We have been customers of Drake Garage for a long time. They do a great job of diagnosing the issues with your car and explaining things in good detail, especially for those of us who don’t work on cars! We never feel like we’re being taken advantaged of either and we really appreciate that! It’s great because they will be upfront and honest about what needs to be fixed right away and what can be dealt with at a later time. I recently had an issue with my car after they serviced it, but they got my car right back in asap and immediately addressed the issue. They even followed up with me to make sure everything was good to go. That sure made me a very happy customer! You can trust the people at Drake Garage to do quality work! We highly recommend them!! I always have great service at Drake Garage. They will let me know if they notice any other problems while doing maintenance on my car and tell me if how urgent the repair is. They also explain issues in an easy to understand manner and will answer any questions I have without complaint. My low tire light came on and I stopped in to get air 2 times before I was able to get an appointment. They were friendly and very helpful when I needed air and checked all the tires. When it came time to fix the tire they were frank with me about how busy they were and could not give me an exact time. I had a taxi pick me up from the station an, after a call, took me back to get my car. The cost was reasonable and they explained that there was a small slice that they were able to patch. No more problems👏

I love Drake Garage! We have used them for over 5 years for everything from oil changes to more serious repairs. Ryan and Gus are reliable, easy to work with, and very honest about what needs to be done vs. what is not an immediate concern. I never feel like they are just trying to sell me things. They have a newer interface that texts you once your vehicle has been inspected and sends you a detailed report. Plus, they are amazing at explaining everything they are doing and needs to be done for those of us who are car illiterate!

I was a little apprehensive because they don’t make appointments for a specific time but rather just have you drop the vehicle off. We don’t have a second vehicle so I had to find someplace in the neighborhood to wait for the service to get done. I dropped the vehicle off at 8:30 & it was done by 10:30. I discovered great places to wait at La Mie Bakery & The Juice Company across the street & Friedrich’s Coffee a few blocks north. It is a great locally-owned shop to get your vehicle serviced & the neighborhood has great places where you can wait for the work to get done.

Dropped off rim with flat tire on a Fri night. Gus aired up all my tires since all were low & the donut. Tire ordered. Gus called Tues new tire on rim balanced & ready to go. Stopped by Wed afternoon appointment time was there less than 15 minutes. Great customer service & very trustfull. I had been taking my car to the dealership where I bought it from, and they did a fine job, but was never overly thrilled with their service. I took my car in to Drake Garage and they treat your car like it’s their own. They have a great system that shows you what they inspected, whether it passed inspection, requires attention sometime in the future, and requires immediate attention (like my break pads and rotors in this case). They late out how much it is for parts and labor. And you can make a sound decision on what you want to do and it is all laid out in front of you. While we ended up going to another garage, for service; the experience was so great, I bought wipers and had them installed because I had to support what these guys are doing no matter how small! We went to a different shop and these guys still get 5*'s. Why is that, you ask? Because they were honest, straight forward, do good work, and guarantee that work. If I hadn't been there in a beater with a heater, I would have had the service done on the spot. They are communicative, and really know their stuff, they won't give you a bull explanation either, if they don't know for sure, they'll find out for you, and they even explain exactly how the parts work, what's wrong, and how they will fix it. This kind of honesty and transparency is unprecedented in this market. I would recommend this place to my own mother, and I would even let her go in for service alone! Of you go anywhere else; you're only hurting yourself. Save the headache if you need or care about your car. You won't be disappointed! It's no surprise to me that not only is this one of the best kept secrets on des moines, and that they are so busy. They're doing such an impressive job, and I will definitely be taking our new car here whenever it needs service.

I can't say enough good things about the crew at Drake Garage. I don't know if they are the cheapest but certainly the most honest and offer quality work. They caught things other garages did to "get by" but not fix a problem--a piece of cloth was stuck in my windshield fluid tube. Helped with the pressure but the tube was still broken. When I was a poor college student, I took my car to them because I had called my current mechanic and said the car was shaking and he said he couldn't help me. (What?!) So I took my car to them. Drake Garage called back very shortly after dropping my car off and said I needed new tires and that should stop the shaking problem. I thanked them and asked the cost. They said it was fine, have a good day. I could have cried being a college student who pinched every penny. Drake Garage also has a guarantee on their labor. I had a problem with my car and they said that this problem could be related to something that should have been done last summer with issue X but couldn't have been done with issue X otherwise issue Y wouldn't have happened. The technician that had "fixed" issue X was no longer with them. So, they did $3500!! worth of repairs on my car FOR FREE (part of their guarantee) because this thing which is related to this thing which is related to this thing MAYBE could have been related to when my car was repaired by the formerly employed technician. They could have lied and not told me but their integrity had them do what was right by their standards. When I pick up my car, they always take the time to explain the problem and even show pictures of it. They check to make sure I understand. They explain further when I don't understand. I may not understand the whole thing, and I'm sure they can tell by my face that I don't 100% understand but I appreciate that they take the time to explain what was wrong and how they fixed it. One time I needed new tires and so I asked Carl which tire he would put on his car. He said he would put Brand X on his car but Brand Y was a good tire too. I said asked again which one he would put on his car and he said Brand X but not because he was trying to upsell me. I asked what the price difference in the two tires was, he told he me the price--it was $2-$3 a tire! Upsell? Upselling in the car world is like $50-$200 more. Honest guys work here. The staff are very good at respecting my request to make my care safe but nothing else. There was even one time where they said it might be time to stop putting repair money into this vehicle. What repair shop would tell you to stop giving them a ton of business because it was time to call it quits on this car? THESE GUYS! LOVE LOVE LOVE Drake Garage!

My parents took their cars to Drake garage in the 70s when I was a kid. I took my car there as a young adult and then moved away. I’ve been going back the last few years and I still find them to be the most pleasant, accommodating, and trustworthy mechanic shop around. They’ve kept my old high mileage Lexus running like a champ with minimal repairs and excellent communication. I was spurred to write this review because on Friday evening five minutes before closing time I stopped in with a hood problem and to schedule service. I asked if I was in danger of the hood flying up Tommy-Boy-style while I’m driving, and the guy came on out front to look at it. He pulled some tools out of the garage, diagnosed the problem, made it safe for me to drive, and had me on my way in five minutes free of charge.

I've taken my car here a couple of times since moving to Des Moines a year ago. My experience has been great both times. If you're willing to show up in the early morning to drop your car off, there is a very good chance they will be able to start looking at it right away. At least, that's what happened both times I brought mine in. I was able to pick my car up the same day - once less than 90 minutes later. The people there are courteous, direct, and at no time did I ever get the impression that I was being taken for a ride. In fact, an Interstate battery they recently put in my car cost me $25 less than if I'd bought it in a store. They do not try to upsell you like chain service centers often do. They did bring up a couple of other things they found, but let me know they were not vital to be taken care of immediately rather than trying to make them sound dire. For these reasons, I will continue to return to Drake Garage for those other repairs until I have reason to do otherwise.

I'm editing my previous review due to additional information. It was explained to me that inferior parts have flooded the market, and Drake refuses to use these parts. Hence the price discrepancy between a quote given to me by another person and then another, higher one by Drake, which had lead me to believe Drake's parts were over priced. The market issue was explained to my husband. I wish it would have been explained to me. Drake has done well by us in the past with various vehicles. I don't think we've had to go back twice to have something taken care of, it's done right the first time.
