelby Backer
The red beans and rice were amazing as well as the brisket but the chicken, ribs and corn bread were all way over done and burnt. The bbq sauce was a good mix of sweet and spicey. Honestly the best part was the environment of the place, it makes you feel like you are walking into your best friends house and their mom is cooking.
Valerie Johannsen
As a native of Texas, I've searched high and low in Des Moines for a good brisket. Nothing beats Flying Mango's! AMAZING red beans and rice as well! Service is always great! Get there right when they open to get a place to park and sit right down or you'll be parking down the street and waiting in a small area for a table to open up.
Rusty Zimmerman
First time ever trying the Flying Mango, definitely will be back. We used the call ahead option since their reserved seating was booked for the night. We showed up a little early to our desired time and got in within 10 minutes. Started with drinks from their large selection I had a bloody mary and my wife a mango margarita. Started with the appetizer of brisket quesadilla, for entrees we had brisket and triggerfish. Dessert was there bread pudding and all were extremely good. Wouldn't have changed anything.
Rory Flynn
One of my favorite places to go for good food and service. Any time you see a promotion for a live concert there you should jump on it, even if you haven’t heard of the band. Best music experience in Des Moines. Unique and delicious menu creations.
Zach Umsted
This is a delicious barbecue joint with a touch of up-scale. Service and ambience was good, food was great! The brisket just melts in your mouth.
Gene Hinders
1st Stop:
Going 4 Stars on the review as the overall experience was a positive one. The 24 Hour Brisket (I mistakenly called it the 23 Hour Brisket in my photo) was a generous portion and although a bit dry the house bbq sauce added some moisture back as well as a nice kick to the heat level. The Mrs got the Big Chop and that was delicious, nice smokey flavor to it.
For sides we had the Chicken Creole and Red Beans & Rice (both of which left me a bit wanting as there wasn't an over abundance of chicken or red beans with the rice), the Mrs sides were the cornbread and spiced apples which were both very delicious. She's a bit picky and the options available weren't ones that she was too excited about....I don't want that to be critical on the menu because they did have some variety in the choices but just not ones that she preferred.
The owner (recognized him from the TripleD show) made the rounds repeatedly checking on things at a few of the tables although not ours.
We'll stop by again at some point in the future and sample some more of the menu as I know the Mrs would like to try the chicken and I'm thinking possibly the catfish next time around.
2nd Stop:
Going 5 stars after our last visit...the Catfish and Chicken Dinners were amazing and the Creole Chicken / Red Beans & Rice sides were exceptional this go-round.
Mike stopped by the table and visited with us a bit as we had our friend Bill in from VA who's been to over 500 of the TripleD joints that are out there.
Linda Leier Thomason
Attended anniversary party at The Flying Mango. Equally impressive to food choices and quality are hospitality and service. From warm welcome at door to anniversary toast from owner, all were impressed.Honestly can't think of more cohesive team with equal service skill and talent.
Sue Hamann
We were on our way out West and decided to make a stop at a DDD.
We were not disappointed! The food and service was excellent, and Mike, the owner was a real delight. I highly recommend the BBQ! If I didn't live so far away, this place would be on our weekly night out list!
Zachary Brooks
I'm a Des Moines native and absolute foodie... The Flying Mango is hands down one of the BEST resutants in the DSM Metro. It's also one of my favorites to dine-in and enjoy.
From the incredibly clever worded menus to the owner, Mike, casually greeting and interacting those who step into his beautiful establishment; the charm of this place is unparalleled.
Whenever I have family in town or a pretty girl I'd like to make an impression on, we hit the Mango. The atmosphere is intimate and welcoming, the wait staff an absolute blast and the food to f*%#ing die for.
EVERY bite is fantastic; whether it be (24 hour) smoked brisket, the best gritts I've ever had or ribs that just fall off the bone.
I wish I would've snapped a few pictures of my last meal their. The presentation was top notch, all of our plates arrived to the table in picture perfect fashion.
I'm not one for writing reviews, but I can't think of a place more deserving of a few lines of praise than Mike, his establishment and the great staff at The Flying Mango.
Sarah Garrison
The brisket is by far the best I've ever had--super tender and didn't even need a knife to cut through. The cornbread with cinnamon butter is a great end of dinner treat👍 …
J Misel
I crave Flying Mango on a regular basis because it's such a great food place. Great atmosphere as well. If you have not been here, you are preventing yourself from one of, if not the best, dining experiences in DSM. I have not eaten anything here that I did not like.
jacob anderson
I have only gotten to eat hat the flying Mango a few times, but I was very impressed. The food is amazing and so are the people that work there. I can't recommend this place enough. Awesome!
Nick Dau
Great food, great service, warm, and friendly atmosphere. Highly recommend. Especially if you're looking for something different then the average sports bar/restaurant, pizza, or burger joint in such high volume around town.
Darryl Trapp
Been a few years, and I’ve since moved away, but OMG, the wonderful memories of meals at the Flying Mango remain. Excellent Iowa Chop, red beans and rice and white chocolate/mango bread pudding!
Monica Morrison
My boyfriend took me for my birthday, our first time trying Flying Mango, and it was delicious. Service was amazing. Will definitely be coming back again.
Kendall Myers
Was a hit or miss on the food for me. I got the jerk chicken sandwich and it was delicious with the goat cheese and the bread they used being the shining stars. However other things I tried at the table were all edible but just seemed to be lacking in flavor.
Shane Schoenhofer
This place is amazing! The food is fantastic! My wife had the brisket sandwich and I had the pork chop. Both dishes were perfect! Highly recommend
Beth Willem
ALWAYS the best food! Love the atmosphere. They are a busy place, so relax and enjoy conversation with your dinner partners. Put your cell phone away or be prepared to get chastised!
Xander Ryan
Amazing smoky flavor on the ribs. Corn bread was exquisite. The red beans and rice tastes like something out of a tale.
Frank Iannotti
My son in law and I pulled in to the lot at 9:45 pm after driving 600 + miles .They were closing at 10 for a weeks vacation and were anticipating leaving on time. They were fantastic, brought out a family sampling of what was left available. We ate and drank fresh coffee until we could not eat more. Then when we asked what the bill was they said it was on the house. We would highly recommend The Flying Mango. Thank you so much to all the staff. Happy Vacation!!!! Frank Iannotti
Mark Z
This is one of our "go to" places. Never disappointed. Expect a wait but always worth it. You'll be happy with anything on the menu, but the brisket and the ribs are a must.
Dionte' Stewart
Great food, friendly staff. Modest but fair pricing. I felt like you got what you paid for.
KEVIN BERNARD
Great food and great service, the place was busy yet everything flowed very nicely
Jody Moeller
Had the Pick 3 Platter with chicken, ribs and brisket... very good!
Ken Busby
Spendy. I had the pick 3 with brisket, andouill, and ribs. Sausage was good. It is mildly spicy but i like spice. I don't normally caste for brisket but i liked this. The sides were very good especially coller greens and blue cheese mashed. Ribs were ok. I've had better bbq but will go back for sammies.
Eric Dadmun
The Flying Mango is better than your typical barbecue place. They use fruit woods instead of the typical hickory chips to barbecue their meats which adds a unique flavor. They also have interesting twists on typical fixin's like their goat cheese grits which are spectacular. My personal recommendation is the sampler platter so you can try three different meats and a side. This is one of the best places to eat in Des Moines.
Chris Monroe
Frist off our waiter drew was amazing get this guy a raise.....food was worth every penny. FOOD WAS AMAZING. Me and the gf went there for.dinner. best hidden gem in the city.
Stu Hald
One of the finest meals of my life... I wish I lived close enough to be a regular. Very friendly and cheerful staff. The place is a little loud and crowded but the did and ambiance are amazing.
Allison Smith
The food here is amazing and unlike anything I've ever eaten in Des Moines! The atmosphere is so cozy. This is a great place for date night, family dinner or even a night out with friends.
Chris Acosta
I’m gonna go out on a limb and say this place was overrated food wise. Vibe and service were great though.
Rick Condon
So many things on the menu that knock me out!! Deliciously prepared. My favs are the ribs, the Jenny salad, the half chicken, the cajon chicken and thick cut bacon sandwich, the garlic shrimp and black pepper fettuccini, the mussels ...and more.
Brian Peck
Wings were awsome. The Brisket was tear apart with a fork moist. Bread pudding was great. I need to come back to this place more often.
Keith Wilges
We are residents northwest of Des Moines and dine at Flying Mango regularly. We love it and gotta have it! We brought family visiting from Raleigh, NC and Chanhassen, MN. They loved the ribs and brisket.
Georgie Libbie
I'm trying to eat light, so was bummed at the thought of eating a salad while my friends were all eating bbq. Was so delighted when I took my first bite of my grilled chicken salad....it was amazing!! Can't wait for the next time!
Marco Smith
Great food and great service. First time customers on New Years Eve. Will definitely be back.
Rachel Buckingham
Lynn, our server was so friendly! She was super helpful, great with kids and knowledgeable about the menu! We had a great birthday celebration for my father!
Morgan Hart
I had what Guy had was so delicious could not finish my food
Kevin
I caught this place on The Food Network, as featured on DDD / AKA DINERS, DRIVE INS AND DIVES by Guy Fioretti..... about 6 months ago.
It looked awesome, but that was six months ago...I was worried the "Honeymoon" might be over before I could stop in.
Guess what....
IT AINT......!!!
LORD HAVE MERCY.....!!
I was KO'd by:
The 3 Meat dinner:
24hr Smoked Brisket (x 2 portions), Pork Baby Back ribs, White Chedder Cheese Grits and Poblano Mashed Potatoes....with Garlic Baguettes!!
Brisket:
Lean, fork tender and perfect!
Pork Baby Back Ribs:
Tender, flavor down to the bone!
Grits:
As good as we make em' in Florida!
Mashed Potatoes:
Better than we make in Florida!
Braised Collard Greens:
Just as tender, tasty and delicious as my own Momma makes....
(but 2 x the meat... SSSssshhhhhh!!!!)
Waiter:
Drew....a true professional, whom must have the easiest serving job in the business. Afterall, this food makes it all perfect!!!
Straight up, place is LEGIT.....!
Krista Kielty
Love this restaurant! They have great food and great service. More importantly they have very tasty and a wonderful variety of gluten free offerings! Highly recommended!
Lori Wiser
The aroma grabs you on your way inside. I think I gained 10 pounds just waiting to be seated. The food is amazing, as is the atmosphere. A must visit!
Reecha
Our waiter was super nice. The food was okay.. Our mixed drinks were a huge disappointment. The long island was just a mix and the gin and tonic had practically no gin.
James Nichols
Consistently good, not a bad thing on the menu. The brisket is a cut above the rest though. The owner is great and funny. Great atmosphere.
Kaitlin Woodward
Love this place!! Their catfish is fabulous. Can't wait to come back.
Thomas McCullough
I was raised on Cajun food as a Louisiana kid, moved to Texas and am a self-appointed bar-b-que expert. Flying Mango is the best restaurant in the Des Moines metroplex. It's true to the flavors of two culinary recognized states - Louisiana Cajun and Texas Bar-B-Q .
David Cook
Time and Time again this place has been my favorite restaurant for special occasions. For instance their Valentine's day menu is off the charts. Beautiful and tasteful food for the win!
Carmen Clark
Great food and people...small place with big portions and the best cornbread you have ever had. The brisket is fork tender and the specials never disappoint!
Tamera Page
Flying Mango has a fantastic staff with incredibly delicious food. They make the best red beans and rice that I have ever eaten. I highly recommend this place.
Chris Heidemann
Amazing food combining comfort style barbecue smoked meat and Cajun style. The sampler is a good way to try a lot of variety.
Scott Yates
Can't wait to go back!
Ryan Russell
Greatest restaurant experience i’ve ever had, start to finish!
Debra Beloungy
Delish!!! Food waa amazing
Server could have been a little friendlier but food waa GREAT!! Did make a 6:00 reservation and got in at 7. That was a bit disappointing. Stars are for food and drinks!!
Brenda Christensen
Combination platter let's you have 3 of your favorites. Yum yum!!!!! Best red beans and rice I've had in the Midwest.
Bob DeLange
Good food . Great atmosphere.
Richard Goodrich
Food: Excellent, innovative, well worth the money. Service: Professional, smooth, friendly. One of my top 5 places to eat in Des Moines.
cedric wooledge
I worked in a smoke house 5 years and haven't had brisket at a restaurant that was as good as the flying mango's... The head chef on their website was out in the dining room meeting and greating.
Amanda Laverman
Always absolutely delicious. Our favorite place to celebrate. Brisket, cajun catfish and potati of the day are always great.
Raquel Sullivan
Five stars! Amazing service, quality time, money well-spent! Great staff and the food is impressively good - chicken creole A+
John Strawn
THE best spot in Des Moines for a romantic dinner. Great food and service. Owner takes a lot of pride and personally visits your table.
Jeffrey Bradford
This is opportunity to enjoy a taste of New Orleans without leaving the metro. 24 hour brisket and a great bottle of wine. Yes! Yes! Yes!
Curt Brooks
Great food and service, thanks!!
Chase Elder
The BBQ here is phenomenal. Hands down the best I have ever had. Their classic cocktail list is also impressive.
Thomas Notaro
Very solid menu and good representation of southern cuisine. Food is in line with price point and expectations. Would dine here again.
miles starkey
By far our favorite restaurant in Des Moines. The 24 hour smoked brisket is amazing, the potato of the day is always interesting, and the corn bread with butter is like dessert for us.
Todd Mason
Great food and service. Plus the owner personally visits each table and thanks you for coming. Our DSM fav! Try it.... you'll like it!
Jocelyn Miller
We had a great meal here, with excellent service. The mango salsa is just right. A real find with a relaxed atmosphere and reasonable prices.

We stopped for dinner after taking in the Drake Relays pole vault across the street and we're glad we did. Des Moines has a number of top notch restaurants and Splash is surely near the top.

Not sure why every review is not 5 stars. Been eating here for the past 5 years and never had an even remotely bad experience. For smoked food it is by far the best in town and the service is always top notch. Never got the bill and felt like I didn't get what I paid for either.
Mike Nicewarner
