I was excited to stumble across this place while walking the city streets. I was visiting grand rapids on business and wish I had more time to explore what this place had to offer. My merchandise bag sparked numerous conversations.. both from locals and business associates. Thank you for the interesting souvenirs!

I may have found a new favorite comic book shop with this one, or at the very least, they're in my top 5 (I have a soft spot for Chicago Comics, but this is a close runner up!) Big pluses - the place was clean, well organized, well lit, with plenty of books and novelty items to browse, nice high ceilings, and pleasant shelving. I say pleasant shelving because I'm tall and the stores with short shelves down on the floor literally hurt to reach and I don't want to be crouching and snap crackle popping my knees every 2 seconds just to browse. They're also airy and open-backed, NOT the usual solid monoliths that block off space and make the room claustrophobic. It was Saturday 1/14 when I visited and I need the boss to give those employees props, because despite how busy it was, I was asked on 3 different occasions over the course of an hour if I needed help with anything by 3 different people. It was casual too, not pushy or weird, which is the perfect balance. It's a welcoming gesture and I really appreciated it. Not to mention, they were playing some good music, too. Definitely excited to visit again when I'm in the area! ♡

Pretty good little store. The workers just seemed to be congregating and in their own little world, but I like that kind of enthusiasm where it pertains to what is being sold. One of the staff did ask us if we needed any help while a friend of mine and I argued a point in D&D rules. The staff member then proceeded to help us thumb through the rule books to figure it out. Was pretty cool

This place has a wide selection of comics, collectibles, card games, and board games. This place has something for all ages as well. It's very clean and neat inside so things are easy to find. Staff are friendly and attentive. It's nice that they have outdoor board games during the summer people can play.

I was nervous to go in for my first time. I've watched Smallville, teen titans, static shock, and all those marvel movies since I was a kid. There's just a culture around comics that I haven't been a part of yet, but I listen to X-ray vision every week and it's been growing my desire to go and one of the hosts wrote a comic and so I decided to go in and purchase that comic. Then I talked to one of the cashiers and she was happy to give me a tour and spent a good deal of time pointing out and explaining different comics, graphic novels, and manga I might like based on what I told her. I think i maybe even kept her a little passed the end of her shift. I'm excited to go again next pay day!

Very large selection of new and back issue comic books/graphic novels as well as collected volumes. Great boardgame selection. Fun tchotchke items and collectibles throughout the store. Employees always friendly. An employee observed that I was looking at a particular item and made some great recommendations on series that I may enjoy. I ended up purchasing 2 collected volumes based on this recommendation that I enjoyed.

This is a really great place to shop for gifts and trinkets for the hard to shop for person and your life. Apart from all the usual things like the large selection of graphic novels and hardcovers or the wall to wall coverage with new releases of the latest issues of comic books. Certain things are broken down into sections which is nice when considering the organization and flow of the small space. Books for young adults and children are separate from all the others. As is the Manga section. There's a new release wall for anything released within that week. The only thing this place Lacks next to your average comic book store is a severe deficit of back issues. There are some, and I know most people these days myself included usually just get trades and hardcover graphic novels. Maybe I'm just an old school and miss that iconic image of the multiple rows of long boxes waiting to be rifled through and a hidden treasure found within. But, things that haven't been re released yet or perhaps are from smaller publishers that don't get reprinted in graphic novel form are always nice to find in the back issue bins at places that have them. That being said, the strongest suit that these guys have appears to be the area of the graphic novels and collectors editions or omnibus books. There are so many great choices in stock at all times. There's also a pretty decent wall for those dedicated to playing table top or board games. The staff on hand is always extremely helpful. I usually ask around if somebody on the clock has a specific interest in a genre or particular book that may be of interest, they will be more than happy to nerd out with you, which is pretty cool. Be sure to look for the staff picks. The only thing knocking them down the full star is the fact that it's downtown and there is no parking. All these social zones and the Jersey barriers don't help the situation. Apart from that though, The branding and aesthetic of the store is very inviting and fun. There's always fun music playing and you see a large cross-section of different people both customers and employees all coming together to geek out on their favorite stuff. I strongly suggest stopping in and at least getting a cool t-shirt or sticker with their logo.

Phenomenal selection! Excellent for hardbacks and collectables that goes way beyond the major comic book brands. Tons of collectable manga, including vintage collection editions, and just about every Junji Ito manga in existence. Also all the board games! Prices are exactly as marked on the books.

VoM has a great selection of trade paperbacks and games. The staff are incredibly friendly and willing to help you find books you'd be interested in by asking questions about your interests and taking the time to get it right. My wife was able to get introduced into tpbs by a helpful staff member working to find something she'd like. This is one of the best comic stores I've been in and highly recommend them to anyone seeking something extraordinary. They are always on our list visit list every time we're in Grand Rapids. Update in 2022: they are still fantastic, with staff willing to make recommendations and take time to wander the store with you to find the right books. Highly recommend for comics, manga, and trade paperbacks!

VoM is easily one of the best and most comprehensive comics shops in the area. They provide knowledge, and experience. Basically anyone you talk to has some knowledge of all of the various series and books that they provide, and are wonderful at making recommendations for new books. I've been using them as my mainstay store for years now, and they have easily the best line up. They also keep track of new publications and can give you details on coming books and story lines. It's one of my favorite places to go for comics, and when I move, I'm going to be extremely sad to not have this place anymore.

I travel across the country quite frequently, so I get to visit many Comic book stores. This was my first visit to the Vault of Midnight (excellent name, btw!). This has to be one of the best Comic book stores in the Nation. A tremendous, well organized selection of new and old books. Games, Manga and collectibles all in a clean, welcoming environment with a friendly staff, eager to help. If there is any downside, it is the lack of parking, but that is more on the city. Highly recommended for every Comic enthusiast.

I love coming here and browsing, but the staff is also amazing at recommendations. I was looking for a specific graphic novel, and they recommended another title I might like - Magic Fish - which is one of my favorite books I’ve read this year. Love this comic book store. Its Layout is easy to navigate and they have a decent amount of Graphic Novels and Omnibuses to choose from. Always on top of the new releases and a friendly staff to help you get what you need. They also carry some extras like Kidrobot blind boxes and collectibles, Pusheen, and even some nice screen printed tees to look the part. I support all my comic book carriers but I do have a special spot in my heart for this place.

Right now they are only able to have 8 customers in the store at a time, so I did wait for a few minutes. Fortunately, there is a great coffee shop across the street. I grudgingly love this place. The entire staff is always friendly and helpful. They have a fantastic selection of comics and a good selection of games.

This is a very awesome store, I've never seen so many people in a comic book store before. Not sure what event they had going on but the comic store was packed. Aside from lots and lots of comics, they had board games, manga, action figures, etc. You definitely need to check the store out. The only challenge for me was finding parking.

I discovered the original in Ann Arbor years ago and was so excited when they opened the Grand Rapids one. Best comic book shop I’ve ever been in. Nothing like a typical shop. Selection is enormous and they have subscription options. They also carry a massive selection of board games. Would totally recommend to anyone.

Well-stocked, organized, and full of rich secrets ripe for discovery, I cannot recall encountering such consistently friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic customer service at any other comics shop. I cannot recommend Vault of Midnight enough! It's a really great shop, awesome selection of comics, manga and graphic novels. They also had some really cool t-shirts, stickers, games and figures. But, we will definitely be back because the service was top notch. They were kind and helpful. My kid geeked out and started talking about Demon Slayer, and the man started talking to them about it. All in all a wonderful store, and we'll be back the next time we're in town!

In movies, comic book shops are places of wonder and magic where nerds of all stripes go to discuss their favorite heroes, debate theories about upcoming issues and generally feel welcome, all wrapped up in the thrill that Mr. Magorium brings to his Wonder Emporium. In real life, comic book shops tend to be rows of crates, shelves and walls lined with old comics packed as tightly as possible, accented with a signature scent of musty books, and nerd sweat. Plopped in some strip mall somewhere on the edge of town, most comic book shops are not exciting to go to. Fortunately for Vault of Midnight, they are a shop ripped right off the silver screen. With bright colors, wonderful art and enough games to plan the next 5 years worth of games nights, this place would make Kevin Smith proud. The staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and they have a genuine interest in whatever you are buying that day. The best service they offer is their subscription model. At no extra cost to you, they will set aside any comic book every Wednesday in a folder designated for you. Each issue you subscribe to has a 10% discount. Simply amazing. The only thing they ask is that you pick up your issues once a month. This place is truly amazing. I walked into it by accident about a year ago just as I was starting to get back into comic books again and I honestly can't believe I lived without having this place in my life before then

The staff is great and the selection is decent. They are big on pop-culture comics and media, so if you are into the current trends this is the place to go. It's a good place if you are just wanting to pick up a current issue and be out the door. They don't carry the years of back stock like some comic shops do, but if you need something that's been popular in the last year or so they should have the single issue, otherwise if it's been turned into a graphic novel they will most likely have it as their graphic novel collection is quite expansive. They also have a nice selection of board games and trinkets. If you are looking for a place to get your inner nerd going, but aren't quite a "comic book nerd", this is the place for you. If you are big into comics and the culture, most likely another shop in town is for you.

Vault of Midnight is a top-rate comics and collectibles store. The staff is knowledgeable (every single staff member) and passionate about their products. They each have their own interests and areas of expertise, making their suggestions uncannily effective. Their passion makes shopping almost as pleasurable as enjoying the products themselves. They carry an unusually large variety and number of titles. Of particular interest to me is their practice of carrying publishers and imprints outside of D.C. and Marvel (though they carry plenty of those titles as well) and their showcasing of local talents including zines. On top of single issues, they carry a massive inventory of trade paperbacks/graphic novels and hardcover omnibuses. If you have a subscription box/pull list, you receive 10% off all subscribed titles. Again, the merchandise is great, but the staff is the real feature here. They also bag every new issue with backer card as it arrives, so you know your comics are going to be mint condition from the moment you pick them up, and this includes their issues for display on the racks. A big city store with small town spirit.

I'm always impressed with the thoughtfulness that goes into all of the titles here. I brought my daughter in on Wednesday as a reward for getting her first COVID shot. There's a great representation by authors and illustrators of color, queer-affirming titles, and of course excellent toys & swag. Love this place.

The place is a little cramped, but that's because they have tons of different things to buy. It's mostly comic books, but they have a nice selection of board games as well. The staff are friendly and often are able to answer questions about different things if you ask.

Staff here are IMPECCABLE. Between the little suggestions taped to the shelves and the incredible knowledgeable employees (and amazing selection) this store really has something for every level of comic nerd and tabletop geek. Parking can sometimes be difficult but it’s downtown and totally not their fault. Shopping for comics online can sometimes be easier but you don’t get nearly the great experience that you can get here.

The worst part about this place is that when you step in there you don't realize you'll be in there for hours looking at all this place has to offer. The collection they have is massive, and the prices are fair for a locally owned comic shop. The people that work here are some of the most friendly you'll ever meet. Not to mention games, figures, etc. They must have a shrinkage problem though because I was on a motorcycle trip and walked in with my string tie back pack and was very off put by the number of can I help you's I got. Great colorful downtown comic store. Nice selection, quantities, and decent prices. Parking is tough because of the downtown location. Metered spots are slim pickings at certain times, so you might need to walk a block or two... The only real drawback is that the staff seems to be made up of trendy millennials that like to bend the spine of my comics. But overall a good option for collectors. Bonus is they have some cool events, signings, etc. More of the same and a better appreciation and training of staff toward the importance of maintaining collect-ability and quality of grade-ability of the merchandise would take this place over the top of the heap. Just a fun pop culture visit...

I moved away from Grand Rapids 10 years ago and just came back for a short visit. I happened to find this place by accident as I was just seeing what was new in town. Through the trees, I saw this place and decided to spend 5 minutes to find a parking spot. After walking in, I saw a very clean, brightly lit, well-organized store that had a lot of merchandise. Comics and board games primarily, with a great selection of both. I was quickly but comfortably approached by a friendly and knowledgeable salesperson. There were a couple cosplayers in the store, taking pictures with other customers. Neat. They had board game demos running, and helpful plaqards on products that offer a tip and a buying suggestion. I didn't buy anything on this trip but if I spend more time in GR, I'll be sure to stop back in.

Reminder before you go in: masks are required there and the capacity is 12-you might have to wait a little bit. I walked in there and one of the employees saw my haikyu shirt and showed me where the manga was and that was exactly why I came there-like I didn’t even have to ask:-) The manga selection was pretty good, I wasn’t looking for anything specific, but I found haikyu volume 1 and a lot of my hero academia. Another employee showed me the haikyu figures which I probably would’ve missed😅 Thanks for helping me out today-such great costumer service❤️

If you're looking for back issue comics, don't bother, they only have a TINY selection of silver/bronze age stuff displayed on the wall. 99% of the material in the store is new and OGN/TBP format (almost all of which is in print). If you're looking for new comics or graphic novels, they probably carry it. Would give a fifth star if they had more back issues and out of print oddities, as nearly everything in the store can be purchased on Amazon or any other comic store carrying new comics.

Oh my! If you like comics, manga, anime, superheroes, graphic novels, board games, dice... Anything else like this, Vault of Midnight is the place for you!! For starters, let's talk about the fact that they are in downtown Grand Rapids and some people are going to moan and groan about parking etc. Well, we found a nice parking ramp just around the corner from the store. I can't say for absolute certain on this, but I think they validated our ticket for us. Again, I'm totally sure on this. But there is also lots of parking along the street by the store, however it is right by the theaters and museums, so yes, it is a very busy part of downtown. Once you enter the store, you are magically taken away from the busy streets of GR and into a land of wild and crazy imagination come to life via the pages of various books and other items. It's impossible to describe all the different items inside the store as the titles there range from the very popular ones of Marvel and DC to some very lesser known (at least to me) and even some foreign ones like the manga. They even have many games and dice. The staff, of which there were lots, were very helpful. We were asked if we needed anything several times every time we've been. We've never been ignored. And they've always been super knowledgeable and friendly wherever we did need help. We did purchase their book of the month subscription plan. I cannot begin to praise this enough!!! These books we are getting aren't just a small comic every month. We are getting actual hard bound graphic novels the size of text books for some months. This plan has been an absolute delight and has opened my eyes to so much new material, so many new artists! It is well worth the money. In any event, if you are into the culture or into board or card gaming or anything else like I've mentioned, think about stopping by Vault of Midnight. It's a rare find these days. Comic shops are a dying breed, so it's nice to find one still thriving. I'm happy to lend it my support and I hope others will too!!!

Vault of Midnight is one of my favorite places to visit downtown. Just the fact that it's located in an area where landlords usually price small businesses out existence is something of a small miracle. Prior to visiting there, I had a preconceived notion that comic book people were esoteric snobs. That is so NOT the case at VOM, I am pleased to say. The staff are close by to assist you with any questions you might have, or offer you their opinions, but they don't hover. This allows you the freedom to browse their excellent and varied selection. There's subjects for all interests, from young kids' cartoons, to the most serious adult matters. I only pray that they'll have enough business to remain in that downtown locale. What gives any city it's unique vibe is the small, independently owned shops, boutiques, and galleries. So, when you visit downtown GR, check out VOM, the Art Museum, and UICA. They need and deserve your patronage.

If you've never read comic books before, the staff is friendly and informative. If you are an avid reader, then you know this place has a choice selection of comics, wall to wall. If you are not sure what to get listen to the recommendations, I've yet to be let down(Charlie, Autumnlands is brilliant).
