Reviews of Politics and Prose Bookstore
Dondré
A good book store, nice staff and the bookstore is a pretty good size with a good selection of books. In the basement is where you will find a coffee shop/café. There is a decent amount of seating if you want to work or sit and eat. Despite it being in the basement the lighting down there is good. I had a chai and an oat bar. Both happened to be very good.
Lauren Hoffman
Not at all overrated- genuinely terrific, enormous and navigable selection. Check out their sale section- we’ll curated with current gems that are still full-price most places. Tiny cafe in the basement - would recommend for coffee & pastries, likely not for your whole meal.
Young
Pretty good bookstore with a charming cafe to grab a quick snack and coffee.
Robin Majeski
Wonderful bookstore with very knowledgeable, friendly staff. Great selection of books, especially fiction and childrens' books. Excellent author events Comfortable environment. Cozy coffee house downstairs with good food. Highly recommend.
Luanna Falcao
Very cool atmosphere here. Beyond the books, they have all sorts of very interesting gifts like puzzles, mugs, drawing kit...
They have some chairs, so you can sit to explore the books you picked.
Downstairs they have a very nice coffee, wich is good place to use your laptop
Michael Bogin
First rate independent bookstore. Very well curated selection of fiction and nonfiction generally. Science fiction/fantasy is good, but not as extensive as some other stores. Still a must visit. Don't miss the cafe downstairs!
Leah Belber
One of my favorite small bookstores in dc!! Great hidden sale section! Tons of little items and totes too. Great cafe in the basement!
Jarryd Delaney
No one ~really~ needs to be told this, but Politics and Prose is one of the best bookstores in DC. Of course, it is not as "hole-in-the-wall" or small sized as some other really great books shops in the city, but it is still one of my favorites. The different locations are also a benefit to different residents and visitors! I do love their shop at the Wharf too. Feels open and new. If you're visiting the Connecticut Ave. one definitely check out some of the local eateries around there too!
Christina Harris
I came from Philadelphia to attend their recent author of it with Francesca Ramsey in conversation with Damon Young. The event was excellent. I’m so glad to see how they regularly bring authors to connect with the community. I do wish they would require an RSVP so that they know how many people to expect and could plan to have adequate seating. There were about 40 people standing in the back after seating ran out. I do like how the staff worked to make sure the event concluded on time and helped everyone meet the author in a timely manner. I also noticed there coffee shop and wine boutique downstairs which was a nice touch for a bookstore. They seem to have a pretty wide selection of books on all various topics. I would love to attend another event here.
Sacha Place
Very nice book selection and clear help from the staff! Cafe is delicious. Kewp in mind you aren't allowed to use the ladder .🤥 …

In one word; "Wonderful". My god; where have all the real bookstores gone📚? This one truly is a place for all ages with its variety of books & energy brought on by those that come for the purchase of the book or for a book reading by the author....or both🤗; which is why we were there today. "Politics and Prose Bookstore" allows the reader to feel comfortable and confident when looking for a book suited to one's liking. The staff are fabulous and the vibe is intoxicating. A must see place to go to to experience for yourself.
Richard Taylor
A great place to browse for a good read. They regularly bring in authors to discuss their work. The coffee bar/grill in the basement is great as well
Ghaib Al-Usul
Good bookstore, though the collection could be a bit more extensive. Great coffee shop downstairs, extremely nice staff. The salad bowls are especially generous and delish.
Damien
Just went for lunch so my review is only for the cafe section. They got really busy during the lunch rush so we waited a while for food. Ended up getting the wrong order so this took extra time to get it fixed. The workers were friendly but maybe they were a little understaffed when I went. Got the 1/2 lox sandwich and tomato bisque soup. Sandwich was fine, soup was not great. If I were to go back, I'd probably get something else.
Nakul Nayyar
We loved the coffee shop in the lower floor. The walls are covered with paintings from local artists. Coffee is great too with plenty of food options.
Mark Weinress
Great bookstore with a charming coffee cafe. Well worth a stop by.
Bren Miaira Kutch
Great 2-level bookstore with a coffee shop downstairs and lots of sections full of brain food, including some comics, manga, and graphic novels. This is the largest of the P&P locations. They host author talks many days out of the month so remember to grab a newsprint magazine to see what's upcoming that month. They have a pretty good selection of stationary supplies as well as literary and social justice themed gift type things (eg bookmarks, playing cards, socks, plushies, pins), plus lots of puzzles and CDs - so it's a nice place for the modern analog person. Great place to find something(s) for a friend instead of buying online.
Karla Westerband
Book lovers unite!! This place is amazing and have a great variety of books and knick knacks. Will definitely be visiting again...
Joanna Lo
Love this place. Picked up my 1st grader at regular dismissal for 1:1 time with me (rare) during a rainy Monday. She had the fruit custard and hot chocolate while I asked her about school (no interruptions from her younger sibling). We then browsed for books in the kids section. She loved the upstairs grown up section too and browsed a book on Presidential portraits (I had no idea where she found it).
Nancy LaVerda
Very interesting and eclectic bookstore that runs interesting events. Coffee shop is nice. Was disappointed in size of hot tea. Only small size.
Kayla Hyland
This large and spacious bookstore is amazing. They have about three store fronts worth of space inside of this store, and it's filled with all kinds of books. The staff was friendly and helpful, and there was a good variety of books offered. The cafe downstairs also was reasonable and cozy, even if I wish they would offer more things to snack on. If youre looking for a great bookstore, this one is definitely one of my favorites.
Jason Williams
A great book buying experience. The store looks pretty small from the outside but there are tons of books spread across two floors. There's also a small coffee shop on the bottom floor which was unexpected but cool. They have a wide selection of books across dozens of genres and sub-genres, I liked that the kids section is mainly on the bottom floor. The pricing of books is a little shaky, you'll likely find many books there that you could find much cheaper elsewhere. However, there were also some books that had been reduced to an unbeatable price (not as common but I found some). You could spend hours here if you have a love for books and the store is very well organized and the staff are pretty helpful. Definitely a different experience than going to Barnes & Noble and I would probably come here if I had to choose between the two. I am a avid online book shopper and will continue to be, but I'll check this place out from time to time just for the atmosphere and experience.
Natalie Jamison
A local favorite and for good reason. A vast selection of unique books with a knowledgeable and helpful staff.
Once you find your new book head downstairs to the den coffee house and wine bar to grab a drink(I suggest the London fog) and dive into your new read.
Leslie Williston
Great bookstore. I loved the wide selection and the staff were friendly and interested in the books we were buying.
Matt Campbell
my favorite unionized bookstore in the DMV. their coffee could be bigger for dining in.
Arne
Its obvs a well known establishment, but they live up to expectations. Their book selection is great and the atmosphere in the store welcoming.
Randall Smith
Live the ambiance. The decor is a rustic modern complete with hidden secret restroom doors and modern art. Three ping ping tables. Friendly service and delicious pizza!
Tripp Wickard
Politics and Prose is a great book store with very kind and helpful employees! However, they don't get all five stars because they lack diversity in their book selection. I understand that DC leans more left, but it is always nice to gain insights into what people on the other side of the spectrum believe or how they interpret something. How will you grow or understand others if you only read things you agree with?
willie gluck (Commander Bozo)
Wonderful place! Great staff who helped my granddaughter find some cat books.
Chris Sheft
Great little bookstore and cafe. Lots of author signings and the like. Parking is a bear at gifts DC location, show up early for events.
Joe White
Friendly bookstore just a short jaunt from Tenlytown AU metro stop. and great speakers like David Corn
Alexandria J
The Cafe downstairs is good. The bookstore is great. They have an extremely diverse book selection and the staff is very helpful.
Creed Robbins
Excellent book selection with a very cozy aesthetic. It feels like I'm walking into a place that actually loves books when I'm here, which is a good feeling. There's an even more cozy coffee shop located downstairs, as well.
behn farahpour
i can get lost in this book store. too bad they dont have more architecture books.
Justin Rosentover
Best bookstore in the area, great selection of books and a lot of political and fun souvenirs. I have never been to a better bookstore. Their food is pretty good too. The staff is excellent and they are very helpful. They always have great suggestions and will always be helpful. I can always count on a great book when i go to Politics and Prose.
Prose
Very helpful staff
Good food
Large selection
Cons
None!
Charles Lowery
Love this bookstore--great books and excellent staff!!
Samantha deManbey
Great cafe selection and relaxing place to hang out. Some unique books and displays. If you are in DC you must stop by this place!
Ross Martin
An incredible selection of thoughtfully curated books in a thriving setting with great energy. If you can’t find something here to stimulate your thinking, you might be a zombie!
Parking is a challenge. The back parking area is shared with several other businesses. Take a scooter over!
Celesta Tow
Great place to take your kids- nooks and crannies to read in and snacks for them coffee for you.
Richard Strother
A neighborhood and DC wide treasure. The latest and best books in all genres. I always walk in not knowing what will catch my eye and walk out with two or three new reads. The store hosts frequent lectures by current authors. Their website is a great source for those who can't drop in .
Marjorie D
What a gift to be able to walk to an independent bookstore and feed my spirit - such helpful staff and all sorts of options have kept us feeling safe through the long year. The curbside pickup has been super but it feels even better to be able to wander the aisles for a few minutes now. Thank you Politics and Prose for the fantastic recommendations and excellent service.:)
A M
Great store! It has everything you need and more.
Marc Hershkowitz
Nothing like a small local bookstore to make my day! Great selection, friendly staff, fantastic event schedule. Five stars!
Natasha Shokouhi
Politics and Prose is a solid classic.
It's super clean, organized and has an excellent selection of books that you can't always find everywhere else. They carry both new and used. Two stories of glorious books!
They also have great events, book clubs and member deals. They support a lot of local events, organizations and authors which is a plus.
I've never actually had their coffee or food, just tea. But their menu does look delightful. They seemed to have a generous amount of vegetarian options.
DC classic.
Karine Rafferty
The bookstore is of course great. If you just want coffee the Cafe is fine, but aside from pastries there isn't much to eat.
Rebecca Hall
This bookstore is amazing! They have author talks nearly every day! The coffeeshop was really nice, too....and they even serve beer and wine, which is unusual for a bookstore. I want to go back during the day sometime....we wanted to buy things, but the line to check out was really long and they were about to close. Very nice place. They have gifts and novelty items as well as books. I wanted to buy a tea ball, shaped like a cat, and they have some really really nice notebooks.
Julia Costacurta
This review is for their online service, although I've been to the physical location a few times and would highly recommend visiting! I ordered a limited edition printing of Pride and Prejudice through their online store, after finding it unavailable everywhere else that I looked. I was amazed that within a week, Politics and Prose had ordered me a copy and had it on the way to my door! You truly can't beat indie bookstores :) No other place I checked offered to track it down! Thank you so much for the incredible service!!
Andrianna Dunbar
I love love LOVE this bookstore. It is my go-to for gifts for everyone. They have a fabulous children’s section. The staff knows their stuff and can offer recommendations if you are stumped. They have a great non-book gift selection as well, and lots of unique and fun “DC” gifts. In addition, they have interesting author-talks and a great coffee/cafe.
Jeff H
I've been coming here for decades and this is the best bookstore in DC. The staff are so helpful in recommending books not only for myself but for gifts even when I give them a vague idea of what I'm looking for. They seem to always have such excellent recommendations.
The only major pro/con of this location is the non-stop events. While cool, if you are just trying to get a book, probably not a good idea to come in the evenings during the week. When an event or author signing is occurring, ALL parking is gone and it's a bit awkward trying to find a book with a huge group of people attending an event. Again, a pro because they have these events and bring authors in for readings and stuff but a con if you are trying to shop during these times. Still 5-stars because I just avoid these times and everything is posted online well in advance.
Josh Buck
Only been here once before several years ago... And that was just to get a hot cup of tea on a cold day.
Staff was super friendly and super informed. Knew all the books we were looking for and had info about future books. Recommended several series we didn't even know about.
Michelle Nam
Live nearby this bookstore and it came highly recommended. I love many bookstores and this one is one of the best. It's locally beloved and for a good reason. There's something for everyone! They have a huge selection, two stories worth. They have a large sale section as well as a music area. The workers are knowledgeable and can help you find and recommend things. I was impressed that they even placed out the season's picks by one of the workers in the music section. They also have many events by famous authors, politicians, and other writers. It has a warm and welcoming feel to it and there's even a hidden coffee shop on the bottom floor. There's even gifts and souvenirs for the tourist or the locally proud. Can't recommend this place enough and I'm glad that they're expanding to other parts of the city!
Linda A. H. Prell
Ready to lose yourself in this store. Many interesting finds!
Geek Cornucopia
Great bookstore! The staff is helpful and friendly and they have an excellent selection. In addition, they host events and author appearances on a regular basis. Highly recommended!
Donovan Maguigan
There needs to be more bookstores likes this! Really impressive amount of signed books by authors available on the shelf. The store also hosts an impressive number of author events and signings.
michelle Hargrave
The taste and open mindness of this bookstore has been a wonderful "breath of fresh air" compared to the Barnes and Noble chain store I'm used to back in Texas.
Kevin Xu
I have ordered several books from them and have always had a great experience. They recently sent me a signed copy of a book I ordered as a nice surprise. Great business, will shop again here.
daniele menache
Best in class: The best bookstore in the US. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and their events are first class. I’ve always found the books I needed, even if at times obscure titles. I now order from them regularly to support independent bookstores. I also order puzzles from there! And new baby gift: book of the month.
Robert Stout
Unbelievable book selection. Very interesting author speakers. Yummy food down stairs. Support your local independent book store.
Bill Schauman
Good local bookstore, conveniently located for the upper NW DC professional classes. Very good on politics and history. Lectures and signings by visiting authors. Good selection of greeting cards. Espresso bar where the sons and daughters of those same professional classes can get summer jobs. The store will be happy to ship your books for you.
Fred Dyda
Staff was neither particularly knowledge nor helpful. Maybe store is too busy before the Holidays.
Parisa Nassiri
Great place to read and enjoy a great coffee! It’s usually crowded. No wait lines and great staff.
Anna Husain
This is my favorite bookstore in DC. It really gives back to its community. There's a great membership program and it is worth the cost for the sales and the money you earn back. The employees know everything and are never rude. The store is more than a bookstore, it's also a venue for both brand new author readings to notable famous award-winning authors. The cafe below is great too. Everything that an independent bookstore should be.
Phillip Carruthers
Overrated. Staff isn’t very welcoming. Had mask above my nose the entire time while in the store and was asked to raise it. When I pointed out it was clearly above my nose she about had an aneurysm and stomped away. Also the selection seems like it’s been vetted by the Ministry of propaganda. Comes with the territory I guess. Guy in the coffee shop was nice to me so there’s that :)
Henry Su
Fantastic selection of books, including those for children. And look for their all-star lineup of author-speakers. Finally, start reading the book you just bought downstairs in the Den coffee shop.
Sima Z
A lovely neighborhood bookstore with a great Cafe attached to it.
I love catching breakfast or a cup of cappuccino. They have nice desserts and small plates. They have unusual and tasty selection of Teas . I would say it's a neighborhood Hangout.
The bookstore has a huge selection of books and an entire section for children on the lower level.
All together a fun place to hang out.
Elizabeth McGaffey
Huge selection. Went for an author's talk and there were 3. Excellent presentation - generous question period. A wonderful way to spend a rainy evening.
Ellis Jackson
using my gift card, to celebrate black history month and the funnier side of life 😁❤🤎❤ …
Matthew Henry
My favorite bookstore in the world. They have an incredible collection of books and very helpful staff. The book talks, almost one a day, are great as well.
The cafe is amazing too!
Sarah Diligenti
Love the place, have been going there for 26 years since I arrived in DC.
Since Covid, no in-person authors' readings. I miss those.
My only issue is the store does not carry enough books that interest me. Too much politics, not enough prose, and not enough Middle Eastern or Eastern Europe/Russian prose.
Daniel Ducharme
This is a great stop. My wife and I often attended the Friday night open mic nights. However, since the very nice renovation that was only recently completed, there haven't been any.
The bookstore is great, I wouldn't buy a book there necessarily, because...Amazon. However, they have these great quirky postcards that are really fun. I have bought quite a few.
Syd DeLeonardis
I love this place. When I checked out a history of jazz book, the cashier took the time to tell me all about one of their upcoming events with a jazz artist. It’s the perfect bookstore, and the coffee shop down below has AMAZING sandwiches and drinks. Solid 13/10.
Jason Debeniotis
Our favorite bookstore in DC Metropolitan area. They carry a great selection of quality books and music (contemporary and classical).
The offer a wide array of discounted books in the basement along with a huge space for children's books. They can even print books out of circulation or your own work.
Their staff is attentive to your needs. There are always on a daily basis authors invited to speak about their work.
The cafe recently redesigned offers a great selection of drinks and food items that change seasonally. The space is a bit cramped. Wish laptops were banned on the weekend like A Baked Joint does.
Larry Kern
Incredible polite and helpful staff...best children's book department I've ever experienced.
Victoria Goncalves
Very helpful staff. The atmosphere is chill. Don’t skip on the sale room because you can find some nice gems there. Also the kids section is very fun
Jasmin Hollywood
DC's best bookstore in the city. Michelle Obama even came out to sign her books here and the line was all the way down the street. On a regular they have a great selection of good books for adults and children.
Samuel Lerma
It had a stellar selection of books available, friendly/helpful staff and a nice coffee shop/hangout area in the bottom section. They seem to have a lot of events with authors and there were quite a few autographed copies of books available to those who are into that sort of thimg.
Definitely worth a going a little bit out of the way to visit
David Sarokin
A diverse, thriving (I think) independent book store with a large selection and a smallish coffee shop. Lots of author readings and similar events as well...
Bill R
One of my, sorry let me start over. My favorite bookstore in the DMV. With Book talks and a coffee shop, not sure what else one needs in life. Actually, cheese. In any case, check them out.
Khara James
Visited for the first time today and will definitely be returning. They had a great variety of both children and adult books. I appreciate the diversity in the literature and was impressed by their covid prevention efforts.
Genna Kules
An independent bookstore in DC just off Connecticut and Nebraska Ave. They have a large selection of fiction and nonfiction books, a great Kids section and plenty of knickknacks and comedic/unique greeting cards.
I love this bookstore. My family has been shopping here since before I was born.
Support local bookstores!
Keep them open!
Shop at Politics and Prose!
Brittaney Wright
Best bookstore in the city! A great selection on every topic of books, and a new room (expansion) for discounted and remainder books. They expanded the children's section downstairs into the old discounted book room. Additionally, they bring in amazing authors that speak in the store and at outside venues. A true gem for the city.
Mazen Elkurd
This is my favorite book store ever. They have an amazing selection of books, an incredibly knowledgeable and helpful staff, amazing staff picks and they always have great books signings and other great events. It's a great place to spend some quality time and browse through their wonderful selection.
Ron
I loved this sophisticated and trendy bookstore located in the Chevy Chase section of Washington, DC. Plenty of books. Very knowledgeable and friendly associates to help you with book recommendations, questions, and anything else about the merchandise. I loved shopping here.
Terzah Horton
Went here while waiting for a plane after a meeting at Chevy Chase. The store is inviting and warm with comfy chairs and a coffee shop. Needed a book for the plane and the store clerk was really helpful. She found a book I had heard of and added one of her own. I read the book she recommended on the way home the first in the Magicians trilogy and it was thoroughly enjoyable
James Douglass
A wonderful independent bookstore with an excellent layout which naturally draws attention to the eye for new and interesting material! The children's section downstairs is just as extensive and the staff are very friendly, engaging, and knowledgeable. The store hosts, or organizes elsewhere, readings and talk-backs with many famous authors. The cafe downstairs was recently expanded with delightful sandwiches, teas, juices, and coffees with free WiFi.
月ング子ング
It is a small quaint bookstore with a large selection of books and an awesome coffee shop!
I originally came for a book signing, but I see myself coming back again in the near future. The food/drink options are all superb and the bookstore itself has a good atmosphere. There is also a book printing machine which is fun to watch.
Anne Nelson
Great space, amazing books and other clever items. The coffee shop is a great place to catch your breath. On any given night there will be one or more amazing author events happening. Every town should have a spot like this!
Jessica
Glad to have a vigorous independent bookstore in my area, especially in the age of amazon. What they can't fit in the store, they can probably order for you. The young adult and children's sections downstairs feel like a magic catacomb hideaway. It's a place that invites you to linger.
Martin Dieu
Favorite local bookstore. Great selection. Knowledgeable and helpful staff. Even a wonderful coffee shop in basement. Looking forward to the in-store readings once again, after covid.
Henry Lavinder
I love this bookstore and the den in the basement is a great study spot.
Paulette Paglia
This is the only independently owned bookstore in DC (they just opened 2nd store also in DC.) My family and I love P&P and have been customers for over 15 years through different owners. Great selection of books, literary-related gifts, DC & political themed gifts and wonderful special events scheduled all year long. Customer service varies from outstanding to a bit rude. I still give 5 stars because I love the store so much. We're also big fans of the cafe downstairs, The Den. Excellent coffee, chai and sandwiches. They also serve beer & wine. Very nice people too. Small frequently over-crowded parking lot behind the store. Street meter parking out front and time limit residential street parking as well.
Adam Gresek
This place has a great selection of books and is nice for browsing around. There is a coffee shop in the basement and they often have authors signing and speaking. Also, they have one of DC's most fun trivia nights!
Edit: There is a free parking area in back, but it gets very crowded, very quickly.
Tabitha Mayo
I think I found my new hangout spot!. Today was my first time going into the store and I love it. It's bright and clean and the staff is soooo helpful. I haven't been in a bookstore like that in a long time. I even got a yearly membership. And as a bonus, there's a Coffeehouse and Winebar in the basement.
Joseph Raczynski
One of the last great bookstores in the DC area. They seem to constantly have people presenting on the top floor. Below grade they have a really nice cafe. The space in the basement can get tight, but it adds to the character.
Always feel free to reach out to me on Twitter @joerazz
Yvette Weigold
Good food and coffee! Wish there was more space! Great selection of books and gift items, etc. I loved that they have a back door to the cafe so you can park back there and run in for coffee and not have to deal with the whole bookstore if you don't want! It's right on the bus line too so it was easy for me to get to!
ytcarol
Huge selection of books in modest space. Two levels with coffee/pastry area downstairs where Wi-Fi crowd gathers. Very nice gifts as well. Regular visiting notable author talks in small space for free. Street parking plus free lot out back.
Chloe Kamman
They have a wonderful selection of books for all ages and of all genres and the staff is very nice and helpful. The little items such as candles and socks can be overpriced, but other than that I have no complaints.
Stephen Melville
Cute store plus cozy coffee shop downstairs
Elaina Hundley
Probably my favorite indie bookstore in the DC area (this location is great, but check out the new locations in Union Market and at the Wharf). Best staff, great selection, superb event programming, cozy atmosphere, and a phenomenal cafe. Don't miss this gem of a shop.
Charlene Hughes
It is small but nice. The bookstore is quite clean. It has an elevator, public restroom, and usually without corona rules it has a bustling cafe on the bottom floor. I always find great things there
R Hunt
Lots of author events and signings on a range of topics. Popular authors appearing in the store can lead to events that are somewhat crowded, so plan to arrive ahead of time to get a good seat. They sell lots of fun gifts in addition to books.
Shashi Bellamkonda
Amazing bookstore, has a variety of books, and a downstairs section for kids as well as teens. A cafe as well, if you are hungry. Many well known authors come to this location, and sign books. Good to visit for everybody who visits Connecticut Ave in Northwest DC.
Dylan Welch
Went last week just to browse. Lots of choices. There's a 30-minute browsing limit so id suggest considering your priority book topics beforehand. If they have to be at capacity when you arrive, be prepared to wait in line outside. Friendly staff.
MJ
Amazing local bookstore that is a true community treasure! You can always find the latest books of political, social, and cultural relevance, as well as enjoy a delicious nosh and glass of wine or spiked hot cider in the cafe. No visit to DC is complete without a pilgrimage to this local institution!
Jane Ngugi
The ambience is delightful, with gentle background music. I ordered the Gluten free quiche, and it was delicious. First time I enjoyed anything GF. The service was pleasant too. If you like books, being in a cafe surrounded by the smell of new books feels so good.
Jennifer Green
This is a well-run, family friendly independent bookstore that hosts lots of events and has a widely curated selection of books. They do slack a bit on the genre fiction, but have recently begun to do better about stocking fantasy and romance specifically. There is a large children's section on the bottom floor with a separate side for YA. Also on the bottom floor is a cafe area with warm drinks, snacks, sandwiches, wine, beer, and wifi.
Elie F
Fun place to go to. Walking through the aisles and checking out books, getting a pastry or drinking a tea or coffee. They have featured authors talking about their books and autographing them. Nice place for 1 to 2 hours.
RaymondGW
It smells like books in here, in the best possible way. I'll always support bookstores because they have things that online sellers do not, like the ability to host interactive sessions with your favorite authors. I finally got to meet Kwame Alexander by coming here, and that was a great day. The people here are super knowledgeable and it's always worth a visit.
Adam Fagen
A wonderful bookstore and event space. Politics and Prose not only has a great collection of books, but brings in top authors and other speakers to engage in conversation with the public about important issues. A true gem of a community resource we are fortunate to have in our backyard.
Melissa Reitkopp
Love this place, it's everything you imagined and more from an indie bookstore. Great cafe with character, wonderful kids section, great selections for everyone. Plus, there's always an interesting author talk with Q&A!
Meghan Houghton
Our favorite spot for children's books and coffee/baked goods. The staff is extremely knowledgeable. Highly recommend this neighborhood gem.
Ralph Avery
Outstanding independent bookstore that offers incredible lectures and interviews of authors. It has a little cafe in the lower level that is full of charm and a great kid’s section there, too. A delightful place!
Charity Anastasio
I always find an interesting read I wouldn't have come across on Amazon or in a Barnes and Noble. Great children's section, YA section, nonfiction and fiction, sifi - fantasy, and even poetry. What awesome private bookstores used to be 15 years ago. We drive an hour to visit it several times a month. We haven't found anything like it in Maryland yet.
Steve Burke
This is one of the bigger independent bookstores in town, with lots of events and authors coming through. They really do have a wide selection of books (kids, fiction & nonfiction alike). Cafe is OK. Not very close to Metro, but you can bus there relatively easily.
M johnson
Politics and Prose is by far the best book store in the DMV area. What I enjoy most are the author talks; many are free and some are not. Although I feel some of the author talk prices are a bit high the experience of meeting the authors and receiving feed back from the questions you ask is well worth it. I am so grateful for what the new owners have done with Politics and Prose, they have helped me grow and develop my understanding of the world and on how to become a better person.
Kay Lightle
Fabulous choices of books for all ages, genres, religions and political trends. Plus crafts kits and puzzles to purchase. Delicious food and drinks in the basement. Excellent varieties of s speakers throughout the month. Wonderful place to meet and chat with people, if you desire.
Margaret McGowen
Top notch bookstore. Well informed and helpful staff. They have a broad variety of books and are happy to order when a title is out of stock. They host authors and experts across all genres. There is also a lovely cafe in the lower level.
Christina Marion
Fabulous local store with really incredible staff. They will help you find anything they can, and will hunt down what isn't in stock. They have an entire information department devoted to it. I also can't say enough about their frequent speakers and book signings. Having the cafe in store is very nice too.
Rich Bell
They are holding up a tradition of intellectual curiosity and community when targeting the mass market and razor thin margins have ended their competition. Large local book store which holds near-daily book readings (sometimes two per night). Most of their visiting authors and audience have a solidly liberal bias, but the store itself isn't particularly preachy. I wouldn't go hunting for a copy of The Art of the Deal here.
Todd Jacob
Cool place to hang out and grab a cup of coffee or a grilled cheese and bowl of soup while getting some work done on your laptop. The book store upstairs is small and limited but you can still browse and find something to pick up worth reading.
Megan McCarty Graham
Amazing local bookstore with curated sections tailored to DC/book nerd interests. A whole table dedicated to Hachette books? Stop by almost any evening for a book talk and signing or a cup of coffee in the somewhat recently renovated cafe downstairs or for weekend nerd trivia!
Amy Cresap
Such a cute little bookstore! They also have unique gifts and a coffee shop. I went to a lecture here, and it was fantastic. They have authors come in all the time, and it is always very well done.
M C Ertem
Great bookstore... The only minus is that they don't have comfy chairs to sit down when shopping, like the Bethesda B&N used to. If you are part of a group, have selected your books and the other people in your party are still browsing, there is no place (other than the uncomfortable cafe downstairs) to sit down and read while waiting for them. (The nicest thing about Amazon is that the entire experience occurs when you're sitting down. One does not have to kneel down or fold over to browse the bottom shelves in a bricks and mortar bookstore... :-) But, I still love P&P, it's worth the back pain!
Alan Dubow
Bookstores are dying. Support the good ones to keep them going. DCs best book store now offers a cozy coffee and pastry space in the basement.
dipika
An absolute institution in DC. They have every type of book you could want to read or skim or buy or gift. They do incredible author events, and all around the city. They also have a cafe/bar downstairs for group hangs. You can't visit DC without coming here!
je vf
Super wonderful place for readers (learners & thinkers). Superbly curated selection of intellectual, entertaining, and amusingly colorful dead trees. All that, plus a coffee/tea/wine bar downstairs.
Aside from the non-accessible Connecticut Ave entrance (go to the downstairs/back), what more could a thinking person want?
Andrea Barron
Great place to browse. Everyone wears a mask, uses handwipes when they enter. Excellent customer service too! Buy a book so bookstores don't go out of business.
B.C. Dodge
It's an awesome"little" book store with a nice staff. It reminds me of my local store growing up in New England. I will come back again.
One question - who is going to come clean my kitchen after they sold all those cookbooks to my son?
Toni's Table
Been going to this DC institution for over 21 years. Book loving staff, wonderful vibe, you feel your is I crease by 5 percent just by walking among the stacks. The cafe is rustic, offers some good selections, but I need to be in a certain frame of mind to hang out there.
Bruce Jones
The quintessential book store. Great book selection, a coffeehouse with delicious sandwiches, beer and wine. Wonderful author talks and book signing too.
Must place for tourists to visit for a true taste of Washington
Marius Commodore
As always, a treat. Fantastic independent bookstore, a mainstay of the community and devoted to the dissemination of ideas. I come here EVERY TIME I am in DC. Up there with Powell's, Seminary Coop, the Strand and all the other well known independent bookstores
Jackie D.
Entertaining. Lots of overpriced books one can get faster and cheaper on Amazon, but the people watching factor was impressive. Many pompous individuals who clearly are full of themselves milling about acting like they actually read only to run into a fellow jogging mom bragging whose 8 month old will be attending Princeton first. Coffees not bad.
Avadh Kishore
Always a delight to be here. Great collection of books and hot coffee to top it up !!
Austin Graff
I give this place a 5, because it may be the best bookstore in DC (Kramers in Dupont is up there too). Politics and Prose has so much history in DC and they use their name to bring in some great speakers/authors for free!
They have a large upstairs and downstairs with every book you can image. They even have a cafe in the downstairs wit ample seating, good snacks, and good coffee.
The only downside that really is a charm is that it's in Cleveland Park. It seems so far away, but I must admit that neighborhood is nice with many local restaurants nearby.
Pandu Harimurti
This the best bookstore in the world period! They offer a wide range of activities from book talk in the bookstore and other venues, trivia nights, etc. The-go-to place when I am in DC, even when I am there for a short visit. After 20 hour flight P&P is the place to be
solosian
An old school style bookstore, one that doesn't cater to every taste but has a distinct emphasis on good history, current events, and contemporary fiction books. The coffee shop downstairs was cute.
Heshan Gunawardane
A unique bookstore and cafe in this day and age of everything being online. Nothing like spending some time perusing through books and enjoying a fantastic latte!
Vernon Brown II
Grab a cup of coffee, grab a book/paper/magazine, sit down and enjoy. They have great epresso, coffee's ok too. This place is a DC institution that's worth visiting on merit as well. Great pastries, snacks, coffee beneath a bookstore. Go there. It's dope.
Nick Neagle
Bookstore is so amazing. Their new section is great too. Lots of deals. Their selection and service is the best. The events that they have are so good! So many good writers. I go back as much as I can.
Abby O
Politics and Prose is one of my favorite bookstores! It is so cozy and has a great variety of books. The cafe downstairs is wonderful as well! Overall, Politics and Prose is an amazing place!
Justin Bigelow
What's to say? Arguably the best bookstore in DC, it's an institution. Wonderful selection, helpful staff, great atmosphere. A+ in just about every way.
Brian Symmes
A classic bookstore that serves as a meeting place for book discussions. A cafe downstairs with ample table space, With a nice selection of teas and coffees. Also serving beer and wine. Organic snacks to go also.
Robert
This is a charming bookstore with a nice selection of books and a quality cafe in the basement. The food at the cafe was delicious and well priced. Overall, a great place to explore and visit.
Duchess II
It's much larger inside than it appears from the outside. Got assistance quickly and prices are comparable to the large chains. Didn't go to the coffee shop part but was really pleased and surprised at the variety.
Phil Frank
Great meet-the-author and book signing events, like David Michaels
Shaun Masavage
I've come here for several events (this time was for Austin Kleon) and it's always a unique experience. The store is well laid out, pleasant, and there's a coffee shop downstairs.
It's a neighborhood gem!
Paul Bartomioli
Interesting place. Great selection of books and the cafe downstairs has a decent menu
Francesco Ciriaci
Best bookstore in DC: a great selection of books, a staff that cares, book presentations and events and a nice place to also get a tea or a coffee. You cannot ask more, if you love books.
Thomas Scheurich
The coolest little spot in NW DC to hear interesting talks and meet interesting people. Personally, I'd rather just donate to them rather than buy books cause I'm a millennial and physical books just clutter up my limited shelf-space. All Kindle for me. I'll do so at the end of the year.
Dane Guthrie
Great place to buy books and read daily within the cafe or just do some work
Marie Mason
Fantastic assistance from friendly staff. Lovely coffee shop down stairs. I love the small town feeling of Politics and Pros bookstore nestled in a busy metropolitan city. Thank you for your assistance. Keep up the good work.
Katie Willard
A bookstore treasure, DC's own Shakespeare & Company. Great books, great author readings, great staff. Wonderful little trinkets to buy along with books. This store is my happy place.
Michael Mahaney
This was a shot in the dark when I found out Little Red Fox was closed today. I wandered over and was happy to see the variety of interesting books they had here. Going downstairs felt like going into a different world down to the coffee shop and gave me a nostalgic feeling from my gamer days of discovering a hidden easter egg. Anyways, i ended up getting a cappucinno, which tasted great and flavorful. I can't wait to come back again.
Yomz
Amazing bookstore, good cafe in basement, great assortment of books.
Perry Swope
One of a kind (should be more, sadly) neighborhood bookstore simply brimming with an incredible range of reads on virtually all subject matter with a knowledgeable and proactive staff; frequented by DC's finest literati as well as high and low brow book lovers, and the occasional celebrity - in a cozy, intimate store with food and drink in the basement. A real treasure in DC's northwest.
mary lama
This is a wonderful place to buy books. The people are helpful and the place is very easy to find. They also have a little restaurant that serves lunch and soups and sandwiches. The downside is it has a limited parking space. Otherwise it is a nice place to shop if your looking for books or just to have some lunch
Karina Valverde
One of the few places in the neighborhood that has an old charm. The first time I passed by I came upon a book talk and signing. I quietly wandered the aisles and made my way downstairs to the cafe. Despite the old world charm I think the cafe could use a face lift and serve up less bland food.
Razz V.
I'm new to DC and have been checking out the coffee/Cafe places. This place is hands down one of the best thus far.
It has a cafe downstairs in the basement. Doesn't serve fraps unfortunately, ha ha my fav. However, they do have a menu, pastry's, and coffee and tea of course. I go here to study. If you're looking for a quite place to study students, then this is not for you. Unless you plan on wearing headphones. Otherwise, expect the cafe to be loud, and busy always. It does get quite towards the late afternoon.
Next, they have a hallway connected to the cafe in the basement that takes you too their library. Humongous place. Looks tiny from the outside if you were driving by. Don't be deceived. The have a upstairs that has another two rooms filled with books, creative products and more. I love it. Fantastic place. Always has authors and speakers upstairs. Recommend it!
Rebecca Phalan
Hands down my favorite bookstore in the area! Can and often do spend hours here. Feel great supporting them and am a member. Have had the opportunity to meet and hear many of my favorite authors here.
Sidney Lippman
Politics and Prose is a wonderful book store with a huge collection of a wide variety of books and book related stuff. The staff is very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. The store has almost daily talks by authors introducing their new books.
Cheryl D.
Love the shop. Had a great variety of items. Will definitely return there
Andrew Mutavdzija
The iconic bookstore does not disappoint. There's a cafe downstairs with coffee, alcohol, etc., and they frequently host authors. I went and heard Katy Tur, MSNBC reporter/anchor, discuss her new book on covering the 2016 Trump campaign.
Allie Welsh
Great old school bookstore. Has what you are looking for. The folks who work here are passionate, knowledgeable and a little weird. Just like they should be nice cook book section.
Luke Hollomon
A beautiful bookstore that features a tightly curated collection, frequent sales, discussions with famous authors and personalities, and a coffee shop as well. There's no better place to buy a book on or near the District.
Evan Witten
The best bookstore in DC. Knowledgeable and helpful staff and an expanding footprint to give access to more of the city. If you want a recommendation, ask! I can't visit and leave without a great new read!
Variant Moon
Employees are some of the kindest people I have ever met. I was there while waiting for Comet Pizza to open, and I thought I would pick up JoJo's part 4 volume 1. The employee (didn't catch his name) had an amazing conversation with me about how part 4 is his favorite arc. They had what I was looking for and they most likely have what you're looking for. They have sections for social sciences, science, graphic novels/manga, religion, etc.
Vinny Coker
Great selection of books. Nice merchandise, hats, stickers, notepads etc. and good coffee in the basement!
Abhilash Prasann (AP)
Always organize wonderful events. Great collection of books as well. The inside coffee shop is above average. Great place to spend hours reading
Rashid Darden
Politics and Prose recently had an expansion of their own. Now it is easier to find discount books. There is less congestion now as well. As always, this is a great destination for readings and signings, but also for great gifts of the Washingtoniana variety.
Heather Dawson
Wonderful bookstore with an awesome coffee shop in the basement. This place has everything from impulse buys to art on the walls! You won’t want to miss this if you’re in the area.
Celma Costa
Great atmosphere, with a bonus bar downstairs. Great selection of books and magazines! The postcards have great artwork and are make witty gifts for friends.
Matthew Montgomery
Politics and Prose has a great selection of books, and they're all well-organized. Their selection of sci-fi, while not a distinct focus, was modern, and there was a lot I'd like to read. I'll be back here, given the opportunity.
April Crews
A wonderful independent bookstore with great books you won't find anywhere else including ones by local authors and an amazing children's book section. They also have wonderful author events.
Mary Beth Ruttan
A D.C. institution and a must visit for anyone who loves perusing local, independent bookstores.
charlie
Great bookshop with a pretty varied selection. It isn't as big as the chain bookstores so it doesn't have everything, but it has a lot more character and I almost always find something worth reading (even if I don't find what I was looking for).
Kris Juncker
Politics and Prose is one of the best bookstores ever. The staff are knowledgeable. Recommendations abound and there is no judgement regarding different interests!
Soledad Roybal
Great local bookstore.
June Perry
We lived near Politics and Prose when it opened and just recently moved a few miles away. This institution remains our "go to" bookstore and gathering place for coffee and conversation as well as for book signings and author presentations. It is a true Washington landmark.
Steve Mitchell
Great independent bookstore that offers author presentations most every night and a nice children's section. There's also a cafe in the lower level that serves coffee, alcohol, and light snacks.
Jon Greenberg
Great books. I'll give them a 3 out of 4 on staff friendliness. The first guy who helped us find a book was great
The guy at the check out was total sourpuss.
Joaquin Bernal
It's a great bookstore with a pretty big collection, especially when it comes to nonfiction related to politics (hence the name). ALSO, students get a (yearly?) free membership, so make sure to get that.
David Pilsk
Great store!!! Many different books, ranging from well known to New finds. The staff is very helpful with finding what you need or helping find something new. Highly recommended.
Leo Sampson
More books than you could ever read. Very good political science section.
Janelle Gera
No bookstore like it, staff is knowledgeable, need a recommendation? Ask anyone. Aesthetic is great and the events are epic. The original location is worth the trip north!
Paul Vassallo
They store was expanded and more space is available at the street level. They also did some work on the cafe. I'm not a big fan of the cafe but it is a comfortable spot for working and conversing.
Gweb
The staff and atmosphere are absolutely amazing, they go above and beyond in trying to help you find the books you're looking for.
Kat
I go often for their book talks.
Friendly place. Knowledgeable and helpful staff.
They also have classes. Open mic in their Den cafe. I've had a little food from the cafe and it was good.
Jacob Rathjens
This is the greatest bookstore in the world. They have a great selection, an awesome kids section, and bring in fantastic speakers. Also, a local bookstore that's succeeding!
Tim O'Brien
Wanting a copy of Leaves of Grass, I went to my local bookstore in Miami and asked
for anything by Walt Whitman. The answer was, “Walt who?” At P&P, I mentioned just the title of the book, and the clerk produced a beautiful hardcover copy. A knowledgeable staff is a treasure.
Christopher Law
Look at the calendar of speakers (or the crowd control on Christmas!) and you’ll understand the respect that this neighborhood bookstore has earned. The P&P/Comet one-two punch makes for a satisfying night out.
Trashy Hela
Wonderful costumer service. Very good book's, I would've spent all of my money there if I could.
Jason Strecker
P & P is a local book store that hosts numerous book signings each month. I attended a few of their signings when I was traveling more, some years ago. They were always well run.
I recently wrote a novel I call "Only The Beginning" about a girl's life during high school. It is set in the 1980s and keeping with that theme I had two friends of mine, professional wrestlers Nikolai Volkoff and Jimmy Valiant, provide a forward as wrestling was hot in the 80s.
I looked at a few self publishing companies but chose to go with P & P knowing that it will be the best place given their large clientele. The Opus book printing supervisor Bill was helpful with setting up an introductory appointment. I was to be helped by David and I was completely amazed by his level of help/customer service.
Whatever I asked to be done with the book he did and did it perfectly. The proof copy looked great but I noticed I was missing a few things. When I came back, after a week to go over any mistakes I made that I would see in the proof, David was once again helpful in going through the changes. I got some copies printed that I will be giving to friends who are excited for seeing my dream of publishing come true. I definitely recommend P & P as one of the best local book stores and recommend it to those thinking of self publishing if even just one copy.
I am looking forward to the book being sold on their online ordering and getting 2 copies to be sold in store. I hope people consider checking it out. I know, no matter the reception, I will be back to P & P.
Jason Strecker, author: Only The Beginning, thanks to Politics & Prose
Alison Howard
One of the last remaining independently owned bookstores, Politics and Prose is well known in the D.C. area for its extensive and eclectic selections, as well as its author events. There is also a cafe on the ground floor popular with the local writers.
