These guys are great!! Went in for a tune up and an oil change. Was expecting to be up-sold but they got me in and out in 15 minutes with just the oil change fee, which was VERY reasonably priced. My first time going, I took my car in for a second opinion on some pricey work and he immediately called out the first guy's BS. I haven't looked back since. We’re young, inexperienced, nervous car owners - basically, it’d be super easy for a mechanic to rip us off if they wanted to. Instead, on multiple occassions when we’ve brought our car to Car Zone to be checked out, the team has told us exactly what was wrong, explained why its a minor issue/not a safety concern/something that doesn’t need to be addressed, and charged us exactly $0. When we have needed service, they’ve been quick, friendly and easy to work with. I can’t say enough good things about how honest, patient and kind the Car Zone team has been. We’ll never bring the car anywhere else.

I went here because of all the excellent reviews and am so glad I did! I had ended up with a flat tire after a really bad experience at Valvoline. I called Car Zone in the morning and was able to come in that same day. I explained what had happened and what I thought the issue was. They confirmed I was right, and then took the time to actually show me the problem with the valve stem and what they did to replace and fix it. They also refilled the tire pressure in the other tires. I was in and out within half an hour, and they didn't even charge me which was incredibly kind. I will definitely be coming here in the future with any issues, and highly recommend!

I had to go in for a check up of my car for a burning smell. They told me nothing is wrong and showed me under the car that nothing is leaking. They didn't charge me anything and even refilled some of the fluids for the car. Since then I've driven about 2000 miles and the car is running good. I will definitely be coming back here again.

What can I say? I feel language doesn’t suffice to describe the BEST car maintenance I have ever had! I needed to replace my battery. When I arrived without a reservation, Murphy and his team were having lunch or something. I thought to myself, “oh, not a very good timing.” However, he promptly directed me to pull my car in the garage and started to work on my car. I waited there for my battery change and regular car maintenance. They were fast, professional, extremely pleasant to work with. Besides English, they also speak other Asian languages, such as mandarin, Thai/Lao, Malay.

Knowing a good, honest, mechanic makes life so much better. Going to Murph and his team at Car Zone has been—by far—one of my better decisions since moving to Cambridge. When I take my car to them, they instantly diagnose the problem, show me what's wrong, and tell me the best way to fix it... or whether it needs to be fixed at all. I have never once felt that I was being up-sold, and they always do the work the right way, the first time. Beyond regular check-ups and oil changes, Murph has also done major work on my car: he's replaced my brakes, my lower exhaust, and my tires. Each time, he's been a straight shooter, and the work has been excellent, reasonably priced, and fast! Some other reviewers have mentioned that they can take their car to Murph for odd problems, and he'll fix it within three minutes. I've also had this experience many times, and it's a testament to his skill, character, and people's trust in him that you can just stop by and have these problems fixed. When the day comes for me to leave Cambridge, Murph and his team will be one of the things that I'll miss the most! If you have a car and need a mechanic, do yourself a favor and take it to Murph.

Can’t express how much I trust the folks here. They’re patient and happy to explain things. So many times I’ve gone to them over the years and they’re so willing to help me check my tires or refill the air on them or check a light that went off or investigate a rattling noise under my car, doing so for no compensation at all despite my insistence. There’s a reason I guess why they’re so busy! I truly feel they try to figure out the root of my car problems and are honest with me and my options, and I’ve never felt scammed (which can be especially tough when you’re a woman). Murph is a great guy and a knowledgeable mechanic. His prices are some of the lowest I've ever seen and he will go the extra mile to make sure you're happy. He will often put the car on the lift when you arrive and look at it with you right then and there to diagnose your issue, which I love. He replaced a brake caliper of mine about a year ago, and it started making noises recently so I brought it back in. He immediately said he would warranty it without any haggling or negotiating, and without me needing to show a receipt. When it turned out to actually be an entirely different problem, he fixed it for the cost of the part alone (no labor). Ended up being $30 for a job that most mechanics would have charged several hundred for.

Hands down the best car repair experience I've ever had. Not only did Murph finish replacing my starter at at least 1 day before he said he would, he voluntarily reattached my previously glued rear view mirror that the first place I took my car to knocked off in the process of *not* working on my car for 4 days. My partner and I have been going to Car Zone for years and have probably taken our cars there about thirty times. This is literally the best mechanic you could possibly ever find. Actually, this is possibly the best business I've ever used, period. When I get my oil changed the dealership always informs me that something is wrong with my car and I'll need to pay $300-$3000 to fix it. Instead of getting my car fixed at the dealership, I take it immediately to Murph. Murph and his guys usually diagnose my car in a few hours and then give me an ACTUALLY HONEST assessment of what's wrong. I've literally taken my car to them five separate times and they told me that NOTHING WAS WRONG with my car and that my Toyota dealership was literally just lying to me. And the best part? THEY DON'T CHARGE ME ANYTHING. I sometimes drive away from Car Zone thinking, "How do these guys make money?" I trust them so much that we still bring our cars to Car Zone even though we've moved to Rhode Island. Seriously, the best family-run business you could ask for. Highly recommend!

I have been coming to Car Zone for years for my oil change. I've had 2 newer cars he would take care of for me and just recently before I went on a trip to Tennessee I asked him to check if I'm good for the drive and if he sees ANYTHING I need to touch up on. I told him I'd rather put 500 into my car than get a rental. He could have easily told me I needed to fix something within that price range but was completely honest and told me I was good to go and everything look good. This has happened twice. What a gem this place is. I started coming here just because the reviews were so phenomenal. I had been in one other time for some major ($1200) repairs, in which Murph and his team did a great job even though it was tough news to have to deal with such an expensive repair. I later came in because something was wrong with my muffler. He told me that he could replace the whole muffler system for $400+ or I could go to a muffler place he recommended to me and they could patch it for $70. A no brainer. And he asked nothing further for his time. I went to the muffler place the same day and had my car fixed in a hour. Im sure there’s a few mechanics out there who would have capitalized on my inexperience with cars and sold me the $400 fix. I will continue to come here just because I trust the guy. He knows doing right by people is good business and it seems to be working well for him.

Murph is such a great guy and the most transparent mechanic I've ever had the pleasure of working with. I came in Friday morning because my engine overheating light went on. Within 20 minutes he topped off my coolant and used the lift to check for any leaks which luckily he didn't find. And in the end, he insisted no charge!!! If you have a problem with your car, you should really send it to car zone!!!! This is the most honest mechanic place I have ever went! I have been to this place twice, they either fixed my small problem without any charge or refer us to another reliable place since they don't have the required equipment. They are very polite and professional. I went there again today because another mechanic told me my car need to have the breaks and tires replaces at a total of $1000+. However, when I drove my car, the breaks works fine and feels right. After a check, they told me there is no need to replace the breaks and the tires can still be used for some time. They told me about the exhaust leak which I did smell while driving! Again, after a thorough check, they didn't charged me a penny. They assured me this is not a huge problem and can be fixed within $200 if the broken part is cut out and replaced and they direct me to the right place to work on it. I really really appreciate their honesty! Again, if you have a car problem, take it to them, you will never regret it!!

Murph is exceptionally honest, tells you what you need, and what you don't need. He helped me avoid a scam from a state inspection and saved me $500. Murph correctly directed me to contact where I bought the car from and also the original dealership to follow up with those repairs. He also rotated my breaks to fix a loose part on the car, and didn’t charge me for anything!!! If it was anywhere else, they would have charged $200 for that! Really helpful people.

I got a call from my daughter in Boston yesterday that her new car smelled like something was burning when she drove it, she told me she didn't use it for a while and it was sitting. I live in New York so the first thing I did was look on yelp/google for a trustworthy mechanic to check it out. After reading several reviews I called Murph on the phone and told him the story. He said no problem, have her swing by and he would check it out. After inspection and a good engine cleaning with an air gun, he concluded that a squirrel had made a nest under the hood. He also said there was no damage to the wiring and she should be good to go. My daughter said he wouldn't take money for his time, and he was the nicest guy. These reviews really do make a difference and that's why I am writing this one. Thank you Murph!

Really honest and nice guys, fixed my ac/heat issue for free by knocking the cabin air filter back into place. Told me to order tires online to save a bit extra on front tire replacement. Maybe it’s my bad luck, but I know a lot of places refurbish brake rotors by sanding, a little black rattle can spray paint, and charge full price. My break rotors from Car Zone are 100% brand spanking new, no refurbishing here. Pretty happy so writing this review to help them out, but hope they can still make time for me in the future!😆

He and his team are honest and hardworking. He does not rush people to make a decision so feel free to shop around if you like, but if you want someone you can count on, he and his team are the ones. Took it here, they checked it out, and Murph called me to say that it honestly is totally fine and at it's current age and break condition there's not really any point of doing anything. I am new to the northeast and had to get some work done on my SUV. I took it to the Lexus dealership and was given an outrageous price for each suggested fix. I brought that estimate to Car Zone. They came in way under for everything they did, and told me that some of the things on there didn’t need to be done. Yeah hey were fast, honest, reasonably priced and they did quality work. I’ve been back by twice since then (small fix for mine and one for my fiance’s Car). They did the same great job. I never leave reviews, but I can’t recommend these guys a lot. They’re very polite, professional, fast, quality, honest and well-priced. Don’t even bother looking up another place, just go to Car Zone.

This is hands down the best auto mechanic in the entire city. I worked with Murph to resolve multiple dashboard lights (check engine light, airbag light) that were preventing me from passing inspections. Murph was incredibly helpful and understanding. He evaluated the car thoughtfully and with my best interest in mind. I dropped the car off with him in the morning and he called with brief updates to keep me informed and guided me through each decision we needed to make. He is incredibly trustworthy and his honesty is refreshing. I never felt like he was trying to trick me or squeeze more money out of me. He is truly an outstanding professional and he far exceeded my expectations. He went well above and beyond his duty to help me with my car and I am so grateful to have him as a mechanic. Long story short, I was able to get multiple items fixed and eventually pass inspections for a fraction (an order of magnitude lower) of the cost than what I would have had to have paid at the dealer or anywhere else. If you are having any problems with your car, I can 100% vouch that this is best auto mechanic in the city.

Murph and his team are nice. Labor fees charged is kind of reasonable (quoted $400 for front wheel hubs and bearings + driver's side axle replacement - which should take about 2 hrs). He suggested us to buy the parts ourselves to save on parts costs. (if all work including parts are done there, it would cost $260 per side for front wheel bearing and hub replacement, and $450 for driver's side front axle replacement - total of $970). Online, oem replacement parts would cost around $100-150 total. But since we're pressed on time and he said he's going to use genuine Toyota parts (or "will order them from Toyota"), we decided to let him source the parts (for $570). Few hours later, work is done. Growling noises reduced significantly, but what's disappointing is, we don't see that he's really using genuine Toyota parts. Would give 5 starts if parts used are genuine Toyota's as was promised.

Unbelievably honest and kind owner. After taking my car to two previous mechanics (and bring lied to and cheated by them! Avoid Alewife Mechanics like the plague!), I was desperate to get an honest qoute from a place that wasn't trying to make a buck by my naivete. Murph told me my car wasn't worth fixing and I should just sell or trade it in, because cost of repairs would exceed it's value. He did a thoughtful analysis and didn't charge me a dime!!! Now he has a client for life, there is no place better.

I couldn't have been happier with my experience here. I dropped off my car here one morning because my brakes were squeaking. I wasn't sure of what to expect, because I had always heard general cautionary tales of unnecessary charges by overzealous mechanics. I received a call about an hour later, and Murph explained that the brakes were fine, but they just happened to make that noise because of their brand. He gave me a few options, and after I chose not to change them, he didn't charge me for the checkup, even though I would have been happy to compensate him for his time. Amazing!

There is a reason why Car Zone gets great reviews. Murph is awesome. On multiple occasions he has saved me hundreds if not thousands of dollars. One example - my car was making weird noises - took it to a dealership and they told me my water pump was about to go and I needed to get it fixed asap and it would run me around $1,200. Took it to Murph and he told me the water pump was fine and fixed the car for a lot cheaper. It runs better than ever and 20,000 miles later no problems with the water pump. I won't take my car anywhere else.

Came to Car zone yesterday because I was having an issue with a tire. I thought it very well might be defective and need to be replaced. The guys over at car zone found a nail in the tire, told me it could be patched instead of replaced. Whole process took 10 minutes. Then when I went to pay they told me there was no charge. I was shocked, as i understadn they are a business and was expecting to be charged, but was (obviously) extremely pleased. I have only had good experiences with Car Zone. Murph is very straightforward and honest. When he diagnosis your car, he tells you everything he finds that requires repair. Unlike many other mechanics, what he also does is tell you honestly what needs to be fixed right away, what can wait, and even if something is "broken" sort of cosmetically or superficially, but poses no real safety concerns while driving. This is HUGE! So often mechanics are out to empty your bank account at any cost, telling you EVERYTHING is wrong with your car. Murph is not in the business of robbing his customers. He runs his business in a professional manner and you can count on him for honest answers, reasonable prices, and good auto mechanic work.

My dealership told me my brakes were stuck so the brake housing needed to be replaced and the pads were low. They gave me an estimate of $500-800 for the repair. It seemed odd because the previous owner told me they were recently changed. I had the experts at Car Zone look at it because of their great reviews and they told me my breaks were practically new. I've been going to the dealership for "required service" service for about 2 years now and every time it's $300-500. It shouldn't be so much every time you need an oil change. Car Zone charged me a tenth the price and assured me nothing additional was needed. I'm so grateful they saved me ~$1000 on my first visit and will only take my cars to them from now on.

Murph was excellent in dealing with my situation. Very honest and genuine. Brought my '98 Jeep Cherokee in to have the AC looked at, it had been in and out, and to have a leak in my rear differential fixed. Called and said leak is fixed for $20 and AC was serviced and running well for $150, $170 total, not bad. The issue was I went home and the AC was not fixed. I called Murph back and brought it in again. Picked it up assuming it was fixed, it was not. I called back a second time and he took a further look. Discovered it was an electrical short in my compressor. Offered to put one in from the shop for $550, but suggested to find one online and he would install it at NO further cost to me (honest guy!) I proceeded to ask if I did nothing what would happen, and he said he would re-imburse me the $150 original AC cost. That is a stand-up mechanic in my book. I've travelled and lived in many different spots and have had to take my car in to a bunch of places, and usually get taken for a ride becuase I'm not from the area. Murph was excellent, treated me as a friend, not as a potential huge profit for him. I really appreciated his help and honesty and I recommend his shop and services to anyone!

Can I give them more than five stars? I have taken two different cars to Car Zone and they have been incredibly professional, polite and efficient every time. For small tasks, they don't even charge! Who does that? For larger jobs, they will give you a fair quote. For a mirror issue the dealership wanted over $500 for, they charged around 250. If your repair will take a short amount of time, you can wait across the street in the Dunkin Donuts. Will be returning here for all repairs in the future.

Went to this shop after reading all the good reviews. Friendly staff, ran checks on my car for free. Compression test, checked spark plugs, checked coil pack. They weren’t able to do a smoke test to check for a vacuum leak, but at least I know that my engine is healthy. The original issue was a check engine light with a car too lean error code. **January 20, 2023** Car zone is now (at least for the moment) Zone Kar Inc. at 166 Boston Ave in Somerville. Murph was pretty unceremoniously booted from the Columbia Street address (1 week warning!) and after foot dragging from a potential new property further west, he’s reopened on route 16 (at Boston Ave) in Somerville. This location is a 2 minute walk from Whole Foods, Starbucks, and about 10 minutes from the West Medford commuter rail stop. Near the 80 and 94 bus lines. Phone number is the same. June 2022- 1 have gone to Car zone consistently for years (save for brief times my car maintenance was covered by a dealership—and even then, it was a headache to deal with that “free” maintenance given the wait times and bad communication I had to put up with). Once went in for a weird noise and murph hopped in for a drive around the block, told me not to worry about the noise (normal for the make and age of my car) and spent the return trip helping me narrow down a list of models to consider for my next car. Super valuable advice and I got my new car just a short time later. No charge!
