Reviews of Johnny's Po-Boys
Fred Lozano
I have a place in my heart for divey little spots that let you get a taste of the city you're visiting. Johnny's is exactly that. Nothing pretentious, no frills, and not open late. Pop in, grab a bite, and go enjoy the rest of the city. Perfect for folks looking to avoid the hustle and bustle of the fancier sit-down restaurants. And great for knocking the dust off of your hangover.

Great food and really lovely folks working there.
We shared a shrimp po-boy and two beers. Everything was fresh and super satisfying other than one shrimp that taste a bit off but that is just a roll of the dice.
Fairly priced for how large that sandwich is and for being in the French Quarter.

Downtown New Orleans? Of course you gotta try a Po'Boy! I mean after all, it's one of New Orleans most famous dishes. After a handful of locals recommended me Johnny's I decided to give it a shot. Upon arrival this place was packedddddd, I was hungry, and literally dying from the walk since the weather in New Orleans is not what I'm use to. But anyways, we ordered 2 Po'boys. Alligator Sausage/Fried Shrimp. These sandwiches are something I'm regular with as in Seattle I love to order them, but Seattle isn't the originator is it. The service was great and we received our food pretty fast even though there was so many customers. Seating is almost non existent based on the amount of traffic this place gets, but be patient and you will score a table! Once we sat down and took a bite of the Po'boy I was immediately happy. The flavor was good, the bread was fresh, the food was hot. My wife and I both thought the Alligator had better flavor than the shrimp. This may be biased as we don't have Alligator often in Seattle so it was a rarity.
Don't kill me for saying this but I do think here in Seattle we have better Po'boys. It was just missing something....more sauce maybe? A chilotle mayo possibly? I'm not sure.
Overall, Johnny's was pretty cool for a tourist experience. I would suggest everyone to stop by for some good food and service. - Colter W

My first official meal in NOLA: the oyster PoBoy. Super fresh bread, oysters fried perfectly (though it could use a little more seasoning if I'm honest), and I also polished off half my wife's sandwich too. Place is exactly what you want in any good sandwich shop: it's a hole in the wall that puts all it's energy into the food. My kind of joint. I took off a star because I explicitly asked for dressed without mayo on my better half's BLT (and it even reflected it on the receipt) but the cook didn't pay attention apparently. I'll definitely go back again regardless.

Recommended by a French Quarter guide and a local as the place where po'boys originated. Delicious crawfish po'boy, first boudin balls and they were super tasty (and a good jumping off point if you want to get in good with the staff by cracking a few jokes). Great service, might have to wait for a table but it's worth it.

The alligator sausage was good and the eggs were cooked well. The hush puppies were OK too.The grits had no seasoning to them at all, then we're covered in melted cheese and shrimp. It wod be nice if the accepted electronic payments.

while visiting New Orleans, we were told that this place is home to "authentic" po-boy sandwiches. you know, like if you visit Philly, you just have to try ____ for an authentic Philly sandwich.
I would have to agree with the locals here.
the wife and I shared a crawfish and alligator po-boys, m.i.l. had a chicken po-boy. sides were fries and seafood gumbo.
the alligator was the best in our opinion, and the soup had a 1/2 small crab in it.
it was a fun place and very crowded! if you want to sit and eat, send a partner to grab an open table if one becomes available, while the other stays in line to order.

Four stars because it is an experience for your trip. If it was a spot in my hometown, then 3 stars. it's a small, packed place but they got it running smooth (we were there New Year's and the Sugar Bowl brought a lot of crowds to town. We had the fried oyster po boy and a Jimmy's special po boy, ordered boudin balls but got hushpuppies (did NOT want to go back to the counter to deal with it) and the $10 Debris Fries. Tip, have someone in your party grab a table as soon as one opens up - also, be aware there are tables in back which most folks happened to miss. Oh and FYI - cash only.

Recommended by a few locals, we decided to grab lunch at this well known little hideaway...and we are really glad we did!!! This place was packed (likely more so due to the NCAA Final Four).
We were lucky and only had a 30 minute wait and got ours to go. I had one of the shoft-shelled crab with the disaster fries. I don't think I'll need another meal today!

Delicious homestyle cooking. The food here is excellent, and they were very busy when we stopped in for lunch. We all got different po boys and enjoyed them all. You can't go wrong with either the gumbo or the red beans and rice. We love supporting small businesses when we are out, and this one was so worth it.

Choose this place! Lines everywhere else except here. No one knows about this tucked away local spot.
The Chicken biscuits and gravy were so good! Comes with 2 large biscuits and chicken tenders with delicious gravy.
Cash Only and an ATM inside if you don’t have cash on you.
Hash browns were good, nothing outstanding but still tasted good.
This spot is worth checking out.
Pro Tip: additional seating in the back around the left side.
Lindsay Marie
We loved this classic. I got the roast beef po boy dressed w/ rice and beans. My husband got the catfish po boy dressed and gumbo. We both loved our po boys. The rice and beans brought a sense of comfort. My husband loved the gumbo. The service was quick, and the line never built up.
Clinton McDonald
New Orleans famous Johnny’s Po-Boys lives up to its reputation. The food is delicious and the portions are huge. The wait between ordering the food and taking your first bite is very short. Just remember it only takes Cash. No credit card. They have an atm
machine inside if you dont have cash.

Just arriving to New Orleans and we were told to come here. Small place but fast service. I got the seafood gumbo and my husband the roast beef po boy sandwich . We also tried the boudin balls. The food was fresh but my seafood gumbo wasn’t flavorful, didn’t have a lot of seafood just one crab and once that was out there wasn’t anything else in there. my husband liked his food. I did enjoyed the boudin balls were fluffy and had bits of sausage.
Jim Vosler
I had the shrimp po-boy and it was great. Stuff with shrimp and the bread was perfect. Only negative was cash only. The staff was friendly and helpful. Come try it.

My wife, son, and I were looking for a great spot for breakfast and some local delivery guy came to the rescue! He said, “follow me” and we followed; OMG is all I can say!! Johnny’s did NOT disappoint!! The bayou breakfast was killer; gator sausage, shrimp & grits, scrambled eggs, w/hush puppies!! Wow!!!
Rowena McBride
Absolutely LOVE this place! It’s my go to breakfast spot every time I’m in NOLA! The food is absolutely amazing! I haven’t tried anything that hasn’t been exceptional! It is cash only but it’s very reasonably priced and has never been a bother for me!
Peter Pinti
Last day morning in NOLA, and trying to cure my hangover, I wanted to end it with a great breakfast, and had a desire for a shrimp po-boy, so where does one go at 8:30am, Johnny's. The best Po-boy in NOLA hands down loaded with crispy shrimp, mayo, lettuce and tomatoes. Make sure you put hot sauce on it!! Staff is kind and great. Menu is extensive. Johnny's is a no frills red checker table cloth place, CASH ONLY, with a few seats up front. Thank you for ending my Mardi Gras weekend. Will be back next year again.
Josie DeGrusha
Friendly, ambiance, great New Orleans foods. Affordable
An eating experience.
Breakfast Awesome Lunch even better
Frank Maglin
Not the cleanest place but nothing out of the ordinary for its location and history. Their catfish is out of this world! I destroyed that catfish poboy in seconds. Good place for lunch!
Anthony M
This place definitely lives up to the hype. The chicken club was delicious and stagg was very curious. Just make sure to check the hours before you head over
Peter Bakker
Breakfast was pretty good. $15 for coffee, eggs/hash browns/bacon and a biscuit. Good return
Chris Lindsey
My last meal in New Orleans before leaving town. Again another first time dining and I decided another Po Boy was in order. Not dlfar from my hotel and also a recommendation from the welcome center was Johnny's. They did not disappoint. I believe this was a Fried Green Tomato, Fried Shrimp Po Boy dressed and had remoulade sauce on it. It was off the charts. The place is small and quaint. Staff was awesome. And again the Po Boy was off the charts. I highly recommend.
Joe Cicalese
Wow! Going to NOLA over the past 20 years I always missed their hours. Made it this time! Crab cake po'boy and jambalaya were fantatic!
dean dfw
Cash only!
Put that up there for the slimmers LOL
We always stop here when in town for a po-boy: the Surf-and-Turf, the Judge Bossetto and the Debris Fries this time!
Larry Edelblum
Had a great shrimp poboy and hot crispy fries. Arrived at 11:50, just in time to get my order before the place got packed (line out the door).
Great food in a small neighborhood restaurant. Can't wait to try something else.
Note: CASH ONLY!
Jennifer Mende
Got catfish and alligator sausage poboys and hush puppies. Huge portions and delicious- next time I’d get half sandwich. The breading on the fish was crisp. Hush puppies were a bit greasier than I like but the flavor was great. Bloody Mary’s were a little bland but I just added some crystal- good garnish.
Don Ballan
Great place to drop-in for a quick, perfect bite of authentic NOLA nibbles! Popular with the locals and tourists alike because of the consistently good food and fast service. I could go for one of their delicious shrimp po-boys right about now!
Kelly Poole
Sure, there was something on the menu for everyone, but three of us got the veggie poboy and it was not something I would ever revisit. The olive spread was way too much and left us all feeling icky into the next day. The meat eaters in the group didn't have the best things to say either. Definitely not a restaurant I would recommend to loved ones. No offense Johnny's. Go Saints.
AJ D
The food is excellent. For those who are trying Poboys for the first time expect that it's a lot of red and as you bite things will fall off.
The line is extremely long however personally I think it's worth it. However the dining area is extremely dirty and they do not clean it up you have to clean for yourself
petersonA95
I got the Johnny’s special, it was decent. They give you a TON of food for the price though. The table I sat at was sticky, it doesn’t look like they get cleaned often due to the amount of foot traffic this place gets.
Mark Van Pelt
Roast beef po'boy and boudin balls are to die for!
Amanda Williams McNair
My friends and I did manage to get a table but this place gets BUSY. The shrimp poboy is delightful and they have lots of hot sauce for you to use (which I recommend). The portions are big so go hungry. Also would really really recommend the fried green tomatoes!
Michael Knackerson
The steak Po-boys was awesome and everyone should have it.
One star less because the muffalita, on the other hand was AWFUL and I will never have another one, if theirs is typical of this horrible sandwich. It was wet and messy, dripping of olive oil dressing. It had an awful aftertaste that I and my girlfriend kept burping up days after eating.
Gina Rosbury
Loved the roast beef po boy and the red beans and rice! The wait is the only down side, but I would wait again.
The shrimp po'boy was a little dry but still good.
The BLT po'boy was good as well.
A.C. Antonelli
One of New Orleans' original no-frills po-boy shops. You can never go wrong with the shrimp, but they've got something for everyone.
Natalia Sirju
The best Po-boys in New Orleans hands down! The roast beef is delicious & flavorful. And you can never go wrong with shrimp. A must try whenever you're in NOLA. The owner Lori Beth is very sweet and down to earth. She makes you feel right at home. Can't wait to go back!
Zach Bailey
Great food at great prices!
The place is a dive and is simple. But simple isn't bad in this case. The items they do serve are amazing. We had the chicken tender plate for $10.99 and it was plenty of food for two people. We got 6 tenders and a heaping pile of fries plus two slices of breads, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles. All of it was delicious, hot and fresh.
The staff were pleasant and there were plenty. The food took a bit to be cooked up but it was because they literally didn't start out meal until we ordered.
It's off magazine street so it's not very big and it's not ever packed but I think that helped the atmosphere because it was quiet and peaceful even while there were several others eating.
If you're looking for a good family place to eat I would recommend this place!
Mariusz
This was my first shrimp PoBoy. Very interesting and tasty. The name originated from Poor Boy - food for delivery boys years ago. Typical for the New Orleans kitchen.
Bob Boggs
Off the beaten path GEM! Best gumbo I have ever eaten. Got the cajun combo. Won't be let down.
Micah Beverley
We had the shrimp po-boy. Very good! We also ordered the seafood gumbo. There was a whole crab in it! People who work there are very nice. The place is small and crowded so we got ours to go and went to eat in the park by the river.
Shannon Williams
Not sure it’s worth the hype. Cash only place. Weird hours Thursday to Sunday 8-330.
A Clarified Woman
We cannot tell the story well enough to convey what a good experience we had here. Took a cooking class at the New Orleans School of Cooking which is right across the street. Figured we would try it our 3rd day in the area. The experience and flavor did not disappoint at all.
There was a homeless man with his cart full of belongings and some obvious mental illness standing out front only arrived. We invited him inside to buy a sandwich, then we found out that he had already ordered and paid for a sandwich himself.
Listen to what I am saying. This homeless man, with very little resources available to him, chooses to spend his precious money on food here. And he likes it so much, that he will ask for more. That indicated to me the food was going to be good.
Then I was embarrassed to not notice the giant cash only sign and tried to pay with credit card. They couldn't take it, and all I had was the $20 bill. The food was already being made, and I mentioned finding an ATM to pay the difference. The staff took the $20 for our $53 bill and said they didn't want to get in the way of the good karma wheel. While I waited for the food, I wandered around and found a little ATM machine in the corner. All they had to do with tell me was there, but they wanted to promote good karma.
The sandwiches were wonderful. We had both a catfish and a shrimp po'boy with a side of sweet potato waffle fries, and some boudin balls. Everything had a really great light breading, good flavoring, a great dipping sauce for the balls, and the bread was simply perfect. Makes a mess due to the crust crumble, but we think it's completely worth it.
I am sure will eat somewhere else as well, but each time we come back, this will be a stop.
Greg Knapp
Going into a sandwich shop and ordering something other than a sandwich can be risky. Without Gluten Free bread, that was our option. So on this mid-afternoon stop, the Creole Red Beans and Rice with Smoked Sausage was excellent, great mix of flavors, it filled the plate. The Jambalaya was a disaster, almost inedible. The rice was crunchy and the meat shriveled from sitting in the steam able way too long. The saving grace was that when we asked the cashier for a box for the left over red beans and rice, she took the plate and topped it off then added some flatware for later. Excellent service. Note: CASH ONLY!
Cassandra Ryder
The catfish po-boy was absolutely delicious! Went back multiple times during my trip - it was the perfect place for lunch!
Yuribel Alejo
The chicken club sandwich was delicious and the sandwiches are huge that’s if you don’t eat a lot you can definitely share with someone else. I also, recommend to try the sweet potato fries. The staff was super friendly and fast with our sandwiches. Prices range around 12 dollars.
Tammy Gamble
This place was recommended by a local for a po-boy. Small and very busy, but they went as fast as they could to get the lunches out. Huge portions, cash only, minimal seating, but a great sandwich. I had the vegetable and my BF had the soft shelled crab with the seafood gumbo.
B L
Amazing po boy sandwich. Wash going staff. Sweet tea was a bit too sweet but still refreshing. Soft shell crab and cat fish po boy sandwich were amazing and super fresh!
B G
Family owned and operated for years by brothers, fantastic atmosphere and quick but friendly customer service. Even better food, The cheese fries the oyster, shrimp and turkey po-boys are great. Highly recommended and will be back when visiting.
Jay Garcia
After trying so many other PoBoys in town Johnny's is the place to go hands down!!!! The size, the service, the FLAVOR oh my goodness! Pricing is fair and well worth it as I will return for them PoBoys. Next I will try them grits Johnny's don't let me down.
Jess Brooks
Was told by my uber driver this was *the* place to get a Po Boy and to get there early before the line forms (by 11a on a Sunday the line was well out the door, but it moves quickly). Was super small and I lucked out and snagged a table. Po Boy was huge and could easily have been split with someone. I got the oyster and each oyster was perfectly fried and juicy. I am not a particularly big fan of fried food in general but couldn't visit NOLA without trying a Po Boy. This was an experience similar to having to stop at Pat's or Geno's in PHL for a cheesesteak. It lived up to its reputation.
Victoria Gautier
Walked off the seawall and found this little gem hole in the wall. Service was excellent. Everything was perfectly spiced. The shrimp and grits and alligator sausage sure hit the spot. Great bloody Marys too!
Alison Hernandez
Really great food! Loved the Johnny's Special. A must stop when in NOLA!
Byronean Bozz
This is one of our Favorite places to eat and Highly recommend.....we have at least one of our meals every time we come to town.... sorry but, they're CLOSED on MON/TUES/WEDS
Fernando Duran II
Food was great. Why only 3 stars? Firstly, the molding underneath the pictures was extremely dusty and dirty. Looks like it hasn't been cleaned for at least a couple of weeks. Food and dirt and dust. And it's all immediately above (about 6 inches) from the napkin dispenser. Yes there is dust all over it. Secondly, they need more vegetarian options to compete with Killer Po Boy. Had a crawfish PO boy and sweet potato fries. Both were great. Would recommend.
Daniel kapfhammer
This place is awesome, great bread and breaded shrimp. Came highly recommended from multiple people. Menu was served all day.
Jackpot Jane
I'm not a big seafood eater but the shrimp poboy was good. My cousin and friend got a fried fish plate and said it was good as well. Hole in the wall spot in the French Quarters. Seating area is small however that's what makes you get to know people because you end up sitting at a table with people you don't know. They give you a lot of shrimp on the poboy but its small shrimp so it ends up falling out of the sandwich
matthew smith
Get there early because they close at 3. Parking around this area is difficult to come by and paid parking is very expensive. Still this is a good option for Po boys and muffaleta sandwiches but there are many good options everywhere so I wouldn't go out of my way to come here again.
TJS
These poboys are amazing. I got the surf and turf, and I was not disappointed. The portions are also very filling. I also caught a glimpse of the omelets, which looked very tempting. I will definitely try them during my next visit.
J W
Soggy buns. Great shrimp. Beef is not fresh though. Get the shrimp Poboy not the surf&turf.
Rebecca Lu
I love New Orleans po boys with that special po boy bread, but Johnny's of the past was way better than johnny's of the now. We ordered the fried shrimp po boy and the fried cat fish po boy. The shrimp po boy did not have enough shrimp. What a bummer. It tasted like a tartar sandwich. Just not enough stuff. The catfish po boy lacked flavor and did not taste fresh. Furthermore, it was soggy and was not crisp.
The price point was a bit expensive at 10$ a po boy. The restaurant is pretty crowded though but there is seating in the foyer, back and on the second floor. I think you can do better for po boy in Nola.
Derick Hildebrandt
Johnny's Po-Boys was suggested to us by a local for "the best place in town to order alligator". Maybe we came on an off day, but I was fairly disappointed in my alligator po-boy, so much so that I only ate half of it. The meat was fairly chewy (maybe this is standard for the animal?), and the fixing seemed to be half-hearted. Overall, an okay place for a po-boy, but far from the best food we had in NOLO
Charlie Casselberry
The roast beef, fully dressed, with gravy is one of my favorite sandwiches ever. The shrimp poboy, fully dressed, with some added hot sauce is my alternate.
Johnny's Po-Boys is a no frills, poboy shop where you get a real New Orleans food staple. There is a reason they are always so busy.
Izzy Zanin
The place to go for po boy sandwiches. The roast beef is excellent. They're huge, enough for two people. See their special, half sandwich and side.
Steven Thomas
The Po-Boys here are so good! I have never lived in New Orleans, but every time I'm in the area I always go to Johnny's. My favorite is the roast beef. It is really good. They cook their own roast beef and gravy and it is exactly the same as it was the first time that I went there. I get 'em dressed.
Carrie Mc
Me and family were looking for the best Poboy around, so based on the ratings and reviews we decided to give Jonny's a try. It was crowded with a line (cash only), but I expected that. When ordering the lady made us feel rushed, so we just got the shrimp poboys. Sad to say, I was disappointed...The food was a bit overpriced, shrimp lacking seasoning and were on the smaller size (although freshly cooked). Worst of all, the bread was chewy/tough. Not sure if we'll be back....😕
Chad Edie
We had the club po boy, the shrimp po boy and a muffaletta and shared them all around. They were all very very good. There was a bit of a line already but well worth the wait. Several of the other plates we saw going out looked delicious, too. We could probably spend a week here and eat around the menu and still love everything. We saw they have free delivery, and it looks like amazing breakfast. We gotta come back for the rib eye and eggs. Everything looks great. The guy at the register had a big smile and a great attitude. We really enjoyed stopping here. We highly recommend it if you are in the area.
Stephanie Moya
We couldn't come to NOLA and not have a po'boy! The shrimp po-boy was so freshly made! It took a while but it was worth it. These are deliciously seasoned, and all the food tasted fresh. It took a while for the order to come (about 30 min) but it was packed, and it was a Sunday, so we understood! Its a small place so consider take out!
Crystal Mayo
I had the shrimp po boy and it was delicious! I got the lunch special which was a half po boy and a cup of gumbo. I also ordered fries. The gumbo was delicious as well. I would've gotten a full po boy but the restaurant takes cash only and I only had enough cash for the special. I will definitely visit Johnny's again!
Trent Todd
Poboy and Gumbo special was outstanding. The gumbo was seasoned perfectly and the bread for the sandwich was the highlight of the meal. We also ordered the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer, but the we're far too doughey for us. Maybe could have stretched to a 5 star review if the tomatoes had been sliced thicker and there was ANY ambience - lol.
Parvez Charaniya
Fresh Authentic New Orleans Shrimp Po-Boy. This is by far miles my favorite Shrimp
Po-Boy. Very Authentic and very helpful staff. Conveniently located and variety of Louisiana favorites.
Looking forward to visit again.
Marielle L
First time tried out the shrimp po- boy.
First impression of the restaurant, it was very busy and full. So we didn't mind to wait for some good po-boy. But the Po-boy was a little disappointing, and expensive for what you get. The sandwich is big you can easily share one. But it is not a really complicated sandwich. I expected more of it.
Jonny
Tasty po-boys. Very rustic, feels like a locals kinda place. Looks as though it hasn't changed for years, which is a good thing!
Anna Rawhiti-Connell
So good. Absolute institution for a reason. The Po’ Boys are so good. Very fresh and tasty. The biscuits are delicious and it’s a great place to stop for lunch or a recovery breakfast.
Grant Chun
First, bring cash. It's cash only. Secondly, there aren't a whole lot of seats available so keep that in mind. And third, I ordered shrimp po'boy and it tasted good no doubt (But not something I'm super wowed by). If you're in New Orleans for the first time though, I still recommend you to try it.
Pam Kirby
Hole in the wall we stumbled into. Super happy we got lost down a side street to find this place. Huge menu, lots of options and beer if you want one! I got the blackened chicken. Good. My gf got the shrimp. So so so good! No AC but beer was cold. Cash only and slow from order to the table but we had time to spare. It was worth the wait! If you can find it, do so and go hungry because there's lots of food!
Netanya Roden
The Muffaletta was very good.
W J
Johnny's is a well known local place. The FQ is full of tourist chow, but you'll get real food here. Poboys are large and well stuffed. Portions are large here. I can usually only eat half s Dressed btw means lettuce, tomato, mayo and pickles, but you can ask for what you want. The roast beef poboys here are made with real roast beef, not microwaved lunch meat. The fried shrimp and oysters are fresh. Heads up - they're cash only and prices are about twice what they are on the menus you'll see posted online.
Leah Hooper
I had the roast beef po boy and it was absolutely delicious but probably the messiest thing I’ve ever eaten. Recommend getting it take away. My partner had the alligator po boy and said it’s one of the best things he’s ever eaten. Highly recommend trying this while in New Orleans !
Annia Hsu
Fried soft shell crab po-boy is amazing, gumbo was all right. Place was packed, but it was still pretty easy to find a seat for 2.
Debi Williams
The half shrimp and oyster po boy was 100 perfection! I had mine "dressed" which means the soft crusty baguette bread comes with fresh shredded lettuce and juicy slices of tomato. So good, we dug right in and almost forgot to take a pictures!
Annemieke Smit-Roeland
I didn't order what most people order here, because I ordered a grilled chicken salad. They may be well-known for their po boy sandwiches but it doesn't make them less good in other items. The salad was really good!! Nice colorful combination of all kinds of fresh ingredients and portion size was great! Would def. go here again for a salad on-the-go
Aqsa Sayed
The PO-boys are BOM!!
Place is a little small when you compare it to the crowd there.
I was skeptical at first , as the restaurant is not that clean, floors are sticky, lot of madness behind the counter.
They accepted cash only.
But after all that , waiting for 1.5 hrs - the food was worth it.
Tarek Alnatur
Great Po-Boys but place can use a little more TLC. Amazing Seafood Gumbo Soup also!!
Julie
The soft shelled crab was delicious. The Bread on the po' boy, not so much. If you want the "fixings" which is extra money for lettuce, mayo, and tomato. It was ok. I would possibly go there again.
raymond orona
Best po boy I've had while in town theres so many choices of po boys here. And lots of room for your group or come on in alone works for both. Friendly staff it is cash only so be mindful of that. Also more space in the back
J Lo
Place was recommendes by a local. Shrimp po boy was awesome! Sides of gumbo and fries were ok. Love the hot sauce. Fun people behind the counter, all working hard. I'd go back!
Anet Petrosyan
This muffaletta was the best freaking sandwich I've ever had and easily my most favorite meal during my trip to NOLA. DO NOT MISS OUT. And get it toasted. It's amazing.
B. Jackson-Edie
Super busy time to decide to go in at the last minute because we saw great reviews for this particular establishment...there were orange and red jerseys everywhere since people were gearing up for the Sugar Bowl! Regardless, we placed our order for shrimp po'boy, club po'boy, and (grilled/warmed) muffaletta. Cheese is an extra$.75, condiments like mayo/mustard are an extra$.60. Long line but order placed relatively quickly. Gentleman taking orders appeared eager, nice, liked what he does interacting with his customers. Wait took probably 30-40 minutes from order to our number called. Took it back to our condo and it was delicious. Alot of meat and very tasty, VERY big, we could only eat half and great for next day leftovers. Also got fresh beans and rice cup and it tasted very good. Have to try a po'boy at least once in my life, glad I tried Johnny's.
Lanie Griswold
A must in New Orleans! Best poboy ever. Cash only. The soft shell crab is divine. The oyster is amazing. They also serve breakfast. Don't miss this food gem. This is where all the locals go. They have bike delivery in The Quarter. They sell beer and soft drinks.
Dieter Ferreira
I always review restaurants in the context of it's offering, geo, and context. This one's for a sit n go or grab n go.
Freshly made. Best grits in 10 block radius. Stay with me. Great bacon. Styrofoam plates and plastic cutlery. Perfectly toasted muffins both sides of your breakfast. Sunny side up the way nature intended. 5 stars to this hole in the wall. Skip the restroom.
Sangwon Park
Aligator poboy was really good.

Authentic, historic diner, nothing fancy, just good southern comfort food, diner was very busy, obviously very popular, I chose the daily special, fried chicken, mac cheese & salad, my wife chose fried shrimp po boy & seafood gumbo, good portions for a visiting British couple, would definitely recommend...
Andrew Stacey
No frills, down home New Orleans eatery. They have a fairly big menu but the Po Boys are where it's at. Had the shrimp po boy, dressed up with lettuce, tomato, peppers and mayo. The french roll is fresh from that day and is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. A single sandwich is definitely a full meal and you'll likely want to take some home. Be aware it's cash only.
Malenia Jackson
Very busy, but the service was good and still fast. Very generous portion sizes. My picture is not very good, but I promise you that 1/2 sandwich was LOADED with well seasoned shrimp! There no way I could've eaten a while one by myself. Not really a fan of gumbo, but actually the seafood gumbo was really good too! I may have to get a sandwich 'for the road' back home to Detroit. Worth every penny!
Brittany R
Hidden gem! Great food, large menu with lots of options. Fair prices and portions are enormous, big enough to share. Staff is friendly and happy to be of service. Atmosphere was comfortable and the wait was short and sweet. Don’t let the simple, low-maintenance dining room fool you, this place is a must visit! We will definitely be back! CASH ONLY, ATM on-site.
Shane Bisbing
I got the shrimp po-boy fully dressed and wife got the muffaletta and we shared. Washed it down with a Dixie beer. Both were amazingly delicious. Cash only so be prepared for that. Will go again!
Sean B
Small hole in the wall deli style shop off of the main path in the French Quarter. Shrimp po-boy and muffelatta sandwiches will feed two.(we fed 4 for about $50) Both are excellent!!! Place is always busy and crowded; with very limited seating it is just a one block away from a riverfront park where you can spread out and enjoy your lunch.
This is a MUST GO TO place if you love food!
Rob Haines
Real deal NOLA Po' Boy. Delicious sandwich in a real New Orleans classic. Will definitely make this a regular stop. This is the kind of place you must visit when in New Orleans if you want to get the real feel. This joint has been around a long time and for very good reason. Will be back very soon.
Dave McMurray
Absolutely loved Johnny's Po-Boys. I ordered the Johnny's special and my wife ordered the shrimp. The staff was incredibly friendly. The Johnny's special was the messiest most delicious sandwich I've had. Highly recommend!
Joyce Blackwell
Delicious and Yummy! We tried the Club , the Surf and Turf, and the Crab Cake Po Boy. I recommend the seafood po boys. Must visit in the French Quarter.
Helen Zhang
We visited here two times when we were on our vacation in New Orleans. The sandwiches are good and big but not super good. And the price of it is cheap in this area and always hard to find a table here. They only accept cash.
S Davis
Roast beef poboy was amazing and messy like it should be! However, one star less for my wife's shrimp poboy which contained shrimp that were not deveined and was overall impressive. Another star less due to the facility cleanliness. The bathroom was filthy, stunk and the vent looked like it hadn't been clean in years. In need of health inspector visit and thorough cleaning.
roody morales
Catfish po-boy was just okay, dry. Fried green tomatoes are different, tasty.
Wing Lee
The sandwiches are huge. We ordered Judge bosetta and fried oyster sandwich. The meat patty on Judge Bosetta was very flavorful. The fried oysters was crispy and fresh. There are tables available for sitting in the front and back.
Blake W
Great food. A hole in the wall, which makes it special. Get there early for lunch or the line is long.
Shawna Boden
This is my 3rd time visiting New Orleans, and our first meal (and my 3rd time trying it) after arriving was from Johnny's Po Boys. We waited an exceptionally long time to receive our single order which was a Shrimp Po Boy - we were likely at the restaurant for at least 45 minutes due to lines and high demand.
The staff were amazing and very apologetic - one of the staff prepping the food (sadly I did not catch her name) was very impressive in terms of recalling what people ordered - even though she didn't personally take the orders herself.
When we finally had our Po Boy in hand - it was worth the wait! Absolutely delicious. Don't forget to request their sauce with whatever Po-Boy you order.
Meg
My fried oyster po boy did not disappoint. This place is authentic New Orleans. Go!
Aymara S-G
Just one word to describe the food and service, AMAZING!!!! If you visit NOLA this is a must restaurant tovisit. I had the chicken tender poboy and it was delicious.
Jennifer Filmon
Wow! We came in starving and were not disappointed! We ordered Po Boys for all of us plus a couple orders of fries to share, but as soon as we paid we turned around to see how HUGE the PO Boys on other people's tables were. Bring your appetite. Catfish Po Boy, Roast Beef Po Boy, and Turkey Po Boy were all fantastic. If you order the roast beef, plan on using about 100 napkins because it is messy but oh so good.
Marcos Batan
I had the alligator sausage and it was exceptionally flavorful. The employees were very friendly. I certainly recommend it. Don't expect a fancy restaurant. It is packed and only accept cash but it is worth it.
Doaner05
Good Po-Boy! The ingredients were all fresh and tasty, Gumbo was good. Cash Only joint with an ATM inside.
Matt Riddle
So I recommend going to #JohnysPoBoys after 2 or 3pm. Still had a 10min line wait but not out the door and a 15ish minute food wait. No seating(which they have additional behind the deli & upstairs, still full). I managed 2grab a tight corner seat by helping a couple throw their things away for them lol, but people are still elbow to elbow & barely able to walk between the tables. Wasn't impressed with the crab claw garnished #SeafoodGumbo had some spice but not savory. Kept it for a 2nd try. The #ShrimpPoBoy was Ok. Shrimp was a lil firm. They have TONS of types of PoBoys that u may love. Fairy friendly service. Don't bring a crowd.
Mad Papa
Great hole in the wall place and the oyster po-boy and gumbo were awesome!
Ty Perry
I had the muffaletta sandwich toasted. It was enough to feed 3 people, with that being said it was the best sandwich I ever had! The other people with me ordered shrimp po boys and loved them.
Kind of a hole in the wall restaurant but service was good and restaurant appeared clean.
Keith Newstrom
Absolutely incredible. We got half softshell crab, half shrimp po' boys. Remoulade sauce on the side really kicked it up a notch.
Marc-André Dion
Busy but worth the hassle. Tasty, freshly made classics that will thrill the senses. Staff is very efficient and friendly. More than generous portions.
Greg Allred
We went for a quick breakfast, we had relatively low expectations. We were very pleasantly surprised. Excellent food and really cool local atmosphere. We loved it.
Rose and Mike Farmer
Have to have a hot sausage poboy when in town. This is a good place to get it. Also opens early for breakfast, eggs and grits, etc.
Odelle George
Best Po-boy I’ve ever had in my life. Gotta get the surf and turf.
@OdeBroham
The Girl Who Flies
For a quintessential NOLA experience I absolutely recommend a lunch stop at Johnny's. There's something about the atmosphere here that just makes for a perfect spot to stop & appreciate the food culture in this amazing city.
I've been here twice, 15 years ago & most recently on a work trip to New Orleans from Sydney. Not much has changed during those years; the decor, the menu. What's not to love about that!
I'm a huge fan of the Blackened Fish Po' Boy (fully dressed of course), but have also tried the Blackened Chicken & a handful of other sandwiches.
I absolutely love this place & I'm sure you will too.
VJ
We tried shrimp and oyster po-boys and honestly I had better po-boys. Seafood gumbo came with my po-boys was very good!
Andrea Ratliff
I had the fried oyster po-boy twice in my visit to NOLA. Super good, prices are reasonable for the city, cash only, friendly service. Just a little dive-y but that's part of the charm. Damn good food.
Peter Eidegren
It is a sandwich with stuff in between two loafs of white bread. The Johnny's special was really good.
It looks like a genuine restaurant that the locals go to.
Pascal Theroux
Went there a Wednesday at 1h30pm and there was a constant lineup from the counter to the door. Took the shrimp po-boy with fried tomato slices. It was good.
Jan Tran
It was good but not great. I think it is a tourist spot in the French Quarter. I got the soft shell crab po boy.
Jessica McCarthy
Even though I don’t care for shrimp I decided to try a fried shrimp poboy and loved it here.
Eduardo Ramirez
Cheap but full flavored eats in the middle of the French Quarter. Seating available. Poboys and other NOLA cuisine staples. Only complaint is the is a cash only place, no cards accepted.
Sherry Green
Tried the soft shell crab po' boy. Sandwich was good just didn't care for the crab. Price was decent for what I got
Day Van
Positive: The staff was great, the portions were large and they had Bargs Creme Soda which is kinda rare.
Negatives: It was about $16.00 for one sandwich which seemed a bit high. Maybe I order the wrong thing but the chicken po boy had very little seasoning and was really bland. The bread was kind of hard. Others seem to really like this place and I didnt have the same feeling.
Kfr Newpage
Small place gumbo, beans and rice, muffallatas and a bunch of poboys. Cash only. Limited beer selection. Ordered 3 poboys dressed roast beef good. Ordered dressed oyster and a dressed shrimp both mayo on side. Shrimp good. Forget to dress the oyster. Took back to counter asked to dress it no mayo. They dressed it plus mayo. And oysters were smallish and over cooked. My experience.
Shane Zahn
This is a must go if you are in the French Quarter. Small, and cash only, but so good. Bring a big appetite.
Phillip Riley
Excellent food, we'll worth travelling from the UK for! Soft shell crab special was incredible
Jasmin Osbourne
Sooooo good!!! I'll definitely be going back. Even though it was super busy the employees still had a smile on their face and provided an amazing meal!
Craig Webb
Very busy but good food. Pricey, but that is expected for this part of NOLA.
Jenny
Sandwiches look huge when they arrive and I think I wouldn’t be able to finish it. But somehow it all disappears into my belly. A shop with friendly service.
Anandi Premlall
The lunch time wait was over 30 minutes and definitely not worth it. The hot sauce wasn't even on the side as they promised and some of the lettuce was brown and wilted - ewww! Overall, my catfish Po-Boy was ok and nothing to call home about. There are way better options in the quarter and around NOLA. Perhaps I went at the wrong time. In any case, I know where to avoid during my lunch break!
Jasmine Hart
It was a decent poboy. Shrimp was fried well, but the bread was a little tough.
Robert Jenkins
So many different po-boys to choose from. My wife had the oyster and I had the meatball. So good. Cash only, but ATM inside. Would definitely recommend.
Matthew Salvoni
The muffelletta was wonderful toasted. Everything that was ordered around us smelled and looked great. Small seating area but the bathrooms are clean.
Dee Stafford
Oh Yum! Went here over Final Four weekend...busy but smooth service, and the wait was worth it! Delicious PoBoys, Fried Green Maters and Sweet Tater Fries! Didnt think I could eat the huge PoBoy, but I did...really enjoyed the food n atmosphere. Only down side was finding a place to sit, but I'd eaten this food standing up if I had to👍👍
Joe Quan
The best oyster Po-boy at any price, their pricing just happens to be much more reasonable than other places.
Steven Toffel
Decent spot, but felt the sandwich lacked the wow factor. Shrimp breading in Poboy was light and good but overall didn't live up to the hype. Also place is dirty and very crowded.
Jason Pelish
Oh, when you want a Po-Boy or especially a Muffeleta this place is great. It's small, so it's probably going to be a little crowded, but if you want great chow just stop and eat here.
I'd go back all the time if I lived here. New Orleans is a great city.
Chuck Hodge
Nice local spot, great poboy, regular sandwich is huge, usually crowded so be ready to share your table
Rick Noll
Great, some of the best po-boys in the quarter. Some of the best po-boys in all of New Orleans. I have been going there everytime I go to New Orleans. If your going there the first time you must try either the roast beef or the shrimp po-boy. Then you will stop in and try any one of their over 70 sandwiches and they also serve breakfast po-boys. TRUELY A CAJUN INSTITUTION.
First Last
Beautiful, giant poboys. The only bad thing about them having the best muffaletta that I've ever eaten is that every muffaletta hereafter will pale in comparison. 💖 …
Charles Watkins
Best PoBoy sandwich I have ever had. They are always busy, but the wait is worth it. Just great food.
Kimberly Shea
Awesome!!! Food is Great!!!! Everyone was very friendly!!! You get soooo much!!! It is so Good I can’t wait to go go back I want to try Everything!!!!!
Jason Lance
I’m so glad we stumbled across this place. Had PoBoys at many other restaurants but this place is on point! Oyster PoBoy with a side of Boudin balls is the way to go!
Tonya Johnson-Jenkins
Sandwiches were delicious! Long lines. The only thing we didn’t like was that they placed the food orders on the counter too and someone almost grabbed our order. We almost smacked some anxious hands. Seating limited. Get there early!
Chris Bing
Basic place but tasty filled baguettes, or rather po-boys. They are pretty huge though, so unless you're particularly hungry then 1 between 2 would suffice for lunch. Serving is a little chaotic at lunchtime, but it works.
Cory B.
Johnny's is one of the classic po-boy shops in the city and never disappoints. Will have a line at lunch but that's just because it's so good. The po-boys are big so consider getting a half portion. If crawfish are in season definitely get that, it's delicious and they put so many on the sandwich they'll be falling on the ground if you're not careful. Efficient service, but it's a small place so be prepared to get it to-go. Definitely visit if you want an excellent classic po-boy in the Quarter.
A. G. A.
I enjoyed the crawfish Po-Boy, fast service, affordable and friendly staff.
Only con: they don’t accept Credit cards.
Shaneka Smalls
Now this was a first time visit for me and we left the Big Easy with full bellies. I ate a shrimp po-boy. One of the 3 teens had the shrimp dinner. My oldest son had a cheeseburger po-boy, I think. My daughter had a catfish dinner. Everybody was happy!!!
Ivy Geyeman
Big Po-Boys! I tried the alligator sausage which was kind of spicy but really good. My husband had a shrimp po-boy which was excellent.
Matthew Lloyd
Got the Roast Beef Po-boy here twice while in New Orleans. One of our favorite meals for sure!
Adam Webb
That is one damn tasty sandwich, the roast beef sandwich was amazing with all the extras! Only issue is queuing and eating in a small space, so expect to share tables with others.
Keith Ogilvie
Top class Po Boy. Great service and the food was great. Surf and Turf was the best Po Boy I have had in NOLA
Robert Carr
Some of the best Poboys in town. A lot of food for a little money.
Ben Dukes
Long lines, short hours, PoBoy was awesome...great price... don't expect to find a seat. A lady gave me a free cup of gumbo 😊 …
María Franco
The gumbo was a little bit spicy but the po'boys was really yummy. Fountain drinks and good ambient.
D Jackson
So good. They were out of softshell crab, but the catfish was delicious. The staff was super friendly. Get you one if you're in Nawlins!
Gregory Wrenn
Yum! Authentic local cuisine. Loved my roast beef Po-Boy.
Chris Brown
My favorite po-boy in town! I recommend the crawfish or oyster po-boy. Seating is limited, but they also deliver in the Quarter.
Dwight Hobberechts
It's a small place but lots of people come to enjoy their food menu. I had a fried shrimp plate which comes with fries, a small lettuce/ tomato salad and a small piece of French bread. It was plentiful with the fried shrimp which were hot and delicious. I will go again when I have a chance and try another menu item. There is also some more eating space in the back dining room.
Cameron B
Try the Surf and Turf with a Dixie beer. Make sure you get there before they close... And bring cash.. no cards accepted here.
Glenn Kroll
Crowded as heck but the cashiers were pleasant and friendly.... food was all pretty great but it took a long time
Pratik J
Quite a few choices in Po Boys, Salads and Seafood plates.
Not the best kitchen or prep area as the whole place didn’t look systematic.
Accepted Cash only which seems pre-medieval.
The seating area is very congested.
They are famous but doesn’t look like they can handle long lines.
Food was decently good.
Coin flip. Go if you have a chance and don’t mind the kitchen state for a meal but you won’t regret if you don’t visit.
Daniel Mawn
Fantastic place and excellent service. The place is very busy but it is worth the wait!
Starsha Frederickson
There is seating in the back! We were so glad someone told us as the front was packed. We all got different PoBoys and loved them. Everything was delicious and fresh.
David Sanders
Everything that we ordered was good. Fried chicken, shrimp and fish all worth the calories.
Jay J.R.
All the praise that is written is well deserved. Great food, period. Prime reason for visiting this spot.
Manuel Minjarez
This is a tough one. I really wanted to like. The shrimp smelled like it had been refrigerator or too long. The chicken was dry and tasted like it was from the freezer aisle. Alot of really good reviews so maybe their heart wasn't in on it? I'd try them again...maybe best of 3.
Mike Zollner
Good food, really enjoyed the gator sausage and of course red beans and rice on monday
Tahosée Germainlozada
Convenient and cheap for large family meals. Great location. I only gave 4 stars because they are closed few days throughout the week which is a bummer and they can improve on the grits and shrimp sides which is on the dry side. Shrimp on grits requires gravy...to me 😜 …
Andrea Shepherd
This is what makes my heart happy after growing up in Southern Louisiana. The poboys are so well done and the variety is pretty good. I'd say to make a stop while here.
Heather Peters-Berkey
One of the best! I had the Johnny's special (ham & roast beef) it was delicious! These sandwiches are so large you can easily split them! The girl at the counter was very friendly and helpful. The tables could be cleaner but the food and staff are great!
Drake Mednik
Get the Johnny's special: beef and ham topped with some roast beef gravy. Cash Only!!
Michelle Dwyer
Had a crab cake po-boy amd hush puppies.
Would have taken a picture of my po-boy but i devoured it lmao
Amazing food ❤
Kirsten Jackson
Came here in October of 2019 but forgot to review at the time. It's almost a year later and this place still sticks in my head! Fast, friendly service and super tasty food. I had the shrimp po'boy, as it was my first experience with such a thing and it was fabulous! The sandwich with fries is definitely plenty of food, the portions of both are generous. If we ever make it back I will definitely be getting a meal here again. Didnt have enough time to see, do and eat everything I wanted to while there the first time!
Maverick R
Excellent po-boys made with fresh bread. Can't wait to go back. Seating in the back , follow hallway on the left.
Helen Nixon
We stopped in for breakfast before heading out on the French Quarter. Good food, friendly people and good tips on what to see!
Ben Cool
Absolutely fabulous. Nice big sandwich, flavors are good. I got the special which was a shirmp po-boy with fried green tomatoes. Not sure what the fried green tomatoes added, but didn't detract so oh well, a dollar lost I guess. My fiance got the catfish poboy and it was good too. The flavor of the bread, the seafood, the batter, even the lettuce and tomato was all pleasant. Only thing I would change would be more remoulade sauce.
Fries were good, hush puppies were good. The sides were not the highlights, the sandwich was. I'd give the sides like a 6/10 and the sandwich straight 10's. The poboy lebron'd this sandwich to the finals.
The seating area was fine. Not to many seats, not to few, but a little loud, and the line cuts right through the restaurant. small details in the grand scheme of an amazing sandwich.
Jacob Crowley
The french bread is simply pure...it stored in paper sack/bag similar to large bag of potatoes...indication of freshness. And the entire experience each moment of blis.
Gumbo, hints of okra and a portion of crab. AmAzIng
Michael Garcia
Great little eatery for a quick bite. The food is great, obviously the po-boys are a must get (it's in the name). The gumbo is also a must get.
The place can get pretty packed but seating is easy to find, there's the front and back seating areas, and since it's a quick bite people are usually in and out. The folks are nice and quick, but regardless of how fast they are the place is packed so expect a little wait time.
john stock
We ordered a shrimp and a roast beef Po'Boy on our visit. This place was always busy, and for good reason. While the shrimp sandwich was very good, the roast beef one, with the delicious gravy slathered on, was fantastic! The prices are very fair when compared to other eateries, the only complaint being that they are pretty slow on the serving side of the equation. A 10-15 minute wait time seemed to be the minimum, hence the 4 Star rating. Perhaps we caught them on a bad day.
Gayan Dias
Great well priced po boys. Ordered the johnnys special which was well sized and had great debris.
Tabia Muhammad
Food was super tasty and convenient. A local recommended this place and Im so happy we went. There is no table service. You just order and eat there or in front of the nearby river. I got a veggie omelette and it was super juicy. I highly recommend grabbing a bite from here. GREAT FOOD !
Monique C
It’s a small spot, but everyone is very friendly and made me feel right at home. The shrimp po-boy is amazing!!! Every bite was loaded with tender, juicy shrimp and the bread, lettuce and tomatoes were fresh. The spicy sauce on the side was also delicious! I wish I could have one of these sandwiches right now!
Anthony L
Great sandwiches. They have a back room with additional seating.
Josh Lubrano
Muffaletta! This place was jam packed and seating was limited so I'm glad we got a seat. The sandwich was amazing.
Marie Brock
We loved the poboys! Surf and turf, shrimp, oyster and chicken were all enjoyed by everyone! Local goodness!
Jeff Hale
The roast beef Po Boy is a must. Juicy, moist, succulent, and all other descriptive words to explain how great this sandwich feels in your mouth!
Candy Comb
This place was recommended by a local. I ordered the 1/2 shrimp po-boy and gumbo combo. It was good, but I had better. The staff is very nice and patient. The dining area is small, so you may not have a place to sit after you order. It closes early, so make sure you watch the clock if your going to dine here
Christopher Garrison
The most amazing po'boys...period. the surf and turf is unlike anything you are going to find at your run o the mill po'boy place. Besides that, they have the most creative menu.
If you are visiting, it's a no brained. If you live in New Orleans the menu is enough to keep you from being bored.
Seldom Seen
Seems crowded and small when you walk in but there is more seating in the back. The Poboys are made to order, with hot+cold ingredients. The bread is soft with just enough crunch on the outside. Sweet tea is properly sweet. Free drink refills on your own. Eating with friends or sharing a table with a stranger (a new friend?) Is easy. Comfortable, friendly atmosphere. Highly recommended.
Erik Shagdar
A bit of the main strip, but worth the detour. Jambalaya had chucks of protein instead of bits
Thuc Anh Nguyen
Best po-boys! I don't have any photos because I took one bite and I can't stop. I got the beef and the shrimp po-boys and I could have more if I wasn't too full on those 2 big po-boys. You gotta check them out if you visit French Quarter.
Brittany Williams
2 experiences.
First experience was good the food was good the staff was nice it was clean. No complaints.
Second experience wasn't as good:/
We were about to order and one of the ladies fixing food grabs a pen from the counter that the lady at the register was using... she has gloves on, she writes on the paper to identify the food that she just made and sets the pen back down at the register... THEN proceeded to continue fixing food without changing gloves. Thats disgusting.
Miguel G
This place is good. We are from Oregon and this is the second time we are in new Orleans and we stopped here again. The food is very good. But what makes this place awesome is the people that make it. The po boys are our favorites of my family. Keep it going guys, good and simple, and thank you to the crew in there. Make sure you pat each other on the back for the good food.
Angel Philibert
I love this place! Such a great place to eat at and go to when ever your in New Orleans! I love there Poboys and the history behind there start! The staff is always ready to make it a great experience by serving you fast and with a smile! Nice portions never hurt : ).
It’s also a great thing to see the owners daughter there welcoming customers with a warm and friendly New Orleans smile!!
Thank you!!
Scott Enzweiler
Out of the 3 muffulettas I had on my last visit to the Crescent City, Johnny's had the best. Had a side of hushpuppies that were also very good. I really wish I'd got a whole muffuletta to bring home with me. Will definitely be going back to Johnny's on my next trip to NO.
Corrina Narro
Messy but so good. I got the bbq beef and mmm it was so good!! Long line is worth the wait for these mouthwatering sandwiches, just make sure you gotta napkin 😂. …
LawNerdAmber (Athena's Child)
The customer service is great, the food is better. I got a BLT. It had probably a pound of bacon, thick cut and cooked to perfection. They only take cash. I should have taken a pic but it was too good. I ate half when I got back to the Hilton, and the other half a few hours down the road, both halves were delicious. My only regret is not asking for whatever yummy dressing they have. You could smell it all the way up the street. Definitely recommend having a meal here.
Victoria H
Delicious variety of poboys prepared amazingly quickly by the excellent staff. Don't be scared of the line! Small location makes seating a bit crowded, but they do have upstairs seating as well and get the crowd in and out fast. It's worth it even if you have to eat standing up! 😉 …
Dave Letourneau
Best breakfast in the quarter! Every visit to NOLA has a meal at Johnny's. We also grab a muffaletta to go for the airport every trip.
Tyra Rabalais
Definitely worth the wait in line! I had the surf and turf, with a side of seafood gumbo and potato salad. DELICIOUS! I couldn’t believe I had never eaten here before during one of my many visits. Will be on my list of places to eat now! New Orleans food at its best!
Adam C
Counter-service, very limited seating inside. Cash Only. Very small dining room, was unable to get a table after waiting for about 20 minutes. Had an excellent roast beef po-boy (Johnny's Special), jambalaya was mushy and honestly not very good, salad that came with the jambalaya was hamburger lettuce with a sliced tomato. Restaurant was very full and very warm. Staff looked to be working very hard, but honestly kitchen looked too small for the cooks. Very mixed feelings about the restaurant.
Jeff Behn
Seventeen napkin meal! Tasty roast beef Po Boy! Be prepared to get sloppy. While the sandwich was really good, In my humble opinion, the red beans and rice was the star. Simple, filling, and delicious. Great for a filling lunch. Whole sandwich is huge. Normal appetites will be more than sated by the half and a side. REALLY good tea - offered sweet and not. Sweet was too much for me, but I'm a Yankee. Unsweetened was very good.
Paul Eklund
Good genuine place, reasonable prices, good food, not fancy. Breakfast too.
Grace H
The best Po-Boy in town. Highly recommend if you are looking for authentic cajun food in NOLA. We went to a few different places and this one was by far the best and for a good price. It was a perfect hidden gem for a foodie looking for good places when visiting downtown. I recommend the combo of the 1/2 sandwich with gumbo or red beans and rice.
Spencer Fields
Had the shrimp poboy. It was above average. I've definitely had better. Biggest complaint was the price(around $33 for two poboys) and no available place to sit and eat in the restaurant. My daughter and myself had to go outside and sit on the curb to eat it sandwiches. Not something you want to do in early September heat.
Heather Buckland
We stopped in here on the recommendation of a tour guide down the street. Had been in NOLA for several days and still had not had a decent po-boy. Got the shrimp po- boy and my husband got the roast beef one. Phenomenal and the staff was so friendly.
N R
Ordered a shrimp po-boy and it was everything I expected. Lots of shrimp and good flavor. Bread was substantial and veggies were fresh. However, I'm giving three stars because the place itself could use a good cleaning. It's a hole in the wall place, but that's not an excuse to not clean. I couldn't help but stare at the black sludge in between the counter and soda machine while eating. This place could be a five star place after a nice thorough cleaning.
Roy Druin
No trip to New Orleans is complete without a stop to Johnny’s! Breakfast is awesome, getting a seat could be a challenge.
Alyssa Lamp
Atmosphere was a little hectic and the place smelled of grease...BUT that's part of the package. If you don't want a "burger joint" type of place don't go. The FOOD was REALLY GOOD (My son got a poboy) and I LOVED my salad (actually had more than just lettuce)!!!
Lucy Fischman
Good poboy...I had the half shrimp poboy and cup of gumbo combo. Drink was extra, but the red creme soda was worth it. Quick enough counter service, two small seating areas that were pretty messy. But just eat and you'll be glad you did. I'd say it's a bustling atmosphere.
Oriebir Ribeiro
Fairly quick service but not in and out. Probably waited 10 minutes for our sandwich. It was pretty crowded so definitely people like it. I'd say our sandwich was so-so. Not bad but nothing to write home about. I wish it had more pow. We got the crab cake po boy.
Fernanda Alves
Very tasty! However the place needs a good cleanings.
Audra B (Brent Audra Reed)
Staff was friendly and awesome! Food was soooooooo good! Cooked to perfection! Yummmmie!
Chelsea Kitchin
I live 1000 miles away from this shop but still dream about the roast beef po boy. It's the first thing on my list when I get back to New Orleans. Very nice portions but it's so good you'll eat it all.
Bob Ark
The ratings are justified, this is awesome. The we had the roast beef and also the shrimp po-boys, both were awesome. The beef was a bit salty for my taste as I have been cutting down. The ambiance is what you'd expect - packed, humble, busy, lively.
Jennae Faucheux
Food is delicious. I ordered the shrimp poboy and it came out nice and hot. My husband ordered the italian sausage poboy and it came out steaming. Prices are reasonable and the service was good. The reason I gave it four stars is the front is small and since it was lunchtime, they were very busy. People were waiting in line right next to us as we ate. There is seating in the back which I did not see since I had my daughter in a stroller. Plus, there was a sign for seating upstairs but it was roped off. I would definitely eat here again.
William Aultman
Everyone in New Orleans claims their Po-Boys are the best, but Johnny’s Po-Boys truly are. A must try if in town. I recommend the fried shrimp or fried oyster “dressed”... add plenty of Crystal hot sauce and enjoy. Truly one of the best sandwiches in the Crescent City! Cash only.
Sara Bee (urbancashmere)
Great experience. Split a shrimp po boy and cheese fries with the husband and it was a perfect mid afternoon nosh. I'm airways intimidated by French bread with its tough crust but this was the best bread I've ever eaten. Slightly crowded but everyone seems to move quickly in and out so seating wasn't too much of an issue. I can't wait to come back!
Wayne Ng
Deep fried filling in a sandwich! If that's what you're after then come on down. These guys do it quick, big and fast. Plenty of meat options as well as seafood options. We had the catfish which is delicate meat and they did a nice job maintaining the texture. Seasoning was ok and they have a good range of hot sauces to kick it up a few notches.
The sizing is pretty big, so unless you are super hungry or eat super huge amounts, the average couple will easily get away with sharing one (the pricing actually seemed to reflect this).
These guys are pretty much just open for lunchtime trading (including an early or late lunch).
Michiko T
huge servings. get the fried green tomatoes!
Amanda Gambill
Cheap Po Boy with a large portion size great for sharing between two people. Restaurant is small and definitely becomes cramped rather fast. The employees are nice. Overall, the po boy was less than average. There was way too much bread. The sandwich could benefit from more dressing, less bread, and a lighter coat on the fried sea food.
Rathna K
I was told not to miss Po boy sandwich from this place when I visited New Orleans. I did have Po Boy sandwich at a different restaurant and wasn't too thrilled. I thought Johnny's probably does it way better than others. It wasn't much different. I had the shrimp Po Boy with all the dressings. It was just a Subway footlong with fried shrimp.
The place was too small and you most likely will have to do a take out.
The reason I have three stars was for their gumbo which tasted good.
Bob Ramstad
Quality food at fair prices. Cash only.
Brian Potocnik
Came back here again and it was just as amazing as last time. Fried shrimp po'boy is soooooo good. It's a must visit!
Dylan Wagner
For it being my very first poboys the food was amazing!
Ray Reyes
The food was great but the space is pretty tight. If there is no seating in the front there are a few tables in the back otherwise just take it to go.
Vicky Tusken
There is only one place in the French Quarter to get a Po boy and that is Johnny's. It's the bread, how they dress the sandwich, and the best ingredients. Be prepared to wait... there's nothing fast about a Po boy from Johnny's, but that's why they are soooooo good
Sara Carrizal
This was the first place we stopped to eat. It is very yummy. We got muffuletta and a catfish po'boy. It was enough food for an army. The portions are crazy big. When busy, the front part of the place gets really congested, fortunately there is more seating in the back. You do need to have at least one of your party wait at the counter for your order, because there is no table service.
Seika Omine
First Po boy and first trip to New Orleans and so glad we came here to experience it! I got the shrimp po boy and it was delicious! Can’t say enough about it! I didn’t even get to take a picture because I was so hungry and dove right in! You have to go here if you make a trip to New Orleans!! Will be back next time I visit!
Alexandra K
Good but long wait ! There was no line to order but took 25 min to get 2 shrimp po boys on Sunday at noon. The bread seemed a little stale but everything else was good! I like Commerce better but they were closed.
Jay Keyes
On previous trips to New Orleans, I've seen the lines that form in and around Johnny's Po Boys and always wondered why people would wait in such long lines for a sandwich. The online reviews on this place are all over the map, with many claiming Johnny's to be the best po' boy in the city, and others dismissing it as a place that has cruised on its reputation and turned into a veritable tourist trap.
I suspect that the truth is probably somewhere in-between. I stopped by for a Fried Shrimp Po' Boy with mayo and lettuce.
First, the bad: The sandwich derived much of its actual flavor from the salty batter on the shrimp, and tasted a bit plain to me. The shrimp were good, but when deep-fried and placed between bread, there was something missing. Even with the "fixings", the sandwich seemed too dry for my tastes. The french bread roll it is served on is large, and the bread and deep-fried batter overpowers the other ingredients. Johnny's probably needs to put more mayo on this sandwich, or I should have sought out some hot sauce to add.
The good: The roll is very good, the kind of thin-crusted, light french bread roll you can only seem to get in New Orleans. The other good thing is the size of the sandwiches. The sheer amount of fried shrimp is substantial for the price. I could barely finish half of my sandwich, which was enormous.
Michelle McMayo
The sandwich was okay, I chose the roast beef poboy with the side of red beans and rice. I felt like my sandwich was missing something, the bread seemed a bit too dry and it lacked flavor.
The red beans and rice was very tasty though.
Cameron Grant
Delicious little po’ boy shop in the heart of the French Quarter. Definitely get the fried shrimp, and don’t forget to get some fried boudin balls! This spot is worth the trip. You may not be able to find seating, but it’s still worth it!
Andrew Method
Amazing shrimp po-boy. Definitely worth a visit in New Orleans. Cash only, so come prepared.
Dawn
Absolutely my favorite poboys in all of NOLA. So much selection, so many choices, and the quality is amazing. And they are so friendly to tourists while still taking care of locals, they are magical. Love this place!
Bobby Maguire
Po boys are made very well and the jambalaya is amazing. Only was in town for five days but made it to Johnny's Po-Boys three of those days because it was so good. Highly recommend the alligator sausage Po-Boy, one of the best sandwiches I've ever had.
Jay Murray
CASH ONLY PLACE!
HAD THE BBQ BEEF AND MY LIPS WATERING JUST THINKING ABOUT IT! FOODS REALLY GOOD! I Wish my cheese fries was nacho cheese instead but also tried the bacon egg and cheese poboy and it was good too overall it took a while to make the food the place usually packed and closes early like 430pm but alot to choose from and they're huge and keep you FULL!
brendan
Great stuff, wish they were open little later :)
Joshua Ford
The homemade beef po boy was probably the best sandwich I have ever eaten in my life. The staff were friendly, the prices were very reasonable, and there were a lot of great options available. But wow, I'm gonna remember that beef po boy for a long time.
Abel Rojas
Gator Po'boy. That has to be something you try if you've never been here before. The food is great, though at first it seems pricey - but once you see how much for you get and how tasty it is, you let that go real quick. Also recommend the seafood gumbo! The combo listed for half sandwich and soup is going to be your best friend if you want to get a little of everything
N S
My family and I went here for lunch. It was not too crowded, and we found some seats in the back. We ordered the shrimp po boy, Johnny's po boy, and chicken tenders. The shrimp po boy was a bit on the salty side, but was pretty good. The Johnny's po boy was good, but very messy. The chicken tenders were crispy and good. Overall, the food experience was good and the prices were reasonable. I would come back here again to try some of their other dishes. Just make sure you bring cash because they do not accept credit cards.
Im GabBay
Loved the alligator po boy! Just pay attention whenever people say no tomatoes. I'm allergic and you still put it on there. They also need a microphone for calling out orders. So pay attention or your food will just be sitting there.
Christine Morhac
Worth the wait in line! The woman who took my order was sooo pleasant. Lots of endearments used with all of her customers to make us feel like we were part of her family. Made me feel good about life. And the shrimp po boy with gumbo I ordered exceeded my expectations, having never had one before. I took a picture of the restaurant and the street sign where it is located, then immediately sent to my son in North Carolina so he knows where to come for THE best po boy in New Orleans when he visits in June 2020. Even took a menu so he can see EVERYTHING Johnny's offers beforehand. If there are no seats available inside because they are slammin' inside, just find a spot outside and enjoy! Just writing this is making me hungry for another, but alas, I am back in Ohio. ☹
Landon Bontrager
Good place to stop and get a po-boy sandwich. For the price you're gonna get a huge sandwich. I opted for the 1/2 sandwich and seafood gumbo deal and was still stuffed. We all had left overs later in the day since the sandwiches were so big. My only problem with the place was the lack of seating options. This is a cash only place too so be prepared. Family of four and we spent and easy 50 bucks but worth eveey penny.
Tim Vandehey
Great Po-Boys, but you may want to split one with a friend, they are HUGE!
Brian Smith
Always enjoy Johnny's, have one of the best breakfasts in the Quarter. Was a little disappointed this time because they didn't call our number audibly enough, and by the time I went to the counter to check our food had been sitting there for a bit. Gotta communicate better through the speaker. Biscuits were burned on the bottom, that was a bit of a downer. Minor problems this time but we'll come back. It's worth the stop.
Alicia Johnson
Food was fast and hot and extremely good. I really enjoyed my visit. I moved from New Orleans after Katrina and haven't been here in years. I'm soooo hapoy I came.
Sean Hasling
This is one of those hole in the wall places. While I thought they were inconsistent on their french bread French Toast (mine was good, another member of my party's was mushy), their po-boys are absolutely incredible. Might even be the best in town. If you come during a busy time, expect a 2 hour wait just to get to the counter. Off hours generally sees you in and out relatively quick, but never think this is a place to get your food super fast. I can't attest to delivery or phone ordering though.
Brett Duncan
Surf and Turf Poboy is all that needs to be said. Perfect balance of flavors and the gravy is nice and thick, not watery like many other places. This is my favorite place to get a poboy in NOLA
Bill B
Great oyster po-boys! Get the combo!
Beth DeVine
Classic joint huge Po boys. Gumbo is seriously banging. Cheers
Byron Benion
Be ready to wait in line at this iconic po-boy restaurant. It was good, but not great. The muffaletta was the best I have ever had, and well worth the wait! Catfish very good. Shrimp was okay. This place is a solid 4 stars.
Nicole Benford
I literally haven't had a bad meal in NOLA. Johnny's Po-Boys is open for breakfast and lunch. I had the catfish breakfast - the catfish was well seasoned and crunch. My eggs were friend exactly as I requested and my English muffin was cooked on the grid let creating a crust on the enlish muffin...I had never had an English muffin this way but it was a nice treat!
Note that this place only takes cash (although they have an ATM in the store if you need it and the out of network fees are only 1.50)
Fred Watson
Place is always packed. No frills but tasty. I had the shrimp po boy which was quite good. My son had a chicken po boy that, to my surprise was absolutely awesome! Very meaty and juicy with light batter. Some of the best chicken I have had and I'm not a chicken guy. Fries were under cooked and mushy. Don't waste your time with them. All in all, good casual food. We will be back.
Keith Massey
Fast friendly service. One of the best poboys I have ever had. As far as the price I felt it was reasonable for the area. It was more than I could eat myself. It is local so it got busy fast enjoy the atmosphere and don't be in a hurry it is worth the wait.
Michelle Loewen
Massive portion! I had the shrimp po boy. Its served on a loaf of fresh bread- get it dressed with mayo and pickles. The deep fried shrimp was just a little spicy but so good. I could only finish half but they provided a take out container for the rest. Saw a sign for jalepeno hush puppies- 8 for $3.25. Think I'll be back for those later!
kat fields
The po-boys were good. Serious points taken off for the fact that they did not toast the French bread w/ the roast beef which is a big no-no in New Orleans. The muffalata was really good, only comment on that otherwise I'd too many carrots in the olive salad. Very friendly staff. Great lunch stop n go in the quarter.
Brandon Buchanan
Really good po-boy, but there are better ones in New Orleans. Their po-boys are huge!
Joseph Cline
My family and as always come here for a poboy when we come to NEw Orleans. I’ve never been disappointed. The original French fries and gray and the shrimp are amazing. Bowl of Gumbo is very good and the staff are very friendly.
In 2017 Hurricane Micheal forced us from our home. We went to NO to miss the weather and wound up at Johnnys. We were visibly tired and upset, the owner looked at me and asked me if we were ok. I told him we just got off the road and we’re tired. He said your money is no good here. He comped our entire meal for 7 people. That’s the type of people that run this place. Rare to find and never forgotten.
Joseph Marosey
Love this place. Our tour guide recommended Johnny's on our first trip years ago. I come here at least a couple times anytime I come to New Orleans. Breakfast is great and the poboys are my favorite.
T. Farmer
Personally I'm not impressed. My chicken was way over cooked. Though the staff it friendly they are very loud. Poboy for my husband he loved it. A bit pricey. $29.00 for chicken tenders, poboy and two drinks. But the again this is New orleans.
Cynthia Johnson
Poboys we’re awesome!
Denise Coats
This place understands customer satisfaction. It's small and crowded but that's part of the charm. The menu has a TON of items and daily specials. Go there for an authentic NOLA po boy...the entrees stand out, sides aren't too flavorful.
Danielle Hebert
I love Johnny's! They have the best blueberry pancakes I've ever had in my life! The alligator sausage is awesome, and the surf n turf poboy will make your head explode! Share with someone b/c it's huge!
Marissa Joers
GREAT poboys - a must-go in NOLA! I enjoyed the 1/2 roast beef poboy with a cup of red beans and rice lunch special, which was very reasonably priced for the amount of delicious food. Others in my party had poboys with sausage and shrimp on them, and we all loved their food. The staff were all very warm and friendly, and even though it's a small restaurant they could still fit a lot of people in there between their two different dining areas.
Mike Green Jr
Great catfish plate! Fries were excellent! My buddy enjoyed his po boy. Was a little cramped but well worth it. Sweet tea was great as well.
M K
Johnny's is always our first stop when in NOLA. The po-boys are solid, super tasty and pretty good value. This year we were there for Mardi-Gras and they were still able to pump out food in a timely manner. If there during a quieter time of year, it is worth dropping in for their breakfast..best value going around!
Jack Cox
This place is worth the wait. One of the best oyster po boys in town.
James Duke
Delicious, classic New Orleans fair. Poboys are on well made French Bread and are huge, definitely sharable. If you go with the Homemade Roast beef poboy, make sure the napkin holder is full. They also serve breakfast, but I haven't had the pleasure of trying that yet. Just off the main drive and across from JAX Brewery, it's in a great location if you're in the Big Easy for the day. Order at the counter and be prepared to wait, this is NOT fast-food, but it IS worth the wait.

Awesome Po-Boys and Muffalettas. The rice and beans are ridiculously good. Highly recommend the fried green tomatoes. Limited seating space. But a great eating experience!
Rusty Parker
Great roast beef poboy ! Red beans where excellent as well !
Elijah A.
Great po-boys, however the seating is a bit awkward. The capacity is split between front and back rooms. The bathroom is also barely par.
M. Anthony Hopkins
It's okay. Soft shell crab did not taste good at all. Shrimp was good. Catfish was good. Hospitality was good.
Allie
The food tasted good but it looked thrown together. The restaurant was packed was packed to the brim and it was hard to move around. the food took forever to come out. The establishment looked poorly kept up and dirty. The po-boys were incredibly messy and fell apart as you try to eat them
Alex
Shrimp po-boy and fries were delicious! Staff are very friendly and energetic. The prices are about average for the area, and you're getting exactly what you pay for. Can't wait to visit again
The good the bad and the truth!
BEST po boys in New Orleans!!
Second time back to the city and we made sure to come back to Johnny's!
Small restaurant but they have additional seating in back and up stairs. Staff is always friendly and each sandwich we have tried is amazing!!!
Sandwiches are big so sharing is always a good idea, and the muffaletta is a must try too.
Claude Poux
Not the best looking place, but the food is great. est Biscuits and pancakes. They must get their flour from heaven.
Jeff Poydras
Love this old "dive." Seating at this old joint is limited, but po'boys worth the wait. I got 1/2 oyster 1/2 crawfish. Extremely friendly atmosphere. May not be best in town - it's New Orleans chè - but you won't be disappointed.
Adam Cross
Johnny's is a small, old diner style place that serves up massive Po-Boy sandwiches. They offer a wide variety of sandwich options; I can say that the shrimp and blackened chicken Po-Boys are very good and very big. Depending on your appetite you may want to split one or try one of their half Po-Boy combo specials. It isn't open very late so hit it for breakfast or lunch.
Christy Hummel
This place is delicious! Yes, it looks like a hole in the wall and it's a bit crowded. The poboys are authentic and the price is right! You will love them. Try the Roast Beef Poboy you will LOVE IT! Also, the kitchen is clean! That's important to me!
Aly A
So good! After reading the reviews online for this hole in the wall we decided to try it: so worth it! My boyfriend and I shared a Po-boy and a beer and left full. Defiantly worth the price. Don't know how I'll survive in Texas without them!
Darrell Johnson
It was good...a bit too much bread. I ordered 2 whole ones and I should have just gotten one. Put the other 2 halfs in a to go box and bag and gave it to a homeless man. I was carrying it and at those prices I didn't want to waste a perfectly good sandwich.
Specimen Je
This is one of the best spots in the FQ for s simple, but fairly delicious breakfast. I usually get a biscuit with sausage, egg, and cheese. Clearly all ingredients are made or cooked in-house and hold up fairly well for several hours. My co-workers at a different restaurant in the area were big fans as well, asking for the location when I splurged n brought sumnin for everyone er before a shift when we expected to be busy. A small addition to the tip jar goes a long way in cutting your wait down and it is nice to see the free, clearly happy cook staff messing around and enjoying themselves as they dish it out to customers. Frankly, even if any of that raises wait time on food, it goes a long way to making it feel more like a normal, happy, family-owned business than as anything else in that quaint eatery.
Jorge Toro
CASH ONLY! Also best to call and place your order ahead of time because they tend to get packed real quick. Seating is very limited and at times you might be sharing a table with random people. The food is great and well priced!!! A shame that they close at about 5pm though. You can literally watch them cook your food/ prep it. Everything is also cooked to order.
Kellyann Herrington
Johnny's is the first place we head when visiting New Orleans. Their po-boys and gumbo can't be beaten. There is a long wait to get to the ordering counter, but I promise that it's worth it. It's small, crowded and run-down, so if any of those things bother you, this isn't your place. We think it just adds to the ambiance. Their classic fried shrimp po-boy is my favorite thing on the menu and, at a foot long, can definitely be shared!
Do be aware before visiting that Johnny's is a cash-only restaurant!
Dev Bryant
Best po-boys we had during our trip to New Orleans, when we return there is 0% chance we will skip this place! The gator sausage is awesome! Cash only, though.
Parker Feldman
This is the spot. Overwhelming amount of po-boy choices. Stick with the ones with stars next to them for your first time. The Johnny is awesome (beef and ham). This place is right near everything so easy stop while walking around french quarter. There is more seating in the back that you won't see at first.
Michael Sample
Roast beef Po-boy was great. Lots of meat, dripping with gravy on great bread, so get a fork to eat what falls out onto plate. Prices reasonable for the area. The place is small and popular to locals so wait could be significant.
Dana Portnoy
Great service and the best PoBoys! Definitely must visit when in NOLA
John Tilmon
Great muffaletta! I would have liked to try their other food because it smelled so good when I walked in.
Amber Schweitzer
I arrived 10 minutes before they closed. They were still very friendly, I ordered the blt as they only take cash and I had just $11 in cash. I swear that po'boy had a pound of bacon in it. It lasted me through two meals. One right away back at the hotel lobby, and the other about 2 hours later on the way home in the car. So glad I skipped the beignets and chose this place instead!
Ryan Cortez
BEST FRIED CHICKEN I’VE EVER HAD!!!! I schedule trips to include a Thursday just so I can get the chicken and a po-boy. Great staff make the wait that much more worth it.
Steve Marino
The roast beef po boy tasted just like it was supposed to taste. Lousy customer service (to put it mildly) and the wrong kind of break kept it from getting 5 stars. It's dirty in there too, but not as bad as Mother's. Just get yours to go. Two can easily split one po boy.
Caitlin B
There was a long line to order and a long wait time for the food, but the customer service was good and the food was worth the wait.
The prices were very reasonable considering the portion sizes. There was additional seating in the back of the restaurant and we were able to find seats there with no problem.
David Hammond
Legendary place, but waited over an hour for our order when it wasnt very crowded. Disappointed.
Riesa Lewis
Mmmm, mmm good! We had the combo meal with a po-boy and gumbo. I'm still craving that gumbo. They also offer some vegetarian options. Food was fresh and delicious. Will definitely pay Johnny's another visit the next time we are in town.
Keith Walker
Best PoBoy sandwich shop in New Orleans!! So good, we went twice while on our trip. Definitely worth it & will go back... So good!
Cypha Tree
FRIENDLY service , delicious ALLIGATOR sausage po boy & Jambalaya
Renato Cássio Santos
Great food, great atmosphere and fair prices.
Amanda So
Come here for breakfast, po-boys, and gumbo! This was THE place that I decided to pay patronage to twice during my first visit to New Orleans.
I highly recommend the alligator sausage breakfast. it comes with shrimp and grits, 2 eggs, an alligator sausage, and 5 hush puppies. It is great to share between 2 people without feeling too full so you can enjoy the rest of the wonderful eats that New Orlean has to offer. I also tried the oyster po-boy and catfish po-boy sandwiches with a side of their seafood gumbo. I learned that I don't particularly enjoy the bread parts of po-boys. The fry on the protein as well as the oysters and catfish itself, however, is worth dreaming about for days later.
Ariana Cagle
Cash only. Place is a little dirty - but that's expected for an old building. However, the tables could be wiped down. A little bit of a wait for the food; but worth it! Very good po' boy sandwiches and sweet potato fries. My boyfriend and I were able to split 1 sandwich and 1 order of fries. Very filling.
Tiana Jordan
The food was alright, and the wait wasn't that long. I would definitely go there again and try something else. Their gumbo looked delicious! It's in a wonderful location that exudes the fun atmosphere of New Orleans.
Dov Glazer
Picked up a dressed fried shrimp po boy, sat on the bench in Waldenburg Park, and watched the ships going up and down the Mississippi River. The experience was as delicious as the sandwich.
Jennifer Lu Gilbert
've never had po-boys anywhere else so I really don't have any basis for comparison. The po-boys were good here but they didn't rock my world.
We got the oyster po-boy, shrimp po-boy, catfish po-boy and johnny's special po-boy. The best one was probably Johnny's special because it was moist and juicy. However, I didn't come here to eat a meat sandwich -- I wanted seafood! I can get a meat sandwich at subway!
Unfortunately all the other three seafood po-boys were dry. With the seafood fried sitting in dried bread, the po-boys definitely needed more sauce. Of the three seafood choices, my favorite was the shrimp.
We got there at around 11:30 and there was about a 10 minute wait to order food. There's not a lot of seating so make sure to dive for the next opened table when you see someone leaving. The line got really long as we were eating so luckily we arrived early enough to beat the crowd. Even though I thought the po-boys here were just okay, the long line must vouch for something. So if have another chance, I'd like to return to try other varieties.
P.S. cash only!
ubriel bryne
This New Orleans French Quarter tradition was great. The food prices are excellent but bewar the cost of the drinks. The Muffaletta, toasted, was a surprisingly awesome sandwich. Oddly, our food order was delivered directly to our table where all the other orders were being called out by number. The dining area is extremely cramped but Ibstill recommend it.
Kaddi
It's very crowded, small and very touristy! But the Po-boys are good and huge. Share one, they come in 2 big halves. But I had better! The white bread is a bit too dry. The staff is not the friendliest but it's very stressful to work here I guess. It's famous that's why we wanted to give it a try but I can't recommend it and wouldn't go here again.
Dan G
This place is my favorite memory of New Orleans. It was busy and crowded, but it's one of the only places that serves amazing sandwiches at a fair price. I ate it every day for a week, if I ever make it back down, it will be the first place I visit.
Michelle Dwyer-cavedon
Had an amazing lunch here. The crabcake po-boy is amazing, as are the hush puppies! Cant wait until my husband and i can come back and enjoy it all over again!
Brian Stotelmeyer
Good price, huge portions, casual atmosphere. Had the shrimp Po Boy and it did not disappoint. Brad was light, sandwich was not over dressed and the shrimp had a light breading. Overall a good experience.
Anthony Omes
For a real New Orleans Po-Boy this is the go-to spot.
Buy one for now and one for later.
John Keller
Best po boys in the city. Expect a line around lunchtime. I'm partial to the Johnny's Special (house made roast beef and grilled ham) but have never had a bad sandwich here.
Mark Neal
The best place to for po-boys in NOLA.
Virginie Boulet
Had the Johnny Special, it was good, but too big and too salty for my taste. The service was excellent. Convenient location for a quick lunch if you're a tourist visiting the french quarter, but I've had a better po-boy elsewhere.
Biggums Redtop
Ridiculous selection, amazing taste. Got a shrimp po boy with extra sauce and it was just like I dreamed. I knocked off one star because it was insanely expensive. Cost me about $21 for a po boy, fry and soft drink.
Samuel Forty
Small place, packed, worth the wait! The turf and turf po boy is delicious and plentiful. Share it with someone or get the half sandwich half gumbo special. So good!
Natalie Donovan
The reviews are a little deceiving because I was expecting a good poboy with good service. I can’t say the poboy was exceptional. And the service was awful. The person at the register truly had no regard for the huge line. She chatted up the group in front of us for around 5 minutes with a decent line. Not to mention she asked the group if they were 21 and one of the girls said, no but she gave them all 3 local beers anyways. Poboy took about 15 minutes to come out, not too bad. Overall, I won’t come again. Also, the google prices are incorrect. I paid about $3 more for my poboy in the store then what was listed on the google menu.
I forgot to mention, they literally use kraft singles on my sandwich. I wish they would have used real American cheese.
V Huynh
Our po boys were ginormous and delicious. Oysters and shrimp were fantastic. Gumbo and red beans and rice the same!
Lee B
Got the blackened chicken and it was SO good!!!
Jackie Moore
we each ordered a Shrimp Po-boy, and it was so yummy. Make sure and get all of the sauces, truly a wonderful, and authentic experience. We were told by a local that this place is legit.
Terry Anderson
Best Po Boy in the French Quarter. Tight dining room but plenty of spots to park yourself and your sandwich. Beware the attacking soda machine, it is way too high to see how full your cup is getting, but that does not take away from the experience in any way. Surf and Turf is the best way to go for your first rodeo, after that the sky is the limit.
Stefan Attaway
I used to eat weekly at their Westbank Gretna location, and I do miss my buddy Denny! This one is smaller, and packed, for good reason, it's one of the biggest bangs for your buck for REAL Southern Louisiana food! We ordered two Roast Beef Poboys light on the gravy as we had to leave to eat as their was no available seating, so we walked the 1/2 block to the river and sat and ate. I warned my lady we should share, she thought she was hungry enough for her own, until I grabbed the bag with the two sammys and handed her the 4+ pound that was only 2 Poboys and napkins.
Chris Kao
We were in New Orleans for two days and came here three times! Mufaletta was massive and looked a lot better than the one at Central. Next time we come back we know where to eat. We were going to go to Court of Two Sisters, but changed our mind when seeing the buffet and came here instead!
Robert Wood
This place is AWESOME!! Best po-boys in New Orleans. An absolute must anytime. Shrimp poboy for breakfast!! Go early but if you are in a line it's definitely worth the wait......
ericka Caraway
So me and my boyfriend were on vacation in new Orleans. A local told us about jonnys. Well let's just say this is one of the best kept secrets in new Orleans. I'm so sad we dont have one back in Dallas texas!! Okay so very authentic cajun styles on the boudin balls and alligator sausage. (I had both) the roast beef po-boys are to die for!! Both times we went they were very busy but we got our food pretty fast. DEFINITELY worth the wait. This morning our breakfast was a sausage, bacon, egg, cheese side of alligator sausage *we put on ourselves* so so good! It's easy to get to located in the French quarter. They do deliver! Inside there are places to sit and eat. It was hot yesterday but nice a cool in jonnys. We will be back anytime we are in NOLA. Thank you Jonnys for the GREAT food! As always if you found my review helpful please give me a thumbs up so I get my points for being a local guid!

My wife and I got a shrimp po boy, catfish po boy, and a bowl of their jambalaya. We ended up swapping halves so we could have a taste of the other. Both po boys were awesome, the jambalaya was awesome and not over the top spicey. The atmosphere was friendly with strangers sharing tables so we all could eat and enjoy. The line does get long, but the speedy service is very impressive. If your in NOLA I recommend this place for a well priced and awesome lunch.

This was a fantastic little restaurant. Not having cash will catch you off guard and prevent you from enjoying it. However, this is a nice little hole in the wall that is a must stop place!

The Surf and Turf Poboy is my favorite. Lots of roast beef, fried shrimp, lettuce tomato and the most wonderful gravy! Make sure you have lots of napkins, because with this poboy, the messier, the better. The gravy on this sandwich is so good I could drink it! Johnny's is ALWAYS on our to-do list every time we are in New Orleans.

Very “authentico” po-boys
Have come here several times in past 30 years when in town and love their “half n half” shrimp& oyster po-boy ... enough for 2 people but still slightly shocked at $18 price (after tax) !!!
Prepared fresh for you with a smile

Fast and busy. Good food, good prices and huge quantities. Grab a table, they are hard to come by and are first come first serve. An excellent taste of New Orleans street food!

Amazing po-boys, friendly service! We come here every time we're in Nola. The johnys special po-boy is the best. The bread is always fresh and delicious even in the middle of Mardi gras when you can expect standards to drop, this place is still amazing!

This place is absolutely amazing. First time in New Orleans and I had to try a po boy. You can't go wrong with this place. I would have given it 5 stars but they don't accept cash which was an inconvenience for me before I hit an atm, but I'm glad I came back with cash. I recommend any club sandwich because I heard the seafood ones aren't that great.

It's nice. Not worth the line though...

This was hands down the best food we had in New Orleans!!!

Dear Lord, what ill could I speak about Johnny's? NONE!!! Hands down, this is our favorite spot for breakfast in the French Quarter. No frills, all thrills!
My wife and I still reminisce on the heavenly blueberry pancakes. We cannot go to New Orleans without eating here at least once. They deliver in the Quarter, too!

Shrimp po boy was good and the blackened chicken was great. The fried chicken was dry though. Deducting a star because one of the staff members was rude and angrily threw away soup near me and ended up splattered on the ground and on me.

Little less Italian sausage on the judge, as it was overpowering.

Best poboys around! I've been to several shops and this is by far the best one! (NOLA poyboys was the worst) I've had like 7 different ones and I love them all! I think crawfish and roast beef are my favorites. I come here every time I'm in the city.

I order half and half ( Oyster/ Shrimp). Bread was soft and the food was cooked well. I had to paid 50 cents to have my poboy dress with lettuce and tomatoes.
Brian Rutland
I didn't try the po-boys, as we went for breakfast. The breakfast items (especial the biscuits with egg/cheese/meat) are the perfect remedy for a night of drinking in the quarter, especially if one fails to get beignets before going to bed. Another place that takes a little while. Also, the place is cash only, as is clearly posted on the front door, so don't be "that guy" when you get to the register.

Best sandwiches in NOLA. Place is very small and will take atleast 20 mins to get your food but it is worth it. Do not recommend for large groups as finding a place to sit can be challenging.
Nicole Gepson
This was a suggested restaurant for the best po boys around and it really was yummy. I had a delicious roast beef po boy. You order at the counter and they call your number when your food is ready. Not a big place but I definitely recommend it.

A bit crowded, for all the hype I was expecting something above just a sandwich. My bread was untoasted and alligator sausage was so spicy I didn't taste the gator just belched spices a day. (Eww) The crawfish PoBoy was good that my boyfriend had. The staff was friendly.

A friend told me this place has the best po boys in New Orleans, and I wasn't disappointed. I got the shrimp po boy, and I don't see how it could have been any better. It was amazing. Be sure you bring cash as they do not accept credit cards.
Michael Saucier
As a local, I admit this place is a bit touristy and can get crazy crowded and busy on big weekends. I avoid it at such times (or use delivery) but I get a breakfast Sammy here at least once a week. They know me. They hook me up sometimes. Very friendly. Classic. Avoid the rushes and get a great breakfast or Poboy.
Alex DiCaprio
The most well known poboy shop for tourists. This place, while catering to tourists does at least live up to its reputation. The bread here has a fantastic crisp outter crust and soft core. I tried the chicken parm and wasnt disappointed. On average you can expect to pay around 10 dollars per poboy with a variety of options available. Make sure you get the fries, they are amazing

I had to go to Johnny's again this trip to NOLA! The service is fast, and the food is delicious! We ordered a muffaletta, Johnny's Special po boy, and drinks for about $25. There was enough for lunch and dinner for two people.

This is the real deal in New Orleans. A huge range of po-boy sandwiches at a reasonable price. This is always my last stop in New Orleans before getting on the train - beats the heck out of Amtrak food, and cheaper too. No credit cards - though they do have an ATM. Lots more seating than it looks like - just ask.

The food was very good. The price was good. These two items ensure that you will not be disappointed with your meal. Here is a tip if you have kids: Try to find a sandwich that two of your kids like and have them split it. The sandwiches are HUGE!! Also, skip on the fries. The sandwich is too much food already, you will have no room for fries. You refill your own drinks so you can get all you want which was a welcome sight after having to pay for refills at a fancier restaurant the night before. There was a wait of about 10 minutes when we ordered, but it was lunch time and the place was packed so that should not be a surprise. Also, it might look like there is no room for seating when you look in, but they have more seating in the back. You just walk in and go through the narrow opening on the left side beside the counter. We found empty seating back there. I had the catfish po boy and loved it. My wife loved the crawfish po boy. The kids split a sausage po boy. If you have one of those kids that only likes fastfood, well they have a hamburger po boy, although we did not order it, I seen a kid at another table with one. They also sell Johnny's Po Boys shirts for $13. My only regret is that I did not get one. Nothing seems more "authentic" of a shirt for the French Quarter than a shirt from a small Po Boy restaurant.

"Cheery counter service" isn't how I would describe this place at all- more like tense, busy, and rushing you away from the counter. But they make very good, huge sandwiches. I would definitely recommend the pastrami, dressed.

Johnny's is a very popular place. I has the grilled muffuletta and it was fantastic. The portions are large. Everyone in our party enjoyed their food.
Robby Deal
This place has really big and really good po boy sandwiches. This place was really bussy at the off time we were there. We also saw it is part of a food tour. So be hungry or split a sandwich with a friend or significant other. They have some extra seating and tables in the back area.
Brandon Peacock
I had a couple of po-boys while in New Orleans and this place by far had the best ones. Plus there are over 40 different ones to choose from. They do get busy for lunch but it is well worth the wait!

If you are in downtown New Orleans, this is a must place to eat. Huge sandwich. Can split easily between two people. Walk up counter ordering and seat in available seats. Established in 1950. Located in the heart of the French Quarter at 511 St. Louis Street, where it has continued out it’s 3rd generation Legacy. Johnny’s began in early 1950 when Johnny DeGrusha and his wife Betty opened a grocery store and sandwich shop at 506 Charters. Later that same year a larger location became available around the corner at 511 Saint Louis Street. The business continues to thrive at this location and is now in its third generation of family.Great tasting po-boys. Will definitely be going back.
