Great little garden to take a nice stroll. It is located in between a couple of houses, and it is not out in the open like a big open park setting would be. However, it is very well compressed into a nice peaceful stroll. There are benches throughout to sit on, and lots of different rock sculptures and scriptures on rocks you could take the time to read. You could even find a bench to sit on and just enjoy the flower garden. No cost to get in, donations accepted, and it is handicap ♿️ accessible.

This little garden is so special and unique. I'm not from this area so I'm not sure of the back story here. But the vibe is very peaceful and almost reverent. We went there on such a gorgeous day that the entire garden seemed to sparkle. I love everything about this place. If you like unusual and off the beaten path folk art you might find these gardens as wonderfully intriguing and mysterious as I do.

If you are looking for an interesting park to visit while in Salt Lake City Gilgal is it! I had been here before and there were homeless people sleeping and a mess in there. This time around the landscape looks amazing! It looks like they really have been taking care of this park. We enjoyed walking around and reading all about the interesting sculptures, seeing butterflies, and all the beautiful flowers!

Very nice, small garden with several rock sculptures and flowering plants. I took two stars because it was a mile long walk from the hotel at a 100 degrees temperature and we did it because it looked like it was going to be, um, more. If you are nearby and can go there to breath in and out on a regular basis, I am sure it can be a refreshing stop. But it is not worth going out of you way if you only have a limited amount of time in Salt Lake City.

Wonderful, lovely experience! This sculpture garden really is a hidden gem and a must see when visiting SLC. There was plenty of free parking available near the entrance and the entrance is clearly labeled, although tucked between homes. There are free pamphlets at the start of the garden, be sure to grab one of these so you can get some more insight into each sculpture. It was so peaceful here and such a unique experience! Definitely recommend checking it out and as a bonus, it's free to visit and dog friendly! Just make sure to keep those pups on a leash and the area free from waste.

This was interesting, if small. It is very arty, but also slightly creepy. There are bible verses engraved in the artworks and paving stones all around, so it is heavily Christian themed. I would have liked it to be a bit bigger, but as small as it is, it is a good way to spend an hour in SLC.

It was cool! I thought it would be larger. Definitely not the best place for dogs but we were lucky, there were not a lot of people when we went so our dog wasn't as crazy. Our daughter liked exploring a little and smelling the flowers. Just had to make sure she didn't climb on the rocks that were art. It is definitely a cool place to see which I had never known about. It is very peaceful and quiet.

Wow... What a hidden gem... This place was really cool. Was trying to find something free to do with my boys and we went and checked this place out. It was worth the drive. Beautiful little place. Well cared for gardens. Lots of unique flowers and plants and even more unique sculptures 😊. I loved the creativity and unique style of the artist. His creativity combined with his pain for the inspiration he finds in scriptures and poetry... I loved it. We spent about 20 minutes here and it was enough for my boys... But would have loved to have spent some more time and read everything engraved in all the stones.

Amazingly pretty and clean! Super nice landscaping and gardening surrounding the suberb masonry art! Was totally alone at 10am. It was so peaceful and beautiful!

This place was quite peculiar but, honestly, very peaceful and beautiful. The flowers and the gardens are breathtaking and very fragrant.. The community does maintain the place very well. We ended up meeting a little Kitty that was roaming in there and after some contacts we figured it was rescued and reunited to its family. That was great news!

The Gilgal Sculpture Garden is a fun and unique expression of the religious faith of Thomas Child, Jr. (1888-1963). Child went to great lengths to find and transport boulders from across the state to torch cut them into sculptures in his spare time. While it is unique, I would recommend visiting only if you are in the area. This is not a destination attraction. But if you are nearby, be sure to also check out the gothic style LDS 10th Ward Chapel.

One of the nicest sculpture parks in all of Salt Lake the other ones that we visited did not have as many Brighham Spynx sculptures as Gigal garden does. Planning on coming back for some sunbathing when it’s summertime.

It's a nice park, tricky to find it in a neighborhood. It is wheelchair accessible, it has a paved path through the park. Some trails of the pavement won't be wheelchair accessible. Be sure to get a brochure at the front to explain some of the exhibits.

Small garden with some neat statues. The flowers though were amazing!! Thank you to the women who was gardening that spoke with me about certain flowers. I’m guessing she was a volunteer. I was very happy when she cut me off some seed pods from some annuals I really liked. Walking through took 15-20 minutes. Would go back the next time I’m in SLC.

I've heard about this place for a while, and just realized that it's a 5 minute walk from my work. I checked it out on lunch yesterday. Since we're in the middle of a 100 degree heat wave I didn't stay as long as I would like, but I really enjoyed it. I wish I was able to read all of the engravings. It's really cool that this unique little park is open and free to the public. The flowers in June were so beautiful.

Easy to get to and a good amount of on street parking in the area. The entrance is a little tucked back though. Almost walked up a neighboring driveway until we saw the smaller signs for the garden. Main sign was being refurbished and not in place when we were there.

Gilgal Gardens is a hidden gem right in Salt Lake City, Utah where there's always something blooming virtually year round. From the beautiful flowering trees, tulips and daffodils in the spring, to roses of all varieties and colors, along with a variety of other beautiful flowering plants all summer and into the fall, there's always something to see. There's even a family of quail who call the garden home. Add to the beauty of the flowers the unique and sometimes strange sculptures scattered throughout the garden and this is a must see place of interest when visiting the city.

Beautiful hidden gem! I was excited to explore with my family and my friends family. Definitely worth picking up the brochure at the beginning of the path and reading some of the back story about this cool park and it's incredible creator.

This is an interesting place to visit. I first heard about it from a coworker. “A sphinx with Joseph Smith’s head? Come on…” I stand corrected. Quite literally just that. Interesting scripture references & totally free, not crowded & just really interesting to consider someone took the time to put this all together. My kind of weird place & worth a visit.

Great little free distraction in the city. If you need to kill a little time while waiting this is a great place to visit. Lots of flowers and interesting sculptures and rocks. We visited while waiting for my father to be discharged from the hospital. It was a bright spot in a not so terrific day.

The Gilgal Sculpture Garden is a unique/eclectic/mildly unsettling collection of stone sculptures, engravings, and plant life, all curated by a single man with what one may refer to as a vision. The garden is relatively small but dense, and visits can take anywhere from 1/2 to several hours, depending on how in-depth you wish to experience the gardens attractions. The sculptures and carvings are all vaguely religious in line with the Mormon faith, but interspersed with the personal reflections of the parks founder, making for a very interesting glimpse into the mentality of Western settlement, perhaps even manifest destiny itself. All in all, the gardens are worth stopping by for the experience, even if just for a quick half hour visit.

This is a Utah hidden gem! If you haven’t go and explored this park then you need to get on it! This place is full of art and sculptures. A ton of history about Utah and Mormons. It is very interesting to get a view of all this art and history that you might not be aware of. If you are just visiting Salt Lake City you should defiantly come check out this park. They have a lot of stuff in here that will help you get a feel for why Utah is the way it is. If you live here and you haven’t check this park out then get on it.

Fun, quick visit. Seems like it's in a residential backyard. It seems like it was someone's pride and joy and they put in a lot of hard work sculpting those rocks. Lots of religious significance to most of it. We were through in like 15 mins. Nice place to have in the neighborhood for who ever lives around there. It's fun to see since it's free

Stange and wonderful. Not easy to access in a wheelchair. Mostly out in the sun. Just wild stuff. It's difficult to describe. Lots of scriptural reference. Not great art, but interesting anyway. Not large, but you can finish seeing everything in 10 minutes, or 2 hours. Not great parking, as it's on the street. Plus, the park is in a residential area. Worth the time, but young kids would probably get bored. Food and drink is nearby. I would like to go back.

So cool!! Weird to be in downtown SLC, but it was so quiet other than birds chirping happily! We even saw a squirrel! The sculptures were incredible! Definitely a must see!

If you want to see the unusual side of SLC, this is the best place to go! The sculpture garden is not very big, you can see everything in less than 15 minutes if you just walk around. There are little things to look at and read if you want to spend more time there. The parking is on the street. If it's a nice day, I'll park at Trolley Square and walk the block and a half to the garden.

Great little place for a quick visit. When putting the address in Lyft, it took us to the back of the garden, so be aware of that. It's not a very big place and it's interesting to see construction surrounding it. Good for a quick stop, maybe about 30min max. Especially on a hot day

I really thought this was going to be a bit more than what there was shown but, what one sees on Google maps is what you get, so not too much to see. No bathroom and it is tucked in between two buildings, kinda looks like a public garden type of spot

Really, really interesting, free place to visit. Won't take you long; it's kind of small. We do wish there were descriptions or history or background or something; we had no idea what anything was depicting or what anything meant. Like the Sphinx--we wouldn't have known it had the face of Joseph Smith had we not read it beforehand. Overall, though, pretty cool spot to visit.

I searched for a surprise experience for my girlfriend and I to visit in the Salt Lake area. This was very eclectic and different to the point that we spent a couple hours just walking and visiting the gardens, sculptures in a very quiet, peaceful place in downtown area of Salt Lake. We were delighted with something different and cool. I suggest taking an hour or so to visit and see the strange and delightful sculptures that are now preserved by the Gilgal Preservation Society for all of us to enjoy. I used to be looked at awkwardly as a kid, when I prayed at lunch time "Dear Jehovah God, thank you for this food, my family, and my friends.." Then I became an atheist because of hardships. I was brought to KRSNA consciousness and became a true believer before realizing all God's names are his. Including Jehovah. Krishna, Vishnu, Jesus, Kalki, Jehovah. I came to this garden not knowing it would be full of beautiful scriptures. I was rushed to leave, but I'll be back. Just like Him.

This is an awesome piece of Utah history! This park was originally the back yard of Thomas Child's home, a masonry contractor. He started building the sculptures in 1947, when he was 57 years old. All of the sculptures are related to the beliefs and teachings of the LDS church, which Child belonged to. The garden becomes more interesting if you take the time to learn the background behind the park itself. The sculptures are very unique and interesting and I wish I could know what Thomas Child was thinking as he made each culpture. Everytime I have been there, the park has been especially windy so I would recommend bringing a jacket.

A very interesting little sculpture garden tucked into the middle of a neighborhood. There are brochures at the entrance to explain what you are looking at and lovely gardens to enjoy. Only takes a few minutes to wander over the whole thing but it's a lovely place to linger. Highlight is of course the Joseph Smith sphinx.

Quirky little sculpture garden created as a passion project of a mormon bishop who used to own the land. Only takes a few minutes to walk around and see the whole thing. It is an interesting piece of Salt Lake history that is worth checking out. The pamphlet provided gives a good summary of the site and has information that makes the visit more informative.

Beautiful gardens... If your LDS. I love the artwork and the flowers and garden here, and as the great grandchild of Maurice E. Brooke's (the sculpter, he assisted on working on the gardens and did the lovely sphinx) I went there to see a piece of my family heritage on display. As not an LDS person I can only enjoy it on it's level of technicality and artistry, I can reccomend this for a quick passthrough but only if your curious, if you enjoy the religious aspect this may the place for you.

This is a Small but very cozy and pleasant place! There is very good energy there. At the entrance you can pick up brochures that tell about the park! There are many interesting and unusual exhibits. There is a mini photo gallery under the roof. Lots of beautiful flowers! There are benches for convenience and even a toilet! This is a great concern for the visitors and the park! The narrow inconspicuous entrance is like a courtyard, but Googlemaps will help you find the entrance!)

I took two friends from SL who had never been to Gil-Gal, a little gem of a park in central city near Trolley Square, and they were blown away. I've known of this place all my life, and was fortunate to meet Mr. Childs when I was a young lad. I'm really happy that the grounds have been maintained and landscaped. If you like art and sculpture you will love this peaceful, spiritual space.

Interesting stone sculptures! Almost all of it is Mormon-themed, so not as interesting for me, but it makes sense. There's some beautiful flowers (Having gone in early/mid-June) that you can walk through. It's a little small, but impressive considering it's just in a backyard in the suburbs.

What a great strange little place in the middle of a quiet neighborhood. Highly recommended if you have time to explore all the carving and saying. While heavily influenced by Mormonism, even those outside the church will find this a bizarre spectacle.

The Gilgal Sculpture Garden is a short 1/2 block walk from Trolley Square, making it worth the visit if you're already in the area. The best way to describe the sculptures is "quirky" but they are interesting, well done, and amusing. The landscaping and flower arrangements were great, and it made for an awesome place to spend a sunset. I took two business partners here after dinner nearby, and both seemed happy enough about the garden that we all felt like it was worth the short visit.

A nice oasis near downtown. Lovingly care for by some great and dedicated volunteers that were happy to explain things to us. We did our visit in less than an hour, which seemed about right. The sculptures are a little eclectic, but interesting. It's a little hard to figure out the correct entrance. Take the one on the left, or you will end up in someone's yard.

Eh - this was just part of a day exploring SLC. I just looked up art museums and this one popped up. After spending my morning at the Botanical Gardens, I figured why not. Well...this is quite different than that. Definitely has a Christian vibe to it. Definitely a Mormon touch to that. Which is to be expected. But I didn't get much out of the garden otherwise. It could use some freshened up landscaping that's for sure. The sculptures were nice to look at - but I'm just not looking for God in art (even though there is a huge connection there).

A nice refuge in the city from the unending heat as others have said. The garden is well maintained without a shadow of a doubt and it is very safe and at times quiet and serene. I wouldn’t say it’s for everyone nor is it a must stop for visitors to SLC but if you’re nearby I still believe you should peak your head in.

Very interesting place, I've brought all my friends here, it's just so unique and interesting. It's a sculpture garden so it's a lot of art and flowers, really beautiful. It's free, all outdoors so it's safe to go to, and there's benches to sit at and one area with benches and a table. I like to have picnics there sometimes.

On a positive note, there's no debatibg that this park was created with hard work and it's upkeep is impeccable. It's an impressive small garden. I was disappointed to see African Egyptian replica insulted with a religious colonialist face chiseled into it and felt like I was being beaten over the head with religious idolatry. That being said it was just OK to walk through, felt that the hype that was given by the multiple recommendations fell flat.

I’ve stopped by here a couple times. This is one of those little gems of a place. If you blink, you’ll drive right by! The sculptures are unique and abstract. There are many carved stones with scripture and bible verse. There are benches and places to sit. Your visit time may vary but you can take most of it in under an hour. Street parking is limited but there are typically only 2-4 others there at a time. I recommend taking it in while on a visit to Trolley Square since it’s very close, park at Trolley and walk over.

I first heard of this place sometime during the 1960's. There were lots of stories about it circulating among Salt Lake's Hippi community. At that time it was not open to the public, as it is today. Some of the stories ranged from wild & crazy to absolute fantastic, and in retrospection, held little if any truth or fact. Strange as life is, years later as a member of The Sons of Utah Pioneers I had the opportunity to help save the garden from demolition. Today it remains not only a Salt Lake City/Utah treasure, but a national treasure as well! The only downside to this place is you can tell the homeless have started camping here which takes away from the beauty. Wish they'd at least clean up after themselves. We were traveling through and decided to take a stop here. It is smaller than I thought, but would be great for a picnic or a quick stop to walk through like we did. The GPS led us on the other side where there was no entrance and we had to drive around the block a couple times to spot the sign and find parking. It's definitely an interesting place to walk through, it's pretty and I got some nice pictures. I would recommend making this quick stop.

Beautiful and peaceful, the garden is cared for by volunteers, but beloved by all who are privileged to find it. It is barely noticeable from the street, looking more like a alleyway or gated house, the rose lined sidewalk is the only thing standing out from the quaint houses and lush yards that occupy the neighborhood. It's worth it to find such an oasis on a hot day in a busy city, because the traffic jams, deadlines and chaos will fade the deeper into the garden you venture. While admittedly, the less fortunate have discovered this gem, they are amazingly respectful and content to enjoy the garden just like you.

I have been here before, but it is now a little fenced in public park. It is stunning with its beautiful flower gardens with the sculptures and stone pathways. It is surprising how many people who have lived in SLC all their lives and have never even heard of this place. A cute little hidden gem right in downtown Salt Lake. It will take less than an hour, even if you take pictures and read all of the inscriptions.

A must see. And see again and again. I was inspired while visiting this Gilgal. My father, Dallas made a different Gilgal back in the 70s. It is located in Kodachrome Basin, Utah.. Anway, I sketched out this Venus of Willendorf Moroni for use by the church as either a new cover for The Book of Mormon, or a gold leafed statue atop the steeple on the next temple. Pretty sure they'll use it soon. 🤔 lol And do visit this Gilgal. There is a lyrical sort of transcendence here, which will make you smile in its freedom.

Being right in the middle of the city, it's an oddity in and of itself, the tranquility and quiet there. Plan to take some time to read through the offered plaques and structures ... Haha I’m dying. Surprised people take this place seriously. I enjoyed it and would recommend. However I would warn them it’s weird and almost creepy. The guy I went with and I thought Joseph Smith as a Sphinx was particularly silly. It is quiet and pretty there as well. You have to go through an open gate between two houses, so it’s hard to see from the road. Very small place, so it will be a quick stop.

I visited the garden last week for the first time. I grew up in SL and had heard about how strange the whole thing is, so I was prepared for its weirdness. It was morning and the dew was still on the grass and flowers and the gardens were beautiful (thanks to those who keep it up). The sculptures are out of the ordinary, but not necessarily in a negative way. There was no way I could have read all the words on all the stones, but I viewed them as a testimony of the sculpture. There were scriptures, words to the hymns and personal thoughts which I found uplifting. What an idelible and lasting way for him to express the beliefs of his heart. All in all, it was a very worthwhile experience!

If you want to check out a legitimately weird but fascinating little art park, Gilgal is a great choice. The sculptures are well crafted, if bizarre, interpretations of somewhat obscure scriptures and prophecies. I really like the dismembered pieces of a stone giant from Nebuchadnezzar's dream, and one of the most memorable pieces is a sphinx with the face of Joseph Smith. A real Salt Lake gem, for tourists and residents alike.

This place is freaky baby; a place I've never been until recently, after spending decades living in the valley. It's not well known and probably for good reason. It is very interesting in a weird way because from the casual observer, it doesn't make a lot of sense, but it is a shrine to Mormon scripture and culture to an extent. There are several statues, but the main ones are a very tall warrior with a normal rock for a head, the sphinx with what looks like Joseph Smith's head/face instead and Gilgal's statue as a centerpiece in the garden with brick pants. There are many types of rocks and carvings of rocks here. Some huge pieces of rose quartz, the biggest I've ever seen. 4 eagle statues along the side wall, intentionally broken statue of the giant from king Nebuchadnezzar's dream which was made of 4 metals, heads and other body parts in seemingly random places and scripture quotes literally everywhere, engraved in stones on the ground and elsewhere. It's very strange and eclectic visually and might have extra meaning for those with a lot of time and who are interested in reading them all. There is also a big covered work area in the back and envelopes in the front if you wish to make a tax-deductible contribution to the garden.

Interesting, quirky place to visit in Salt Lake to experience some eccentric Mormon folk art. It's a garden containing a variety of Mormon-themed sculptures and structures, the most distinctive being a rough-hewn Sphinx with Joseph Smith's head on a lion's body. The park was originally the artist's back yard, so it is small and you can see everything in a few minutes. It's fairly well maintained, but unfortunately you can see the effects of time and vandalism on the pieces.

It's just as quirky and interesting as I would've hoped! I felt like I was in a National Treasure movie for Mormons staring at these bizarre sculptures and trying to interpret the symbolism. Among the sculptures are a Joseph Smith Sphinx, a giant stone warrior, and a very ugly little man. There are also scriptures carved on stones everywhere. And there's a stone listing all of the places in scriptures where altars/memorials were built. It's a fusion experience: seeing 19th century semi-modern motifs collide 4000 year old imagery and stories. The park is also beautiful, and well-maintained. It is full of flowers, blossoming trees, birds, and bumblebees. Not much seating though.

Its in the heart of the south salt lake/salt lake area near trolley Square and if you didnt know it was there you could easily miss it. A very odd, eclectic, and fascinating park that's kinda hard to find. Once you do find it, you won't be disappointed. The sculptures and time dedicated to make them, is astounding.

This place is so cool. I love what they have done to make it a park. 40 years ago, as a kid, I used to sneak through grandma's back gate and curiously inspect he handi-work of this master crafstman. My sibs and cousins and I spent hours here. I love the connection with the past AND the eternities here.

This quaint and unique park is a must see in SLC. The art pieces range from a Joseph Smith sphinx to a headless soldier statue. Free and fun. Also, it's just down the road from a delicious artesian fountain.
