Reviews of Union Loafers Café and Bread Bakery
Shari Whay, St. Louis Realtor
What can you say? This is one of those restaurants that you just love everything about it…the atmosphere, the staff, the amazing food! The bread! The Italian salad…yum! I haven’t had a pizza here yet that I haven’t liked, but the simplicity and flavor of the Tomato Pie is my favorite. They have a nice patio and additional outdoor seating for two on the sidewalk. They also serve lunch.

Place is usually packed but pretty quick, and always highly recommend for lunch, pizza, or just stopping in for some bread - because that is what they are known for after all. Sitting on the infamous corner in botanical
Heights boasting a shortlist of heavy hitting restaurants and bakeries in the St. Louis food scene. The pics are a recent trip and feature the smoked trout salad sandwich and some other crowd favorites.
Courtney DesMarais
Best lunch spot hands down!
Smoked beet sandwich, egg salad sandwich plus giardiniera, potato salad, house gem, kale and garbanzo soup, and coffee soda are my top favorites for sure! Love the marinara pizza and italian salad for dinner too!! Best bread and pizza in town, nothing compares. Try the oat porridge, semolina, or seeded Janie’s.
Loafers does it flawlessly every time! Anything you get it delicious and handcrafted. Highly recommend

I've been to so many places that use their amazing bread so I had to try this place! We got sandwiches for lunch, and the bread was great as always, but the sandwiches each were just okay. If I lived closer, I'd stop in for loaves of bread, and maybe try the dinner pizza everyone talks about, but wouldn't get the sandwiches.

Guys, I am a sandwich guy. I love sandwiches. This sandwich was to die for. Bacon Turkey Bianca. This put the bacon Turkey bravo to shame at bread company to shame. I initially thought it was a little pricey at like $15, but wow was this sandwich put together perfectly. It was the perfect combination for each bite. The bread is utterly immaculate. Bacon is also outstanding. $15 is a deal. Top sandwich for me!! Can't wait to try more.

My go-to lunch place! They have the best bread for sandwiches. Everyone deserves bistro beef, but please don't order them cause they always sell out a minute before I get there :(
Oh and the staff members are amazing as well :)
Ashley Garvey
Some of the best pizza in St. Louis! They have a wonderful Tuesday night deal - pizza, an Italian salad (amazing btw), and either a 4 pack of beer or bottle of wine for $35. Can’t beat it, and it’s the perfect amount of food for two. Great spot for fresh baked breads and cookies too. A must visit for locals and visitors :)

Had lunch there , it was really awesome. Had vegan smoked beet root sandwich with Kale garbanzo soup and pizza bites

Excellent bread! I just stopped in for a couple loaves, so I didn't try any "food". I went at lunchtime so they said they couldn't slice loaves for me during that time, so if that's important to you, don't go during lunch.
I got a marble rye loaf and the light and mild. The rye was dark and delightful. The sourdough was chewy and perfectly crisp on the exterior. I had them as toast and also just sliced with butter and I couldn't tell you which was better. Exceptional quality and am returning this week to try 2 more!
Wonderful find!!!

An excellent bakery with good sandwiches for lunch and good pizza for dinner. Don't go in expecting a large menu because that's it! But, don't get me wrong what they serve here is top notch and their bread is fantastic. They have a small cocktail menu but they are all well balanced in my experience. Probably my favorite restaurant in the Saint Louis area.

Love the food. Hands down amazing bread and sandwiches. Pizza in their sourdough also a clear winner.
Lots of use of dill flavor- little gem salad is also a superbly refreshing, savory and perfect touch of acidity.
A huge fan. A reason why half the town buys their bread to serve in their restaurant
Theo
Get their early, place gets busy quick and can run out of items on the menu! A solid choice for a great lunch and a small market is across the street which is also pretty cool!
Kessashun Arthur
This is a great place to grab a satisfying lunch. I was a little hesitant to try them since it looked to just be a sandwich shop with a few soups and salads, but don't let that deter you. They bake fresh breads in-house that are incredibly delicious, and make the sandwiches that much better. You get generous portions of meats that are very flavorful and thoughtfully garnished. Their trout salad (which they don't always offer) is one of best things I've ever tasted! They become a pizza place for dinner, but I haven't tried that yet. Either way, service is quick and friendly in an attractive atmosphere. Union Loafers can get a little pricey for what it is, but you will undoubtedly get a very high quality meal.

Best Bread I have ever had, and I have been chasing down good bread for 50 years. I have had six different breads, all great. But the trading pane and the sesame are my favorites. Splurge fir the tempered butter, it is worth it. Fantastic salads and soups, too. Worth it to go just for that.
Katie Baker
One of my absolute favorite pizza joints in STL. Get the buttermilk dressing to dip your pizza in!
Valerie Ginsburg
Everyone was in flow like that of a great baseball game -- firmly delighted to be there and see would-be diners.
The Caeser salad was probably the best I can remember.
The pizza (we tasted four flavors) was clean eating and spiced to perfection. Be sure and try the house-made sodas.
Coalfather
We bought a loaf of bread to take home recently and it did not disappoint. Beautiful crust and flavor. Obviously made with love. We haven’t tried the pizza or sandwiches yet but we will be back.
Skyla Lewis
Its okay. It seems over priced. Had their chicken rice soup. It was so weird because it tasted like somebody put a lemon in it. I got a Turkey sandwich and it was alright. It seemed really bland. The workers were friendly. They were packed. So people enjoy them. It just wasn't my cup of tea.
Hello Gregory
One word, Amazing! Just go, you won’t be disappointed.
The space is bright with sunlight streaming through big windows and the food is amazing. Well worth waiting for or order to go.
We shared a Little Gem salad with bacon. Nice chunky pieces, oh my! The roasted pork sandwich fantastic. Don’t forget wine and spirits and yes you have to have the best chocolate chip cookie ever.
This is a must place to go. I must also say how very impressed I was with the staff. Not only do they do a great job, but they also work so well together. For me this really makes for a great place.
P.S. Yes, they sell bread, pretzels and a wonderful pizza rosa.
Obi Griffith
We had two of their sandwich options, a soup, potato salad, and the coffee soda. Every single item was absolutely delicious. It is rare that you get a meal without a single miss. Came back a second time. Service was fantastic. The pizzas are incredible. Cocktails were just ok but not enough to detract from the overall excellence of this place.
Autumn P
AMAZING sandwich. i got the turkey bacon one. the ingredients are so fresh and wholesome tasting. obviously the bread is fantastic, but the turkey and super thick cut bacon were super tasty as well. love the (very slightly) spicy mayo they put on it as well. note that these are COLD sandwiches (something i didn’t know until i picked up my sammi). make sure to place your sandwich order IN THE MORNING because lots of the sandwiches were SOLD OUT when i tried to place my order around 11:15am. basically, you place your order and then you can pick it up anytime between 12-4pm. they have all the sammis already pre-made by 12 so it’s not like they make it when you get there or like you tell them what time you’ll pick it up. that means you also can’t modify the sandwich. also this place is HELLA EXPENSIVE (like $14-15 for a sandwich only, no chips or anything, which is why it’s not 5 stars imo). honestly i don’t even know if it’s worth it but the sandwich is absolutely fantastic so i’ll probably pay it again.
Kate Sanders
Super cute little place, roasted pork sandwich was fantastic. Everything we tried was kept simple and to the highest quality. Would definitely come back.
Clay Babin
Great pizza and salad. The music isn't so loud you can't hear whoever you're with. Staff were great too. Definitely will go back.
Lynn Venhaus
Scrumptious perfectly seasoned egg salad on panned par porridge bread!
Matt Alvino
Small bakery/bistro-ish joint that is bright and inviting. Every high-end hipster and cliche millennials dream. My only knock is that it's super popular and not very big so be ready to wait for a while on a Saturday morning. I didn't take away a star because it's popular, more so because I don't like awkwardly standing around in cramped quarters waiting endlessly for a table. It's literally my worst nightmare. For context, my wife used some reservation app that originally had 12 groups in front of us. It took nearly 2 hours to get though that many peeps...
All that said, the food is awesome. I got the pulled pork special and really enjoyed it. My wife got the standard salad and it was equally awesome. Highly recommend for a foodie type. Is a bit pricey by my standards, but I'm cheap... Think $15 an entree if you want a side.
Parking is all off street. Service was good. They are just so busy you don't get a ton of interaction outside of refilling drinks, which they did often.
Patrick Hall
Phenomenal. I bake bread at home, and mine can't compare to what these geniuses are doing over here. I even do the whole sourdough starter thing! They must be putting craploads of love into their bread.
M McClenahan
The restaurant has seating at the nice sized butcher block looking bar and some tables as well. The place is quite small so you may have to wait to be seated. The atmosphere is clean & simple; the wait staff friendly & efficient. We were there for dinner which consists of 18” pizzas and several appetizers. We opted for salads & pizza. Our Italian & Caesar side salads were fresh and flavorful. We had the Classic pizza (tomato, mozzarella & basil) and red wine. Hands down a superbly crafted pizza. They give you one of several dipping sauces for the crust. We only ate half of the pizza & they boxed up the remaining half. For dessert they had large chocolate chip cookies which were delectably soft with plenty of chocolate melted chips. This went great with the perfectly brewed coffee I had. Also, purchased a couple of loaves of their fresh baked bread.
Andrew Bartelsmeyer
Best bread in St. Louis! Everything served in the restaurant is amazing as well, definitely get a side of soup with any sandwich you try!
David Kim
Incredible sandwiches and salad. Our family sampled three sandwiches, salad and pizza rossa on a limited takeout menu, and everything was fantastic. Even the vegetarian beet sandwich had us gushing compliments.
Pictured: little gem salad and 1/4 slices of the bistro beef, smoked beet and toscano sandwiches.
Steve Jones
At first I was skeptical because a $12 sammy seemed very expensive, but the price is completely worth it! I ordered a ham and cheddar on marble rye and every aspect of this sandwich was sublime. Run, don't walk, to get in the lunch line for this delightful shop! You won't regret it. Space is a little tight, but the staff is friendly and helpful!
AJ Griem
I went here for the first time today, and I already can't wait to go back and get another sandwich.
Yes, it's that good.
Yes, you should go.
kristen malone
Yum! Got an Italian salad and 4 of us split the spinach & bacon pizza. It was absolutely amazing. We received great service and had a good time. The restaurant is a little small but there’s a patio. They’re also on NoWait which was a HUGE plus!
Arielle Sabio
Definitely a must go to restaurant for the bread alone. We waited a long time to be seated (to be expected on a Saturday at 1pm especially since they have limited seating), but the staff was apologetic and polite. That and the food made it for the long wait. The gem salad was delicious and the turkey and swiss was amazing.
Susan Wells
We sat on the patio, and our server was awesome - very attentive and helpful! At her recommendation, we ordered the starter of "burnt toast" with fresh ricotta. I saw it on the menu and was like 'meh' at the name, but it was so incredible, I'd come back just for that one dish. The bread was perfectly toasted, yet chewy and a little soft, rubbed with garlic, and then you spread the delicious creamy ricotta with fresh herbs on top. ❤️ 10/10 would recommend.
Teresa Skyles
Loafers is always consistent!! You can tell they strive for excellence - every order is done with care. Good ingredients and great staff. Love how they have continued to reinvent the restaurant during COVID. Highly recommend!
Jen Yerkes
Great breads. Interesting pizzas! Loved the vegan option. Lovely stiff drinks.
Cookie for dessert had great flavors but was super hard/dry.
Ashleigh Wasson
One of the best blt's I have ever had. House made bread and sodas.
Sarah Irvin
Very impressed with their COVID protocols. Vaccination proof required to dine in and then they hand you a table number after you order, very efficient and easy. The bread is amazing of course, makes any sandwich great. I've also had their pizza (only available in the evenings) and it is pretty fantastic too. A solid STL gem.
Mellowtonin
Good pizza, but you have to order online or show up the at the store. Lady told me I could not place a pick up order over the phone?? Sus
Colin Davitt
It was wicked busy but the beet sandwich was the best. I was pretty sure it would be the worst, because of the beets, but was surprised. I am now dreaming of beer sandwiches. Also try the cookies, they are sweet.
Randy Johnson
Have a sandwich or pizza lunch and get fresh bread to go! Sandwich specials worth a try. Well organized ordering and seating, good staff doing good things.
Tom Roach
Simple and comfortable environment. Fresh cheese and burnt toast was delightful, excellent pizza. Had a really great beer and the staff were friendly, and helpful. Would definitely return
Nabil Foster
Fantastic pizza. Seating is limited inside, but when they put out the patio furniture, the seating capacity doubles. Cocktails are very good.
Chris Sotraidis
Fun place. Really dug the atmosphere in the cafespot on music and vibes. The bread here is out of this world, and the sandwiches are wonderful. The salads are also equally amazing, and I'm not one to get excited about salad. Seems like this place is usually as busy as can be on the weekends. Expect a wait if you don't have a reservation, especially in the morning or around noon. Try their in house sodas, totally worth the money! This is as nice as a sandwich place that makes it's own bread can be. Wow.
Only cons are the size of the place (too small) and the prices being a bit on the high end. If it were a little bit cheaper I could see myself coming here all the time.
Katie Jones
So, I was super skeptical when I saw the price tag....$12 sammy? Yikes! But yes, it was worth it. This place is legitimately delicious. I had a ham and cheddar on marble rye with mustard and not one aspect was below sublime. Run, don't walk, to this place; but get there early as there will be a line!
Jesse R
Absolutely delicious Marinara pie. Do not underestimate the Marinara pie. Mouth-watering tomato sauce with garlic and basil atop crisp and thin pizza crust. We also shared the large caesar salad which was irresistible, heavy anchovy vibe as caesar should be. I will say if you are going on a pizza night (Tues-Sat, 5:30-9ish?), expect a long queue. We happened to slip in right as they opened and got a spot at the bar almost immediately (but barely making it!). I really enjoyed sitting at the bar in front of a lot of action from the busy and attentive crew. Quick shout-out to the staff as they were truly hustling!
I'm excited to come back and try other pies and perhaps their sandwich/breads and other lunch items.
Stephanie Heese (Stephanie Nachtab)
A true work of art. Friendly staff and great food!
Damian Farewell
The atmosphere is amazing, the best of a bar and a cafe. The food is amazing, the bread is the closest I've found to a French baguette in St. Louis by leaps and bounds! The coffee soda is a high recommendation: a unique coffee-citrus beverage that's not too sweet but still clearly coffee. The sandwiches are all decadent, you won't go wrong with whatever you pick! Will definitely be back!
Tara Schultz
This was my first time dining in and the service was excellent!
Overall good selection of libations and not a long wait for our food! The pizza is fantastic!
Delaney, our server, was attentive, friendly, and competent. I had a wonderful experience and look forward to visiting again soon.
Robert Whitney
The wait is significant but it's worth it. The food and the bread are terrific. We both had the gem salad, then the turkey and the ham.
Rocky Zeitler
Easily some of the best bread and sandwiches in the St. Louis area. I've ordered a few times from this place and you really can't go wrong. I have yet to try their pizza but eager to.
Tania Lebratti
Our favorite place for lunch the beet sandwich and Rosa and coffee soda and cookies and garbanzo soup are all fantastic.
Steven Schmidt
The best sourdough in St. Louis! Keep a lookout for the potato bread. It’s a standout.
John Hickey
I had the bacon/spinach pizza and it was excellent. The crust was a highlight, thanks to Union Loafers, and the toppings were great as well. Also had the Caesar's Salad which paired well with the pizza. I split a pizza and salad with one other person and it was plenty of food.
Elizabeth Campbell
The quality of the food is excellent! We got a salad and a half sandwich. However, the prices are a bit outrageous. $15 for a deli sandwich just doesn’t make sense. It wasn’t THAT good.
Labib Haddad
Excellent food if you can get it. Love their food, however the idiosyncratic way of ordering and picking up is such a hassle that we end up ordering elsewhere almost every time we think about getting take out from there. Hopefully with the easing of the pandemic and better staffing they can get their act together.
Matt Healey
Great pizza and salad options. Highly recommend the spinach pizza.
Tom Mason
Delicious, salad was terrific with fresh parsley and dill. Customer service was exceptional.
Smoked beet sandwich was interesting tastes and very filling.
Michael Hope
Margarita pizza with the buttermilk dipping sauce. Wonderful. The dipping sauce complemented the spicy sauce on the pizza.
We had the Caesar and Italian salads.
I think we agreed the Caesar was the best.
A nice wine completed the meal.
Kyra
Delicious salad, pizza, and cookie! Topped off with excellent service!
nick graves
not bad they were out of the pizza bread when I went. but I loved the street sweeper that passed by
Eduardo Sequeira
Very good system to accommodate people. The food is always amazing. Worth to eat healthy carbs here.
Deborah Wilbur
Does Brian Lagerstrom work at your establishment? I follow him on YouTube and desperately want to order directly from this chef in a restaurant! 🤗 ☮️ On 🌍 😁 …
Tayler Bertelsman
Great pizza and appetizers for dinner! Service is wonderful, the menu is innovative, and the pizza is a wonderful mix of NY style and neapolitan. The cheese + toast appetizer is to die for. I cannot wait to come back to try their bread and sandwiches!
Justin Lipner
Excellent! Had the Italian salad and the pepperoni pizza. Crust is nearly perfect. Well done.
Mike Metzger
Probably the best NY style pizza in this city. Excellent bite and chew to the crust. Fresh ingredients.. Get the marinara with calabrian chilies.
Chen Jan
Pretzel is chewy. Oat porridge loaf is huge and very impressive. Price is fair.
Ronak Jariwala
It is the best pizza in Saint Louis. Great service and food here.
Emily White
Union Loafers has amazing bread. Their semolina is delicious and their light sourdough is a great all around bread.
Today we finally had a chance to try their sandwiches and pretzels for the first time and they were worth the wait! Also grab one of their giant chocolate chip cookies, so good!
Just fair warning, the reason it took so long for us to give them a try was that the website and ordering system is a bit convoluted. The menu is restocked daily at 11 am, so no orders can be made before that time. The little bit frustrating part is that if something is out of stock, it is not listed, so you can't see what items are usually available before hand. So if you are thinking about going on Fri, I would recommend trying to look at the menu on Thurs between 11 and 12 to see what will theoretically be available the next day. I have also heard the staff say that if you have a large order, you can email a few days in advance but I can't confirm that.
But in spite of the hassle, I would definitely recommend giving them a try. The food is excellent, the ambiance of the surrounding shops is charming, and the staff gives great service.
Connor Duffy
Dined in and it was a great experience. Excellent service! The burnt ends are a MUST. High quality pizza too.
john capuano
I think their food is definitely good. If you haven't had it, get you some. It's worth it. It's a bit overpriced and a bit overhyped to for me to be a regular.
Rob Ball
Pizza was outrageously good. Best we have had. The crust is the perfect balance of chewiness and crusty. The ingredients are all delicious and high quality. The wait is well worth it!
Austin
The bread and the sauce were easily the MVPs of the meal, although the thick cut bacon was in close second. The balance between quantity and quality seems to be right on the money (pun intended). Patio dining is somewhat limited for the time being, although getting takeout and heading to a local park would make for a great picnic! Overall, an above average dining experience
Dave Gilbert
A bit pricey but probably the very best - or certainly among the very best - bread in St. Louis. Rivals or could take its place among NYC bread bakers in terms of sourdough, baguettes, ryes, etc., and that's high praise. You won't find rich, sweet, moist types of breads here, more of the crusty but tasty variety: they do them all justice with delicious sandwiches. Not a lot of places to sit (eat inside) and a bit tight that way, but take those sandwiches via takeout or curbside and sit in a local park (Tower Grove is nearby) and enjoy nature and eating well. They also do pizza - we were a bit under-whelmed on that as the delicious bread led to high expectations. Nonetheless, highly recommended!
Christopher Durkin
Though google maps says they're takeout only, there are a few tables scattered around the entrance, so don't feel like you have to grab your food and leave. That out of the way, this is a solid spot. I got the smoked beet sandwich, and would do so again. The french bread was chewy and took some jaw strength to get through, but crucially, not so much that the sandwich contents were extruded. Solid work, team. I'll be back for one of those pizzas.
bamba Ndiaye
Enjoyed the special with half a sandwich and a bowl of soup.
The Czech pilsner was great
Abby Bartlett
Union Loafers is great! I went for lunch with a friend and got the turkey bacon sandwich. The sandwich was a decent size, the toppings were good quality, and of course the bread was off the charts! Price is the only drawback - hey, I don’t mind paying $12 for lunch now and then, but couldn’t it come with chips included? Still, totally recommend trying this place out!
Angie Meuth
I always crave Union Loafers. The bread is so chewey and soft, the sandwiches are just the right balance. The soup, amazing. I love their beer selection. The staff is always warm and friendly and they do an amazing job. My only wish is that they didn't sell out of bread so fast!
Jerry Perks
Great bread. The sandwich was very tasty. Have to show your COVID vaccination card to eat inside. It's a very busy place so expect to wait.
John Hopkins
Can't find a better lunch spot in the city. One of my favorite salads ever. Pizza is top quality too. The crust tastes homemade!
Hannah Franko
I've heard people rave about this place for years and finally had the chance to stop by and give it a try. The sandwich is unassuming in looks, but amazing in flavor. I had the Toscano, the meat was quality, the cheese distinctive, the banana peppers added a bite, and the mayo was present enough to taste while not overwhelming the balance of flavors - all served on house made focaccia bread which had a great texture and beautiful crunch. This sandwich combined to make a truly decadent experience. I paired it with the Cherry-Citrus drink which is tart, refresing, and cuts through the sandwich allowing you to re-experience that first bite, again and again. This is a sandwich I will think about for a long time to come.
Manuel Brockman
Heard about their sandwiches and pizza. The bacon turkey bianca was very good. The stand out was the bread. But the rest was fresh. Maybe a little heavy on the sauce, but had great flavor. Will come back for pizza
Michael Snodgrass
Best pizza in St Louis. I love the buttermilk dipping sauce, yummy onion and garlic flavor perfect for the crust. Don't sleep on the chocolate chip cookies. Still 5 out of five best pizza in St Louis Krispy crust no flop
Jo Mohan
Their pizza is delicious, have no doubt, but the buttermilk sauce is absolutely incredible. It was amazing with the pizza but it also goes with everything! I suggest mixing it with pasta to add a little more flavor or using it as a condiment on sandwiches.
Highly recommend, 10/10, would buy again.
Jen West
Do you even live in St. Louis if you don't know and LOVE Union Loafers? Probably not. From the breads, sandwiches, pizza, and salads... EVERYTHING IS A HIT. I could probably drink that buttermilk dressing straight. The service is always consistent, food quality never wavering. Today I ordered the beef and buttermilk sandwich with a side of potato salad. Maybe the closest I've come to Nirvana. There is no way to explain the richness of the flavors and textures. I am drooling just thinking about it...
Sara Tran
Always amazing!! Wish we can sit inside to eat though...but I understand
Alexis Mathews
The servers are cheerful, knowledgeable about their menu, and you can tell all of them LOVE bread. I bought their light and mild bread, which was fantastic with good olive oil, Parmesan, salt and pepper. I also came back to try their mushroom pizza which did not disappoint- the "meat" of the pizza was absolutely delicious! They did NOT skimp on the mushrooms or onions, which I appreciate, and everything blended perfectly to create a wonderfully delectable pizza. I will say that the crust tended to be on the more "airy" side, which is similar to their sourdough bread; it wasn't thick or dense.
A D
The pizza is great but the sandwiches are good, too!
Denise Edgar
This is by far the best bread in St Louis. They sell out fast and each loaf is handmade. It a little hard to get into . Right now all orders have to be place online. Or after 230 you can place an order by phone for that day but you have to. Come back to pick up at a. Very specific time.again it is fresh and handmade. I love it. The menu's food delivers as well hand crafted and delicious. I don't want them to ever get bigger . A mistake restaurants make and then its different. This bread and pizza is worth the fight. After all its a new experience. Denise
Ashley Gendron
Got the mushroom pizza, drinks, and ended with a chocolate chip cookie! Excellent quality and great service.
Hannah Carter
Incredibly delicious pizzas, bread, and highly recommend the house made sodas!
Travis Lufsey
The staff here are fantastic. Everything that I have ever had from this place has been the best in St. Louis. The pizza, the sandwiches, the bread and of course the chocolate chip cookies..all top notch.
Harry Gunawan
The pizza was a bit salty, but overall I almost give 5 🌟. Price$$. …
Ximena Lemoine
We come almost every week to pick up bread here. Loaves are delicious, especially if you are into sourdoughs, I recommend giving the Bloody Butcher loaf a try! The food here during lunch is also super tasty. Great salads and sandwiches as well as tasty drinks alcoholic and non. I am a huge fan of their coffee soda. Atmosphere is warm, decor is modern and hip. Excellent service. One of my favorites in the city.
Pedro Melo Rodriguez
I found the place online and had the Spinach pizza. Really great! Tho the marinara sauce that we got was as an expensive as a loaf of their famous bread. In my opinion the sauce shouldn't be as much as a drink. We were disappointed that we couldn't try their bread in the restaurant. Their appetizer options weren't as great either. Over all good service. Place for a drink and main course. The people next to us got the salad and it seem very plain and not worth the 10 dollars.
Amber Fisher
You could order the same thing 100 times and it will always be made to the same standard, with the upmost quality and care in mind. The staff is so polite and helpful. The bread is incredible. I could eat a loaf in a day and I usually do. Eat here.
Ziheng Xu
Extraordinary bread, pizza, and cookie. They likely put in lots of efforts to perfect their recipe through experimentation. Eclectic wine selection. Overall amazing place
Alex Deaton
One of the very finest eateries in STL.
Lunch is the best soup/salad/sandwich spot known to man, and Dinner ups the ante with some of the best pizza in St. Louis. On top of it all they sell delicious fresh baked bread every day. Not to be missed.
andrew stubbs
I had the PB&J on wheat bread. A strange selection perhaps, but I love peanut butter. Worth every penny! Considered getting another one just for the bread. The customer service was professional and polite.
Kathryn Hagerty
Pear and blue cheese salad was fantastic. Winter greens and pistachios matched the dressing perfectly - obviously very fresh. The Cuban sandwich was good but nothing special. Smoked beet sandwich was interesting, the strong smokey flavor overwhelmed the beets too much. The bread was on the sandwiches was good. Outside seating was really nice.
Alyssa Carter
If you are fussy about your baked products, you will enjoy Union Loafers. The pizzas are full of fresh ingredients, the dairy free options are amazing, the sausage & cheese is my personal favorite. But don't stop at pizza, you've got to try the sandwiches, soups, and salads -- all amazing. Easy curb-side pick-up, just be sure to visit their website for ordering details before you try to get some food. One last note: ask about their specials before you make up your mind about what to order.
Ryan B
I love Union Loafers, and crave their roast beef sandwich (one of the best sandwiches I've had), but the past couple times I've ordered it, I have been a little disappointed.
$18 after T&T, for just the sandwich (no chips now), and it seems like the portion of roast beef has been cut in half.
The sandwich remains to be as tasty as ever, but it's hard to justify the price with such a minimal amount of roast beef.
Maybe I have just been unlucky, and will give it another try, but If this is the new norm I will be super bummed.
Lindsey Burke
What a great little place! Ordered the Italian Salad, Spinach pizza (to share! They only come in 18") and a glass of rose. Everything was so incredibly fresh, the service was friendly and accommodating, and the atmosphere feels very upscale, which I was not expecting. I have heard SUCH good things about the Little Gem Salad and can't wait to go back for lunch. It's a small place, so give yourself some extra time to wait for a table. It's a new favorite, for sure!
Crystal Kueker
Amazing pizza, best wood fire in St Louis. The cheese and burnt toast appetizer is delicious, won't want to miss. Definitely try to get there when they first open, otherwise expect to wait a while for a seat. Everyone that works here are great, awesome atmosphere!
Aaron Sherman
Easily the best lunch in the city, probably some of the best food period. It's just soup/salad /sandwiches but there's more flavor, complexity and tastebud bliss than many a fine French restaurant. Please wait for a day I'm not going to go though, they keep selling out of the roast beef.
Bill Knight
Excellent pizza. We had the pepperoni pizza and it was one of the best pizzas that I have ever had. The dough was amazing and the pizza was covered with thick pepperonis. Just the right mixture of cheese and sauce too. The buttermilk side dipping sauce was also fantastic to dip the crust into it tasted like a house made ranch but with a kick of garlic for an extra zing.
Brad Beggs
Such a nice place. Comfortable atmosphere but can be crowded and noisy at lunch. Turnover is fast, so even if there's a line you should be seated fairly quickly.
The menu is limited but it is all good. Try the pretzel for sure. The new smoked trout sandwich is also fantastic. They offer several draft beers and nice wines.
Brian
This place is like your best friend, but in restaurant form. Tasty sandwiches and salads for lunch and huge flavorful pizzas for dinner. They always have a great selection of beer on draft, good cocktail list and wines, and top notch local coffee. The staff: always friendly and helpful. They have chocolate chip cookies too. What more could you ask for? Oh, you need to buy a whole loaf of freshly made bread? They got that too and many to choose from. They can get really busy so use the No Wait App. A++++++
L Thomson
Had lunch with one other person. The acoustics were a bit annoying...lots of noise and echoing. The seats were slightly uncomfortable (super high-back wooden chairs). The food was very good. I had a ham and cheddar sandwich with chips. I also had the blond pale ale. Both were very tasty. The bread on the sandwich was delicious. Lots of ham, great pickles and mustard. My lunch companion was equally impressed with her roast beef sandwich. Would recommend and will return.

Very delicious bread, which makes sense for a place called Union Loafers. The classic sourdough is delicious, but I am obsessed with the potato bread. Make sure to eat it within 2-3 days or it becomes somewhat tough/dry. I have also tried and loved the cheesy bread. If you are looking for a meal, the rare roast beef sandwich is my go-to.
I have tried the gem salad and thought the salads/soups are pretty expensive for the amount/substance of food you get. Not exactly sure why they cost so much; the meat sandwiches and fresh breads make sense to cost more, but I don't know how I feel about charging $4 for a handful of chicken on a $11-12 salad.
A bit pricy for a casual lunch, but it's a treat if you are willing to make the trip and order the bread-centric items. It is also a pretty small place for being so popular, so make sure to plan accordingly.
Sam Earl
I first started going here for lunch and love the little gem salad and would buy a loaf of sourdough bread.
After about a year, I decided to try their pizza. OH MY GOSH!!!! Of course the dough is just perfect (their "thing" is bread).'I've tried several different ones here and cannot decide on my favorite.
Oh, and get the cookie - a well worth it treat.
Miguel de Faria e Castro
These guys make the absolute best roast beef sandwich I've ever eaten! Sandwiches (served at lunch) and pizza (dinner) are absolutely fantastic, as is all the bread that you can buy OTC to take home. Beware though: they are very good but they also get very busy. For weekend brunch I would recommend trying to head there around the time it opens if you are a large group. Dinner with large groups is very difficult in my experience.
Austin Doherty
I treasure every visit to Loafers. Went on a Saturday evening with a large-ish group (6 people). The cocktails were typically fantastic. The sesame bread was divine, the marinara matched. I love their pizzas. My one complaint is the cheesy bread is only available at lunch. But with service this outstanding, the folks at Loafers know not to give you too much of a good thing.
Jared Andrews
This is the best pizza I've ever had, nevermind the best pizza in St. Louis. The pepperoni is excellent. A pie will run you about 20 bucks, but they are huge and can feed 4 pretty easily. Good service and great chocolate chip cookies too. Get it to go or get there right when they open to avoid a wait, as it's a pretty small place.
Michelle Annette
My favorite restaurant to bring friends and family to for lunch when they come to visit! The food is irresistibly good. You can taste the love the chef puts into these creations! I always get the gem salad when I go, either as a side or a meal, and I recommend asking for some of the house made sauerkraut on the side. Also I can never get enough of the pizza rossa!
Hayley Mann
Best sandwiches in Saint Louis and the best roast beef sandwich I’ve ever had. The staff are so wonderful even when super busy. Amazing space, wonderful to sit outside when weather permits. And as if all that wasn’t enough, they make PIZZA for dinner and it is far and away the best pizza in STL and the only place I will order from. All around one of the absolute gems of STL.
J W
Picked up a to go order today (Porchetta sandwich and a loaf of sourdough bread) and it was fantastic! The order process was straight forward and right on time as stated by the order receipt. I highly recommend this place and can't wait to go back.
Heather Visser
The pizza was incredible, gigantic, and we'll worth the visit! The burnt bread appetizer was phenomenal and made the experience even better.
Our waitress was quick and kind. Just a great place with high quality food.
Jackie Shollack
This bakery/restaurant has a cool cozy vibe. We ate dinner here and split an Italian salad and a pepperoni pizza. The salad was fresh, crisp and dressed perfectly. The pizza is one of the best I’ve had, anywhere! It’s big and enough for 3 people! Highly recommend!
Nikolai Arendovich
The food is fantastic, the bread has some of the nicest crumb I've seen and tastes very fresh. The interior has a fresh modern look, and the service was fast. My only major complaint was that the prices are kind of steep. 4 dollars for a few slices of bread and butter felt steep. That said, bread is definitely an under priced good and this place proves that good bread is worth it.
Veronica Ray
There’s is never a reason to get pizza anywhere else in St. Louis but here. Also their little gem salad is amazing. They know exactly what ingredients to use and how to put them together to make magic out of the simplest foods. I can’t go longer than 2 weeks without coming here and have never had a bad meal or experience!!
Drew Orf
Absolutely dynamite! Had the Turkey bacon Bianca, dirty bbq chips, loaf of their signature sourdough, and a little piece of heaven. Haha. Amazing food my first time here after moving to the south county STL my god so good definitely worth the hype.
Roma Ryan
Long-time St. Louis resident, here and I can unequivocally say that the little gem salad is the best in the city. Just incredible. The chicken salad is dope, the evening pizza is flawless, atmosphere is cozy, pizza rossa is excellent; I’ve never had anything from Union Loafers that wasn’t a 10/10. Thank all the gods for this place.
Tamara Nelson
Great area, order lunch to go. Smoked pork sandwich on ciabatta. Their take on a Cuban. Tried the mellow sourdough as well. Chocolate chip cookie for dessert. I was offered water as I waited. Short trip from work and don't take long to get my order. Next time I'll try a soup. Only thing to change was the chips, kinda stale and not worthy of the sandwich.
Alex Goetten
Bread game is on point. Pizza is excellent. Everything about this place is dope.
Kurt Collins
We were in town to visit my son and he suggested that we go here. They were crazy busy and I suggest that you check in on line. Our wait was 1.5 hours. We got the burnt toast for a starter and it was delicious. We also ordered a pepperoni pizza and chocolate chip cookies. Both were equally as good. Will definitely go back.
Joe
A very modern place. They have good pizza, but it's not particularly thick or rich. For the amount you do get though, it's very tasty. They only offer sodas in cans. The inside of the restaurant is very bright, but is actually pretty tight, hard to move around in there.
Patrick H
Clean, classy, well-lit space. Some of the best bread I've had, and the pizza might be the best in St. Louis. A tad pricey, but the quality and service justifies it. Don't miss the cocktails, either (I recommend the Aperol Spritz or New Fashioned.)
Gregg Thompson
Its been awhile since this New Yorker / Pizza Maker ate at Loafers but I had to give them 5 Stars. Have lived in the area for 3 years now and the best Ny Style pizza I have had here was at Loafers. I need to go back!
Pamela Hsu
Favorite neighborhood spot, dope bread and pizza. Delicious sandwiches that I could eat everyday for lunch along with a coffee soda and a really nice selection of funky and interesting wines. Love love LOVE.
Izzy Litwack
Wowowowow. I wanted to post a photo of our food but we ate it too quickly because it was delicious. My biggest suggestion is to get the bread and ricotta dip, and the marinara dip, and combine. Great pizza and chocolate chip cookies too!!
Subscription Services
Menu selections are a little limited, but the food is amazing. As a vegetarian, I particularly love the unique flavor combinations on the smoked beet sandwich and dill potato salad on the lunch menu. Pricing is high but the quality of ingredients offered is excellent.
There is usually a wait at lunchtime, as seating is limited in the restaurant, but the wait can be avoided if you arrive at 11am or 2pm.
Kmart
Wow. Incredibly good and worth the wait. Once we sat down, our order was out before a few sips of water were consumed. The roast beef is just amazing and something I wouldn't normally order anywhere else. A PB&J was shared at the table and might be the best I've ever had. Just make sure you don't have a tight schedule before deciding to come here.
Alex Garcini
This is my favorite place to eat in St Louis hands down! Everything is delicious: highlights are the pastrami reuben (usually a Saturday lunch special), the turkey and swiss, and the chicken and rice soup. I could have that soup for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and I still wouldn’t get tired of it! And the pizza is amazing!!! Don’t miss the spinach and bacon or the pepperoni 🍕
Rich Merritt
Excellent bread. We had soup, salad, and sandwiches that were delightful. But the bread was the highlight of the day. Great crust. Soft and tasty on the inside. The marbled rye wins the prize. I was surprised that the bakery opened at 11 am. No early baking for these folks. The place was packed with diners within 20 minutes of opening. I'm going back soon and often.
Robert Chandler
A little pricey, but Very good food! The roast beef is very good, but is spicy due to horseradish. Their bread very good, but also very chewy. The Turkey and swiss was good, my son loved the Nutter sandwich, and the Kale & Garbanzo soup was amazing.
J.T. Mills
Everything is made in house with exception of the chips. Got a sandwich/salad that was fresh and filling. Lines form fast so get there early for lunch or there will be a long wait. Located in a quiet block just north of the botanical gardens. Outdoor seating is available and the interior of the restaurant is cozy. Definitely a must if you like soup and sandwich spots.
Christopher Zachary
Absolutely amazing Pizza, excellent serves and while the menu is short every choice is good! Try the spinach and bacon!
Phillip Clark
I’m here just for the bread.. it’s good, just good. I took the light and mild sourdough home, cut some slices, rubbed garlic on them, then made the best grilled cheese I’ve had in a while.
Dale Carlson
Loved this gem of a restaurant. Great atmosphere. Great service and the fresh breads are amazing. It’s not a bakery in the normal sense with a counter. It’s a sit down restaurant where you place your order for your take home bread when you order your meal. We hit a sourdough and it’s awesome.
Jim McBride
Best sandwiches. Little gem salad is epic. Everyone else knows it as well - and you can expect a healthy wait. Coupled with St Louis diners camping technique (why yes we are done eating, yes we have paid, yes we are going to chat over our empty water glasses for 45minutes while the 30 people standing behind us against the wall waiting for a seat look on forlornly) it makes for a pro-level table waiting experience. Eat, pay, LEAVE people. It's worth it though.
Davy Jia
Anazing bread, sandwiches, and pizza. Rare roast beef sandwich and chicken soup really blew me away with the flavor.
Service is hit or miss, the servers have all been amazing and attentive, but we did have a bartender who gave off the impression we were bothering her whenever we asked for things like recommendations or more water.
Short story: come here, avoid bar
Linda Sackeyfio
Salad and sandwiches are by far the freshest and tastiest I’ve eaten in the St. Louis area.
Definitely deserves 5 plus, unfortunately I was disappointed with an employee’s character on my initial visit.
Bojan Nedic
Their sandwiches are phenomenal, because they start with amazing bread. The filling is great--don't get me wrong--but the bread is the real bread-winner in the relationship.
Pretty packed place. The bread is also for sale, but you pay for the quality at around $8 a loaf.
Tyler Doyle
Salad is the highlight here, and they've never gotten it wrong. Delicious sandwiches back it up, and in the evenings, real Napolitano pizza is served. For me, the flavor was perfect, but the crust was significantly overdone. What could've been a great pie turned out to be an okay one, but I believe they had someone new working the oven. It's gonna happen.
Tristan Stolz
Cannot recommend this enough. I live in the neighborhood and probably get union a couple times a month if not every week. It's reliable, consistently very tasty food. Additionally we get their bread during the holidays. I just wish I could find their recipe for the potato salad-which I never liked until I tried theirs. Yum. Yum.
Laura MacCaskey
Another epicurean treasure in St Louis. When you want really well crafted bread, this is the place. People are friendly, service is superb, their cocktail specialty is delicious. Great for those cold winter evenings or dining al fresco during the summer. The best homemade from-scratch pizza. Two words: chili oil.
Lauren A
This place is the best. The food is accessible to everyone, from people who just like bread and sandwiches to people who are looking for an exceptional food experience. Service is great, bar is great, bread is great. I also heard a French guy telling someone that their baguettes are better than the ones he gets in Paris.
alex gummy
Best pizza in St. Louis if you can get one. Right now they have curbside only and you'll have to reserve one that morning and set a time to get it. They also aren't the regular 18 inch ones you get just 10 inch uncut for now. Hopefully we can get through Covid so they can open back up fully.
Sarah S
Staff is really nice and food is exceptional. Worth the price. Some of the best bread I've had in the country...rivals La Brea bakery! Food is high quality
Mary M
The pizza. I cannot rave hard enough. The classic or sausage (with the spicy chilis added) are our freaking jam. Their Italian salad is legitimately my favorite salad I’ve ever had.
The wait can be long, but it is 100% worth it. Check out the No Wait app if you’re planning to dine-in. If you’d rather skip the wait, call in your pizza ahead of time and pick it up instead!
My favorite pizza anywhere, and as a restaurant, easily in my top 3 of STL. Try it out, & join the long list of Loafers lovers!
Lou Asinger
Best bread in the region!! The sandwiches are simple yet beautiful. Nothing arrogant or trendsetting. Get there early or be prepared to wait. You call tell the owners/staff are really proud of what they do and they are very good at it. Bread the way it's suppose to be!
Lowell Ricketts
In addition to artisanal bread to go, Union Loafers offers a dine-in experience that is outstanding. The sandwiches are simply the best you will find anywhere. The foundation of each is of course the bread. But also includes quality meats and spreads. Try the roasted pork for a delicious alternative take on the Cuban. We've taken many of our visiting friends and it has left a lasting impression on all of their trips. The tap list is also well curated and pairs well with the fare.
Annie Blount
Love the salads! Each one is a little flavor explosion of freshness. The incorporation of the breadcrumbs adds a unique texture experience. Pizza and sandwiches are good as well. Fresh ingredients in a laid back setting.
Cher Blevins
Enjoyed lunch with a friend at Union Loafers. I didn't quite know what to expect, but the restaurant is very modern and pretty. The staff was very friendly without hovering, and made good recommendations. My sandwich was incredible, and I bought 2 loaves of bread before leaving. I regret not getting the beet sandwich - but I'll be back to try it soon.
Michael Lee
The Gem is the best salad I've ever had. Great sandwiches (of the regular menu, I like roast beef the most). The hot sandwich special they have on weekends (Friday/Saturday I think) is usually delicious.
Dan Story
Had the roasted pork sandwich and turkey sandwich. Both incredible. Really huge portions.
Went home with a rye loaf and I've been looking for ways to use it with every meal.
Service was fast and friendly. Loved the atmosphere. Lot's of natural lighting plays off the beautiful re-purposed bowling lanes turned into bar top. Once the beer is on tap, this will become one of our regular lunch joints.
Leo Holtz
You can't have a great sandwich without great bread, and Union Loafers brings the heat. Consistency is a virtue in the restaurant game, and they're about as virtuous as they come. One of my favorites in stl. Pizza Rosa is prime, but, if you get a chance, their sandwiches are too epic for words.
Walter Grant
High quality pizza for a great price. This is my go-to place with me and my friends. We absolutely love it. I highly recommend the bacon and spinach pizza it is phenomenal.
Jake Kremer
Just went for the first time this weekend, and I'm kicking myself for not making it down sooner. Great atmosphere and quite possibly the best pizza in STL. The spinach pizza is a must have. Can't wait to go back and try the sandwiches for lunch.
Amanda Todorovic
I've been for both lunch and dinner now and both are amazing! I had the roast beef sandwich. Perfectly medium rare, delicious sauer kraut (I didn't know I could like sauer kraut) and crunchy soft bread! The pizza was one of the best in st louis. I bought a load of the sour dough rye and finished it the same day. Can't wait to go back!
Joshua Weinstock
Some of the pizza in STL and great fresh bread.
julie beckman
Officially my favorite pizza in St. Louis. I also cannot pass by without grabbing a loaf of bread for home.
Alexandra Bothmann
The food is fantastic and reliable. The Little Gem Salad (add beets) is probably the best salad I've ever had.
Checking in on Yelp on the weekends makes these lunch plans hassle free.
Griffin Tyner
Nice atmosphere, fantastic service, didn't love the pizza though. The pepperoni we ordered was slightly burnt on the bottom and very greasy. This was my first time though so I'll probably go back.
Jen Krawitz
AMAZING bread! I got their butter rolls for Thanksgiving and they are heavenly!! Pretzel with mustartd... yummy. Oat bread with cranberry delish. I can't wait to try the pizza, salads are excellent and staff is friendly and knowledgeable
kyle johnson
Great, great food. Amazing bread. Really annoying that they will only slice bread for you when they aren’t serving food, which amounts to like two hours in the middle of the day. The “solution” I was presented with was a $24 bread knife that they offered to add my order. I am 10000% in favor of bakeries that make glorious bread like this. Just please, if I’m paying $10 for a loaf... slice it for me.
Jamison Ousley
Had a delicious roast beef on ciabatta with a coffee soda for lunch here. My friend, who is a baker, recommended this place, and the baked goods are clearly their strength. The drinks are original and delicious, but I will say this is a pricy place to grab lunch. They're efficient, but I think they might be better at dinnertime.
JoyA Piazza
Finally found a source for San Francisco style sourdough and it's perfection! Tried one of their sandwiches, too, which I will also do again. Bravo.
Mark T
First, the food is good (Potato bread was a little burnt), but a little short if great. Service was very good as well. The lost star was due to the long wait and their notification system. Was told it would be 45 minutes when I arrived, ok, I will go for a walk. Then minutes later, get a notification a table is ready, when I got back it was too late and get shuffled to the bottom of the deck again, like really, no they got their estimate way wrong, so Ok with having to wait longer due yo not getting back on time, but keep us at the top of the stack. So despite the food being OK, it was not worth the wait.
Patrick Reed
We make the drive from St. Charles, just for their amazing sandwiches and breads. I'm so bummed that we're just now discovering it. Priced right, and holy moly is everything delicious.
Brett Frazer
Great pizzas, add bacon to the Mushroom. The buttermilk dipping sauce is the bomb
Christy Allen
If you can catch them when they're open you're WINNNING! Staff is ok but the food & bread specificlly are ahhhhmazing. My favs are the Garbanzo soup & Little Gem salad. Both are excellent vegan options simply request a sub for the usual buttermilk dressing included with the salad.
Cocktails, pizza & other items available during dinner hours. The huge chocolate chip cookies are also delish. Samples of the bread ar e usually out for your enjoyment during lunch at the back entrance/carry-out counter.
Enjoy!
Richard Schneider
Amazing food and great atmosphere
Darryl Walker
They said I'm on a restricted diet, I said have you tasted their bread! They said I shouldn't eat the whole thing, I said have you tasted their bread! I don't care... I was given some in the hospital following my stroke and let me say this..it was all I ate for 3 days... It's my medicine... I'm so grateful for the way they take care of baking such wonderful bread and other foods... Wish I could give them 100 stars...great product and terrific people..
Mike Chartier
You absolutely must go during the day and get the cheesy bread (though I came back for the pizza at night, get the Marinara). They have a rosé on tap that is perfect for a sunny afternoon; and you're making a mistake if you don't try one of the cookies.
Linda B
Wonderful food, trendy location and service. Will be back often.
Kate Boelhauf
Order the smoked beet sandwich!! It's a vegetarian's dream - unique & full of flavor. I was *kind* enough to let my meat eating friend taste mine and he made me promise to bring him back so he could order that the next time.
Elizabeth Mouron
Awesome sandwiches and bread. Awesome pizza. Great beer and wine selection. Wait staff is always pleasant. Only complaint is the wait, but there's only a wait because it's so good!
Ian McIntire
Expensive. That's all I could think before I got my food and $4.50 cup of coffee. Then I drank said coffee and realized it was the best coffee I've ever had. Then I realized there were free refills. And when the food came out, it was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. Honestly, the sandwich was pretty simple but everything on it was homemade, from the mayo to the bread to the pickles. Don't even get me started on those pickles. All meats and cheeses are locally sourced and so is the beer (which is great on a lunch break, just saying.)
Paul sturmanator
Best Caesar salad I had in years.
Connor FitzGerald
Went there for lunch; it was excellent all around. The food, service, and atmosphere showed great attention to detail on all levels. Would absolutely recommend the roast beef sandwich. Also, the bread that they sell in the other side of the restaurant was great to take home.
Skye P.
We went for the first time to Union Loafers just to try some bread from the bakery, and it was absolutely amazing. The service was also really wonderful when we were there (especially being first-timers). I'm looking forward to going back for an actual meal.
Nathaniel Bozarth
A bridal shower is a great opportunity for a man to go on a romp through the city with a longtime pal. And that's just what I did on a frigid January afternoon while my wife watched the bride-to-be open what I heard to be a veritable summit of neatly wrapped packages.
After digging through musty bins of 12" at Vintage Vinyl, it was time for lunch. A naturally yeasted bread atficionado, I suggested we try out neighborhood haunt Union Loafers.
Unfortunately, the rest of the neighborhood had made the same decision. Limited seating available, the wait time was north of 60 minutes. So we walked around the corner to the retail entrance to snag a bit of cheesy bread (I think it could be called a type foccaccia?) And a loaf to go.
A slice of cheesy bread turned out to be two 4" squares. Perfect for sharing, one for me, one for my panophile pal. It was delicious. Great chewy texture with an exterior crunch. Tangy sticky cheese throughout.
I also got a small load of the German rye bread. Took it home and had a slice (it comes pre-sliced!) for a snack while watching SNL. Toasted it with a bit of butter. My German ancestors were proud. Another slam dunk.
Besides the introductory bummer that the wait exceeded the patience of our stomachs, it was a winning experience. I look forward to going back for a full lunch. They have pizza and sandwiches to choose from. All served on fresh baked bread or homemade dough.
Brian Lane
Very good! Everything is fresh and it shines through in the flavors. Cheesy bread is delicious as well as their salads. I recommend using the No Wait App, it helps the Hosts.
Ellen Christensen
Yummy turkey and swiss sandwhich, salad, and cherry citrus soda! Thoroughly enjoyed. I'm excited to try their pizza!
Ashley Serrano-Ziel
The classic pizza is fantastic! I think the crust was overcooked by just a smidge. Nearly too hard to eat, but tasty! Im looking forward to trying their other pizzas in the future.
Ryan Stack
Gather round, and let me tell you a little story about the fine establishment by the name of Union Loafers. It was a sunny spring morning with friends; the leftover brandy and marjoram from last night's fine Italian feast ripping through my veins . A pang hit my stomach, extraneous of the dehydration from hours of digestifs and salty wild-game meats. No, my friends, this was something else: appetence for a proper sandwich. The Roasted Pork! The Roasted Beef! The Lunch Special (1/2 Sandwich + Soup or Salad)! I'd had them all before, each seeming more succulent and appropriate than the last. Nonetheless, I opted for a personal order of cheesy bread (don't skip this), a Little Gem Salad with Bacon (don't skip this either), and a Turkey Swiss. Magnifico! Fantastico assolutament! Union Loafers had done it again. The staff is Midwestern-kind, the food is consistently full of flavors, and the clientele, despite the restaurant's "hipster-forward reputation" (whatever that means), is diverse and delightful. It wasn't my first trip to Union Loafers, and it certainly won't be the last.
Justin Siegel
Best pizza in St. Louis, working on nation-wide! Pepperoni & Calabria chilis spot on with the perfect combination of cheese; oh, and the crust brings it all together. ♥️🍕 …
Nancy Carlson
The best bread, sandwiches and pizza in St. Louis!
Angie Meuth
The absolute best bread in St. Louis. Staff is always on point and the restaurant is always busy but still feels relaxed. On of my favorite spots to have lunch!
Meghan Goudy
One of my favorite lunch spots. The little gem salad is delicious and is even better if you add bacon. Best bread in St. Louis!
yoo mi Jun
The place is packed and busy. Our food came out about 20mins. My chicken soup was pretty decent but my husband didn't like the sandwich. I am not sure if I am coming back but good luck to them.
Aaron Joyce
It's always refreshing to see a restaurant run this smoothly and cleanly. The text notifications meant we were able to go look at nearby businesses while we waited for our table, and the food was worth waiting for. We really enjoyed it!
Jared McAllister
Always great food for lunch and dinner! For best results though, go for Sunday lunch and get the hot pastrami special and the Little Gem salad with bacon. It's a fantastic meal for 2.
Emma Seidel
Union Loafers is the kind of place that's one the first restaurants you come back to if you used to live in STL and moved away (or at least that's my plan). The little gem isn't to be missed, nor is the pepperoni pizza, or any of the pizzas, or the fresh cheese and burnt toast, or the cookie, or the trout salad sandwich (usually Fri&Sat only) or the BREAD, or anything on the menu.
Chris Gluck
Best bread in St. Louis... addictive. Pizza is amazing too and go with the buttermilk sauce on the side.
Michael Marvaso
Union Loafers has some of the best pizza in town. Love the crust. And the Caesar salad is amazing. This is definitely my go to place when I want pizza and salad.
Neeraj Joshi
Everything they make is delicious. Wish I could eat here everyday but we settle for once a month. If you are in doubt definitely order from here or go visit them in person!
Linda Rasch
We have bought their bread loafs twice. Their bread is excellent. Worth the drive from St Albans area.
Annie Lehrer
Simple and DELICIOUS neighborhood bakery. Best bread in town. Don't miss the pizza... Only served during evening hours. A true gem of the Botanical Heights neighborhood!
Bryan Marchant
Excellent pizza and bread, quirky atmosphere and a rotating draft selection that always features a few European beers you probably havent heard of. Union Loafers is now my go to pizza place in St Louis.
Joe Ivancic
I am obsessed with Union Loafers. I’ve made a point to try all of their breads and haven’t been let down once. Currently the potato bread is my favorite, but I have a feeling that will change because I think my favorite just happens to be whatever I’m eating at that moment. Also their cheese bread is so good my carbo-phobic wife insist on getting an order every time we’re here. My only complaint is that I used to enjoy baking bread at home, but Union Loafers bread is so good that now I end up just buying theirs instead.
Tokmota
Absolutely love the pretzels! I get some every time I'm in town from the west coast!!
Geoffrey Bricker
Sandwiches extrordinere. Great ambience. Indoor and outdoor seating. Unusual flavors.
Angela Phillips
Oh my God, the food! The bread with their homemade soft spreadable cheese with herbs! The salads. The pizzas!! I love bringing people there for their first time. It's that special.
Brendan Knapp
Great sandwiches. Busy place.
Update for 2021: the pizzas are still excellent, but they decreased the size while raising the price, which is unfortunate.
Tim Defosset
Amazing artisan bread. Stop in for lunch too - it's delicious. The smoked beet sandwich is yummy vegetarian comfort food which can be hard to find in the Midwest.
Jacob Cange
Clean, quick, delicious and local. What's not to love? Stop by this boutique-style lunch counter to sit down or pick up to eat a full menu of tasty eats and locally baked bread!
Hye Keeley
Pizza is one of the best in St. Louis.
Caesar salad is amazing.
Chocolate chip cookie for dessert is perfect to finish your day.
Florinda FitzGibbon
Lunched at Loafers today. Oh Ted, the bread! Loved the fresh dill in the gem salads. Great friendly service. Wonderful eye pleasing environment. Took home some bread and immediately pulled off the heel slather it in butter...........YUM! I'm sure I'll be back with the week. Many thanks .
Casey Peetz
This is one of my favorite places to eat in St. Louis. Their food is awesome, whether you dine or or take it to go.
Jessica071688
Went here with some co workers for lunch and the bread is amazing! They have very good simple sandwiches. A place that can do something simple and do it right. I would highly recommend this place to anyone.
The Boxman
If you don't know about this place you should be ashamed of yourself. The sandwiches they come up with are amazing. Smoked beets and sauerkraut sounds like it would be a mistake but it was a sandwich i can't stop telling everyone about. This place is done right and it really good!
Beth Guckes
The kale and garbonzo bean soup is thick and creamy and oh so good. All the sandwiches use simple high quality ingredients and the bread is fantastic.
Petunia S
Fabulous bread--chewy with a firm crunchy crust--and tasty salads. I robbed them of a star simply because the 2-top tables are so close together I felt like I had dinner with two sets of strangers.
Terri Walker
Until today had never been to this Remarkable quaint space! Delicious looking breads and sammies! great staff ALMOST across the board. The greeting staffsman and bartender's were quite rude snarky and condescending! Had I not been on delivery my instinct would have told me to depart and at that moment the gentleman with the white long sleeve Levi dress shirt came over and took care of me customer service wise so I got over it and got back to ambiance provided. It was almost as if I was in a bigger city say like Seattle or New York... where the little nooked and crannied modern chic places like this can be found in abundance. it's a great compliment to St.Louis however the staff needs a customer service etiquette impromptu training just as a refresher for those who don't practice it...rule of thumb beautiful people shouldn't be jerks.
Becky Allhands (Material Whimsey)
Excellent food, excellent service, and great atmosphere! Their bread and pizza is in point and you can taste that that use quality ingredients.
Erin Pernikoff
Always amazing! Smoked beet sandwich is my favorite! Make sure to use No Wait after noon or you may be waiting a bit but it's definitely worth the wait!
Kristen Camille Giltner
Amazing. Simply amazing. We stop in for bread every other week or so; lunch about once a month... Never a bad experience. Can't wait to try the pizza!
Stephanie DiDonato
Absolutely love Union Loafers! The sandwiches, salads, breads, everything! You know you are getting quality fresh ingredients and the service is great too! Best Nut Butter sandwich!
B Gonsalez
Small menu but the offerings are excellent! The homemade bread is the best I've had since I was in San Francisco. Staff is welcoming and knowledgeable.
Ryley Thompson
Little gem salad. LITTLE GEM SALAD!!! Seriously, get it now, WITH BACON, duh. I think the secret ingredient is the dill. It's some kinda wonderful. The Sammies are spectacular as well with the (in house made) bread being a huge highlight.
corey jedi
Best bread in St. Louis. Great food. The rare roast beef sandwich is so good as well as the little gem salad!
Chris Thomas
Great bread. Good lunch. Lunch items feature their bread with mostly sandwiches. They also tend to have a salad and a soup. Try the pretzels or the cheesy bread as an appetizer or a snack.
Matthew Molitor
Best bread in the Lou, hands down, and great food to go with it. Not many vegetarian options, but there’s always something. Upbeat, positive, friendly vibe, maybe a little clicky... but that’s St Louis.
Christina Ceville
The ciabatta sandwich bread was really hard which made the sandwiches subpar. The loaf of bread we bought was burnt. The soup, soda, and salad we got were delicious. Disappointed in the bread.
Justin Perna
Was passing through stl and a friend recommended stopping by. Union Loafers has some of the best fresh bread I've ever had.
Jared Fryman
Roast beef sandwich was great! I'll be back for more 👍 …
KB Raif MD
Love the bread from this place. One of The best baguettes I have ever had, nice crunchy crust, great tasty dough and does not get rock hard after a day.
Bev Sloan
Their food was fresh made and all sandwiches had fresh made bread. Good food and service, but quite noise. We had soup, salad and sandwiches between us and all was quite tasty.
Eva Shou
Always delicious and season selections like trout salad sandwich was delicious and refreshing. Fast and super great service.
Richard Stratton
I'm a baker and the bread they make here absolutely enrages me because I know I'll never get close to it myself. When I think of how amazing the sandwiches and pizza are too, it almost makes me want to throw in my apron for good. Completely lives up to the hype. Get here.
chris mattler
I really liked this restaurant. Cool vibe, good pizza. The signature cocktail was underwhelming and didn't seem to pair with pizza, but overall I liked the fresh ideas of this cozy pizza place.
Joshua King
Breads are amazing, sandwiches and soups are nothing less. The cranberry bread they had at Christmas had to have been loaded with crack, we killed a whole loaf in less than 30 minutes, it was that good.
Allynson Ford
Hands down, the best Chicken and rice soup ever!!! It's filling, tasty and healthy. Also, you can't beat the fresh ciabatta bread too.
Anne Cardenas
Good food and service. We had to wait quite a while and there is no place to wait except to stand against the wall. If the day hadn't been so hot, we could have say outside with less wait. I would try it again though.
Katie Donovan
Really amazing food! The turkey and swiss sandwich, the gem salad, and the beet sandwich are phenomenal. Great, friendly service, amazing bread!
Allison A
Wonderful pizza, wonderful bread. It can be busy, so go early, if you go on a weekend. You won't regret it. Enjoy!
Steve Anderson
More than just a baker, they have a menu that changes to the season, is always fresh, and a dynamic but relaxed dining experience. Good selection of beer and wine, too.
Rich Reese
Had the pizza and cookies! Really good food and fun place.
Rob Marshall
The kids loved their pretzels and the Toscano was delicious. Next time we gotta try the flat bread pizza.
JASON MOSER
The pretty hostess with short hair that works the carry out is the best. Great service. Fresh bread. Can't beat it. Little pricey but worth it.
Michael Banks
I stopped in for lunch had a sandwich and salad which was tasteful. I purchased bread and extra salad dressing for my salad which help put extra special taste. The staff was friendly. I will stop for pizza soon.
John Flack
Hands down the best pizza in St Louis. Sandwiches, salads, soups and naked goods are also of the highest artisan quality.
Anish Mitra
The kale garbanzo soup can only be described as a heavenly artifact. Combine with a sandwich or some pizza rossi and I think you're in for an awesome lunch!
Ryan Kondo
Amazing atmosphere, staff & food!
Michelle Anderson
It was very busy I had to wait...they txt you when your table is ready! Thought that was nice so much better than standing around with a buzzer for 30min. The food and service was really good.
Chelsey Carter
Amazing cookies and sandwiches! One of the best artisanal sandwich and pizza shops!
Ralph C
My girlfriend and I ate here for the first time and were very impressed. The staff was fantastic and the food was even better. It's not a cheap place to eat but the prices reflected the quality.
kimberly
Really delicious and fresh sandwiches. I got a loaf of sourdough as a gift. I intended to share it but changed my mind and kept it all to myself. Perfect snack: cheesy bread!
Darryl Walker
Ok look, stop playing yourself short. I tried the chocolate chip cookie today, ok well I made it 3 blocks away and it called me, so I pulled over and OMG it was so good, THEY TRICKED ME! Took my mind off the bread and I ate the cookie sp the bread made it to my house, doesn't matter, everything there is good..
Jason Hoffarth
great lunch options, the pork sandwich and the special of open faced lox were both very good and then their bread selection is phenomenal and they all taste great.
Zach Williams
Union Loafers is the best pizza and best sandwich place in the city. I pray every day they decide to open a second location in the Central West End (please guys?!)
Nat Naz
we have been to this restaurant a few times and each time it has been a pleasure. Last time we had the Pizza and salads . They were great
Peter Kilpatrick
This was a good place to eat. Very popular and busy. I enjoyed my reuben, which was the special. This place is a bit pricy for me, 15-20 for lunch, but very good.
Deborah Schmidt
The burnt toast and spread is wonderfully addictive. Pizza is good too.
Dan Conner
Absolutely LOVE Union Loafers !!! Not only does this bread taste amazing and decadent, but its also very nutritious an leaves you feeling light and healthy! (unlike most other bread)
Biff Burns
Yikes. Waaay too crowded with quasi-neo-trendy people and cute couples. Many of the offerings are pedestrian and the bread isn't as exceptional as they'd like to make you think. Sorry.
Sally Hammes
Fantastic food. Great flavors. Loved the total gem salad. Chic salad sandwich very good . Will definitely be back !
Keith Abkemeier
Delicious sandwiches on their lunch menu with the little gem salad makes a great meal!
Marcus Aton
The breadmaking skills are top notch, but on two separate visits I found that the aloof attitude of the employees left something to be desired.
J. Martinez
The pizza is SO. GOOD. The first time we went, we couldn't stop talking about how much we enjoyed it. Good thing we had leftovers!
Rich Ciciora
The rare roast beef sandwich was delicious. Hoped for a better side than kettle chips - they said no substitutions allowed.
Jason Cohen
Fantastic marinara pizza.
Leo Ward
Gem salad with the bacon nibs is a great start--honestly the variety of sandwich doesn't matter because all of the bread's that good.
lonnie Hughes
Love the cheese bread but will have to revisit to try some the other dishes before forming an opinion about the menu.
Tod B
We tried to eat here but the wait was going to be close to 2 hours. Something seems to be wrong with a place serving pizza with a 2 hour wait. No matter how good. We went across the street to Olio.
Linda Wessels
Great, delicious food, especially roast beef. Efficient pickup - and recyclable take out containers. Will definitely revisit.
Crystal Kueker
Delicious pizza. Small seating area so check in ahead of time. Get some bread, pretzel or cookie to go.
Tommy Manson
The little gem is sooo good! They are known for their bread.
Susan Vagnino
Get the pepperoni pizza and buttermilk dipping sauce. Their pizza is amazing and the buttermilk ranch is great as a salad dressing.

Jennifer Warren
Love everything about this place. Staff is awesome, the food is delicious and the bread is some of the best we've had - a St Louis destination!!!
Jess Marks
Unbelievably simple and awesome pizza. And don’t even get me started on the house baked bread, there’s a reason you almost have to battle other people for the daily allotments. lol.
Mike Fischer

Delicious food but it’s super noisy inside. Some sound traps would be great for the space, I felt like I had to yell across the table to be heard.
