It was easy to make an appointment. I was able to be scheduled within a reasonable about of time. My wait in the waiting room was shorter than it took me to fill out the paperwork. I felt like the Vet and the Vet assistant were thorough in their questions and assessment. Definitely will be back and would recommend.

Vets friendly, gentle and caring with pets; they listen, and provide clear explanations to owners. Front desk staff friendly. Check-in/check-out is pretty quick considering the volume of people/pets they serve while maintaining personable and individualized service. In 7.5 years, I only had one minor complaint--i.e.,I did not realize there would be a charge to cutting my dog's pills prior to staff cutting them--but they fixed that by null charging it for that instance and informing me that there would be a charge in the future for that service. After that, I bought my own pill splitter, though the cost was not really prohibitive.

We have a long history with Dog and Cat, or at least starting from when we moved to Norfolk, got married, and got our first puppy in 2003! Drs. Hallstrom, Gerlach, and Schaefer have taken consistently wonderful care of our dogs. We were referred by the Stiles/Burch family back then because they had gone through a lot with their labs over the years and had wonderful things to say. We were not disappointed. The doctors always spent ample time talking about concerns and giving our dogs a thorough exam. I felt like they were treated with patience and kindness always, and even remembered between visits. When we adopted a more high maintenance puppy later in our Dog and Cat client years, we were still pleased with the way you guys handled his needs. He was pretty high drama, but the staff wasn't. They found solutions to his fears, and gave us special permission to work around them. You have taken us through our very first baby and his passing, and now are caring lovingly for our 16 year old wonder dog and her "high maintenance" companion. I whole heartedly recommend this practice to all who move into the area with four legged family members! 🐾🐾❤️

Everything was great. Leia, my cat, actually jumped over the counter and walked all over the receptionists. They loved her!!! Dr. Bell and her assistant were great. All my questions were answered and thankfully Leia's bloodwork and urinalysis shows she's in good health. I highly recommend DOG&CAT HOSPITAL.

This is the best vet!! They are kind, patient, and gentle with my very scared and grumpy kitty who hates the vet. Most vets don’t even want to help him or try to drug him immediately when he walks in the door. But not here. They really care about the animals!! We always have a good experience here. They are also very fairly priced compared to other places we have been. We wouldn’t go anywhere else!

My cat has been having itching issues. Which caused him to have a lot of bald patches. He recently injured his toe. It was missing the nail, and gory. I had to go in for some medication (antibiotics, and a steroid allergy medicine). I gave only 4 stars because I don’t like how they are just assuming my cat might have allergies without doing any allergy testing.

I have been taking my rottie pup here for a while now, for a couple of annual checkups, his neuter, and some tummy trouble when I couldn’t get seen at the emergency vet. Every time has been great, including during the shutdown when they had to switch to curbside service. All the staff have been perfectly professional and friendly, and service has been prompt and personal each time. I brought my cat here this morning for her first checkup since combining households with my husband and received the same thorough service I’ve come to expect. My dog was seen this afternoon for his checkup by Dr. Johnson, and she was so incredible with him and gave us so much helpful information on training out some unwanted behaviors and trimming off his quarantine fifteen. Receiving this level of service at a super reasonable price point, as well as not having to wait ages for an appointment is something so valuable when you love your animals. I can’t say enough good stuff about Dog & Cat - I highly recommend them to everyone!!

The vet tech named Joe was the best, instead of letting me leave and come back for blood work he made it happen after catching me on the way out, 5 stars for him. Don't appreciate being sold medicine without being told that it's $170 for 6 pills, sheesh. I'm sure it works but I have had the same results with something 1/4 the price. It did feel like I was shuffled in and out quickly.

I left a review when my dog Jojo was seen by Dr. Hallstrom. Jojo has since passed and I have a new family member named Chyna. Chyna is a 3 year old Belgian Malinois. She is VERY high strung and has extreme anxiety. She does not like other dogs and hates being in the waiting kennels. The staff at Dog and Cat are VERY compassionate towards Chyna's issues and have gone out of their way to soothe and take Chyna to a less stressful environment. Chyna's doctor is Dr. Mistzar she is AWESOME . I also LOVE the techs and receptionists. They are so patient, kind and understanding and take the time to answer any questions or concerns you have about your fur baby. And if they don't know how to answer your question...they will find someone in the office that does. DOG AND CAT HOSPITAL IS THE BEST!!🥰🥰🥰

My cat was having lots of urinary blockage issues and was coming in and out of the emergency vet. We were scared to have to put our 1 year old cat down but we were then referred here. The surgeon here offers the PU operation which is the only thing you can really do after repetitive blockages in male cats. It’s a pretty invasive surgery and we did everything absolutely correct including the initial care post-op and even giving him exclusively urinary SO food as told by Dr.. After the stitches came out 2 weeks later another week passed by and again, it happened. Blocked again and have no idea why. We came back through walk in here to see what was going on. Wasn’t good news, looked like he was blocked again due to scar tissue which is a very rare thing to happen. I guess we couldn’t get any luck with our buddy but we stayed persistent and we continued with a corrective surgery for that. All over again with meds, keeping him contained in a large crate to allow healing, and lots of love and care and he Is currently okay. No sign of straining and will be getting the stitches out again tomorrow. This place has been wonderful in helping with caring for our cat. Although from all the scar tissue and the second surgery we still felt it wasn’t their fault, as this type of thing just happens. They were much cheaper than most places around Hampton roads and they quickly see your pet in emergency situations. They are affordable and helped keep costs low as we basically had to pay for a while second surgery. We absolutely love the place and the busy atmosphere and you can tell everyone here loves their job!

A long-standing appointment to have my feral kitty neutered and prepared to move indoors was cancelled by my regular vet because he was on vacation (no one informed me of this until I called to confirm the day of the appt, right before trapping kitty). They offered to reschedule in two weeks, which was much too long to wait. I started making calls, hoping someone could see him sooner. I was amazed and relieved when Dog & Cat Hospital said they could see us the very next day! Everyone was great, especially Dr. Gerlach, who called with an update after the procedure; and Robin, who was very thorough and knowledgeable. She explained post-op care and even shared tips on socializing feral kitties. I'm absolutely thrilled to have discovered this wonderful veterinary practice!

Service is excellent and always ready to assist. I would like two things to change in order for me to give a five star review 1. Allow Pet parent to be in the room with pets when they are in the technician’s room. 2. In regard to time considerations for pet parents(we are busy folks) to bunch up bloodwork, teeth cleaning and annual visit in one day. My last vet (Memphis, TN) the technicians allowed me to drop my dogs off in the morning and I’ll pick my pets up later that morning after the dogs received all 3 treatments. It does two things. Pet visiting vets are stressful events no matter you Slice or dice it. By reducing the number of visits means reducing the number of days they are stressed out. The pets’ parent also have to make time to take their pets to the vet and that means us taking time off work to make this happen. That’s time and money.

Dr. Drinkwater was amazing! She explained the life cycle of fleas, the different stages, and how to get them out of my house. I think your prices are extremely high in comparison to a few other vet offices in the area. I adore Dr. Gerlach and for this reason only I continue to come here. If he leaves or retires I will go elsewhere. Dr. Gerlach is alot like Dr. H was and seems to genuinely care. I do feel that some of your vets want to push unnecessary or additional procedures to add to your bottom line. I miss the good ole days when Dr.H was there and actually took his time with your pet.

I came in with my pup because she’d been throwing up blood and having extreme diarrhea all night. I tried to take her to an emergency vet but they very callously said they “didn’t even know if they could help her and It’d be $250 for walking through the door” at which point I turned around and drove to cat and dog and waited in the parking lot until they opened, the vet assistant at the front was so sweet ,understanding and responsive she immediately got my girl in to see the vet we were in and out within 40 minutes with a diagnosis and medication. My Dog is part of my family and I really appreciate Cat and Dog for treating her as such she’ll only be coming to them from now on. Thank you!

I absolutely hate giving bad reviews, especially to a place my family members and I have taken our four pawed children to for decades (hence my reason for 3 stars instead of 1). However, the last year I’ve gone there on 5 different occasions and ALL 5 of those times it took me an average of 20-30 minutes of calling, waiting, and holding JUST to get through to the front desk to TRY to make an appointment. Which reminds me, WHAT’S UP WITH THE PHONE SYSTEM?! Their main number was disconnected out of service for I don’t know how long and I had to search for another correct? temporary? number to call. Half the time I’d get hung up on before even getting to a person, and finally when I’d get through, I’d either get put on hold again, or a staff member would answer in a tone sounding as if there’s a hostage situation going on or some kind of life and death crisis and then tell me there are no appointments available but to call exactly at 8am to get a same day/walk-in slot. Hey, I get that we’re still dealing with aspects of the pandemic, the vet hospital is busy, lots of patients need to be seen, etc., etc. But if it’s THAT busy, perhaps increasing staff and not taking new patients would be the reasonable thing to do so you can focus on quality as opposed to quantity. Not sure what the answer is, but c’mon guys/gals, get it together!!! Oh yeah, and fix that darn phone system!!!!

I came in for an emergency service after my cat had gotten into some trouble with broken glass. They were quick to get him back, answer all of my questions, And a delight to interact with once i calmed down! Maddie & Dr. Ralph were both so great. I was really worried about my cat and also concerned I would look like a bad owner since he was sick, but I didn’t get that feeling at all. They were both really helpful and informative and comforting. Dr. Ralph let me listen to my cats irregular heartbeat because I was curious. It was a way better experience than I was anticipating. Also, very fast and efficient. I had answers the next morning and all my treatment options and costs so I could make the best decision.

Dr. Drinkwater is the absolute BEST! She takes such good care of and is so good with my dogs and takes the time to thoroughly explain things to me. I followed her to Dog & Cat Hospital from East Beach Vet beause we like her so much, not only her skills, talent and experience but she had to perform such an intricate and challening surgery on my dog that even she tells stories about to this day. It wasn't until she had started the surgery that she found out how challenging it would be for her. Obvioulsy it was a success and we will follow her wherever she goes! The reat of the staff is amazing too, they are very nice and halpful anytime I call or I am at the office with my dogs for a visit. It's a it pricey but ALL health care is anymore, humans or animals.

My vet conversation was satisfactory, but I miss the face to face experience where other Issues and insights may come up and be resolved. It is also very frustrating to try to plan ahead for appointments when, as with children, often there is just the realization that the issue is actually more important than you thought and the animal really should have medical attention. This doesn’t mean it’s an emergency but it does mean the animal needs to be seen Without waiting a week. I think the staff at dog and cat realize this and are doing their best to make appointments. It is a frustrating time for everyone. I appreciate their efforts and look forward to better days.

The dog and cat hospital veterinarians have provided nothing but top-quality care and customer service to me and my family since the day we walked in they have gone above and beyond and taking care of my pets and addressing my concerns as well as making time to see them in an emergency when they were open. For a long Time I felt that that care was not affordable for the average person and that there was no good vet clinic that was cheap. I found this place through a referral from my friend at work when my dog was acting funny and I was in a panic. They made time for me to bring him in and were aware of my financial concerns. It has never cost me more than I thought it would to come here and fact it has cost less on many occasion. I don’t even think that I have a preference for that because they are all so good although I really enjoyed the last one that I spoke with at my cats appointment. Once I was called up, the girl who actually help was friendly, but upon walking in the vibe was very put-offish. Thankfully the back end staff was extremely nice and I knew he was going to be in great hands! Upon picking him up, the doctor was a little overwhelmed with clients picking up their furbabies, but she acknowledged me and I understood. She was polite, went over the discharge papers quickly and gave me his meds. However I was there about eight months ago and it seems like I waited for eternity once I got in the room to see the veterinarian. Veterinarian was very nice and seemed very caring. Dr. Gurlach is always so gentle & kind our cat, Lady Guadalupe. I feel 100% confident entrusting him with her life, especially during covid- where we couldn’t go in with her for her visit. He is very knowledgable & his “bedside manner” is impeccable. Update- I had to bring my cat to an “emergency same day appointment” when I saw she had blood in her urine, and I saw Dr. Hayes. The visit went well, and Dr. Hayes suggested I have them do a urinalysis, draw some blood, and give some fluids, then her home with pain meds. Dr. Hayes said I would get a call within 48 hours, so I called before they closed today (48 hours later), and she is not in the office today. I’m stressing about if my cat has a UTI or something more serious, and I have to wait hopefully no more than another day. This is frustrating, and I feel like another doctor could call me to discuss her results, and if she has a UTI or something more serious, I want to treat her ASAP. I saw other reviews about stuff like this, and this is my first poor experience of Dog & Cat Hospital, and it is not a great experience.

Due to Covid-19, the cat check up was a curbside appointment. The vet called and discussed the check up with me and gave me plenty of time to ask questions. Payment was by phone and Zinn and I were on our way. The appointment worked very well and maybe less anxiety for Zinn since he didn't have to wait in the reception room with all the dogs. I'm basing this presumption on the relatively short wait time before the vet called me.

I have to take my dog in about every 6 weeks for Vet and grooming services. I have never had a problem getting taken care of quickly, even when I come on a walk-in basis. I have been a client of Dog & Cat since 2008. I have had my preference of the doctors over the years for well checks & follow ups. Some of those doctors have retired or moved on. I have seen different doctors over the years when one of my cats had an emergency appointment. I have never had a doctor I did not like or trust. I recently needed to be seen asap for an injury to my cat. I showed up at 8AM (on a Saturday no less)with no appointment. They were able to get her in at 9AM & stitched her up in an hour. I am very familiar with the awesomeness of Dr. Gerlach all these years. Dr. Drinkwater took care of my cat's injury & she was phenomenal. Dr. Mistarz saw her for her follow up when my cat got the bandage off & some sutures out (as cats tend to do very well). She was also wonderful. The assistants and the receptionists have come and gone just like some of the doctors but they have always treated me with respect and concern for my cats' wellbeing. Susan & Alberto you're the best. I would like to give a shout out to Karen & Carrie for being so awesome when I showed up with my injured cat. As stressed as I was I knew she would be taken care of by all at Dog & Cat so I could then relax. Thanks for all the hard work from all of the staff.

The Vet and the other workers were knowledgeble and very nice. Due to Covid, we stayed in the car and they came out to get our dog. The Vet called soon after and we discussed everything thoroughly and she answered all our questions. Our dog was brought out soon afterwards. The only complaint we have is that it took another 30-40 minutes of waiting in the car afterward for the receptionist to call to get our payment over the phone and for someone to bring out our paperwork. We have heard this from other dog owners who have take their animals to Dog & Cat Hospital. The rating would be 4-5 stars if not for the wait at the end.

30 years ago my wife and I had a large golden retriever. We were looking for a vet that specialized in large animals. Several folks we talked with recommend Dog & Cat Hospital. 4 dogs and 2 cats later we're still taking our pets to D&C. The staff and the doctors are very caring and personable. They excell at diagnosis of illnesses and any other problems our pets have encountered. All our pets are rescues and so they come with many problems, some have been life threatening. The doctors and staff have saved our pets countless times. For two of our big dogs their end of life at 16 (human years) was handled with compassion and understanding. It's hard to lose a pet when your children grow up with them. They are part of the family. We've recommended D&C to countless friends over the years. Try them you'll be glad you did.

I normally take my pupper to Dog and Cat hospital bc it’s close and convenient. They always greet me with a smile and take good care of my pup w/o anything unnecessary (I.e labs, or x-rays, etc.). The only thing I didn’t like is how they trimmed his nails. They’re not really the same length and the wick was cut on several toes, they even trimmed a broken nail which I felt was unnecessary. I know he struggles but that’s a bit much. Other than that, I love the care the vet gives him and the staff are nice and respectful to both me and my boy.

My only feedback is while Carolina Boxer Rescue is new to our area, they have been around since 2001 and are expanding. A few things! Good and bad. The bad. The front desk workers have been super rude and dismissive every single time I have spoken to someone and it has been hard to reach them. I get that they are super busy right now but I'm also trying to navigate this time and they have given customers very little instructions on how to approach the curbside service. So it just creates frustration on both ends. That being said! Every person who actually works with the pets in the back are always WONDERFUL. So I can deal with poor customer service as long as my doggo gets taken care of.

I've been going to Dog and Cat hospital for years. Dr. Gerlach is a wonderful doctor with an excellent bed side manner. We love him. My mother takes her animals to Dr Halstrom and Dr. Gerlach and she really likes them both. The staff are all wonderful. When I went yesterday, I took my cat there, it soiled itself on the way there. Having no supplies to clean my poor cat up, I asked the staff if they could help me. They took my cat to the back, cleaned him off and cleaned out the carrier to the best of their ability and put a puppy training pad in the bottom of the carrier so my kitty wouldn't have to sit on a dirty carrier on the way home. Everybody there goes above and beyond.

In this Covid-challenged time, your doctors & staff have your services down to a science. While I would prefer to be with my pet during exams and treatment and speak directly to the Doctor, given the situation, I can't think of a better way to accomplish as close to "normal" as you have. Waiting in the parking lot is little different than waiting in the waiting room and the phone or social-distanced report from the Vet afterwards is more than satisfactory. Ordering Rx or supplies and having them delivered to your car is even easier than before. Well done ! ! !

They are a hospital and hospitals have mask mandates. This Delta variant is covid 2021, not the covid of 2020. Even vaccinated people can get break through infections, and being indoors with unmasked people (including children) makes me nervous. Have a mask mandate and enforce it please Dog and Cat!!!

More specifically, Dr Gherlach has been our primary Vet from the start. He is exceptional and absolutely unique in a sea of Vets. His instincts and experience are second to none. They always get me in regardless of the last notice; are reasonably priced; and they are extremely caring and compassionate. He calls on the weekend and evenings to check on them following an appointment. He id one of the most honest people I have encountered. He will also reach out to specialists if he can't figure it out and get you a consultation. They didn't explain much of anything. I told them I was there for my dog's temper shot and rabbies vaccination and they took her to the back and brought her back later. I asked about the Sentinal heartworm prevention and the lady said, "Yes, she will need that for her entire life." But didn't bother to follow up or ask if I was interested. Luckily the lady at the desk let me purchase at checkout when I asked about it again. My dog has been drowsy since her shots, which I expected from my research on google but it would have been nice if I would have been told this by the staff. Not the worst, just some constructive criticism.
