I participated in their Black History month bag grab promotion today and it was amazing! Great books selections, lots of fun puzzles and shirts and the music is bumping and we got to meet the owners! Just beautiful Black folks coming together for the love of books, highly recommend!

As a new Author I had an opportunity to fly to DC to visit this awesome Black Owned Bookstore. My 1st but it will not be the last #BlackBooksMatter

Hubby and I have been meaning to stop by and so glad we did tonight. What a wonderful, intimate community book shop. We left with a bag full of books that Christy, a really nice employee, helped us find for ourselves and a new speculative fiction book by Nnedi Orakorafor book for our school aged son. Highly recommend this community gem. Can’t wait to go back soon! We also got to check out great art installations within and next to the the Anacostia arts center and did some clothes shopping next door.

I checked out this store in person at the National Harbor. The store was beautiful, clean, and well-stocked. I will definitely shop there in-person again. As I like to support black-owned businesses, I am sad to see from the other reviews that their online ordering may not be the greatest system right now. But if you are local and enjoy paper books like me, I recommend them.
Deanna Freeny
This was my first experience going to the store and the staff was extremely helpful. They were able to give me suggestions on books I should read and the store in general had so many books to choose from. I will definitely be back.
Hypnotik Vanity
Awesome BLACK OWNED BOOKSTORE. Excellent customer service. I asked for recommendations and was given two. I took that and purchased both. Ready for my next visit.

I ordered several books for myself and my family before it was “trending “ to patronize a black owned bookstore earlier this year. Most of the order arrived very quickly. The other portions arrived later and they they kept me updated during the process. I love their virtual book meet and greets with the authors! Overall I will continue to purchase from them and I have already told several of my friends and family members about their great customer service!
Cindy B
Ordered four books online. Communication between me and the store was great! They are doing an awesome job at fulfilling their orders under current circumstances. I did have to wait an additional week or so to receive my full order (and I did!) but I honestly don’t mind waiting as long as it takes. At this point in time, it’s about supporting local businesses and keeping them afloat.

I made a purchase online with Mahogany Books at a time when many people were seeking out Black-owned businesses to support. After receiving a large influx of orders from around the country, there were understandably some delays in shipping. Mahogany Books went above and beyond in communicating order statuses along the way. Their emails were so personal and thoughtful, and I was thrilled when my books arrived. Even though I live across the country and may never get a chance to visit their store in person, they fostered the sense of community and relationship that makes small, locally-owned businesses so wonderful. Will definitely order again in the future.

I ordered a popular book around the time Mahogany Books was slammed with orders. They did a great job keeping me updated on the status of my order. I understand they've received some negative reviews due to back-orders and issues with their system deleting emails; they simply weren't set up for the influx of orders from what they said. I wish people would be more patient and give them time to adjust to the increase in their business. I did receive my book about a week ago. I ordered it June 13th, so I had it in less than a month.

1619 and more black banned books by weak colonizers' school systems. Ha!
Katherine Caton
I'm do not live in nor near DC so have not had the opportunity to visit the brick and mortar store. I am ordering online and have had a wonderful experience. They were extremely communicative when processing my order as they have received an unprecedented number of orders. I will definitely order from Mahogany Books again!
Maya Romero
The owners have done an amazing job keeping customers in the loop! They are understandably overwhelmed with the amount of orders they've gotten in the last month or two, but I am so appreciative of their kind and heartwarming email updates. In spite of the huge influx of orders AND the fact we're in a pandemic, their continued commitment to their customers is admirable. I will definitely be making a visit in-person once things calm down. Thank you MahoganyBooks!
Trinity Rich
Great phone customer service and painless purchasing process. Their online selection is robust. The only reason they don’t get 5 stars from me is because they didn’t have many books in-store and there were no LGBT books.
Hopefully time will allow them to beef up their in-store stock. I’m very thankful for this wonderful Black owner business
Alex Rollosson Halbhuber
I ordered a trio of books from this Black-owned bookstore and I couldn't be happier! They were very open about the delays that were caused by the overwhelming number of orders, as well as issues that were beyond their control. I recieved regular emails regarding, so I was perfectly content to be patient and understanding. I ordered another book last week, and will happily order more in the future!
Jessi Cooney
I ordered four books from their online store. I am absolutely blown away by the communication, many updates, and dedication to customer satisfaction during such an unprecedented time. Wow! Additionally, I can spend hours looking at their website and scrolling through their wide selection of books! I will certainly be ordering from Mahogany Books again and would highly recommend to anyone!
Emma Bayer
Easy online ordering with a great selection and recommendations/featured books and book lists. They seem to have been inundated recently, and their email communication has been excellent with periodic, heartfelt email updates. Looking forward to getting my order after a reprint/backorder.
Jennifer Hanson
I purchased two back-ordered books from the online store. Very grateful to Mahogany Books for good communication and ultimate fulfillment of my order during an unexpectedly busy time amid a pandemic. Looking forward to ordering again from this book seller.

Black Owned and Absolutely Excellent!! Everything from the Greeting to the Thank you. The books are plentiful and the kindness of the young lady working made my visit more than wonderful. She was knowledgeable and pleasant. With so many great choices I can't wait to return! If you are In need of a new book or a gift, Mahogany Books is your go to. It's located in the Anacostia Community Space with a host of other businesses that are just as fabulous. So go and be prepared to spend a little time enjoying the space, and grab a bite at Everlasting Life you will be glad you did!

Mahogany Books is doing God's work and I couldn't be happier to support their family-owned business. The work they do is so incredibly important right now, as is supporting small, Black-owned businesses and all creative pursuits and outlets from POC.
They are kind, communicative, transparent, honest and warm. Love seeing this family's photos in my inbox as they update me on my orders. This is an extraordinary family and an extraordinary business. ❤️
Megan Beal
Just got my books and I am so excited! They have a wonderful and large selection of books in every genre. Website is easy to use/order from and has great suggestions on it. Will be buying from this store again!
Briana Whitaker
I absolutely love this book store. I was on my way to the cvs, walked past the store and something just told me to go inside and thank God that I did. I ended up purchasing 4 books and plan to visit again soon.
Celeta Starling
I've been here twice since the second week they opened and I love this store already! The space is welcoming, the service is astounding and there is a wide variety of books to choose from. I forgot my debit card when I came and the owner helped me to set up Apple Pay for the first time. The location is perfect and I plan to return every two weeks for new reads. There is a nice sitting area located right outside the store where you sit and enjoy your book before heading home. I highly recommend anyone who lives or visits the DC area to stop by.

I ordered quite a few books in June. Because of a huge influx of orders, my order took a while to arrive and I am still waiting on one book. However, there is a small team running this operation and that team has had excellent communication about why orders are taking longer than expected. This is a family-owned business run by people who care about the community. Thank you, MahoganyBooks!
Throwing Bones
Ordered online. Though backlogged in the midst of a pandemic, they took the time to e-mail me, thanking me and ensuring that my order would arrive. If you order online, please know that even if your delivery arrives later than expected, you will get your books, packaged with care. I will definitely be ordering from you guys again!

My favorite bookstore in the area. It’s always eye-opening to experience books from authors from diverse backgrounds, and I appreciate how people of color are at the core of this business - not an afterthought. The best place to bring your business for all kinds of book enthusiasts. Staff is always awesome too.
Brandy McMahon
I ordered a book from this amazing bookstore and it was being fulfilled elsewhere (it was a signed book during covid). It took me about a month to realize I hadn’t received it. I reached out and Renita worked so hard to figure out what had gone wrong and to make it right. And now I have my signed book!! Thank you Mahogany Books, and big thanks to Renita!!
Jessica Michelle
Great store and great selection but I don't recommend placing orders online. I've had success with one order, another order with an item missing. The store is very difficult to get in contact with over email or phone. I've seen on their Instagram many others are having the same problem (my own comments got deleted when asking about my order on their Instagram). I'm sure they are overwhelmed with the impacts of COVID, but their online orders not reliable. Better to call (if you can reach them) and pick up in person.
Kassadi Gabriel
Ordered a few books from Mahogany Books after finding them on a list of Black owned bookstores. They have a great selection and amazing customer service, especially as they are dealing with an onslaught of orders! I hope to visit in person some day. Thank you!
Crystal Riggins
For me this place was an absolute slice of heaven!! I was so elated to have found this wonderful book store (TY! Fox 5 Zip Tip). It is so reminiscent of another book store i use to frequent and thought that time had passed. A cozy place where you can just sit and peruse the books and sn atmosphere that is inviting and soothing. The staff ( I am suspecting it was one of the owners) was engaging. Knowledgeable and seem to have a true love of books as well. Do yourself a favorite visit Mahogany Books with your children, friends and anyone who loves books! Extra special because its books, for us, by us and about us.

Its hard to find Black Owned Bookstores in DC, made more difficult east of the Anacostia. I love Mahogany Books for their commitment to carrying local and national works, focusing on books that offer representation for a wide range if groups, and the staff are friendly. Its not a huge store, but the energy and service is there. Thats key to me.
Marika Lyons
When I travel I like to find Black-Owned businesses when I can. I can't wait to go back to DC. The selection of books I wanted to purchase them all when I was there in January 2020.
Gerald MCINTOSH
Black owned book store east of the river. Just over the Anacostia River. Awesome small book store with great customer service and many options for the avid reader. They even have a rewards system that helps enhance the experience. This place is like going to family's house. They make you feel welcome when you arrive. Will give feedback on suggested titles and reviews on anything they have. Need more book stores like this.
Pamela Kaye
Their emails are super communicative! I really appreciate the thoroughness in them (and they are fun and personable to read, it feels like your friend wrote to you :) ). 10/10 experience buying books online from MahoganyBooks and I look forward to patronizing them again.
HAPPY CRAFTY CAT

Walking into MahoganyBooks is like walking into your favorite auntie's home. The smell, the music and the staff are welcoming. The books seem to call out to you from the shelves. The pictures of current and deceased African American authors is humbling and makes you feel like you fit right in, like you belong there. I love MahoganyBooks! I am a customer for life!
Amy MacCready

I love this family owned bookstore inside the Anacostia Arts Center on Good Hope Rd. SE . The selections offer something for my 5 year old as well as new interesting and classic reads for me!
Austin Graff
MahoganyBooks is the only independent bookstore "East of the River." According to its website, "MahoganyBooks is dedicated to meeting the literary needs of readers in search of books written for, by, or about people of the African Diaspora." It's a book store that every DC resident MUST visit and purchase a book from.
Located in historic Anacostia, it's one of the first shops inside the Anacostia Arts Center. The owners ran it as a successful online store and felt called to open a store in Anacostia. The owners are very friendly and set up the store well.
There are heaps of sections including one with autographed books. They have historical books, biographers, cookbooks...even a book of photographs taken of former First Lady Michelle Obama.
Even if you don't live in the neighborhood, it's a MUST VISIT in DC.
Carlos McKnight
