Reviews of Birchbark Books & Native Arts

I finally had a chance to make my pilgrimage to this esteemed bookstore, after wanted to get here for years. It was worth the wait! This is one of those charmed independent bookstore in which every title is a must-read. The shelves are full of the very best books of every genre. Close your eyes and grab ANY book off the shelf and you'll go home with a memorable read.
Kay Campbell
A heavenly book shop stuffed with books you haven't heard of & now MUST be part of your life. A perfect example of why we need independent bookshops. I love the staff notes about books & the excellent depth in Native American-linked works for both adults & children. Quirky, beautiful space on a quiet semi-residential street. Make it part of your trip to Minneapolis!
Monique P.
Ease of ordering online, fast shipping & excellent communication I ordered 4 books from their website on April 2nd. They were shipped on April 6th and received today, April 11th. These books were recommended by Lance Tsosie aka Modern Warrior- an Indigenous Social Media influencer. It was important to me to buy from an Indigenous owned shop and Birchbark did not disappoint! I love learning about Indigenous history, culture and current issues(like MMIW), so I’m looking forward to joining Lance’s book club!
Cedric Fredrickson
My first time in a bookstore that didn't have a shamefully small or non-existent section of native books. The staff were friendly, I felt welcome, and at home.
Marcus Corbin
My wife has always wanted to check out this book store as an English teacher! They have a great selection of both Native American and diverse books. The environment inside is extremely welcoming and fun to navigate arouns. Very excited to read some of Louise Erdrich's books!
Aunnie Kramber
Staff are incredible and atmosphere is so welcoming. Love that each section is clearly labeled. Of course, the content of the book store; what a variety of representation among the Native people and so much information at your fingertips.
MAH612 MINNEAPOLIS
Such a perfect spot, owned by the amazing author Louise Erdrich. A true gem- but here and support local native authors rather than BezosGreed

You will always find something...even if you walk in not knowing what you're looking for. It's a very unique space inside and just begs for you to wander and find that special book that is calling your name. Staff are friendly and knowledgable and have made great recommendations; they are a great resource. They pack a lot of subject matter into this space. If you have young readers in your life, make sure you check out the children's and young adult sections too. Birchbark is also a great shop to find greeting cards and gifts for anyone. Thank you, Birchbark - see you soon!
Lloyanne Wallien
Welcoming and patient staff advise on their carefully curated collection. They have a special section of books by contemporary indigenous authors. Serene, comfortable vibe for browsing. Dog friendly too!
Patrick G
Such an amazing gem of a place. Magical in the way that only an independent bookstore can be. Friendly and helpful staff. Lots of signed books available.
David Lincecum
Great store. Nice reviews from employees on selected books. Excellent Native American book selection in addition to popular books on all subjects. Great vibe.
Robyn Barrow
I just received the most beautiful gift wrapped book from Birchbark Books sent by a dear friend. They created a truly special moment with their care and attention to detail. Order books from this wonderful shop!!
Stephanie Friant
Amazing bookstore with the best selection. Can’t help but buy more than planned and want to start reading right away!
Ariane Laxo
Great selection of books and gifts, including many by indigenous authors. Small and charming!
Megan Gaffey
I went in to get a specific book, and the staff was so friendly. Such a lovely location, and so so many books. It made my book-loving-heart go completely bonkers and I went a little compulsive. I got three books and also picked up some super tasty wild rice. It's obscene it's taken me so long to get here, but I try to stick to libraries due to not wanting to add to my giant to-read pile. Will definitely go back.
Alex Roma
Such a neat local bookstore. They have a great selection of books that are hard to find anywhere else, a cool team, and ordering through their website is super easy. I only recently went inside the bookstore for the first time (mostly bc I moved to Minneapolis in 2020, when most places where shut down) and I wanted to live there.
It's a small space jam packed with shelves and shelves of terrific books. There are a few cozy seats scattered throughout, as well. I came away with four books, mostly by authors of color, a couple cool looking bookmarks, and a soap bar in the shape of a turtle that smelled like cedar and sweetgrass.
Jeanne Martens
Great bookstore, little treehouse play area was perfect for a two year old, great selection of books.
Amy Truong
I didn't go in person but purchased books online. The packaging for the books were in extra pristine care; books were in perfect condition! I cannot wait to read them!! :)
The website was very easy to navigate and there are wide selections of different subjects centering indigenous knowledge and peoples. There were also children's books as well, great informative books for your little ones.
Greta Casey
Knowledgeable staff, well curated collection,
Fantastic children's section, great indy bookstore. Plus, the confessional!
Phillip
The curation of books is incredible. Independent bookstore with a focus on native authors. I could spend hours here!
Krystle Young
The online store is quick and easy to use. And I've loved all the recommendations the site promotes. I also have an audio book subscription with them and have listened some good novels too. I hope to visit the store in person some day, if it's as good as the website then I know I will find great recommendations!
Mandy Johnson
The food was amazing! The atmosphere was beautiful and hip.
I would recommend this restaurant to everyone. We had such a good time. The staff was great. They seemed happy to work there. Even the cooks waved as we walked in and out!
Lisa Gouldie
A very unique bookstore focused on Native American culture. The childrens section is amazing. I loved the paintings, birch bark art, and silver jewelery throughout the store. It is a beautiful experience.
Thor Wants Another Letter
Absolutely loved it here! Spectacular selection!!
Rebekah Cedar
Brilliant little shop with lots of options from local authors and local artists. Carefully curated staff picks make the shop feel so personal. Read "The Sentence" by Louise Erdich to feel like you're walking into a novel when you step through the doors.
Francie Kastellos
Beautiful book shop. One of my favorite places to visit!
Julia Drury
We're on a Minneapolis vacation, and my husband and I have to pause and write a 5-star review for this place. This is exactly what you look for in a bookstore! From the moment you walk in there are books from the floor to ceiling on bookshelves, stacked in piles in the corners, just overflowing with classics and new titles from debuting authors. There are thorough, handwritten Staff Picks notes on all the shelves, there are creaky hardwood floors, there are pothos vines draped over bookshelves, and there's the largest collection of works from Indigenous authors we've ever seen in one place; I think it's an unrivalled resource in that way. There's a loft overhead and a "Hobbit Hole" underneath for kids to play in while their parents shop. The employees interacted with each other like good friends, and were upbeat and helpful to work with. This was such a cool experience, and we're so glad we wandered into this neighborhood bookstore in our time in Minneapolis.
Mackenzie S
Recently moved to the neighborhood and adore this bookstore. The staff are SO sweet and they have an incredible curated selection of titles (I pretty much get all my book recommendations from browsing what’s in their windows each week). If they don’t have a particular book you’re looking for they can always order it for you, so with enough advance planning there’s really no need to go anywhere else for your books! Please support this neighborhood native owned business!
Rebecca Darling
Such an excellent shop that has so many different books featuring Native writers, artists, and poets. Such a huge selection- especially kids books. Loved all my purchases. Visit! Shop local!
Jacob Reyes
Just a perfect little local bookstore. Staff is friendly, selection is good and atmosphere is so comfortable. Being able to find native literature for my nephews who live in Metlakatla, AK was exciting.
William Roberts
Loved it. Great staff and ambience and books and more
Rose Tonn
I ordered a book online and it was shipped the next day! As an added bonus, the book I purchased was written by the owner (Louise Erdich) and I received a signed copy.
J Kane
A beautiful space, wonderful staff, and a great vibe! I wish I'd had more time there, but I look forward to returning whenever I visit the Twin Cities! Among my purchases were cards to send to friends and bookmarks - stunning designs by Native American artists. 😊 Excellent service. …
Caroline Bender
I bought the book "Girl Gone Missing (MN Edition)" by author Marcie Rendon online here. I am a fan of Marcie Rendon's work, having read her first book in the series, named "Murder on the Red River." I love the excellent curation of books relating to Indigenous arts and culture in the store. I hope to visit the store in-person someday based on the excellent display of items for sale on the website.
Jennifer Davis
Read indigenous authors, native sources, primary witnesses, les voces autóctones
In/voice "the" author/it/ies
Julie W
One of the best selections of books I've seen. Indigenous books in every section. Excellent, helpful staff. Looking forward to stopping there again!
Sue Friest
Great selection of books for all ages. Stuff was very helpful in choosing a gift for my 8-year-old granddaughter. I love supporting this small business.
Kevin
A delightful little neighbor bookstore ❤️
Kaila Dwinell
After spending a week in awe of the native lands up by the Boundary Waters and northern Minnesota, my partner and I wanted to find some reading material to learn more about what it was like to live up there for native people (before, and during when they were being pushed out). Although we couldn’t go in to this bookstore, the woman working there over the phone suggested some great books. I just finished reading one and I think it might be one of my new favorite books. I will definitely treasure these stories and am so glad we stopped by this bookstore.
Indigo Eriksen
Rich selection of books. Very friendly staff. Native-made jewelry is also available. This is a special place.
Shilo Parisian
Fantastic first order! Definitely coming back for more. I ordered online and the book I ordered wasn't immediately available and they promptly emailed with information on when it would be coming in and shipped out. Was happily surprised when it came and was a signed copy! Thank you Birchbark Books!
Sam Quincy
The most amazing bookstore in the city. Native authors and topics, and a great selection of other books as well. Great place for gifts, including cards and small arts and crafts. Children's books, poetry, indigenous studies, law, climate, history, fiction, nonfiction, baby books, young adult, and much more. Every book feels carefully selected and is in stock for a reason.
Jill Rust
Cozy little book store with lots of native American books and nature type books. A decent selection of children's books -especially unique books. I enjoyed perusing the children's books by Native authors and looking through the many biological type books in the store. Not a large selection of Native products, but a few interesting ones. Staff was eager to be helpful but not pushy.
Demian Vincenty
What a nice shop, so thoughtfully put together. Would love to have an afternoon to look more carefully through many more of the titles. Def. an opportunity to learn more about our history and our Native American legacy.
Roberto
Amazing bookstore! I found a beautiful selection of bird books and I bought the biggest one for a very good price. The staff is sooo nice
Zoie Hawpetoss
I bought from them online and they were incredible. Not all of the books I ordered were available and they let me know right away they would be ordered and sent out ASAP. I got the books I ordered quickly even the ones that were not immediately available. They have a wide variety of native books and I will be ordering more soon! Support native!
Daniel Garcia
Very quaint Naive American themed bookstore in the heart of the Lake of the Isles neighborhood. Large selection of children's books, books on metaphysics and History as well. A very wonderful feature is that there are summaries and recommendations throughout the store to flesh out your choices, so give yourself ample time to browse.
John O'Neill
Pretty incredible bookstore. They have an expansive array of books. A great resource for the community.
Grant Martin
This is a fantastic bookstore in a very pretty neighborhood. On almost every shelf, you'll find cards with handwritten reviews/suggestions from the staff. It's not a huge space, but there's enough room to browse without crowding other customers. I could have spent hours there.
Jamila Hakam
One of my favorite bookstores in the Twin Cities. A great selection of top-notch authors and their works in a wide range of genres and topics. The atmosphere and decor of Birchbark are cozy and welcoming.
Naomi Thyden
I could spend hours at this small bookstore! I did a lot of my Christmas shopping here this year. I love their handwritten staff picks all over the store and the variety of high quality books they have. There are also some nice Native products like jewelry and wild rice.
Teresa Monkkonen
Really nice, non cookie cutter book independent book shop. Cookbook and children's section as well. Great selection and a great place to go if you've run out of ideas for what to read. Nice atmosphere and nice notes on staff on some of the books.
Joaquin Muñoz
This is undoubtedly one of my favorite bookstores in town. The selection of American Indian texts is unmatched in the city, and selection of young adult and children's literature by Indigenous authors is unparalleled. Come here. Support your local bookstore.
Adele Zephier
My friend took me to this little store. This store is tucked off the main street. But was amazed at their book selections and all the assortment of beautiful handmade gifts. This store also smells good and tje clerks were friendly. I loved this store. I wanted to see more...It should be bigger!
Harry Funk
I love that Birchbark has titles I won't find at chain bookstores. The staff is welcoming and friendly. The store manages to fit an amazing number and range of books while still seeming roomy. It's a real shame the cafe next door closed - the two locations worked well together (owner was unreasonable on the lease renewal, I hear).
Perhaps best of all, they'll order anything they don't have, and remind you when it comes in (rather necessary for me, I'm afraid). Highly recommended.
John Contreras
I always love visiting this bookstore whenever I'm in town. Super friendly staff, and such a wonderful selection of poetry books! Also, there's a ton of variety of genres!
Nick Cross
This is a great little bookstore. They have a large selection of books written by and about Native Americans. Staff offer lots of advice and are friendly. There is a little nook for kids to play in while you shop.
Michael H.
This is our favorite book store ever! We love the atmosphere, intelligent and inspiring book selection and staff is so helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. And congratulations on the New York Times article in the July 26th issue! Well done and well deserved!!.
Peter Thomas
This place is amazing, and I hadn't asked how they do their Covid-related protocols,
(They do curbside, shop online, purchase ahead online or by phone!), and I had walked there a couple of miles, from home, in the cold, cutting it within 5 minutes of closing time....doh! The staff person I dealt with was supernice, Anthony, and he worked with me very warmly and professionally.
We had spoken on the phone the previous day, so he knew exactly where the Solstice-present-for-my-grown-daughter book was, (The Marrow Thieves), and we did a socially distanced transaction.
The jewelry and gifty cards in the window bespoke volumes of local and Native artist support, and I know the store,(owned mostly by World renowned author Louise Erdrich and her talented artist and producer sister Heidi), does many amazing traditional classes, readings and booksignings, storytelling and Community artist events when we're not in pandemics !
Easily 5 Stars out of 5 !🔥
Amy Schutt
There's a section of this store that's a real-life version of my StoryGraph list.
T Low
Cute, but didn't have the type of books we were looking for. It is definitely a local bookstore. It was very eclectic. We wanted run of the mill books, but they didn't have them. I was looking for the newest girl with the Dragon tattoo or even a Patterson, but we didn't see any. The staff seemed to be carrying on a really ridiculous conversation. One employee thought that he'd eaten meat a couple times that week and thought he had iron poisoning then asked if that was even a thing. I wanted to say, yes it is a thing but it doesn't happen in 3 days. They are so engrossed in conversation, I didn't want to ask if they had the books.
Calvin Miner
Cosy and stacked with great books. Great to take a kid. Great to browse. Employee recommendations on little notes sprinkled throughout the shelves.
Joseph Reiter

The first irl bookstore browsing like feel I’ve had during COVID! While standing outside I browsed the books in the 2 big windows, looked them up online to learn more, called to pay, then they no-contact dropped them off outside the door :) Thank you!!!!
Karen Lars
Great customer service. Too bad that Google maps said they were open, as they were closed for in'person shopping and only for online pickup and delivery. However, I told the woman who worked in the store what I was looking for and she brought out several books for me to review, apologized that the store was closed even though the door was unlocked, and returned to process my selected purchase. So it ended up being a pretty simple experience.
Bethany Wilde

For two and a half years I have been ordering all of my books from here online due to the pandemic. The other day I actually walked into the store and spent a good amount of time creating an order for my place of work. Almost every staff member came over with suggestions and asked about the book topics we were interested in, and Nadine took the time to give me a tour of the whole store, and offering suggestions as well.
The interior of the store feels really homey, and has furniture set up to sit in several corners to peruse titles before making your selections.
There was also comfort in knowing that masks were used by all of the staff in the store, and it felt safer to go into.
I would rate higher if I could. Costumer service, atmosphere, and selection were incredible.
William Raymond
