Reviews of Louisville Nature Center
Renee Harlow
Purchased a new rain barrel. Bought two from the Nature Center 13 years ago. One is still fully functional. The second barrel split over a winter, due to my negligence of not opening the spigot to drain. Compared to commercially available options, these are much more durable and inexpensive.

The nature playground is great the kids loved it more than a regular park. We also walked the shorter trail which was perfect for my kids 7 and 2. There was also a family of deer within feet of us which was very cool. Highly recommend this place. Plan on the getting dirty. We went about an hour an a half before dark and pretty much had the place to ourselves the whole time.
Jeremiah Olson
We needed a place to kill some time before we went to the Louisville Slugger Museum. This was a nice place to go for a short hike and eat lunch at. It did seem kind of run-down to me. The trails were fairly well worn although overrun in some places. The longer Trail was closed which was unfortunate. There is a nice little kids area that was well-used. There is a nice little Pond and sitting area if you want to have a picnic lunch there. Unfortunately the little Nature Preserve was closed. There was also a bird watching area that we were unable to get into. We saw one turtle & a few birds but nothing too exciting.
matthew hellmich
What a wonderful urban oasis. The new children's forest playground is a blast, one of a kind. LNC has a few nice trails and a beautiful garden.
Jen Taylor Scheetz
Nice area to stop and hike. It features a few trails, nice gardens, and a center with restrooms, a small meeting space, and gifts. I like the extras around such as the water reserve barrels, the carpenter bee hives, as well as the nicely placed honey bee hives. They have a good bird blind for observation. Very close to the airport, if you have time to kill before a flight a delightful area. Free entrance, and parking. Donations accepted.
Ron Burba
It's ok, bird blind doors are deadbolted shut. Not sure if due to being start of April or what. I hope this was just an early year issues(sure they'll use Covid as an excuse) not too bad on the trail, place seems run-down though.
Emily G.
This a great place to explore with young children. They have a natural play area behind the center. Inside they have a room with a few live animals, books, and other things to explore. You can sit and read with children about the animals and things native to the area. They have some trails to hike as well.
Gavin Caster
Louisville Nature Center is a hidden treasure, tucked away off Trevilian Way across from the Louisville Zoo. It offers a gathering room for event rentals (that can also have guided trail tours!) And a 1.5 mile loop deep into a beautiful wooded hillside. With plenty of wildlife to share the trail with. The bird blind features several large windows where you can watch the birds hopping to the different bird feeders, along with identifying each one with the help of a birdwatching guide book. It's a perfect place to stop by right after work and take in a beautiful walk and connect with nature.
Michael Martorana
Great hidden gem next to the Zoo and Joe Creason Park. A couple short pretty easy trials with a few hills. It was a little muddy but overall in good shape. Nice scenery and hard to get lost. Will definitely be back due to proximity to home.
Margaret Smith (Maggie)
What a beautiful place! Free family fun and adventure. Wonderful garden and pond out front, interactive nature center and 2 short hiking trails. Our children ages 6 and 8 had a blast. Highly recommend.
Bridgett Baharloo
Beautiful flowers!!! There are trails for hiking and restrooms inside if you go during operating hours. Took some great pictures here. 💓 …
Lori Kelly
Really lovely place to wander around and play with the kids. There's a garden and a bathroom in the main building and paths to walk in the woods.
Larry Loew
Nice little place to learn about native plants and get ideas about making your garden at home more wildlife friendly, like attracting butterflies with particular plants!
Keith Miller
Nice and woodsy in central area of town next to Bellarmine U. Good but shorter trails
AK McD
We love the Louisville Nature Center and its trails. Such a wonderful place we have in the heart of Louisville.
John Kaufman
Nice length hike in a beautiful setting. Saw deer, turkey, lizards, frogs, woodpeckers, and mushrooms.
Emily Sturgeon
Great place. Really beautiful trail. It was way too hot for me outside today, but would be great when I'm not pregnant! Lol.
Shara Lucio
My husband and I had our wedding at Louisville Nature Center. Staff has been helpful in the planning process. They answered all our questions and made sure we had someone at the day of the event to help us. It was a beautiful location and we will certainly be back!
mandi massey
Took my son of the trail for a cub scout requirement. It was an easy trail for kids and we even got to see some deer.
Queen Fee
This is a beautiful center. I loved the walking trail as well as the garden. A place of peace and serenity.
Min Jiang
Enjoy your walk, listen to birds singing, watch woodpecker catching bugs or squirrels seeking treasure!
J. Nick Morgan
Was on a corporate event volunteering there and the staff and day school there was AMAZING. Little Local hidden gem right close to Louisville Zoo
Eric George
Great place to take kids (and adults) to learn more about nature and enjoy the trails and activities outside! Our daughter loved having her birthday party here!
Pankaj “Pankaj Kumr”
Nice place to enjoy natural Beauty . Good walk Trail..Can see birds
Leigh LaViolette
So many great outdoors activities here. Some you can do on your own like the nature hikes. Other activities like guided hikes and mushroom hunts are coordinated through the nature center. Awesome camp activities for school kids.

I can’t say enough about the beautiful surroundings! My granddaughter loved her 1st year of schooling during trying time like Covid! Also the team Olivia ,Savanna, Clarissa! Absolutely amazing! Highly recommend! And MOST grateful for the opportunity ! Not worry about Covid for my granddaughter ! She Learned & Loved nature ! She became self-sufficient did not mind getting dirty excellent experience! Many thanks to teachers!
Catherine Schoenbaechler
I love the bird blind near the beginning of the trailhead. There's now a new children's play area in the shade at the front of the forest that is wonderful.
Amanda Smith
The play area and nature trail is beautiful!
crystal gallagher
Beautiful hiking trails lots of wildlife
A. D.
Such a beautiful place with quite a large number of different species of wild animals as well as the wild birds of Kentucky. As you enter the Louisville Nature Center building look at the interesting collection on display. You can venture out back to the trails leading to an indoor bird watching building for a close up look at your favorite birds as well as birds you may have never had the pleasure of seeing before! They have many bird feeders attracting a nice variety of all our extremely special local birds, fenches, hawks,owls......The trails continue on. Enjoying the scenery and peaceful feeling of Nature all around you is refreshing.
Don't be surprised when a deer, fox, Turkey....walks past. JUST have the camera ready!
It's a great experience, I have returned several times and will again!
Phil The Thrill
Beautiful, lots to do, perfect for a low stress hike, perfect for children
Amber Bodily
We had a lot of fun at the open house today. We found the room inside the nature center with books, taxidermy, building blocks, coloring/creating stuff, and even got to see the live snake. We had fun looking at the taxidermy animals and talking about them. Plus, everyone was super friendly. It was pretty cool that they were giving away free trees at the event today, as well! It's really pretty and they have great trails. I would recommend a visit there, for sure!
Timothy Hoover
We didn't even know this place existed, but thinks to the culture pass we got for my son we found it and LOVED IT.
There is an awesome trail for nature exploration right in the heart of Louisville. There are multiple legs of the trail for .5 miles, 1.0 miles and 1.5 miles. It was great and my 6yr old wanted to take the long way.
There is also a natural outdoor playground so that the kids can play in sandboxes, rock boxes, climbing areas, etc
Inside was a "library" with TONS of things for the kids to touch, hold, look at, etc. Animal parts, live bugs and turtles to observe and friendly staff to educate. My son was in awe.
We will definitely return!
Imad Makdah
It's a nice place for a short woodsy hike in the middle of town. I like the mostly narrow trails as they are and they are well maintained. Anyone hiking anywhere in a forested area should always be careful with poisonous plants and wildlife. It's all natural!
Michelle Cartagena
My 3 year old is now in love with this center! Parents this is a great place to take our kids to get dirty and learn! The staff of volunteers are all very passionate and you can see their genuine love for nature which makes the trails and nature experience for both adults and children more enjoyable. PS. I tried the trails at first with a stroller for my 1 year old and had to go put the stroller back in the car. They have a bird viewer area sooo cool for little people, and the turtle area is super cool my kid loved learning that the turtle was sleeping for winter in the ground and he didn't even get to see it. But they actually took him out to explain it all to him. Wonderful place for families!
KayLa
Narrow trail but it wasn't bad terrain. Two options on distance. When the garden is in bloom it will be beautiful. The reserve has a lot of dead wood but there was a lot of new growth as well. Nice to see.
Allison Allen
I've been to the nature center several times and to me it's one of the happiest places in Louisville. It's in the middle of the city, but it's so quiet and peaceful out on the trails. Unlike Cherokee or Iroquois park, the trails are not very busy and I have spotted wildlife such as deer and even a box turtle out there. The trails are also reasonable short (especially the red maple trail) and are ideal for children. Plus, if you want extra beauty, you can take the loop down the Beargrass Creek, although I wouldn't get in the water because Beargrass Creek is prone to sewage overflow problems.
Erica B
Went for a birthday nature hike here. Lots of trails to follow and lots of things to see. We saw deer, rabbits, squirrel and plenty of birds. The trails went in all different directions. There is a nice center at the top of the woods but I didn't get a chance to go inside.
Gary
Love visiting the nature preserve. I really like the bird viewing building behind the main building. It provides a view of birds and other wildlife feeding. Have a seat and enjoy the silence of nature.
Come in early Spring and check out the gardens in front of main building to see what is growing and blooming.
Becky Barnes
Live love! Great trails. The lady that works in the center was planting trees. Super nice!!
Robert Savann
I remember growing up and spending a lot of time around the Louisville Nature Center. Noticed all the new trees they planted the playground that they just now implement it it made good with the items within that little forested area to serve as the items needed to preserve the area.
I also notice how they're clearing it out and trimming the trees in the dead trees back and making the past much more enjoyable to walk through and now they have markers good way to get out and get some exercise and enjoy the area.
max Nelson
Was nice little place. We loved the take a book leave a donation table. We just sat on bench enjoying afternoon. Some cant read and brought their dogs which I do not understand their stupidity.
But a nice visit
Heather Graham
A moment to get away from it all without having to buy out a chunk of time. Our in town forest is one our families regular treats.:-)
Chris Flaherty
We had a great time at the nature center. The staff was very informative and actively engaged the children with us in learning more about nature. The trails were well maintained and easy to follow.
Megan Evans
A wonderful natural center, that gives you a taste of the great outdoors while still being located inside the city. The nature center has two short hiking trails one that's .75 miles and another that's 1.5 miles long, both are perfect for a quick break from your busy life to help you reconnect with nature.
Jeff Layton
Great experience! So thankful for the free trees!
Janet Macon
VERY NICE! Today was the first time I've ever been and I really enjoyed it. They have 2 trails. One is a half mile and the other is 1 and a half miles. The scenery is amazing. Just watch out for poison ivy.
Bryon Spaeth
So I have mixed feelings about this place. The staff was great and very informative, but the trails were not in the best condition. They could use some grooming and be made wider. The other thing I would note is to watch where you go. I saw plenty of poison ivy near the trails.
Jessica Weathers
We had a great time here. Don't just walk through the indoor part. Check out their library there, especially if you have kids. There are tons of book, fossils, a snake, millipede, snails and several different animal pelts. We hung out in there for over an hour. And the young lady working was great and spent time teaching us and answering my daughter's questions. Great afternoon there and will be back soon.
Erin Jones
Sweet little trails close to home if you need a dose of nature but short on time. You will see deer! No dogs allowed on trail though. Completely understandable.
Tom C
Enjoyed having the 1.5 mile Oak Trail to myself on this chilly morning. Also took the short Beargrass Creek Loop as well. Narrow but well marked trail, moderate level of demand. Saw quite a few deer at the wildlife viewing platform along the trail.
Holly Baumer
The trails are not marked very well, and the further back on the trails you get, the more questionable your safety. I believe vagrants inhabit the area. No pets allowed. I would not go there alone. It is very beautiful, though.
Rheanna Cave
very educational place .and staff is beyond friendly . they have a children's learning room with lots of books and nature things .and also a bird blind to watch birds behind one way glass so you dont disturb the birds .also have a speaker system set up where you can hear the birds and nature sounds .. have 2 trails that are well kept up by the local volunteers...over all a very nice place for the family ..and its totaly free .except for specail classes and outdoor projects.
Paul Clark
This hidden jewel is a wonderful place to escape from the hustle. There are well-kept trails, a bird blind, and an education building to keep you entertained. I wish I had discovered this fantastic gem before now.
Jim Kreiner
Delightful nature preserve just miles from downtown. Trails that works be easy for children, even older toddlers and great for an after work breather or a quick weekend hike.
Nathan Rider
Amazing trails, great birding with a LNC guide, surprising amount of space hidden away back in there!
Brenda Erickson
It was a very pleasant and interesting event. So glad we went
Sandapaperdaisy Art
Wonderful outdoor activities for children.
Rheanna Cave
Beautiful trail, lots of misquitos and chigger brush is the only thing i didnt like, i kept having to swipe tgem away even though i doused myself in bug spray, saw lots of deer, turtles and snakes.

Lovely education center with a trail where you can escape from the city for awhile and see turtles sunning on the banks of a,creek.I especially enjoyed the bird blind where you can sit and watch, woodpeckers, finches, chickadees and many more birds, and, very, silly squirrels.a great place to take toddlers and young people.
Rikki Lynne Wells
The trail is very well marked out and easy to walk with four kids. Had so much fun and our kids enjoyed seeing animals.
Karen Willinger
Great time making Christmas wreaths!!!
Nicholas Johnson
Louisville is lucky to have a nature center and urban forest right in the middle of the city! This solar-panel clad education center sits on the edge of a large wooded area with nature trails and exhibits. I hope everyone will visit at least once, and consider becoming a member to support the great work that they do providing a teaching opportunity for families and urban school children.
Emily Spencer
I love this place. Such a space of serenity in the middle of the city. So luck to have a place like this in Louisville!
J. V. Rychman
In winter it's hard to see spring. Never the less this place is a place to get your walk on. You will find dear in the park. Educational programs scheduled. I just dropped in on a wim and and was delighted with the staff's enthusiasm.
Patrick Carrico
A great urban nature area. They have a bird-blind, a nice trail network, and you can rent space for meetings or parties. Wonderful people running the place too.
v tina anders
Nature at its best...trees and flowers very lovely. Enjoyed the bird area where various bird types, squirrels, and chipmunk were eating together in same space!
JJ Haws
Ok. So my eight year old daughter decides that she loves birds. This place is basically heaven for her. We come back, and do her birthday there.
Sharon Nassar
The bird blind is awesome! The hours are 930 to 4. So peaceful, and interesting. The best time to go is during migration.
Kevin Horton
The 1 to 2 mile walking trail is nice & easy with several inclines along the path & short detour to Beargrass Creek

The building is surprisingly modest for such a large city. The guy staffing it was great though. He let my grandson feed the turtle. The natural playground was very well designed. Lots of opportunities for creative, imaginative play. It includes a tree house, a gravel pit with trucks, big sandbox, a chime instrument, logs to jump on... and more. Lots of kids there despite temps in the low 40's. Nice demonstration gardens including sensory and butterfly gardens. Unfortunately, the trails were closed due to the risk of falling tree limbs.
