Reviews of Capitol Hill Books
Capitol Hill Books is a small, independently owned bookstore in Downtown Denver. The shop has a broad range of topics from general fiction, mystery, and romance to sociology, psychology, history, and LGBTQ+.
It’s tidy, well-organized, and welcoming.
This bookstore is woman-owned. It has been open for 42 years and has had three owners. Holly, the current owner, has been the proprietor of this shop for some 17 years.
Metered street parking is available.
Engaging atmosphere. There are a lot of books on different subjects and they are cheap. The bookseller is friendly and polite.
It is true that it's difficult to find classics or really interesting books among all the low quality books, especially in the field of fiction.
I was here a few weeks ago. I walked in and immediately appreciated the smell of books. The store was well organized. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. And the selection of books, journals, postcards, and stickers was plentiful. My friend and I throughly enjoyed perusing the shelves. Prices were very good, in my opinion. I picked out about 7 or 8 books and the total was less than I had anticipated. I wanted to go back but ran out of room in my luggage for books.
I loved this bookstore! There is a large variety of titles, including many vintage and rare books! Holly the owner was so sweet and the store was such a nice quiet pocket of peace in the bustling city. Highly recommend!
Capitol Hill Books may not be the oldest bookstore in Denver, but it's close. Many of its contemporaries are now gone: Together Books, Trilogy, the Bluebird Cafe, the Hue Man Bookstore, Muddy's, Murder by the Book. Step inside Capitol Hill Books, and it almost seems as though you've gone into the past... to a time when some of the older books on the shelves were new, and a time when Denver boasted many fine, quirky, and odd bookstores.
I have been coming to this delightful bookstore since the early 1982 or 1983. Capitol Hill Books first opened its doors in 1981, founded by Lois Harvey, who has since moved across town to Westside Books. Lois ran the store for many years, and then passed it on it to her friend Valarie Abney, who eventually sold it to the current owner, Holly Brooks. As might be appropriate for a used book store, Capitol Hill Books retains clues, signs, and symbols pointing to the previous owners. I enjoy noticing these callbacks whenever I visit.
Originally one small room (and an occasionally utilized and rather medieval-seeming tiny basement), the shop gradually expanded to the three rooms that greet customers now. It's a good space, and well-used. The collection has spread out accordingly, and the store aisles are easy to navigate. There are humorous and entertaining touches everywhere, such as the bloody hand just noticeable above the horror books.
Interestingly, and fittingly, the plan of these three rooms is the opposite of the old corporate bookstores, such as B. Dalton's and Borders and Waldenbooks. Those stores always carried the most popular titles in the back of the store, guiding customers through the sections that they otherwise might skip. At Capitol Hill Books, the popular fiction section is in the first room, right there near the entrance; the second room contains kids' books and metaphysics and other cool, strange books; the third and last room is for history, culture, and social studies. A little staid, if you ask me. I don't spend much time in the third room, but I always check it out just in case.
There are books of all kinds at this store, particularly my favorites - science fiction, mystery, classic literature, drama, poetry. There are even a few comics! The children's books are well-cultivated. There is one large and perhaps typically imposing bookcase that is filled with very expensive collector's items. Next to that, there's a shelf featuring inexpensive local chapbooks and zines.
The store has always had a great range of strange and wonderful postcards, under all its owners, and the Wall of Ephemera is on its way to becoming a local legend. This is a display of interesting notes and other compelling items found within the pages of books brought in for trade. That's worth visiting just in itself. But you'll always find one or two books to buy, too. Or more! That's how it is with me. Many of the best books in my own library at home have come from Capitol Hill Books.
Holly is always an absolute delight! And the bookstore itself isn't half bad either. 💖
This is a place where one can come to ground the soul. There are incredible books of every genre, along with knowledgeable staff to help find something special.
A true gem of Denver.
One of my absolute favorite book stores in the Denver area, I wish I could come in more often but my husband's wallet would cry too much 🤣 Love the building (learned it was built in the early 1900s, awesome), the employees are always more than willing to help out, and the atmosphere is always welcoming. Thrilled to see it survived pandemic.
Wonderful experience was welcomed in and asked what I was looking for. The lady brought me right to the series I was looking for. Shared with me which book was her favorite of the series and was on point as that was the next book I needed to read.
They have an awesome collection of books! We found several selections to purchase!
It is a staple of capital hill but the hardback selection is not as good as it used to be and there are more bookstores to choose from still I like it being a survivor of the hill and Colfax.
Best experience ever. Sweet lady at the register and friendly staff. Awesome selection. Will be going back after breakfast.
The idea of buying books in person seems to be going extinct, but this classic used book store stays soulfully in tact right at the heart of Denver. Situated across from the Capitol Building in downtown, this book shop always has that old paperback smell and a vintage vibe that makes walking through the doors like a shift in time-before laptops and cellphones were all we read. The staff is always interesting to converse with and I love stopping in to just say hello.
Such a wonderful book shop.
I wandered in here one day while walking around the city and I can honestly say that it is the quintessential "local book shop". The shelves are covered with handmade signs detailing the books that line them. There are lots of little hidden notes or messages ticked in and around the bookcases making it a pleasure to wander the aisles while taking it all in.
I'll happily be back to pick something up.
There is something nostalgic and heartwarming when you catch a whiff of old books and the words they speak, yet aren't spoken. This little shop of books was pleasant to be in. Paperback and hardbacks of all types and genres. Can't find what you're looking for? The precious lady at the desk was well versed around this maze of wonder. A must stop for anyone who enjoys written art.
One of my favorite book shop worldwide, friendly stuff big variety of good books
Charming doesn't begin to describe this place. Also, unapologetically used, "dropped book in a bath" , put it on the shelf, someone will buy it ! Love it.
I went in today and found a wonderful book thanks to the employee suggestion bookmarks they write up! I had no idea they were hit by a truck two days earlier... I didn’t notice the damage coming in. It’s amazing how fast they have gotten on repairing the damage. I’m so glad they exist and I enjoy their selections. I hope they are able to recover from the damage done. Support local bookstores, especially this one! 💕
Even though it has expanded over the years, this is one those special places in Denver that still takes me back in time. I hope it lives on and on.
Every time I go to a new city i look for a used book store and see if i can find some classics I don’t want to pay a lot of money for. I found something on my reading list for $6 and was very pleased. This store met my expectations. Sadly, no Bukowski books when I went that day 😂 …
This store has a great selection of used books and is one of my favorite bookstores in Denver!
There are a ton of options and there are books from all different genres. On one of the shelves there are some books that are recommended by the staff, and the fun part is that they all wrote a little blurbs about why they chose each book. It's a nice touch.
Lots of books. Fair prices. A joy to browse around.
Such a fun local bookstore. Many used books at great prices! Staff was friendly and helpful.
Such a peaceful atmosphere, and a great selection of books! Highly recommend for book lovers.
I love popping into this store to browse sometimes when I’m passing by. The woman who runs/owns (?) this place is so kind and you can tell that she loves books! Great shop to look for old paperback fantasy and science fiction and everything is so fairly priced. Support this bookstore and never let it die!!!
A really nice bookstore full of used and cheap books. I could find what I wanted to get. The owners seem good people and it was nice to talk with them!
I loved this place! So many used books and everything was well organized. I will return when I'm back in Colorado.
While waiting for an appointment. I decided to roam around the neighborhood. I accidentally came across this place and am I glad that I did. This is a very nice bookstore with a good selection very organized and a very nice lady behind the counter. I found a few good books at good prices. I will be back and I encourage you to go and visit.
Amazing collection of books. More than reasonably priced. There aren't a lot of 1st editions but they still have some amazing buys! They have the store set up well too. Small store, very small and I didnt see a public restroom but when do you in Denver? The staff was friendly and not at all pushy! If you like old books this is your store.
It was so good to go into this store that feels like home after all of these months. They are great about finding the books you want and letting you know they are available. Like all of our favorites, they need our support!
Popped by here last week when I was waiting for my name to be called at a restaurant around the block. It is such a delightful bookstore. The woman working was so friendly and very helpful directing me to the different sections I was looking for. They have a great selection of books, of which I found several that I wanted to purchase. Just a really lovely place to explore and find a book.
I'm normally an Amazon or Barnes & Noble buyer, but I decided to check this place out to help support locally and see what I could find. To my surprise, I found a book that I've been wanting that was released less than a year ago! And it was a hardback for only $5! I also found a book from a series I really enjoy and bought that for a super low price too. Definitely will be returning- love that they have an online database that they/you can check to see what they have.
The store itself is really pretty great. Most of the times I've come there I've left with what I came looking for and then some. As some other reviewers mention, the prices are marginally higher than at other used book stores but given the costs that probably go into having a prime location like this it makes perfect sense.
The only caveat is that I had a really strange interaction with the person behind the counter. I had picked out a book that cost $9.50ish, I think. It turned out that this was the price before sales tax and I owed something like, let's say, $10.25. At the moment I only had a $10 bill and I asked if it would be possible for me to only pay $10. I meant nothing offensive but offense was apparently taken, "do you go to King Soopers and try to haggle there?" the woman behind the counter asked. I asked the friend whom I was with for the change I needed but the woman told me something to the effect of "I don't need your money" and asked us to leave. I found this strange and haven't been back since.
But it's a very good store and I put some of the responsibility on my not knowing the unwritten etiquette of this and maybe other used book stores. Still, I don't think I should have been thrown out.
Nice staff, beautiful books!
A great used book store with nice folks working there! I walked in looking for some interesting poetry and walked out with 3 books at a great value! The store has a great vibe and in a cool location. You can grab a great book and walk right down to Tom's Diner to sip coffee and read.
I was visiting Denver in October 2019 and I like wandering around with no goal and i ended up in this cosy, beautiful and peculiar bookstore.. the owner was really gentle and I got really got vibes of the place. I highly recommend to drop yourself in their books and enjoy the atmosphere there
LOVE this bookstore. Great selections, great prices, staff was very friendly.
I love this bookstore and always try to make a point of visiting when I'm in the area. I can always find something to take home, plus their prices are reasonable. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this shop if you are looking for something very specific but it is great for browsing.
My family loves Capital Hill books. Quaint, local shop. They have a small kids section for my daughter and offer really reasonable prices/credit for used books.
Great shop in the neighborhood. Huge selection and really helpful people that are working there. Have got a couple great antique books and countless other books. Highly recommend!
Cute little bookstore. Alas, I got here just before it was closing, so I didn't get to spend more than 10 minutes here -- which of course is preposterous for a bookstore hehe. They had a decent selection of books for a small place. Their prices seemed a little high, but I've witnessed this in many classic bookstores -- so I've learned to accept this. Recommend checking it out.
Great bookstore with a wide array of splendid books, good prices and friendly employees.
I love this little place!! My girlfriend just brought me here and I fell in love! I found every little book I could ever need! The owner was so nice and found an amazing book that she knew I would love!!
Wonderful used bookstore. There really is something for everyone there. They do a selection of new books as well. Absolutely worth a visit for any bibliophile.
Great spot, sweet and helpful folks working here
Let me tell you I love this little book store I go all the time. The prices are great and the selection is even better. The old school book stores are a dying breed, this place truly is a diamond in the rough
I traded in a stack of books and walked away with a new humor read I can’t put down. The staff was kind, laughed with me and very helpful. This is the kind of place you want to curl up with a book and sit in a corner for hours. Thanks Cap Hill Books!
I thrive in book stores - every book has its charms for me. What I liked about this place is the atmosphere. Quiet and books are so cutely arranged by different sections of interest! I managed to find 3 used mysteries and after spending some time reading bits of them - paid for them and took them home with me.
I love this little book shop! It has a great section on local specific books. I love when books stores have reasonable prices and display books they would recommend, especially with little notes about the books!
Love this store! Well organized and lots of neat books to look at it.
I have been going here for over 30 years with consistent exceptional Service, as well as a wonderful plethora of great books. It is located right across from the capital so easy to get to anytime you're downtown. I have always appreciated that the service has been exceptional for decades period a must stop anytime you're in Denver!
The staff is super knowledgeable and if you take your time, you will find some real treasures. Great sections dedicated to Denver and Colfax history. Large metaphysical book section. Big deals on mystery novels and a little bit of every genre you can think of.
I LOVE this bookstore. It is all used books for great prices. The owner and operator is a very sweet woman who is happy to help however possible!
Wonderful store. Old books, rare books, new books, comic books. You can find so many awesome things here at ridiculously low prices. Please show them love!
Capitol Hill books is great! I ordered online and they were very communicative when putting it together and had it ready when I needed it. The staff Is friendly and helpful. Thank you!
Fairly limited selection with all their used books being more of expensive than other used books I've shopped. Some books can be purchased new for the same price. Fun to look around, but there are way better options for shopping for books.
Capitol Hill Books has been one of the top three bookstores in Denver for over 30 years. Exceptional selection and prices, cozy historical ambience, and staff non-pareil who treat your every inquiry with gentle, informed resourcefulness. Good thing they don't serve tea, or no one would ever leave.
Pretty great selection, however most everything is in thrift store condition (stains, bent covers and pages, etc), which would be fine if they weren't asking 2 to 3 times what the books are worth. Also the bedredlocked girl behind the register wasn't very helpful.
Incredible selection. Good prices and a friendly staff. Can wait to explore more in depth.
Good prices, interesting assortment of Staff Picks
This is a wonderful local bookstore, the kind that makes you want to explore and see what they have. Very friendly staff, fun reviews posted throughout the store.
Free your mind during Times of distress and uncertainty.Put down the Smartphone, get away from the Computer-monitor and gather Books of your own interest. At this Bookstore, that's been the same location since the prehistoric Ages!!
A great small local bookstore with lots of good reading. Lovely owner who is helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable
Great little bookstore near the Capitol Hill. Huge selection with tall bookshelves and plenty of choices for the little ones. We spent a lot of time navigating the labyrinth of shelves featuring just about every genre you can imagine!

Such a comfortable place! It felt like home. There are funny and interesting displays and catagories. Staff is super helpful. This was a great experience and I wish I lived closer!
The lady behind the counter was very kind and directed me to genres I was interested in. The best part about this place is that there’s chairs scattered throughout the stacks so you can sit and read a few pages before buying.

I love this Denver staple. It's cozy with plenty of chairs and browser day away. The staff is friendly the store is nicely stocked with the old & new.
You can trade old books for credit, and the owner, who's owned it for 19 years, is celebrating the store's 40th anniversary tomorrow!
