This is such a great place to get some interesting donuts. The variety is quite fantastic with an array of toppings and fillings that will give you plenty to try over time. I will also say that these donuts are quite huge vs. your normal trip to dunkin or the like. I had ordered three dozen for a 6am pickup and I walked in and walked out with a wonderful supply of soft and fluffy pastry rings. Coffee is great as is the other snacks and treats. The place is pretty much exclusively cared for by high school/collage age kids that are pretty awesome workers that are quite professional while taking care of customers. I have been going here for years and that won't change anytime soon!

Cranky Al's is a family favorite and we have overall enjoyed their donuts. Favorites are the Reese's and the maple bacon. Their online ordering system is easy to use and convenient, and their staff has always been friendly. We especially enjoy the yeasted donuts - they can be so light and fluffy! Giving 4 stars instead of 5 because we have been disappointed with the taste / amount of the fillings, including both cream and fruit filled, and some donuts have been smaller than expected. We ordered a raspberry filled donut and there was hardly any filling, and the cream filling was not fluffy and sweet as expected. For the price point, we expected more.

Great Service. Great Donuts. They were out of glazed raised by time I got there at 10am. I got a breakfast bowl. Egg, onion, jalapeño, cheddar and hash brown. They throw in some salsa and sour cream. It was decent. Not something id go back for I will go back for donuts though!!! 😁

Friendly staff and fresh, delicious food! I went in for donuts and left with donuts and the breakfast veggie pizza. The vegan donuts are such an awesome offering for those like my daughter with milk allergies or preference for vegan lifestyles. Everything was great! Their posted hours: Tues-Fri 6am-1pm Sat & Sun 6am-2pm (Closed Mon)

Tosa donuts. We had the eggnog crueller (less cinnamon and nutmeg and more coconut imo), the pistachio cake (so good and not overly sweet), the hoity toity (meh. Its a chocolate iced and filled donut with sprinkles), and the Samoa (which was also so good. The crunch on the top was perfect!) Ultimately a nice place with solidly good donuts. Ultimately I'm missing that donut frying smell and the crispy bits you get on some really fresh fried donuts. We got there at 10.30 on a Sunday, so I don't know if we were late or if their production schedule is way early or what, but I'd still go back.

Best doughnuts around, travelled over a half hour to get them. Always fresh and a great variety. Get there early, was there 5 minutes after it opened at 6am and there was a line and things were flying off the shelf!

These donuts are SO good. There are so many different kinds to choose from. You can also order ahead online as the line is usually always long, but worth it! Tried the Samoa and blueberry lemon donuts which were both delicious and so fresh!

We LOVE Cranky Al's and get their donuts maybe too much :) We love them so much that we had them cater our wedding dessert! Joey was so easy to work with! We got a big donut "cake" to cut that was super cute and DELICIOUS, and then got mini donuts for everyone else to have for dessert. Would highly recommend for a unique dessert opportunity!

the donuts are delicious, the coffee is wonderful, and the staff is oh so kind- we are very happy that at least as of this writing in Aug 2022 they are open for in person visits and selections. -gluten free options are very decent, though not the most amazing of all baked goods I have ever consumed- HOWEVER it is so cool to be able to go to one place and snag donuts for the whole family- there are most often tree nut free/ safe options, gluten friendly options, and the classic gluten full delicacies. Our family is always amazed and appreciative of the patience of the front staff as we waffle and decide and the kids change their minds three times before we walk out the door with our purchase

You can't really complain about a donut shop around the corner from your house, but this truly is a friendly, quick and delicious establishment. They have gluten friendly donuts along with customizable donuts if you order online which is so fun!

The ownership and their team have been fantastic. We have been going for the past 3 years and never had any negative experiences. Two things to note - their donuts are popular for a reason and will sell out most popular items early. Either have a contingency plan or order online Also, if you have a dog. Don’t expect it to be allowed entry.

This place is great. They were the star of the show at donut fest in Milwaukee and their donuts were just as good in store. If you do plan on visiting, either show up early or order online at least a day in advance. We elected to order online and we got to skip the massive line to pick up our order.

Staff is as great as the donuts. Maple bacon might be our favorite but they are all delicious. I definitely recommend either ordering the day before and picking them up or getting there might early too avoid the lines.

Gluten free donuts are delicious (wish they’d throw in a fun flavor every once in a while but won’t complain too much). We’ve also had some hot breakfast items (breakfast bowl, burrito) that were larger than expected and very good.

READ THIS…. After more than I can count visits spanning multiple millenniums being on a diet one Friday morning, I thought I’ll try the cinnamon roll… IT WAS AMAZING!!! The inside perfectly flakey with crispness on the edges. The frosting, perhaps cream cheese based, has just a kiss of sweetness, marvelous with its slightly gooey texture. Cranky Al's is the best place for morning coffee and donuts. Always friendly staff. Their pastry is always cooked correctly and never scrimped on size. They have a small seating area, but most business is carry out.

We've been coming to Cranky's for 5 years just for donuts. We live an hour away, and today we branched out and could not have been more delighted. We have the meat lovers breakfast pizza and the waffle battered chicken with syrup. Both were phenomenal. I highly recommend trying their different breakfast options. The best donuts in Milwaukee. I only eat donuts once a month. So, when I moved to Milwaukee I decided to find a donut shop where I continue my thingy. However, I tried a lot of shop, like really a lot. And the most were “MEH.” Until I tried Cranky Al’s. It is another world!

Tosa donut spot. Was quite busy on Saturday morning, letting you know they have great donuts. Prices are pretty typical, some breakfast options were a bit too pricey for me. The cruller is their best seller and it is really good. Also like the apple fritter.

Cranky Al's made our donuts for our wedding! Rather than going with a traditional and boring cake, we decided to go with donuts and it was one of the best decisions we made for our wedding! Our guests LOVED the donuts and the variety that we had! The donuts were so beautiful and tasty and we had many to spare by the end of the night (not to mention cheaper than we would've gotten for a boring old cake)! Donuts have a nice crisp outter shell but on the inside they are warm and moist. They are packed with awesome flavors and the variety is great. We've had chocolate cake donut, peanut cake donut, and kit Kat donut..all super delicious! We also had some of their breakfast food which was good, but the donuts are definitely the show stoppers!! Chicken and waffle bites are super tasty too, I highly recommend. Plus our donuts were all a dollar a piece!

Great doughnuts. Fantastic pizza at 6am. I wanted to maintain a 5, the apple fritter was amazing. But for some reason it took over 20 minutes to get my sandwich. That doesn't include line time. This is a casual place. That wait time after ordering is ridiculous. 25 minutes now. If I hadn't paid I'd walk out. Got the Sandwich. Maybe it was the wait but it seems unimpressive. Fritter, not pictured, was delicious. They forgot my bacon, which I wanted on the sandwich. Just got it on the side.

Good people here running this business. Ate breakfast here and thoroughly enjoyed my meal. I had chorizo tacos. Would have liked to try the breakfast pizza but one can only eat so much. Large selection of donuts but I only ate one. Again one can only eat so much. ;) Lemon donut was delicious! There is a self serve water station and they sell some crafty donut themed merchandise as well.

Good quality donuts and coffee options. No indoor seating other than the 8 inch windowsill ( not a true seat). I understand the waffle bites are amazing(Waffle batter chicken bites with maple syrup).

Their donuts do not disappoint! I especially love the old fashioned and cake ones. The breakfast sandwiches here are also pretty good. If you are picking up breakfast on the weekend, then I recommend ordering ahead. They can get pretty busy.

Peanut Butter Buttercream: Cranky Al's is a coffee/doughnut/pizza shop (trifecta of yumminess), located in East Tosa (Wauwatosa for you non locals). This is my third doughnut review from their shop and today I have their Peanut Butter Buttercream Doughnut (PBBD). Its appearance is a bit deceptive as the exterior looks like it is simply a sprinkled yeast/raised doughnut. Adorning the top of the doughnut is a sweet vanilla icing that has an ample amount of yellow and black sprinkles. Taking a big bite from the doughnut reveals that the interior is packed with a delectable sugary peanut butter buttercream filling. I want to emphasize that it is not actual peanut butter, but buttercream (not a complaint). Since the filling is not actual peanut butter it is much sweeter and lighter in texture. A cool glass of milk compliments this doughnut perfectly. This was a superb dessert; I think Cranky Al's is now my go to Doughnut shop even if it is a bit of a journey from my home. If you live in Tosa and haven't been here you need to make it happen. My kids love the donuts and I love how excited they get. Good coffee and egg sandwiches, as well. Can get busy on weekends, so plan to wait a few minutes in line.

Regardless of whether you’re eating one of their classic or specialty donuts, you’re definitely going to have a tasty experience. Service: 5/5. The staff were young, friendly, and accommodating. The guy who took my order had no problem answering questions about their menu. Vibe: 5/5. Eclectic, family-owned donut shops hold a special place in my heart. It was super busy when I was there, but it just felt good to know everyone there was enjoying the same food. Cost: 4/5. Like I said, I’m a Krispy Kreme man. The donuts are definitely worth it, but I wish they could be worth it AND a little less expensive. I used to live over here and this was my first time back since moving. I have a few favorite menu items -- this one's the tomato 3 cheese bagel sandwich. It has a firey ghost pepper cheese (among other cheeses), and it is not for the weak!!! Staff is always friendly and quick. I've never known this place pre-COVID but I can't wait to safely be able to sit here and enjoy my breakfast. Also, another great breakfast choice is the chorizo burrito. It's MASSIVE and goey and everything that a burrito should be!!! I love Cranky Al's!!

We love Cranky Al's! We even drive all the way from Grafton to get them from time to time. We had an issue last time where we paid for 6 donuts but when we got to the car we noticed only 5 in the box. We were hesitant to go back, but we did and one of the owners helped us out and got us our 6th donut. We really appreciate the awesome staff and I would recommend everyone to try their donuts!

Donuts are amazing! Staff are friendly and helpful. Very popular, so it's a good idea to order early. I give a top recommendation to this Tosa favorite. I celebrated 50 trips around the sun recently, bought a donut for each year, and brought them in to work. I opened the box a few minutes after 8AM, and they were all gone by 8:50. Also just tried a breakfast burrito -- delicious!

Amazing donuts I visit every month when I am working in milwaukee! Also very friendly and professional staff. I was particularly impressed this time because I went on a Saturday and the way they handle social distancing is extremely professional. This place is popular, its got the trendy "I'm a smaller independent shindig restaurant on North Ave" Tosa feel for sure. I came in on a Friday morning. Note, you may not dine in, and with no booths or tables, the place feels kinda like a garage with the punk band crowd of all ages- and not all punk. The donuts seem to be the thing here. The wait for my order was bearable. I had the breakfast tacos. Good.

Love the veggie pizza. Unfortunately, they got my order wrong on my most recent order but it gave me the opportunity to try the meat pizza which is also good, but I prefer the veggie pizza. The owner went above and beyond to make things right and I updated my 4 star rating to a 5. The donut portion of the order was correct and delicious as always. We prefer the buttercream filled options but it is one of the few local places that offers the sugar donut, my mother-in-law's favorite. They also have gluten free if you need that option. Take advantage of ordering early online and curbside pickup...it really helps when you have to cart around an infant.

I'll give the benefit of the doubt. I'm sure the donuts are amazing based on the reviews but I wouldn't know as all the donuts were sold out by the time I got there, which was around 10:30am. Maybe that's common and now I know better for next time. Just a thought, if your open till 11:30am, maybe try to have enough donuts until then, otherwise, what's the point?

Seriously the best donuts I've ever had. We moved away and still come back for these and their breakfast any chance we get. Breakfast bagel sandwiches are delicious, bagels are great quality and have an awesome crunch. Breakfast wraps are huge and very tasty. Very interested to try more items from their newer/larger menu. Quick add: 5/29/21 We ordered a giant buttercream filled donut for our son as a surprise for his 8th grade graduation. I would highly recommend it! Looked awesome and tasted great! Thank You! Huge fans of Cranky Al's! We started going here after my hubby read an article from Alton Brown, he recommended going here for the best crullers hes had. So we tried it out and Alton is right, and bonus, the other donuts are awesome too! We have yet to find something we didn't like. They offer other foods, including pizza in the afternoons but we have yet to try anything other than the donuts.. some day! For Mother's Day my son and hubby took me and got their "MOM" donuts, they were great. We have had 1 issue in the past where items were missing and they quickly fixed the issue, clean store, awesome service and awesome food. Seriously check them out, and go early, they get busy fast!

My husband and I were looking for donuts to add to our dessert bar for our wedding reception, and Cranky Al’s did not disappoint! Joey was great at working with us to determine what flavors our guests would love most, and he was spot on with how many donuts to order. When it comes to their service, I couldn’t have asked for better! When the donuts were picked up that morning, they were accidentally dropped and needed to all be re-made. Joey made sure they were all re-made and delivered BEFORE I even got there (I had no idea there was even an issue). We had SO many compliments about how delicious the donuts were and they were a BIG hit! If you are considering using Cranky Al’s for your wedding donuts, definitely choose them! They’re the best of the best!

Best donuts in Wisconsin? I haven't tried every donut shop in the state but they'd have my vote. Staff is always friendly. Donuts are always delicious. All the food options are actually. Plus they've started offering GF and vegan options. Now more people can enjoy their donuts. Good on them.

Wedding review: We worked directly with the owner, Joey! We met with him a couple months before the wedding and he was super nice to work with! He explained everything and gave prices up front! It was also nice that during coivd and the unpredictable times he did not require any deposits and no payments until day of just in case we were unable to have the wedding. Which we appreciated since so many places require non refundable deposits. Day of Joey came and set everything up! He also came the next morning to take down and clean up! The donut wall looked great! We had multiple different large donuts, mini donuts and then a donut cake for my husband and I. Everyone LOVED them and kept asking about them. We are now going to go get donuts from Cranky Al’s every anniversary :)

Cranky Al's is certainly not cranky! I made a mistake with my order ahead order, mind you it was absolutely 100% my mistake. The staff were absolutely wonderful, and helped me remedy the situation with no added charge. Great donuts. Waffle bites didn’t really have a waffle flavor or texture in batter - just tasted like any other chicken nuggets. Veggie burrito and bagel sandwich were good. Place is super busy though and it took them 40+ min to make my food... they said that the kitchen was backed up but plenty of people who ordered food after me got theirs before me.

I've been to Cranky's a few times now, and have been happy with the experience every time, the staff is always helpful, and while I've only had donuts in my few times here, they have been excellent every time, and I do have every intention to visit Cranky's again in the future to try some of their other menu items.

We decided to go with the mini donuts so that people can sample more than 1 and when we met with Joey the first time, he told us we could really go with any flavor we wanted, even if it wasn’t on the menu. Since we both love Twix, we went with a Twix donut as our specialty one and it was delicious!! Joey is very quick to respond with texting so I recommend that over email.

That said, I wish they’d upgrade their curbside ordering process. Regularly, we have problems with staff finding orders. They always seem to think we placed an online order, when it’s always by phone. When you bring this up, they can be rude. Just trying to support a small business during a pandemic. 🤷‍♂️ Here’s hoping things improve because this is literally my favorite place in the world for breakfast.

They have plenty of seating, but people really like the donuts and slowly pick. You can pre-order 24 hours ahead, so definitely do that if you get more than a dozen.

I first noticed Cranky's as I would commute the area then I began getting curious when I always saw long lines out the door. I looked them up online and saw they had 5 Star ratings so I knew I had to try them for myself. So I followed their order day before rules and my day came on January 16 2021 and OMG, these are the best Donuts I've ever had I just wish I could go back in time to have them when I first noticed them. Cranky's has variety from classic to more modern donuts and they offer other breakfast it's such as bagel sandwich and burritos which I have not tried yet but I did try their Meat Lovers breakfast pizza. I recommend Cranky's over any other donut shop within 50 miles of Milwaukee County so it's beyond pleasure to give them 5 STARS

UPDATE: The owner replied. Here is my suggestion for the business: I have had a circadian rhythm disorder for 9 years. "When you wake up in the morning" - I don't, that's the problem. By the time I'm up, I cannot 1) Come in person 2) Call on the phone to order 3) Order online. So, I have no options. That means only once in a blue moon can I get these donuts (hence 3 years I spent chasing these down). Please add an option to your online ordering that customers can order for DAYS AHEAD. Why is the only option to order for 24 hours in advance? I'm not complaining about the 24 hour cutoff - the business needs to consolidate orders ahead of time to reasonably make them - I'm saying the ordering window is too tight. I would like to be able to order donuts at 9 PM for two days ahead, for example. THAT should be an option, but isn't currently on the website. If I could order days ahead, I could send my husband or friends to pick them up. I hope this can be considered. Excellent vegan donuts. But not entirely happy with the experience. The hours are very bad. And the ordering process is insanely bad. You can only come here at the crack of dawn otherwise they’re closed, if you come later in the morning they’re sold out of everything, the line is out the door, and if you want to pre order? Yeah that has to be done at the crack of dawn as well, because they “don’t accept orders after noon” for the next day. So unless you literally have alarms on your phone + a calendar appointment to set aside time 24 hours in advance, at like 7am the day ahead, you won’t be able to order your donuts. So while the donuts are good, I have been trying to come to cranky als for the vegan donuts for about 3 YEARS but they were closed, sold out, or not accepting orders every single time! I had to chase after them for 3 years!!! And so I wouldn’t come back. Like I said, the hours and the ordering are waaaayy too horrible. But they have plenty of customers so I guess they won’t be changing their infuriatingly bad setup anytime soon. Coming to cranky als just makes me cranky...

This is such a fun place to take my kids to get a donut! The staff are always friendly and engaging. It's a warm, inviting environment. Depending what time of day you go, you may not be able to get indoor seating. It's definitely a local favorite. As far as gluten free options: I stick with a coffee and the breakfast tacos (no cheese). They're served on thick corn tortillas (locally made), with a choice of bacon or sausage (I think there is one more meat option) mixed in with the eggs. It's topped with fresh tomatoes and lettuce. You have the option of adding avocado. It comes with sides of sour cream and salsa. You get three to an order. Overall: great service, good food, and good people!

I love donuts but not necessarily sugar or super sweet things. (I don't get it either) I love Cranky Al's. I've only been there once so I wouldn't say I'm an expert, but the donut selection is great, and they don't seem to load them up with artificial flavors and extra sweeteners. I had a maple donut and a cruller and both were just right. More savory than sweet. The coffee was good too. This made a great halfway stop on a 50 mile bike ride. It's right on the bike lane too!!

Come back at night for pizza \ fries \ wings \ fish fry. It's all great. Every time we go to Cranky Al's we know the food and experience will be excellent. Because it's so good the line can get a bit long at peak times but don't worry. The line can be out the door and you'll be at the counter and ordering in under 5 minutes. Fast, friendly, excellent. I got a chocolate sprinkle donut and a sausage, egg, and cheese bagel sandwich, and let me tell you. That sandwich was the best breakfast sandwich I’ve had in my life. A sausage egg and cheese bagel is my go-to breakfast, so I consider myself something of a connoisseur. I am not exaggerating when I say it’s the best I’ve ever had. For anyone interested in checking it out, my piece of advice is to get there early if you want some of their special donuts because by the time we got there (around 10:30ish on a Sunday), all they had left were the classics like vanilla frosted, chocolate sprinkle, and vanilla longjohn.

Cranky Al’s has THE best donuts in the Milwaukee area but I’m more impressed by their customer service and friendly atmosphere!! Our latest experience is a perfect example...we placed an online order for Father’s Day and when we picked them up we got the wrong box due to all the confusion of a busy Sunday morning combined with Father’s Day. I called them and had to return to the store to get the correct box. The whole thing was dealt with the right way so even when there’s a mix up, which probably isn’t that often, they make sure their customers are left happy. I couldn’t recommend a place anymore than I recommend Cranky Al’s.

This is my go to for donuts. The Apple Fritters are the best I've ever had. It's not uncommon for the line to wrap around the dining area, but it moves quickly. The breakfast burritos are a decent size too, but they take a little while so prepare to wait 10-15 min for one on a busy morning. They also offer the pizzas at several other establishments around Wauwatosa - Camp Bar and the Hoyt Park beer garden, to name a few. It's definitely good for pre-made pizza, but it's on the expensive side.

This is a quaint little donut/coffe shop in Tosa. The staff is friendly and courteous. Their donuts are fresh and we thoroughly enjoyed the maple bacon donut- a maple iced long john with a full strip of bacon nested on top. The black and tan is a vanilla cake donut with chocolate icing - it was very moist, not dry at all as cake donuts can be. Their icing is thick, creamy and not waxy at all. I recommend the breakfast burrito or breakfast tacos. They are stuffed full and oh so fresh. Next time, I try breakfast sandwiches, or maybe even the pizza.

If this is a higher more fresh quality of a donut then I'm used to the cheaper stuff. First time customer but would go again. Communication from ordering drinks was off. Orders our coffees but wasnt given a number, when I asked how we will know they are ready the employee said it would just be called out. No one called out the drink name and we only heard numbers so a bit confusing. Otherwise it was nice.

This review is solely on the doughnuts from Cranky Al's as we have yet to go indulge in the pizza (which we've only heard amazing things about). My husband and I have been getting doughnuts every Sunday for the past few years. It's our little thing each week. When we lived in Texas we went to an amazing local place with no frills doughnuts that were awesome. When we moved back to Wisconsin we were looking for something similar so we could avoid the chain doughnut places. We stumbled across Cranky Al's and have never looked back. They have so many doughnut choices your head will spin. Their classic doughnuts are solid and I have yet to find a better black and tan in all of Milwaukee. If you're feeling more adventurous then grab a gummy bear doughnut or maple/bacon one! It's always a riot to see my nephews' reactions when I give them a doughnut with M&M's on it because it's like they died and went to heaven. The prices are completely reasonable for the quality of doughnuts you're getting as well. There's another local place that charges $3+ for a single doughnut which is insane in my opinion. Hands down Cranky Al's is the place to go in the Tosa area. You will not regret it, and the line out the door every Sunday morning should be a clear indicator of that!

I also tried a chorizo burrito (I typically don't eat or care for chorizo bye the way). So I was being very adventurous. The burrito was constructed with obvious care with intent to have an excellent presentation along with great taste like I make my own food. If I cared for chorizo it was near perfection. I ate 1/2 of the Big Burrito which was served with sour cream and salsa. Next time I will definitely try the meat lovers burrito! I really like this place.

Cranky Al's -- or now Cranky's, as it seems to have been renamed -- is where Wauwatosa comes together for coffee and bakery. My favorite part is its feeling of community. Early on weekend mornings, the locals visit in hordes. With good reason, too. Cranky's serves their customers well. Their cruellers rock and, for me, are the star of bakery lineup. Otherwise, Cranky's is all-around okay. Not the strongest coffee in town, but serviceable with doughy sugar bomb. They've got pizza at night too. I've had it a few times. It's good, but if you're really craving the best pizza, you may wish to visit elsewhere though I will admit, at the time I right this (June 2017) there does seem to be a dearth of pizza joints in Wauwatosa. Hmm...
