Reviews of Next Chapter Booksellers
Emily Collins
I love shopping at Next Chapter - although it's dangerous for me. I'll frequently order books on their website for pick up and then stop in the store and buy five more :) The staff is SO friendly and so knowledgeable. I got into a casual conversation with Grant about music and he recommended books that would fit my music tastes. The recommendation was spot on. I will never stop shopping here.
Sean Lawrence
I absolutely love Next Chapter! They have a really well curated book selection and do a great job highlighting new and exciting reads. I always ask Emily to give me a sci-fi/fantasy book recommendation and she has a 100% hit rate for delightful books

I am grateful for their support of the Macalaster Groveland Little Free Library scavenger hunt! I enjoyed browsing and shopping on a calm weekday morning. It was a very relaxing experience, and they have an incredible selection of books, gifts, and other items.
Rachel Vander Weit
One of my favorite book stores in the twin cities. i love the selection they have, love to see the booksellers recommendations, and they host great events! if you want to visit some bookstores in st. paul, this is a must !

This was a cool spot. It's fairly small so don't expect them to have every book you're looking for but, of what they do have, it's a great little selection. The staff are really nice and willing to help anytime. They have a diverse author list with a lot of authors of color prominently featured. My girlfriend and I have been back a few times already, but now we are going to attend one of the author events in April. Definitely recommend.

A Lovely book store. I saw books from authors I love and had not yet read. Great selection of quality children's books as well. Comfortable chairs to sit in while checking out titles. I heard the very next day that Garrison Keillor was planning on selling it. I hope someone is up for the challenge.
Nicola Koh
Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. They also have a good sense of when I'm just browsing and when I want help. Great selection of books and a v nice space
I loved Common Good Books and hated Garrison Keillor, so im happy to see essentially the same store with the same people re-emerge without him.
Emma Saks
My favorite Indie bookstore in St. Paul right in my neighborhood! The staff is very friendly and they have a great selection. I liked how they have different featured books and staff pics. Also during COVID, I have been ordering from them and the books arrive at my door so quickly!

Is it a nice bookshop? Yes.
Is there a decent selection of books? Sure.
Is it worth the trek across town? I say no.
I honestly was expecting a bit more from this place. I have been wanting to check out this place for a few months now and was happy to finally have the time and energy to venture over this way. In all fairness this is a very nice local shop, but it definitely didn't live up to the hype I imagined. The organization of books was a bit confusing for and the labeling wasn't as clear as I had hoped. Instead of searching for books on topics that might pique my interest, my first several minutes were spent attempting to orient myself in relation to the categories. There was a decent selection of local authors and fiction books, but I found this shop to be lacking on the nonfiction section. After 30 minutes of browsing I left with only a feeling of mild disappointment.
While I did not interact with any of the shopkeepers, I should note that I was never welcomed or offered assistance during my time in the store. In the conversations I overheard with other customers, I could tell they were very knowledgeable about the books and such - but in a way that made me almost feel intimidated to ask for assistance.

This is a fantastic book store with great selection and presentation. They go out of their way to promote great books, especially ones that may not be on everyone's reading list. If you want suggestions for great books, go here. If you want to read the latest genre bestseller, go to a different book store.
Common Good Books also treats authors really well. I was honored to do a reading here, and I would gladly do another. They are very accommodating and encouraging, and they sincerely want to put on great readings.
If you are a lover of books, you have to pay this shop a visit.

I cannot recommend this book store enough! It is filled with wonderful books and has a thoughtful selection! The people there are kind and helpful and try hard to get you the book you are looking for or to give suggestions. Great community business!

I love Common Good. I'm sad that Garrison Keillor isn't someone I want to hang out with, but we all knew there was something off there before it came out, didn't we? This bookstore is so well-curated. They have knowledgeable staff, a frequent buyer club, and it has a great layout. Also, the best neighborhood. And you can just hop over to Red Balloon afterwards.
Aaron Peterson
Wonderfully-curated selection in a well-kept interior with a bright-yet-cozy atmosphere; the staff was friendly without being overbearing.
William Toney
Lovely atmosphere! I find a beautiful new read every time I go in. The staff are very helpful and kind. A nice selection of diverse books and well organized.
Joe de la Cova
High quality book and magazine selections. Friendly and knowledgable staff. Inviting atmosphere with seating. Coffee shop, deli, and restaurants just around the corner. We shop there often for a specific purpose and leave with more than we planned. A real asset to the city.

At first glance, one might think Common Good Books is a store for (forgive me) Democrats, but that might be overthinking it. Perhaps some of the individual people running the store may have leftist political views, but that doesn’t take away a patron’s right to select on their terms.
However, I do highly recommend this store for college students; undergraduate specifically. Paired neatly with the values of Macalester college, students can find books on writing, religion, science, philosophy, gardening, Minnesotan Flora and Fauna, cooking, history, psychology, and memoirs for the nonfiction umbrella. As for the fiction section, it holds a great selection of science fiction, mysteries, horror, and the literary genre. The children’s part in the far back is likewise a place where a child can become fixated for hours. For fast-thinkers, there’s also fantastic collection of graphic novels and comic books. And, of course, an extensive collection of chapbooks, anthologies and collections by new and, well-established poets.
John O'Neill
Great book shop with an expansive selection of new arrivals. Conveniently located next to the college.
Benji Tri
Great independent bookstore tucked in by Macalester (corner of Grand and Snelling). Popular and more eclectic books and graphic novels, with plenty of displays, a helpful staff, and nearby good places to eat.
Amy Danzeisen
My new favorite bookstore! Cozy and current.
C. Lee
Now named Next Chapter, but with the same quality selection, including poetry right at the front of the shop. Towards the rear by the kids' area, there is one column dedicated to books on sale.
Debby Reisinger
Great store. I attended a book reading and staff provided extra chairs and welcome for an overflow crowd. Will order books not in stock.
Rick Wilder
Cute, little local book shop, just like the ones you remember or from once upon a time. The selection may not be the best, but the charm is worth the visit alone.
sonia Feder-Lewis
A wonderful independent bookstore with knowledgeable staff and a wide range of texts. The local authors and poetry sections are particularly strong.
Evil Imp (Evilimp)
Kinda small and cramped. Inconvenient location for me; parking was a challenge. Seems to be geared toward locals that would walk in or pre-order. They do host interesting authors for signings.
Jin Soo Kim
This bookstore makes me want to read. They have a great selection with great display to group different categories together to be easily accessible for people wanting to get to know the subject.
Ariane Laxo
Best bookstore! Easy to order online but this is also a great place to browse. Well curated collection.
Leland Williams
Fantastic, well-thought out collection. Lots of book conversations happening throughout the store. Just wish they had a more extensive sci-fi section.
Theresa Terwilliger
Store has very good selection and is laid out well. If they don't have what you want, they recommend other bookstores.
Andrea Kish
This is a fantastic independent bookstore, and a true treasure in the twin cities! I encourage everyone to use your local independent bookstore!

I love all bookstores. This one is a little snobby. Very difficult to find what you need. Fun to browse, but I dread asking for help.

A great bookstore. Amazing selection. Kid friendly. Grammy approved.
Leigh
Nice selection for a small store! The location is very quiet, and the staff is friendly. Would recommend!
Wendell Bell
Garrison Keillor's bookstore. Pleasant. The expected, plus poetry, theater, essay sections. And esoteric magazines. And a kids section.

Locally owned book store, with amazing selection, and helpful staff!
