Reviews of Besalu

Small, neighborhood bakery. There is usually a line outside the door, but it goes quickly. There are benches outside for waiting and for eating, and a few tables inside as well.
Their croissants are some of the best in Seattle. They're buttery and flaky and have beautiful layers. We also tried the onion gruyere croissant. It was chocked full of flavor-- the onions were perfectly caramelized and the cheese was slightly crispy on top.

A tiny cute bakery.
There are small round tables inside, outside has benchs, a few tables and stools.
Parking may little tricky since they locates on a big road.
Small celections but they keep baking so that they restock their products pretty often. We were there on Sunday around 10 am. Busy and already a line of people.
We got 2 quiche, 2 pastries and a cup of chai.
Cardamom pretzel was amazing. Quiches were ok.
We would like to try their other pastries for next time.

"Oh snap!" is all I can say. Had a croissant with bacon and it's a good thing I was sitting down. Buttery? Check! Flaky? Check! Light and fluffy? Check! Check! My day was done after eating this bit of heaven. Do yourself a favor if in Ballard and get a bunch of these to share with friends.

Pretty cozy neighborhood bakery with a great variety of pastries and brews Herkimer coffee. There is often a short line outside the shop shortly but it moves fast, the staff is friendly and does a good job taking care of folks.
I started with their butter croissants, it's flaky and tastes pretty good. I then tried some other stuff like the chocolate pistachio babka and savory croissant. Always happy with what I got. The service was friendly and prices were fair. I would come back again when I come to this neighborhood.

Googled coffeshop and Besalu popped up.. I mentioned they had great reviews and this was my first time in. I ordered a beautiful machinations and the Barista gave me a chocolate croissant on the house! I highly recommend this place . Great customer service and coffee and awesome customer service!

Grabbed a seasonal raspberry croissant with filling. It was a nice treat to have to start the day. They had many other pastries.

I came here on a cloudy Sunday and ordered a Pain au Chocolat after a few minutes of waiting. I like the slight bitterness of the chocolate with the crispy layers of the croissant. Worth waiting in a line for this.

Best ham and cheese croissants in the city. Everyone is so nice at Besalu, and every pastry I’ve tried is consistently delicious. Because they make such yummy treats and it’s a small bakery, they can quickly form a line, but they do such a great job of moving through efficiently, so don’t let a long line deter you from a scrumptious morsel.

By far the best chocolate croissants in Seattle! Really all of their pastries I've had are phenomenal. They use coffee beans from Herkimer, and I'm a big fan of the mild earthy flavor of their coffee. Particularly the lattes are great, rich and not too sweet like some other places.

Given all the hype, I wasn't impressed with pastries, but the quiche is good.
The first time I visited, I wanted something savory but the only item left at noon on a Saturday was the spinach quiche. It was surprisingly delicious and flavorful! My slice was only about half the size of the takeout box though which is not normal when compared to pictures I've seen in other reviews.
I came another day to try their ham and cheese pastry and the gruyere and onion. They were very buttery and flakey but were *way* too salty for my taste. I could barely taste anything else. I got both on the same day so maybe it was an off day.
Not sure I'd try these pastries again, but I might come back for the quiche.

Somebody give this place an award already!?!?
Light buttery flaky melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness.

Thank you so much for making sure I got my order on Christmas Eve! I don’t know who the employee was who dropped them off at the hospital (I’m a nurse and couldn’t get there the day before because of the ice storm) but I can’t thank that person enough. The desserts were absolutely delicious-thank you guys! Favorite bakery in Seattle

Neat little neighborhood bakery coffee house place. Pastry was beyond expectations, very high end. Whoever's in the kitchen putting this stuff together has the magic. My Americano was also great, naturally sweet big coffee flavor, because they have the grind and dosing down just right and use good beans.

Worth the wait! They have a large selection of unique, delicious pastries that are well priced. I had the pistachio croissant and it was fantastic! There’s indoor and outdoor seating and the food is packaged nicely for take-away, as well. You can buy whole bean coffee in addition to your typical coffee drinks. A must visit and conveniently located near the farmer’s market!

There are three shops with Viennese pastries that compete for the top spot in Seattle - Bakery Nouveau, Besalu and Celine's. You can't go wrong with any of the pastries at any of them. I do like the location of Besalu the most.
Phenomenal savory and sweet pastries - the ham and cheese is unexpectedly good, as is the raspberry danish. The plain and chocolate croissants are fantastic as well. There is also a potato foccacia type thing that is a great mid-day brunch item.

I wanna come here everyday for their spinach quiche! Wow truly amazing!! I loved the lime cream filled croissant as well! Great baked goods
Ana Marta Carvalho
We loved the chocolate chunk cookie, the lorraine quiche and the almond chocolate croissant!
Austin Sturm
Borderline 3-4 stars. Solid pastries but not amazing. Everything could be a bit more stand out, needs almost one extra ingredient to bring it over the edge. The seating is really not a vibe, more of a take and go situation.

This place is pretty close to my place and it seems very recommended. So I gave it a try and it was really pleasant visit. I really like the quiche and the sweet pastry too. Would like to make another visit to try the other menu here :)

This place has one of the best chocolate croissants that I've ever had, and I just got back from France. The quiches are also amazing here. I heard on the weekends the lines are out the door but we went on a Monday at 11ish and there was still a small line. Very popular place.
Tricia Bentley
Fantastic baked goods. Visit early or order the night before. They sell out quickly.
They serve Herkimer coffee - some of the best coffee in Seattle - but can be hit or miss depending on barista’s ability.
But phenomenally good pastries made fresh daily.
Davis Ng
Great fruit Danish! Try the pear! The ham and cheese and onion and gruyere cheese pastries are really good too!

The most wonderful place I went to, way too often...... absolutely the best!!!
Will I ever get, as great, a ham and cheese croissant......?
Ben Elsdon-Dew
My absolute go-to for croissants/pastries in Seattle. Definitely go early in the morning to get in on the deliciousness that is a fresh flaky Chocolate croissant. The staff are super friendly and are masters at what they do. Cannot reccomend a better spot for some delicious breakfast food. Definitely anticipate a line during the weekend but know that it's worth the wait.

Incredible pastries!!! Everything tasted magnificent
Uttara Ananthakrishnan
Incredible pastry (I love their croissants) and high quality drip coffee tucked into Ballard. You order everything online and set up a pick up time. We usually order the pastries early in the morning. It is not a place you can drop by and pick up things as things get sold out pretty fast.
Alex Dor
Come here for the world-class pastries, go somewhere else for the coffee.
The pastries are 100% worth coming here for. Not only is the execution of each perfect (excellent lamination, crispy exteriors, soft but not doughy interiors), their offerings are creative (the pistachio chocolate babka, cardamom pretzel, kouign amann where are fantastic).
Where they lost a star is the coffee. I ordered a cappuccino and the execution was poor. A good cappuccino should not have large milk bubbles that create a foam cloud that sits above the coffee, and mine did. Much like how LA Mexican food is above average by default due to the fierce competition, so is Seattle with coffee. The sad thing is the coffee roaster & beans used was GOOD coffee. You can taste that rich, robust swirl of flavor at the end (so good shot extraction and a properly dialed in grinder). Just the barista didn’t take the time to properly microfoam the milk nor combine it properly.
But do come here for the pastry. The croissant was better than some I’ve had in France.
Brenna Belletti
Words cannot describe how much I love these pastries. They rival the ones I had in Paris.
Frederick Wolter
Are you are trying to avoid bread for some reason? This is the final boss you must defeat.
(During Covid, they are only taking orders online, NO phone or walk-ins unless they changed recently.)
Lucas Gerbeaux
Great pastries. Almond croissant was delicious and decadent. A little heavy on the paste but still one of the best I found in the greater Seattle area.
Shilpa Shastri
The 5-star review is for croissants only. When eaten hot off their oven, they are some of the best I have had, in any city (Paris included). They are flaky, buttery and either crunchy or soft in the right spots. My favorite is the almond chocolate one. They also have a really good chai and some good quiches (3-4 stars).
The other pastries are average, and Besalu could up their game in those areas (2-3 stars)

I've been buying their bakeries since I learned about them. Initially I was worried that they would close during COVID but instead decided to keep open and immediately switched to online ordering. I have been ordering my pastries online since the switch, I usually order them the day before or early in the morning to get the best options. They keep the quiches separate and warm; if you have drink orders you need to wait for them to prepare it when you arrive. I feel safe shopping here.

Online orders only. No in-store orders. We were in the area so tried the quiches. Melts in the mouth.
Hannah Aspen
Best pastries in Seattle!!! Our family ordered whole tarts for Thanksgiving and Christmas this year and they were soooo good. Super buttery, flaky, and the perfect mix of sweet and tart. The croissants and quiches are also delicious. The staff are super friendly and helpful, even during COVID. It's online/to-go only right now, but all of the items reheat pretty well. Highly recommend using an oven instead of a microwave, though :) Thank you Besalu for serving up such great treats!
Victor Agababov
One of the best croissants I've had in the USA. Coffee is also good and reasonably priced. Ham and cheese viennoiserie is also great, a bit on the unhealthy side, though 🤔 …

UPDATE 2021, 3 stars: I really pains me to say this but Cafe Besalu has gone down hill ever since the change in ownership, taking on a much more American bent.
The item most telling of this change are the croissants. As stated in my original review, they used to be flakey golden brown on the outside with a buttery rich interior. The most obvious difference now is their size, they have become enormous, and are now a much darker shade of brown. You have to crack through a much crunchier exterior, that has bordered on a burnt taste once or twice, to get to a much less prominent interior. Many other items have gone through this unnecessary enlargement as well. There are many more generic items like muffins and cookies that have been added in lieu of specialty French items that once filled the case as well.
I live about 30-45 minutes from the shop, and the drive used to be absolutely worth it, but now it only makes sense to go when we are in the area.
It makes me sad to see such a wonderful spot take such a dive, even before the pandemic, but I'm sure this pandemic hasn't helped. All that said, I'm glad they have stayed in business through the pandemic and I hope that in doing so, they will begin to turn around.

2016, 5 stars: Hands down the best cafe in all of Seattle. Flaky buttery croissants, perfect coffees, and mouth watering pastries. Don't be fooled by the long line, it moves very quickly and is well worth the small wait.

Tasty baked goods! It's a small quaint place. Prices are reasonable , if they went up anymore I wouldn't return.
Dislike that every establishment tries to force tipping with their digital tablet pay systems. Unfortunately, like a lot of places in Seattle, passive aggressive people with an attitude unfit for customer service often fill the roll of many customer facing positions. It's healthy to understand that at work, you're representing a business and all of it's employees as well as yourself.
I still tipped.
Orlando Miramontes
Good place for a quick cofee and some bread. I prefer Pain Au Chocolat with milk chocolate instead of dark chocolate, but it was good anyway.
Frank Guo
Small cozy bakery! Perfect place to catch up on some work or chat with friends.
Frans deWaard
We had this morning good coffee, a perfect pain au raisin and a croissant. Everything looked delicious
Unfortunately when we had the croissant later it was badly under baked and the dough inside was raw. That was a disappointment to say the least and we hope that it is an exception.
Ted M
Very fresh baked goods, strong flavorful coffee, very friendly service. I ordered more than I planned to and definitely will return for another visit.
Chase Baker
Could live the rest of my live eating here and sea wolf and don’t think I would miss out on anything. Always trying new bakeries but the consistency and flavor they put into their croissants is mind blowing.
Sue Kim
Their pastries were excellent!!. You could taste the difference. We had their croissants, leek quiche, and a blueberry danish. All were freshly baked and so delicious. It's a small place so it's best to order to go or eat quickly while some eyeball your seat.
Elisabeth Knottingham
Well worth the line out front. Stunning pastries and outstanding drinks.
Erika Nichols
My husband and I were visiting from out of town. We stopped here as my cousin is one of the bakers. We were BLOWN AWAY with how good the pastry is! Probably best pastry we have ever had. Bravo!
Joshua Cheng
So fresh and delicious… Almond and chocolate, as well as strawberry danish were amazing
Evan Wondrasek
We've been going here for years and it's always excellent. I'm a big fan of their ham and swiss, and anything with seasonal fruit. Highly recommended.
Jose Hernandez
We got a lot of pastries and I will definitely be coming back. Each of them was amazing.
- gruyere/onion croissant had a deep flavor you can only get from cheese and buttery croissants. 5/5
- croissant bread pudding was good and had the perfect level of sweetness. I'd skip the whipped cream next time. 4/5
