Reviews of J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works
Alfons Müller
Beautiful little store with self-produced saltbased goods and also an amazing selection of different goods from the local Appalachian region. We came spontaneously on a road trip through the area and visited the Salt-Works. While the production area was not open for a visit, the store and the very nice staff provided us with some highlights. We got flavored salt, caramel sauce and a cherry barbeque sauce. The selection was very impressive and inspiring. Overall a real gem - if we are back in the area we will for sure stop by again.

This historic gem in WV is a beautiful venue for your wedding! From the greenhouses to the private family farm, there are so many photo opps! We love photographing weddings here. You’re so close to downtown Charleston for lodging options for out of town guests while still feeling tucked away on your Big Day! Highly recommend.

Interesting free tour of the facilities where you learn about the mining of salt in West Virginia from ancient seas, it's history and importance in America as well as it's function in today's products and culinary world. It was worth the stop. 👍 …

I am guilty of grabbing Morton’s table salt from the store shelf without much thought or even choosing the generic store brand salt because hey…it’s usually cheaper. Salt is salt, right? After my visit at JQ Dickinson I found out not all salts are equal.
JQ Dickinson not only makes and sells their hand processed specialty salts, they also offer a really interesting free tour to see their salt making process first hand.
JQ Dickinson salt exclusively uses a solar evaporation method and heavily relies on Mother Nature (sun and wind) to shoulder most of the work. Sun houses that look like greenhouse rooms are used in the salt making process to safely store brine as Mother Nature sets out to do her job. Because salt making at JQ Dickinson relies heavily on the sun and temperature, salt crops are only harvested in the Spring, Summer, and Fall.
They sell a variety of flavors salt products in their gift shops or you can find them online at jqdsalt.com. Check it out, take a tour, and learn about the business that is rich with American history.

This place was unique. It has really good sauces, spices and salts. It even has an in-store resuraunt and sales alcoholic drinks as well. Definitely a fine visit.

We went as part of a tour, and learned some fascinating history of the facility and the region. The guide was friendly and informative and gave time for questions. The tour ended at the Gift Shop. Another great place with excellent selection, unique merchandise and friendly people. They also play host to private parties and events,so be sure and check out this local hidden treasure and all their purchasable wares. Highly recommend.

We've been photographing weddings at JQ Dickinson Salt-Works for years and it's one of the best wedding venues in the Charleston area. The history of this place is so cool, and being able to take couples into the salt rooms always produces some truly unique, creative wedding photos. We love working here and always look forward to our next visit! IG: @theoberports

Excellent place to stop and take a few minutes! Take the tour! It is free and will not take up your day. Learn a bit about how you get salt on your table. Very interesting. Nice store where they sell their products and be sure to say Hi to Butterbean.

Great Appalachian products and even better salt. I can't wait to come back when they are doing tours again. I look forward to the end of lockdown when they can resume their full public face.
Updating my review, July 2021. My daughter and I got the free tour through the facility. It's a nice foray into the craft of salt extraction and a bit of history about why it started.

This place is really something to see. This business has been in the family for seven generations and they still use traditional methods for their production. The gift shop offers an interesting array of local salt, honey, wood crafts, and such. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. The grounds are impressive as well
Maxine Gordon
What a delightful shop! The owner/manager gave us a wonderful verbal tour as the grounds outside were wet and muddy. Purchases included Gingseng &Elderberry Maple Syrup, a trio of salts (Heirloom. Smoked and Ramp) and 2 small pouches of "Dr. Dickinson's All Natural Nigari.
If you are in the area do stop by to "get a glimpse" of the talent in the Appalachians.

If you're looking for a unique and outdoorsy wedding venue near Charleston, WV, then J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works is the venue for you. My husband and I got married here last September and we couldn't have been happier with the venue, its staff, and our overall experience.
We had our wedding on the lawn, which easily fit 100 people, and our reception under the nearby (by nearby I mean like, 50 steps) pavilion, which looks beautiful at night under its string lights. Although it's next to a road, the landscaping truly makes the property feel secluded.
I got ready in the log-cabin-esque building, which had plenty of space for me and my wedding party. The building is well decorated and it includes a kitchen should your baker/caterer need it to store their goods. It also has bathrooms and a porch available to guests throughout the day.
Marie and Ashton (J.Q.'s wedding experts) were 100% helpful and available the second we booked our date. I honestly don't know what we would have done without them...
They helped me select our rentals (in-house), plan our seating chart, order our alcohol, schedule our servers and bartenders...they were the reason why our wedding day moved so seamlessly from setting up, organizing vendors, moving the events along, tending bar, you name it.
10/10 would get married here again.

If you want an outdoor and uniquely charming wedding venue in Charleston, J.Q. Dickinson is hands down THE place. I grew up in Charleston but my wife and I reside in Austin, TX and we were nervous about planning from across the country but JQ’s staff quickly eased our stress because they were so attentive, responsive, and understanding of what we envisioned. We worked with Marie and Ashton for a little over a year to plan our October 2018 wedding. Both Marie and Ashton helped to weave our ideas into the a perfectly flowing evening. The ceremony was held in the garden, then we proceeded to the front of the bungalow for cocktail hour and around to the covered area for dinner and dancing. I loved how JQD allows it’s clients to piece together their wedding package with the a la carte style rather than many other places that make you pay for things you don’t want or need (also, the overall pricing is affordable in comparison to many other venues). We were able to rent a lot of amenities directly from them - heaters (at the last minute!), lights, a fire pit, chairs, glassware, the list goes on...it was a great bonus to not have to deal with so many individual vendors. We also had the freedom to bring in outside catering and other rentals. Throughout the evening the staff checked in with us and our guests often and we felt more than accommodated. It’s location is only 10-15 minutes from downtown Charleston and they have plenty of parking, although we had a shuttle for our guests and that was a huge plus. The setting was perfect for our fall WV feel and we couldn’t have imagined it going more smoothly. Thanks JQD for helping our wedding dreams come true, we can’t wait to visit again soon!
PS I can’t go without mentioning how initially nervous we were to hold an LGBTQ wedding in WV and from day one we always felt 100% welcomed by JQ Dickinson. They never made us feel different or anything other than a couple in love and I can’t say enough how much that truly means to us.

Stopped in to learn about Salt Works. It was fascinating to learn how salt is made. Our tour guide was fun, informative and enthusiastic. The gift shop is not to be missed
Marjorie Stern
My daughter recently moved to Charleston and I was visiting her with a friend. We had a great tour with Carly who was doing everything that day. I am a salt lover anyway and there were so many different types to choose from and other interesting local prodcuts.
Richard McClincy
We went to experience some history and learn a little bit about the history of Charleston WV. Honestly it was amazing to learn about the salt production in WV! Who knew anything about Salt Furnace! Look it, and them, up.
MT Welsch (Vagabond Chef)
JQD is an awesome spot to visit, their story is amazing, and the salt itself is the best I've ever worked with. We are so fortunate to have them in our state.
Thanks for all you do, guys!

Wow, I learned so much on a tour of this place!! I never knew there was a salt water sea beneath the Appalachian mountains. Water is pumped using a well that is almost 400 feet deep. Initially, it is brownish red with iron. A series of evaporation, filtration, and crystallization processes separates salt with 40+ minerals from the water. The salt is sold to cosmetics companies, restaurants, qnd in the on-location gift shop. Amazing trip, well worth it.
Tony Guzman
The location and operation is smaller than expected. The tour was very interesting and informative. The store had all their products and well organized.
Karrie Fritz
Nice tour. Lots of history about the business and the area. Cute little shop, with tastings.
Carol N.
Visited during a business trip to the area and I would recommend it. Loved all the local items in addition to the interesting variety of salts. Picked up several salts to give as gifts and the cashier gave us cards to include about the history. It was winter, but I could tell that the grounds will be full of flowers and plants in the spring and summer- i will return in the future for that just as much as the salts.

Charleston, if my memory serves from going through one of their tours, this is the longest continuously operating salt works in the country, over 100yrs., right there in Malden, WV. Their product is incredible, the smoked salt is amazing, and they even have a Ramp flavor that works very well on any steak!
Not only do they hand-manufacture the salt, package and ship internationally, they also have an on-site store open every week day and on Saturdays. In addition, they put on a salt-fest each year and have become a great destination for large events. The website and its great pics barely do the facility justice, you have to go and see for yourself.
We've been to several large weddings and other various "foodie" functions there w/o a single complaint. They have indoor space but the real experience is eating the most amazing food outside, on farm tables, in several beautiful settings.
The Kanawha Valley has a diamond in the rough. And anyone who loves history, food and good times should put this place on their list.
ralph toombs
With all the phoney fraudulent hype masquerading in the stream of commerce, the simple truth about a simple product rises above expectations, even as in this case where an actual phenomenal story about the origin of this salt is only a prelude to the incredible flavor
Elizabeth Weest
This place is not only stunning, they also have amazing family oriented staff. The staff carries themselves in such a beautiful prideful way. They are beyond knowledgeable and answer all questions you have! Their gift shop boutique is full of goodies and amazing salt products! I will continue to stop by to stock my cabinets with the salt and delicious treats they have!
Joel Wallen
Great place. Definitely worth stopping by. If their staff is really accommodating and they offer a free tour of their facilities. They are samples also are really delicious!

We have taught many couples to dance their wedding dance. Many of them were married and had their reception at J. Q. Dickinson. It is a lovely venue. We love seeing the videos and photos of how much fun our couples had at their wedding. Charleston WV Dance.

Learned of this company at the Food and Craft Beverage Fair in Beckley this summer.
Visiting family wanted something to do and we decided to go visit the Salt Works after seeing they offer daily tours.
Easy drive from Princeton, charming and quaint setting. Lovely grounds and main building. We were able to take a hands on tour for 15$, but they also offer free tours.
The hands on tour allows you to harvest your own salt. Very informative tour, neat process of harvesting from the aquifer from the source to the packaging. Really enjoyed the tour guide and the tasting. Purchased several items from the shop. Look forward to bringing more friends and family to this unique venue. I would love to provide in their seasonal Farm to Table Dinners. They host events and weddings too.
Hope they get a restaurant in the future!
Hooray for local family owned, multi generational businesses.
Brady Campbell
We attended a dinner here recently and thought the venue was very relaxing and unique. We got the tour of the salt works which began with a history lesson, the salt procurement process, and to the final products. All of the staff were pleasant and courteous. The gardens looked great and the dining area is a superb location for a truly West Virginia experience.
Rob O'Connor
J. Q. Dickinson Salt-Works is an outstanding local business. Harvesting sea salt locally, from the ancient ocean that lies deep underneath the mountains of West Virginia, they're a locally owned and operated business. They have a great store on site selling their salt - called finishing salt - and other salt-related products. They also have occasional dinners, lovely farm-to-table events, served outdoors on the property. Prepared by local chefs, the dinners are definitely worth the effort, and support local charities.
Marrilee Chamberlain

I was there for a wedding planning meeting. The folks are very helpful and thorough, and the facilities are great for outdoor weddings. I also attended a dinner previously. The food was excellent and the tour of the Saltworks is very interesting.
Nick Schaer
Living History at its best. The historic salt works have been revived in Malden West Virginia. The first new salt well in over 100 years supplies natural brine water to greenhouse drying buildings. They produce the finest natural salt in the county. Carrying on a family tradition that has roots over 150 years in the making.
Stephanie Coleman
Take the tour and order a boxed lunch. I had 20 family members in town for graduation. They enjoyed the ride from Charleston to Malden and the lovely setting for lunch. The tour provided a nice educational bonus.
