Reviews of Grand Central Bakery - Wallingford
Leigh Wright
Their breakfast sandwiches are so amazing. Their eggs are extremely fresh and cooked to perfection. Staff is so kind, they have been short staffed but the staff wouldn’t make you think that. Will be going here regularly now.

As the name suggests, lots of bakery options with good coffee. There’s a good variety of vegetarian sandwiches, and some goods to help cook at home too.
It’s somewhat expensive - $12 for a veggie sandwich.

Got a sourdough loaf, and a pretty-good breakfast sandwich. I’ll likely try the bacon next time, as the sausage was a smidge on the bland side.

Newly opened bakery right in the middle of "downtown" Wallingford! They're currently still in soft opening, but a sign outside their door says that they'll be starting regular hours tomorrow. Ambiance is very relaxed, with seating capacity of maybe 25-30 on tables and another 15 for bar seating. Interior is quite large for a bakery, with high ceilings and a good lighting. Lots of families when I went.
I ordered a latte, chocolate croissant, and their sausage egg biscuit. The pastry and latte were both good; the sausage biscuit was a little plain, but otherwise decent. Service was timely in spite of the soft opening, and everyone was very friendly. I'd give a 5 star for the location and vibe, and a 4 star for the food.

My favorite bakery newly opened in the "heart" of Wallingford! Some of the best bread in Seattle. Amazing breakfast with great service.
Want to try a bread? Ask for a sample!

Stopped in for a Ruben Sandwich. It was very good. The slaw they put on it is very sour and very very good. Grab some napkins and enjoy!!! Peanut butter cookie good also.

Amazing restaurant to have in the Wallingford neighborhood. It's like a better version of Panera. Great bakery items and great service. Definitely recommend for a quick bite or stop in before heading to work. The breakfast biscuit sandwiches are great!

Honestly, I'm not quite sure what all the 5 star reviews are about.
I'm a foodie, I love trying new places and I go off of reviews quite a bit so I don't feel my money was wasted.
For Grand Central Bakery, my friend & I had high expectations. The reviews ranted about their baked goods. So naturally, we went there to get some baked goods at the Bakery.
We ordered an Ice Roll, a Cinnamon roll and quiche and a pumpkin spiced espresso.
I'm not sure quite how to put this. I felt, for the price, we would have been better off going to the grocery store and buying a Pillsbury cinnamon roll can and baking our own and that would have been 100x and I do mean 100 times better.
The Iceroll, tasted like it was icing put on a slice of white wonder bread. It was bland, and the icing lacked luster.
The cinnamon roll didn't have icing on it, it was an overcooked brick, that was slightly moist in the center and there wasn't really an existing gooey factor.
It tasted more like cinnamon bread, when you place butter on bread, ad cinnamon and sugar and bake it.
Except, this cinnamon roll seemed like it wasn't even made with butter. It was hard, with a ton of cinnamon put on top of it, and bland.
Now the quiche, the saving grace of the $20 experience. It was actually done pretty well, the crust was light and the egg was done almost correctly. My friend really liked the pudding like egg mixture where as I prefer my quiche to be a little more firm (similar to egg bites from Starbucks)
However, the flavor of the quiche was on point. I just wasn't a fan of the egg texture and look seeming slightly undercooked.
Overall, I wouldn't say a professional baker is responsible for these treats, it seems like someone who just started baking who doesn't taste their product or know what a cinnamon roll is supposed to taste like made these.
I was pretty disappointed. Hopefully they pay attention to their reviews and try to make corrections. If they reach out and make some adjustments, I'd be more than happy to give them another chance.
Grand Central Bakery, I'm sorry to say, you didn't make the cut. Please educate your bakers on how to properly prepare and bake their items better or I can see this business lasting only because of location, not because of taste.

I try to love this place, but they can't seem to get my order right. I've been here 4 times now, and each time there have been issues with my coffee order. The espresso machine is either broken or employees are not trained to use it. Nonetheless they keep on selling me espresso to then call me back offering decaf or drip coffee. Additionally there are too many stools at the street side window, it's impossible to squeeze through without removing a stool first. Summarized: I am doing my best to love this place, but it's not running smooth at this moment.
Update: The espresso problems are behind us! Next problem: Vent is blasting cold air, it's freezing here, it's warmer outside (and it's winter).

Good breakfast, nice and friendly staff! Varieties of bread, pastry and coffee and
Seasonal options are always available!

I've been a fan of Grand Central for years and used to frequent the Pioneer Square location when I worked nearby. Each time that I've visited the Wallingford location, I've unfortunately been disappointed. The food is usually good (veggie grinder & tuna melt are our favorites). That said, the wait times are consistently very long and unpredictable. I am fully sympathetic to the short-staffed situation, and that prep times might be longer than usual. That's totally fine and understandable.
But every time I pre-order lunch, I show up at the designated pick-up time (or even a few minutes late), and it has *never* been ready. Often times, I will stand around waiting for an additional 15 minutes, and the staff has never been apologetic about the very long, unexplained wait. If the wait times will continue to be drawn out, *please* update expectations for when folks make orders. The current situation makes it impossible to plan a lunch break and therefore an ineffective choice for me, so I probably will not be coming back anytime soon.

Friendly staff and delicious baked goods! I go for the jammers, but the blueberry muffins are good too.

I love this GCB. I've been many times to various locations. I love the large windows in this location. They have an awesome selection of pastries and sandwiches. I love their breakfast sandwiches on croissants and so many pastries (drool)! I usually go on weekdays, but I went on a really busy Saturday and there was a good line. I was expecting it to take forever, but nope, so pleasantly surprised how quickly I received my order. Also, do try the take home pizza dough (wheat) but do follow the directions defrosting as it does take a few hours.

A Seattle staple, you can’t go wrong coming for breakfast or lunch. I highly recommend the bacon egg croissant with avocado. The make it fresh and it takes ~10 minutes, but you’re not getting some premade semi-gross thing. Start your morning right.
Sarah Renee
Service was great - I had the croissant egg and cheese sandwich and thought it was perfect. Not too heavy or too greasy like many breakfast sandwiches you find in America. Thank god some places are practicing portion control. Do not expect to get your hot food quickly, I assume they are made to order as it was very fresh. I also like that the space has a lot of seating, giant windows and a nice patio.

First thing I noticed when coming was the bread! All so beautiful and we'll baked. Also had delicious breakfast sandwich to start the day. The crew is super nice and helpful. Parking shouldn't be bad at all, but depends on time and day. Come get your daily fix of carbs and caffeine here!
Mark Charonis
The staff and pastries are wonderful. There hours of operation are awful. They keep closing at different times. Three times I went there and they were closed when they were suppose to be open. Difficult to keep going to a place that hours vary so much.
Pamela Nygaard
Their food is ahhhh-mazing! Huge sandwiches with complex flavors an delicious combinations. Their pastries and breads are truly delicious!
Sadly, they don’t have any gluten free options, but everything that they do serve is great!

**Update 7/19/2019***
We've tried many of the sandwiches now. The worst was a breakfast sandwich with a meager egg and lonely slice of bacon in the middle of a croissant, way too many underpopulated bites. The better ones are more thought out, but the bread has been the highlight of each. Feels like they haven't done their sandwich development work - too many dry sandwiches. Make sure yours has some kind of spread or binding ingredient, get melted cheese on the breakfast sandwich, for example, otherwise you might feel disappointed by a seriously lacking sandwich.
Original review June 2019
A much anticipated and needed addition to the neighborhood! A nice largish bakery, seems to be becoming a community staple. Staff overall are helpful and friendly. Since they've opened, we've tried almost every pastry they have and a few other menu items. Some observations - baked goods are amazing and delicious, coffee good.
The current biggest issue is the line and the lack of it's management. On a more packed day, if there is a mixture of folks ordering baked goods and folks ordering just coffee and/or sandwiches, these two groups tend to split as the line reaches the bakery counter. This seems to cause confusion for both customers and the counter staff. On a slow day, if we are browsing the bakery case, just taking our time, people will cue up behind us and we have to wave them on or encourage staff to help them first. A few suggestions - 1) have a 'take a number' system, so folks can browse the bakery case and have their selection in mind when it's their turn 2) have someone at the counter guiding the line, asking people to step forward, aside, towards the counter, etc (us Wallingfordians are a leisurely, entitled bunch and tend to need more formal guidance). 3) move something around, either the rope that designates the line or the bakery case.
We love this spot and hope attention and effort will be put towards resolving the significant line issue.

Looking for a quick snack, a coffee, or a filling lunch? Look no further than Grand Central Bakery! They have an amazing selection of baked goods, coffee, tea, sandwiches, salads, take-and-bake products and more. I have tried many items including the German Ham sandwich, the Tuna Sandwich, many breakfast sandwiches/biscuits, cinnamon rolls, cookies, blondies, oat bars, croissants and much more. The only "complaint" is that they go heavy with their amazing mayo, but you would never hear me actually complain about it. Overall my favorite thing is their Japanese Method Iced Coffee, which drinks like iced tea but kicks like coffee, and the fact they give you one free refill only makes it better. Ample seating inside and out makes this an ideal place to grab a quick bite or stay and work.
Make sure to pick up a rewards card for their bread and coffee, and keep an eye out for their online ordering which is coming soon!

The best Pacific Northwest native bakery with delicious coffee.
Being a vegetarian, their veggie grinder is one of the best cold sandwiches in the Pacific Northwest. Combined with an 8oz cappuccino, it’s definitely a favorite that I continue to come back to.
Their baked pastries are totally delicious too.
Phuong Hua
Quiche is amazing. Soft and fluffy. I could eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Great service. Latte is great. Plenty of seating. Check it out.
Harriet Moxey
Super delicious pastries and sandwiches- the tuna sandwich is really good and so is the seasonal fruit danish! They have other Seattle locations too, recommend
Michael Holbrook
Delicious breakfast pastries and the little quiches are always delicious (they have veggie and meat options each day).
Adaline Simonian
The bread is just... amazing. Fluffy, soft, moist, and delicious. However, their pastries are a bit on the bready side, and it's not quite what I was looking for. Occasionally the bread is let to rise for a bit long and you end up with slices that are more air than bread. But on the whole, I still love this bakery and will be back for more!

Honestly I’m a little bummed, GC has been my go to local cafe since they opened in the neighborhood. I brought my ESA dog in to get coffee and was told by the barista that she wasn’t allowed. When I explained she’s a certified ESA I was met with rude and sarcastic behavior from a barista. I know plenty of people lie for their pets, but it just ends up leaving the people who truly need this service in social settings feel unwelcome. Case in point right here. Irwin’s and Mas Cafe are always kind and greet us with a treat so that’s where we go now.
Richard Bond
Just what you want. Try the coffee cake, or the cinnamon roll brioche. Or anything else in the display case, frankly... I go in every other week to start my weekend off and I am never disappointed.
Oh, the people are super friendly too. :)
Brigid Ciganik
Very consistent with high quality that's come to be expected from Grand Central. Got a variety of items; all were good. One constructive: staff needs to know whether rye bread contains caraway seeds (it does).
Kama
Fresh 🥪, really good. I got the blue cheese steak sandwich and loved it. I don't even like blue cheese. Everything tasted good and fresh. …
Douglas Pearson
Solid but not spectacular. It's a nice cafe setting but the bakery oddly leaves a bit to be desired to my mind. Fresh baked bread should be an amazing experience and here I just don't feel that somehow
Timothy Brown
Iced americano tasted like dishwater. Iced coffee is a better choice for sure. Cookie was decent. Breakfast sando was excellent. Staff was nice.
Linda C
Delicious food. BUT Wallingford sidewalk is very narrow and your waiting customers are not allowing social distancing from each other nor from people walking by. Please rethink where you ask people to wait? Maybe along the west side of your building on the side street? I definitely have to rethink ordering from you because this setup is so stressful.

The first time I went to GCB in Seattle, I couldn't wait to go back. My biscuit was tender, flakey, buttery, and delicious. I got the "Build Your Own" with egg over medium, avocado, and cheddar cheese. The next time I went back, I ordered the same biscuit with Swiss cheese in place of the cheddar. Here's the rub: the biscuit was so tough (over baked?), that I couldn't cut through the crust. This biscuit is close to a $10.00 investment so shouldn't they make sure that they are just right?
Sara Manning
Best quiche ever! Also, made my morning with the staffs music selection at the Wallingford location! You guys rock!
Jack Dail
Great place for fresh breakfast sandwiches and great hot coffee!! Fast friendly service.
Kai Pan
High speed WiFi and good Victrola coffee. While it was amazing to go there in the summer because the sun shines on their porch, in the winter it is frigid even inside. I wish they would improve their insulation.
SC Dolfan
Love their sourdough bread. They'll slice a loaf to take home. It's light but still chewy, and makes great toast. Unfortunately they sometimes run out.
Oneil Kwangwanh
A solid 3. I live in the neighborhood and come here often. The food and coffee is good.
Prices are on the steep end and customer service is often poor. Employees seem to treat you as an inconvenience.
Tony Dangerfield
Holy wow the sandwiches here are amazing. Very friendly service.
Natalie Le
I like their coffee and the space but the bread and pastries felt pretty average.
Frances Eckrich
Delicious bread, fantastic sandwiches, and the cookies are *divine.* Pleasant building too, you can sit outside in warm weather, or be by the open window. It's pricey, but that's what I'd expect for the Wallingford area.
Atari Betamax

Sandwiches are pretty good, but pick up not the best. Didn't know where my online order was and took a while to figure it out
Edlyn D'Souza
I love this place at its new location in Wallingford. There are lots of low-waste options if you are trying to make that a part of your routine. The staff has been extremely pleasant when it's slow and even during peak times. I really appreciate that.
