Great park with incredible history! I stayed here at the beginning of November on a weekend and was shocked by how busy it was for the time of year.
They have great campsites and a ton to choose from too. Lots of tent sites & RV sites. Amazingly helpful & friendly staff, great camp shop with all kinds of useful camping stuff & souvenirs. They sell firewood too for $6. I really liked the camp office where they have a great small exhibition on the history of the First Landing Site. I couldn't believe the history of this place, pretty awesome.
Not sure if they do this every day but every morning, they have a little wake up call around 8am I think, with a little trumpet tune followed by the national anthem. Never had that experience before on a campsite! Ha but I kinda liked it...I was there on a weekend so maybe it was a weekend thing.
The campground has easy access to the beach, lots of surfers and kite surfers there which was quite fun to watch, plus, very close proximity to some great trails!
I was on my way to the Outer Banks and was only meant to stay one night here, I ended up staying for 3 nights to wait out a Nor'easter storm. Great overall campsite for holding up for a few days.
Only downside is I found the price a tad high for a standard site, but to be honest, it was worth the price for the great amenities available.
They also have showers, the showers near the 1st loop were cold but other showers had hot water.
Great stay all in all! Safe & beautiful woodsy campground.

Favorite state park in Virginia. Well maintained facilities and grounds with a friendly and helpful staff.
Don't miss the sunsets as they are epic on most nights and a great way to end a day on the beach at any time if the year!

One of the best campgrounds I’ve been to!
And I’ve been to a lot of campgrounds. This will be one of my shortest reviews and there’s NO bad things to say.
This is one the pricier side of campgrounds but it is well worth it!
Starting off, your site is HUGE. When. I say HUGE I mean you literally have your own private backyard. Large space to fit atleast 2 vehicles, maybe 3. You could likely fill your site with 5-6 mid sized tents no problem. Your site will have a bench and fire pit. You can choose to upgrade and get electrical hook ups.
The campground has relatively clean and well-lit bathhouses. Open 24/7. The showers in particularly are very large in size.
In terms of facilities and accessibility, there are several boardwalks to the beach. The boardwalk behind the main office is DISABILITY FRIENDLY! Full ramp boardwalks with tracks on beach up to the water if you have a wheelchair. There is a gift shop/convenience store on property which I didn’t get a chance to check out. And there is GOOD security. You’ll see staff drive their vehicle around the property atleast once in 30 mins. It’s very reassuring. There is also several nearby and convenient running water spots which are drinking-friendly.
If you have time, go for a drive 20 mins south of the site and you’ll see a beautiful touristy area with white hotels and beach houses. It’s so beautiful.

With its combo of beach and live oak/pine forest, this is a great place to camp. Nice facilities, too. The one drawback is that some campsites are very close to Rt 60 so you can see and hear the cars non stop. It probably won't prevent you from sleeping, but it does mean you won't hear the peaceful night-time noises of a more remote campsite.

Excellent park to camp in. Wonderfully clean bathhouses. Awesome sites. Perfect across to beach and woods. Water/power hookups.
Definitely recommend!
Richard Hages
Nice sites, nice staff, I’ll come back again. Couple of the bath/shower houses were DOA and closed off. No work was being done while we were there, this should have been a priority for repair especially with full summer occupancy.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The campsite with RV are spacious and surrounded with beautiful trees. Wonderful trails and the beaches are easily accessible by boardwalks.
Mark Gates
Great campground right on the water. Even though it was super windy our campsite was mostly protected and we were able to have a nice campfire.
Susan Jones My Family's Place
GREAT camping eith the ocean steps away. Definitely recommend for fellow campers and beach lovers!!! Very close to Virginia Beach. Has great views for sites!! Family oriented. A beautiful place to relax and swim.
French Blonde
Wanted to camp but not open yet for a few more weeks. It’s mid February. Lots of sites for all size rigs. Electric and water and a few tent sites. The beach is wonderful and spacious. Definitely coming back!

Camping sites are really good and they give a bench and fire bowel to make fire.
Bathrooms are okay.
Make sure you carry insect repellent
Do not choose the sites which are closer to highway
You’ll hear a lot of vehicle noise at night and also it gets really cold at night
You can park your car where you camp
Starting rate is $40 for 2nights
Camp rangers are friendly and helpful and also there’s a camp store however it’s little expensive
Dave Steeves
Well used State Park. Very attentive staff, quite beach and lots of trails. Nice visitors center and well stocked camp store gift shop.

The campground is beautiful. The sites are spacious. There are several different types of sites. From RV, yurt, to tent camping, there is something for everyone. The camp store has ice and other essentials. Some of the sites have one small issue, they are next to a sewer vent and when the wind blows just right/wrong...well, you get the idea.

Great campground just around the corner from the ocean and on the bay. Water is close and the camp sites are fairly private. If you are tint camping and want more privacy I suggest getting one of the RV sites with the water and electric hook up. They have more space and more shrubbery and trees to block you from other campers. Bath houses were clean.

Great park w intriguing biome. Over 20 miles of trails between bald cypress marshes w hanging Spanish Moss and towering pines, and bayshore marshes. The trails are easy & moderate; level, sandy, w pine needles. Maps are available at entrance. We hiked 7 miles along Osmanthus, Bald Cyprus, High Dune, Fox Run, Lone Creek, Kingfisher, Cape Henry trails. Love to do this again.
Jake Mahoney
The natural beauty of this park is absolutely stunning, and nearly all of the campsites are more ‘deep’ than wide. The Live Oak trees make daisy-chains and hanging virtually anything a breeze.
We stayed in a tent site and saw many other tent campers with a good 50:50 ration between tent:RV guests. Other visitors were very friendly and focused on themselves and the whole park seemed to buzz during the day (Note: this is definitely a BUSY campground).
** The only con, which for me was a biggy for me having visited many campgrounds were the extreme need for updating/civilizing the bathrooms (or perhaps at least enclosing them). If you’re someone who is afraid of pooping next to spiders or freaked out by nasty bathrooms in general, this is definitely something to think about!
For such an extremely
Overall the beauty of the park was profound and we enjoyed our visit.

Amazing campground. Huge sites for all size rigs, water, and electric. At times it feels like we have the place to ourselves
Jen Sylvester (Jen Sylvester NASM CPT)
Clean campground. Friendly. Close to the beach. Would come here again except maybe not in July when it's 104 degrees. It's nice that they have water and electric hookups for the campers. That was a plus. The flies bite and leave itchy bites like mosquitos. That was unfortunate.

Love this campground! If you are in a tent, the closer to the water, the better. Otherwise, you can hear the noise from the road.
We have stayed in 169 and 186, loved them both. There was shade, a lot of room for the kids to run around and play in the sand. The picture is from site 186.
Travis Stauffer
We love this campground! There is an eclectic selection of campsites with different sizes and layouts. The bathrooms are close to the sites within a reasonable walking distance. The showers and bathroom are cleaned daily.
The bay is very close and accessible. They have a great visitor’s center with educational programs for kids that are unique to the area, including catching fish with a large net, how to start fires, how to identify different kinds of fish and wildlife indigenous to the area, etc.
There is a camp store that is well stocked and has reasonable prices.
The campground is minutes from the Virginia Beach boardwalk and beach front and shops.
The only cons are it can be loud because the campsites are close to a busy road and right next to a Naval base where helicopters can (and have) done drills in the middle of the night directly over the campground. Other than that this place is highly recommended!
Tina B
Great place to go camping! Staff was friendly, the campground was clean as well as the bathrooms. Private showers that also clean and updated. The beach (bay side)connects to the back of the campground! The campsites are huge and the rates are unbelievably cheap!
Cyn Walk
Pretty cool to wake up and see a family of coyotes in the dunes. We pitched our tent in the sand directly over the dunes (on the bay side). Our site was pretty secluded, only a short walk away from the beach access, where we watched a breathtaking sunset over the water
Erin Flores
My family LOVES coming here! We each get neighboring RV sites and just unwind together so we all have water on site and access for electrical if needed. The bathrooms are clean and maintained, the sites are roomy, and it's close enough to the ocean side of things to put a day or two aside to chill with the bigger waves if we want.
Leslie Rueff
We’ve been camping here for years and it’s always been enjoyable. We’ve camped with a smaller pop up and a larger RV. The bath houses are simpler and at times (I’m sure depending on the hosts) less clean than we’ve experienced in other state parks, but nothing remarkable enough to lower my 5 star review. The outstanding points are the beach, of course, which is always spacious enough even when camping is booked up, and the layout of the grounds/sites. We always feel we have enough space and privacy. The clientele is generally two types: families with kiddos or retired folks with dogs.

Sites were huge! Amazing location. Wasn't prepared for the helicopters taking off at 0200 but hey that's the price you pay for freedom.

This park is probably my favorite because it's such a special ecosystem and a calming, rejuvenating atmosphere. The cabins are rustic and simple, encouraging time down outdoors.
I would have left 5 stars except that as an interface between people and nature, there are some missed opportunities to educate and facilitate an eco-minded lifestyle. The main dichotomy I saw were the expensive electric vehicles, which may or may not be more eco-friendly than normal vehicles. Meanwhile there was no opportunity to compost kitchen scraps, which end up in landfills creating greenhouse gases. Another problem was that the recycling was all the way across the park. When I was packing out for 9am (the early checkout time seems excessive given they have a whole extra day to clean bc of covid measures), my boomer parents got overwhelmed by the time and our full car and decided to throw out all the recycling we had painstakingly cleaned and sorted. My final note is that all the lights in the cabins save in the bathroom are fluorescent and very blue, which is harsh on the eye and messes with natural circadian rhythms and hormones. This last one is more a pet peeve that there are no calming lights at night.
My suggestion is that the cabins be a hub of eco-minded travel, with a seamless, convenient way to recycle and compost. A list of bus routes and times on the fridge would be nice to encourage eco friendly travel while we're visiting.
There could also be a list of local produce and grass fed meat suppliers such as B&L Market and The Village Butcher in the list of local food in the cabin visitor book.
It's obvious the cabins are doing the bare minimum. I hope the parks will consider using this opportunity to effect positive change in the minds of their citizens.

My wife, dog Khloe and I got to experience our first camping at the beach here. We can honestly say there are no cons. Almost every campsite is unique, and ours was so cool looking. Being able to wake up and walk less than 100 yards to the ocean was amazing. The convenience of the shop made getting fire wood, ice, coffee, snacks, ice cream, and much more just a short walk away. Our dog had a great time, as this was her first beach trip. The sands are soft and not covered with shells; however, be careful when traveling through the dunes. There are sand spurs but they were not bad. We even got to see some dolphins and plenty of sand crabs, by the hundreds. We highly recommend this place to camp and enjoy the beach. The staff and environment was very welcoming. We will be back!!!

Very rustic. Bath house we used could use a good remodel. Beach is nice.

Had a great stay at First Landing.
Staff were friendly and helpful.
Sites have water and electric. No black hookups but this is not a surprise as it is stated on the website.
The biggest drawback is for those sites on the road side are right on the road so it can get noisy. The sites near the ocean see much quieter and the yurts look really cool.
The south end of the campground is next to the Ft. Story military base. There were a couple of nights they seemed to be training with helicopters and this increased the background noise if this is bothersome for you. Also a little tight getting into site 27 but overall this is a really cool campground.
The campground is next to the beach and a short walk. Would definitely stay again.

The park staff was very friendly and helpful. No problems using the online reservation system and later later checking at the visitor center. The bathhouse facilities were also good along with other park amenities. The beach was great, plenty of room and nice view of the bay. One problem I had were how close the tents sites were to each other, no real privacy and you can hear casual conversations from other campers. Along with Highway 60 (Shore Drive) going through the middle of the park grounds, you can hear all the vehicle traffic speeding by; so avoid tent sites next to the highway! Another compliant I had were the other campers! I know this generally out of the control of park staff but I will never understand why some people feel it is necessary to blast their car stereos for hours. I went camping to hear nature and not 70’s classic rock. Oh and finally, watch out when a troop of Boy Scouts setup camp nearby. For an organization that claims to be based on good “Christian values”, I never heard a more unruly and foul mouth bunch of teenagers than that day. In the end, we still plan to come back but just going to get a campsite closer to the beach.
Chris Varnell
Great time camping in tents. Well kept bathrooms and showers. Good access to water and the ocean. Nice beach.
Elizabeth Conner
We has a blast with our Cub Scout pack! The hiking was enjoyable and so many things to see. Trails are well marked, the bathrooms and bathhouses are really clean and well maintained. Not too far from the beach.
I plan on going back again!
Karen
LOVED this campground! You can walk to the beach. It's a state park so no tank but we did have water and electric. For a little more privacy, recommend staying on the left side of the park.
All Phase Landscape & Building Services, Inc.
We like First Landing. Some of the sites are a bit tight but it has a good proximity to area attractions and is situated directly on the Bay. If You have a very large rig you should do your research and be very selective on the sites. Good camp store and dump station.
Jeff Jorgensen
Love this place! We camp here as often as work and school permits. They have basic camp sites for tents that have no electricity or water all the way to the style for those that want electricity and water.
They have a dump station but no sewer at the camp sites. The only down side is the amount of mosquitos that are out on the warmer nights is very high so bring bug repellent.
Easy walk to the beach from every campsite, at least the ones that we have stayed at. Our 3 year old son loves the beach and I dont think there is ever a time I have been worried about current being too strong.
We highly recommend!!
James McDonold
First Landing is a really neat place. Many different options for campsites. Being on the edge of the dune is so cool. We set up a tent for the grandkids and they loved it. We had anitgravity chairs under the live oaks and a hammock to boot. Their camp store is well equipped and the beach is always cool.

Awesome park! Beautiful beach, park staff is helpful and friendly. It was tight for our 41 ft motorhome, but no regrets for coming there. Stayed in 2 different spots.
Lacey Gwinn
Perfect family vacation staying in a cabin, hiking the swamp & relaxing on the beach with the crabs
Lorna Cole
Great campsites, very close to the beach, quiet and clean.

This is one of my favorite state parks. The beach is beautiful, great for families, the waves are small and good for children. The trails are really nice... Supermarket 1 mile. Great place to camp
Brandon Nutter
Family and pet friendly beach front park. Staff is friendly. Rangers patrol frequently. Showers are clean and free. Spacious sites with room for 2 cars, tents and trees for hammocks.
Chloe Bergman-Ray
We really enjoyed our stay at this campground - the sites are spacious and covered in beautiful trees. You can walk to the beach, and there are many hiking/biking trails right nearby. Saw some beautiful sunsets at the beach.

Great Campground right on the beach. We'll definitely be back.
Pee Brain
Nice campground. Great space between sites. Very friendly staff and camp hosts. We were a bit surprised on the expense versus what you got.
Lauren Krupinski
The camp sites are large, spacious and offer a lot of privacy. It was a short walk from my site to a bathroom or down to the beach.
Maddalena Shenkerman
Really positive experiences here, we usually return once a year. Lots to do and see. There are frequent flooded sites and tons of mosquitos though so don’t forget to pack extra bug spray!
Amit Naik
Went with a friend. Stayed the night at a campsite. Brought lots of bug spray. We ate on the beach, there was a full moon, and when you lay on the beach at night little sand crabs crawl on by. Epic quiet, you feel secluded.
Angaleann Higgins
We are always happy when camping at First Landing State Park. Between the trails, dog friendly beach, and close to everything how could you not be in love with this place. We are already looking forward to coming back!
Gary Gagnon
Sites are all mostly private. Some road noise from Rt 60, but if the site is on the ocean side, the waves can drown out there traffic.
Jeff A.
Very nice State Park. RV sites are on the small side, but good privacy. Grear beach and trail access. They need to trim overhead branches on the access roads
Stanley
Fun to camp but camp hosts left trash at our campsite (dog bowl and dog poop) but they got lots of stuff to do so one mistake doesn't ruin it. We had a blast
Natalia Lukatskaya
Absolutely loved our time here! Clean showers and bathrooms, 5 minutes away from the nice beach, plenty of space and privacy.
bmacdermod
Wife and I have camphosted there in Sept and Oct since 2012 and have always enjoyed it. It is the most popular park in VA because of not only the beach but the campground itself is very nice and is run by very efficient staff.
Matthew Maxin
Great rv park within walking distance to the beach.
Nelson Herr
Recently renovated check in!!! Very nice woman employee walked us out to RV. in rain storm!!!
Clinton Lewis
Nice camp ground. Facilities were good only gripe is that the mosquitoes are horrendous but with where it is located and the natural area on the other side of the road it is no wonder. Bring lots of spray.
Megan Gusler
Very neat

Jerry Campbell
Nice campground. Good staff clean facilities.
Maxine Putze
Nice quiet place to chill with space between your neighbors. Always get a site away from Shore Dr side for quietness. Cool trees for kids to climb.
Marilyn Keegan
Nice place to stay. Sites are a bit tight and boardwalks to beach need work and are tricky to find from the beach. Still worth visiting.
