Reviews of Central Camera Company
I Was visiting Chicago and needed some film for another trip since film in my home country is so expensive. They have pretty much everything you want for Film Photography and photography equipment in general, they have a enormous collection of film stocks you can purchase and some stocks are more cheap than usual! If you live here in Chicago it is better than buying Online because of the film prices.
I Bought some B&W Film and a Battery for my Nikon FM10. Had a great talk with the employees that are so friendly! They even showed me their own photography works and i had a one of a lifetime conversation with a girl that works there, they are amazing at what they do. I Also wanted to buy a Nikon Lens but it was too expensive for what it was. Some Items may be more expensive than what you expect, even used ones but considering they offer everything and are in the city center i can't complain :)
Decent shop with decent people. Stopped here for a battery and it turns out my camera was broken. Al and other shop associates were very friendly. The stick selection is solid and they have a variety of film and camera for purchase.
I left the shop with 2 rolls of film! I’ll be back for sure.
This place was super cool for someone who came for the first time. There was lots of cameras and film available. Everyone seemed very knowledgeable about film cameras and such. I only came as a quick stop to grab a 5 pack of film since it’s so hard to find any in my home town. Buying a pack is definitely worth it over buying individual rolls. They also gave me a free pin :) would love to come again
Went in today for a roll or 2 of film. Was pleasantly surprised by the large variety of not just 35 but 120 film. There's something about all those packs of film stacked so neatly that online stores cannot compete with, I even paid the same price for film! . Not to mention you can walk out of that store and shoot an awesome photo in any direction you face. What a nice location and kind employee's.
5 stars for the massive in-store film selection and for being an old-school camera store sticking it out through the rise of digital photography. However, they're still very strict on wearing a mask, which would be fine if it were complimented with friendly customer service. Instead you get wide-eyed employees staring from over a mask, not speaking quite loudly enough to be consistently audible. While polite, it's not very welcoming. All used gear are behind the counter, the same counter people stand at to pay, so trying to just look without needing assistance is difficult. However, the receipts were old school written copies which I enjoyed. Overall I'd visit again, even if just to keep them in business.
Great Shop with everything you could need to get going with a film camera. 5 stars for selection and staff BUT please price check them and negotiate. They do have a tendency to sell $50-100 dollar camera bodies for $200-$300
The staff I talked to was really friendly and helpful. He explained the differences amongst some black and white film brands patiently, he also showed me a really cool m mount lens. I had fun visiting
I'm so happy and full of joy that this place is still open. I've been coming here since I was a teenager for my photography Class materials. Service is always top on of the line. I guarantee if you have no experience whatsoever and any photography field. You will walk out learning something.
Brilliant store excellent prices staff so knowledgeable and helpful. Shame i got there about 20 minutes before they closed i could have spent ages in there. That said they stayed open after their closing time to help me out. Highly recommend for anyone who is looking for something special at a good price
The oldest and the greatest camera company in Chicago. While it’s moved a few doors down, it’s still just as good. Worth a visit for any gear head or photographer if you are in the area… especially if you need something rare.
My film prints are usually ready in about two weeks. The women working the registers are nice, but the other people working the pickups have no customer service skills. I've had friends also mention that when they come here they feel intimated and not welcomed. They should probably work on that and they probably won't.
Historic camera shop in downtown chicago, in fact it may be the oldest in North America. Very cool to visit and the prices are competitive. If you go make sure to grab a roll of well kept vintage film or get your photos developed even!
The store is great for film and vintage shooters, not do much if you are into new technology, also is a little disorder and prices are high even for used gear.
went to purchase some portra 400 and got a roll of fujifilm 400 developed which took about 2 weeks but definitely worth the wait!! will be my go to for film devlopement!
If you want to step back in time Central Camera
is a great place to visit. Located under the L train tracks on Wabash. It’s been in business over a hundred years. They carry Nikon, Leica plus many other lines. The customer service is outstanding! Walk up Wabash it’s a prefect area to get some great pictures of Jewelers Row.
Oh my gosh, this was the best experience of my photography life, visiting Central Camera and getting to know owner Don Flesch. He's a charming and incredibly knowledgeable guy, and the store is so charming and old school.
Don helped me test-drive the Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 EX lens I bought, gave me all the specific technical details I needed, and was an absolute joy to speak with. I will return the next time I'm in Chicago and give Central Camera all my business in the future.
Great little store full of unique old gear. I really enjoyed looking around the shop. Most of the stuff was in open packages or not packaged at all which led me to wonder if the items were new or used. The items were extrememly over priced. The sold me a cheap XIT CPF for $60. That same filter would have sold for under $15 anywhere else (amazon, b&h photo, etc..). Still bought it as i was going to the aquarium and needed it at that moment so it was purchased with open eyes. The staff was great. Very pleasant and friendly.
Good stock and just about the only photo equipment store in Chicago, but the hours of operation are God-awful and make little-to-no sense, making chances of being Downtown while it's open quite slim, which is rather frustrating. When I was in school I was almost never able to make it during business hours.
Chicago's oldest camera shop since 1899! A photographer's dream and playground! New location is right next door to original location on Wabash. The staff at Central Camera are phenomenal! Especially Al, who took his time to teach me about my incredible vintage Kodak! Great people, great environment, and worth every penny! I can't say enough wonderful things about Central Camera, it's owner and staff. MUST SEE when you visit Chicago!
Beloved Chicago camera shop, for a good reason. Friendly staff. Eclectic mix of gear.
More than just an average camera store. Expert attention and all details of camera repair and Camera purchasing. friendly staff and excellent customer service.
During 7 days staying in Chicago for fantastic Chicago Marathon, I'd visited this store two times. After the owner's exquisite detail, I bought a vintage Olympus 35 RC. It's great.
I bought a decent tripod here that's held up in all kinds of weather. The sales person was very helpful and set it up for me to check out. This store seems to have more obscure items, which is not common in a brick-and-mortar store, and the customer service is good. And the sign outside is the best.
Super knowledgeable staff and great selection.
Outstanding classic camera store. They also do media conversions to digital. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Great prices too.
Super friendly, lots of cool stuff, couldn't leave without buying something. 😁 …
This is home for the visual, it’s the life’s blood of all filmmakers and equipment from yesterday to the present and future yes thank you Central Camera Company .
Whether you're new to photography or a seasoned veteran, you'll love this place. They've been around since 1899, so they clearly know what they're doing. The staff is super knowledgeable, friendly, and always willing to answer beginner-type questions, so don't be afraid to ask them anything.

Awesome and helpful service. The store is very old and has new items as well as vintage. We went there to buy film and had fun looking around too.
One of the most beautiful, historical, iconic shop of Chicago. A paradise for photographers where to find literally everything for cameras. Staff always kind and extremely expert.
I’m from out of town. I forgot my V ND. I visited CCC. They had what I needed and I also got a couple disposable cameras. Cool place. Primitive check out process. But I would visit again.
This is one of the largest collections of new and used photography equipment I have ever seen even though the store is tiny the selection is huge, the staff is knowledgeable and the prices are comparable with online retailers would definitely recommend
Incredible Camera store with literally anything you could desire. The amount of old school camera's and vast knowledge is impressive. One of the last of it's kind. Beautiful old sign and amazing staff.
One of my favorite places in Chicago. Definitely a great spot for anything vintage photography gear and film photography. Don, the owner, is the kindest man and very helpful. Always a friendly staff too.
Don and Logan gave me fantastic customer service. They were willing to work with me and stay after hours to provide me with a camera and film while passing through Chicago. Unfortunately the camera I bought ended up needing service which was no ones fault but they made sure to stand by their warranty and take care of me. I am extremely happy with them and will be doing business with them in the future. Thank you Central Camera.
Fantastic store for photographers. This retro shop is a gem in the heart of downtown Chicago. You can find new and used equipment here too at reasonable prices. Their customer service is superb, no wonder they've been in business for so long. The only downside is that this place closes at 5:30pm normally so it's difficult to find time to go here during the workweek for me.
The nicer shop owner I've never met. He quickly found the camera filter we were looking for, but on top of that, since he noticed we were tourists, he offered indications to move around, recommended some places to eat and explained the rich history of his shop, all very kind and polite of him. Highly recommended!
A plethora of film choices. Good location.
I love going here! The people are very knowledgeable and they have great customer service! They have a great selection of film! They even have film for old Polaroid cameras (Through the impossible project)! I have gotten several things repaired here. While they will never be as perfect as brand-new, they are able to work just as well. I love the student discount that they offer!
Overall, It is a great experience shopping here!
Don is the man! Got me the sensor cleaning kit I needed and gave me great advice for dinner. Prices looked reasonable for the used gear and I was certainly use them again.
Seriously, they were cheaper than Amazon and had WAY more personality!
Go there!
Charming store that is remarkably outdated! Up to 8 weeks to get a roll developed with no option to get a Dropbox link of any scans. Wow!
This is my new favorite brick & mortar photo store. I shopped at Calumet Photo in the past, but they and many others have closed. Central Camera has knowledgeable staff, fair prices, and they're happy to have you come in and play with equipment to really get a feel for it before buying. Places like this are rapidly being replaced by chains like Best Buy where you can purchase equipment, but no one knows anything about what they're selling you. If you're looking for an old-school, take your time, try before you buy experience, with people who know what they're doing, you'll love it. And in the heart of the loop, the location is super convenient.
First time developing film and scanning at this location and I'm pretty disappointed. The scans were poor quality, and the negatives were covered in dust leaving white spots all over the images. It also took a month to develop my film.
I'm a tad lukewarm about this store. I visited recently because I want to support more local & small businesses. However, I was disappointed at what it cost me once I left. I wish they were more competitive. I spent $80 on various replacement parts for my DSLR (mostly plastic parts) when it would have cost me $30 for the same items had I purchased them online (non-Amazon). I knew this before walking in the store, so I'm not complaining. I wanted them to have the business/money. But it's such a shame because I know I'll probably never go back. I'll just order what I need from an online retailer.
The staff are great but make sure that you ask for full clarity when having film developed. I was charged the same amount for having my film placed on a USB as I would have been for having them printed. When I was placing my order I was told that the amount would be less but they refused to give me a price estimate for how much my total would be. I was moving and on a tight time schedule so I moved forward when I should have just left.
Also my suggestion is to bring your own USB because they not only charge you for the usb (reasonable) but they also have an additional fee for placing the items on said USB which is ridiculous.
They also charge me for a disposable camera which ended up being empty and refused to waive the charge when I asked. Wack.
Ask for every bit of information upfront to avoid being surprised at check out and expect unnecessary charges.
Going to Central Camera was overwhelmingly exciting experience, My first time going I was taken aback by how much photography equipment they actually had.I recently started printing on their in House darkroom paper and I love how the prints come out and I'll of the pearl finish they have. They have great deals are prices and I definitely recommend going there. Keep up the good work Central Camera!
Everyone who works here is so friendly and helpful, not to mention they have anything you could want.
I could on for a long time about why I love this place. The people here are so helpful. I recently bought an old film camera to try and stray from my DSLR, the thing was I didn't know how to use it. I've wanted to come to this place for years and finally got the chance too. They helped me become more accustomed to my equipment and found the original manual for my model. I met Don, (what a sweetheart) and he gave me a Polaroid of my family. Best experience by far. I'll be coming back as soon as I'm back in Chicago.❤️
CC tries to provide a special experience. In some ways, that effort falls flat. In other ways, it succeeds.
I'll start with the bad: The gloves, the chocolates- they're superficial and gimmicky. For me, it adds nothing to the camera store experience. Even if I did like it, I can't see how it would justify the significant price difference vs. almost any alternative.
The prices are absurd for what you're getting. Depending on the film in question, pricing per-roll is 15-100% higher than anywhere else. Then there's the lack of refridgeration for film and printing papers. If their prices were competitive, I wouldn't care about that. However, if you're going to try to charge $30 for a 3-pack of Superia, it had better be cared for in a way that justifies the 80% markup over CVS.
CC redeems itself through its heritage and its friendly staff. Good luck finding another camera store that's 120 years old, still in its original family, and has managed to survive a fire. There is undeniable significance to that. That significance can be felt the moment you walk through the door, even if that feeling is diminished when you get heckled into taking some gloves and chocolates you don't want.
Side note- I can't fault them for slow turnaround on film development. They aren't a film lab, nor do they bill themselves as one. If you give CC a roll of film to develop, you either know what you're getting into, or you're getting what you deserve for not doing your homework.
If you're looking for a unique experience, and don't mind paying a significant markup for it, check out CC. There are many objectively better camera shops out there, and many cheaper ones as well, but that's missing the point. CC is unique, and that commands a markup. I just wish they'd cut out the gimmicks, and stick to the things that make them genuinely special.
Very knowledgeable staff. I'd always done film photography via Walgreens or by mail so it was my first time there and the kids they have working there were very helpful to me in finding what I needed to start my home darkroom. Prices are about as reasonable as you could possibly expect for a brick-and-mortar store specializing in a struggling industry such as film photography. They're the only real game left in town keeping the tech alive as a full-service store and they do a darn good job at it. There's good reason they've been in business since 1899. Be sure to give them your patronage. Highly recommended!
I read reviews of customers who were really upset with the customer service, but I came in on a Friday and every single staff member greeted me as I walked back through the store. I had two separate interactions, and made a purchase each time. From the other reviews it looks like I spoke with Greg who was very helpful and knowledgeable.
The selection seemed to be very good, though the store is long and narrow with the lenses behind the counter and accessories everywhere, so I personally found it difficult to browse. I wasn't quite sure where to look, there was so much stuff! There is a lot of selection in a small space.
Overall I'm happy that I came by and will be back again.
Central Camera is absolutely fantastic! A camera/film enthusiasts dream. All staff members are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Always doing their best to aid you.
I no longer live in Chicago, as I now live in Los Angeles. I had flown in for vacation. Came by to develop some rolls of film. Tim helped me through the process and ensured that I got my prints. Great guy!
Central Camera is a product of an era that unfortunately, no longer exists. It has somehow managed to survive 100 years. I hope it stays for another.
Great people, great prices, great place! I fully recommend that you at least stop by and keep the place alive.
Just the best camera place around! I stopped in today to see if 2 lenses I found are operable-- got them looked at AND got a free scarf & winter gloves and some peppermints along with great conversation with Don! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
Far superior to any other camera shop that I have so far encountered. Staff was very knowledgeable, courteous and willing to chat. They had everything I needed for my analog endeavors and were very willing to order in. I will continue to drive 2 hours to give them my business!
From the front, I want sure what to expect! I thought it was a hole in the wall shop and I was hoping they would have a memory card!
I sure was shocked when I opened the door and was greeted with an amazing selection of everything from old to new. Do you need a roll of film or an SD card? And items much older...
The service here was amazing and they had such great knowledge!
Awesome place with lots of history behind it. If you're looking for old cameras or people who are extremely knowledgeable about cameras, especially film ones, this is the place to do. The decor of the place really takes you back in time and so do the people.
They sell all types of film and darkroom materials, they also offer film developing services as well. So if you're looking to get into film, this is a great place to start.
If you're a camera buff, you have to check out this place if you're in the area. It'll be worth your time.
Hands down some of the best service we have had in chicago. We bought a new camera and the price was really good - so good it beats any price back home including exchange rate! John and the team were super helpful and we are so happy they could help us after our camera died yesterday! Old school charm. Definitely worth a visit!
The owner and staff was super friendly! They taught me how to handle the camera and what type of cameras I should get! I'm def coming back to develope my photos and get more film :)
I’m an experienced amateur, and don’t really know people personally who are super knowledgeable about cameras, so I needed some help. After countless hours of research online, I decided to go in and get some advice as to what new camera I should buy. John at the counter very patiently questioned me about my interests and methods, and helped me arrive at a really smart conclusion. The camera and lens I bought were the same price as I could have gotten online, and the advice I received was incredibly valuable. That in-person guidance and hands-on testing make me very grateful to have this shop in town.
The place is jam packed with items and knowledgable employees you can tell they have a great appreciation for what they do.
Mixed bag: the shop itself is amazing, beautiful displays, new old stock over 60 years old, tons of second hand goodies. I could lost in the history and the old equipment for days. But every time I've been there they just didn't have what I was looking for.
So phone ahead if you're looking for something specific, but go see the shop anyway, because it's any photographer's dream.
Iconic classic camera store run by three-generation family business - the Flesch family. Still the best in Chicago for great info and selection and service. Have purchased tens of thousands of dollars worth of cameras and supplies there over the years.
Flew in from Chicago for an event in the DMV. This was our first time working with Central Camera Company and they were awesome! Kyle, their rental manager was beyond accommodating and we would definitely work with them again! Great experience.
Smaller camera store but ran by really nice people. they wanted to make sure we were attended to and there was a huge line to drop off processing. they also had a lot of film in stock
New, old & hard to find equipment, with top shelf service from friendly, knowledgeable staff. More than a great camera shop. One of my favorite stores period.
I love visiting this store. The staff is all very helpful and knowledgeable. They have tons of options for all kinds of camera models. Even if you aren't planning on making any camera purchases soon, I recommend visiting the store to see all the stuff they have in stock.
Central Camera has an amazing staff, they’re super friendly and helpful!!
they also have a great variety of products and very good prices. highly recommended :)
The individuals working in this store are why we need to continue to support brick and mortar stores. They have a wealth of knowledge that you can't get by watching youtube videos and reading reviews. They are also very kind and helpful. As a person of color, I often go into spaces and feel that I'm talked down to or ignored, not here! I feel that I got the same service as everybody else, and it was impeccable. You will pay a little more than you would if you bought products online, but you get what you pay for! You will get a top notch experience here. This isnt a store full of teenagers selling you products. This are photographers who know their stuff! My friend recommended this place to me, and I am eternally grateful. Go by and say hi to Don and Dan!
Huge selection of film and development equipment, used cameras, and knowledgeable staff. A relic of the past that the modern photography supply stores can't emulate. The place is more than 100 years old, and is definitely worth the trip.
It busy, but the people are friendly and knowledgeable. I got film copied to CD and was quickly attended to both times. Glad ai now have those memories
Knowledgeable staff that will help with questions. I purchased a sensor cleaning kit for my mirrorless interchangeable lens camera and the guy helped me pick the correct kit for my sensor size and explained how to use it. You'll definitely need some help finding what you're after, since the store is small and relatively cluttered.
I can only assume people walk in to this store with the idea that it's built to serve the ever growing impatience of people today. It's a historic business and for anyone who still shoots film or still appreciates the romanticism of picture taking, this place is fantastic. I moved to Chicago recently and went in to buy a few rolls of film. I talked to Tim who works there for a good hour before making a purchase about general photography and the camera I brought with me. He checked me out by hand writing down the total for the film I bought and did the math by hand. If you expect a quick stop shop then maybe this is the wrong store for you. If you appreciate how businesses used to be and have the patience and appreciation for not only the equipment but the heritage of the establishment this is an amazing place to visit.
Cool shop for camera enthusiasts. They have basic supplies for casual photographers, to more proffessional equipment. They also have a pretty wide assortment of vintage cameras if you're interested in collecting.
Photo paper selection isn't great and overpriced. Plus they always try to sell you their branded paper which is awful. I used it once for a project that I needed to look like cheaply printed photos. Their paper worked well for that... I would only give them 2 stars but they get an extra star because I love their vintage feel.
This place seemed neat and I was glad it was there because my wife and I forgot her extra camera battery and the cord to the charger. But, $40 for a generic charger and $45 for a generic battery was a bit steep. Same items on Amazon as a combo for $12. I expected markup plus Chicago prices but $85 for $12 worth of stuff is a bit much.
Good folks.
Am getting back into b&w processing - Jenny and Charles were patient with this old man.
Charles’ Dad used to wait on me!
Mr. Flesch runs a good, knowledgeable store.
If service seems slow some days - a lot of folks come in to pick staff brains on new, used and “I’m thinking about getting into...” questions.
To me - THAT is why I would visit this great brick and mortar store.
Decent lab services - but not in house.
If there is any film type or format - they have it.
They sell to downtown pros, nearby colleges and their students.
Plus a lot of tourists!
Full disclosure, I've only been in Central Camera twice and the most recent time was at least three years ago, so take my review with a grain of salt.
The first time I went, I was in the mood to do some street photography and was browsing for film. Despite the fact that I wasn't going to spend any more than $20 or so, the man behind the counter (it was an older gentleman, don't remember his name) talked to me at length about different film stocks, explaining the pros and cons of each and detailing the purposes to which each were best suited. He was very relaxed in his attitude, never talked down to me or tried to sell me anything I didn't want, and never made me feel like I was wasting his time. I settled on a roll of Fuji Neopan 400 and Fuji Velvia 50. Of course they cost more than what one would pay online for them, but online stores don't have as much overhead to account for, and anyway it was only a dollar or two for each roll; adding in shipping, I probably would have paid the same for the same order online.
The second time, I was looking for a spot meter. A different person helped me this time, but was equally as attentive. They only had one model of spot meter in the store, which was surprising to me given that light meters are such a necessity for analogue photography, but it was in perfect working shape. I still use it to this day. It cost a little over $200. If I looked really hard, I might be able to find a better deal online, but I probably wouldn't save more than $50, and the peace of mind of being able to hold the meter in my hand and test it out before buying it was worth the extra money for me.
I'm currently looking for a medium format setup and might stop in to Central Camera next time I'm downtown to see if I can find anything to that purpose. If nothing else, for a vintage camera enthusiast like myself, it's amazing to be able to stand surrounded by all that classic film gear from decades past. Great atmosphere.
I shop here 2-3 times a month for the past year. Staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. Never has staff been rude to me which others complain about. Film here is cheaper than other places. Chems are very slightly more expensive. Great camera and lense selection.
First visit to Chicago and I badly underestimated how much black and white film I would use photographing all the buildings and other sights.
What a relief to find a camera shop only three blocks from where I was staying and what a joy to enter the store with pleasant and helpful staff and an astonishingly extensive range of films which I would struggle to match in any store near me in the UK.
The icing on the cake was to find they stocked my favorite European film
which I can only get via the internet at home.
Thank you Central Camera Company for being there for me in my hour of need
A true Chicago landmark. Central camera has been in business since 1899, and at the current location since 1929. The staff are all photo guys with centuries of photographic knowledge between them. The store is NOTHING like B&H in New York. Although they do a GREAT job with digital photography, from enthusiast to pro, the thing they do better than anyone is supporting film photographers, with products ranging from vintage gear to all the film and darkroom supplies you will ever need.
Thank goodness there's still an intelligent group of photography people in the city! My experience with the service dept wasn't great (cranky guy upstairs & impression was they send out to who-knows-who?), the staff downstairs is VERY helpful. Sometimes you just need hands-on!
Ha! I'm getting a big kick out of all these bad reviews. Go to best buy, or Calumet- where you can have a nice, sterile experience. This store is a photographer's store. The guy's are great. I've been going there for years, and will continue until one of are gone. I've never seen the staff treat anyone poorly. A little sarcastic sometimes- but so what? Get over yourself.
The best place for all things camera related in Chicago!
By far the coolest camera store I have ever been to. The employees were very patient explaining particular products and recommending solutions for my problems. I will definitely be coming back to Chicago just to visit this store again!
I don't think there is a better camera store in the Chicagoland area, Central has pretty much anything you could need. I really trust their employees with my camera and my photos. I buy all my film here, and get it developed here too!
Very happy with my Tessina camera and accessories purchase. Wonderful collection and was priced very reasonably. Exactly as described and fast shipping. Will definitely recommend Central Camera. Thank you.
A wonderful store. A neophyte coming into the shop will get good help and find what he/she needs. And a seasoned pro will be well served too. You can get the newest digital photo equipment or sheet film for the view camera you bought 50 years ago ( I use one of these). Whether you need a roll of film or a digital memory card they will have it.
Even if you don't need a thing it's worth stopping by there to look at the older equipment on display or for sale. You'll see your grandfather's bellows camera or that Hasselblad you wish you hadn't sold.
Ive been here twice and each time I have had great service. My recent visit I was getting film for a polaroid land camera and Tim helped me clean it up and showed me how to operate it as well. Super helpful guy. Will come back again.
The customer service was amazing. I went in thinking my camera was broken. It wasn't. There was a part that was dirty. Don cleaned it and then gave me a lesson on how to operate my camera which took 40 minutes. Didn't charge me a dime. Even offered me a chocolate chip muffin. Great experience.
The guys that own the place are very knowledgeable about the things they sell, because they are actually interested in the things they sell. Sometimes if you're lucky you'll get a cookie from the staff!
They have lots of cameras, lots of little accessories (some are second hand), and lots of film (though it can be pretty pricy). They also develop film, which I have not done with them (yet).
When you try to sell them equipment, they inspect the hell out of it. To those who are dying to make money off of dinky gear they don't use, this can be a negative, but to me it's a positive because it shows how much they care about what it is they buy and sell. They are very unlikely to buy a broken camera. You have the opportunity to hold and operate the gear you wish to buy.
Great little camera store with helpful staff and a great selection
A wide range of old cameras and camera gear. Prices on items vary from reasonable to ridiculously overpriced. I was sold a $10 polarizing filter (google/amazon/B&H pricing) for $68. I understand spending a few extra bucks to keep the brick and mortar places alive, but that markup is highway robbery! I settled for keeping the filter for a negotiated lower price. Next time, I will do research before buying.
120 year old shop located right in the downtown of chicago. Staffs are resourceful and friendly. They have every camera-related items you couldve asked for, you just need to prepare the money to pay for it. Reasonable price and easy access.
You can probably shop for camera or camera gear from anywhere in the world on your phone or computer however visiting central camera will give you a different experience. They can give you insight into cameras and the process more so than the internet can. They have helped me with many projects, gear and other products including repairs. If you are curious about how to use equipment or which equipment you need for a particular project skip the internet and go straight to central camera. Ask for John he's the best.
Central Camera has been nothing but helpful in teaching me a ton about the production process and provide me with the filming equipment to make my films the absolute best they can be! Plus everyone who works there is crazy nice and fun to be around!
My first time going to Central Camera was a great experience! My canon UV filter lens were broken due to my clumsiness that it shattered and worst part about it was that it was stuck; believe me, i seriously have no experience or know whatsoever how to change a filter. I went to the repair area and repair guy took out the stuck shattered filter and put in the new filter one with no charge!! These people really know what they're doing! The guy taught me some camera101 basic repairs! Amazing people! Come here!
Love this place! (1) I love supporting a local, small shop and (2) they are the best place (probably only place now) to go to in the city of Chicago for film, film gear, darkroom equipment and so forth. Their customer service is great and they always are very kind, helpful!
The guys at the counter definitely know their stuff. I wish their pricing was more competitive, but what this store lacks in pricing it makes up for with an experienced staff and a pretty wide array of camera equipment suitable for any photographer from the novice to the professional.
If you like analog photography and you're in Chicago, that's your place. You'll find whatever you need or want. Film cameras, roll films, Polaroid cameras... Also, workers were really nice and helpful. 100% recommended!
As someone new to film I was nervous to stop in here. They were very nice. One younger man helped me pick out film and gave advice while I dropped off film for development. I told the older man I accidentally wound my film and wasted 30 exposures and he gave me a free roll.
Every time I go in there that short browned hair girl behind the Kodak counter is so rude. She's always on her phone and when she finally notices I'm there she asks "Can I help you?" In a very rude tone. One time I forgot my ticket slip, and she rolled her eyes and reluctantly asked when I dropped it off. The other woman and girl who's sometimes there are a lot nicer and I understand it gets busy, but I feel like I'm a nuisance when I talk to her.
I use this as my one stop shop spot for questions or gear. The last time I was in asking for a battery replacement I recieved rude remarks from staff. The woman helping was obviously new and very kind. She got me my battery I needed no problem. When I asked about a certain grip, she was unsure if it was instock and asked a co worker. This co worker said very loudly "if they come down here and look in the case they can see if we have it or not." Not only was this rude but equally agressive. I may not be the most knowledgeable but when I bring my business consistently enough, nothing is worse than being talked down too. Step it up central.
If you need it they have it.
I'm an old-timey photog - not because I'm old, but because I still appreciate medium and large format film. Until recently I could still not match the quality of film with digital. That all changed when I bought my Nikon D850, which is a match for my high res 35mm film and my medium format 6 x 7.
With Central Camera you can get what you need regardless of where on the spectrum you fall - consumer and pro digital, student, art or pro film. They have film cameras and supplies, digital supplies, digital cameras, both new and used, a great selection of lenses for both and decent advice.
Bottom line is if you need it, they have it.
It is one of my favorite photography shops in the loop of the city of Chicago, IL. It is sad to see and hear the photography store was set on fire during the riot. Lost a lot of camera equipment during the fire.
Travelled from Lisbon to find my perfect M6 Leica Camera. Staff was helpful and gave me a few films to start me up. Stuff was fun and extremely helpful. Would recommend. Definitely returning to pick up more gear and information. Thank you.
One of the few surviving camera stores. Naturally all staff is very knowledgeable.
Since there many antique cameras and accessories in the showcases, you feel like in a different world, nostalgic.
Yes, it seems like a museum. I bought a hard to find used lens, an act of faith because the camera was in New York. Good advice. Good price. When I it on the camera a week later, all was OK. May the photo Gods keep and protect this place.
Please update hours. Not convenient at all but overall cool place.
Was looking for a good walk around lens for my Canon DSLR and the man that helped me was extremely friendly and knowledgable. The store is also a treasure trove of vintage camera, lens, and gear. Charming shop.
Everything for cameras. Film and digital plus new and old cameras. Studio gear, enlargers, film processing. Hard to find stuff plus used stuff in great shape. Also cleaning of lenses and cameras and much much more. You have to visit the store yourself.
We enjoy visiting here just to see the cameras on display in the window. It's also one of the few places you can have your camera serviced the old fashioned way without having to mail it somewhere. Highly recommend them for that!
Got my first camera here!
The staff is awesome, and gave me helpful tips with kindness and passion. I'm definitely coming back!
This is a gem of a photography store, tucked in the middle of Chicago’s downtown area. It’s a 3rd generation owned store and it’s owner is there to assist you...not an usual service these days. It is pricier than online stores but the in-person advise is worth the extra $
More expensive than ordering online, cater to college stidents. Good for acquiring film and photo paper the sameday, but make sure you have an extra 15-20 minutes while they hand write the receipt out for you.
John helped my girlfriend and I pick out an SLR; amazingly helpful and knowledgeable. Expect to pay a slight premium over online prices, but do so knowing you're supporting an old classic Chicago camera shop.
Kind people. Has a decent selection of vintage lenses. A bit pricey. If youre not looking for the absolute best deal, and enjoy talking shop, this is a decent place.
I needed to get a non-american passport photo (50mm x 70mm) done, and I couldn't find anywhere that does it. So I popped into this store and asked, and even though they didn't officially do it, they were able to take an oversize american passport photo, and cut it to the dimensions I needed. They were great and helpful!
This is the only camera company that still does film. I walked in with my Sony A7rIII and they looked at it like it was from Mars. I have to say that 50 percent of the people that go here are film users. You will find older cameras here.
I personally love Central Camera.
I bought so many things there, cameras, lenses, filters, binoculars.
A tradicional family business for 100 years.
They really do have everything you need here. They are also so well versed in cameras that I was astounded. Pricing is a little high for some stuff but you can't beat the service and shear volume of knowledge and stuff in the store.
I only came here for black & white film and 8x10 paper and in less than 5 minutes, I got what I needed and for a fair price too! I'll most definitely visit this friendly place more often for photography gear in the future !
I love Central Camera. Last of the true camera shops. The employees are always very helpful. I stop in and buy something every time I'm in the City.
Old school camera shop. Great service. Very knowledgeable staff. What they dont know about cameras isn't worth knowing. Fixed my camera and we were delighted.
Most of the items in this shop were Repetive its clearly some where to get rich off customers. 70% of items are dusty and out dated 30% New orders of old items. Customer Service Were good.
The BEST CAMERA SHOP in Chicago. The staff is nice and very knowledgeable about all cameras. Definitely the only place to buy new and used gear.
This place is amazing. Cameras for any level of photography and video. Staff takes customer service to a whole new level. Can’t wait to go back!
Very friendly and helpful staff. Its fantastic that there's a location devoted to carrying on the art of photography even the older generation materials!
I have been going to Central since I started photographing at 14. I've bought many cameras and tons of film from them. There is nowhere in America left like it. The staff here knows it's stuff and are truly passionate about photogtaphy.
Fantastic store with a long, great history! Everything for digital and film photography!
Great old time camera shop. Venerable institution and pleasant, knowledgeable staff. Owner Don Flesch knows his photography and is a super nice guy!
This is THE classic camera store, in al the US, I believe. It is a Chicago landmark. From analog to digital, their knowledgeable employees can find it for you. The ambiance is out of this world.
Where, in the loop, are you going to find Fuji pack film to shoot in your ca. 1971 Polaroud Land camera? Only at A real, true camera store like Centeal Camera. Film (instant, medium format, 35mm) lenses, camera bodies, and phenomenal advice.
Very knowledge staff. A bit pricier than other camera and electronics stores, but if you can afford it, the experience is worth it.
Temptation EVERYWHERE in this store! Digital AND analog. You want something? Just go there, chances are it will be. Staff is also super nice and helpful.
Great store! Staff willing to answer film processing questions from out-of-towner.
Excellent and friendly service. So knowledgeable on all things camera related. Wish we had a camera shop like this back in my hometown.
Didn't purchase a cameras yet as I wanted to come in and test then out. Greg was very friendly with advice, and patient w my beginner questions and lack of camera knowledge. I'll be back soon
Staff is very nice, they gave me a pin after my visit!
very pricey, I just needed a simple battery charger (which I've seen online for under $20.. but i was traveling-- so in a pinch I was able to get what I need.. for $45. )
This place is amazing. It's very low-key. It's a museum for cameras, except you can buy these! 😎 Keep it up guys! …
Had a wonderful experience here today. Was my first time in the store and I found everyone so helpful and knowledgeable! Will be a regular customer for sure!
Awesome place. They'll fix camera's, hang out with the older gentlemen and talk about classical music, whatever you need or want they got it.
Old fashioned complete camera shop, cluttered, well staffed with knowledgeable staff. New, used, digital and film gear. These places are becoming rare.
Flew to Chicago for the weekend, forgot my camera battery. Called CCC on Friday afternoon, bought a battery over the phone and they charged it for me overnight! Picked up my charged battery, ready to go on Sat morning!
Keep and eye out for used parts and lenses. Probably the only things in the store that are reasonably priced. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.
The last and best full service camera store in the area, filled with knowledgeable staff. For both professional and amateur photographers.
Bought my wife and lens from here and she loved it. Very helpful employees who made the buying process smooth.
Super awesome place. Been open since the 1800s and it's got some old neon I got a tripod from there.
This is a great place in the Loop to get equipment and to learn...I spent time learning from Divi who really knew her stuff...so when I was ready to purchase, I didn't feel lost on the product...
Wonderful place.. glad to see them back open
Wonderful little shop full of wonderful people!
Lots of cool items and very welcoming to new customers
Highly recommended spot for film development. Staff is super knowledgeable and kind. I’ve never found better prices.
Knowledgeable staff, huge selection of digital and film cameras and accessories. Lots of film choices. Highly recommended for the camera nut.
Most friendly and knowledgeable staff. Always willing to help and go the extra mile to keep their customers informed, even if when we think we know what we want. They know what we need.
They have many photography items I thought I would never seen again in a store. Employees are very knowledgeable.
Nice small camera shop with a lot of pro lighting and supplies. Real nice staff looking to help in any way they can.
First visit. Great people. Total old school, love it! They got me going again to develop b&w
Amazing experience in this store! If you go there u need talk with Don and Tim! They are a great and friendly people! I high recommend!!
Great local shop able to relate to me and answer my questions as have used the camera I wanted not just a sales person
great place for all things old school photography, very helpful with any questions you have, and very willing to help you find a solution for your photographic needs.
Given that it's a photographic icon in Chicago history, the staff could be a little nicer, thus making one stay a little longer to browse and perhaps buy...
Grumpy. Went looking for a softbox whilst shooting in the US. Weren't interested. Cool sign though. Lots and lots of film in there which is brill to see.
this has got to be the best camera shop in town, I found some very rare models here and also some good acessories.
Happy to stop by. Most the employees are very friendly. My first time in I was offered a York patty
If you haven't found this place yet be sure to!! BEST and most knowledgeable camera shop I have ever been to.
Experienced staff, only downside no regular offers like online places. Better for them if they are to provide some deals to compete with online places
It's like walking back in time. Meet your camera needs. The staff is well knowledge and very helpful and friendly.
Were able to get me a lens for my old D40x when it broke hours before I was leaving Chicago. Highly recommended
Nice collection of used gear. The staff if extremely knowledgeable. They also do prints!
I love this place. Staff is always knowledgeable and their supplies are always in stock! Never had a bad experience here.
Great place to get camera supplies and equipment. They have knowledgeable staff and can answer more obscure questions.
Places like this keep film photography going. I may well be back to pick up one of their fantastic selection of used cameras this trip.
Go to spot for all your photographic needs, analog or digital. Very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful sales staff.
I know the last things about photography but these people are very professional. They helped some friends of mine get everything they needed.
Had a great experience with these guys.
They digitized 76 metal slides from 1974 without a problem.
Couldn't be happier.
Maybe more expensive than online if you need small accessories, but they really help make sure you're getting the right tools for the job.
Really cool camera store. They have it all. Absolute best customer service.
Probably the greatest camera store ever. If you don't make a pilgrimage there then you aren't a true photographer.
Wow amazing place for a photographers which have both used and new camera and accessories with huge selection and very helpfull stuff
Very old school and a bit on the slow side when it comes to closing out transactions, but the staff and products are legendary! I don't go an anywhere else!
Nickens find just about anything you want for camera old and new store is the great store
Great place with some great people. Make sure to say hi to the owner! He’s such a nice man.

A staple in Chicago! Always a good conversation! The staff is friendly and always has something I want.I want that porcelain neon sign!
Great camera store - digital, film, and darkroom, new and used equipment.
I love Central Camera and my family have gone there for at least 60 years. It feels very tired now.
Was not what I expected. However I did receive decent customer service
To keep it simple it’s a nice store is been there for a while new employees come and go sometimes lack of patience with customers being rude never with me but with people that I’ve been telling them to go to the store
