Reviews of Montlake Bicycle Shop

Best experience I've had with bike shops in Seattle. Everyone was knowledgeable, respectful and no one misled me by trying to sell more than I needed (which unfortunately does happen).
Even when I have other bike shops closer to where I live, I make it a point to bring my electric bike to Montlake because they're great and I recommend them to all my friends when I have the chance!

Mike and Gary are legit. They're knowledgeable, and not pushy - they want what's best for their customers. First you'll wanna buy a bike from them, then you'll wanna drink beers with them.

Needed a fairly simple tune up. My bike was serviced quite quickly and I was back on my bike in a few days.
Eric Stobin
no pressure salespeople, very helpful and informative--today I had a great experience with Gary, Joe and Brooke, all who were very friendly and helpful while exploring options for me to purchase a bicycle and some accessories. I did not find them pushy at all to make a quick sale. My bike was tuned up and it felt amazing right away, much better than before. very fast turnaround time on the bike service and was a great value--they did not rush to get it done but they took their time to get it done right....this place seems to have much better mechanics than most and I will definitely be back....great assortment of commuter, ebikes, gravel, road and mountain bikes here, folding bikes, too....very friendly staff with great selection, not the typical same stuff that I see at all the boring Trek corporate storesthis place has soul and the people really care!

AMAZING service! My bike was stolen over a year ago and I thought it was long gone. Montlake called me (even once I had moved halfway across the country) a couple of months ago when they identified my bike from a stolen bike registry. They called me and helped me manage the shipping entirely remotely. I am so grateful for this team. I don't live in Seattle anymore, but if I ever return there's no question this is the bike shop I'd make my home shop.
Ian Crawford
Amazing employees, very understanding and easy to talk to. I have really enjoyed my experience purchasing a bike here!

Amazing sales personnel! I tried 2 ebikes and ended up buying one that fit my needs. I stayed in their shop for almost 2 hours through the entire process of choosing a lightweight but less powerful ebike or a heavy but powerful (almost scooter-like) ebike. It was a hard decision for me as I did not have 5 grand to spend on an ebike that I have to ship all the way to FL after 3 months. I was mostly going to use the bike for local commute and errands during my stay in Seattle. Honestly, the staff never pressured me. Never made me feel like I was "poor" for getting a lower priced ebike. Helped me throughout the experience, and asked me what I want. Even if I wanted the "heavy but powerful" bike through my previous research (stats on paper looks so great!), one of their staff suggested I try the "lightweight" one, and that's actually what I bought. It just fit me so well, and I can't be happier with my purchase! Sometimes, being perfect on paper isn't what you need in reality (same with relationships lol).
This shop will be also be helping me box up the box and shipping it when the time comes. They are very realistic and will manage your expectations upfront, will never try to upsell you something that doesn't fit your needs. They are also upfront with costs. All in all, this is honestly the most perfect retail experience I ever had. I needed something, they provided it without any expectations of having me buy it, let me even try said products, and let me linger for 30 minutes as I decide and wander around the store while texting my husband. Even payment was easy since they accept split payments and tapping. And oh, the neighborhood is perfect for testing out ebikes if your goal is to tackle hills. There's like every grade of hill possible within a 3 kilometer radius.
Also, I have to say that the staff are the happiest retail staff I have ever encountered. I am glad I found this place randomly. It's the first bike store I checked out, and I ultimately bought the bike here and didn't bother checking out other places. You'll never go wrong with this place!

Went in today to buy my first "grownup" bike. Definitely a great experience! Jasper was so helpful in finding the right things that needed to go with the bike and for helping get them installed. I also appreciate that they took the time to explain the bike specs and what would and wouldn't work with it. The prices were reasonable, and overall the team was very welcoming.
KARL NESENSOHN
Excellent selection of bicycles. Staff was able to fill a unorthodox request quickly. I would recommend this establishment.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this shop! The people are amazing and so knowledgeable. The bikes and equipment are stellar quality and their commitment to finding the right bike and fit for you is top notch! From the ability to take a Bike 101 class to a 30 day maintenance and so much more this place follows through on their desires to give you the best experience, product and time! I will forever shop here and recommend that others do as well! Thanks for everything!

TLDR - go to Montlake, they’ll take good care of you.
My experience:
These folks are terrific. After a back surgery and moving to a new neighborhood, I needed a new shop to get me back on the road. My brother-in-law said “go to Montlake, they’ll take good care of you” and he was so right.
Bought a new e-bike that turned out to have some mechanical difficulties and they swapped me out with a different bike that has been nothing short of stellar. For a small shop they have worked really hard to help me find the right gear and the right bike for my needs. Friendly, polite, and professional. Gary even fabricated a custom light mount to sit on my fender to help light the road up that much better on dark night winter commutes. Every time I stop by Gary always communicates what he discovered road testing the bike. Being an e-bike, I can see his road tests when I sync the bike so for the skeptics their road testing policy is legit. And their free bike fitting helped me realize that for 10 years I’ve been riding with the wrong geometry. Gary spent an hour tweaking my saddle, handle bar height and cleat positions and the ride is so much better on my post-surgery back. Since buying the bike I’ve ridden the greatest 500 miles of my life and it’s all thanks to the kindness and effort that the Montlake shop has given me.
I followed up my bike purchase with a new set of Sidis that after a week were just not holding up. They swapped me out with a pair of Specialized and even gave me the price difference and the shoes have been terrific.
Reading some of the unhappy reviews (what few there are) it seems no business can escape difficult customers, however, I can’t say my experience has been anything but spectacular. If you want a shop that doesn’t have any concept of a bottom line go to REI, but if you want to support a small local business with really awesome people then Montlake is the shop for you.

I needed a specific bike to replace my old one that was hit and run over by a car. From the first phone call to the day I picked up the bike, I enjoyed excellent service. The online store proved easy to use also. The warm and friendly atmosphere at the shop made me wish I lived in the area so I could come and hang out and look at cool bike stuff more often. Overall a great experience.

About a year ago on my ride home my commuter shifter cable broke and these guys were able to get me in right away and fix the cable! Same thing happened today and they got me in right away and got me back on the road! Thanks again guys!!!

First time bringing my Canyon road bike in for a tune up, the mechanics were super communicative about what needed to be done and pricing. My bike was perfectly tuned and got a good clean up. Excited to do more business with the shop!

Ok, first thing. I was met immediately at the door by a super friendly staff member (Joe). I explained that I had 3 issues with my bike. Expecting to have to leave my bike for at least a day or two. Upon leaving, I looked back and saw 3 staff members working on my bike! I mean, no one was standing around. To my surprise, Joe called me before I even got home to inform me my bike was ready. Returning to pick up my bike was just as pleasant. I didn't get the young man's name that helped me then. Best of all, the price for the repairs was far less than I expected. Awesome bike shop!!!
Vimal Kumarasamy
Very friendly salesmen and the store was super busy throughout. I think they handled customers who came for new bike purchase with the same enthusiasm as the customers who came to buy a spare part for $5. If they are treating the service customers this well, then I see myself going to this store for every bike needs. I purchased a canondale Topstone from them and the experience was good. There was an 8 month old well behaved pup that was running around the store and I had a good time playing with him. His name was Dact I think

This shop has a great selection of bike accessories. I found some nice fenders for my bike here after checking at three other shops, all of which didn’t have the ones I needed. Also a special shout-out to Bryce, who did an amazing job installing the fenders. 10/10 would recommend.
Tom Clementi
I stopped in here on the advice of my son. Did not have a mask and was given one immediately.
Great assortment of bikes, and accessories. Very knowledgeable employees, especially the owner. I didn't purchase anything today but will be back!
Byron Jourdan
Very knowledgeable and helpful employees! The owner/partner that was in the shop the day I came in gave me great advice and some options to work with the bike shoes I already have instead of immediately looking for new ones. Super helpful!
TJ McDonald
Montlake has become my go-to bike shop. They built a touring bike for me off a Gunnar frame. If you like bike touring or bikepacking this is the place. Carolyn and Gary know how components work over long tours.
Anant Mansingh
Fantastic bike shop! I was a novice to buying road bikes when I walked into their store last year and they did a great job of helping me understand what I was looking for, and set me up with a fantastic bike (and helped ensure it fit me well too)! They know their bikes extremely well, and do a great job explaining (and dumbing it down) for people like me.
Kristen Cash
Montlake bicycle shop is my favorite bike shop! The staff is super knowledgeable and kind. They have a great selection of bikes (reasonably priced - as low as $400 and up to $$$) and all the accessories you could need. I've bought 3 bikes here in the last 3 years, for my whole family. Also, you get a free class on how to tune and care for your bike when you buy one. Love this place.
Sissel Wang
Bought my first gravel bike from them and ever since then, they always remember me by name, answer every kind of question I have no matter how dumb, and are incredibly knowledgeable! I never get nervous going to this shop because I know they're always willing to help out any way they can.
Bast Rose
I very rarely get treated with the level of respect I received walking in to this shop for the first(ish, I just quick grabbed a part the truly first time) time walking in to this shop.
I really appreciate being spoken to rather than having the man I am with being spoken to while I respond.
It means a lot. Thank you. I greatly regret not coming shopping here sooner.
Tim Neill
This is the best bike shop in Seattle. Great and diverse selection of bikes, extremely knowledgeable and friendly staff, and they provide fast service. I will embellish on this greatness with two stories:
1) My coworkers and I were on the Seattle to Portland ride a few years back, and one person's rear wheel began popping spokes 20 miles in to the first day. By the time we reached the rest stop in Puyallup, the wheel was completely detensioned and unable to be ridden. Montlake had a maintenance tent set up at the stop, and they simply gave him a new wheel so that he could keep riding, and told him to swing by back when he was in Seattle to pay for it. How cool is that?!
2) I began a new bike search in March of 2021, and after going to a few other shops, was terrified at the shortages in the bike industry and lack of bikes (e.g. Gregg's had literally 1 endurance road bike in stock). My terror subsided as soon as I walked into Montlake, which had a ton of bikes of varying makes and styles! I casually test rode over ~2 months, and Carolyn finally helped me pick a beautiful steel frame made by Gunnar. What could have been a stressful or pressured experience was relaxing and fun, and I'm super happy with my bike!!
Will definitely be back!
James Dean
Friendly & helpful staff helped me find a nice comfortable helmet at a reasonable price. All kinds of bikes and bike accessories.
Leea Brady
This is by far my favorite shop in the city. After completing STP on a $200 Specialized, I knew it was time for a better rig. Sore shoulders, back and arms after every ride, I knew I needed a proper fitting. 15 years ago Gary sold me my first real road bike and did an amazing job fitting me properly. I have put many century + rides on that bike and I still love it. Just a few years ago when I took it in for regular maintenance Gary was still there. That says a LOT. After starting a family distance cycling became a thing of the past for us (for now!) but I couldn't give up cycling. Just this week I got my first gorgeous gravel bike! I'm so excited to go rip around in the dirt and on the trails with my kiddos! We are even going to try bikepacking. Thank you to everyone at the shop for being so kind, knowledgeable and unpretentious. Its shops like Montlake that keep us cycling. THANK YOU!
Ricky Reyes
Quick and easy service on my new bike which was having issues with the caliper and derailleur. Affordable cost as well. They have a great selection of both bikes and bike supplies
Katrin S.
Went there last week to test a few bikes. The team was super friendly and set up three bikes for me to test ride. They helped me find the perfect ride for me needs and I went in today to get it. They put fenders and a bike rack on, made sure I know about the new to me shifting and where I was going and I was on my way with my shiny new Salsa! The whole team is super knowledgeable and were happy to answer all my newbie questions! Highly recommended!!

While Montlake has an excellent selection of bikes and parts (and much more in stock than what you see on the shop floor), what really makes this shop special is the people that work there. They really care for their customers, whether you are new to cycling or are very experienced. All of the staff are cyclists and cover many different cycling disciplines, so they can provide great guidance.
Here is one example of their great customer service: just last Saturday I rode my bike (which I did not purchase there) to Montlake to pick up some brake pads for it. They noticed that my frame had a cracked head tube and said it would not be safe to ride home. Since it was closing time and I live 18 miles away, they loaned me a bike so I could ride home safely. This is just one of many examples I could share about how they have personally connected with and cared for me as a person, not just a customer.
Caitlin Klask
I love this place. I first came in when I had my old Nishiki totaled after getting hit by a car. While they knew that bike was done for, they helped get me set up with a Liv Alight 3, which has been my dream bike ever since. I took it in for the 200-mile checkup with no issues, then came back a bit later to learn some quick brake fixes and replace the rear derailleurs. They're always helpful, they avoid upselling, and they treat me with respect, which isn't the norm for a woman entering a bike shop.
Next month is my boyfriend's birthday, and I decided to surprise him with a bike. The process was super seamless - I purchased the bike online, paid with PayPal, and got a call when it was assembled in the store. I showed up and Cleaners from Venus was playing, which made me love the place even more. We'll be back for a 200-mile checkup and the Sunday morning maintenance class in the near future!

I'm renewing my interest in biking after many years of not riding. I took my bike in for a tune-up and Rob talked me through what he was going to do, what made the most sense. And, when I went to pick it up, Justin helped me with my bike rack (which I didn't know how to use) so that I could get it back home. Thanks so much for all of your help!
Dave Montgomery
Long wait for help, expensive mtb rentals, indifferent staff. Ended up breaking a small part on my rental bike (rear derailleur hanger) and the guy checking me back in was more concerned about the bike and didn't even ask if I sustained any injuries in the crash. The bikes were top notch, although I had to tighten the back wheel almost immediately after I started riding and the hydraulic brake system was not functioning normally which almost led to several crashes. Upon reporting this to the shop they gave me a funny look and did not offer a discount or coupon for my next time (although I'll probably not be going back anyway).

If you are looking for great customer service, great bicycles, including helmets, gloves, safety lights, bicycle locks, etc., Montlake Bicycle Shop is the establishment for you. The owner, Neil, is a bicycle riding, purchasing, and maintenance expert. He will amiably, patiently answer any question you have, and guide you in the right direction for a bicycle and riding paraphernalia, customized just for you. The bicycles and products are all clearly high quality and very attractive. This shop will help anyone, men and women, looking for excellent bicycles and products. Also, the shop is well-organized, making it easy to see all its products and walk through it.

Awesome service. Helped me learn about changing tires. Great prices on tubes. Super knowledgeable, friendly, fast staff. V highly recommend!

Montlake Cycles has been operating in this neighborhood for over 35 years! I worked here nearly 20 years ago as a bike mechanic and if anything it has only gotten friendlier over the decades. It is one of the nicest bike shops I know and I've been in hundreds of bike shops around the world. :-)
Stacia Starkes
USE THIS SHOP FOR ANY BIKE NEEDS. We personally rented bikes for our visiting friends but they also helped tune up our bikes. Fast. NICE. & Great music taste. We owe them a beer. CHEERS to a great business and amazing staff.
PD O
I use the shop for most of the maintenance I don't have the tools for. They do an excellent job and are good at suggesting lower cost alternatives for various parts and services. I appreciate this approach.
During the summer months they can be very busy. I just lock up my bike and go across the street for a coffee and watch for the crowd to subside.
Mary Fields
Mike was so sweet & helpful! He fixed my bike for free (he said it was simple but I wouldn’t have known that) & then put it on my car’s bike rack for me. I wouldn’t dream of going anywhere else for a new bike or service.
Randy Ling
Was suffering from numb fingers and sore wrists when riding my bike. Went to Montlake for a bike fit to see if that would resolve my issues. Michael went through a very detailed process to get my bike to fit. He listened to my concerns. I am very pleased with the changes that were made to my bike, Now, after a 200 mile ride I am smiling and ready to ride again. I really appreciate the staff and there knowledge at Montlake Bike Shop.
Claudia Diorio
The best customer service! Mike was so helpful and informative about which bike rack would work best for my car. The place to go for your bike needs.

1) Pay Tax, 2) Support your local bike shop, 3) Buy from Montlake Bicycle Shop.
Full disclosure, I'm a bike guy, so I invest in bikes. Having recently moved to Seattle, I decided to treat myself to a higher end titanium commuter / gravel bike. Notwithstanding the pro/con of Lynskey - that is the path I chose. I was going with a fully equipped Ultegra Di2 component set, and like everybody else had the choice of buying direct from Lynskey and avoiding the $500+ sales tax, or buying from my local shop. I opted for the latter for a host of reasons, but in this particular case, it is worthy of saying why. Over the years, I've learned that the bike fit is as important as the bike itself, and rather than just doing it myself, I decided that the specialists at Montlake would be better at it. I also really like the implicit warranty that comes with the bike - i.e. first tune-up, cable tightening after initial stretch (albeit that this doesn't happen too much with Di2). Now in my case, here is where things got interesting. Lynskey true to unscrupulous form heavily discounts their bikes which made the offer too good to pass up. As I was talking with Gary at Montlake, he pointed out that he would order the Shimano components directly from Shimano because they had totally revamped the groupset, and the new one was worth the wait. Pricing was the same, just new and improved. (first improvement over buying direct from Lynskey, i got upgraded components). Second, Gary set me up on their fit machine, to ensure i got proper stem length, frame size, etc. (second improvement). My order was entered, with a 50% deposit (very sizeable, but if i ordered online, i would pay in full - so actually better). When the frame finally shipped, it turns out the components were on back order...like serious back order..... Gary suggested a novel albeit painful work-around...let's put on the components of your older bike so at least you can ride something in the rain. Albeit horrific components, at least i was riding....(moving components free of charge). Gary also set me up with a loaner rack for my panniers which actually was brand new, but not the titanium one i wanted (third & fourth improvement - got me up and riding and with a rack). As the back order months went on, I was getting fairly uncomfortable in my fit setup as I didn't do the whole pendulum, knee alignment, handle bar & saddle adjustment assuming it could wait till the new components came. 4 months in, I broke, and asked Gary if he would do the formal fit.... he did, and even changed out my stem (fifth improvement). Seven months later, the components finally arrived - Gary set me up with a loaner bike - free of charge, and took in my lynskey to do the conversion to di2. (sixth improvement). Gary said early on, at least when the new components came in, it would be like having a new bike all over again...he was right, it's riding awesome (albeit my old component bar was very very low).
In a nut shell: for $500 in tax, I got significantly better components, a temporary setup until the parts were in, a professional bike fit, a loaner bike....and a lot of self-guilt from the bike shop which a web site just can't give you. My principals aside, would I take this trade again...better believe it. Did they discount the bike, no! Did i get every penny's worth - damn right! These guys are awesome.

I spent a month shopping for a bike. It was a slog. My experience at REI was terrible (they told me they didn't want me to "break a nail" adjusting my own seat), and generally I felt treated like an idiot by bike salespeople because I'm not a super experienced cyclist, and there was a lot of gendered nonsense too. Montlake was the only place where I was treated like a person and a peer. Highly recommend buying a bike there.
Jong Lee
Super friendly staff willing to try to fix anything without spending a lot of money. I took in an electric scooter and they were willing to try based on a YouTube video. Went back next day with a bike and they recommended a cheap solution. I have no idea what others are talking about, but I’m no bike snob.
Janet Eicher
I really like this shop. I got great customer service.even though they where busy. Not only did I get my bike serviced quickly, for a very reasonable price, I bought a new one that I love. Went to several other shops before I found this one, and I have to say I sure am glad i did.
Michael Kirk
Great place to buy a bike or get parts and service for bikes that you own.. this store is part of the cycling history in Seattle..
Lucy Cooley
Neil and the gang are so helpful, thoughtful and accommodating! I rented two different folding bikes, a Dahon and a Brompton. The staff was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Neil spent lots of time with me to get me comfortable with both brands. The rates were very reasonable and I will definitely go back to them next time I am in Seattle.
Raffie Colet
Rented bikes on a Sunday to ride the town. Their location was great and we were able to get to everywhere and back on various bike friendly roads and trails. The bikes we rented were like new, actually one was brand new. The bikes came with a pump, tool kit, and spare tubes. (Thankfully we did not need them) Additionally their prices were the best around and the day fee including a lock and helmet were cheaper than renting elsewhere for a few hours. Then to top it off since we couldn't return in time 4pm on a Sunday the owner arranged for us to drop off the bikes @ his house! Talk about going the extra mile! Thanks for a great day of riding!
Daniel Romlein
Really thoughtful, knowledgeable, professional staff. My favorite Seattle bike shop.
During COVID they've been great in terms of availability and turnaround.
Kathleen Agard
Great experience whenever I go in. Most recently my bike got hit by a car, and I needed my bike checked out after the collision. They were very friendly/helpful and did a thorough checkup with some small adjustments and made sure I was good to get back out and ride.
Bryan Prack
Great selection of bikes and accessories. Mike Q. helped review the current two wheel offerings and selection of the most adequate floor pump. Thanks for the great service.
Peter Hollis
Rented two bikes my week in Seattle -- a Bianchi road bike and a Salsa full suspension. Both bikes were great. Service and attention by staff was first rate -- despite how busy they were any time I was in the shop.
Benjamin
I love this shop. Perhaps the most knowledgeable shop I've been to, friendly, not pushy, and really takes time to explain things. If they carry it a thing in stock, that's where I'm buying it.
Josh Stusser
Visited 05/23. Gary and the other tall skinny guys were great, quick turnaround /fix. The stockier guy at the front of the store could use some work on his customer service.
Moises Hernandez
I rented a tandem road bike for a day and rode around Seattle, it was an amazing experience. The staff is friendly and helpful. The bike was in great condition. The rental was a great deal!
Michael Mayer
Replaced my bike tube 4 times at different shops around Seattle and kept getting flats.
These guys took the time to actually find the cause (a tiny piece of glass embedded in tire). Lifesavers.
Hanoch Yeung
Great experience test riding bikes. Mike was especially helpful in setting up and explaining the bikes. Would definitely recommend shopping here.
Malcolm Dole
I was in a tight spot in need of a complicated repair, they got it done, and done well overnight.

Best Bike Shop I've visited in a long while. Genuinely awesome customer service and they don't treat you like you are wasting their time. Adam fixed a shifting issue with my Sram eTap for me promptly and charged a very reasonable rate. Honestly, all bike shops should run like this place.
