Reviews of The Book House
Shari Whay, St. Louis Realtor
I have always wanted to stop in here. Well today I was in Maplewood and I had time to stop in. Wow! There are soooo many books! I found it to be pretty well organized and was able to find the categories I was looking for. I have always loved independent bookstores and this one has new books, collectibles and tons of used books. The cookbook section was my favorite!

A nice little place to stop in for any kind of book you are looking for, they had new, used, old, and rare! Staff didn’t seem very friendly, and having a coffee station in the bathroom was a little odd, but we had a great time looking around and buying a book to take home for a keepsake of our time. Walking thru here definitely made me itch to read books more often. Would come again!

Well stocked if not over stocked store on two levels with no obvious elevator. Plenty of older titles you won't find on Amazon as well as newer stuff. It is a "downtown" location so parking is on-street and you may need to walk a bit. Inside the isles have overstock in most isles so navigation for those in wheelchairs or using walkers could be a challenge, no obvious elevator. Prices aren't out of line but current titles seem to be at full cover price. A place to go if you are looking for put of print or older titles.

Good selection and neat vibes. My only negative would be about the giant stacks of books on the floor. Makes the space tighter which is mostly fine but it also makes me feel like I'm missing out on some of their selections. A book three stacks in and towards the bottom will never be seen.

As an avid ("constant," if you read him often) Stephen King reader, I've come to suspect that there are certain places in the world that are hidden...in a special way. These places are often right in front of you, smack in the middle of Hometown, USA. I think The Book House is one of those places! I have been on a Dark Tower Series journey for over two years now, and it concluded with The Book House. I am such a weird person that I like to buy my books from second-hand book stores, and they MUST be the same publisher, dimensions, cover art, etc. I started The Dark Tower, and unbeknownst to me at the time, bought a copy that was part of a set LEAST published and MOST difficult to find...This was in Lakeland, FL in 2019...Finally, in 2022, after moving to California (LA) and scouring the territory and internet, I was able to find the last book in my lunatic search, and I found it, through a Reddit connection, who happened upon a second-hand book shop named "The Book House" while they were temporarily in St. Louis. If this little place could have such an impact on me, and me never having been there in person, imagine how it could change you if you frequent it??? Thank you to The Book House for helping continue my Stephen King jigsaw puzzle!

The Bookhouse is an amazing little independent book store that feels a bit magical inside with floor to ceiling books, and vintage volumes amongst new on the shelves. One or more cats may make an appearance as you're sifting through stacks of your favorite authors. There is a small element of chaos to the order, and some may find it better to browse than to look for a specific title, but if they can order just about anything for you if you don't mind waiting a few days.

This place is what one pictures when thinking about a bookstore that sells new and used books. I would give it 5 stars if it was a little easier to find the books you might want, precarious stacks of books are the norm, which adds to the charm, but also makes me a little nervous. The people who work here are very genuine and knock themselves out to be helpful. Of course they can order any book you want, but will also hunt for them in the store.
Being open to trying a new author is very helpful here since you are probably going to be digging through many, many books. Be sure and check out the basement for sales and children’s books. You might be able to pet a cat while you’re at it.

Coolest bookstore ever. We drove 3.5 hours and it was soo worth it.

This is the best bookstore in St. Louis, and I get lost for atleast an hour everytime I go. Such a large number of books amongst the many diverse subjects they have which is never the case at other stores, its usually one or the other. You can find cheaper used books, rare book collectors finds, and a large amount of newly released books as well new copy of older and classic-type books. I feel like hack with all my praise but this is honestly my favorite place look for books and I think stores like this need to survive as long as we can make them, so definitely just stop and get that old dusty cinematic beat-generation bookstore vibe but in a well kept, organized, tidy and friendly spot.
Glad I stumbled in there that one day however many years ago. Thanks guys, I hope to take my little nieces there someday and feed their little bookworm too.
Matthew Weld
Cool vibe, and they certainly have a lot of books! The new titles are mixed in with the used books. I didn't find any good deals, and they didn't have the breadth of offerings in the Fantasy/SciFi section I was expecting with so many books due, I think, so repeats of many titles. I'm always on the lookout for independent bookstores, and will definitely be back to support them.
albert ponciroli
Great independent book store. You want it, they most likely have it. New or used. Support the small guys so we have them in the future.

The coziest place in town to discover your next favorite book! Packed to the gills with a staggering variety of old, new, and rare books, this store boasts tons of corners to curl up and read, friendly staff, and the ability to locate nearly any book you can think of, from best sellers to rare out-of-print beauties. The staff pick shelf always has something interesting to offer, and new releases arrive almost daily. Whether you’re passing through or have lived here your whole life, this is a must-see spot!
Kip Slayback
Everyone was nice and polite. So many book options. I was looking for the Starfarers Saga by Vonda N McIntyre and they had all 4 books! Amazingly lucky find as they've been out of print for almost 20yrs.
Joshua Murphy
Cluttered, but in a charming way. Quite a few books listed as "new" are not actually new. Most books seem overpriced, considering their condition, but I'm probably just a cheapskate. Some of the staff could be considered a bit prickly and thin skinned, at least one don't seem to like children, so watch what you say around the staff and keep a close eye on your kids :-D Complaints aside, I like the place and enjoy perusing the old science fiction books. I recommend everyone check out The Book House at least once!
Joe Baumgarten
Cool spot to spend time winding your way through the stacks of books all over this shop. Great staff. If you can't find it here, it might not be a real book.
Chaney Jewell
I love this bookstore. They have a wonderful mix of new and old books. Perfect for buying gifts or adding something new to any book collector's shelf. The staff are helpful. But, best of all they have the cutest bookshop cats!
Jeremy Clark
Great book selection and environment!
The shop is worth the visit while in town. I visited from Ohio!)
Tim Sisemore
Great new and used bookshop. Nice vibe

Great location in Maplewood, and terrific inventory. Found the one book I was looking for, however the staff was not helpful and acted like it was an inconvenience to look up a book for me. Fortunately, I was persistent and found the book on my own after they told me they didn't have it, and a signed copy at that. If you just like to go and browse its a great place. 2 stories and lots of inventory and new arrivals are constant. Some beautiful cats as well.
Debra Armistead
Love this bookstore!!!!
Lots of stock and very knowledgeable staff!
Michelle knows where every book is. I don’t know how she does it.
Will order anything not in stock for you.
It reminds me of photos I’ve seen of old bookstores in England.
Recent addition of kitten siblings is a big plus!!!
Shop here exclusively!
Sierra M.
For the most part, the books were nicely arranged. They have a large selection of new and used books. There was a cute cat that lives in the store.
Danielle Zavradinos
If they don’t have it they’ll get it. Helpful staff, so many books!!
Amanda C.
Books and CATs! Doesn't get any better than that. Terrific selection of books as well.
Jon Parker
This used to be my go to bookstore in STL. The clutter lately is just getting out of hand. Too many piles of books! Still a great place.
Jana Soroski
Tons of books. Be ready to explore.
Michael Anderson
Incredible store, they were friendly and helped me find the book I was after (and then some!) the store is amazing and I could spend days there digging through the stacks for treasures.
Nicholas Thorington
Literally one of the best stocked, coolest, coziest bookstores I've been to in awhile. Bibliophiles who dream of a library wallpapered in novels, floor to ceiling, wall to wall are actually thinking of this place. Complete with huge comfy chair in the center of stacks of novels this store boasts an amazing selection from contemporary to antiquities, all genres and some actual pretty valuable and sought-after tomes as well. Smells amazing and my only complaint was that I couldn't stay longer to rifle through their catalogue thoroughly enough. Definitely on my short list of favorite stops in the St. Louis area. A book-lovers paradise.
Noah Nieder
Overwhelming but absolutely magnificent. To say there's books everywhere is an understatement there are piles upon piles and it is wonderful. Staff also seemed extremely helpful and helped me order a few books which I greatly appreciate it. Would go again.
Riley Flynn
While It will take me a bit the find the book I am looking for. The scattered, lack of organization allows me to search out me book and a majority of times I find another book that peaks my interest. While this is not a place to quickly find books this is a great business to support and if you find yourself with some extra time. Please and peruse the shelf's. I am sure you will find some great literature.
Jason Linn
Absolutely huge selection of new and used books.
Brian Armbruster, MPA Candidate
Wow. Just, wow... the best bookstore I have ever been to, and I've been to many. I have a personal library, at home. I will stop in, and pick up a few 1st additions before returning to my home state of Florida! The books are reasonably priced and well organized, by subject. In the basement or down the stairs, are couches, recliners, and a friendly cat, and walls of books. My sister and I stopped in, for a sec, and left three hours later! Beautiful place. If ever in St. Louis, MO stop by "The Book House" as it will be an experience that will not only be the best of your time but also a great way to relax with a good book, on a couch, deciding if you should purchase "the philosophy of politics" printed in 1890! 😁
Em Carey
Lovely little book store that has something for everyone

The Book House WILL be a go to for myself for years to come! Michelle was absolutely beyond stellar! Her service is top notch for any industry, and was super prompt in processing my online order. Another plus, it shipped next day and arrived a week earlier than expected😊
I purchased 2 Books from The Book House online (had actually found them on Abebooks). I found a very rare book I have personally been seeking there “Prosperity Through Thought Force” written in 1907. They had the ORIGINAL copy there in almost PERFECT condition 😯
All I can say is keep up the awesomeness and Michelle you ARE THE BEST!
Andrew
Great collection of classics and new releases. It was fun to search through the collection of children books from years past.
Elise Filka
Definitely spent hours there today, plus had a lovely conversation with two of the folks who worked there. I think that alone is worth spending the full price of a book (instead of, say... getting a deal or something on a certain online store). Plus: soooo many books! If you are in the least bit obsessed with books on a level higher than average you'll adore this place. Support your local bookstore! :)
Jeni Weidenbenner
With two floors of floor-to-ceiling stacks of books, this shop has all sorts of literary treasures. While it does take effort to browse the massive stacks, they're well sorted into categories, and the avid reader is as likely to find a recent delight as to come away with a delicious bargain. Brick-and-mortar book stores like The Book House are a gem in our community & deserve book lovers' enthusiastic support.
Amanda Felber
This place was fun to visit. There are a ton of books, including antique ones that were fun to browse through. The prices were questionable. Found a book I wanted with a sticker tag of 9.99. The cover price that was still visible, was 7.99. Most books had been written in with a price and the word "new", which makes the book not new. Cute story, just not budget friendly.
Dustin Ward
Great little book shop with a pretty wide selection. I have to admit that I'm a little bit of a bibliophile, so to me, bookshops like this are great
Hayley Clark
This is seriously one of the coolest places I've ever been. I could stay here for hours! Love the atmosphere. Wish I would have had more time to check out the old old books they have locked up in the glass cases. They look so cool!! I'll be back another day when I have more time! Definitely recommend everyone check it out at least once!
Yvette Garcia
Really torn up about The Book House now. 😭
My favorite used book store in the city. They're on the pricey end for used books, but what they have is in good condition. I enjoy the environment and spending time searching through the stacks. I've been going to this store for a few years, and always find out of print books to add to my collection or that paperback that I've been missing.
Recently, though, the store obtained a new cat. I love cats, but am awfully allergic to them. On top of that, the litter box is kept by the Sci-Fi and Literature section, my favorite part of the store. Now the entire area smells like a litter box, and it seems that the cat is fed mostly wet food and treats. This creates an awful cat bouquet that permeated the paper of the book I had been searching for. This is an unhealthy diet that increases the rate of poos, makes it liquidy, and reek to high hell. I put the book back and left for Half Price Books. 😭 Please clean the box more frequently, or swap foods, or litter, or something because I'm going to miss this store on my routine!
Isaac Cherry
This is one of my favorite book stores. It is a mom-and-pop bookstore and the people who run it are very very nice and they have a very large selection of books from all types of genres. They have an upstairs in the downstairs in a quiet area to read they also have a discounted value book been downstairs.
Jeffrey Lowe
I'm glad the Independent Book Store Day passport sent me here as I had never been! What an algebraic little spot with a ton of books! Stacks on stacks on stacks of books to peruse and find the perfect old book I never knew I needed! Go there and spend an hour looking through all the great books!
Eric Callaway
The Book House is one of the coolest locations in St. Louis. It feels like it's a library out of a movie with its ceiling high bookcases with sliding ladders and piles of books. Plus it has a huge variety so whether you are an avid or casual reader it has something for everyone.
Dawn “Sunshine” Murphy
Great cozy place for booklovers! If Michelle doesn't have a book in the store she will order it for you. Also its so much fun to look through the old books she has collected. Brings back memories!

Wonderful staff. I had so many questions about the books I was looking for and they took their time to help me out. They engaged my kids and were so friendly. The atmosphere is just great. I really hope to visit more often now that we live in Maplewood.

(Translation) An incredible bazaar! Cool prices! A real bookstore worthy of the name. We may not find there what we came for but we will surely leave with two or three essential books that we did not know existed....
(Original)
Un bazar incroyable ! Des prix sympas! Une vraie bouquinerie digne de ce nom. On y trouvera peut-être pas ce qu'on est venu chercher mais on repartira surement avec deux ou trois livres indispensables et dont on ignorait l'existence....
