Reviews of Phil's Bike Shop
Erin Hebert
Extremely knowledgeable and eager to impart knowledge. Came in with the hope that he might have a secondhand bike that would suit my huge frame and match the style of my wife's so that we could ride together. He then instructed me to take it out for a spin after quickly explaining the bike's fundamentals and why it was suitable for the use I had mentioned. SOLD! In addition, he had a helmet in my size (one size does NOT fit everyone!). Explanation of the services offered with the purchase. He did not have the type of hitch rack I desired, but his advice on brands was quite helpful. Extremely satisfied with Phil and his enterprise.

Easy access off SW 320th in Federal Way, plenty of parking in the Twin Lakes Plaza. You'll recognize it by the sign as well as the funky door with bike gear design on it.
It's a one man operation with a lot of used bikes, accessories and of course advice! Today we got a nice padded bike seat to replace a crummy one on a bike we've had for a while. Decent prices, no hassles, and easy e-receipt. A good little shop.

I've bought two used mountain bikes there. They were good quality bikes and I rode the first one into the ground and I'm doing my level best to do the same to the second. PBS is always there for service and good advice.

My husband and I visited Phil's Bike shop for the first time on Saturday. This shop was recommended to us by a friend. When we arrived to the shop there was some other people looking at bikes so we waited only a few minutes before Seth approached us and asked how he could help. We told him what we were looking for and he recommended a Norco model that fit our needs. He quickly took the bikes we thought we would like to try off the rack and gave us helmets to go for a spin in the parking lot. While we were testing the bike out, the store became very busy as several more people arrived. My husband and I decided to purchase the bikes and through all the busyness Seth did not miss a beat in attending to us. We were able to come back to the store in about an hour and pick up the bikes after they were adjusted, set up and fenders added. The overall experience was fantastic!! We felt like the localness of the store and great service was well worth the effort over just getting online or going to a box store to buy and not really being certain we bought the right bikes. We also feel very confident that if we need some help or further adjustments we will get looked after. Thank you Seth - we went out for a ride this morning and so far we LOVE our new bikes.

Great experience! The person working let me ride the bike I was interested in around the parking lot to make sure I liked it. So glad we stopped in because I love the yellow mountain bike I purchased.
The shop sells used bikes and also does repairs.
Jason Covey
store owner was very helpful & knowledgeable.. will definitely return for any future bike needs

Great service, came here to get my suspension fork swapped out for a new one. Phil quickly got to the point, gave me an estimated time when I could pick up the bike and gave me a price. He even ended up fixing my front brake. Great guy 100% recommend coming here. Despite what some of these reviews say, Phil is a good man who does good work.

Extremely knowledgeable and willing to share information. Came in on the chance he may have a used bike to fit my large frame and match the style of my wife's for us to ride together. By luck there was such a bike there and he quickly explained the basics and why it would fit the usage I had described and told me to take it out for a spin. SOLD! Not only that but he had a helmet to fit me (One size does NOT fit all!). Explained the services he offers with the purchase thoroughly. He did not have the type of hitch rack I wanted but shared his thoughts on brands which was a great help. Very pleased with Phil and his business.

Been taking my bikes to Phil since I really started getting into riding 20 years ago. Always a good experience. He really knows his stuff and is willing to impart that knowledge if you are open to listening. I now live in Ravensdale and, there are quite a number of bike shops that are closer to me. However, in my opinion, Phil is the best and I know my bike is in good hands. Why mess with success?
Rebin Ali
Phil is an amazing guy and knows everything there is about bikes! My friend and I took our bikes in before doing a long bike tour and he made lots of adjustments on our bikes and gave us lots of great tips on our trip. Can’t wait to visit him again.
Terri Schiel Reade
A couple years back we bought our kids bikes for Christmas. Phil took the time to help fit the kids for great used bikes. We have visited him for repairs and we are so blessed to have Phil right in Federal Way. We just went back to get another bike and I am continually impressed with his patience with customers that treat him with little respect. He is a bike genius and if you just took a deep breath and are patient there is so much you can learn from Phil. He is a one man show but truly cares about you and the bike you are riding. Thanks Phil for everything!! You are the number bike shop in our family!!
Tyler Andrews
Great service! Went into the shop not knowing much on bikes and left the same day learning the appropriate size of frame for me, how to remove the front wheel and much more. The prices are very reasonable and if buying a bike, you even get a free water bottle holder. I'm looking at some of these reviews and notice that some people have thin skin... Phil's a nice guy and will get the job done.
Josiah Allen
Great Service!
Looking through the reviews I see that some people may have had a "negative" experience. The problem is there are not used to working with an expert. Most Retail bike shops are gonna have sales people who don't know what they are talking about. They just know how to "sell". Phil actually knows his product and is going to give you his honest opinion. If you want to talk to a salesperson go to a car dealership they have plenty of people there who have no clue about the product they are selling you. But they will try to make you feel good in hopes you will buy a car. If you want an expert opinion, whether you need servicing on your current bike or want to purchase a new bike, go see Phil! Don't change Phil. You can't please everyone...haha.

I have been taking my bikes to Phil for years. Out of his modest shop he can provide everything for a new rider and up; road bike and trail bike, his walls are covered with anything you need. He revived my 1984 Peugeot Canyon Express when I thought it was ready for scrap. We have bought my kid's school bikes from Phil's Bike Shop. For the last five years he and his crew have kept my GT road bike ride ready and safe. Phil is serious about cycling. People mistake his sober attitude as being rude. Phil has never tried to sell me anything I didn't need for my bike and he is quite fair in his charges. He is as honest as they get. Charismatic? No, but a great mechanic at fair prices. I trust Phil and his crew. They have never given me any reason to do otherwise.
Sarah Furry
This place is awesome! My husband got himself a quality used bike from Phil, then brought me back there later to get one for myself. I now have my first road bike. I wish I could remember his name, but the other gentleman that works at Phil's was equally as knowledgeable, kind, courteous, and patient. They are both very honest and helpful. We have been back a couple more times since then and will continue to go there with any maintenance or purchasing needs.

I called Phil regarding a problem I had with my derailer on a recent ride. On the phone he was to the point, come in so I can see it and we'll talk about what to do next. I could tell he was busy, but was surprised that he would see a same-day appointment because every other bike shop I talked to told me I would have to wait two weeks.
When I brought the bike in he stopped the work he was doing (we run the business and does the work) to talk with me and understand what was going on with the bike. I requested a quick turn-around because I was due to to participate in Obliteride in the coming days (and didn't think it was possible), but he told me he could accommodate and turned it around in a few hours! I was very happy with the work that he did, the time he spend on the bike, and the care he had for my experience. He also suggested some things that we may want to fix down the road, but was not in the least pressuring me to do it now. I would highly recommend you stop by and see Phil for your bike repair needs.
Patric Rogers
Nice shop. Friendly, knowledgeable, zero pressure staff. Good inventory - I'm a Big Guy and I just walked in the door and Garret gave me three bikes to try out. (I tried several big box stores and shopping online, and no one had anything in stock to fit me, so I thought maybe Phil's would have one bike, if I was lucky - they had 3.)
Garret answered all my questions about the pros and cons of each, and I took one home, no muss, no fuss.
Beth Wickersham Burrus
Contacted Phil's this morning as they were opening to yet another quarantine influx of customer's needing their help. We were searching for training wheels to add to a foster child's donated bike that is being delivered today. Although Phil's already had a full day on the books, they briefly stepped away and immediately dealt with this need for our community. Not only did they sell us a set of training wheels, they correctly advised that stock bikes needed a larger axle in order to fit training wheels. We were asked to remove the rear wheel and come immediately to the store. Within minutes, they had installed a new axle, charging us only for the part and donating their time/labor. We are beyond grateful for their big hearts and their contribution to our community and our kids. We will go nowhere else in the future for all our bike needs - neither should you. THANK YOU
Zach Greenside
No idea what all the other reviews are talking about. Customer service in here has been nothing but stellar. Phil knows what he's doing, and will help you make your purchase or fix your bicycle in fantastic fashion. There is no better bike shop in the Federal Way area, and I'd go so far as to say there's no better bike shop in the Puget Sound! Extremely knowledgeable bike shop, the owner (Phil) is fantastic and easy to work with, knows exactly what you're looking for, and is more than happy to help you purchase a new or used bike, or tune up and fix your bike.
We have purchased all of our recent bicycles from Phil's South Side Cyclery, as well as all of our accessories and tune ups, and I will not go anywhere else with our cycling needs!
Thank you for being the best of the best!
Pat O'Meara
Phil did a wonderful job on my son’s bike. Phil did a minor repair and a tune-up on the bike and my son said it has never run smoother or quieter. Phil is very knowledgeable and easy to work with. Highly recommended.
Nora Brannon
My husband and I have been looking for an entry level mountain bike for me and after hours of driving to several big bike stores and horrible customer service we stopped at Phil's Bike Shop 30 minutes before closing. I don't know the name of the guy who helped us, I know it was not the owner, but he was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. He made us feel welcome even with several other customers around and even though he did not have what we were looking for at the price we wanted he gave us several options that we are looking into right now. Thank you for restoring my faith in customer service and I'm sure we will be back!
Aaron Drake
Thank you Phil for the terrific tune up. I appreciate the quality and workmanship. I also appreciated how quickly you responded to my initial inquiry about an appointment and were able to work me in within days. Very reasonable rates as well. You've got a terrific shop there. Aaron

I came in not knowing a whole lot about what I really needed. Phil spent plenty of time asking questions about what I would be using a bike for and showing me my options. The prices were fair, and one could find a bike here ranging from a few hundred to over a thousand dollars depending on your needs.
Phil had several well-kept used bikes available, though I was primarily interested in something new. After testing out and choosing a bike, he also allowed me to swap out the saddle that it came with for something more fitting me. I will certainly be back for any parts or repairs I need in the future.

Very nice bicycle shop. It's smaller than the two main Tacoma shops, but they have very nice, top of the line used bikes for a very reasonable price.
I bought a new Norco, which the salesman, Seth, was very knowledgeable about, the tuning of the bike is spot on.
I also bought a used women's Trek from them, and its beautiful, it looks brand new, I paid $250 for a $500 bike.
There was no high pressure at all. Seth actually introduced lower priced bikes before I decided on a new one for myself and a quality used one for my girlfriend.
I had a very good experience and am very happy with both bicycles.
Britani Bradford
Phil is a straight shooter, you won't get any beating around the bush with this guy. He will examine your bike 100% to let you know what needs to be done for safe riding. With that being said you don't have to worry about a slimy sales person trying to upsell you on s**t you dont need. Phils has reasonably priced gear and gently used bikes, however if you want anything new phil can put in an order, per request. Keep in mind it's a self own shop so don't go in expecting a biking class 101 on every, do your research prior. Ain't nobody got time for 100 questions.
Michael Rockets
I had Phil pack a bike for me and label it for pick up from FedEx. This was a very big help because I live in California and I purchased the bike from a private seller in Washington. Phil did the packing himself and did a stellar job. This particular bike was very important to me and the fact that it is 102 years old presented a real challenge. It arrived in perfect condition and the care he took with it was obvious. His communication with me all through the process was also very helpful. I couldn't have left it in more capable hands.
Thank you Phil !!!

Got my bike fixed quickly, with what I needed done within a day of dropping it off at a reasonable cost . The owner, Phil is very knowledgable, also often direct to the point, which I appreciate, as I am that way. Maybe some of the other reviewers see this as being short? I have used this shop for many years, and have always had a good experience.
Kim Myers
Phil and his crew know their stuff about bikes. I bought my bike from them, and they have been wonderful in keeping it well maintained. They also maintained my old bike before I got my new one. Their prices are fair and their products top-notch. I fully recommend them!
Jesse Maris
Fortunate to know a mechanic like Phil, he knows what he is doing and is passionate about cycling. During this pandemic he is very busy trying to fix bikes just like every other bike shop, so he doesn't have time to sit around and explain basic cycling info. However when the pandemic is over and things slow down, I know he would love to sit around and discuss bikes.
Rick Gilbert
Prompt, courteous, helpful tips & reasonable prices, both for my current touring bike and the clunker Huffy that I originally used as a commuter. I never feel that I'm getting 'upsold' something that I don't need. I've bought wheels, bottom brackets, chains, tubes, gels & electrolytes, and had tune-ups & cables replaced. Never had an issue with a service, repair, or a part from Phil's in 4 years. They're aware that I depend on my bike for daily commuting, and I can usually usually ride in and get items fixed while I wait. For more involved repairs (new cables & housings, wheels bearing service), they worked with me to schedule the work to minimize my downtime.
Reed
I've been coming to Phil's for years, and finally wanted to give the respect they've earned through a review; I don't come in on the most consistent schedule, usually every few months, sometimes more frequently. But it's always quick, responsive service, be it a bigger piece of maintenance or a quick check in. Recommended- know what you want when you go in, and you'll be helped out just fine.
Michael Murray
Phil is great he clearly communicates what needs to be done, the cost, and his completion time. I find him to be honest, fair, and on time. His work is excellent. I have been using Phil's for about 15 years

I have trusted Phil with intermediate and advanced bicycle maintenance since April 2005.
Here are some facts:
I did not know Phil when I first went to his bicycle shop.
He did regular maintenance on a bicycle that I had “remodeled”, and was always patient with my questions about maintenance and improvements.
I asked Phil to order a bicycle (a Surly Long-haul Trucker) for my wife. Phil did not carry this brand (Surly), but he was happy to order the bicycle and assemble it for a modest fee. Despite that fact that Phil did not stock this brand, he applied his same maintenance policy to the bicycle.
Phil has built two custom bicycles for me using Rivendell and Lynskey frames. Phil spent time investigating parts on the internet with me, made numerous suggestions, and compiled a budget for each bicycle. When researching titanium frames, he called two manufacturers (on his own initiative) to ask them questions about their products. I ordered all of the parts through Phil, and he built both bicycles for free. He continues to do maintenance on both bicycles. Often, Phil will do some minor maintenance and not charge me anything.
In the last 11 ½ years, I have been in Phil’s shop dozens of times and I have seen him interact with many people.
My advice to potential customers:
Phil has a smaller shop and, consequently, a reduced amount of staff than bigger stores. Frequently, Phil is the only one at his shop. As a result, sometimes a line exists. For example, I went to Phil's shop on June 27th, 2016, at 5 PM and six people were in line. Within 30 minutes, he identified the issue with my bicycle and had me out the door.
My recommendation is to be patient. If you are, you will benefit from Phil’s patience and his expertise, and he will do a great job handling your bicycle needs at very fair prices.

I brought a bike to Phil's Bike Shop to have it tuned up. The bike was a gift to me from my company for many years of service. I roughly assembled it and brought it to the shop. The bike is not the quality of those sold at Phil's, however it was treated well and returned to me when promised and in excellent condition. On my second visit to the shop there were a few people in line, however we were greeted warmly, and found the proprietor to be courteous and offering good service to each customer. We had to wait a few minutes until were were served. Every question asked, was answered while we waited our turn. The few interactions I have had tell me these guys are passionate about their work, are knowledgeable and are able to meet my needs. I will be returning soon to purchase a bike, possibly the "29" or one of the XFR or VFR series from Norco. Whatever it is, I am certain I will be satisfied. Looking forward to my next visit.
Thanks,
Lloyd Johnnson

I went there to get the brakes fixed on my bike and he said it would cost $65, but he also told me I had a really cheap bike ( it was originally $200) . The man was really rude to me about it and said it was worth $5-$ 10. The bikes he sold were overpriced too. When it comes to bikes it pays to shop around, and I'm shopping elsewhere.
Update : I appreciate your reply and you made a lot of good points. I have not shopped around for bikes at that point yet, and you are right $185 for that particular bike is fair.
Carlo Del Carmen
I read all the reviews prior to going to Phil's with my wife and I knew what to expect and as it turns out, he's a no bullshit, direct to the point guy who's got alot of things to do around the shop like repairing bikes that have deadlines and doesn't have the time to listen to the bikes youve had as a child or if your cat died so I understand the general impression that he's not very friendly. He answers your questions and scoots to the back to get on with his work while you contemplate on your purchase.
He's quite intense (as is the case with most artisans) with the work at hand and distractions mean a delay on someone else's ride. Keep in mind he's running a bike repair shop and not a psychology clinic. I think we get along because I'm a silent guy who doesn't flood him with useless stories and know what i need and pay for it.
The guy does know his bikes (excellent knowledge and mechanical skills) and his prices are very fair. Sometimes even cheaper than online stuff. I got my 86 Miyata beater klunker from him the other week and I couldn't be happier.
Overall, I prefer supporting local bike shops like Phil's because they're not trying to rip you off, they're just trying to stay in business.
Jeff Bellinghausen
My bike started shifting poorly on my commute into work and Phil worked me into his schedule, fixed the problem and had me back on the road by the end of my work day even though he is not my regular bike shop. Fantastic customer service at a reasonable price. Thank you Phil
Brett Roberts
Outstanding small bicycle shop. Excellent selection of pre-owned bikes at a fair price. Phil is an excellent mechanic, he's not there to talk.
Brian Kolbrek
I called Phil's bike shop today and spoke to Phil about a bike that I had purchased in SoCal off Craigslist that had their sticker on it. I wanted to make sure that it wasn't stolen. Phil remembered the bike and said that a few of them were painted the same way that mine was. He assured me that he wasn't looking for this bike. If I'm ever around his shop I will certainly stop in and buy something.
Benjamin Mader
Let me tell you about my HORRIBLE experience at Phil's Bike Shop...
Okay, now my Horrible story.... I stopped in a few weeks ago, just so I could look around. I walked in and within 30 seconds I was greeted by Seth. He asked what I was looking for, and I explained to him that I'd like to get back into shape.
At 33 years old, I need to stop gaming and focus on my health. He took me over to a sweet Norco Storm bike for $650. Of course I'm alarmed by the price, but I know you get what you pay for, and I'm tired of buying bikes from retail stores, and having them break down, or chain pop up shifting gears.
Seth understood completely, and didn't try to sell me the bike. He knew the price alarmed me. Instead, He said if i do change my mind to come back. "We'll have you ride a few around and find something comfortable for you". I shook his hand, and left. So horrible right?
I slept on it for a few weeks and went back... I wanted a bike, but not from Walmart, or Fred Meyers..
I drove up and right off the bat I see kids outside riding bikes, having a good time. That put an instant smile on as I parked and walked inside. I was approached by Seth and he remembered who I was. I told him I was here to try them out. "Sure no problem" he said. He grabbed a helmet for me to wear while I rode the bikes. So horrible right?
I rode one bike... While I was riding this bike I was trusted riding around the yard and buildings, and my safety was their number one concern. After riding around for a few minutes I brought it back inside to Seth and told him I'd be back in a bit to buy it. He took it in the back and said he'd give a once over before I got back with a vehicle. So Horrible...
I came back, and bike looked brand new, granted it was $700 bucks more than I wanted to spend, but it's well worth the price. I've rode it a few times since Saturday and I love it. I definitely recommend this place, especially if you want a horribly great experience!
I don't understand how there could be any bad reviews about this place. Just don't bring you $40 bike for repairs maybe? Price is worth their service.
Mike Gorrie
Just bought a sweet used lavender beach cruiser. His prices are reasonable, he is knowledgeable and gives you the facts you need to know.
Don't believe the haters; Phil is friendly and Phil gets the job done.
Caleb Kamberger
The Bike I got here Would Of been Atleast 300$ And I got the bike for just 165$, it has 7 gears and top speed is atleast 25mph on a flat road, I Feel alive everytime I ride it. He even threw in a FREE helmet that would of been 15$ extra. He let me Ride the bike around the lot Even though it was my first time there he trusted me as soon as I walked in. Great Bike shop and low prices for on brand bikes. No Walmart or Fredy Bikes can compare, Customer Service Made me wanna go back just to Chat.
Superior Lock Services
Phil's Bike Shop... Phil is great! Phil is extremely knowledgable, great prices, and top notch customer service. Of you ever need a tune up or repair I highly suggest taking your bike to Phil!
Goose fs
100% five star place, I learn something new every time I go. Phil not only fixes things fast, but also tells you why something is happening often does not charge extra for fast labor. Great place.
Vaughan Hensley
They made speedy work of a flat tire and got it changed out in minutes. I may have caught them on a slow day but I applaud their sense of urgency! Found a flat this morning, took it in at lunch, and I'm going to be riding this afternoon! Thank you!!
Howard Ferguson
I came in needing some minor repair, traveling from out of town and was taken care of quickly, explaining everything that they though needed to be done. Prices were very reasonable and the staff was very knowledgeable. Not a super large shop, but they had all the basic needs for road and mountain bikes.
Franco J
Phil comes off as a little rough when you first come in (maybe that's from years of customer service, I've been going to this shop since I was a child) but he is very knowledgeable and I have reicived nothing but tremendous mechanical work and knowledge from Phil or the other workers in the shop.
Stacy Kohl
As an avid cyclist and owner of several bikes. Phils has been my shop for maintenance for a good 3 years now and I won't go anywhere else for repairs.
Patrick McCabe
I first went to Phil's because he was a close local bike shop. I go back to Phil's because he knows what he is talking about, knows what he is doing, and gives you the answer straight and to the point. I like that. I don't need a hug every time I go to a bike shop; I need help and answers... that is what Phil is great at!
Dan Sjolseth
Great service and helpful with good biking locations to try. His used bike inventory is quite good and reasonable prices. He's my go to persin6 for my MTB maintenance.
Chris Santamour
This bike shop is like the bike shops when I was a kid who wanted to go back the service was awesome he explained everything and also had all the parts to take care of my bike this guy knows what he's doing I would recommend this shop to anybody that has a two-wheeled bicycle or even a three wheeler
Celeste B. T.
Phil was professional, informative, and finished my repairs sooner than expected. The repairs were also reasonably priced. Overall a great experience.
Hussein Al Musawi
Great bike shop changed tube for $5 is a steal compared to my other bike shop awesome people kind and showed me how to change the tube will definitely come back again to do any more services
Isaac Sato
Awesome service! Friendly people! My friend and I recently needed our basketballs pumped up and the man there was very helpful. I will definitely encourage my biking friends to come here.
Gianpaolo Boccato
Great repairs and honest estimates. Love seeing a bike shop focused on repairs and not just trying to sell you a new and expensive bike.
David Buchanan
In the age of big box taking over its refreshing to have a small shop around. Phil was honest, knowledgeable and less expensive than the big corporate stores.
Igor Berezin
Never been there. But from what the owner said repeatedly in every post that he works alone with no help from anyone. So expect lower than average attitude and stress level as well as noncompetitive pricing.
Dale Chalfant
I have bought new bikes from Phil's and now I have bought used. Phil is always willing to help answer any questions.
Paul Borth
Best bike teapair shop in the south sound. Phil has been keeping my bikes rolling for years.
