Reviews of Changing Hands Bookstore
AZ Kimba
This was our first time out to this location. We usually go to the Tempe store. The employees here were friendly and helpful. The shelves are clearly marked to help you locate items. You can also put a book title in the search on their website to check availability or you can walk to the back of the store and ask an employee to check to see if they have a particular book in stock. They have a children's section, a small coffee shop, and many unique gifts.
Lisa Taneo
Beautiful store and great selection. I love the smell of the flowers. I still prefer the one in Chandler because it's got easier parking and takes 40 books at a time. This place only takes 15 at a time for trade in. Still nice people can't speak for the bar though.
Justin Hepler
One of the coolest stores in town. If having a drink, reading or getting work done and going to poetry nights or meeting authors are your jam then this is your place. Tone of books, peaceful vibes and lots of room for creativity and connection.

So I've been on the hunt for the perfect weekend spot to chill, relax, study & read for months now.
I've tried many coffee shops, Barnes & Nobles, and libraries, but I was never 100% comfortable. Most of those places that I tried were either too loud, too crowded or just didn't have that chill vibe. Ya know?
Luckily I finally walked into this place today and I felt at ease almost immediately. They have super cute & funny socks, coasters, bags, and other little gifts right as you walk in.
Plus, It's not too crowded at all, they have a BOOKSTORE, a BAR, nice comfy chairs & tables where you can READ, study, or do some laptop workin'. 😀
The people seem really cool! (One lady in the back by the books seemed a bit annoyed after I asked her a question...but other than that this place is so cozy) And I love the indie vibe.
This may be my new favorite place to come on the weekends :)

Absolutely LOVED this place!! There were so many interesting things and books, the layout of the store was really nice, and the coffee bar was a perfect added touch
msbusyblonde
After years of hearing about this place I finally made it. Amazing! You would think all book stores are similar but I loved the way things were organized. I loved the "remarkable reads" and "employee picks" signs. So many trinkets and gifts that I'll definitely return when needing a fun gift for someone. The coffee shop/ bar is large and spacious. These two places together mean I could spend all day here!
Jamie Figueroa
I love the book store!! Their selections are plenty and I love the staff recommendations. They have a cute cafe/bar area and the staff is friendly, easy going, and willing to help.
Hannah
Absolutely impressed with this bookstore! Such a beautiful and welcoming atmosphere with friendly staff and a wide selection of books and other little knickknacks. I will certainly be back!
Nicole Rodriguez
Staff is just "eh". Used to be a super friendly group of people working the front and back desk but that hasn't been the case for some time now. Great selection of books and even a good selection of games and puzzles. It's a great space for just chilling or hanging out with a friend. They have a cool bar and they have non-alcoholic choices as well.
Christine Anderson
This place is comfort, nostalgia, and hope in a place. There's nothing more warm and welcoming than a book store. Nothing takes you back like seeing books you took journeys with. Nothing is more hopeful than the new worlds that await. Add in local goods and a coffee/booze bar. Hello, yes please! Will be back! With friends.
Breanna VanDenBerg
Absolutely love this book store! Lovely staff, a wonderful selection of books and other fun goods, and values that align with mine. I love how outspoken they are about equality and human rights. I’m always happy to support them!
Akshat Kumar
Amazing place, good selection of books and everything literary, I bought a couple of books and a cool Frida Kahlo magnet for my friend(who had recommended the bookstore to me when I was in Phoenix). They’ve a bar and a seating area where you can eat/chill. There are a lot of parking spaces outside where you can park(for free).
I spent little over an hour perusing the bookstore. Support independent bookstores, visit this place! I’ll be back here again.

What a wonderful shop and diverse selections. My partner and I were thrilled to see AZ Save Our Schools campaign available for petition signatures. We love a bookstore that is active in promoting policies to fully fund our schools!

What every book u are looking for you will differently find it there!!. If they don’t have the book, they can order it for you. Go check out this amazing bookstore.

Great bike ranks. Ride your bike here. 7th Ave is a great bikeroute. Good place to sit, read, drink a beer, study.
The bar has a slanted end so you can read ergonomically. Its awesome. Just don't set your beer on the slanted end.
Trevor Hyatt
A really cool bookstore. Almost every book that I browsed was super intriguing. The store is very cool with a very peaceful bookstore vibe. The added bar and coffee shop inside is an extra plus. I thought it’s like Barnes and nobles on steroids. Good prices on books as well.
Jenna Vanderhulst
I love changing hands! My first time visiting the Phoenix location was earlier this month, and it was lovely. I've been going to the Tempe one for years, and was so excited to see what the hype was about with the Phoenix location! Both are awesome:)
Camille Vinogradov
This trip to Phoenix was my first time in Changing Hands Bookstores but it won’t certainly be my last!! I consider myself an independent bookstore conniseur and this is by far the best bookstore I’ve ever been in. It has a wonderful selection of books of all different genres as well as gifts for everyone—stickers, cards, chocolates, candles, etc
Tony Felice
I met Cindy Dach so long ago that she'd be mad if I said how long. LOL. I was impressed with her work to revitalize Downtown Phoenix and her commitment to the arts, and economic development with an emphasis on local and independent and community. Changing Hands has grown to become an impressive jewel for Arizona. Thanks to Cindy and her team Arizona is not a fly over state for the top writers and publishers in the country. They come HERE to have book signings and other events including all the top names: King, Oprah, Rowlings, and so many others. She has created a space where people can rise to their best selves and it has had a ripple effect on our community. How fun to run into friends at Changing Hands and feel connected to something bigger than us and good.
Rebecca Hubbard (Beckatherecka36)
I love this bookstore. There is a beer garden, cute trinkets, and tons of books to choose from. Plus it's local!
Rikki Heyman
Must visit! Cool gifts, great book selection, knowledgeable and kind book sellers and staff, beer and coffee options to die for and a safe inclusive environment and vibe!
Carol Gibson
Excellent independent bookstore! They also have fascinating and unusual assortment of other gift ideas for the kitchen, your car, stationery, and pretty much whatever you can imagine! A great assortment of greeting cards, and there's a coffee bar that has snacks, wine and other beverages. They often bring in authors and artists to give talks and demonstrations. Classes are also available in many different areas such as writing or crafting.
Angel Lozada
Great bookstore located in uptown Phoenix. Purchased two books today. They have a good selection of books& they have a coffee/wine/beer bar as well. Located on the west side if the bookstore they have a nice quite area.
Lisa Daitoku
The best bookstore in Phoenix. They have such a nice curated selection of books. Great place to wander and get lots in the titles. Attached to first draft when you can grab a glass of natural wine and read a while. Love it.
Steven Williams
Great book store with great service plus a beer bar to top it off. Good book selection. Recommended.
Kymberlyn Reed
A bookstore and a bar. What could possibly be better than that? This is a unique bookstore with a pretty good selection of titles and unique gifts (though they're really going to have to work on carrying more PoC authors in their science-fiction/fantasy and YA sections. Seriously no Nisi Shawl or Nnedi Okorafor or Tannarive Due😮). Still, as a huge bibliophile, I could easily spend hours browsing with a glass of wine.
Mayra Lomba
I’ve been to the Phoenix location twice already and I absolutely love this bookstore, as well as the First Draft Book Bar! They have a great selection of books and great merchandise for gift ideas. The staff is so helpful and very friendly. I found my new favorite place to hang out at on the weekends.
Ivan Racic
Urban iconic ambiance with many books, knickknacks, and chocolates! I really love the cafe area which is used for book presentations from time to time.... I only wish it has a little bit of something for conservative folks too....like myself 🤪 …
Carrie Powell
One of the few bookstores in Central Phoenix that has a mix of new and used books. The staff privides good recommendations, and you can browse or have a drink...coffee, tea or adult beverages.
Sarah Groh
📚🍻The cutest little bookstore with a bar and adorable little touches. If you want to shop for a good book and drink then this is your place. …
Niki1665
Always a favorite spot! I never leave without at least one unexpected pick and a chocolate carmel at the register. Love both locations for kids’ books and gifts!
Rachel Ewell
Gem of a bookstore. So many awesome recommendations from the team that works here - I wanted to take 20 books home but managed to limit myself to 2. Wonderful spot to spend an hour or three.
Tanisha
One of my favorite bookstores. Great books and great vibes. My fiance and I love how diversity is celebrated here ALL the time (not just during certain special days or months of the year)!
Khadijah Bah
I love changing hands! This quaint little bookshop is one of the cutest places to spend time in central Phoenix and they have a coffee bar inside. The staff is wonderful, but I would like to particularly shout out Bee for being so lovely, kind, patient, and understand! Bee you are amazing!!
Kortni Wise
Fun bookstore with great options. New and used books and lots of fun trinkets to buy. I’ll be back.
Steven Sible
Love this place for books and gifts; young and old. And the staff is always very friendly and helpful
Jordan Love
What an gem! Just here visiting family and Phoenix and I am SO GLAD I stumbled upon this place. I immediately felt welcomed and at home. First Draft is a great place to work or read over a yummy latté or craft brew, or you can pick up a few books for your collection at Changing Hands. The employees are WITHOUT EXCEPTION friendly and knowledgeable. I am sad to be leaving Phoenix... I wish I could take this place with me back home!
Matt Beres
This bookstore is really unexpectedly cool!! Visited on 1/15/2022. Much larger than it seems passing by. It's actually more of a literary enthusiast's candy store! Very clean, nice atmosphere, with friendly, helpful staff and a large selection of books of all types and genre. Also children's books and learning-based games. There is a meeting room and also tables where writers can enjoy the atmosphere amongst like minded artists. There's even a cool little bar within the place where coffee based drinks or a cold beer can be enjoyed. Very reasonable prices too! We will definitely be coming back here again! Check it out!
Luz Rodriguez
This place is great. It has a calm atmosphere and cool to walk around in. It has a little bit of everything one looks for and is spacious. Things can be really pricey though but when you buy something there you’re guaranteed to be happy with your purchase. Your bank account maybe not so much. I always check out the books in the back left corner because some are marked with a color dot sticker and those are usually discounted a lot! I got this book for $12!
Mckenna Pabbruwee
Always an amazing time here. They have unique books and gotta love being able to drink a beer while you browse. They have a stamp card also which is enticing. If they don’t have the book I. Store, it can be ordered quickly as well.
Patrick O'Leary
Great vibe independent bookstore. Bar | coffee shop as well.
Angela Barbosa
I love this bookstore so much! I've visited on two different trips to Phoenix, and it's now a destination stop whenever I'm in town. The store is beautiful and has a huge, well-organized selection of books and quite a nice assortment of gift items (jewelry, local/desert pieces, games & puzzles, and lots of fun stuff). It also has a truly fabulous beer/wine & coffee bar (seriously, one of the best I've seen) with a small (delicious) food menu.
Geo Roarke
I always love this place, one of the best bookstores I've been to. Not only so many good selections of books, but also they serve coffee/tea. And especially the best part about going there is beer. They have many good beers on tap, and even if nothing you like, they have some in cans in the fridge you can look at. Also, of course, good selections of white and red wine. It's just a perfect place to relax, read a book, and have a pint of beer. Great staff, they're always friendly.
Bryn K. DeFusco
Outstanding local bookstore that supports the community! Wonderful service & excellent selection of books. Highly recommend!
Laurel Carraway
Our favorite local bookstore! Excellent selection of books, gifts and other treasures - it's tough to leave without more than you intended! Great location with easy parking - a favorite to frequent for sure!
Jennifer Neilssen
The store has a welcoming setup with a cozy bar and a comfortable sitting/working area. They also provide many opportunities for book club and author forums. I gave it four stars because the prices were a little high compared for other book exchange venues.
Margo Johnson
We were there about a week ago after a long covid hiatus. They no longer carry magazines, which is disappointing. I love reading foreign periodicals just to see what others are doing around the world. Hope they return to the shelves. My son always finds a large number of books, too. He's an avid reader and Changing Hands seems to be on the same wave length. Oh, and they still offer their punch cards, rewarding your purchases. Get your card started, too.
Sam Herrington
One of my all-time favorite independent bookstores in the states. Whenever I visit Changing Hands, which is as often as possible, I find so many books I have to purchase (like all my recent ones)! I’ll go in for one in particular and end up going home with at least two more. I love that there are so many books to choose from, no matter what you’re interested in genre-wise.
Do yourself a favor and start a stamp card. I’ve been through several of them(and currently have two full ones!), and you can save $10 on a purchase with each full card you have with you. A great way to support a local business and save some cash each time you visit!
Rowing Stones
Changing Hands always has the bestsellers and some of the harder to find books, too. On top of this, the bookstore has food and beverages nearby if you have a cranky or "hangry" child with you. In addition, they carry great gift items (desert items, gag gifts, some toys, mugs, puzzles, and more). I like to buy a book and an additional gift for each person in my family for the holidays. They always have what I need.
Sydney Warner
I loved this bookstore! They have an amazing selection of books and unique gifts! I had trouble deciding what to get! The staff were wonderful and the bar inside is a great way to finish off the evening!
Agnieszka Westfal
A bookstore AND A BAR?? Yes, please! My happy place. Support your local bookstore!
Ken P
Cool little beer and wine place inside a cool little bookstore.
Everyone was really friendly.
Cristalle Dia McManus
I'm in love with this place. It has books, gifts and a bar.
Rafael Soto
A neighborhood treasure! Excellent bookstore with a matching ambience and amenities.
John Berkheimer
Great place to grab some Free WiF ans a beer or coffee. Great dip coffee.
C Brant
Love this store. So many artist products and cool finds!
Arienne Fulton
Listed as one of the best bookstores in AZ so I had to go!
RLG
Amazing book selection, fun gifts, and a cute bar inside. Definitely something for everyone. Sale books are often little nuggets, so dig through and you might find one!
elgreco50
Cool-hip place with new and discounted books. Nice bar and coffee bar, "commons" room with easy chairs and a fireplace, helpful and perky young staff. A little cleaner and neater than we usually like in a used book store, but all in all a nice place!
Germaine K
Lovely local bookstore in Uptown Phoenix! Great selection of books and cute gifts. First Draft book bar (located inside) is also a must-visit!
Antonio Espree-Bey
Huge selection of books. Here at this location you'll find friendly people and locals that enjoy books, conversation, and good company.
Rhyan Geiger
Tons of great books and vegan cookbooks too 👀 …
Marlaleta Pehoviack
Great place to explore new reading material. Novelty items are unique.
Kelly Marin
Wow this indie bookstore was amazing. We are always looking for a great bookshop when we travel. We really enjoy supporting small businesses even when we are on the road. We stopped in and spent an hour browsing the books and making our selection. There are benches throughout to look at books. They have a great selection. There is surely something for everyone. They also have puzzles, games and Arizona themed gifts. It’s super important to pay a few dollars more to keep places like this in business you will not regret visiting and spending your money here!
Hira Ismail
Loveeeee the vibes and the books and the quirky gifts and chocolates
Alexander Lesher
One of my favorite book environments in the country! Lots of great reads mostly focused on recent releases really good stuff oh yeah
Dominique Ramirez
I could spend hours here. There is a great assortment of books and novelties. I always find great gift ideas as I peruse the aisles. It's the first bookstore I've ever been to that has its own bar!
Jeane Walker
Great little bookstore! Both new and used books available. Excellent service, with knowledgeable help finding just the right books for my cousin. Friendly! Kind! A bit crowded with small aisles if you’re limiting COVID exposure. Otherwise an excellent place to explore.
Jeremy Lesser
The best bookstore in the Valley! I love coming here. The vibes are good, people are cool, the food and drinks are awesome, and it’s in a good location. All in all, you need to come here on your Phoenix journey! I will come here again and again.
Sandy Christiano
Great vibe! Eclectic collections. Great book selections and the fireplace rocks!
Star McC
Clean and tidy but not a huge selection of books. Cute little cafe/bar in the back with geat food and drinks.
Amira de la Garza
The books and gift items they stick well keep a book lover in heaven for hours, and the bar is a great place to cool down and look through the books you just bought. I love this store.
Robert Day
Great place. Bought some unique Christmas presents.
Terry Carter
I love this place!! So cool! There's a nice Bar! Such a cool place to hang out. Great book selection.
G M
Part of a shopping center with a shared parking lot that has ample spaces. Some street parking available when necessary. Takes cash and card, pre-orders, and special orders. Okay, now to the good stuff...I've been stopping in here almost every Saturday for a few weeks now and I have no plans to let up. The feel of the place is just perfect, offering up a vast array of books, gifts, trinkets, and journal/sketchbooks/etc. for anyone in any situation. They also show off the staff's passion for reading, with employee recommendations accompanied by entertaining and helpful descriptions of not only thr pages within, but why they are so drawn to them. The only thing that could make this place better is a dope bar and event space to support readers, which they absolutely have in First Draft! I could not recommend this place enough, and if you are shopping elsewhere I highly recommend you give Changing Hands a shot. I guarantee you will not be disappointed!
Benjamin Myers
Best book store
Edit: 5/5 + 1 because they replied to this review
W Pendarvis
You could spend hours just looking at STUFF... and that's not counting the books! ...and a great place to hang out with a good friend.
Beth Maloney
Best book store! Love the vibe, the selection and the bar!
Juliette Roeder
This is a great spot! It’s full of books so of course it’s full of magick, although I do wish that the Music Biography section was larger. Regardless, this local gem of a bookstore has a good selection of Fiction/Horror/Romance options to choose from and the inventory seems to pair a lot with the GoodReads phone app which is very helpful when looking for new works! The coffee and wine bar, the original stone fireplace, and the various little items for sale in the store are added bonuses.
Ivy Koberlein
I've visited a lot of independent bookstores around the country and this is my favorite! They have an impeccably organized selection of new and used books. The used books are practically brand new and are sold at about half price, $8.50, in beautiful condition. They have a nice children's and young adult section as well as science, philosophy, local, cookbooks, you name it, they have it! And the trinkets selection is beautiful, as well. I wish this was local for me.
Thomas Andrews
Exceptional bookstore and coffee bar. Their selection of volumes varies widely, but is also intentional. My favorite feature of the store is their personalized recommendation placards that they put on staff favorites. Probably the best bookstore in the valley.
David Thibault
The girlfriend asked me to take her here one day, and I regret that decision. Not only does she love the selection of books, the quality of gifts and cards, and the sheer amount of jigsaw puzzles that no store that sells books should reasonably have, but it has a pint beer for $4 that I can enjoy while waiting for her. Coming to Changing Hands was one of the worst mistakes I've made. You should make that mistake too.
Christiane Dow Freer-Parsons
I love to read and support bookstores especially locally owned independent stores. Changing Hands is a wonderful place! They carry a broad inventory of books and other publications, the staff are smart, helpful, and courteous, and they support their community! They will graciously search for books for patrons if the item is not in stock. They carry non-book materials as well so one can find a great variety of gifts. The online store is easy to negotiate and makes it safer to shop during the pandemic. The two locations have adequate parking with some limit at the Phoenix store but I've never had problems. Read! Think! Know! and utilize a super community resource such as Changing Hands Bookstore!
Rebecca Brinkman
A beautiful place with great book selections! Super friendly and good treats!
Ynna Mendoza
Some of the booksellers wear a shirt that says "My Happy Place" but that doesn't do this place enough justice. This is "my escape from the world" or "this is my heaven, my nirvana, my dream". From an amazing selection of books, to the friendliest and coziest bar, to finally an actual fireplace. Without hesitation, I can say that Changing hands and First Draft is my favorite place in Phoenix.
Moises __
Amazing bookstore! Great vibes, very up to date on social issues. Nice merchandising and clean store. Interesting selection of non book merchandise. Very friendly staff. Didn't get to try out the bar side. But there IS a bar side! So cool! Loved their LGBTQIA+ section.
Alejandro Perez
Very cool bookstore with a good selection and a fun and eclectic style. The staff is friendly and helpful and the sections are clearly identified. They have a huge selection of kid's books and every section of the store has great employee recommendations. The bar area was closed due to Covid, but they have a bar area in the bookstore! Very fun and very cool, plus you get to support an independent bookstore.
Mollie McCurdy
I shop here at least monthly, the selection is incredible, the business is well organized and I always discover something new and fun each time! The bar is an excellent addition for those who are looking for a treat while they shop. I've spent countless hours here roaming the book aisles, picking jigsaw puzzles, and buying small gifts for friends and family. Highly recommend stopping by this lovely local establishment.
Robert Munguia
Its everything you need all in one place. I mean everything and a glass of wine. Its also a community events location so can see what events they will be hosting
Camille Goralski
This is the best place in town to go hang out and have a shark hooter report... hahaha I meant charcuterie...haha
Matt
Nice place something u hadn't done before 👌👌 …

kevin cousins
If you love bookstores like I love bookstores this is your place. They've got books for all ages and interests. They've got toys, gifts, stuffed animals and candy as well. There's also a nice bar with a great selection of drinks.
evie_chaan
This store was so cute! Support your local independent bookstores! Lots of new and slightly used books. They will look at books for store credit, 15 books per person. For an independent store they still have a great selection, including childrens books, and are directly connected to a bar/lounge where you can order a drink and food and sit down. Loved the recommendations that were easy to find on the shelves. Felt very homey and was peaceful :)
Great way to buy books locally, you womt leave without something.
Vishara Bro
I loved everything about this place...even the books an fun accessories
Volt9Charge
Helpful staff and friendly bar team. Enjoyed my first visit and will be going back.

Called ahead to find out if they had an atlas. They said they did. I should have been more specific about what I wanted. I was looking for a big travel atlas to take on a road trip. When I found the one rotating rack with maps, the only atlas I found was a small one that would fit in the glove box. I went up to the counter and asked if the big atlases were somewhere else in the store. The worker said no. What I had found was it. I ended up having to go to Half Price Books to find an atlas. My friend had some Changing Hands store credit, so we picked out some stickers while we were there. Stickers were pricey, but super cute. Store is cute too, with books and lots of gifts (but not a big atlas when I needed one).
Natasha Dahlberg
Best bookstore, hands down! It's local, supports its community, has so many wonderful nick knacks and random must haves, plus partners with First Draft book bar where you can sit down and enjoy your new book and have a craft beer or glass of wine! It's truly amazing!
Andrew Becker
Very nice and unique bookstore and just a great place to spend the afternoon. If you haven't been it's definitely worth checking it out!
Terrell Thomas
This is an awesome bookstore. Staff is amazing, the selection is great, they will buy used books and there is a bar!
Sean Tingle
We always have a wonderful time at Changing Hands or First Draft. The selection is excellent - used books, new books, random gifts, you name it. The layout of the store is also well thought out and fun. It's great to wander around, looking at all the cool stuff with a drink in hand (alcoholic or otherwise). It's basically the perfect local bookstore, and they also happen to host lots of great local events. They even support local authors. Recently, they started selling my friend's book, and they hosted a book reading and signing for her here. The employees are also always amazing, friendly, and helpful.

Omg this is my favorite location!!
This place is beyond adorable and has very unique items that are hard to find. I love the variety and how easy things are to find. I love the gaming section and the cute cards. Also have adorable jewelry and trinkets that are unique.
The staff was very nice and helpful. I love their knowledge of things and how accommodating they were.
Also has a cute cafe inside that was hosting what I think was a poetry slam? I don't know, but it was great environment.
Felt very welcomed and definitely plan to go back in the future!
Shelly L
Love the atmosphere and the variety of books. The staff is super friendly and they have a great place to get coffee and pastries.
Liz Lang
This place has a fantastic vibe. Soothing, quaint with a decent selection. I found what I was looking and after my purchase, I sat at the bar and read. They have a fireplace, beer, wine and snacks. Can't go wrong here.
Parker
Great local bookstore with a wine/beer bar.
Ivanka “Sophia” Davies
Such calm, lo-fi bookstore and coffee shop vibes
Ivan Martinez Morales
Super eclectic bookstore with a wide selection of books! I love coming here and just cracking open a good book, putting my phone down for a little while and reading something new. They're local too, so every dollar you spend here helps empower the local community and keeps our dollars in this neighborhood. The staff are always super helpful in helping you find whatever it is that you're looking for. If you're into knicknacks, they also have a wide array of those too.
John Schieffer
Awesome place to spend some time. A Bookstore and coffee/beer & wine bar is a great combination. I always try to make it to the Drink and Draw nights. A clothed model is provided and it is only $10 a person. I haven't been to the restaurants next door but they look tempting and dining outside looks great with the fireplace and heaters for cooler temperatures.
My daughter is in 3rd grade and was able to get a bunch a books in this bookstore for very low prices. When it comes to kids books and young readers a person could go through many, many books. Cheaper is better. This is not a musty, smelly book place. Everything is organized and the books all look like new.
Danielle Wilson
This isn’t only my favorite place to get books, it is also one of my favorite activities to do with my kids, and one of my favorite place to shop for unique and awesome presents.
I love the kids story time and it isn’t as busy as tempe. This spot also makes a great date night with the attached first draft bar, it is really a trendy and neat spot.
Bathrooms are clean, staff is super helpful. Store was well organized and I had no problem finding what I needed.
Laura Mikkola
I love this bookstore and have been going for years. Great selection, great staff, and I love the fact I can drink a glass of wine while browsing! I didn't know I could like this place more, but last night the staff really went above and beyond. My car battery died while I was in the store. The bar manager (I'm sorry I never got her name) loaned her jumper cables, and a staff member (Jeffrey) came out to jump my car. Thank you times a million 😊

This is one of my happy places. It's a great bookstore, with both new and used books, but it also has a nice little coffee and beer/wine bar in it with some food options as well. What more could you want? They also hold events here. This is simply a great space. I love coming here to browse books, grab a beer, and/or write.
Ashley Mae Morris
Love this small business. Amazing book recommendations. Fun gifts. A bar with A fireplace and a local artist has an installation in it. Champagne by the fireplace with your recent book purchase, all the stars.
If you're crowd wary during covid, you can still support this small bookseller by buying online.
Stephanie Erickson
A gem of a place here in Phoenix. A lovely place to gather with friends at the book bar... or for quiet alone time meandering the book store, or relaxing by the fireplace with a latte. The Book Bar even has great Gluten Free pastries, muffins, donuts and the like.
A Jerome
A quiet place to hang out, get a coffee, find some new reads or get some fun knick knacks
John Forsythe
Good selection of books from kids to adults. Beers on tap are unique and the bar area has a fireplace. Fun place to visit
Timothy Bee
Loved visiting this location. I spent extra because of the friendly and helpful staff. This location is smaller than the other one, but it has a lot packed in there.
I loved how organized and modern it feels. I actually thought I had arrived before it opened because it looked dark when I pulled in. It’s a beautiful, cool respite from the blinding Phoenix summer.
Inside there is a bar and cafe. There is a community centered feel to the place. It has staff recommendations and signed copies of some releases. I heard conversation, lots of it. People talked about what they were reading and the latest article about topic X or Y. Books weren’t just stacked and piled, they were arranged and sorted. It was easy to find a book I wanted and then three more that were similar.
This will definitely be a must stop when I venture through Phoenix.

A really nice bookstore with large selection. The ambience in the shop is wonderful. There are two meeting rooms on-site as well as a bar where you can get coffee, other drinks and a small menu of food items. There is a large common area for meetups or just hanging out to work on your computer. Staff were extremely helpful and very friendly.
Nate Wooding
I would think a store with this name would have more used books, but their stock is mainly new books. Nice cafe area and stuff though
Nicole Wehner
Best bookstore ever. Lots of options for your next read and they have the best coffee!
Ben Chan
I come here every now and then and always have a blast wandering though the store. They have all kinds of unique toys and gadgets. They also sell books and have a bar with separate seating area to grab a glass of wine or beer. It's a great place to take a friend or a date before (or after) having dinner next door at Southern Rail.
John Vasholz
Favorite local book store in Phoenix. Friendly staff and great selection. What puts it over the top for me is bar/cafe :) great space. If I buy a physical book 9/10 it is from here :)
Ray Mott
The best bookstore in Arizona. Has plenty of unique gifts to spice up your visit. The adjoining First Draft offers a nice relaxing area to read, write, study with a drink and pastry of your choosing. Get there and enjoy your day.
C Hardin
This unique bookstore has a wonderful selection and great atmosphere. I love both the Tempe and Phoenix locations. I also appreciate their generosity toward a charity my sons and I support. They also have many interesting and fun events worth checking out. All in all, one of my favorite places.
Brian Gorrila Detailing
Daughter needed a rare old book for a school project. After looking at 2 or 3 other stores that didnt have it,Changing hands had it. She was able to complete her assignment on time and read a cool old book as well. She commented after going in how cool the store was and she wanted to go back soon ,thank you!
Zi Why
The store has a mix of new and used books. The prices are fair, but the atmosphere is really cool - the store includes a bar and some meeting rooms that can be reserved. There are many other places within walking distance that are fairly interesting as well.
Sean Quigley
Great local book shop. Love the atmosphere and they have a great selection. They also have a wine and coffee bar inside the store! Who doesn't like to drink and shop?!? Added bonus, you are supporting an amazing local business! Definitely worth a stop in!
Cindy Martinez
Such unique items. A little pricey.
Tammy Sippola
Our favorite local bookstore. Creative community events, amazing selection of a variety of books, entertaining children’s area with a handful of local authors to choose from. They also have a wine bar inside the store, you can walk around with a drink and go shopping- a truly unique experience!
Ann Staudinger Knoll
Always a pleasure! Great finds, and the little cafe/bar in the back is perfect for meeting with a friend or reading a new found book.
Alice Steinke
Best independent book store by far! So glad they expanded to Phoenix. Great selection, book club with discounts and many author signings and visits every week. Especially love the First Draft bar- how unique in a bookstore. When I want something special I buy here and not at that online place. Oh-great and unusual gifts too! Thanks for making our part of Phoenix more sociable and woke!
Tara D La O Garcia
As a teacher and a parent, I love this store! They offer 10% off for educators (even on their used books). Also, they "purchase" used books for store credit. They are extremely supportive of #RedforEd and education, in general. They have a fabulous summer reading program for kids which provides tattoos, treats, and a $5 gift card to the store after reading 10 books. AND, they also have a lovely wine bar with food, baked treats, and a happy hour! LOVE THIS
PLACE!!!
Sarah Rodgers
Went for the Harry Potter event and have been for the last three years. It's a wonderful place. Drinks are good and the staff is always friendly and willing to help if you need a certain something. They go all out for their events and great for the family.
Michelle Reed
There is a restaurant and garden store in the complex the blends it's way beautifully with the bookstore. Wonderful selection like tempe but.....there a bar inside the bookstore with really good brews. Truly encompasses this book and brew lovers escape space. Plus they have Harry Potter adult parties. Just heaven
Sarah Montuori
I love this Indie Bookstore. This is my one-stop shop for local and unique gifts. The store is always clean and cozy. They have some great events here as well. A great community based hang-out for book lovers.
Jacob Wells
Such a fun store! My wife and I stopped by just to see it, and we love it. Great selection of books both used and new, and some rare finds as well! I’m big on history books, and this book store has a good selection, much better than big chain book stores.
J Whitley
A very good place to get a drink and snack and read a while. Very courteous staff.
Ty Viliborghi
Good bookstore. Great staff. Bar is fantastic.
They always have a good beer selection. The pie of the day hasn't missed yet.
It's a fantastic space to meet a friend or get a little work down with a beer.
Joe Previte
The coffeeshop in here is amazing! I love the atmosphere. Note due to the pandemic, you can only be there for 2 hours at a time. Great place to read a book or get some work done.
Brynn Murray
This is a fantastic bookstore with an amazing aesthetic. You can find everything from children's books to book on forgotten history and everything in between. They also have First Draft, an in-house bar with delicious literary brews and pun-filled sandwiches. They also host authors like Joseph Fink who published The Welcome To Night Vale Novel for talks and signings, and other literary events! I highly recommend a visit!
Kiara R
This book store was AMAZING. The store was very nice and there was a huuge selection of new and used books from every genre. There was also a little area for the kiddos to play. The staff was extremely friendly. There is also a cafe/bar on the far side of the bookstore. There are plenty of events going on that are great for kids and adults.
Valerie Voll
I placed an order online for a Mother's Day care package for the "Book Lover". Wow, Changing Hands did such an awesome job! Every item they picked was high quality, relevant and loved by the recipient. And I really appreciate that they called and emailed me several times to remind me of the store's abbreviated hours and to ensure I would pick up my gift in time for Mother's Day. Wonderful experience!
Emily McPherson
Ordered books online for curbside pickup during store closure due to COVID-19. My order was filled within an hour, and the pick-up instructions were easy to follow. The whole process was a wonderful experience! Instead of ordering books from massive online sellers, you should support this local gem and get what you want THE SAME DAY (without a plastic bag or cardboard packaging!) all while feeling safe and AWESOME! The staff member who delivered the books to my car was wearing a mask and gloves and he definitely respected our space. Thank you for making my day, Changing Hands!
W. Skyler Jarc
Awesome little bookstore! Got some good finds there. A lot of neat little knick knacks and the coffee is very good as well.
Kiley Simon
This place is a super cool find. They have a great collection of new and used books, great sentimental gifts, funny Knick knacks, a bar, and consistently host fun special events. A great place to take the kids to find a new book or to grab a beer at happy hour.
Shy Ingersoll
Keeping it local! This bookstore is huge and houses a variety of books and gifts. They even have a bar inside that's makes for a very friendly atmosphere.
Vicky Alvarado
Every time we go visit a new city, we like to shop at a local bookstore. We absolutely loved this one. Had a coffee / cocktail bar. Amazing selection of books at very reasonable price. Great gem in Phoenix.
Amber Enriquez
I absolutely love this place. The books are typically full price, but this local place that brings to the community, is worth paying full price. They also have nice trinkets and gifts. Can't go wrong.
Nobody M
One of my favorite bookstore. They have a great selection of books and other items. The staff is amazing and knowledgeable. The store is clean and has a great atmosphere.
Elizabeth Wilcox
Not the best selection of books, but a very cool atmosphere, made even better by the presence of First Draft. Seriously, sitting down to read in a bar in a bookstore? It doesn't get much better than that! They also have a stamp card, so every $10 you spend you get a stamp, and when you've spent $100, you get $10 off your next purchase. Definitely worth stopping by.
Sarah Boggan
Local bookstores are a treasure and Changing Hands is definitely one. Great selection, helpful staff and a fun variety of gift items too. I could spend all day browsing the shelves. Also a nice place to trade in used books for credit.
Asher Benjamin
This is a really nice little bookstore and bar combo. This place feels warm and inviting. The staff where friendly to me and my friends. We came in expecting something cool and we weren't disappointed. We will be coming back here in the future hopefully frequently!
Peter B
Very cute bookstore with more than just books. Along with an above average coffee shop attached the store offers a variety of novelty items that are creative and make for fun gifts or decorations around the house. There is a restaurant and very nice little garden store connected to the bookshop.
Rachael H
This is a hip, little bookshop/coffee hangout. I liked the atmosphere, but I also would have liked having more to look at. I was able to circle the bookshop pretty quickly. I did find two books tho in their clearance section. The staff didn't really ask if I needed help, which I don't mind, but they didn't even say hi. It was still pretty cool and I would go back if I lived in the area.
Z W
I love the feel of this place, with a bar and cafe in the bookstore. Prices are good and the environment is conducive for book reading and relaxing and discovery
Rose Zytnik
Such a lovely community place to read, shop, eat and relax.
Sydney Logan
I am in a place where I am not able to go into stores like normal people are right now. I called and shared this with the store owners, hoping that there may be a way to come see this store with my sister, who’s been wanting to take me. One of the Owner/Managers there, (Cindy) was exceedingly kind and helpful to me. During this mess, things can be scary. She chose to see past both our fears and create a safe space where I could shop with my sister. This is the best place and it was an incredible experience. Thank you Cindy, and Jen, the woman who was there to have the bookstore open early just for us. I hope to continue Changing Hands.
Karen
This is so much more than just a book store.
Joel Fry
Fantastic independent bookstore! Very nice atmosphere, very friendly staff, well-maintained selection of new and used books, as well as a great bar inside.
Marilyn Shupe
I love this store and the little cafe/bar inside. A great place to shop after visiting Southwest Gardener. They make wonderful homemade sangria and have unique greeting cards and books at really reasonable prices.
Sebastian Zachary
I expected more used books, but most of the selection was brand new stuff at full price. Which isn't terrible, but I just don't have the kind of money to be spending on a lot of books at $15+ per when I can get it cheaper somewhere else. There also wasn't any selection at all for mass market paperbacks. The fact that they have a bar in the place was pretty neat though. Definitely a more upscale place!
Zach D
Cool place. Great concept. I had a strange experience though. The bar staff didn't want to give me the time of day to get me a drink, despite a fairly empty bar crowd...Too busy chatting with either regulars or other employees. Made me feel like I wasn't cool enough to be there or something. We left without a purchase.
Lisa Anderson
Nice selection, smqll, upscale bookstore vibe. The pub and lounging area seemed cool, but i didn't have enough time to hang out. Prices seemed a little high, but I can't be sure.
Ashley Petersen
This is a great mix between used bookstore and new releases. It's got a reliable selection of a little bit of everything, with added bonus of quirky gifts, and small cafe/bistro where you can get coffee and snacks. It hosts live events, and has an adjoining restaurant, so if you love browsing bookstores and wish you could make an entire date night out of it, this is the place.
Loretta Love Huff
This bookstore has some of the most unique and amazing books I've ever seen. It's a bit hard to see from the street so you have to pay attention. There are meeting rooms in the back. The large room is a community space but it's quiet, so still functional. One of my favorite places. They have wifi and healthy, light cuisine plus a bar. They also have small private meeting rooms for a fee.
K Perkins
Always has great stuff to browse and buy
Shepard Humphries
This is a Progressive/left bookstore, so while they do have 2% "Conservative / right" books, nothing at all in the anarcho-capitalist or voluntaryist areas... 😒. Plenty of light-hearted books though for normal folks! Awesome interior, very inviting with a coffee bar. …
Allicia Says
This place has so much to offer for a bookstore. They have trinkets, games, journals, air fresheners, a bar... you name it they probably have it. They have a large selection of books and are helpful if you ask. Otherwise just browse and figure it out! They are stocked by genre and then alphabetical, but if you forget they have stickers on the shelves telling you. There are a few benches peppered around the store to preview your reads. When you check out they give you a punch card for a discount off a future purchase. They also buy back your books for a portion of the price which you can then use to purchase books in the store! Pretty sweet deal for one of the few good bookstores left.
James K
I called ahead and spoke with Rafael and asked if he had the book called "The Profit" by Khalil Gibran. He said yes and offered to set aside several copies aside for me to pick from. VERY helpful and superb service. I will always come back to this book shop. Nothing beats working with a staff that care you.
Jayden Miller
Nice to see a bookstore recognizing Black History Month. Great selection of books and gifts. Also has a great bar! Check it out! Highly recommended!
Alex Brown
Great place to hangout and get some work done. The bar has delicious strong coffee along with some good sweets. They also have a fantastic selection of craft beer including some rare local finds.
Jayson Matthews
Book stores don’t have an easy market in order to compete. Yet, Changing Hands is an institution, a home, for book-lovers in the Valley of the Sun.
A warm and welcoming environment. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. And did I mention the bar? Oh yes, there is a lovely pub serving beer and wine to help (or hinder) your book purchasing.
The world is a better place because of businesses like Changing Hands. Please visit, buy some books, and stay awhile.
Betterdaze S
I love this place. It's a book store. It's a gift shop. It's a bar. From the kitchen to the garden you will find fitting unique gifts at Changing Hands. Also you will find lots of books.
Joy Zelmanovich
I went to Changing Hands for the first time for a book reading (Jasmine Guillory). I've been to the Tempe location which is also nice but this location has a really lovely venue for readings. There was even a raging fire going on--how cozy. Best of all is the cafe/bar that serves Modern Times on tap, along with wines by the glass and coffee. I will definitely be back! Changing Hands is a real gem.
John Trevino
Locally driven with all the best goodies and reads... Finished with the friendlist of staff. Walk your way to first draft bar and you are greeted promptly with a smile and an inquiry of what you are in the mood for... I usually go for a well made latte, but on occasion I will indulge in there local brews on draft. The best part is the modest choice of a half pint, or a healthy full pint serving. Check this place out and fall in love with the ambience as I have.
Gloria Trejo
This is a great book store, easy to lose track of time here. They have new and used books along with trinkets and small gifts. They hold live performances with authors and seek local items as well. I love that they have benches dispersed throughout so you can look through a book and decide which to buy. With a try.
Klathena Timbers
Loved it! Had a wide variety and featured LGBT+ books. The cafe was delicious (I cant remember which location has it but it is)
Jessica McClure
This has been my favorite bookstore for years and it never ever gets old. I love BOTH locations immensely.
Courtney B
Cute little bookstore, not a huge selection of books but love the used book options mixed in with the new ones.
The bar inside, First Draft, is a great perk. They have a ton of beer and wine options. I also noticed a small food menu. I bought my book, grabbed a beer and settled in next to the fireplace for a bit to read a few pages. Great space!
Jake Holden (Jake H.)
Great place!! Love the concept of bookstore and coffee/beer. However, hate that they start pushing you out AN HOUR before close. They have several people walking around going "just so you know we close in an hour". 15-20 minutes? I get but an hour? Kind of ridiculous.
Frank Anthony Esquibel
Best locally owned bookstore in Phoenix.
They also have a coffee shop and gift shop!❤️
Jessica Ramirez
The atmosphere of the store gives you the warmest and most relaxed feeling. The staff are always alert and willing to help. And a wide selection of all kinds of things and books keep you wandering around for hours. The store leaves you satisfied and wanting to come back every time
Connie Jay
What a fun place. Great stock of books and merchandise and you can sit and read while having a great-really great craft beer. Definitely going back. They are also doing a great job with Covid, etc
Katie Kelly
Love this store. They have several different book clubs, which are great. They have a bar with appetizers, wine, beer, and food. The bookstore itself is great to browse with good book options. Definitely a great place to spend an afternoon.
Gary D
Amazing selection of books and gifts!
Sergio Mosqueda
The most up to date titles available. Excellent location, pleasant atmosphere. Service is highly professional. For the thirsty, they have a small and cozy pub loaded with respectable abv IPA's. Stop by, you'll love it.
Eben Visher
What an amazing find! A gem! Googling Changing Hands Bookstore, I expected a ho-hum used book store. Instead I found a work of art just stuffed with wondrous things. It has excellent stocking choices, a loving and friendly staff to die for, a mix of used and new books covering every topic and area that I might ever want, and an ambiance that is beautiful to touch and sight. Someone with phenomenal taste and skill has made a haven where book lovers, doting grandparents seeking books to help raise another great generation of readers, scholars, and esthetes of all sorts will feel like they have landed in high clover. I spent a delightful hour and considered myself blessed.
I highly recommend Changing Hands Bookstore as a way to while away wonderful hours, weeks, and months, thus enhancing your life.
Griffin Wiebel
Boasting a large variety of both popular and unique titles, a helpful staff, and an indoor pub and hangout space, Changing Hands is a great place to connect with fellow book-heads and explore new titles. You can't go wrong with anything on the shelves, check it out!
David Thomas
If you think the independent bookstore is dead, you'd do well to take a look at the future. Changing Hands is compact, delightful and an amazing small bookstore. Packed with new and used books, gifts and backed with a bar, you could spend a day hanging out and enjoying on the best book shops in America.
Edward Araujo
Both new and used books reasonably priced. The Station has reasonable coffee prices and good service. The presentation room is a great place to both congregate with friends, enjoy a presentation, or just drinking coffee with friends.
Shama Besley
One of my happy places. If you are a bookstore lover or wanting to find a unique gift for someone check out chaging hands, you won't be disappointed.
Ceyshe Napa
Wonderful bookstore that supports our local communities. Excellent staff and rewards program. Highly recommend for books and memorable gifts. :)
Elsbeth Pollack
Trendy bookstore with a wine bar inside. New release and classic books, as well as an extensive children's section and small gift items for sale, like wind chimes, kitchen items, candles, and notecards. They have events going on all the time. Great place for gifts.
Lynn Beaudoin
I came to Changing Hands for the first time. They had an event going on for Syrian refugees. I got some nice handmade goodies from the lovely Syrian women. I also browsed the store. They have cute and fun trinkets as well as a wide variety of literature. I ended up buying 2 books.
Julie McNeely-Kirwan
The selection of books is excellent and the wine bar is really nice. But there has always been something about the place that bothers me a little. Quite honestly, the atmosphere lacks a certain warmth--some members of the staff in the book area just aren't very welcoming and one or two seem a bit full of themselves. I do not offer this criticism lightly, as I live in the neighborhood and feel that Changing Hands has raised the tone of the whole area.
Pat Smith
Love this place! Bought a cookbook, magazine & 3 birthday cards. It's the kind of place that promotes browsing to your heart's content & if so inclined, you can sit & enjoy a beverage & hang out. Just perfect!
Matt Mike
Love it here. The bookstore itself is really great with way more than just books, but what sets it apart as truly unique is the bar inside. They have an excellent selection of beers too.
Alexis Ortiz
I went shopping for gifts for my brother and sister's birthdays (6 yo and 8 yo respectively). I found a handful of cute gifts for them and something for me for a reasonable price. I also enjoy the puzzles and games section; it's where I found a sudoku book that is harder than I anticipated. I still play it.
Douglas Bonnell
Such a great hidden bookstore.....readers are leaders.
Minor problem stale gum, but come on Fancy Fruit...where can you find a childhood memory, and my little peep loved the zebra tattoos.
John Evans
Chill place with nice service. Hang out read a book, journal, sip a beer or coffee
Tania Alvarez
I love this place! I bought some books and stayed to read and had a bear while doing so!
EC Blue
Great customer service, and great selection of books and merchandise (lots of fun novelty items too). Great location (with a bar in case you get thirsty while you read). Glad to shop local independent businesses.
Rachel Anderson
This place was absolutely wonderful! So many books and such cute decorative knickknacks! Adorable!
Tyler Walters
The selection here is not as good as the other Changing Hands location, but it is a cooler spot. The coffee and beer served at the bar inside is really good, and they still have a lot of books.
robert burris
Beautiful store. Love the environment of it. Craft beer and wine. Took off a star because they only seem to carry mostly new items. Missing the old book charm
Angela Di Venti
Cool lil place looking for a unique gift, for that person that has everything. Nice book selection, large coffee bar and sitting area. Staff are always helpful and they provide a punch card for reward system. Enjoy the other local venders next door if you get time.
Nicole Peterson
Amazing selection of books. Thoughtfully organized. Super helpful and knowledgeable staff. Prices are amazing, especially for pre-owned books.
Ginger Horton
Changing Hands went above and beyond to help me get a gift to someone long-distance. Customer service doesn't even begin to cover how Amy, Nancy, and Rafael are kind and helpful and thoroughly committed to helping customers.
Steve Bailey
Changing Hands is a fine little bookstore BUT. It's little gem is the First Draft which is the only place I've been to where i can buy a Book Review and have two draft beers. They have a revolving tap for draft beers; locally brewed cans at 50% off for take home; bottles of local meads and wines; outstanding. And if you finish your book review you can step into the back room for a local author's presentation; and more. Ms Nguyen does an outstanding job of managing that space. Kudos. See you soon.
Kat K
Such a cute book store and cool bar. Came here on a date but ran out of stuff to do here. Overall I like it, but it's not somewhere you spend several hours at unless you're using the event room.
Nicholas Tapia
Changing hands is a great bookstore. The cafe, not as much. The book store's higher prices than Amazon (not always though!) come with an exceptionally curated book selection, immediate delivery, and a beautiful environment.
I understand that pretty much everything 'nice' in Phoenix is costing more money now, and the value proposition is pretty clear: well maintained and designed environment with thoughtful, interesting, and good food / drinks and sometimes, good service.
The food / drinks offered simply aren't worth the price. The hummus plate seems like it is from Safeway. The iced tea (both green and black) are often watered down and for all I know is Lipton. The pie (I've had pecan and berry) seem like they are from Costco.
To be clear, all those products are perfectly fine! But not at the price they are being offered.
For a $5 slice of pie I want it made by the best pie shop in Phoenix, delivered recently, with quality ingredients, and reheated evenly. Maybe even a garnish?
I'll keep coming to both the bookstore (awesome) and cafe (meh) because it is a great place to buy books and to work. But I'll only order the absolute minimum and I'll rarely enjoy it.
Christine Moore
Ever delightful visiting Changing Hands to discover new titles and authors! Plus the witty, clever, sassy (snarky) doodads tucked here and there on endcaps never fail to provoke appreciative (and guilty) giggles.
Amanda Whitehurst
Love getting books for Kids here. Such a fun space.
Jason
My favorite bookstore in the Phoenix. Great place for books and unique gifts.
If I had to rate First Draft I would give it a 1 star review - happy hour prices weren't updated online and aren't even a good deal, since the food and drinks are already outrageously overpriced (e.g. standard pretzel for $8). It is a great concept and cute name but it really bugs me that First Draft prices everything as if it were at a ballpark.
Kate Tegtmeyer
Great locally owned bookstore with fun gift items as well as a bar inside. What more could you want?!
Ed Van Winkle
Great old school bookstore with a cafe, wine and beer. Book selection is great, and good selection of holiday and other knick knacks.
Catherine Laun
This is my go-to spot for great, unique gifts for anyone in your life. Recently purchased cute items for a friend graduating college and a colleague who is retiring. Of course they also have an expansive supply of new and used books. Definitely worth stopping by for a quality shopping experience.
Donna Young
Oh such a great place, so much more than books, fun gifts, the first draft beer and
Ariana Tinius
I love this store. I've been going to their book clubs for years now and I've recently begun volunteering there and it's just a wonderful experience. Everyone there is super nice and just it's a really nice atmosphere.
Blanca Mojica
Good: Nice place to spend time by yourself or with friends, the atmosphere is calm. You can order something to drink or eat in the bar-coffee shop. Close to a light rail station. Bad: There are not enough parking lot spaces.
Breakeven Paradox
Great staff. Super clean. Great prices. Awesome selection. It has a coffee bar inside and small gift shop. Lots of used books. Next door is a quaint restaurant that smelled yummy but we didnt eat there. We definitely found a little treasure in Phx.
Caleb Anderson - Realtor - Tom Ferry Coach
Awesome local bookstore featuring regular events, good selection and bar. It doesn't get much better than that really! Be sure to participate in the "blind book" program. You never know you may find a new favorite!
Kim Vigil
Super cute bookstore with snacks, beer, cocktails, tea. or coffee options. Friendly staff and great vibe!
Stacie Banks
We love to visit this store. They have a wide selection of books and fun gifts. It's nice to be able to grab a glass of wine or a beer while you shop in the evening.
Dora Howell
Such a charming place. Relaxing environment. Friendly staff. It's not close to my home but would make the drive just to go again.
Dillon Cain
Booooks! If they don't have it (and for me they rarely do) they can order it. That might take a while and if course you're paying "full price" versus a mega corporation online retailer but you're also supporting people who deserve to be supported.
The camelback location doesn't have many used books to choose from and their overall selection can feel limited as well.
They obviously make a good deal of money from their chochkies and knick knacks as they take up the front of the store and most end caps.
The atmosphere of First Draft isn't what I'd call fun, but it's mellow and an easy place to do homework or think about building a birdhouse I guess.
Note : if you order online and pickup in store you won't get a stamp card, even if you ask for it in the order, so I don't do that anymore.
Crystal Chandler
I love this book store! They always have what I am looking for, though I wish paperbacks came as fast as hardcovers. The service is always great, the events hosted are fun and my favorite part is their rewards system.
Angela Colabucci
I absolutely love the concept of a bookstore/ coffee shop and bar. The fact that I can grab a glass of pinot and browse books is just heavenly! It's a wonderful little hang out attached to a restaurant and full service bar in case you get hungry or decide you want to drink something a little stronger than wine or beer at the bookstore. They have an amazing book selection and I find smething new and interesting every time I visit the place. It's honestly the cutest!
Also, recently I went to an AWESOME midnight Harry Potter book release party and I gotta say, they really outdid themselves. From the costume contest, to trivia, to table top quidditch, to fortune telling- It was an absolute blast! They had old potions bottles on tables, a Harry Potter themed snack and drink menu, and a chimney with envelopes falling from the sky :) Although, it was jam-packed, it seemed like First Draft really tried to make everyone happy and got the books out to everyone right at midnight.
Keith Mulvin
Great coffee. Relaxing environment. Robust selection of books. Fantastic selection of beer. And, the best part, it's local! What else would you want from a book store?!
Jaina Mistry
Awesome bookstore! Folks working there are friendly and helpful, and love the bar inside.
Darryl Brown
An excellent "mom & pop" bookstore with top-notch customer service! If they don't have the book you want, they can special order it for you. Big name authors and celebrities are known to drop by and give talks. You'll also find crafts, toys, and even clothing in the store, as well as The First Draft Bar serving craft beer and wines.
Katie Wilson
Such a nice and classy place. All the perks of shopping local with out the price you would be cautious of. Being able to get a beer or glass of wine during browsing really increases the experience!
Luckyl7fe
Very Friendly place. I've never seen a bar and bookstore in the same building. New experience, it was a very good first impression.
Amy
Grab some wine and a used book to curl up to. Fun, easygoing atmosphere and staff.
Yolande Grill
One of my favorite bookstores. In addition to books, there's a gift shop with very 7nique items in a range of prices. On this visit I had a cappuccino at the bar and it was great.
Dennis Morton
Vast selection of books. great layout. love the book bar and back room with very comfortable chairs. have a seat. order a glass or wine or your favorite ipa beer, and have great conversation.
Marlys Weaver
Fantastic local, independent bookstore that also houses the First Draft Book Bar, which offers wine, beer, coffee, tea, and a variety of little items to nibble. Changing Hands offers a fantastic selection of books, gifts, and hosts great events!
Martina B
I stopped going here a while back because I found their staff kind of pretentious. However, I dropped in today for a coffee and remembered why I used to go there regardless of their pretentious staff. The coffee is delicious!
Jason Wright
Great selection of contemporary books, cozy bar and reading area with fireplace. Not a whole lot of fantasy and sci-fi though. If you're looking for Nth book in your series, they usually have to order it.
Rebecca Driggs
Unique offerings and clever gift items. The staff clearly loves books. It feels good to support a bricks and mortar book store, even though I am a dedicated Kindle reader.
Chuck Linton
Changing Hands Bookstore is a book store that sells surgical manuals on hand transplant techniques. If you or somebody you care about is looking to remove and swap out their hands and is confident with a scalpel then you may find some interesting reads. I know I sure did. I haven’t started on my left hand but my right hand is almost completely off. Five stars for a catering to DIY medical procedures.
C C
Very helpful staff for looking up my list of books and walking around locating all of them. The kids section is super awesome from unique toys to activity books to a section for toddler books!
David Sterne
I love this book store. I love that they carry products you aren't going to find at the mainstream book stores. I love that there is a bar and they have fun events. You mostly find stuff at cover price, but it's worth it.
Judith D.
I have come to Changing Hands @ The Newton since they first opened, and still love it so much! It has added so much activity to the neighborhood, and where else can you get a half-pint of a local beer and browse books? They have way more than just books though, it is my go to place for gift shopping, for kids & adults!
Barbara Hopkins
Eveything about this bookstore is wonderful, the selection of books and all sorts of fun things i didn't think i needed but all at once knew I did. Very peaceful, everyone is very helpful - great bookstore!
Lorraine S
The atmosphere, products, trinkets, bar and employees make this place so special. It makes the prices bearable. Supporting local businesses is so important and this place is worth every penny. I love every minute spent here.
Perry Nally
I love that you can grab a book and sit and eat some food or have a drink and read. Makes for a great place to get some time for yourself or with some friends. It's a great atmosphere for the book lover in me.
GP Wise
Need a book? Get it here. Need a fun, unique gift? Get it here. Want a glass of wine and a place to relax and read that book? Get it here. Changing Hands is a part of the fabric of our community. They are worthy of your dollar based on the products alone, add the local ownership and community component and they have more than earned it.
Clottee Hammons
One of the great things about Changing Hands Bookstore is the accessibility from public transportation. I've had several conversations with out of town visitors on the literail that considered it one of the high points of their trip. They are a destination in an otherwise boring landscape.
Steven Bailey
Great place. I like the ability to drink coffee or wine as I browse through out the store. If your looking for a gift for someone you can definitely find it here.
Theresa Rink
Nice people, decent selection of booms, lots of other fun things to buy. Key chains, scarfs, purse, small dishes, signs, socks, tons of cards and toys. Also a beer and tea/coffee place in the store and huge fire place. Woukd be a great place to rent out.
Justin Graffam
Wonderful atmosphere, I went during a Harry Potter night event and it was awesome. Very well maintained store and has some really cute crafts, birthday cards and 3D Pop-up cards
AK “Retr0Gamer1971” Benjamin
Changing Hands Bookstore is the Premier Place in Phoenix to see authors, get signed copies of books, and drink chai tea till you're sick. We saw Maggie stiefvater there. And it was wonderful. A good time was had by all. There is also a full bar, and an Outdoor Cafe type restaurant. Be warned that on and author night, or a weekend night, parking can be a little tight so maybe leave a few minutes early. 4 stars.
Andie Wixom
This store has all the book and cute little tchotchkes every bookstore needs! And great food and drinks. I love it here.
Cyntha Zimmerman
Taking a few hours in front of the fireplace at Changing Hands sipping tea with Constance
So relaxing
Ollie TheStoneCloud
What a fantastic local indie bookshop, great deals, selections, signed copies, even adult beverages and pastries. You can also support them by becoming a libro FM member if you are a book lover like me.
Arcelious
Changing Hands Bookstore in Phoenix is a funky but great bookstore. Great crossections of books of their shelves and a diverse clientel. The Coffee bar and community room where authors present their works, as writers, makes coming to this hangout a wonderful adventure. Last week attended a presentation on Native American foods, how to find them and why they are important. Also, got to sample one dish prepared by the presenting chef.
Lezlie Gordon
What a delightful bookstore, gift shop and place to have drinks and snacks.
Jill McCartney
Great store with a great selection of new and classic books. Also has unique decor, notebooks, and other gifts. Will definitely be visiting again.

Daniel Lambert
A really nice store with a good vibe.
Katy Borhauer
Shop local bookstores! Great kid and teen selection. Shelves lined with helpful staff recommendations. Decent gift options, too. Prices reasonable.
Angelica Gonzalez
They order the books you want. Always have something going on at the bar. Great place to buy gifts and books for kids and fun stuff for adults.
Samantha Rettig
I thought bookstores were all the same. Nope, this one blew my mind away. It is cozy and you can drink while you shop/browse. I will definitely make a return trip when I come back to Arizona.
Peg Nelson
Love both locations. New location has a bar so you can get a glass of wine with you when you go in to listen to the guest author.
Room is very large and difficult to hear when the author loojs to another part of the room. No microphones.
S J
This place is always a pleasant experience! The staff are down to earth and the bookstore offers more than just books!
Autum F
Love to hang out here early Morning to listen to the children singing while I shop! Great selection of unique and handmade trinkets. Great selection of incenses too 😉 …
Denise Hill
I love browsing here. It is such a comfy store. We love the atmosphere here too. And of course it is great to get a beverage and find great books!
Andrew Fleming
I love this place. They have such great knickknacks and amazing books
Carnie Black
If you sit at the bar and have coffee, the wine glasses sparkle invitingly overhead.
"Carnie, darling, have a wine," they beckon.
"It's nine o'clock in the morning."
"It's wine, love. Lovely wine."
In all fairness, the bar seats are hard, and they didn't have coffee, which seemed to embarrass the barista just as much each and every time he had to say so. Plus, instead of offering wine as a substitute, he offered me an Americano. But, what can I say? He was a darling.
In all fairness, what this place lacked in seat cushions and a properly operating coffee maker, it more than made up for in ambiance. Well-lit, no screaming grinders, and scent of books and incense made for a pleasant visit.
I'm going back soon. But, not for coffee.
Krista Hinz
This is my new happy place. But really, my new WFH location.
Allison Meyer
This is my favorite place in the whole Phoenix area to buy gifts and/or spend a few hours hanging out. Whether I need a card, a book, a gift for a coming birthday, or a few minutes to myself, this is the best place around.
Charlie Hiralez
Well worth the trip for book lovers. Lots of great ideas for gifts. Really nice staff. And, the is bar inside. Awesome place to chill
K Yamasaki
Love a place where you can still have a glass of wine or a mug of coffee AND find a great read.
Ben Hagaman
Truly the best, great atmosphere staff and selection. Wonderful place to spend some time
Dina R
This bookstore is huge and has a lot of great gift items. They also do so many creative events and the staff goes all out!
Eric Valencia
Amazing place! Wonderful beer and coffee, as well as a great variety of books. Wander about with a beer in hand and discover something new.
MacKenzi Verner
Love visiting independent bookstores when I'm out of town and this one was great! Lots of great books and cute gifty things.
Michael T (Slade)
Great book store.
Danielle Borsje
Called to ask if they had a specific item. They took the time to go look for the item and was able to put the item on hold. Great customer service! Love this place.
Nikki Paulat
Super cozy, well-organized and friendly, with thoughtful recommendations! What more could you ask for? Both locations have their own charm, 10/10!
Kelly Mulvany
GREAT selection both new and used books. Cafe/wine bar is the best. LOVE this store!
Lex Byrd
This is a great bookstore. The Tempe location seems to have more selection as far as their lit goes. But the bar inside the Phoenix location is a nice touch.
Mark Ratony
If you like books and novelty items, come spend the day here. Very comfortable atmosphere and very friendly people. The food is also awesome.
Megan Leathers
Small beer and wine selection. Great book selection. Prices are about what I would expect. If I'm ever in Phoenix again, I will definitely be back!
Pam Hickey
Ever since 1979, Changing Hands has been my favorite bookstore. To this day, I meet up with old college pals to have reunions. Thanks for always being there. One of my favorite haunts in PHX and Tempe!
Matthew O'Brien
Very cool place and more than a book store. The place is bog and is a full on gift shop as well as a coffee, beer and wine bar with tons os space for hanging out.
Tony White
Want to grab a book and a beer (or wine)!? You can here...😋😷👍Great staff, great community place. AND it's next to the Southern Rail! …
Jon Ross
A quaint place with a coffee bar. They have a fair variety of fiction and children's books. Not enough history and used books for my taste, and a little noisy at nighttime.
Bryan Bazley
Wonderful locally owned bookstore with a bar! Lots of book signings and rooms to rent for your own meetings. A vibrant gathering venue in uptown.
Lesley Marshall
Always a fun place to browse books, unique gifts and grab a bite to eat (and something to drink). Best bookstore AZ.
Lauren Davis
Best bookstore around! They even have tarot cards & eclectic stuff.
Fatty McB
Friendly enough staff, they did have a kind of snobby tone in their voice, but looking at the surroundings I believe I understand why
They definitely had a facade of wanting to help people, but a deep look into their eyes and you can tell that they were a bit "too good" for us common folks
michael marshall
Cool place to browse and look at books. There's a bar area where you can get coffee, beer and wine and work on your laptop. There's also a good restaurant next door if you get hungry.
Superboiii sanchez
So many fun trinkets and loads of classic books and new reads. Very nice interior and coffee books and drinks are a great grouping.
Gregg Sobek
I didn't get much time here but the staff was very helpful and they had a great selection of books on women's empowerment for little girls. They also gift wrapped the books for me.
Douglas Bennett
This bookstore is not ideal for trading in books. They only accept pristine, practically brand new books for trade-in, and then only give you minimal store credit for it. The price of the books inside the store only vary in price buy .50 between used and brand new.
Lisa “PL”
I love this store. My daughter took me in there for the 1st time on Mothers day. Not just a book store, they sell everything!
Even a restaurant!
Zach Benally
Good quite place to have a beer and book to read. Friendly service. I would definitely return to this place.
Scott Cathcart
One of best bookstores I’ve seen in the world. Such a great soothing vibe.
Carol Nicolaisen

Dyson Ellis
Great selection of books and a knowledgeable staff to help you find what it is you are looking for. Well organized great recommendations, oh and they have a coffee shop and a bar in it as well!
Sarah Brown
This place is so cute! Love doing work here. Bring a sweater if it's summertime... they keep the AC pretty chilly. Maybe that's how they incentivize me to keep getting hot tea :)
Kelligrace Hernandez
This place is a golden treasure of Phoenix. Has amazing books for kids and adults alike. Coffee and beer bar is a plus. This place is one of my favorite places to go but it's expensive.
Patty Price
This has been a family favorite for decades and now I come here with my son to pass down the tradition. The gift selection always has something fun and unique to take home with your soon to be favorite book.
William Morris
Great place for book browsing, small gifts, magazines, or a drink. The bar here serves coffee, snacks, wine, and beer. Fun place to hangout. Often crowded in the early evenings.
Carlotta M. Horrace
This is ABSOLUTELY a SUPER bookstore, and so far, my favorite one here in Phoenix. (Mind you, it's only been 21 months, but overall, I DO know my bookstores, after nationwide exposure!)
The GREAT points are:
1. The eclectic selection [they have the kind of books that I, (PERSONALLY,) LOVE; LOTS of Creativity, Self-Development, Spirituality (VS Religion!) and Spiritual Growth, etc...]
2. The UNIQUE and SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE gift and "REALLY CUTE STUFF" scattered throughout. .
3. The VERY nice coffee bar with WiFi, And attached (EVEN BETTER!) ->
!!! Comfy LOUNGE !!! area for Hanging Out, with mucho OUTLET support ! ! ! . ..
AND ...
4. The AWESOME lineup of speakers, workshops, and just plain FUN activities that they schedule on a regular basis, with nationally recognized authors and speakers. Bravo!
The ONLY bad points:
1. Well... Space. It's a wee bit crowded, AND . .. well, MORE books, MORE Cute Stuff, etc, etc, would be just great. I DO understand that the Tempe store IS bigger, but - it's in TEMPE, guys. I LIKE that area there, and I live HERE.
2. Would like to see the coffee bar menu expanded just a (wee?) bit ... Just maybe a (BLENDER?) It's Phoenix. Something ICY would be just GREAT, 10 months out of the year . .. if not a blender, then a [FREEZER?] for pre-frozen, low time-consumption concoctions (i.e. ice cream, sherbet, smoothie MIX?)
Just a suggestion.
Finally: . .. #3. I know we "Gotta Make Money" . .. but after a long hard week, I headed to my FAVORITE hangout with a (new) out-of-town guest, bragging about my ... well, "Hang-out" and what was happening? A (Loud!), (Private!), reception.
They were slightly disturbing our literary "Ambience" on the other side of the coffee bar, and in ANY case, the point was, there was almost no room to just really RELAX and "HANG" a bit.
[Just a (little) corner of that big room for us ... I would have even PAID a small cover charge for the privilege. AND ... There were no outlets on our side, and THEY weren't even using them (!!) as we (bookphiles) indignantly, but quietly, and politely, observed to each other across the way. Okay. All done. Sorry about the soapbox.]
So, that's my spiel for the day, and
AGAIN -
Overall, I LOVE this place!
Andy Gallegos
I love the variety of books and the co-op plaza is such a cool and eclectic spot for Phoenix. Great place to meet friends for food, a drink and enjoy a good book!

This place is amazing it has wonderful gift shop with a whole lot of unique items in it it has a cozy bar and drinking area some stuff is a little overpriced but I understand it's a business but I liked it it was really nice to just go and even just look at the nice things they have in there so I will come back also they hold workshops to make some of the things that they sell in the gift shop for your own personal collection so just so you know and airfordable some class to $30 or fifteen it just depends on what you doing
Sean DeNairo

LaKeta Kemp

It's a shame that more bookstores aren't like this one. They have a great selection of books and magazines, as well as cool little gifts, and a bar- right in the store. The future of bookstores right here.
Alyssa A Ellsworth
Love the atmosphere. The only issue was I had difficulty working on my laptop because the internet didn't really work for me. I tried the password and it wasn't working :/
Carina Leland
Cute local bookstore! It was a little hard to find the books I was looking for on my own, the sorting is a little odd. The staff were very helpful, though, and I soon found some of them.

Dolores Segovia
Delightful little bookstore. With many little treasures if you dare to seek!
Teresa Zappulla
Love the variety of books available and the drink bar inside is a nice touch.
Mega AND
A little smaller than I expected, it's cool that they had a bar and coffee area would be better if they had like a loungy areas well with couches because everywhere they have to sit is either the bar or very uncomfortable seats is that stick out of the wall, the prices were good but they were all for outdated or really old books while the super expensive ones we're all the new books there was like no middle ground
Jose Cuellar
They have great pretzels and the white cheese was amazing. Great beer selection and can't go wrong with it all being in a bookstore.
Beldon James

Interesting finds. Can be a little pricey, but they have used books as well. Little coffee shop/ bar to relax in with space to read new purchases.
Barbara Hopkins
The kind of bookstore you can be in for hours but swear it was only a short time, so much to see and experience yet calming. Go here for books, leave feeling centered.

Michele Page
Best bookstore in Phoenix. Wonderful selection of new releases and classics. Very knowledgeable and friendly booksellers.
denise bat
I have been to this store before but will NEVER be there again. The reason being that Changing Hands thinks that the NRA is the most dangerous org. Obviously it was the NRA that did the shooting in Fla. It seems like some people are just stupid or blind or both.
Jason Cook
Not the most expansive book store but a fantastic place to buy a book, get a drink and have a quiet, cozy place to enjoy your book and beer.
GILDA COBRETTI
Love Changing Hands! Always unique items and beyond knowledgeable and friendly staff
