Reviews of Lost City Books
Lauren Hoffman
Really lovely spot for new and used books, with a couple nooks to sit and read, an extensive kids section, and those carts outside for bargain used books on nice weather days. Great selection, great atmosphere, friendly staff.
Ryo Tanaka
One of the most affordable yet alluring secondhand bookstores in the District of Columbia! The store is literally surrounded by a ton of books that offers a wide variety of genres. I am highly confident that you’ll enjoy the vibe and moderately assured that you’ll find the one that kindles your appetite for reading!!
Alexis Merritt
This bookstore is amazing - I specifically love all the detail poured into each section. They even have written 'suggestions' paired with books throughout the store, so you can get a quick review of a book that you're eyeing.
Gyongyi Olah
It is rainy outside. Pouring. I am sitting here, listen Take on me -A-HA, my youth! - and feel wonderful between magical books.
Jennifer Ramsey
Amazing place! So welcoming, staff is lovely and the content is great. Love all the LGBT friendly stuff. Definitely somewhere you’d want to hangout.
Megan Korkoleo
Spent 1.5 hours at this lovely independent bookstore searching for the perfect book to take home yesterday. 2 floors with a diverse range of genres, staff picks, used books, rare books, and merchandise. The staff are very kind and helpful.
Catherine Schepp
My favorite book store in the District! Don’t go if you are searching for a particular book - the selection is solid but sometimes they sell out of popular or older books. Go for the staff recommendations peppered throughout the entire store, the sunken room full of fantasy picks, and really friendly staff.
Jake Grubman
Does it get any better than Lost City Books? This is one of the best, most welcoming bookshops in the District, with a terrific selection, friendly and knowledgeable staff, and a generally cool atmosphere.
Lost City has both new and used books, my favorite model for a bookshop. They bring in plenty of copies of the bestsellers, but the shop is a standout for its curation, particularly in small-press literature. Head to the back wall (on the left now!) for a great range of books from publishers like New Directions, Charco Press, New York Review Books, Coffee House, Graywolf, and Deep Vellum. I'm also partial to the exceptional comic book and graphic novel selection upstairs (in the mystery, sci-fi, and fantasy nook in the back): Lost City carries an unusually strong selection of new and used comics.
And if you're after something new, the staff picks (just past the two tables of new releases on the first floor) are consistently strong and cover a hugely diverse array of interests. Eliza's picks are a personal favorite!
Mr Blue
Friendly staff and lots of interesting books (new release, graphic novels and a few rare editions). I didn't find what i was looking for but still got a few items. I'll visit again and maybe that Akira collector edition will be mine...
Emily Balyeat
I can spend hours in here looking at books. It's a beautiful book store and I appreciate all the personal notes the staff leaves on their choice of books. I hope our 18th street bookstore always stays in business it's the only one admo has ❤️
HorrorJunky 4 Life
This store has been in the Adams Morgan area for over 30 years. They sell a variety of used books for half off the price listed on the cover. Cook books, fiction like mysteries & horror, children's books and rare books are located on the first floor. Craft, science fiction and history are located on the 2nd floor. They take credit cards but I think the minimum to use them is $5. They also sell greeting cards, book marks and a few magazines and records.
Angus Bennion
It’s a well-organized local bookstore with very friendly staff.
Melissa Pugs
Stopped here on my first trip to DC. Fantastic shop. The Staff Pics cards were extremely thoughtful. I picked two books by the same shop person, and wouldn't you know that's who rang up my order, so we had a lovely chat. Would highly recommend a visit, and would love to return.
Karin E
Great cozy local book store with hidden gems! You can find some good books here and still stay in your budget. The staff is friendly and helpful.
Samantha
My favorite bookstore in the area. PLEASE order your books through them! It’s so painless and they’re so willing to help you out.
I love spending time upstairs 💘
Jay Miner
Very nice two-storey book store with a high quality selection. They have fascinating books of every variety, and even many works specific to the area such as U.S. government documents released by the Smithsonian museum.
Jessica McNutt
Wonderful book shop. Excellent atmosphere, excellent selection. I can't believe I hadn't been there before.
Anthony Carr
I love this place. Great selection of books and great staff. A must go to if you are in Adams Morgan.
Leslie Eley
Coolest book store I've ever been in. Love the little staff reviews of books tucked among the shelves.
Hanna Foreman
Great bookstore in Adams Morgan with a wide range of books to choose from in an eclectic building. The staff is always helpful and friendly. The mask policy at the store makes me feel a lot safer. Highly recommend joining the events at the store because they bring in great writers and moderators. Only gripe is that the selection on area studies books is a little limited.
Rachel McCaffrey
Such an amazing bookstore! I love the mixture of new and used and the great prices!
Jerry Liu (刘悦)
Great vibe. Great spot to check out books or sit down and chill for a bit. They play good music in the store too.
Jonathan Chan
What a great local independent bookstore.
There is a ton of books and good variety. They whole place is crammed well with books and different sections.
The kids section is in the very back. Cookbooks on the landing of the stairs. Softcover books upstairs in the back.
Lots of great personal recommendations from the staff with hand written reviews. Definitely worth stopping by. A little something for everyone. Of course they special order books if not in stock.
Overall very clean and organized. Come enjoy yourself or with a group!.
Mark Rhoades
The best book store my wife and I have ever been to. There is a huge variety of books, and the the staff picks always lead to me great books I would have looked over otherwise. We always leave with a stack of books; they also have a surprisingly large selection of Japanese authors that I haven’t found elsewhere.
pev vas
Very nicely organized Bookstore in the heart of the thriving Adams Morgan neighborhood. It has both new and gently used books and a great selection of the classics. Staff is friendly and it is a great atmosphere for book lovers to browse. It is a must stop every time I visit that neighborhood, and I don't even live in the area.
Amanda Sulejmanagic
Lost City is amazing. Excellent selection and helpful staff, and I could spend whole days perusing.
Holmes
What a great shop! I stopped by for and author talk and was very impressed. I'll be back for sure!
Manuela Tironi
This is one of my favorite bookshops in the entire world.
Blaine Frey
Beautiful little bookstore in the wonderful cultural adams Morgan neighborhood. Great price and a great catalogue of books in stock.
Ya'ara Robinzon
Cute book store. It has second hand as well but feels like a new book store. I also like all of the staff's book recommendations.
Stephanie Barrett
I always check Lost City before ordering anything online, if they don't have it in stock, they can order for you...support your local bookstore! Besides, it's just such a charming and lovely place to browse. Bonuses: lots of book club events and deep discount racks out front, plus fun and local cards, prints, etc.
Ethan Vose
This place was very well organized and probably one of my favorite book stores I've visited. They had very niche topics and categorized very specifically so everything was really easy to find. Prices weren't bad either.
Mike Powers
Super helpful staff, selection is what you expect for a local book store in the city. Lovely spot to have around the corner.
Antoinette Levon
Deceptively large Book Store. It looks small from outside but there is a second floor with rows and rows of books. It's a nice place to hunt and peck for books. They have rare books and editions of books I've never seen in print. It's not a place to just smash and grab to shop. More like a peruse and discover type place. 😁 …
Hwa Shi-Hsia
Great selection of new books mixed with used books in good condition, many vintage editions. Dedicated science fiction room. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable.
Alice Beverton-Palmer
A lovely place to browse. Loved the stickers, badges, greetings cards etc on sale too!
Helen L
Such a great local bookstore. It’s open until 9PM. They have two floors. They also have a cart outside the store that has books under $5. Definitely worth checking out. The back room is just for kids. The staff recommend great books and they are very knowledgeable. Front section of the store has cards and trinkets. They also sell merchandise!
Inna Mikhaidarova
Great bookstore with nice prices and in a neighborhood worth visiting.
If you can't find books on the shelves, be sure to check the ones on the floor.
Aaron Onuska
Really cute independent book store, good selection, and very friendly & helpful staff.
Janet Tran
Some rare content with the mix of generic liberal trendy identity politics books. Love to support local bookstores rather than Amazon. However, I requested an Aimé Césaire book which they said was on order and I would be notified when it came in but never got a notification and its been at least 3 months. The art section is lacking and not well curated.
Patrick Carey
Is there anything better than a local , independent bookstore? Incredibly friendly staff and a great selection of books (organized in very helpful categories). Highly recommend!
Brian •
I love coming here whenever I'm in the area. I always end up leaving with at least one book I've never heard of before. I highly recommend!
Lauren Nopenz Fairley
First time visiting and just loved the selection. A really inclusive, diverse, and eclectic collection while still having the big titles you may be looking for. The atmosphere is quintessential classic bookshop and I loved every inch. A must visit for any indie bookstore lover.
Paige Mathew
Awesome birthday cards, and if you bring your receipt to Andy's pizza next door you get a free slice!
Simon Lebastard
Great cosy townhouse atmosphere, an immense selection of books, including science, arts, cooking, psychology, history... I could spend hours in there and still want to come back. The staff is also really nice!
Celia Mazy
A good variety of books. Cute interior. And has a small section with priced down books.
Gus Becker
Great store! A good mix of used and new books. Lots of stock. Upstairs there is a full room of sci-fi and fantasy books! The wall of used & new sci-fi will definitely have me coming back!
Sam Cicero
Really lovely place. Used to visit before it was remodeled, and it's only improved since. It can be a bit of a challenge to find the price sometimes, but there's always fun little books to search out. I also like the odds and ends little gifts near the register; there's always some fun thing you can give someone.
Alyssa Curran
Favorite bookstore in DC. Great customer service.
Monica Wilson
Great selection. I feel like I could grab any book off the shelf and it'd be a hit. All it's missing is a store cat for the full classic book store vibe.
Kayleigh Crandell
Adorable book store that has more than meets the eye! Two floors of new and used books with a wide variety of genres. Great location and very friendly service
Benjamin Ventimiglia
Such a fun bookstore. Every inch is filled with books or some patches or pins that I was dying to stare at longer. I only stopped by for a minute but if I could I'd have stayed all day
Richmond Pajela
This place isn't like Barnes & Noble, but that's not a knock on them. They have a good selection of books, used, new, and even some really rare ones. The used books were very reasonably priced. It was quiet when I went in but it was nice to browse at my leisure and pick out the books that I wanted to purchase.
Roni Garrett
Great place to look through and stumble upon an interesting book. Not the best if you are looking for something very specific. It's a cool wander through.
Has a section for everything. Has sections on politics, shelves and shelves of books organized by region they are about. Doesn't necessarily have a great selection for anything.
Decent amount of vintage editions if you are into that.
For a small used book store it is nice and enjoyable.
matt almquist
Amazing independent book store. The owner, and employees, will help you leave with something amazing whether you knew what you wanted it or not. I have never been led astray.
Support local business, support local bookstores, and have a great time doing it.
M Delroba
I used to work in college library and I didn’t want to leave , this place keeps me bz , always something new to discover, can spend hrs in there .
Samantha Hostetler
Cute bookstore in AdMo that my friend showed me! I found a few reads I've been wanting for a really great price :)
Paul Deatley
By far the best book store in the district! Amazing book selection, friendly and helpful staff, and the character of the building ties everything together. I highly recommend you check them out!
Kye Lippold
I hadn't been here in years, but on my last visit, I really like how they rearranged the space to be more open. Excellent selection of used books, with helpful staff picks.
Lindsey Somos
Great little place, high quality staff picks and good service.
ileana Garcia-Spitz
Super nice staff. He helped me find good places to visit in the area and was very knowledgable overall.
Gabriela Reyes
Super cute and cozy place in the middle of a busy street. They had a wide range of types of books and you could also score with some of the prices :)
Tyler Marshall
Beautiful atmosphere and a selection that book lovers dream of. You can find anything you're looking for and a lot that you're not looking for too.
Henry Dotson
A fantastic bookstore that I encourage every one check out. Very friendly and helpful staff, a great selection of books. Next time you're looking for a good read, check out Lost City
David Weiding
Great bookstore in the middle of the action in AdamsMorgan. Great selection very well organized.
Seth W
Went for the re-opening. Place is large with a wide selection of books ranging from fictional novels to 1800 history. Place is designed well withstand sections dedicated to specific genres (i.e African american, LGBTQ, etc...). Place looks trendy and would be a good place to find a new book. Definitely plan on going back.
Allyza Lustig
Friendly and super responsive to email requests during COVID. They also have an incredible breadth of stock, and when they don't have something they are willing to order in. A great independent book store!
William McClure
This place is an institution in Adams-Morgan. I can't imagine the neighborhood without it. It's a bookstore for browsing and finding interesting and esoteric books. This is not Barnes & Noble with industry paid placements on shelves. It's a book lover's bookstore where you come in perhaps searching for one thing but end up finding many, other fascinating things. The owner and the staff have always been incredibly helpful with me and I have found their suggestions excellent; they never disappoint. There is a no cell phone policy, thank God, and that is because there are many rude people who can't grasp the concept that we find treasures like Idle Time as a place of sanctuary, and nobody wants to hear the conversation anyway. For people looking for authenticity this is the place. Idle Time was here before B&N and will be after.
Anna Muda
Good collection of used books and quite helpful service.
Mike Koritko
Awesome neighborhood bookstore. Great customer service, great selection. My wife’s a librarian and I own a business down the street. We both love Lost City.
lolive lolive
Great bookstore, with both new and old books. They also have a really nice selection of greeting and vintage inspired cards.
Sogand Ka
Amazing book store! With the collections of everything and anything new and old! Loved it! Great staff!
Julian Aidan
great selection of new, old & rare books + friendly staff
Catherine Foster
Lovely building, good prices on used, and a fiction selection that features both rare cuts and the pop hits of literature. Good for satisfying a whole spectrum of tastes.
Jon Sweitzer-Lamme
A really welcoming and bright bookstore. There are new books as well as used, but there are still great bargains to be found.
Brian Merrell
I want to like this place, especially as they have some titles that are otherwise difficult to obtain. The staff is pretty standoff-ish, sometimes bordering on rude; it's like a neighborhood business rule to be too cool to serve customers. Sadly, the selection is often incomplete; there will be half the volumes in a set, or random parts of a series. Less useful than I want it to be, and usually not worth the trouble.
Arjun Prasad
Neighborhood gem. So many of our long time Adams Morgan stores and restaurants have left. So grateful the new owners have decided to continue this large, well organized, used book shop.
Kayti Didriksen
I'm not much of a reader, but I love Idle time books! It inspires me every time I walk by. The quaint exterior, offers a few titles to peruse and a cozy spot to chat with friends on the street. Inside the smell of old volumes invites you to discover information the old fashioned way, and the knowledgeable staff guides you to the right stacks to take your mind on an instantaneous journey. I stop in every time I'm on 18th St. and often make a new friend.
Mx.Enigma
Inclusive, affordable, great selection and seating area to read, and a free slice of pizza next door with every purchase!
Mike Larrick
Very cool spot with a wide selection. They sell t-shirts, bags, postcards and also some books.
Josh Peters
Quaint little bookstore with a surprising variety of books. I enjoy coming here when I am in the area, and have always found books that peak my interest. The prices are priced fairly and are in good/great condition.
Christopher Woofter
Worth stopping in for a well organized used bookstore. There are a number of unique book categories. The staff are helpful and the books have a large variety of ages.

Lots of choices, thoughtfully organized, and helpful staff. Christian recommended a book for me and I ended up coming back and buying as many books from the same author as they had in stock.
