I had a wonderful experience at Santa Monica Motors! I originally went in for a smog check and then realized that they also offer registration services for out of state vehicles. I came to Santa Monica Motors to get smog tested before registering my car in CA. Turns out, I could register WHILE I got smog tested. Santa Monica Motors patiently helped me navigate through the painful process of out-of-state car registration while I called my bank and auto dealer. They were champs! The smog test took about 15 minutes. Will definitely be going back.

Just moved from Monroe NC to Santa Monica. Dreaded the idea of getting the Smog Check and CA plates on the Car. Not only is this place professional, clean, great location and quick. Ray Hodrick saved me hours at the DMV be reminding me that AAA in Santa Monica could handle the transfer at their office a few blocks away! I was out with new plates an hour later! THANK YOU!!

Great service upon arrival. Their employee greeted and directed me. The smog test took 10 minutes and each of their staff members were so professional and super friendly. I would highly recommend. The pretty brunette at the front desk and older gentleman with the tablet were people assisting me.

Wow! What a great experience. 3 days after purchasing a Rav4 from a shady, snake-like car dealership, I brought the car here for a complete used car inspection. My faith in car service people was at its lowest BUT Santa Monica Motots was incredible! Ray in particular provided thorough explanation of the service I would be getting, made notes to accomodate the extra parts of the car I wanted checked, and even asked if I had a time restraint to be mindful of. I'll say it again. Wow. Afterwards, he even walked me through the data they had collected on all Rav4s to let me know what the most common car diagnosis could be seen first on my new car. So thankful for this place's honesty and expertise. Also, the price was the cheapest I found! For sure will revisit for my car needs.

I've never been so happy with a service that is normally seen as mundane, confusing, or frustrating. Santa Monica Motors and team helped me with everything I needed for my car. First and foremost, I was greeted with the warmest hello. They were so helpful, open, and honest through my visit there. Through casually talking, they told me they also did vehicle registration there (I was moving from Texas to California, and was still confused with what all had to be done, in what order, etc.). Not only did they saved me from having to go to the DMV again (5 stars right there), but they explained the entire process from beginning to end, and made the transfer so easy. They even changed my plates for me. I can't thank them and recommend them enough!

I've been getting my smog tests done here from several years. Always great, that's why I keep going back. This visit was same as always: fast, efficient service. A nice touch was the $10 emailed coupon I received. I made an appointment but didn't really need it. Fortunately, there were no other customers there when I arrived, so I got in and out very quickly. Service was friendly and helpful. I'll go back next year for the smog check of our other car.

My experience started with a call. The person who answered the phone was professional and provided me with more than enough information so I was prepared for my visit. The gentleman that met me upon arrival was courteous, assuring, and thorough. They usually suggest you carve out 30-mins for the smog check, but my car was done within 10 minutes. The cashier that processed my payment was efficient. All in all a great experience and I will certainly be back in the future!

I don't leave many reviews, but I feel compelled to do so here given the outstanding quality of service that Santa Monica Motors consistently delivers. I've been a customer of theirs for several years, and they have always taken good care of me and my cars. There have been two separate recent instances where I have had to show up unannounced, and they have managed to fit me into their busy schedule and have service completed in the same day. They are honest, dependable, and responsive, and I highly recommend them.

I love Santa Monica Motors. I've been going here for years and they never disappoint. My last Smog Check the other day - took 20 minutes and they were so efficient. Great company, local and always deliver. I've lived in SM for over 15 years now and would never bring my car anywhere else for a Smog Check. Clean, friendly, fast and reasonable - what more could you ask for when none of us really want to have to do smog checks in the first place right? Highest recommendation possible. This is a great place to do smog certification. I have used them before. It is a great place to do smog certification during the pandemic. Lots of thought went in to how they handle you and your car with the minimum risk of exposure. On top of that, the process was fast. I highly recommend Santa Monica Motors.

Great experience. Second time going here for smog test. The guy knew who I was before I even told him why I was there. Girl on the desk was extremely friendly and helpful. Expected it to take longer than usual as it was midday when I dropped off the car. Took all of 15 minutes. Would definitely recommend. Very happy customer :)

I’ve always had a positive experience here - they’re extremely helpful in explaining the details of the service and have quoted me lower than what I’ve been quoted at a Nissan dealership (I have a Nissan). They almost always get the work done same day or next day, and have easy interfaces to provide quotes/updates to the service and they text you when you’re cars ready. In general, the staff are always so helpful and friendly. I definitely feel like I can trust Santa Monica Motors with my car. Highly recommend

Great for a Smog check. The entire process took about 15-20 minutes. They have a nice waiting area (even though I did not wait long). Employees were friendly. Environment felt sanitized and all cautions were being used for virus protection. I have been coming here for several years and I will continue to do so.

I've taken my car to Santa Monica Motors for a few years now. I've found them to be very helpful, forthright, and friendly. This last time, when I told the manager I needed to have my car before 3:30, he made sure it was available at 2:30; when he saw me waiting for a while in the waiting room (which is very comfortable), he had a driver take me home. The car came out just great and they even cleaned it without my asking. I felt really appreciative and satisfied with the service. They were also honest and straightforward about pricing.

I was looking for alternative to Dealer for servicing and realized my favorite Smog Check place also does regular car maintenance and servicing. (Also a neighbor recommended them.) Made an appointment for Oil Change and Inspection. Good updates. Don texted a list of recommended repairs (with pics of my dirty filters and brakes) and I called to confirm the work. Excellent service! Highly recommend. I stumbled upon this place for a smog check - they took me in right away, I was in and out in 15 minutes. The only problem with the speed was that I was having such a delightful conversation with Bob and would have gladly waited longer to chat with him more :) ! It’s a bit pricey at $69.95 but there was a $10 off coupon they told me about so it wasn't as bad and I prefer to support small local businesses. Definitely check them out and make sure to say hi to Bob!

I am so glad I found this place! Amongst other things my air conditioner wasn’t working and I didn’t want to spend a fortune on these fixes. I called beforehand and they were super helpful. Went in for my appointment and I was relieved that everyone was wearing a mask and there was contactless check-in. They did a great job and it was in my budget! A fabulous experience from start to finish! I believe Bob is the owner and I was greeted by him promptly almost before I could roll down the window. Within a minute or two tops someone was already over getting ready to service my vehicle. Then I was directed to go to their lounge and check in with Daisy the receptionist who completed all the necessary documents for the servicing on my car. There I meant two lovely ladies who enjoyed meeting my dog! So I might I add they are very dog friendly! You know it is rare to get customer service like this these days. While parking,the service writer approached immediately, greeted me and very politely initiated the paperwork for the smog inspection. He remembered me from the last inspection 2 years ago. The waiting lounge was very nice and clean, with ample seating and wi-fi, felt like I was in a coffee house except here, the coffee was free. All the employees were courteous. They gave me a time estimate of 30 minutes but my car was ready in about 20, which was a pleasant surprise. I have, and will continue to recommended Santa Monica Motors to others.

I was greeted right away pulled into a spot, my information was entered into a iPad, I then waited in a nice area outside under an umbrella. I was thinking for a smog check place it would be pretty generic and that the reviews were probably exaggerated. But from the moment I arrived to when I left, there was such charm and warm hospitality. The guys who took my car were like uncles and Bob at the counter was super welcoming in a humble sense. A smog check here is priced based on year and size. With the $10 off coupon from their website, my Mazda hatchback smog check was a bit over $50 with tax. Would recommend for everyone. Smog check took less than 15 minutes. You can wait in the lobby where they have free WiFi and coffee.

They evaluate problems and report back through videos and quick text descriptions so the customer understands exactly what needs to be fixed and why. I wanted to share a most pleasant experience at Santa Monica Motors yesterday. I needed a smog check and the gentleman who first assisted me was there, just as I pulled in the parking lot. In pre-covid days, there was a room to wait in with free coffee, etc, but those days are gone. Not their fault. Besides, it was a warm day, so being outside, under a big umbrella was no big deal. In fact, the smog check was completed before I had a chance to check all my emails on my phone! The gentleman brought me inside, where I paid Bob, the really nice owner who has been there for years. Everything couldn't have taken more than fifteen minutes. I highly recommend SM Motors when you need your next smog check.

My experience at Santa Monica Motors was disappointing only in regard to the price. I am still struggling to understand the amount of money paid for the services rendered, and this may cause me to look elsewhere for future needs. However, in every other way my experience here was efficient and professional. I especially appreciated the efforts they were taking to make customers feel safe regarding the pandemic; at one point a gentleman wiped down something he had handled with sanitizer before handing it back to me. If price were no object, I would certainly return.

Additionally, I was particularly impressed with all of the safety and sanitary procedures that are in place due to COVID 19. Not all businesses follow guidelines. Just got back from my car service with these guys and, although I have about 20 things I need to do in the next hour, made leaving this review a priority. They are just that good. I dealt with both Don and Ray during the middle of the day when they had several services already occupying their attention, yet they stopped what they were doing to listen to my issues and addressed them promptly (they were minor). This is my 4th time visiting this shop, and guaranteed it will not be my last. This the type of shop you continue to return to even when you move farther away. I would say this place is the gold standard for Star rated smog tests. Immediate service, plenty of room to park, and pull up. The main office is large and comfy with water, coffee, elegant chairs and side tables for reading and relaxing. Staff are really nice. I was In and out in 20 minutes. It does, however, cost a bit more than the bottom line budget garages, but I guess you get what you pay for without getting grease on your pants or dirt from sitting on a curb outside while waiting forever to get your car back. Treat yourself to an upgrade!

My experience with SMM this past week was 5 star service! I have an old car (2001 Ford Focus zx3) that I want to keep running as long as possible. It’s had an incredibly annoying vibration (the whole car vibrated) for years. I’ve taken it to several mechanics who said “oh it might be this or that” with no concrete solutions. Finally the vibration got bad enough that I decided to pay the $ to have it fixed. SMM diagnosed it very quickly and sent text messages with pictures, descriptions and a quote within a day of me dropping off “ol’ blue”. My car was fixed within two days and drives like it’s brand new! The lobby is also very nice and the employees at the desk professional and polite. Ray was very nice and helpful at explaining the process. I feel the prices were fair. I will always bring my cars to SMM from now on.

Don at Santa Monica Motors is absolutely the best! I have two Dodge vehicles and a Nissan and he has worked on them all. Each year the experience gets better now that they moved the office to the building next door - great waiting area with Keurig coffee, water and charging stations. Friendly staff and great service. I and my family have been going to Santa Monica Motors for over 20 years and through probably ten cars. They are simply the BEST auto professionals I have ever entrusted my cars to. I will continue taking my cars to them as long as they're in business. They have the best mechanics, staff, and repair people in the area, they're super professional, and they have always been completely honest and trustworthy with me. Instead of looking for the highest markup as some shops might, they have gone way out of their way to save me money by giving me good advice about repair options and suggesting alternatives to expensive repairs. One time during the holiday rush I had to have a complicated computer something or other replaced on the engine of my Lexus, and they tracked down a much less expensive discounted one for me. They worked overtime on it and by the time it was all over it cost them much more than they ended up charging me for the repair, but they got the car ready for a long holiday trip. That's the kind of business they run. I strongly recommend them.

But Don looked into it for me (without me asking him to) and discovered that the warranty for that part had been extended. He printed out the information regarding the warranty for me and sent me to the dealership where I got it replaced FOR FREE. Yes, you read that correctly. Santa Monica Motors turned down an opportunity to charge me for service and instead sent me to the dealership, saving me thousands of dollars in the process. Knowing I was having a life crisis, they expedited my repairs and got to work right away on my ancient and poorly maintained car. Their diagnosis was thorough and honest. I've been told by two major houses that my brakes needed to be replaced, but Santa Monica Motors took photos of every point of inspection and demonstrated that my brakes were perfectly well-inside the safe zone. They make sure to treat the cause of an issue, not just the symptom, and I'm not sure just how common that is these days. Let me preface this review by stating that it takes something very extreme to put "pen to paper". Santa Monica Motors did, what I thought, could not be done. I dealt with both Ray and Don, both extremely friendly, fair and helpful. Not only did they quickly ascertain why my "check engine" light was on, (something that my old mechanic could not figure out after three days but not even the Hyundai dealer could figure out), they got it to pass the smog test. All of this for an incredibly reasonable price and far, far less than the previous mechanic and dealer charged me with no results or even answers. Santa Monica Motors will now be my official mechanic for every automobile I will ever have. They turned a complete nightmare into a routine service and did it stress free. Five stars. Brought in my son's 2012 Genesis--air conditioning not working and frozen display screen. Don was very responsive in keeping me informed about diagnosis, cost and completion time. AC fix was 40% less than dealer. I can't imagine what dealer would have charged for the screen but Don and team worked with mfg. on programming fix as opposed to replacement of unit. very impressed with their work & honesty. they pointed out pressing & long term areas of the car i should keep an eye out for without trying to upsell me - a webpage of your car with photos documentation. very helpful. i asked if they could look at the repair that the dealer (Toyota of SM) had to legally make because of their mistake & SMM mechanic inspected my oil pan & documented the repair with plenty of photos of the underside of my car. my grandfather was a mechanic & i grew up fixing cars. they pointed out it was time to change my air filter, but left it up to me to change it myself ($21 Toyota OEM part) if i preferred. the dealer on the other hand tried to upsell me at $450 which is why i now bring my 3 cars here.

After years of receiving terrible, indifferent, overpriced service from Honda dealerships all over L.A., I tried out Santa Monica Motors about 10 years ago. They have never failed to perform admirably. One of Karim's mechanics once diagnosed an odd engine noise in my 1998 Honda Civic as a hidden exhaust manifold leak ... after listening to the engine for only 5 seconds. Freaky. It was like consulting the Oracle of Delphi without the incense. They have also done great work on my 2006 Honda Accord. They always follow my instructions to not overfill my oil crankcase, which is a request I could never get dealerships to honor. Just today, they replaced a blown headlight bulb, including a battery removal, in under 10 minutes. There weren't even any repair slots available today, but they squeezed this work in between other customers' appointments during a lunch hour. Just try doing that at a dealership. My only regret about posting this review is that it might make it a bit more difficult to get an appointment. :)

Don and Ray are some of the best people I have had the pleasure of working with on my car. My Acura RSX and my girlfriend's Honda Accord are old and need some tender love and care. I came in to Santa Monica Motors/Santa Monica Smog test to do a pre smog check inspection. On the phone they told me that the inspection would be $120 and then an additional $69 for the smog test (at Santa Monica Smog test, it's the same place). They also mentioned that they offer a shuttle service to take me home. They were very nice when I got there, and after giving them my information, I was told that the inspection would be just $70. Thinking I just saved $50 already made me happy. I waited about 25 minutes for the shuttle driver and got a ride to my house (also in Santa Monica). After 2 hours I received a phone call saying that there weren't any problems, they took my car through the smog test (and it passed) and the whole charge was $69. So bassicaly, they inspected the car, fixed what was neccesary (I know for sure that the idle had to be adjusted), they only charged me for the test itself, and also gave me a ride back to the shop. I couldn't possibly ask for more.

My wife and I were returning from the doc office when the little one goes ballistic. We decided to stop our car (2003 Mazda Protege 5) at some random street and lo and behold the battery dies. The AAA guys gives it a jump start and we head to our fav car mechanic shop - SM Motors......but it was past closing time and Don still allowed us in since we called in at around 4:50ish. On reaching there, for some reason, when started again, the car did fire up and Don gave us a couple of options - leave it there and get a ride or take it home and chance it. Since we had our LO with us, we decided to chance it and went home. 4 days later and on starting the car, it did fire up after initial hesitation but clearly something was wrong. Back at the shop, they find the battery had some internal shorting. They offered to replace the battery for free as it was under warranty period. The whole process was handled professionally and in a calm manner by Don. In the past, we dealt with Josh who was also equally professional and proficient. I am taking in our bimmer for oil change at much lower cost than the dealers. They do use Castrol 5W synthetic, the same as dealers. Why bother paying more? It is our go to place for all things auto related!

I cannot over-emphasize my trust and gratitude for the guys at Santa Monica Motors (SMM). For the better part of a decade, SMM has handled jobs both big and small, from regular preventative maintenance to electronics, suspension, engine, and more electronics (Jeep owners will understand) on mine and my wife's vehicles. Since a surgery a few years ago, I'm unable to do all the minor work on my Jeep that I used to do. I still do little things like replace bulbs and change my air filter. I used to hate taking my ride somewhere and being told I needed a new "whatever" that I had just changed the week before. At SMM, I have NEVER felt BS'ed or taken advantage of. If Don tells me I need something replaced, I know its time to replace it. There have been times when he's told me that he'd feel more comfortable if he kept it one more day, even though he knows how bad I need it back. I respect that they want to make sure the job is done solid, not just "the best that could be done before you want it on Thursday". You will be treated professionally and with respect. I've experienced it and I've witnessed it with other customers many times. It's kind-of cool to find that in this town. I recommend Santa Monica Motors!!!!

Great customer service shouldn't be so rare. Upate: 2 years go by, I come back for another smog check. They said it'd take 20 minutes and cost $70. It took 15 and there's free WiFi.
