Reviews of The Holy Donut
Momo
Delicious!!! Definitely a must when visiting Maine. Love their coffee donuts.
Unfortunately I didn't get to this place until almost their closing time, many flavors were sold out. However, since it was almost their closing time, they did give away their donuts instead of throwing them away.
I originally bought 2 and received 2 additions for free.
Justine Vild
I stopped in because I love potatoes and I love donuts. And now, I love potato donuts. Who knew? They kind of reminded me of a cronut (croissant/donut). So delicious though. Absolutely come try them. I got the toasted coconut but I wish I could have tried one of each. Definitely one of the best donuts I've had. If I lived near Portland, I'd get some every time I was in town.
April Lee Uzarski
Received a gift card for The Holy Donut and decided to treat my coworkers. My vegan coworkers were absolutely thrilled because of the choices.
Donuts were fresh and tasty. They aren’t your typical yeast donuts but they were damn delicious. Would definitely go back!
Jon (JSR)
These donuts are to die for!! They tasted so amazing and have so many flavors to choose from! You must get here as early as possible as a lot of the flavors will be gone quick! My favorite by far is the Chai Donut and the Maple Bacon. They also have merch to buy and the sweatshirt is incredibly soft!
Gabby T
We visited Holy Donuts for the first time and got the sweet potato and lemon glaze donuts. They were both “just ok.” The lemon glaze tasted slightly artificial, but the sweet potato had a nice flavor. The latte was terrible – I threw it out after a few sips. I wouldn’t turn a Holy Donut down if it were offered to me in the future, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get one.
Cliff Roberts
I'm a big fan of donuts and had to give this a try. They are unique and I absolutely loved all the ones I had. The toasted coconut was my favorite. Make sure to get there early as it can get a line later in the morning.
MM A
Surprisingly very delicious. Very pleasant staff.
Short hours though, i think closes at 4pm.. . make sure to try out.. all the donuts were tasty, fresh with delicious fluffy, delicate inside.
I'll definitely be returning.
Jessie Klisz
Absolutely delicious donut treat! I only wish we could have tried more flavors. Definitely would recommend if you find yourself in Portland!
Eva Princess
My favorite donuts😍Totally worth the wait~
I don't even really like donuts, but these were all so delicious. The Holy Donut uses Maine potato flour in crafting their donuts, which make them extra dense, moist, and crewy. My favorite was the dark chocolate, fresh lemon, maple bacon💯 …
Jeremy Yowell
Awesome donuts and quick service (even when there's the line which forms!). The donuts we got were delicious and inventive, and the coffee very good. Would come back!
Josh
Some of the best donuts I've had since moving to the US!
The triple Berry and lemons donuts were delightful.
Subodh Nair
Was super busy and crowded. Most of the top selling items were already sold out in a couple of hours of opening the shop. The Donuts taste the same as regular ones even though they are potato based and maybe thats the reason they are so famous. Overall was a different experience and decent donuts.
Alain Desjardins
I absolutely love their donuts and if you get a chance, make sure you grab one of those bacon cheddar pocket things... They are amazing!
Denalia
The Holy Donut is proof that potatoes are delicious in any form! I stopped by around 9 am on a Wednesday and quickly obtained three donuts to try: honey lavender, pomegranate, and sweet potato ginger.
Potato donuts have a denser cakey/spongey texture compared to your typical donuts. I enjoyed all three flavors, but I must say the honey lavender and pomegranate were quite sweet (I think the icing could use less sugar to let the natural flavors shine) while the ginger was very subtle (I wish it was stronger).
Overall, I think the donuts were worth a try for the uniqueness factor. However, as much as I love potatoes, I can’t say I’d take these over Krispy Kreme…now if Krispy Kreme came out with a potato-filled donut that would be something else 🤤
Melanie Isganitis
I got 2 donuts and a cafe o lait coffee here. The check out process was a little confusing but the donuts were delicious. I loved that they had gluten free and vegan options.
Justin Rogers-Cooper
These donuts are as good as advertised. We stumbled upon a healthy line in the mid-morning, but one that moved fast. The donuts came quicker than the coffee, but given how many people wanted coffee, I’d try the coffee.
Alas, I stuck to the donuts. Each bite was as good as the last. I strongly recommend the coconut varieties. This was a solid and faster alternative to the popular bakeries nearby that catch even longer lines at peak tourist days and times. As one of those interlopers, I was glad for such a delicious alternative.
Gresa Mustafa
MUST HAVE if you’re in Maine. Line is always out the door or around the block. I’d be up early because they sell out so quickly. My favorite was the chocolate caramel coconut. If you try nothing else, get that one. Would definitely return. Been craving their donuts ever since I returned home and thought I’d leave an honest review.
Toby Bear
Fantastic donuts! Parking is a challenge especially during the week. Would go back if we ever end up in the Portland area again.
Alex Jimenez
This is my second time visiting and blew my mind again!! So incredibly delicious, very friendly and patient staff while I looked at all the options. The gluten free donuts are to DIE for and definitely no step down in quality from the others. Highly recommend for anyone spending a morning in Portland.
Blake McClard
This was a great choice for doughnuts in the Portland area. Definitely unique and unlike any we’ve had before. Took their recommendations for 3 different ones. Would rank Pomegranate #1 then Apple Coder #2. Dark Chocolate Cinnamon Sugar #3 as it was good but more of a cake like doughnut. Would recommend to family and friends.
Issac Andrew
Wow is the only word I can use to describe my experience at holy donut. I’m not much of a donut eater but I decided to try it out. Allison and her staff we’re so incredible and helping me find the perfect donut. The second I walked in I was greeted with the most pleasant smiles and everyone was so eager to help make the perfect recommendation. I honestly was thinking about creating two more emails just to give two more five star reviews because they deserve 15 stars. Holy donut I love you.
Joy
Being the doughnut lover that Mr. Joy is, we found ourselves in line for some fried dough. Even on a Monday morning at 11am, the line was pretty impressive. We waited nearly half an hour before we reached the front of the line.
Being amongst other doughnut lovers, we saw many patrons standing on front of the Donut Lover mural taking pictures in front of the wall.
There are lots of flavors to choose from, and we got a box of six to share with friends. We got two of the blueberry, after learning that blueberries are supposed to be great in Maine. The flavor was great, but I don't think I'm a big fan of mashed potato based doughnuts, because they were a little dense to me. Perhaps I need to give it another chance.
Alison LePard
The bagels are so fluffy — we tried a mixture of classic and season flavors. The chocolate sea salt was a must try. Other highlights were the vegan lemon and maple bacon.
Jenny McKee
If you spend any amount of time in Maine, you have to stop at The Holy Donut. The donuts are made from potato or sweet potato and are cake-style AKA the best kind of donut style. So many flavors to choose from, but I highly recommend the chocolate sea salt! It is so dense and tasty (and also keeps well until the next day). Be careful, you can go in wanting to get a few donuts and leave with a dozen! Also, huge thanks to Holy Donut for working hard to make the experience as safe for customers and staff as possible! All staff were wearing masks and they were limiting the number of people inside at a time. Make Holy Donut your top stop when visiting (or living in) Maine!
Joyce
Their coffee is great! The sweet potato coffee cake donut was fluffy and cakey deliciousness!
Jasmine
The Holy Donut beats Hifi Donuts any day! I made the mistake of stopping by Hifi first when arriving in Portland when I should’ve come here for a proper introduction to Maine’s famous potato donuts. ⚠️ They aren’t joking when they recommend going EARLY. They sell out fast. I went at 2PM and there were only two flavors left and 10 minutes after getting my donuts they sold their last donut and closed the shop. I made it just in the nick of time. Only critique is I wish the donuts were kept warm.
PATIENCE WILCOX
Amazing donuts. I had never had a potato flour donut before this and man oh man.... now I am going to have to fly to Maine every time I have a craving. Out of control the flavor in these bad boys. I had the dark chocolate, Maine blueberry with lemon, and the toasted coconut. I don't think you could go wrong with whatever flavors you choose. It is worth the wait, though to avoid the line I would try to go earlier in the morning on a weekday. A must try if you're in Portland.
Gabrielle Penrose
This place is seriously good. Travelling with someone with a severe gluten allergy this was like stepping into heaven. They have an amazing selection of gluten free donuts... no need to be stuck with cinnamon. Of course the regular donuts were next level too.
Natalia Aponte Borges
OH MY GOD try these with an oat chai latte and your tummy will be so happy. Great service and the yummiest donuts I’ve had in a minute 🍩 they’re also made from potato starch which makes them insanely good. …
Lisa Lee
Anytime I tell people I’m visiting Portland, they ALWAYS tell me to visit holy donut— and for good reason!! These donuts are so incredibly delicious and chewy; I’m so curious how they do it! It has almost the consistency of sourdough bread, light yet chewy, but with a deliciously sweet taste. And the flavors are all so fun (they rotate so there’s always something new to try)! My absolute favorites are the sweet potato donuts; look out for flavors on that donut base.
This time they also had savory donuts, which were just savory fillings in a fried dough. We got the spinach and cheese savory donut, which was good, but I’d recommend sticking to their classic sweet donuts. We got the old fashioned (meh), margarita, lavender honey, coffee cake (sweet potato donut), and ginger glaze (sweet potato donut, my favorite of this round).
Holy Donut is definitely a must-visit in Portland Maine!!!
Mallory Herb
We arrived at 11:45am on a Friday and were impressed with their gluten-free assortment. The donuts are larger and more filling than I expected. My husband and I each got two but saved our seconds for breakfast the next day.
While I appreciate that they serve gf, they are very dense and cake-like. If you can eat the normal ones, I HIGHLY recommend the sweet potato ginger! 👌🏼
Great iced coffee with oat milk.
There’s a park across the street so we enjoyed our treats there.
Betsy Olsson-Mackowski
This is a fun and vibrant place. Popular, full of personality, lots of unique flavors. These donuts were tasty and satisfying with a unique dense texture. Next time I will try the berry flavored donut. The Holey Donut is a must try when in Maine.
Ethan Paige
Amazing potato donuts!! The sweet potato with ginger, dark chocolate sea salt, coconut and maple bacon were all wonderful and definitely handmade. The line moved quickly and patking was a snap. Tasty beverages and friendly, speedy service, too. 👍 …
Wesley Yu
A great place for unique flavored donuts. Great if you like donuts with a light cakey texture. Large variety of flavors including seasonal flavors (summer 2021 blueberry!). I really liked the blueberry with blueberry glaze.
They have gluten free varieties as well but I haven't tried any of those flavors.
I prefer my donuts dense but I didn't let that impact my review.
Samantha Sherwin
Worth the wait in line if you're a donut lover. The wait wasn't that bad either, but we did wait in the rain so not sure what it would be on a sunny day. Dark chocolate sea salt and maple bacon were so good!
Sarah Cooke
Was recommended this place by several people for our trip to Maine and the Holy Donut did not disappoint! They close when we they run out of stock, which can be pretty early on busy days - we stopped by around 2pm on a Friday and they were closed. Tried again around 6:30am on our way out of Portland the next morning and the line was already out the door, but well worth the wait!
Got a variety of donuts including blueberry, maple bacon, chocolate sea salt (my absolute favorite!), pomegranate, and triple berry. All were amazing! Very unique style of donuts, since they're made with potatoes. It makes the donuts very chewy, but not super heavy. Will definitely be coming back next time we visit Maine!
Jas Kanwal
Holy moly were they good!! Certainly pricy, but they taste so good that you forget how much you paid for them. Sweet Potato ginger, fresh lemon, canoli ginger, blueberry are a must try!
Lydia Chew
These are Maine potato donuts, so they're more cakey than typical donuts. It was really tasty!
Nadira Salma Khan
Super amazing donuts! I've heard the hype behind the place but these donuts exceeds anything you can imagine. So great! I love the little gift items they have as well, got a shirt and cute cup as well! Definitely amazing donuts! You HAVE to try!
Kylie Delgado
I think everyone needs to stop in a try at least one donut from Holy Donut! They have a great variety of donuts to try, and the staff is very friendly. I think our favorite was the lemon!
Meghan Cavanagh
To this place I say, "HOLY MOLEY!" This is by far the easiest five star review I've written. The Holy Donut is definitely the epitome of donut shops. Their donuts are extremely well balanced - not too sugary, not too doughy. And I promise you that there is no bad flavor of donut here! My personal favorite is the Holy Cannoli (Glazed donut + cannoli cream!). They also offer gluten free and vegan donuts to fit all allergy accommodations. The staff are friendly and the donuts/drinks are priced very fairly. Absolutely a must visit if you are in or near the area!
Riley Wantz
The staff here was so incredibly sweet to us first timers. These are potato flour donuts which make them very “cakey” instead of “yeasty/bready”. Like those packaged powdered sugar donuts you get in store. The “old fashioned” tasted like a higher quality version of those without powdered sugar.
That being said, I didn’t care that much for it but the apple cider and Cinnamon Sugar ones were very good.
I think this style of donut isn’t for me as I tend to like Brioche or yeast donuts, but I think these for this genre of donuts are top notch. Not for me, but I highly recommend everyone give it a shot as it’s a unique donut you won’t find anywhere else.
spencer wiegand
The first place my wife wanted to go to in Portland and honestly…..I was not not disappointed!! I loved the maple one the best. The maple flavor and sweetness of the glaze made the thick style of doughnut a delectable choice for a great start to the day!
John Gill
Right-o!
Not sure how they make such a tasty doughnut out of potato, but they do! Good coffee, too.
Toodle-oo
Julie's bites
I liked them. They slightly less sweet than Dunkin donuts. I can tell the dough is different although not drastically so. Will have these again!
Harry Miller
Tough finding a parking spot to get to this gem, in Portland Maine. They have warm welcomes from great employees. Friendly and courteous.
They have original flavors for their donuts that are absolutely delicious. Visiting from North Carolina...thank you for the great experience.
Kyle Marshall
The different flavors and styles of donuts here are fantastic! We got a dozen and took some home with us. This is definitely worth a stop if you're driving through Portland.
Amaranth Sander
I got a blueberry donut with lemon glaze and it was great. Really soft texture, not like any donut I’d ever had before.
Kevin F
Holy Donut, you legend you! Stopped by on the way out of town and was very impressed by their setup, offerings and friendly service. It helped that it was low season, so no line whatsoever. The potato starch used in the donuts make for a hearty, more substantial bite, akin to a funnel cake but not as greasy. Donuts tasted great even after road tripping home and nearly a week in the box. Pro tip: try their savory bfast options, we got the bacon and broccoli cheese, that were like what a hot pocket in it’s highest form. Praise HD!!!
Liseli P.
You can't really understand the hype until you taste one. Unlike any other donut I've ever had. Its light and melts in your mouth but still has a fulfilling consistency that you can chew and enjoy. The donut itself is not too sweet but just sweet enough - perfect with a cup of coffee. There are so many flavors to choose from and they are (almost) all good. The Samoa one (coconut and chocolate drizzle - like the girl scout cookie) was not my cup of tea but my husband loved it. The kids tasted a few different kinds but always came back to the maple one. Now, during this COVID era, you can just pick up - there is also the option of ordering ahead of time (night before) and picking up in the morning. Our fist time we got there late morning and there were only a few flavors left. Really get there early as they do close when they run out. They were so good we picked up a box to take home.
Christine Kim
I’m not typically a donut person, but I couldn’t resist the opportunity to try potato donuts! I had never heard of it, and figured it would be healthier than the usual donuts. We selected an assortment to try and definitely enjoyed them! If you’re visiting Portland, you’ll have to stop by and try these donuts!
Omar C
Donuts are pure perfection, loved each one and the staff was great
Perks Advisor
Who does not enjoy a good donut? The Holy Donut has an assortment of great flavors including maple. I enjoyed my potato based donut, which is a heavier style donut. The coffee was rich as well.
While everyone is figuring out service during Covid, the Holy Donut was inefficient allowing you to order online for all but the coffee, but then requiring you stand in a long line again to order coffee and that is just not so much fun even if you had a sugar high from the donut.
Nancy
These are the best potato donuts I've ever had! They have a denser texture but still remain fluffy. My favorite flavor was probably the sweet potato pumpkin spice, which was a seasonal fall flavor. There was a line and the takeout app wasn't working at the time, but the line moved relatively quickly. Prices weren't bad for a specialty donut shop. If I'm in the area again, I'll definitely stop by.
Daniel G
Fresh donuts and a ton of different flavors to pick from. Ideal for a quick breakfast before walking around the old port. The chocolate sea salt donut was my favorite but their Chai Thai donut was a close second! They sell cool merch too!
Jea Kim
Interesting donuts that’s worth a try. I was initially not drawn to the idea of donuts made of potatoes, but once I tried them, I was amazed. Everything was not overly sweet and not too heavy. Compared to regular donuts, they are less doughy, but it still went really well with coffee.
Sammi
I stopped by here while visiting Portland to try out a potato donut and after hearing such great things about the place. We got a chocolate sea salt and lavender honey donut and were happy with our choices! When you bite into the doughnuts for the first time there is definitely a bit of a potatoey flavor, but its good and fun! The donuts were not greasy at all and not too dense, which is what I was expecting. They are a bit expensive for a single donut, but just keep in mind the quality ingredients! I'd recommend a stop in!
cecile latimore
They offer vegan options and donuts made from premium ingredients. You can tell that they are a more healthy donut than commercial brand donuts. They aren't overly sweet either. They were good. But, not anything that I would say is a must have. They were about $3 each.
Bryan Doyon
Awesome donuts with great flavor and ingredients. They tend to be a bit more dense due to the potatoes but are excellent if you like that kind of donut. Staff is super friendly and they offer a great selection including numerous vegan flavors. This is a great local business and one I'm happy to support and stop by anytime I'm in town.
Mike Ortiz
Amazing donuts! Try the Maine blueberry. Lots of coconut options. You can taste the yummy difference of the potato donut. If you order online and pick up you won’t have to wait in line.
Ernst Schubert
Super yummy potato doughnuts, lots of different/unique flavors a good stop for sure
Arianna Ramos
I got our donuts from the exchange st location but it says permanently closed so I'm leaving the review here since these donuts were so good! The 30min wait was worth it. We bought a half a dozen box with two maples, maple bacon, toasted coconut, salted caramel and gluten free vanilla. It is a lil pricy but for the quality it is very fresh and good. Also had their apple cider it went so well with the maple donut! My favorite was the maple one hands down, highly recommend!
Danny Levy
The pumpkin donut I had here was so so good! The consistency and flavor was amazing, top 10 out of every one of my personal donut spots.
Sara Rehart
The best potato donuts I ever had with yummy flavors. I ordered 4 for just me bc I couldn't choose and my grandparents like the Old Fashioned to limit the sugar. Fast and easy service, too :) I appreciate they offer gluten-free and vegan options. Although, the maple bacon is my favorite - along with the Maine blueberry donut!
Nathaly
Love these. Although I do prefer yeast doughnuts... these are almost in a league of their own. They're light, not overly sweet with good flavor. Loved all the great flavor options.
**The vegan pomegranate should be included as a regular donut. Noone would know it's vegan, it's equally as delicious as the others.
Julianne Swiecicki
Good place to stop for a quick breakfast! Our friends recommended it, saying that they love the maple bacon and other flavors. I got the pomegranate doughnut which was very tasty and an egg and pesto breakfast sandwich! My husband got a cinnamon sugar doughnut and was happy with his choice as well.
They don’t have a parking lot, but there is plenty of street parking around.
Eric Hammer
The Holy Donut was on my short list of “Must Do” for my Portland trip. Though wecouldn’t find time to visit the Old Port location, the Park Ave location was open on Monday morning.
We got six (6) donuts between 2 people, which was more than enough. But they all sounded so good that we couldn’t help ourselves.
We got Maine Blueberry (best one we got), Blueberry Lemon, Maple Bacon (obviously), Chocolate Sea Salt, Sweet Potato Ginger Sugar (very different, outstanding), and Vanilla Glazed.
If you’re in a small group, make sure you incorporate The Holy Donut into your itinerary. Get a bunch of donuts to try. Never had potato donuts before, and they were even better than I could’ve imagined.
Lyle Saperstein
The donuts melt in your mouth. I visited the park ave location. I really liked the cinnamon sugar and the bacon and cheese stuffed donuts. If you can make it here try them. Very good.
Chris
Amazing donuts with unique flavors definitely a must stop when in Portland. They have several locations so its easy to find one. Be sure to get there early in order to have a greater selection to choose from.
Joseph E
Great flavor choices. Nice thick hearty doughnuts, good prices. This is a great alternative to the chain donut shops you find all over. These are a nice treat to your palette.
DeAndre Walters
Pretty cute establishment, was worth the wait. Delicious donuts that are unique in every way and taste better than your usual donut. Recommended part of any trip to Maine. Pretty friendly staff 10/10 delicious donuts and sweet as can be. Many great choices
Derek Steen
Wow! Such large and dense (yet fluffy) doughnuts! It's hard to pick a few because all the flavours sound delicious. Toasted Coconut, Triple Berry (tastes most like raspberry), and Dark Chocolate Cinnamon Sugar were my favourite flavours.
Go early before they run out of flavours. Best eaten fresh, but will last 2-3 days in a sealed container.
Jared Goulette
Best donuts on earth! Locally owned and operated, this place is a must. Delicious flavors, GF options, friendly staff and a great atmosphere. Get there early, they close after they sell out of donuts! Yes, they are THAT GOOD. Highly recommended!!
Heather Schmidt
Great experience, nice staff. Long line on Saturday morning, no wait on Sunday afternoon. Highly recommend the Honey Lavender. Blueberry lemon was nice, too. Could use more sprinkles. Potato donuts have a spongy texture but hold up fairly well if you don't eat them right away.
Mary Sue Ankner
I'm not a donut eater but I knew I had to try these. I really enjoyed the lemon blueberry. Glaze was sweet but donut was not which made all the difference! Delicious. The staff was very helpful with each person in line. Definitely worth a visit!
John Pozadzides (John P.)
Holy donuts! This place rocks! And everyone knows it... Prepare to wait in a long line, possible even wrapping around the building for these unique donuts that are potato based. But it's worth it. Trust me...
Joseph Dimasso
Expect a wait, they sell out of some flavors so I'd have a few back up flavors in mind. The doughnuts are great, our favorite was the simple cinnamon sugar. The coffee is mediocre.
Ali
Absolutely the best place to go for donuts. So many different flavor options. I love that they offer Gluten free & are always so friendly. They also offer Event donuts (Weddings, Office party's, ect.) and they never dissapoint.
Sammy
Not as good as Krispy Kreme but not a bad donut. For the price and the long wait on line definitely not worth it. You wouldn't be missing anything if you skipped this place.
Marwan
Excellent donuts, friendly service, quick turnaround. Highly recommend the berry cannoli and fresh lemon donuts
Milind Shah
Now these are donuts! And they have vegan donuts that are excellent. The staff was extremely caring accommodating some food allergies. The family members with egg and nut allergies had no problem and were thrilled to have a donut for the first time.
Alissa Delorey
This is a fun stop when in Portland. There is always a line here and the donuts are great. We were happy they offered a few gluten free options too. While these donuts are delicious and unique in the fact that they are made of potatoes, I don't find them to be amazing, but that's just personal opinion. People line up for a reason! Definitely give them a try next time you're in Portland!!
Ews
Holy donut has amazing donuts! We went that late afternoon and most of it was sold out.. but we still got some.. I recommend going early.
Josh
We love our donuts, but also love it when a donut shop can surprise us. This is the place that surprised us! A potato donut seems like an interesting type of donut, but it has the sweetest and tastiest dough to it. Try several, especially the pomegranate, maple, chocolate caramel hazelnut, and the Allen's coffee brandy. All fantastic selections! We went once, then had to come back the next morning!
Matthew Garcia
Wow wow wow! As someone who makes an effort to experience the donuts in every city visited, these blew me away. I still crave them and wish all were this good. I’ve been to some premium, talented donut shops but the simplicity, unique qualities, and pure flavors of this shop cannot be matched or surpassed. Everything was better than we expected. Potato flour changed the game!
Ayon Ibrahim
Long line but worth it - never had potato donuts before but we liked them! A bit more dense than regular donuts. Lots of interesting flavors.
John Schindler
The staff was very helpful and patient as we were overwhelmed and excited to see an abundance of delicious Gluten Free options! We visited both days we were in town and brought home a half dozen. All of the GF were absolutely amazing!!! Can’t wait for a return visit.
David Stone
Potato Doughnuts! Some really creative varieties, but chocolate sea salt is the favorite choice.
Joseph Middleton
A nice, low-key donut shop providing potato donuts with a wide variety of icings and toppings. On my most recent trip to Portland, I made several visits here in the morning trying different varieties every time. In my experience, the potato donut has a similar flavor, but crisper texture than the classic donut. This is absolutely worth a visit when in Portland.
The destination therapist Deidra Plourde
Every-time I come to Maine I have to make a spot at holy donut , I feel like the donuts are a little expensive but they are good so it’s worth it .
Eric Lewandowski
The chocolate, coconut donut is in the top 3 donuts I've ever had. The texture and taste were amazing!
Ecowood Floors Inc.
In search of great homemade doughnuts 🍩 led us to Maine. We missed our Burlington, Vermont’s Doughnut 🍩 Dilemma. Got a dozen of The Holy Donuts favorites. 🤣😂😝😊🍩🙌🍩😊😝😂🤣 …
Meredith Arguelles
So at least 5 different people told me when I was in Portland, I had to go here for their infamous potato donuts! They were all delicious but the maple bacon was wicked awesome! I will say they did not disappoint, plus they had gluten free ones for my sister! 3 generations left happy and FULL!
Nick Peters
Phenomenal doughnut and coffee experience. Wonderful variety of doughnuts. My favorite was the triple (tasted like a caramel delight girl scout cookie). Latte was delicious, perfect temp and not burnt. Highly recommend.
Big Kahuna
Nice people, good coffee, and great donuts!
Potato donuts sound crazy you say??? We agree but omg they were so freaking good. If you are near Portland do yourself a favor, but be sure to check out the Park Ave location, way less busy than the downtown location and easier to park too.
Crystal Lefoy
Holy Moly these are sooooo good! You can NOT go wrong with these donuts. I am a semi-tough critic & these were well worth the wait. The staff are all kind & courteous and ready to assist with whatever you need. Can not wait to return to Maine so that we can have these again everyday!
Shawn Tardif
This place rocks! Love the donuts, met the owner once way back in the day, super nice woman. The customer service is excellent. I truly appreciate this business
Scorpius Kamelot
I could literally eat an entire dozen of their old- fashioned doughnut. Do not let the aesthetic plainness of it turn you off to that juicy, slightly crispy jewel. Also has gluten free options and my gluten intolerant girlfriend is hooked!
Yes, it is as good as the Food Network says.
Sriram Sridhar
Amazing gem in the Portland, Maine area.. a must visit even for donut lovers of all ages.. they used mashed potatoes to make their donuts which gives it a totally unique taste but not compromising on yumminess!
We got the sea salt dark choc and cannoli filled pomegranate flavor donuts... we are definitely coming back to visit this place next time we are in Maine!
Lindsay E.
I didn't know I needed potato donuts in my life until I went here. Absolutely melt-in-your-mouth delicious! They also had several vegan options for my brother-in-law and offered unique flavors I hadn't seen in donuts before (pomegranate, blueberry lemonade, berry cannoli). Very small space, so don't really plan on getting a spot to sit and eat; it's more of a takeaway place.
Kelly Boone
They were fun to try but I’ve had a lot better elsewhere. The triple berry was my favorite. The Apple cider drink is literally all ice and about 4 sips of actual liquid.
Susie
Delicious donuts, my son loves blueberry donuts and said it must of been the best blueberry donut he's ever had. Wish I would have bought more. Live in Compton CA otherwise I would have a Holy Donut addiction.
Robert Kalinowski
Donuts were amazing. The lemon blueberry might be the best donut I ever had. The coffee though was very meh.
Allen Schroedel
Was sceptical at first. We got a half dozen. Two dark chocolate sea salt a coffee cake two holly cannoli berry ones and a main blueberry. So far the dark chocolate sea salt is to kill for and the coffee cake was tasty as well. They also have coffee as well and the iced moca is just to my liking
F. Valle
I am addicted to this donuts. Chocolate glazed, ginger glazed, coffee cake and chai are my favorites. Once in a while I will going in and they will have a special flavor that I like to try.
The Cold brew is really good here too, they use Coffee by Design beans.
I have to say that a usually go to the location on exchange because I find they usually have more options later in the day and they also close later some days of the week.
Ali Pourtabib
Delicious donuts with interesting flavors. The ginger cannoli ...and all were delicious! Great service.
Lindsay Williams
The only doughnuts I will eat! I really liked the atmosphere and the selection of donuts. I have to come back every time I'm around.
Gracie Wood Shepherd
This is just the best doughnut place. We are from Texas but anytime we are visiting the northeast, we will drive hours to come get a dozen of these doughnuts. The Main Blueberry seasonal doughnut in the summer is delicious. You really can’t go wrong with any of their doughnuts.
Morgan Bush
The Holy Donut is a must-do in Portland. The donuts are delicious — and there are so many flavors to choose from! You can’t go wrong with the maple or the triple berry!!
Diane M
Now I understand all the buzz about this place. The dark chocolate sea salt is simply unique - and that’s hard to do with a donut. The vanilla glazed is good, as is the Maine apple cider and toasted coconut (no I did not eat them all myself). But they are a bit pricey, so it did keep me from buying a full dozen as intended. Still, the quality and selection is outstanding.
Aman Pathania
If you get fresh donut, then why would you care if there is a wait for 30 minutes. First visit to Maine and after coming to the city, this is the place which was something most of the locals suggested.
So, I will say - if you are in town, then you got to eat these donuts. Because these are holy :)
Glez Me
They have really good donuts and cold coffee!
Z S
Best donuts 🍩 ever! I usually hate donuts honestly, they are either too sweet, too dry or both. Until i discovered potato donuts and wow does it make a difference! Made with Mashed potatoes, it's fluffier and just plain delicious. They have so many flavors to choose from and my favorite is definitely the dark sea salt chocolate.
Try them out!
Gerald Morin
My wife expects a dozen Holy donuts on Mother's Day--she loves them!! Great creative flavors!
Felix Roberge
The dark chocolate coconut donut is unreal, super moist and tasty. Cold brew is also good, have ice cubes made with some coffee. Compliments to the chef.
Han
friendly staff and great vegan assortment! I recommend the coffee cake donut!
Sarah L
Yummmmm. These are super flavorful donuts! They are so big and dense i could barely finish one, but worth it!
Ashley
10/10 recommend - these donuts were definitely worth the stop!! SO GOOD!! They have the BEST variety of flavors as well!! 😋🍩 …
Tejaswini Lele
The staff was very friendly.
We tried 2 donuts, the flavors were good but too sweet.
Ryan Houlette
Some of the best donuts I've had. Moist and tender on the inside, perfect amount of crisp on the outside. Not to sweet, with interesting but subtle flavors. The dark chocolate sea salt is phenomenal.
Anna S
Got lucky and there was zero wait. Parking was easy, staff were friendly and helpful and the doughnuts were perfect! Highly recommend!
Thomas Mullane
Plenty of donuts available at 11am on Sunday. Lots of unique flavors and excellent coffee beverages as well.
Cheryl B.
A wide assortment of donuts including maple bacon and dark chocolate with sea salt, delicious!
Sarah Molen
So freaking good! The triple berry donut was tasty without being overwhelmingly sweet. Never had potato donuts before, but I will definitely have them again!
Ignacio Cetrangolo
Delicious donuts, different hot and cold beverages available, and very kind staff.
Sharon Reynolds
Soooo gooood!!! Standouts were definitely the lavender honey and the dark chocolate salted but every one we tried was delicious!
Roshani P
Outstanding donuts
Chocolate sea salt is the besttttttt
Gluten free options for the win
The coffee is outstanding as well
Could not be happier !
Chris Callow
Potato donuts. They're good. Not sure I'd spot any difference.
Thomas J. Armitage
I have a crazy sweet tooth. As a result, I've had my fair share of donuts. I can easily say that these are the best donuts I've ever had in my entire life. So much flavor. Good size. Very unique in taste. We had the chocolate and sea salt, blueberry with blueberry glaze, blueberry with lemon glaze, and the maple bacon. All were extraordinary. You simply cannot visit Portland ME and not get coffee and donuts here.
Lindsey Shafer
Amazing donuts. They melt in your mouth. The best were Dark Chocolate Sea Salt and Maple.
Daniel Antoniazzi
These donuts definitely live up to the hype. We waited in line for a bit, but the line moved fast and it was definitely worth the wait. Many different flavors to choose from, and definitely unique. Never had a donut like this, the blueberry and maple bacon were my favorites. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in town.
Nero T
Came here about a year ago and I still think about their potato donuts. Plenty of flavours that sell out fast. They also have gluten free and vegan donuts
Jamie Dumbill
Road tripping through Maine stopped in Portland for the afternoon. Bacon maple donut was delicious. Worthy of a spot on the top donut places in America along with our favorites from closer to home (NYC) Dough and Peter Pan.
Cory Clark
Really liked the donuts we got. The Coconut, Caramel, and Chocolate was my favorite (followed by the Chocolate Sea Salt). Service was really good.
Jordan Ann
Best donuts I've ever had! My favorite would have to be the cinnamon sugar ones
Suresh Appasamy
Get there early - 6.30 am as they run out. parking along the street. We liked the blueberry, lemon glazed and one with canoli.
Julia Slaughter
So happy to find a variety of vegan donuts, and they're all delicious! Didn't know what to think about potato donuts before trying them but wow, so delicious! Worth a drive to get these! Street parking was plentiful when we went, and staff was friendly.
SPD
Always a place to go on our Maine trips! Donuts are so good. Try the holy cannoli donut!
Brittani Harris
SUPER tasty donuts that you would never know are potato. Sugar coated was my favorite. I do wish they had some little tables outside just to sit and eat, but there is a small counter inside. More of a grab-and-go place (though this could be a result of covid). Definitely worth the hype!
Hokyung Roh
Chocolate Salty donut is by far unique. When you bite into it, you will love the chocolate taste then a crunch crust of our layer, when you think you are done, then you will bite into the salt that adds shuttle saltiness in your mouth. Definitely a unique experience you will get from a donut!
R Boday
Holy Donut is the queen of the local donut scene for a reason. They're not bready yeast donuts (which we also like), but potato donuts, and the flavors change regularly. Parking was bonkers at this location, and the flow of ordering was a little confusing, but service and donuts were *amazing*. I would double-park a police car for these donuts. They're better the next day than any other local place's donuts fresh.
Kevin Diggler
Donuts are ok... coffee is really good. Employees look grimy. Like they need to shower.
Taylor Raack
Sweet potato donuts are quite good! Many custom flavors that you wouldn't normally find elsewhere.
Adam Hechler
We visited the Park Ave location because we heard you have to try these donuts while in town. I've had some if the supposed best donuts in other states and the Holy Donut is right up there. We were too late to get the Blueberry Lemon or Blueberry Glazed which I really wanted to try. But there were plenty others to try. What separates them in my opinion is the different flavors. We bought a half dozen and tried the Toasted Coconut, Sweet Potato Ginger Glazed, Triple Berry, Cinnamon Blueberry, Maple, Coffee Brandy (?). We tried halves of most of them with the Toasted Coconut and Sweet Potato Ginger Glazed being my favorite. There's one we haven't even tried yet, it went into the freezer with halves of others. They're very good donuts and I can see the appeal.
We also had some cold brew iced coffee - decaf - and it was nice that they had decaf. It was very good iced coffee.
LJ Johnson
Definitely a unique place to go when in Maine! The triple berry was the best I think, coffee was mediocre though!
John
I loved the Holy Donut for years, and I still do! But I’m also slowly overcoming the hype. Their donuts are great and I recommend everyone try them…repeatedly, but don’t neglect other locally owned Donut shops in Portland. There are others and they’re also very good.
Holy Donut has a great reputation for good Potato-based donuts and coffee. They have a variety of different coffee styles and flavors to fit everyone’s favorite just like their great donut selection.
They also have hot donuts. Ask what they have when you’re there. Some front desk folks think you mean the “cold” donuts that are still hot and that’s fine but I mean the kind filled with things like Bacon & Cheddar. It’s a small premium but everything is a bit pricey so just enjoy yourselves periodically. They’re good.
They have a coffee rewards program. Coffee will likely cost you double compared to the nearby Dunkin’ but again, if you’re there, just do it. If you’re on a budget, grab a donut and bring a coffee.
If you buy coffee, use their rewards program!
They have Toast for all forms of payment.
I’ll be back for the almighty Chocolate Sea Salt but I’m sorry we’ve drifted a bit after all this time. I have many Donut shops to try and only one tummy!
David Wiggins
I had a pretty tasty maple bacon donut here. It was maybe a little too sweet? Just my personal preference. I will say that it looked absolutely incredible, exactly how you want that kind of donut to look. They were also almost out of donuts by the time we got in here, so if you're looking for something specific you might want to stop in early. Overall this was a great experience and I would definitely come back here.
Laura Houlette
Some of the best donuts I have ever had: crispy, tender, not too sweet, not too heavy, and a wide variety of flavors froma traditional dark chocolate (amazing) to carrot cake, pomegranate, caramel and coconut... definitely worth the trip!
Hailey Anderson
My boyfriend brought home gluten free donuts for me. I have celiac and missed a good cider or cinnamon sugar donut during fall. My expectations were blown away. These donuts are absolutely delicious, and I loved every flavor I tried.
F K
Holy Moly! The donuts were fantastic. We ordered a dozen variety. The coconut, caramel dark chocolate, blueberry and sweet potato were to die for. Made out trip back much more enjoyable. They are very satisfying. It’s a must stop when you are in the area or passing through!
Stephanie MacVane
one of my favorite donut places! I love the coconut chocolate donuts and the blueberry one.
Mainely Wood & Stone
Best Gluten free donuts around for sure. Also the most expensive donuts I know of.
Lorna Brown
Arrived to find 30 people standing in line in the rain. I have had these donuts many times and they are worth every minute of the wait in pretty much any weather condition! Best donut you will ever eat. This place knows what they are doing moving the line along quickly with each customer being served with a smile.
Margaret Coughlin
Had to go 3x to get there when they had any donuts—sold out by 10 am? Come on! Too precious. That said—I am not a donut lover and went for my family-these are really special. Cakey and substantial —interesting flavors —although many of them taste similar—so choose one flavor and enjoy. $3.50 FOR A DONUT? Ok that is the norm these days —be sure you enjoy. Worth a try. Wondering how the coffee is? Try it next time
Thomas Corona
Donuts so good, we had to go twice in our 4 days we spent in Portland. Loved the ginger and toasted coconut, though they were all delicious.
C Cotton
The experience was basic but ... we arrived at 2:30pm on a Sunday. There was a line outside. It took about 10 minutes to get in. Everything was very well organized. But there was only a small variety of donuts left. We got 1/2 dozen of the plain, the coconut, some kind of blueberry and the some kind of cinnamon crunch. I suspected the donuts were made earlier but in the event they were not warm or soft. The taste wasn't bad but given the price ($17 for 6 + coffee), certainly not something I would drive out of my way to get. But I suspect going early in the morning when donuts are freshly made and there is more variety is probably a completely different experience.
Satya Gandham
Nice cozy donut shop. Got a dozen donuts encompassing various varieties. I thought the blueberry glazed, dark chocolate sea salt, and honey lavender flavors were all fantastic. The rest were great as well. This is a really great place to get donuts.
Emily Brink
A fresh donut from here is absolutely heaven. Best to eat them when they're hot and fresh! They have lots of whimsical and delicious flavors- I particularly love the salted caramel one. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside- I love them.
Meg Genova
Delicious! Awesome vegan donut offering, which I seldom see.
Kristi White
Wow! Potato donuts are awesome! All kinds of crazy flavors. Yum!
C Kiely
Highly recommend coming as soon as they open to avoid the crowds that will form to get the amazing donuts at The Holy Donut! I went in around 7am and had no problems, but by 9am the line was out the door and down the sidewalk! So glad that they have vegan options so that I could try out a classic Maine potato donut. The service was speedy and everyone was kind and welcoming. The Holy Donut is a must for anyone visiting Portland.
Kiran Varughese
In short, this place sells over-priced donuts. At $3 a pop, it's not something mind-blowing or out of this world. It's definitely soft and tastes fresh. But again it's just a Maine thing.
Vincent
So good! Awesome flavors to choose from and the coffee is great too!
Michael Szymkowski
The absolute best donuts I've ever had. They have a vast selection of donuts, a decent selection of hot and iced drinks and the staff is awesome.
Chip Haver
We both think it was worth the 40 minute wait as we wanted the "holy experience"
We ordered a half dozen and found all the doughnus to be delicious.
Wilson Cheung
It's been four months since I last visited. Got my fix. Sad that I wasn't able to order online so I did have to wait on line. It wasn't too long of a wait though as they have the process down. Service is always great here!
Sam Faller
The best donuts. Simply the best.
And not only that but they're friendly and nice, they have vegan options. What more could you want?
Jacob Lotstein
I think I'm gonna get a lot of flak for not giving this well known donut shop 5 stars given how popular it is but I've decided potato donuts just aren't my jam. I was tempted to give five stars because the service is always great and as far as potato donuts go they're certainly the best I've had (special shout-out to the sea salt dark chocolate) but in the end they're just too dense and cakey compared to normal yeast donuts for my taste. That being said, you can never go wrong bringing a dozen of these to a group of people you want to make happy or impress.
Maggie Drewry
What a great place! Their potato donuts are so good! But, you need to get here early. There's always a huge line, and the best flavors sell out fast. Great for an early breakfast treat!
Nicole Reaume
Very delicious and filling!!! The maple bacon was definitely my favorite. We only had a 5 min wait.
Neil Frutuoso
These donuts are really good. We arrived at about 9am and the line moved quickly. Get the maple bacon, so worth it!
Caitlin Swalec
Delicious Maine blueberry donut. Sweet potato ginger glazed was okay but the sweet potato taste was not as strong as I liked.
Katie Lofton
Got a dozen to try everything and my only regret is we didn’t try the one savory donut. Liked every flavor I tried. We got there on a Tuesday morning in Feb. right when they opened so it wasn’t busy yet. Also, the coffee was better than expected!
William Wu
I ordered the Triple Berry, Dark Chocolate Sea Salt, Apple Cider and Sweet Potato Ginger. Apple Cider and Dark Chocolate Sea Salt were my favs.
Jane Sturges
I love potatoes, they are a huge part of my diet, but never before like this. We got 4 different kinds - sweet potato coffee cake, blueberry, maple bacon, and a plain old-fashioned (no icing). All were amazing, and honestly, that's probably the best balance of maple bacon in terms of texture and flavor, in a dessert I've ever had. Definitely worth a visit!
Shaleena Quinlan
If you love giant donuts that are both delicious and gluten free, then you'll love The Holy Donut.
Ghassan 'Gus'
Love the flavor options! Donuts are fluffy and tasty. A must have place when visiting Portland!
Scott C
Good potato donuts. Line moved fast. Touch pricey. Unique donuts.
Nora A
Such an interesting concept and I'm glad I tried their blueberry donut. Early morning is the time to go to avoid crowds.
Olivia Farrugia
Very creative flavors, overall good but a little dry. Well priced.
Jenny Ribeiro-de Sa
My husband and I were traveling to Portland with our two small children. They wanted to get doughnuts, but they had just closed before we got there. The people working there saw the disappointment on the children’s faces outside the door and gave us a huge box of the leftovers from the end of the day for free! Not only were the doughnuts delicious, but the kindness of the woman working there inspired me to write a review. I highly recommend the doughnuts and the people are the kind that you want to be around. Will definitely revisit the next time we are in town.
Josh Lindgren
If you're looking for a spiritual food experience you just found the right place. I usually never eat donuts but I have found myself chomping on holy donuts two times this week. You cannot go wrong with the Apple or the classic glazed
justin farino
Incredible selection of vegan donuts. Personally I love the vanilla glazed and the cinnamon sugar. The coffee is pretty good too!
Brian Czech (Personal)
Probably the best donuts I've ever had. Not too sweet or heavy, interesting natural flavors.
Holly Howe
One of the best donuts I've ever had. I would make special trips to Portland from Boston just to get my hands on these.
Priscilla Arsenault
Holy Donuts has such an amazing selection of flavors, it's hard to choose! Every flavor is unique and delicious. I can't get enough!
Sharisse Kanet
The donuts are very good, obviously, but the staff was also very nice and the merch they sell is a surprisingly high quality.
Donut info:
They had sold out of a bunch by the time we got there at 11, but still had vanilla, chocolate sea salt glaze, sweet potato ginger, sweet potato coffee cake, maple, maple bacon, and a few gluten free varieties including coconut/caramel/chocolate and lemon.
They also sell coffee, tea, soda, etc.
Leah Belber
Surprisingly tasty! Eat them hot and beware of a line. Very filling
Hamza Malik
Those potato donuts are just exquisite. I have never tasted anything like this, and the flavors they have in them are just phenomenal.
I would recommend you try it. I tried three flavors: ginger, maple, and dark chocolate. And I wasn't disappointed in any of them.
Kent Duffy
Friendly staff, tasty donuts, they even make a bacon filled donut
Tiffany Sperry Mason
My daughters face shows just how good this place is! We loved your donuts. We love that you have gluten free and vegan options! If you haven’t been to Holy Donuts you are missing out!
J H
Early bird advantages!
Very lovely place, be aware you will wait, but it is all worth it. Drink orders are taken while in line so less wait inside for that; delicious smells upon entry; kind staff; delectable and creative donuts. So many choices, and a handful of flavors for gluten free as well.
Daniela Squizzato
At our third attempt we were able to get donuts! Make sure you arrive before noon! The selection we got unfortunately, was limited, given we arrived at noon on a Saturday no less but they are so organized indoors that don’t be dissuaded by the line outdoors! It moves pretty quickly :)
Jamie Enos
Read about this place online. A bit overrated if you ask me. I love donuts but was not overly impressed. Topping and icing was flavorful, however the donut was chewy and dry(maybe it’s the potato??) Atmosphere and staff was pleasant and friendly, but I certainly wouldn’t wait in line for one.
Harley Chadly
Great variety of delicious donuts (including gluten free.)
Robbie King
Quite possibly the world's best donuts! I suggest one of each flavor.
Kacie Riebman
I was super excited to try this place for the great reviews. If you’re just looking for a good regular donut I didn’t find these the best.. a little dry. But if you are gluten free or vegan this is a great option as they have many options
Joe Walsh
Incredible donuts! Better than them non potato types.
Kerstin N.
THE BEST donuts I’ve ever had! I love that they are a little denser than regular donuts + that they had such interesting flavors + LOTS of vegan varieties! Convenient order-ahead + curbside pick-up system. Staff was wonderful!
Sarah Buckley
OH. MY. GOD.
Go here. Right now. If you like donuts this place will not disappoint. I was skeptical about them being a potato base but man they are delicious! Definitely go early. There weren't a lot of choices when we went because it was late morning. Was hoping to try the sweet potato donut so try it for me!
Samuel Peluso
Best Donuts in Maine. Most of their best flavors are vegan and they constantly are making new flavors. My favorites from this trip were the lemon and the margarita. When is someone going to start selling potato donuts in Toronto?
Arne Hedstrom
"Best donuts in Portland" ?
Maybe, but I think they were just above average. However, not much competition and there is a nice variety if you get there early. Very popular, lines down the block.
Ian Lever
These donuts hit the spot. My favorite was the honey lavender. The top favorites of the group (in ranked order) were blueberry and dark chocolate sea salt. Gluten free donuts were VERY good, too. PSA: Would HIGHLY recommend to order ahead for pickup to avoid waiting in a long line!
Tom Dentremont
Great potato flour doughnuts in a variety of flavors, courteous and efficient service
Michael Johnson
A Portland staple and icon! No trip is complete without a few treats from The Holy Donut. I prefer the simple maple donut and a pesto frittata breakfast sandwich.
Michelle Nason
I love this place ! The only bad thing is most times they don't have the donut I want . I think they stopped making the donut with cream in the middle that was my favorite . I think it was called the holy cannoli . If you've never tried the bacon & cheese filled donut try it you'll love it . I love the lemon & the berry donut . If you like the berry donut & there all out try the pomegranate one it's similar & It's good
Nick Saccente
The donuts are HUGE, with gluten free options. We'll be hitting this place every morning during our stay in Portland. The staff is enthusiastic, the coffee is good.
Christa Dacus
Since I consider myself a professional donut eater here's my take away. Flavor profile is a 10 out of 10. The donut itself is a 3. It is heavy and at times can be greasy due to oil temp at frying. I've tried them twice now and don't find them making it to my calories worth eating list. Everyone's palate is different though so give them a try.
Jason Zahn
Stopped by here on a Thursday morning because of reviews and recommendations. First, there is no parking AT ALL and every nearby spot had signs saying NO PARKING or a few signs say donut people will be towed. Wonderful. Finally parked on a side street and walked 1/4 a mile back and there is a line of about 15 of us waiting to get in due to COVID (all good, not their fault). While in line, they take your beverage order so you only do donuts inside. Not sure what the other people did in there but that wait took about 15 minutes (I was inside less than 60 seconds). They have lots of merch ($40 sweatshirt) and a wonderful variety of delicious looking flavors. I got 3 donuts and 2 black regular coffees and the total was $18 after taxes (payment is all credit on a tablet and also requests a discretionary gratuity). Most expensive donuts I have ever bought in my life (more than a cronut in NYC at Empire state building). So how were these circles made of gold? They were OK. A little larger than a standard glazed. These are made with potatoes so different breading - it is a very dry and flavorless (not sweet) bread. The texture is much heavier than a Krispy Kreme but not as dense as a cake donut. The flavorless breading though is compensated by then really doing a nice job on heavy toppings/ frosting with good quality and fun flavors. Maple bacon (we got the last one) was our favorite and had good bacon quantity. Coffee was dark and a good roast too. I'm glad I tried it but not sure I would recommend to friends with the $4 donut price point and parking issues.
Austin Barton
I am a doughnut fanatic, and this place sure did hit the mark for fun and creative. Their seasonal doughnuts are out of this world! The potato versions provide such a unique and wonderful texture that I look forward to having again. Thank you Holy Donut for showing this southerner how New England does it right!
Jason Thomas
It's a famous doughnut shop. Check it out. I wasn't a fan of the doughnuts though, too dense.
Gabriel Agostini
I am not a fan of sweets or donuts, but this place was amazing. Super fresh and naturally sweet. Get one of the seasonal flavors (I had the maple apple cider), or one of their best sellers (toasted coconut). Pair it with a hot cup of coffee and you won't go wrong.
Heidi Lynne Kurter
Okay, hear me out - I’m not a donut person but I knew if I didn’t try one of these before leaving I would love to regret it and my friends would never recommend me anything again.
OMG. The Holy Donut converted me. I was expecting a typical meh type of donut, but this was so delicious. I was dancing every time I took a bite!!!
Jenn Marie
We knew they were popular so we made sure that we stopped by good and early. There were already prior rushing to & from to get their favorite choices. We got a few different kinds and they were all delicious! I got half a dozen and ate 3 within the first hour lol! If you're in Portland a stop is a MUST!!
Great Citizen
The place ran out of all the donuts by 1 pm. They said they run out 90% of what they cook everyday by 10 am. If there is a so much demand do you not want to take order ahead of time and make additional donuts. We drove 2 hours off course to try this famous donuts but came out empty handed.
Julianna Gross
Delicious donuts! I'm sad I live 10 hours away! They tasted delicious and fresh even at the end of the day!
Nate
Wow. Just wow 😲. It's not so much the flavor, the flavor is fine- it's a donut- it tastes like a donut- it's the texture. They're made with potato flour and it's like nothing else. Out of this world. Yum. Thanyou. …
Team Morris- Real Estate-Southern MD
Unbelievable donuts. Worth the 2 mile walk from our Airbnb! So many options and innovative flavors. We went early on a weekday and didn't have a line. These lived up to the hype!
Jason Russell
Lemon glazed was by far my favorite, coffee cake second. They were all very good though
Amanda Doringcott
Cute shop, nice employees, and amazing gluten free options that actually taste good! LIFE CHANGING!
Karen T
Delicious! I definitely recommend the maple bacon and the chocolate sea salt. A little pricey at $18.95 for a half-dozen but our trip to Maine is probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience so we plan to splurge when it comes to the food. 😋 …
Chris Wells
Portland doughnut shops have a cult following. Everyone has a passionate opinion on whether Voodoo, Blue Star, Top Pot, or someone else have the best doughnuts in Portland.
They're all 2,500 miles off. Holy Donut blows Oregon's best out of the water. Their potato doughnuts are moist, spongy, and full of flavor. When I was here, I bought a half-dozen for the road and slowly enjoyed them over the next few days. Even the three-day-old doughnuts were just as good as the ones I had on day one.
Kate Castonguay
Believe the hype. I'm not normally a donut eater, if anything I'll have a chocolate glaze if someone gives me a donut, however after hearing about The Holy Donut I figured what the heck lets give it a whirl. We got a half dozen for two of us over a few days. They're amazing. Consistency and flavors are on point. Get a variety it's worth your while. Don't cheap out unless of course you have the pleasure of living near this heavenly establishment. Oh, and great staff as well.
Ping Vuong
Folks! You don’t want to miss this place
David Langenberg
The donuts are made from potatoes. The donuts are made the day before and only the frosting is fresh prior to selling them. They're good, but could be much better served warm and fresh.
C Mc
Really good donuts!! Got gluten free too. Little on the pricey side and not a lot of flavors but worth it. Very filling!!!on street parking not the greatest.
Leala Smith
Amazing flavors and a super unique concept! Don't be afraid by them being made with potatoes; there is nothing off-putting about their taste! Highly recommend.
Rachelle Martins
Meh! Fellow NYC’ers, this is not worth the hype tbh. My friends and I went at 10am and they were already sold out. We got the last 3 gluten-free chocolate sea salt donuts and they were mediocre at best. I felt a bit sick after eating it.
Go v early if you really want a chance at other flavors
Pooja Mohess
Very big and delicious donuts. Not overly sweet.
Sheilla Thomas
Interesting place, cool atmosphere. Donuts are definitely different then what you would get at a store or through the local chain. Something to experience when out in Portland, but I wouldn't say it way our favorite spot.
Sidney Leonard
The donuts were excellent, my favorite was the coffee cake donut and my husband really liked the pomegranate donuts and the Boston cream. I would say to only buy what you can eat in a day or 2 as they go stale very quickly. I'm generally not a donut person but would go back. I'd like to try the sweet potato donuts next time. This would also be a Great spot to bring visitors from away, something different & delicious!
Caity Paulson
I was excited to try these, but honestly after waiting in line for 20 minutes and finally trying them, I was a little disappointed. The flavors were pretty good, but the donuts seemed rather dry and almost tasted stale. Not sure if this is because they are potato donuts? I thought that would make them a little chewier but the texture just seemed a little off.
Raymond Calcagno
Awesome.
Limited parking
Can order online to make things go quick
Bonnie Murray
Love, love the donuts , price is kinda high but worth the donuts.
Serena Beaver
Hard to describe how good these donuts are. They have a unique fluffiness. My favorite so far is the chocolate sea salt. A lot of people like the maple bacon. I'm not a fan but I don't like it at other donut shops either. I had apple cider, not coffee, which had a nice flavor.
Sarah Montalbano
We got there near close and got what was their last few donuts, but it was worth it for the novelty. We chose 4 different flavors and they were all delicious. I also got an iced americano with maple syrup that was good too.
Michaela m
I never go to Portland without visiting the holy donut! Great variety of delicious donuts and outstanding service!!! I get the gluten free ones, there's usually about a dozen gf flavors available, and probably double the amount of flavors of their regular potato donuts!
Thanks again!!!
Giuseppe Passalacqua
This place is famous in all USA. This is really deserved. Lovely donuts!
We tasted the bacon and marple, the chocolate and salt and the blueberry and lemon. All three were marvelous!!!
We took also two double espresso really good (also for our Italian taste...)
Worth a visit!!!
Matthew “Krow” Small
Absolutely best Donuts ever! Anywhere
Matt Dieter
Holy cow! Talk about good donuts! I would drive all the way back from Indiana just to get them again!
Maria
Don’t be afraid to wait in line, I promise it moves fast! These donuts are definitely worth trying. Not your average donut. These potato donuts are made from scratch. They have unique flavors to choose from and their coffee was pretty good.

These donuts are indeed "Holy" as they're a total religious "I've found Jesus" kind of experience!! They literally melt in your mouth & one of the ones I had today was from a batch so freshly made that it was STILL WARM (was one of the dark chocolate sea salt)!! Simply divine & heavenly!! I highly recommend the maple bacon donuts too!!
Timothy J
The donuts were delicious. You can order ahead online which makes the pickup process faster, since often there's a line. I recommend the maine apple cider glazed donut and the double chocolate sea salt!
Zach Shuster (ZShu730)
Such a superb place. Not even a huge doughnut eater, but I can't resist sinking my teeth into the chocolate sea salt donut, or the maple bacon. So many great options and they're always a reliable shop. Recommend to anyone in Portland.
Jasmine Mills
The Holy Donut has the very best donuts in town. I absolutely love them. They can be a little pricey, so i don't get donuts from them on a daily basis. I only buy them on special occasions but they are delicious. The best part is that the donuts are made from Maine potatoes! A+
Simon Tacvorian
Never had a potato donut before but they're amazing. We didn't even wait in line which I hear is unheard of. Had the maple bacon, sweet potato ginger glazed, triple berry, and dark chocolate glazed donuts and they were all great. Really fluffy and kind of chewy. Dark chocolate and sweet potato were definitely the best two we tried.
Anthony Santiago
I give this a 5 star rating because It is the greatest disappointment I have ever tried. It was so bland I thought I had Covid 19 symptoms again. The donuts were tasteless, oily, others were dry, and most flavors tasted the same. Not to mention the sad excuse of a cannoli flavored donut. The donuts remind me of the cloudy foggy weather of Maine that I know, and overhyping this place Is a crime against society. Before buying half a dozen of donuts, buy one and try it before wasting time and money.
Jesse Richards
Best doughnuts I've had in my life! If I could give them another five stars I would! Highly recommend the margarita, pomegranate, and ginger glazed doughtnuts
Cheryl Violette
My daughter and I visited Portland in late September and visited The Holy Donut on our first day. Great place, delicious donuts, coffee and friendly employees! If you are in Portland, Maine you need to pay them a visit.
Tony Spicer
The. Best. Donuts. I've. Ever. Eaten. They run about $30 a dozen, which took me a little aback, until I ate one. At that point, I realized that that was cheap at twice the price. I tried a variety of their donuts, approximately 10 different ones, and not one disappointed in any way. My favorites were the sweet potato with cinnamon sugar, and the blueberry. But they were all amazing. Fun fact: most Donuts go stale and are inedible the next day. Not these. Two days later they were still edible. Not as good as when fresh, certainly. There are three locations. Went to the location in downtown Portland, first, I found it too crowded for my sensibilities. The line extended to the end of the block and around the corner. At 11. On a Monday. But, because of the crowds, I decided to try their shop on Park Avenue. That was the right choice. It's just a neighborhood donut shop, and there were only about 7 people there. But their supply had obviously been hit pretty hard already, so it was clear that the shop is not unpopular. If you don't eat donuts from here, you will be sad, and not even realize why. Just go.
Shayna G.
My fiance loved the gluten free donuts. I was not keen on the flavor of the frosting on the regular donuts.
Lisa Ritota
So I showed up at this place today upon a recommendation from friends in Florida. Was only in town for a few hours. First time in Maine. Was bummed out they were closed but this sweet girl opened the door and I was able to snag a few of these potato based donuts. Wow so amazing. This is a definite must if in Portlsnd, Maine.
Steven Jefairjian
I like their donuts and there are plenty in the way of variety, type and flavors.
There's always a surprise flavor whenever I've gone in to buy a few on the way home. The fact that they use potato in the production is novel and is a wonderful way to utilize local produce. Try them and see how good they are... you will be pleased 😍🍩🍩🍩☕
Jeffrey Bloom
The coffee wasn't anything to rave about but the donuts were on another dimension. Absolutely delicious. A little on the pricey side but the donuts were so large you could only eat 1 or 2 in one sitting.
Nick Macfarlane
Very kind staff and solid selection of donuts. 1-2 donuts is more than enough per person. I must admit, they are a little overhyped as I don't see myself desiring to go back again, but if you're in Portland, you've got to try it at least once.
Jeremiah
Potato donuts aren't your average donut. They're a little more dense and some flavors can have a pretty greasy taste to them. The simple classics, like cinnamon sugar or even plain, are the best in my opinion. This place normally has a wait so plan accordingly!
David C
Parking can be hard to find, but the wait goes pretty quickly and the donuts are totally worth it! Unique thoughtful flavors and mochi-like texture, with honey lavender as the highlight for great taste and aroma.
Meena Oberoi
These are the best doughnuts I ever had. They are super moist, not overly sweet, and simply delicious. We reached the shop a bit late and they were closing up. A very kind and caring employee named Melissa took her time to help us. I would highly recommend this place to anyone in search of the perfect doughnut with the best customer service!
Dee P
Loved the donuts. They were really good fresh and hot, they werent as great when we ate them later in the day. Got their around 8am and there was not much of a line. Great variety of flavors and gluten free options were available.
Sarah Gumlak
This place is literally why I moved to Portland. Sounds extreme, but bear with me. It was my first intro to the magic of Portland culinary creativity. It was also my first intro to Portland's overwhelming kindness and welcoming attitude. This is tougher on the weekends now that they've become so popular that the line is often out the door (still worth the wait, promise), but when it's a bit quieter, the folks who work here are just the sweetest individuals. But right, the donuts. When I visit friends/parents elsewhere, they make me bring holy donut to them. Potato based, so a very exciting unique texture. Favs- fresh lemon; dark chocolate sea salt; maple bacon; triple berry; blueberry; honestly have never been disappointed by any flavor. There are gluten free and/or vegan options. Their iced coffee (by Coffee By Design) comes with coffee ice cubes.
Jennifer
Friendly staff and gluten free options! Donuts were cake like donuts but very good!
Tammy Y.
Delicious donuts! The texture is in between a cake and a yeast raised donut, so it's not super heavy or dense. Great flavor selections; we ordered the sweet potato ginger glazed and bourbon coffee (you can taste the bourbon in it).
Zach Stephenson
Best donuts in New England! My wife and I had The Holy Donut at our wedding in place of a cake, and it was a huge hit! Flavors range from Maple Bacon to Blueberry Lemon, Pomegranate to Dark Chocolate Coconut, and so many more. It is a must see when in Portland.
Trisha Mercury
These are the best donuts I've ever had in my life. The cheddar and bacon stuffed one is like eating a sin. I cannot wait to go back and have some more. The staff was also very nice.
Oliver Smith
So delicious and very Covid safe! Potato donuts have such a great consistency
Shawn Jordan
Absolutely amazing donut shop. The staff is friendly and polite, and the food is incredible. If I could give 500 stars I would.
Online ordering/pickup, delivery through several food delivery apps.
This place has just about everything your heart desires from a Donut Shop
Shelly M
The donuts are the best we have ever had. Anywhere! Worth the wait.
Audrey Heppe
Very good! I got the half a dozen where they choose them and the chocolate one was my favorite! Wish I got the bacon donut but that’s okay! Recommend to stop by and try it if you are in the area! Also recommend one donut because they are filling!
HD 40k
I just want to put out a review as a person from Portland.
Im annoyed how over hyped this place is. Its just a potato donut, they are only OK in Quality. And please don't buy 12, one or two will fill you up easy. Try other places
Gina Jadelis
Definitely one of the more tourist shops in the area. but definitely worth it. Would suggest going when they first opened because I was in Portland for 3 days and there was always a line for the donut shop. Very delicious donut- would recommend.
Patricia Gaddis
First stop upon arriving in Portland! Ordered six donuts of various flavors, honey lavender was the most interesting, holy cannoli still the favorite, but the other four we tried were all excellent, as always. They have expanded their coffee bar since my last visit, which took away some seating, and options for seats are stools at the windows,so if you are looking for a place to sit with a group this doesn't work well. Get the donuts to go,just get the donuts!! You won't regret it, and they are made with Maine potatoes, so they have to be good for you!
Matt S
Get the chocolate glaze and Triple Berry!
Taylor Mantzke
I have an unhealthy obsession with doughnuts, whenever I travel I stop at as many doughnut shops as possible. That said, The Holy Donut is easily the best doughnut shop I've been to between Washington DC and Portland, ME. The cannoli doughnut blew my mind, but everything else I tried was excellent.
They set the bar high for quality and taste, but what really sets this place apart from every other shop I've been to is that they offer a variety of vegan doughnuts. Vegan baking can be complex and difficult, so I was very interested in having a taste. The vegan doughnuts were, like everything else, excellent. If I did a blind taste test between the vegan and non-vegan doughnuts I would not be able to tell the difference.
They also have a coffee bar, complete with a handful of different kinds of drip coffee, delicious espresso, and beans available for purchase.
Amazing doughnuts and great coffee are literally a match made in heaven at The Holy Donut. #doughnuttouramerica
Yukiko Hikosaka
Made by potatoes. We got enough energy and ready for next trip!! Thanks👍 …
Emily Costello
Honestly, the donuts were (of course) delicious - but I think that this review is more for the staff I interacted with. Each and every person was SO kind, and so orderly in how they were handling all of the covid-restaurant procedures. I really appreciated being greeted so genuinely, especially first thing in the morning (pre-coffee). Thank you HD crew!
Hyatt Hostetler
Best donuts I have ever had in my life. I'm pretty sure they call this place holy donut because they descend directly from heaven every morning. I was traveling and don't really plan on coming back to the area, but if I ever do, it would be exclusively for these donuts.
kristen faverty
I am not a huge donut person. They are usually to sweet for my taste but I enjoyed half of my boyfriend's donut. The donut was very good, not to sweet and very different. They had many options to pick from that weren't the usual selection. But also had some of the classics there too.
Dani Herzog
The best donuts ever! The texture is so good.
Hannah Maguire
These donuts are quite good, they are a little dense since they are made with potatoes but still tasty. My favorite was definitely the sea salt chocolate donut... it just brings out the full flavor. The coconut and glaze was also really good.
Mackenzie Frackleton
Line moves quickly and the seasonal flavors are always worth coming back if you tire of the the usual delicious donuts. They're not great the day-after, but few donuts are.
Hannah Elless
"Holy donuts" this place is delicious! The gluten free options are incredibly tasty and you have a variety of choice. The service was friendly and thoughtful. I am so happy I got a chance to stop and eat here. What a gem! Get the Apple Cider donut if you can!
Emily McLaughlin
We had the vanilla sprinkle and dark chocolate cinnamon. The potato part had me skeptical but they were really good
Dennis Molla
Epic donuts. Best I’ve ever had.
Nate Hoy
Always busy, always tasty. They make really great donuts here and usually have a small selection of other breakfasty foods like sandwiches, and of course coffee. Holy Donuts are one of the things you choose if you want to bring a delicious dozen to work, but it's okay to enjoy one all to yourself too.
Piner
Seems like it is a Portland must have... Although the donuts are good, I don't think they deserve the hype they get in our food heaven. That said, I am often returning for more. Their style is on and their choices (if you go early) are fun. Their homerun donut "Maple Bacon" never has enough bacon. If bacon is the headliner, then make it so I can taste it....
Carolyn Hill
I am visiting my daughter who just graduated from UNE and she said "you can't visit Portland without getting donuts from The Holy Donut." Well... I have to say they are the best donuts I've ever had. The flavors are amazing! Take the time to stop in!
Cat Ly
The donut selection is so unique and fantastic, and the staff is very friendly! There seemed to be a good selection for gluten free donuts as well. I had a chai donut that was very much worth getting there before the sunrise! The coffee is also a good accompaniment for the donuts.
Robert Dennison
This place offers homemade donuts in a small variety of delicious one of a kind flavors. They serve delicious Coffee by Design coffee and you can assure that on a hot summer day your iced coffee will not get watered down because they use coffee ice cubes. If you're not a coffee drinker they offer other beverages in their cooler. They have outdoor seating as well as indoor seating and sell some Holy Donut merchandise.
Joe Roberts
Fantastic!! Really quick service, TONS of options, drive-thru, good coffee. Order the bacon cheddar!
Marissa C
These donuts are the best I've ever had! I was a little skeptical at first since they're made from potatoes, but I think that just makes them a special kind of delicious! They have a huge selection and many gluten free options as well. 10/10!
Stephen Collins
Ya ya another five star rating for The Holy Donut. You get it. I know. But here's the thing, I'm about to go back to all other donut ratings I've given and subtract a star just because this is the new five star. Voodoo in other Portland, you've 4 stars now. Quirky doesn't beat tasty. Many delicious vegan options - I loved the Lemon one the most.
Carolyn K
They have Gluten free doughnuts, and they are amazing!!!
Tyler Lund
The Holy Donut is a destination for donut lovers the world over. The donuts here are in high enough demand that they are nearly always fresh baked and warm. They are somehow made from potato but don't have a potato taste. The flavors are awesome and varied. The maple bacon was of course delicious since it has bits of bacon on it. The chocolate with coconut was even better as you could taste more of the donut. They are huge and pretty much a meal on their own. Though not dog friendly inside, well behaved dogs are allowed at the tables outside.
Eddy Perez
Love every flavor! if you're ever in Portland, Maine, you must try all the flavors!
Carly P
Got donuts from their other location and had to get more before returning home. Came here since the other location was closed and of course they were just as delicious and mouthwatering. Completely lives up to the hype!! Couldn't recommend more
Ron Lusk
These indeed are awesome donuts, worthy of all acclaim given them. My wife had a salted chocolate donut that might change her view of donuts forever. My lemon (?) donut was excellent, and the bacon and cheese breakfast donut made me think about moving to Portland.
Brian and Ruthie Dudley
Our family makes the Holy Donut a tradition every time we get together. We love the blueberry and salted chocolate flavors. I also like the gluten free options. It's a fun unique donut experience.
Amy Zuckerman
Ok I am not a "donut person" but we were told " ya HAVE to try them" I had a sweet potato coffee cake donut. WOE it was delish! I ate it in 3 sessions w coffee and it was just divine! Still not interested in donuts but this one is worth eating every single bite!
Blenda Towers
These donuts are incredible, and I love the creative flavor combos and unique variety! My current faves are the Holy Cannoli (the donut hole is filled with a generous amount of silky smooth Cannoli cream) and Maple Bacon (they sprinkle so much bacon (real bacon, mind you) on top that you have to eat it carefully if you don't want to leave a bacon trail behind you).
Hannah Olson
Really delicious variety. The dark chocolate sea salt is a favorite but the lemon is a surprise delight, and the sweet potato ginger is my go-to when I'm treating myself to two. Of course, if you're in good graces with your cardiologist, the bacon cheddar stuffed donut is the earthly embodiment of heaven.
Harry Rodriguez
Literally drove 2 hours from Central Mass to get Donuts..Worth every mile.
And yes.. being that they are a "potato"
Possibly some of the best delights I've had and I've been to a good number of bakeries..
Krispy Kreme, Mary Ann's, Yum Yums.. good donut shops but not worth me making a round trip of 4 1/2 hours for a dozen..
Maple Bacon Donuts for the win.. 😍
We purchased a dozen of Randomly stocked, like Lavander Honey, Coconut and Berry assortments but I made sure they had the Maple and Maple Bacon BEFORE we got to their location, as those sell Quick!
They do offer a great selection of Gluten free as well as Vegan friendly options too, so everyone gets to taste a piece of heaven.
You get what you pay for and in this case, it's a fantastic donut!
Kim Bronakoski
Simply had to try the famous Maine potato donuts before heading onto the next leg of our journey. Stopped by around 9:15 this morning and the line was nearly out the door - now while some would be deterred by this situation I find it a positive affirmation that this place rocks the donuts like nobody's business. While I appreciate a large selection it makes it difficult for me to stick to my plan of just getting 2 donuts but I stick to my guns and go for the Maple Bacon & Maine Apple and an ice coffee to wash them down. The Maine Apple was delicious, reminded me a bit of Jewish Apple Cake, chunks of delicious apple in nearly every bite. The Maple Bacon donut had a different consistency, more like a light cake style donut with creamy maple flavor complimented perfectly by the hickory salt of the bacon chunks it was generously topped with. The iced coffee was just what I needed to get me going and bonus points for the coffee ice cubes. Next time we're in town I'll definitely stop back and try the ginger sweet potato that a friend recommended.
Pam M
Oh my goodness. The donuts in this place is donut heaven! Everything is delicious.
jill izzo
Cute place. Lots of varieties of donuts especially gluten free. Super stoked to see so many gf choices!! Chocolate is amazing. It's a bit oily but it is a donut! Yummy
garry amor
Sad they discontinued the blueberry donut for this season , but had some other great donuts like chocolate sea salt and vegan triple berry ,they were delicious.
Make sure to order online it’s quick and easy
Rebecca Wisner
The prices here are high, but the donuts are far better quality. This place has ruined all other donuts for me. They're just that much better.
They do have gluten free and vegan options. I have tried the gluten free. If it wasn't labeled, I wouldn't be able to tell it tastes that normal.
Cathy Cinanni
I'm not sure if the maple bacon donuts are my favorite or the chocolate sea salt caramel or my favorite or maybe it's the vanilla chai I don't know it's hard to tell
hanna c
Potato donuts are not for me but good to try
Megan Norris
Amazing! Such a unique experience... Donuts of every flavor imaginable- even some you'd never think of! Better get there early though, they're open each day only till they sell out!
Ashley McCollor
There are always vegan and gluten free options here, and not the gross kind that taste like kale sand. Lemon and pomegranate balance out the fried taste super well, but the vanilla is a perfectly good traditional flavor. They serve CBD(brand) coffee, which isn't my favorite local roaster- bit the iced coffee comes with free coffee cubes. I don't know about you, but I cannot abide by watery coffee. It can be hard finding good dessert type food up here for people with dietary restrictions, and I am grateful for it! God is most definitely a donut!
se SG
i love holy donuts! we had chocolate cinnamon, chocolate sea salt and caramel chcolate stripe? one and my favorite one was chocolate sea slat one. i cannot wait to try old fashioned one and potato one.
Denise
Warning - their donuts are really dense! Unique but I prefer my donuts more doughy. There was a line so felt like the staff just wanted to rush us out even though it was our first time and we asked for some recommendations.
Markell Parks
Yum! Get there early or they’ll run out of the donut you want. But no matter what you get it’ll probably satisfy your craving! High recommend the cinnamon sugar apple!
Brian Baniewicz
Donuts were good, staff very helpful. Coffee was excellent
Rory Benjamin
The donuts here are as wonderful as any other Holy Donut location, with a polite staff ready to fill a bag with yummy treats for you. My only gripe with the Park Ave location would be the overall parking situation. It can be an exercise in frustration to find a suitable location to park your vehicle and run in to grab your donuts.
Gordon McAllister
Quite possibly the best doughnuts I have ever eaten! Also, I am a Maine potato farmer and love the idea of this organization striving to use local ingredients, especially potatoes. I have enjoyed each flavor thus far and cannot choose a favorite....my suggestion is to try them all and vote for yourself!
Brian Ha
It’s pretty good but a bit too sweet
Troy Higgins
Very good donuts. The taste is definitely not like Dunkin’ Donuts or Krispy Kreme. However, these donuts are much much better. It is better to go in the morning when there are still a wide variety of flavors available. I’ve noticed that in many businesses when they become very busy, customer service tends to go down. I was pleasantly surprised that at holy donut their service remains static and is very good. Thank you!
Mary Carmack
Just another 5-star review about the best donut [sic] shop in Maine. If you go late in the day they will most likely be out of the most popular flavors. Dark Chocolate Sea Salt will be gone, it is popular for a reason. If you go early in the day, it might be crowded. Brave the crowds! DCSS is worth it.
Patricia Nunez
We were not expecting to like these donuts as much as we do now! It is a non-negotiable stop when we go to Mount Dessert Island. Try to come during the blueberry season! Plus service is friendly and tea is good.
Grace W
I really don’t get the hype with this place. The donuts are OK. Nothing to write home about… I was not impressed. I am hoping the other donut spots in town are better!
Stephen Swingle
Expect a line at both locations, but the upside is the great donuts. I recommend the toasted coconut. I thought it would be good, but it surpassed my expectations. Also, the cinnamon and sugar and the blueberry are really great as well.
Peyton Curran
Best donuts in Maine. Hands down. 🖐️ Made from Maine potatoes. Sounds weird, but it taste like a donut, just more filling, and more dense. Many flavors to choose from. They even have a berry ricotta one right now, that's like eating a berry cannoli, and a donut at the same time. Don't leave until you've gotten at least a half dozen. …
Brittany Brossett
These doughnuts are amazing! Staff was very friendly and we got served quickly. It’ll be a staple place we visit whenever we’re in the area.
Daryl Byrne
As you probably figured out a holy donut is an unusually different tasty treat that you must try!
Brian Pious
I am a big fan of donuts and have found Holy Donut's variety to be consistently delivered without fail. When buying a dozen I may forget what some of them are, but I do not worry because they are all so good and the family loves sitting around a table cutting them up and sharing.
Nathan Gagne
As usual, the best Donuts ive ever had. Smooth crisp on the outer layers, soft and moist on the inside. I didnt know you could have apple filling IN a hole donut. MIND BLOWN
Only nitpick id say is they are always so busy and theyve had to reduce in shop seating as a result.
Its grown since its early days and i think a good ole expansion on this location would do wonders!
MIKHAIL FISHMAN
How good can a donut really be? Can it really be worth over 2$ a piece esp outside of big cities?
At Holy Donut its a, rather unholy, hell yes!!
While all donuts were great, the Cannoli donut was magisterial! A cloud of sour cream and cheese filling surrounded by a warm lemony halo of donut heaven.
When I purpose, I will seriously consider this donut in lieu of a ring!
Austin Mehlhorn
Amazing, every single donut I've had here has been my favorite. My super favorite is definitely the maple bacon. You cannot go wrong. If you have friends coming to town or you are visiting, you have to try the holy donut.
Bruce Miles
I prefer a lighter fluffier donut. These were dense. Flavors were ok not as imaginative as others I've had. They did taste good and was worth trying.
Mark Hwang
First off... why doesn’t this exist across the country??
We need more Donut places like this!
We had the coffee cake, the dark chocolate with coconut crumbs, and the blueberry one.. all three were amazing!! And the cold brew coffee.... oh my gosh, cold brew was amazing... even better than SBX or Dunkin.
Umair Ishaq Khan
The triple berry holy cannoli has to be one of my top five all time favorite donuts!! But you could tell that the baker put in a lot of love and care even in the regular vanilla glazed donuts. The coffee was a perfect roast too!!
Cynthia De Jesus
I love a good story about self made businesses, such as the creator of holy donut. It wasnt far from the airbnb I stayed at. There are many types and flavors of donuts and there is also seating inside. I wish the owner/creator much success also.
Andrew Johnson
The best donuts in great Portland, easy. Probably the best Donuts I have ever had anywhere. Really a must stop for any visitors to Portland and if you live in Portland and you don't frequent this establishment on a regular bases we probably couldn't be friends. If you are only going to try one, pay the extra cents, for a Holy Cannoli.
Nick Macklin
Absolutely the best donuts I have ever had. The flavor is great for sure but what sets these apart is the texture/consistency. A little spring when you first bit in and then a perfectly cakey inside!
Pete Carscallen
Super delicious donuts. Maple bacon was a fave
Karla Jackson
OMG. So good. The donuts are to die for. Hubs got a blueberry lemonade and a chocolate cinnamon that he loved. I got the egg frittata which was amazing. It's a must do when you're in Portland. Lines get long, but they move pretty fast. Great coffee too.
Samantha Becker
The place was clean and the staff was friendly. It took us 1 hour and thirty minutes to get there. The donuts were just okay in my opinion. I won't go out of my way to go there again though.
Sarah Henderson
Woah! Where to start. Donuts were amazing (Maine blueberry was the group winner), but the breakfast sandwiches with nut free pesto were outstanding. Also have to respect a place that makes coffee ice cubes for your iced coffee. Lines can be expected but they move quickly.
Bethie
Really yummy donuts and coffee. Vegan and gluten-free options as well. There might be a line but they are pretty quick. I think flavors of donuts change often.
Kelly Ward
The flavor options are diverse and interesting, the donuts are delicious, and their use of an unique base ingredient of mashed potatoes give it a fun and tasty new take on donuts. And don't even get me started on their bacon, cheddar breakfast donut. It is UNREAL!!
Elisabeth Solchik
A local told us to visit during our quick day trip to Portland. Staff recommended the lemon and the chocolate coconut, and they were delicious. We also got an old fashioned for the toddler's first donut and she loved it!
Jason LaMountain
Great donuts. Went to a place in Toronto a while back that sells $7 donuts. Theirs weren't half as good as The Holy Donut's. They're still a bit pricey, but their potato-flour donuts are wonderful.
Anthony Panetta
Believe me, you haven't experienced donuts until you've had The Holy Donut. If you have a chance to go, just go. Let's put it this way, I live almost two hours away and that doesn't phase me at all. The best donut is all of them!
Trisha Aguinaldo
It’s my first time in Portland. Every trip recommendations mentioned trying a few donuts at this place, so per usual I was skeptical. But I tried the savory donuts (broccoli cheddar and bacon cheddar) freshly fried and they were worth the hype! My favorite donut was the holy cannoli and the whoopie pie ice coffee. Worth the wait. I recommend coming in here right when they open. Parking situation is not great either, which is why I knocked off a star.
Chris Pine
I’m a long time fan of these doughnuts and very few others, but I was pretty sad that the gluten doughnuts were starting to make me sick. I stopped going for a while, thinking that was it for me and the Holiest of Doughnuts. My last visit to this location, I was prepared to suffer for my love of these doughnuts. I was prepared to be in pain and [REDACTED] for these doughnuts, I love them that much. And then I saw the gluten free doughnuts. I FORGOT they had gluten free doughnuts!! I was so happy I bought way more than I could actually afford, and ended up eating one and half on the way home.
Keith Jordan
These are much better than I thought! Very expensive, but technically you do get what you pay for. I don't like the request a tip as you trying to pay with a credit card, I don't like tip in general. Please pay your crew enough and don't request tips, these Donuts are plenty expensive to be able to cover good wages!
Elizabeth Eubanks
Went to both Holy Donut locations and both were great. I did notice that this one has fresh squeezed orange juice that was delicious. The line was very long when we arrived but worth the wait.
wghats
These donuts are so good that most of them did not survive the ride home. very very good
Manju Mathew
Caramel apple is delicious! We went back to get more donuts to share. Staff is also friendly. First time no wait, 2nd time was like a 10 minute wait. Worth it.
Joe Nastri
OMG. Very good creative and healthier donuts in Portland ME made from scratch (still hand-cut every donut) and continue to use wholesome ingredients (these donuts are made with fresh Maine potatoes and highest quality dark cocoa powder / 60% dark chocolate chips in all chocolate donuts and glazes, and glaze colors are only fruit juices or vegetable dyes, no fake color). Prices are not cheap however, can be a bit of sticker shock for some (hey healthy has its costs). Pleasant staff and quick service. The Park Ave location has some tables and chairs to sit, but it isn't a space meant for large groups. I'll be back to try more flavors on my next visit.
Chrissy Bordenkircher
OMG... Must try! Some of the best donuts ever!!! Staff was great also!
Edwin Gonzalez
Traveled up from Boston to try these highly regarded donuts during a family trip. I liked them but I wasn't blown away. Maybe it was the time of the day or because it was New Year's Eve. Will come back in the future.
Rebecca Stearns
The best donuts hands down. Potato based donuts and gluten free options this Portland treasure has something for everyone. The queue is worth the wait. Grab an extra box to ship back to loved ones!
Jeffrey Dean
The sweet potato ginger donut was probably the best donut I've ever had. I was disappointed in the chai. The texture was still outstanding though. Can't wait to go back and try other flavors. Their use of potato in the dough really seems to be the key here!
Mg 0
Very large, very... rich (read : greasy) doughnuts. The texture is tenderer than most other cake-type donuts. I like that they’re not too sweet. But be prepared for a stomachache. (I write this fully recognising that these are doughnuts !)
Really good coffee.
Josiah Dykstra
Loved the chocolate sea salt but not maple bacon. Definitely get the bacon cheddar (savory)! Long lines, so order ahead online for pickup.
zmpire1 Louis
A little different the workers were not particularly friendly and were busy talking to each other the bacon and cheddar filled donut was almost delicious if it wasn't over fried and burnt a little, but I do it again but it wasn't great, very very very pricey!!! Two donuts and a cup of coffee for $14. I would cut the number of workers and lower the price a lot of staff for slow service and overcook donuts.
Sam Bishop
Vegan donuts were so-so but had a try of my mom's wild blueberry and it was awesome. Just wish they had more vegan options.
Ryan Higgins
I hate donuts, but when soo many people said give this place a try, I figured why not. Got the sea salt donut and the maple bacon donut. HOLY DONUTS!!! these were amazing. Highly suggest giving them a try if you are in Portland, you won't be disappointed.
Colleen Smith
Always a must when I’m in town! Gluten free donuts are kids fave and my husband loves their vegan options! And me? Those maple lattes are the best!
Michelle Finan
I cannot say enough good things about these doughnuts. They have a great flavor selection and the consistency of the dough is perfect. Great coffee and really cute merchandise.

Okay, I see what the fuss is about. I’ve been all over & this is is the most amazeballs donut I’ve ever eaten. I thought it would be crowded & planned to be hearded through like cattle but these ladies were friendly & there was plenty of seating in this low-key spot. I cannot wait to get back to Portland. Even though they giggled at my accent. I WAS a long ways from home after all. Way better than voodoo donuts. Keep up the great work!

The donuts were so good. Fruit juice was excellent

Nice place, doughnuts were good if a bit crumbly. Potato doughnuts are dense, cake like . . my first trip here so I have admit that while they are not the best doughnuts I've had, they are worth trying again. Didn't try the coffee, maybe next time. Quite expensive.

As an experienced doughnut connoisseur, I can safely say that these are some of the best doughnuts I've ever eaten. I say this from 76 years of experience in tasting doughnuts in nearly every state, and around the world. I'm especially enthusiastic about the lemon doughnuts. They are a real treat. We'll go back, and try other flavors, but will always get at least one lemon doughnut. I'm waiting eagerly for The Holy Donut to open an Augusta shop. Thanks for delivering these wonderful treats to the people of Maine.
