Reviews of Ocean State Veterinary Specialists

I had to bring my mom's cat here when she had difficulty breathing around 7pm. The staff was very helpful and she was triage immediately. The Dr was quick to diagnose her and clearly explained what the plan of action was and why. I was incredibly impressed with the compassion of all of the staff. I'm grateful we have this resource. Yes, it was pricey but with all of the technology, treatments and trained staff it was well worth the cost.

I had just returned home from vacation and found that one of my bunnies was really ill. I just moved to MA I couldn’t find any vets near me in Attleboro who would see her until I found ocean state. I was nervous because of some reviews I saw but ultimately I didn’t really have a choice, seeing as that was the only vet that would take her. While they were very busy when I arrived, they did get her back pretty quickly and within 25 minutes I was in an exam room and the vet had come in. Unfortunately she did need to be put down. I was told it would be too stressful for her if I was in the room with her room while they did it but they did give me the option to be there if they did the euthanasia via IV. I trusted their advice and opted to stay behind. They allowed me to have my last moments with her before taking her back. I wanted to bring her back home as she was a part of a bonded pair and it helps the grieving process for the other rabbit to be able to say their goodbyes. They wrapped her up in a beautiful box and very gracefully laid her to rest. I was expecting to have a large bill seeing as it was an emergency visit and bunnies are a niche in the veterinarian field. But, I
think it was very reasonable for the services they provided. I would definitely go back with my other 3 rabbits.

We had a wonderful experience when our pup wasn't feeling well.. The staff was professional, prompt and caring. Our Charlie needed to be evaluated on a Sunday morning. We called ahead and the receptionist was very nice. There are so many people to thank. Everyone was kind and loving. Special thanks to Matt, who Charlie immediately bonded with! We know where to go if there's a future pet emergency! 🐾 ❤️ 🐾

The staff is so amazing! Their knowledge on emergency care is above all others. They have saved three of our animals over the past decade and we will always keep them in our thoughts and prayers as they help others each day!

When my cat started acting strange— not eating, not using the bathroom, not acting like herself, and throwing up several times a day— I was worried that I was ended up at Ocean State due to the bad reviews. I had called several emergency hospitals recommended by my regular vet that night, all that said they were too busy to take my cat. Finally, I tried ocean state. When I called, the gentleman that answered was so nice. I explained what was going on with my Bonnie and said that no other hospital would take me and he said I could come right in and that they would take great care of her, and even made a point to tell me to drive safe (as the weather was bad that n of her and he knew I was nervous and wanted to get Bonnie in as soon as possible). When I arrived, it was obviously a wait (in the middle of the night, the week after Christmas, at an emergency vet hospital) before I heard an update on Bonnie. They were also short staffed because of COVID! They ended up keeping her over night, as they were worried about an obstruction due to her suspicious x ray. They kept her for a few days and eventually did exploratory surgery when she did not improve. They balanced both her need for treatment and the risks of unnecessary surgery by not performing surgery right away. The surgery came back negative (they found nothing) other than an inflamed pancreas, which led to the final diagnosis of pancreatitis, which is very difficult to diagnose in cats and the treatment is supportive care (fluids, catheter, feeding tube). When I got her home the recovery was difficult for us both, but after two weeks she is finally back to normal and feeling better than ever. Like I said, I was very wary after ending up her in the middle of the night in a panic over my sick kitten, because I knew something was seriously wrong. But ocean state surpassed all of my expectations. The call you twice a day with updates on your hospitalized patients, explain all medical terms in depth for those who are not in the medical field, and even send you daily pictures to your email of your hospitalized pet. Honestly, I could not have had a better experience. Bonnie is finally back to normal life and we are both so happy! Ocean state is amazing, and takes great care of animals. They are dedicated to the health of your pet, and YES they are expensive. They are a 24 hour hospital, open at all hours, and are short staffed due to covid. And it is your child!! Any price is with the health of your pet ❤️.

My dog became partially paralyzed after jumping off the couch. After the jump, she was able to walk but did look uncomfortable. We took her to Mass/RI where they have her a muscle relaxer and pain meds and sent her home for monitoring. The next morning she could not stand and her front legs were bent under her and she was unable to walk. I called ocean state and they took her into the ER immediately for further evaluation. She was diagnosed with a cervical injury and needed an MRI and possible surgery. Unfortunately the MRI showed a C3 injury needing surgical repair but was tricky because of the close proximity to her phrenic nerve, the nerve that innervates your diaphragm (breathing muscle). We were terrified but they stated she had a 90 percent chance of full recovery. We elected to go ahead with the surgery and I'm so happy to report our girl bella is home and doing well! She is able to walk 3 days post op and is as happy as ever!! THE DOCTORS AND STAFF AT OCRAN STATE saved my dog's life!! Yes it cheap, no! But when you have an animal you need to be prepared for unexpected emergencies with savings or pet insurance! I can not thank Ocean State enough! Without them our bella would not be with us today!! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

The young veterinarian was very experienced and she was very compassionate and sensible. She made the whole process a lot easier. It was obvious that she really cared about the owner and the pet and that she knew how to handle things. The rest of the staff was great too. They were a couple of techs who helped out. They were also very compassionate. In the end, a very old cat who would not die needed a little help. When I was there, they were quite a few other customers with sick or dying cats and dogs. It was very helpful to be around so many other owners who were just trying to do right by their furry family members.

Our visit to Ocean State Veterinary Specialists sadly ended in having to put our beloved dog to sleep. However, the staff there was exceptional. The vet that met with us, Dr. Moses, was kind and compassionate. He explained everything in terms that we could understand and informed us of the treatment choices that were available. When we decided it was best to give our dog a peaceful goodbye, the vet and vet techs were compassionate, not rushed and caring. They gave us as much time as we wanted with our dog and took the time to answer all our questions. They are busy there and they probably have to go through this process all the time, so it meant the world to us that they cared and gave us the time that we needed.

I brought my dog, Bentley in and they couldn’t have been better! I have zero complaints. His injury is still fresh, but so far everything has been great. He had to stay overnight and a good portion of today and they updated me numerous times and even sent a picture which was a nice surprise!
Linda Zenone Bibee
They were very good with my dog. The service was quick when we entered. They brought her right in, came out and communicated with us. We did have to leave her overnight for IV fluids and antiemetics for nausea. The doctor called us twice with updates and a picture of her was sent to us. She was able to come home the following evening...

Dr. Turner cared for my dog Daisy when she was sick and I could not be more grateful! Her compassion and kindness really helped me get through this really scary experience. The wait was a little long but I understand how busy and overburdened the industry is right now and the whole staff worked so hard to get my baby seen as soon as possible!
Emily Goodman
I had an incredibly positive experience here. They were able to almost immediately make time to take a look at my dog who had been attacked by another dog a few hours earlier. The staff were patient and attentive with my questions even though they were already busy. My dog seemed extremely comfortable with their staff as they gave her a thorough exam, and she came out of the back room looking calm and happy, which is so rare for a dog in a place like this. They gave us peace of mind and it's endlessly appreciated. Thank you Ocean State Veterinary Specialists!!!!!

Traveled over 1.5 hours to come here. Highly recommended by a friend. Staff was professional and helpful. I was very satisfied with our treatment. I received phone call updates on my pet's condition and a picture update. They were also able to see my pet immediately. I am from Western mass and nobody out here could help me. I highly recommend Ocean state and will definitely comeback in the future if needed. Very satisfied customer!

Although our outcome was not what we wanted OSVS did everything that they could do for our dog Reese. They kept us informed daily about his condition and treatments. The staff at OSVS truly cares about their patients and pet parents. I want to thank all the dedicated staff the Veterinarian Technicians and the Doctor’s who took care of Reese. I especially would like to thank Dr. Kelly Pandolpho and your Vet Techs who were dedicated to taking care of Reese. We truly appreciate your balance of daily encouragement and the reality of the worst case scenario. I know that you were rooting for him. When the day came, I could see in their eyes that they really care about their patients and pet parents. Lastly, we want to thank you for taking care of Reese’s after life arrangements and the sympathy that you extended to us once Reese’s remains were given to us. He is truly missed but home.

After a month of being misled & dismissed by our own family Veterinarian VCA Atwood Animal Hospital (in retrospect I now feel just for the $$$$) we took our almost 12 -year-old Min Pin to Ocean State Emergency room yesterday. Although the outcome was one we dreaded, we had a wonderful experience with the staff there, especially Dr. Sapala. We feel so blessed she was put in our path last night to help us navigate through the most heartbreaking decision any pet owner can make. She is a consummate professional along with being comforting and extremely epenthetic. I wish she had her own practice, I would recommend her most highly and OSVS should be proud she represents them. Thank you Dr. Sapala from the bottom our hearts! You are a credit to her profession!

Wow, I am so grateful that this office exists and that they offer such great care to animals. I had to bring my dog in late last night, which was a bit stressful. The staff truly seem to care about the animals, not just mine, but I witnessed the attention they were offering to others there also. They were extremely kind and helpful, so I cannot thank them enough. I would highly recommend this place to others, and I would definitely return if ever needed!

We had an amazing experience. They not only saved our dogs life, but the level of care and communication multiple times a day throughout the process was first class. The vast majority of negative post are the cost. It is expensive you a basically taking you pet to the equivalent of one of the top hospital in the country that you would choose if you were seriously ill. That said, they gave us a high and a low estimate that had a $4,000 variance. The bill was slightly less than the low estimate so they are obviously very honest. We could not be happier and realize we made the right choice. It has been about 3 months now and our 11 year old Terrier is acting like a puppy again.

We brought our senior dog here late at night for an emergency. It was pricy, but he received excellent care. The place was clean, staff was friendly and was helpful in calming us down (we were emotional wrecks). We received better news than we had anticipated! While I hope we never have to come back here again, I will definitely be bringing him back if God forbid he should need urgent care.

We brought our guinea pig in 3 days ago for serious problems I won't detail here. The veterinarian on duty told us the prognosis wasn't good and that we should euthanize, but also gave us a list of directions if we chose to try and save our pet. We chose to give him a fighting chance. As it turns out we had to put him down today as everything we tried had only short term positive effects. The staff here are very thoughtful, and even though they probably see many pets put to sleep, they made us feel as good as possible in this type of situation. They also did a great job preparing the remains for home burial.

One of our pups recently experienced some health scares and we had to bring him to OSVS. The staff was extremely helpful and informative during Tank's overnight stay. We were kept up to date on his progress through email and even provided with pictures. When Tank was discharged we were given clear instructions on the care he needed at home. Only a few days later we were instructed by our vet to rush Tank back to OSVS due to the results of his bloodwork. There was no containing my fear and stress; I was an absolute mess as I had no idea what was wrong with my 6 year old happy-go-lucky aussie. The vet techs immediately took Tank in to be treated and a kind member from the staff brought me into a room so I could have privacy and time to compose myself. Within an hour and a half, maybe, I'm not entirely sure (it felt like a lifetime), the doctor came in to tell me that she thought she knew what was going on. She was so patient with me, as I struggled to compose myself to form simple sentences. The doctor was optimistic that Tank was going to be okay, assuming her theory was correct. She told me what their game plan was and that I would be contacted later that evening with an update. I left OSVS with so many emotions, including slight relief. As promised, we did receive a call from the doctor later that evening. She took the time to explain to my husband and myself what she told me in the hospital (she knew it was a lot for me to process in that moment). The following day, we received an email update (and picture) with how Tank was doing. Later in the day, the doctor called back with the results of the bloodwork and the affirmative plan to treat Tank's condition. Tank was released to us the next afternoon once they knew he was strong enough. A vet tech went over the discharge instructions and we were so happy to be taking our Tank Top home. My husband and I didn't care what the costs were to make Tank better, we would have done whatever it took. Tank was at OSVS for 4 days and 3 nights, with round the clock care. The price we paid really didn't cost more than a weeks vacation to Disney. We are eternally grateful to OSVS for what they did for Tank and our family. Their knowledge, compassion and dedication brought Tank back to his family - which means more than words could ever express.

If i could give 10 stars i would. If your pet needs medical intervention above what a standard Veterinarian's office this is the place to go. Wonderful staff & Doctors. Explained course of clinical procedures. Kept us updated and care very much for patients and families. Price is a relative term however, it is expensive to run such a Veterinary pratice. These Doctors, Techs, and equipment is state of the art and expensive. They deserve every penny they charge. A wonderful place when your pet needs excellent care!!

Our very loved, 11 month old ferret got sick, all of a sudden. He started getting really tired, got bumps on his body, one on his neck that got so big he couldn’t hold up his head. His regular vet couldn’t help him so he referred us to Tufts. Tufts evaluated him and sent him home. After getting nowhere over a 2 week period, we called Ocean State and left a desperate message for the exotic doctor! She had him admitted to the hospital the very next day, diagnosed, and put on a recovery plan. Without their help, our ferret wouldn’t have made it! Ocean State honestly saved his life and were so considerate, empathetic and consultative throughout the process. Not to mention, Ocean State was over $2,000 cheaper than Tufts! I cannot thank Dr. Spelman and team for saving our little Charlie’s life! We now have so many more years with such an amazing little guy!
Justin Johnson
They did a great job communicating and from what I can tell they did the best they could do address the most in need pets. It made my wait longer, but I was happy to see them treating the cats and dogs that needed immediate care. Yes, expensive; but this is emergency care. It's to be expected

I called Ocean State last night as my dog had been vomiting and I was very nervous. It was 12am and I live 40 minutes away. They checked with the vet and gave me guidance on how to handle it at home, to call if he wasn’t better by morning. In such a for profit world of vet medicine, I’m really thankful they did not take advantage of my anxiety and instead gave me advice while still urging me to call if it got worse. As the vet had assumed, he’s feeling better and back to normal after a stomach happy diet this morning!

We called for help because our own vet and other local places wouldn't see our 16 year old beagle. We knew he was at the end with his systems shutting down. Ocean State allowed us to come in with an emergency check. The whole staff showed us the concern we needed and treated us with the utmost care. We had to have him put down and gave us the best care and concern. We would recommend them to anyone to seek their help
Lucy Lou
We have had to put down three pets here, which included our Mama. The staff is generally kind and compassionate. The most recent experience, however, could have been a bit warmer considering....

Brought my dog in for an outpatient echocardiogram, staff were great and we were out within a half hour. My dog loved the technician who took care of her.
-1* is a warning when filling out your paperwork. Do NOT give them your social security number! Don't give that info at any doctors office. Why they ask for drivers license info too is a mystery. The receptionist said they are told "it's for billing". It isn't. If this system is hacked, they are going to be in alot of legal hot water.

We thought our dog might have eaten a sewing needle. We took her over at 8:30 am to Ocean State Vets. They X-rayed her, found the needle, and extracted it safely using an Endoscope. We brought her home that afternoon. They were fantastic! She suffered no I’ll effects. I am very grateful for their expertise!

I recieved great service! Our dog needed an emergency "C" section. She had already whelped 7 puppies so it was a little complicated keeping 7 pups while the mother is getting surgery. The surgery went off without a hitch...we were even credited back to our account what wasn't needed or used. It is very difficult these days trying to find an emergency vet for surgery and OSVS was there for us. Staff was great...they even checked the newborn puppies and weighed them!

We took our res turtle for a ear abscess surgery and had no issues with the people there. They were very polite and professional throughout the process and they were able to schedule for surgery a couple days after the first visit. Now he is home and ready for recovery!!!

If your dog's life is more important than your money, these guys are the ones to seek. They have a team of doctors that specializes in all fields. They brought my dog back to life a few years ago. She is still alive and well. I am grateful. Who says money can't buy you happiness?
Wendy Wilmarth
Well, It's true you have to wait a long time before they see your pet, and yes, this clinic is really expensive. Back in the past, you were able to get a plan to pay high bills, I do not know today. I did spent about $7,000 or $8,000 for my daughter's cat, he ate a poisonous plant and got really ill, but he survived, he is still around healthy and silly! I gave four stars because recently I called trying to get appointment for my other cat and they didn't take her, after I spent that much money in there not just for the cat, but also my black Labrador, ?????
marietta martone
Many thanks to Dr Miranda and Dr ivan Moses for their knowledge and expertise in diagnosing my Sophie’s condition. They are compassionate about the pets they care for and were extremely thorough explaining options of treatment and how to go forward to keep Sophie comfortable. It was my pleasure to have you treat Sophie and I wish you Happy Holidays 😊
Peter Hill
Awesome experience. Took abit for someone to come out to check on my pup but amazing service. After finding and cleaning up the minor tear near his dewclaw they treated it brought him back. Said keep and eye on it and told me to have a nice day. No charge for 5 minute clean and treatment
Catherine Sullivan
Took my 100lb dog here last night. He got into the trash in our bathroom and about 9 tampons and a few pads. Obviously we were concerned as they would expand. The team immediately took him back and induced vomit. I’m so thankful for the team, I was super worried we would have to opt for surgery. The team was super knowledgeable and helpful every step of the way. I could not be any happier with the care and service we received.

Our 4 year old cat became very ill when we were on an extended trip in Rhode Island (we live in Colorado but I’m from RI). He had been “off” for a few weeks and eventually was admitted to OSVS and was diagnosed with pancreatitis, toxoplasmosis, and fatty liver. Ocean state did an amazing job with our cat. We were given daily updates with photos for the 4 days he was in the hospital and we were explained all of the care he needed with costs up front. When he was sent home he had a feeding tube and several medications we had to administer. We were given thorough instructions and when we had questions after the fact, Dr. Kirchofer was extremely helpful and willing to talk us through things. He also gave us contacts on our road trip back to colorado in case of emergencies since we drove. I would recommend OSVS as they saved our cats life.

Let me start this review by saying that I work at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists. I have worked there for 5 years as a customer service representative. I go to work every day helping clients with their pets emergencies; I listen to owners cry on the phone and can hear the concern in their voice for their pets wellbeing. I have been fortunate enough to not have had to experience any major medical emergencies for my animals, and I always thought I would be prepared to handle them when that day were to come. But on Sunday 9/11/22 I truly wasn't prepared and I felt exactly like all the clients I speak with daily while at work. I woke up to my 5 year old French Bulldog, Quincy, paralyzed, acutely unable to use his hind legs. To say I was a wreck is an understatement. I knew logistically what the steps were that needed to be done; get to an ER, have an MRI, and then surgery. But nothing is that easy; with it being a Sunday, OSVS doesn't have MRI capability; and with it being a Sunday most other ERs were at full deferral unable to see my dog. In panic of what to do, I went to the one place that felt safe to me, OSVS, knowing I would need to come up with a plan to go elsewhere for an MRI and surgery. When I arrived at OSVS I carried Quincy to the treatment area and began to cry from fear of the reality of what was happening. One of the veterinary technicians, Erica, came over to me right away to help, and I will forever be grateful for her. She wasn't just a voice for my dog, she was a voice for me when I needed it the most. She helped talk me through what was happening, she helped to find a doctor to look at my dog, she helped administer medications, and was truly an advocate for everything my dog needed. It was a moment that I had always thought I was prepared for, especially working in the field, but the dog mom in me was a nervous wreck and heartbroken. All I can say is, thank god for Erica Murdock, one of the most selfless, caring, knowledgeable, veterinary technicians at OSVS. I can not begin to thank her enough for the care she gave to my Quincy and to myself.

Very caring and compassionate. They took excellent care of our kitty. She is feeling much better today. Thank you

Yesterday I brought my dog in for an urgent ultrasound. Seamless customer service. I had a phone call with Dr. Ann Klocke who took time to explain the procedure, all of the concerns about my dog and answered all of my questions compassionately and patiently. These individuals have the hardest job in the world. They take care of our sick or injured pets. Thankfully, Ocean State offers specialty services so we don’t have to drive to Tufts! Thank you for being so caring to both me and my dog. I’ve been happy every time I’ve been here for both my dog and my cats.

Came here after our golden retriever puppy decided to swallow a squeaker at 1am. Tech and Vet were AWESOME. From the professional triage through intake and then discharge at 2am on a holiday weekend we were nothing but impressed. Excellent bedside manor and took the time for education and questions even in the rain! will keep them on speed dial if we have ever are in the area. Well done.

I brought my beloved bunny there a few weeks ago when he was showing signs of stasis. He was seen right away, treatment was initiated and I was able to bring him home. Even though she wasn’t the one treating him, Dr. Spellman was very responsive to all follow-up questions I had as he recovered over the next week at home and returned to his happy self. Unfortunately he became sick again a couple weeks later while I was away, and my dedicated friend took over his care while being advised by Dr Spellman & the on-call exotic specialist every step of the way. When we realized he had taken a turn for the worst despite all efforts & interventions, he was brought back to OSVS who confirmed the bad news. We made the heartbreaking decision to euthanize him to spare him further suffering. OSVS laid him to rest in a beautiful “casket” which included a sympathy letter with his paw prints. For grieving pet owners, something like this is so meaningful.

My 9yr old Boston Terrier broke his leg 2 Saturday's ago so we brought him to OSVS and the care the showed for him was INCREDIBLE!! They treated Riley as if he was their own and continue to check in on him to see how his progress is going This happened last minute (at night) and they were EXTREMELY helpful and accommodating

Thank you from bottom of our hearts for saving our fur son toy poodle “Midnight”’s life this year ! After a week in your hospital care lead by Dr. Doran, (along with your excellent ER liaisons Elizabeth and Lance) and now in your amazing specialty follow up care with Dr. Kubas and team, our V.I.P. (aka very important poodle) is the healthiest he’s been in years! We could not be more impressed with the excellent quality of care, compassion, and timely communication you continue to provide to our family. We appreciate you ALL and wishing you all a happy holiday season! We will pay your kindness forward, this is our promise.

I needed to have my fur baby Bella evaluated last night. She was sneezing and lethargic. Top notch service the moment we walked through the door. My little girl was check out throughly and I was assured that she just had a cold. I was instructed to watch over heer and to return if she got worse. Was relieved that it wS serious. Thankyo all for your kindness and compassion

The internal medicine team is caring and dedicated. They worked with two of our terminal cats to give us as much time as possible with them. They always spoiled our boys with love and treats during each visit.

My 10 year old large breed dog, Bear had vomited a few times and lost his appetite. I tried to entice him with some of his favorite treats but was unable to get him to eat a normal portion of dog food for several days. In addition, his urine was quite concentrated so we went to our regular vet for an urgent care appointment. Bear’s temperament and behavior otherwise was normal. He was active and happy so I thought I was being overly cautious. While the physical exam went well his blood work came back with high levels of liver enzymes, essentially indicating Bear’s liver was failing.
We were instructed to urgently bring Bear to OSVS and while he was taken in quickly, I was told it might be hours before we hear anything and I should go home by a technician. Of course that was the last thing we wanted to do or hear and based on the wide spectrum of reviews I was a bit concerned.
Within an hour I received a call from a doctor updating me on Bear’s condition and what the plan was for the next day. The doctor shared his vitals were stable and while his liver enzymes and a few other metics were high likely the dog was not yet at liver failure. Bear was still able to produce sugars and proteins. Additional testing and ultra sound would be preformed. She was caring and clear in her communication.
The next day Dr. Mark Vardanega was assigned to Bear and gave us a full update on his condition, ultra sound results, and bloodwork. He was able to rule out lepto, cancer, or a tumor but unfortunately it was likely Bear was exposed to an unknown toxin or had an infection. He felt with time and care he could get better as his liver suffered some damage but was not in failure. Dr. Mark Vardanega made time for us to visit, spoke to us in person, and called daily with updates on Bear. He explained the treatment plan clearly and offered advise. He was Bear’s doctor for the duration of his 4 day stay and truly made a horrible situation tolerable. Bear is now home continuing his recovery. I would highly recommend Dr. Mark Vardanega of OSVS and hope he gets to see a healthy and happy Bear one day in the near future!
OSVS is an emergency animal hospital and while it can be overwhelming to enter the facility with a sick pet it is unfortunate there are so many negative reviews. Some people comment on the cost or are offended by the doctors providing updated estimates, but this is simply them being a responsible business.
Wanted to share our positive experience to ease the minds of those that may be in need of emergency vet services currently. I am almost certain my experience was shaped by the compassionate care offer by Dr. Mark Vardanega.

My mom already wrote a review of our experience but this place deserves more then 5 stars. My family found out very suddenly that our Shay had a fatal tumor. We thought we had the weekend with her but after it took a turn for the worse and she was hurting we had to bring her to Ocean State Emergency to say goodbye. The staff there and the vet that did the procedure were all so kind and caring and helpful. They had an outdoor private area that was such a beautiful spot to say good bye to our girl. Not only did we get a beautiful urn, but paw prints, flower seeds, a card, and a call with condolences from staff. I will never be bringing my fur babies to any other vet. Thank you guys for what you do. ❤️ RIP Shay. ❤️

This hospital went above and beyond my expectations. The place was very clean and they took such great care of my sick dog. I will definitely drive the hour it took me to get there again. I highly recommend this hospital

Without their help, my amazing rescue dog mouse would have died. Within the span of about 30 minutes, I was able to drive there, get her checked in, and had a good idea as to what was wrong with her. I’ll be the first to say they are very expensive and it’s a factor you need to consider. That being said, I know mouse was in great hands and had an operation done within the span of a couple of hours. It boils down to this i think. When you have an emergency with your pet, these are the people to take them to.

These people are the best of the best, especially Dr. Sweet and all the AMAZING vet techs. My regular vet referred us here when my young energetic pup Verona became lame in her back legs, and our best hope to improve her quality of life was a TPLO. I truly cannot put into words how amazing Dr. Sweet is, and I am so grateful to him and all the vet techs for taking such good care of my girl.
Dr. Sweet called me right after surgery to let me know how she was, and spent a great deal of time with me in-person making sure I knew exactly how to take care of her post-op. Everyone is always so amazing, even in the midst of a pandemic, our follow-up x-ray appointment went smoothly, and the vet techs (my heroes) just rock.
These folks never see pets or people at their best--The puppies that come to see them are ill or injured, and the people that come to see them are scared and confused. And these amazing people show up every day with such empathy, grace, professionalism and compassion. Thank you, so SO much.

Me and my fiance´ went out for a few hrs in our boat, we came home to seeing a living room full of my medication pills spread all over, my pitbull got into my purse and into another makeup bag inside(the purse was up high), needless to say, our 1 1/2 yr old Brindle Pitbull had overdosed on four different types of medications, we could tell that he had just recently ingested them but as the minutes had passed, he became very lathargic, we scooped him up and within 15 minutes were at Ocean State Vet Hospital. I ran in carrying my baby boy, and was immediately greeted by the receptionist and a tech who asked what was wrong, I told them he overdosed on my medication, as soon as I said that, the tech scooped him from my arms and rushed him into the back, at this point he was barely conscious. I started crying and the receptionist comforted me and helped me fill out the paperwork. They gave our boy a shot to make him throw up, which didn't work, so they put a tube down his throat and fed him charcoal. Our bill came to a little over $400, which we didnt have, so the receptionist offered the Care Credit Program, which we applied for and were approved for a $1200 limit. We were there for about an hour and a half, when our boy came walking out from the back, tail wagging and all! I couldn't believe it, I thought for sure we were going to be in for bad news while we sat there waiting. There's no price I wouldn't pay to save my baby boy and the care he recieved with such urgency was just wonderful! I can't thank them enough for saving my baby! I highly recommend them! And Reese thanks them too!😊💙🐶

The quality of care provided to my dog 5 stars. The doctors and initial intake people 5 stars. Billing department 1 star.
My dog was brought in as a referral from my vet. One of her lungs were collapsed and there was a spot on the x-rays that was concerning. While she was being treated I was given detailed information and updated. I even got a photos of her emailed.
The news was not as I hoped and the hard decision was made. They were very accommodating as I had tested positive for Covid but we could see her outside to say goodbye. We made the trip and the dr was very patient giving us time. We timely receive her paw print.
At all time everyone told us the deposit was not used and I would be getting a large refund. When I got my credit card statement (7 weeks after her passing) it was not only for the deposit but $4 more than authorized. I never receive any bill. I had to call for them to email it to me. The bill was for almost $1000 less then the deposit. Having seeing the itemized bill 7 weeks later made me breakdown knowing all that she went through. The bill itself seemed reasonably priced. I had to wait for a call from billing to explain the discrepancy. The response was that they waited 29 days to issue a refund because they were short staffed. Unacceptable. I paid my bill before receiving any services. There is no reason for me to have to relive the pain because you were short staffed. Interesting enough the refund did not include the extra $4 they overcharged. If they had timely refunded I would not have even cared about the bill. To make me relive the pain is not good practice.
You must do better. It’s not only about care of pets but care of their humans.

I can't say enough about the care that our dog Mollie received at Ocean State. Dr. Bushnell was the most compassionate, caring vet I have ever met. She called us everyday to give us updates, sometimes twice daily and always gave us all the information we asked for. The staff was top notch including send me daily emails with morning updates and pictures to make sure that we stayed connected with our pet that we were so worried about and missed so much. I would not hesitate to recommend them they are wonderful. Thank you

My elderly dog was scheduled to cross the rainbow bridge on a Monday at our regular vet but after a difficult start to the weekend, I knew the time had come. I brought him to OSVS on a Saturday afternoon after calling ahead to explain (for euthanasia services, you do not pay for an emergency visit, just the euthanasia and aftercare services). I was treated with much respect and compassion. They have an outdoor garden area with a small pond where you can have the procedure happen. It was very serene and private. The vet was exceptional, explaining each step and advising what was happening. The most difficult experience I have ever been through was made just a little bit easier because of the wonderful staff at OSVS.

My dog was misdiagnosed by three different Vets before visiting OSVS and only after 3 weeks of treatment he is doing much better! Thanks to Dr. Aubin! Getting the initial appointment was painless and quick. People here is very kind and caring, and staff and doctors are punctual and respectful of your time which is very much appreciated. Facilities are nice, clean and well organized. Costs were very reasonable.

Needed emergency vet service while traveling. Excellent service provided. They assured me I could bring my pet in and receive urgent emergency care. The reception staff were responsive, comforting, and attentive. Emergency vet triaged my pet in quick and effective manner with clear overview of why, what, and how to proceed. Thankfully, my pet is happy and healthy again now!

Staff was very friendly and empathetic. Came in today with an injured bird from our store and although the main exotic animal vet was fully booked and busy, they still did their best to examine and diagnose the lil guy. One of the technicians also made sure I fully understood how to administer and measure the parakeets medicine so I could inform my other co workers. He was very sweet and kind, wish I got his name.

I can't tell you just how awesome this place is. From regular care to emergency care, they really treat your pet with the utmost care. It may take me 45 minutes to get here but it's so worth it. Very informative very thorough and upfront with you. This is the fourth time I've had to be up here with my dogs on an emergency basis. I wasn't even in the door 30 seconds and they already took her in, my bailey Marie that is. Highly recommend osvs if you want top notch care.

Based on the reviews, I was extremely hesitant to take my rabbit here when she suddenly became lethargic and unresponsive. But it was after hours and literally my only option. My rabbit unfortunately ended up passing away at the hospital, but I think that would have happened regardless of whether I took her there.
From my personal experience, I will give this place 5 stars. From the moment I walked in they treated my rabbits situation with urgency, and compassion. I will say that I was initially unsettled by the skirting around prices of potential procedures, but I walked out of there only paying $56, and that was for the cremation and box.
This was a very hard day for me, and it would have been made so much worse if I walked out owing a ton of money. I know it's kind of bare minimum of them to not overcharge me when they didn't technically do anything to help her, but I feel like that sort of thing is rare these days. Thank you Ocean State Veterinary Hospital

I had to come here after my primary vet was unable to see my dog for an emergency visit. I could not believe how busy they were and yet every animal that came through that door was immediately tended to. Within 10-15 minutes the vet had seen my girl and the tech had shared their synopsis with me. The wait to actually see the doctor and get discharged took hours (somewhat expected), but I am thankful that they made sure that all animals were tended to immediately. Days later my dogs symptoms began to shift. I called my primary vet and they were of no help again, at all, so I called Ocean State. They offered me the availability of an appointment that day but when I mentioned not wanting to have thousands of dollars in vet bills if this was something that could subside on it's own, they gave me suggestions over the phone, what to keep an eye on, and a timeline of when I should become concerned with her gastro issues. For me, I appreciate a vet that cares for the animals and it's owner. And the fact that this place is insanely busy and they did their best to accommodate both the pet and the owner was appreciated.

Today May 20 2022 11:26 we had to put my dog to sleep we were devastated and I must say they were very compassionate we had him for 16 years so it was extremely hard on us all especially my daughters who was 7 when we got him 💔but I must say they made this process less stressful because they were very understanding with us we were extremely emotional thank you so much for taking your time with us and our fur baby 🐾❤️😭 thank you all from the receptionist to the Dr you all are amazing his bless 🙏🏼
Matt Hapeman
This place is hard. The work they do is hard, and it's hard to visit and see all the sick and injured animals coming and going. But their compassion, at least as far as we saw, was exemplary and unwavering. They took care of our little guy much more quickly than we could have thought, and got him back in shape, all while offering us nothing but friendly warmth. It's not a place that you want to have to go to, but I can't imagine how they could do better than what we saw them do.

The staff at OSVS has been so wonderful, especially during the COVID pandemic. They handled my dog wonderfully and have always been very kind and helpful towards me. For 2 years now my dog has gone undiagnosed and Dr. Monhait in the Internal Medicine department is helping to change that. I'm so grateful to all the staff members who have dealt with my dog and I. Keep up the amazing work! Phantom says "thank you" for being so awesome!

I was having trouble getting my refill for my Guinea girl Scarlett and a woman at the front desk name Kaylin and she went and talked to the doctor for me she got the refill I need l and when I went in to pick it up she was there with a smile and as sweet and as kind as can be. So I would like to say thank you again kaelyn

I want to summarize the review as it was a complex case and it’s impossible to do in short form. Please read below for more detail. 1) They saved my dogs life. 2) The entire staff was amazing, empathetic and pragmatic. 3) There have been a lot of negative reviews due to cost. The cost WAS high, but if it was a human in the ICU for 7 nights 8 days I assure you it would be double. The costs are commensurate with the services. 4) Members of the staff went far above the call of duty for us and our dog. 5) GET YOUR ANIMALS VACCINATED FOR LEPTOSPIROSIS!!
My puppy contracted a very aggressive form of Leptospirosis with a very low survival rate. We admitted her on a Sunday before we knew what was wrong and she was just mildly sick. They were clear on the costs and gave us a deposit needed. I admit at first, I was taken back. We automatically think a hospital treats first worries about money last. But it is important to them that the consumer makes an informed decision. It is also important to remember that unlike state hospitals for humans there are no subsidies, fundraising drives or other handouts for Vets. As a business owner I know how much it costs to keep the doors open, and it's not cheap. Ask yourself if you can pay 30+ salaries, payroll tax, purchase millions of dollars of diagnostic equipment, electric bills and overhead before you complain about medical costs for animals. Pet owners have a responsibility to be fiscally responsible for their care and/or purchase the right insurance. While we were still shopping for insurance and did not have it, thus absorbed the entire cost on our own; we realized it was our duty. It was also our CHOICE. They do not judge owners and are very clear, particularly once our dog turned for the worse that there might be a massive cost with a negative outcome. Some people might not want to hear that, but I personally prefer to be informed.
The care was second to none. Dr. Davis and the other covering docs were unbelievable. They cried with us when our puppy was comatose and they cried happy tears with us when we finally got her out. The clinical aspects of this case are complex and it would take 10 pages to explain. So I will summarize. Our dog can’t talk, so we had to guess and yes we had to pay for tests that had no answers as a process of elimination. None of these tests were egregious, they all made sense to get to an answer and trust me when I said I triple checked with top human doctors. We also had to decide our course of action because some labs (PCR’s) take 2-4 days and our dog didn’t have that time. Unlike many docs who get protective or an ego, Dr. Davis was unbelievably open to working as a team. I had many friends and clients who are human doctors that pitched in with info. Dr. Davis also stayed HOURS after her shift to research and collaborate with their specialists. She was determined to win! Things got worse before they got better. We visited 2x a day for hours and the staff was amazingly accommodating and great at communicating what was happening. I was there for easily 50 hours and witnessed nothing but love for animals. 4 days in our pup rounded the corner and there was hope she’d pull through. Sure enough, slowly but surely, she came around. Throughout the whole process we would come in to find toys, treats and blankets that staff bought OUT OF POCKET because they fell in love with her. The normal greeting was a hug and despite so much heartache we found a beautiful part of humanity.
8 days later we finally took our Stella home. We are continuing auxiliary care there and could not be happier. And yes, as you can imagine the bill after 8 days was no small bill. However as someone who broke his neck and knows medical costs first hand, it was entirely in line with the care we received. The gratitude we have in our hearts is infinite.
Thank you to everyone at Ocean State. A special thanks to Dr. Davis, Lucrecia, and the fantastic front of the house staff. We almost lost our puppy at 5 months old, now she has a second chance at her entire life; we will never forget.

I seriously had to laugh at the reviews being left by people. My cat had a medical emergency and I was referred to this hospital from my vet in ATTLEBORO ( attleboro veterinary clinic)
As soon as I walked in they took my cat in right away ( under 1 min) as I filled out the paperwork. They were amazing with my cat Brooklyn and thankfully he was ok . I paid the bill and left they were absolutely amazing and I would definitely recommend this place to anyone ( I already have ) note; it's funny when people always talk about having to pay the vet as if places are supposed to work for free
I have never walked into a vets office expecting the staff to provide medical care for free .

This past summer, my 9-month old standard poodle puppy slurped down an entire sock like a noodle. I tried to get him to throw it up but couldn't, so rushed him to OSVS at 11pm. EVERYONE, from the receptionists to the tech staff to the vet, was wonderfully caring and helpful. The vet induced vomiting by placing a substance in his eyes. And, voila!, the sock! Thank goodness! My thanks to OSVS for their excellent care. Bless you all. ❤️🐩

My 12 year old cat, Sully, had a rough 3 weeks. I went to an emergency ER here in Mass where he was diagnosed with a URI, we treated it with antibiotics. 2 weeks later he was presenting the same signs as the URI. Took him to a regularly scheduled appointment and had an xray, bloodwork… To the tune of $775. At the end of the visit I was told he needs a cardiologist (who is scheduling out till Dec) and no explanation for the retching of mucus. She simply said it must be residual from the URI. Got Sully home and he progressively declined, up all night with him. Called 6+ emergency 24/7 hospitals here in Mass. All were at capacity and couldn’t take him. I used to live in RI and decided to call Ocean State. 6am we were on our way. What a professional, kind and caring staff. Once I spoke with Dr Ross, I knew we were in the right place. The comfort and peace provided by her professionalism, knowledge and concern… Priceless! He is in good hands!! Very grateful to have made that trip

They're very nice here. Giving them 3 stars only because I had called ahead to bring my ferret in as I had never been there before. It took 3-4 hours just to get my ferret a blood test and a diagnosis when every other vet I've been to it only takes about 45 minutes. I understand it's busy here but they need to let you know how long it'll take!

Our puppy suffered a dog bite to his neck and we had to bring him in urgently to be evaluated. Staff was wonderful and took him back to the veterinarian immediately to get checked out. After about an hour we were spoken to by the veterinarian (dr. Stone, I believe) and we were updated thoroughly on the plan of care. We were encouraged to leave our pup at the hospital overnight so he could be monitored and re-evaluated in the morning by the surgical team. The veterinarian promised to call us before she left for the night to provide another update, which she did. I was super grateful and appreciative that she took the time to call us. They were very busy that night and I would’ve completely understood if she didn’t call, so that meant a lot. In the morning we received a call from Dr. Coronado who would be re-assessing Vinny’s wound. Dr. Coronado was so wonderful! He took the time to explain everything in detail and didn’t rush his explanation. Super thorough and genuine. After the washout and drain was placed, Dr. Coronado called again and provided another update. Such a great experience with such an unfortunate event. Highly recommend Ocean State for anyone’s pet emergencies!

I have taken both cats here in emergency situations (one for an allergic reaction and one for eating a piece of an exercise mat) and this place was absolutely wonderful. They took excellent care of my kitties with an impressive amount of communication and excellent bedside manner. All three doctors I worked with were wonderful. One of my cats had to have surgery and stay two nights, and the staff even took the time to email us reassuring photos of her each morning. Staff are experienced and top notch, and the place runs smoothly despite being a busy emergency room. Every pet is treated with love!

I don't often write reviews but fell compelled to write one tonight. My small dog swallowed a portion of a bully stick which concerned me. I was advised to take her in so that she could be induced to vomit it up to avoid a potential obstruction. After being there for about an hour the Dr felt confident that she would just digest it without having to put her through vomiting. I was shocked to learn that I didn't owe anything on my way out. I have been here numerous times with former pets and have never had a bad experience. Now, I have peace of mind that my dog is ok, am very happy that my dog didn't have to get stressed with vomiting and am grateful that this did not result in a charge. Thank you!

OSVS has always been "right on" for our family of dogs. We have had many dogs pass through the doors of OSVS and they have been treated promptly along with receiving the very best care. We have also had end of life decisions contemplated through our discussions with OSVS and they have provided compassionate realistic expectations to assist us in our decision. OSVS also has full emergency capabilities along with the technology and equipment needed to appropriately diagnose and recommend treatment options. The specialists in the group are awesome as well. We have utilized most of them over the years.
I have seen reviews complaining about the cost of services at OSVS. It is expensive to provide the level of care that OSVS provides. Owning a pet can be very costly as everyone knows and I personally am willing to pay for the quality of services received at OSVS. We have also visited veterinary emergency hospitals in VT. We were not able to receive all of the services that OSVS provides as they did not have the appropriate equipment. In one instance our dog had to be transferred from VT to OSVS. So OSVS gets 5 stars from our family and we are thankful that we have them!

I cant say enough about Ocean State. They have helped my dog on numerous occasions and while very pricey they do quality work and are very good in keeping the pet owner updated. I love the fact that they send you a picture daily of your pet when they are admitted it really helps bring you piece of mind. Thank you for all you do! Now the only negative thing i have to say is that i do not agree with how they refund deposits.. You have to pay upfront but when it comes time for a return of the rest of the deposit if you paid cash you have to wait and have a check mailed to you. That should be changed we should not have to wait for a return. You guys still get 5 stars though! Thanks again.

I’m not a reviewer type - but, after bring my 1yr old lab here for a foreign body obstruction, I feel like it’s a must. He was vomiting for 3 days, then began having blood in his stool. We went to our vet, then we’re referred over to ocean state. It was Christmas weekend, they were the only ER with a surgeon on Xmas eve. This was are only option. So we bring him in, a technician quickly triages him, takes him back and begins an IV and fluids. There slammed, 4hr wait to see the doctor. Tech comes back out like an hour later, updates us, vitals are stable he’s cozy back there. If we want, we can go home. (He was staying overnight regardless). We go home. It’s getting late, so i call for an update, doctor is busy, she will call me back. Which she did within an hour. We talked our plan out, fluids, labs, reassess. call the next morning, get an update and await a returned phone call from the doctor, in the meantime i received three photos of my handsome boy. doctor called me, updated me, my dog was able to vomit the rock up and not have surgery. I was beyond happy. My boy was home for Christmas.
Yes, it was an expensive visit but having a pet can be expensive and you have to be prepared for the unexpected.
- a lot of negative comments here, which after my dog was already they’re unfortunately i read them and was nervous. But, its just like a human hospital. These people are working hard to save our pets. Be kinda, have patience and trust them.
We thank you for taking the best care of our boy.
- as an ER Nurse, i understand the challenge. we appreciate you.

I brought my rabbit to their emergency room. I had to leave her because she had a nasty infection. We received regular updates from the vet and were explained everything that was happening. The staff was courteous and genuinely seem to care. My furry friend didn't make it but I feel the staff did everything they could to save her. Thank you so much for caring during such a difficult time!

I am beyond grateful and so thankful that I took my 11 year old bunny Mr. Nibbles here. Every animal that came through that door was number 1 priority. They have an astounding staff to client ratio. My bunny love was cared for just like one of their own pets. His vet was extremely thorough, very informative and oh so patient. I cannot express how much I appreciate everything the doc and staff did yesterday for him.

I had to make the worst decision of my life on Friday to end my best friends suffering. Ocean state vet took us immediately, they didn't try to get me to spend money on unnecessary treatments. They respected my wishes and didn't make him or I suffer, it was done quickly with great care. They let me choose when the time was right. After he slipped into a peaceful forever sleep, his body was placed in a beautiful white box with flowers. I'm forever grateful I brought him here for his final voyage. Tha k you. Brushcis family

This is the last place anyone wants to be with their beloved fur-baby, and yet my sweet boy and I are so happy they are around. From the time I called them and needed their help until the moment I picked him up (and the many tearful check up calls in between) I was treated with kindness and compassion. They made a truly horrible experience better and I could feel they loved my pup as though he was their own. Kate at reception was very sweet and Dr. Rodriguez was a blessing. Devon (who must practically live there as he was there when I dropped off my baby as well as the next day when I picked him up) was also a great guy who took so much time to explain everything to us and made sure I got to give my pup a hug before leaving for the night... Honestly I was so stressed these are the names of people that stuck out to me, but I know there were many more that I didn't get to meet or thank, and others (I'm so sorry) that I can't remember their names. In the nicest way possible I hope we don't have to come back to Ocean State but if we do I know we are in the best care. From the bottom of my heart thank you to the entire staff ❤ You guys are heros.

Our experience was exceptional! Even though we had to put our little kitten, Bandit, down; Dr Weymouth was great advising us of our options. She was patient when it came time to make the decision to euthanize him. The front desk staff was excellent as well. Very compassionate and caring. I would highly recommend Ocean State Bet Hospital to anyone.

We had an appt. to make arrangements for cremation for our beloved Kaylee who had passed the night before. I would like to recognize the concierge Beth who helped us. She was caring and compassionate during such a difficult time for us. She shed some tears with us, gave a hug and also planted a kiss on my beautiful Kaylee's face. It was so heart warming and beautiful at the same time. She definitely made my experience a good one during a difficult time. She is a blessing to your facitlity and please let her know how much we appreciated her. We will never forget her for taking such good care of my special little girl we shared our life with for almost 17 years.

Our dog Andie was very sick, lethargic and we were referred by our main Vet. Upon arrival, the staff was INCREDIBLY friendly, kind, and professional. You could tell how busy they were but they still took the time to take Andie on in. From there, it only got better. The professionalism, expertise, and bedside manner is impeccable here. Andie was taken in for a few nights, her issue was identified and treated and we were kept in the know on a daily basis with an email discussing how she was overnight and a picture of her.
Lots of reviews talk about the cost-yes it's expensive. Unfortunately, lots of things in this world medically related usually are. I wish it were different but that's what you get living in the U.S. While I do not relish being on the hook for a good chunk of change, I was able to put it on an in house credit card and pay off in time. It's hard to put a price on a member of the family-but I get it.
Special shout out to Dr. Ann Klocke for her honesty, good heart, expertise and kindness. After leaving the first day, having a ton of confidence in the care we knew Andie would receive was comforting. While I hope not to be back here for an emergency, I cannot recommend Ocean State Emergency Vet enough. So happy to have our sweet girl back home again.

Took my dog Happy at this hospital recently when his eye had ruptured from a corneal ulcer. I for sure thought I was gonna lose him because he got to a point where he did not want to eat, drink, and get up to move around for hours and was not responding to his name. He was in a lot of distress. I must say the staff here were very kind and compassionate. Even sent me a photo of my dog along with an update. The doctor was great too. She was very thorough when giving me details on my dog's condition. She and along everyone else took great care of my baby and he is doing a whole lot better and is right back to his usual self. I must also say prices are expensive but probably shouldn't be too surprised since it was an emergency visit. I felt like it was worth it regardless because of how awesome these people treated my dog. These people were life savers and I will use this hospital again in the future if I absolutely have to.

Thank God for these people! My dog was very sick and I was terrified. I had to bring her in at 5:30 am on a Sunday because her regular vet is closed on Sundays. Every person I dealt with from the receptionist, to the vet techs, to the doctors, were incredible. They even sent me photos of her during her stay so I could see her because people aren't allowed in right now due to covid. I think they do allow you in for special circumstances though. I couldn't believe how friendly and knowledgeable everyone was. I truly felt like my baby girl was in safe and capable hands. That is so important when you are scared because you have to leave your dog with people who you don't know. They called me several times to keep me updated on her status and made me feel like they were treating her as a priority. I am so grateful for the care she received. I would absolutely go back here should we need emergency care ever again in the future. Her doctor was named Dr Sun and I will never forget how wonderful she was to my baby!

Super professional and caring staff. Our late-night visit went very well, partially thanks to the kindness and skilled care of the doctor and vet techs here. Although it was 3 am, they took the time to give us detailed updates when requested, and thoroughly explained everything they were doing for our cat, why they were doing it, and were up front about the costs (which I will note are exactly what you should expect from any sort of pet emergency room and hospital). I am confident using this hospital for any future emergencies.

I am really grateful for Ocean State!!!....I called them about my rabbit who was in GI stasis which can be deadly and they took me right away when no one else would and within a day my rabbit started feeling better!!

My cat became sick very suddenly on Saturday. I took her to OSV. They diagnosed her very quickly and unfortunately she had to be put to sleep. Everyone from the receptionist to the vet tech to the veterinarian herself were so very kind. Doctor Youngblood is one of the sweetest, kindest, most compassionate people I have ever met. She made a horrible situation bearable and did it with so much love and compassion . I'm so grateful that my family, cat, and I were treated so well and with so much respect.

We were here earlier today with a rat with a ruptured tumour. Doctor we saw was super nice, is knowledgeable about rats and didn’t seem rushed despite a large crowd. They were able to stabilise our pet until we can get to our vets. Wait is extremely long but it’s an emergency exotic vet so to be expected. Highly recommend.

I was quite frightened because my dog was so sick and it had happened so quickly. The staff, including the veterinarians themselves, not only took great care of my dog but also took great care of me with frequent detailed communication. I could NOT be more grateful. Thank you.

I had to bring my cat here over this past weekend due to him eating a yellow lily. My cat had to stay there for a few days and we had a great experience with the doctors, techs, and reception. Everyone was extremely nice. The doctors always called with an update in a timely manner. The techs emailed me every morning with an update and a picture of my cat in hospital. I would highly recommend this facility to anyone. Although expensive (to be expected of ER), the price was not as bad as I had expected for two over nights there. Thank you OSVS staff for taking good care of my cat!

Our 13 yr old dachshund, Latte was put to sleep on Monday at OSVS. She had suffered a traumatic injury that left her paralyzed. When we brought her in on Sunday, the tech that took her from the car was so kind (I am sorry I don't remember her name) and knew how upset we were. She was honest and told us to hang in there but it may be a few hours before we heard anything. When Dr. Villanueva called she was honest with the condition of Latte and said that they would keep her for pain management and I would hear from the neurologist.
The neurologist, Dr. Marini called the next morning and spent so much time on the phone with me going through Latte's injury, treatments and prognosis.
We felt her quality of life wasn't going to be the same so we made the difficult decision to put her to sleep. Given COVID we (4 of us) couldn't go inside, so we were in the garden at the koi pond to say our last goodbyes (such a pretty setting and Latte was in her element listening to the birds and spotting the chipmunks) Tori (tech) brought Latte out to us and then Dr. Marini explained the process and didn't do anything until we were ready. They made us feel like we were the only patients at OSVS.
I most appreciate how kind everyone was to us...never once did I feel like they were trying to push treatments for money. Dr. Marini's caring, calm and reassuring demeanor helped us make the right decision for our girl.
I also want to thank Elizabeth M for her help in answering some questions for us when I couldn't get in touch with anyone. Thank you Ocean State for showing such compassion to Latte and her humans. :)

Ocean State Vet has been a light of compassion during a dark, difficult time.
Three weeks ago, my elderly sugar glider had a sudden decline in health late at night. I brought her to Ocean State Vet and they took us right in. After giving her some time to see if she would stabilize with oxygen, they gave me the news no pet owner wants to hear: that her prognosis was poor and they recommended euthanasia. The vet still provided me with a couple options and were patient in giving me some space and time to accept the realization that I needed to make the difficult decision so my baby would not suffer. They let me spend some time with her before they put her to sleep. From the receptionists to the veterinarian, everyone on the staff was so patient, helpful, and compassionate.
I was (understandably) very tearful at the time, and I’m sure some vets would take advantage of that and put myself and my sugar glider through much suffering (physically, emotionally, financially) to make money. This was not at all the case with Ocean State, they were honest in their medical opinion, and very reasonable in cost which was a pleasant surprise and a relief, especially in dealing with an exotic animal late at night.
The other week, I went to pick up my baby’s ashes. They were ready in the expected time frame that they gave me. Again, I was greeted by compassionate staff. It was very busy, but the receptionist still took the time to came around the counter to give her condolences and personally hand me the bag containing my baby’s ashes. Final gift, who does the cremation services, provided such a wonderful, thoughtful remembrance bag that was above and beyond. I really did not expect it. I’m not even sure how to put it into words other than it really touched my heart and made me feel as good as someone can in grieving the loss of their pet.
I highly recommend Ocean State Vet to address your pet’s needs, and provide compassionate, quality care, even during times of emergency.

This hospital saved my puppy’s life. It’s really that simple. I purchased a puppy and within a few days realized he had a typically fatal disease for a dog of his size and age. The staff at Ocean State veterinary clinic were able to therapeutically treat my dog over 12 days, which allowed him to ultimately survive a terrible virus. Most particularly, Dr Sun was an attentive and never gave up on my dog despite a series of setbacks that may have given pause to others. She’s an asset to the hospital and any animal that requires her care. The other doctors that took care of the puppy we’re FANTASTIC and acted with the required urgency. And of course, this all occurred during the pandemic and despite some of the frustrations with not being able to advocate for my puppy face to face, I felt ocean state made a valiant effort to always keep me updated and have a line of communication open both with doctors and veterinary technicians. I’ve taken prior pets to some of the best facilities in the Boston area and I can tell you ocean state by far was my best experience hands down. I just could never thank them enough for their good work.
Jody Orlando
Definitely changed my mind about them! I had a situation about 6 or 7 years ago that did not go well here, and I was not happy with them AT ALL. Well, my new puppy is a bit of a hoover and we have been here several times in the last two years.... they have been amazing every time. I really appreciate all their help and their service and they are very good to my dog!
Bridget McElhaney
They saved our dog’s life. She was given state of the art care, loved, and treated like she was their own. We even received email updates with pictures. Our questions were answered openly, honestly, patiently, and without judgement. The phone answering system isn’t always the greatest and prices can be really high. We were given a detailed list of the costs. The staff is truly wonderful. They are caring, sympathetic, honest, and empathetic. The vet even called to follow up to see how our dog was doing and if she could answer any other questions. Highly recommend.
Bobbi Siriois
Dr. Alexander the oncologist was very comforting when we had our beloved Lucy euthanized today they did a follow,up call to see how everything was and explain any concerns I had they let me stay as long as I needed even the staff was caring they were very sympathetic thank you Ocean State vet for making my Lucy's last day peaceful. They allowed me some private time with her. Although I am heartbroken and this is a very difficult time right now I felt comfortable knowing my dog is in good hands and at peace.

My cat was in severe distress on Memorial Day weekend. I tried to get her into a few closer 24-hr vets, but Ocean State was the only one that would accept her. Because her condition wasn't immediately life-threatening, she had to wait a few hours, but they let me know that up front. Every promise they made was fulfilled, and the people I talked to were very courteous and genuine. Thank you so much!
Pompom Mania
They have a great cardiologist, Dr Kane. His Knowledgeable, professional, and kind attitude really was everything with a diagnosis that was not easy to hear. Same with Christine, I really enjoyed her professionalism and happy nature. They both took the time to talk to me about my pet's condition. However, every time I have been there, for some reason I get the same dark curly hair receptionist and her attitude is always so negative. She always seems very annoyed for some reason and it always leaves me wondering why. My last bill was about $800 and while $10 or $800 shouldn't affect the way I am being treated, maybe the fact that I have a very sick pet should? I feel like a little kindness would go a long way. It won't prevent me from consulting with Dr Kane though, I do recommend him as a cardiologist.

My 13 year old chihuahua collapsed in February 2020. We rushed him in and he was immediately seen by their doctors. We were told he had a heart condition and were given a plan to manage it. Over the next 6 months we made a few scheduled visits and 2 more emergency trips. Through it all, the doctors here were caring and patient when explaining our options. When it came time to say goodbye to our little guy, the folks here were so kind and so supportive. While the services here are expensive, they explain all of the pricing up front and your options to reduce costs. I highly recommend this place!
Mary Johnston
I had to rush our dog Jackson there during the night, as he became in critical condition. The staff and vet were very understanding, patient and compassionate throughout this traumatic event. Even though we found out he was terminal, they helped us with decision options and were respectful when difficult decisions were made. They were accommodating afterward and offered us some private time with our beloved dog. I also know they treated my son's dog two weeks ago who developed cancer and need treatment. I would recommend them highly.

I have visited Ocean State Veterinary Specialists numerous times over the years and have always found them to be reasonable and honest.... tonight I was in a bit of a panic, my bulldog is 10 days post knee and ACL surgery and she started to have significant swelling. I called to see if I should bring her in for an emergency.. the receptionist was exceptionally friendly, she took all my information and went to speak to the doctors. She came back and said good news, I didn’t need to panic, she told me what I could do to help the swelling and if it still was there Monday to call my vet. She told me what to look for that would be considered an emergency incase anything changed over night / into tomorrow before my vet opened and needed to be seen. She then proceeded to tell me she worked till 1:30am if I needed to call back for anything else to feel free, but to try to get some rest that I was doing everything right... she has no idea how much that phone call meant to me. I’m a hypochondriac (especially when it comes to my fur my babies) and her kindness, especially during this time of craziness, meant so much to me.

I had to take my dog to this ER hospital this morning because he was having abnormal breathing. I called earlier and the person who answered the phone was very understanding, and helpful. I had to wait a little longer for the vet to examine my dog, but it was worth the wait. Dr Pancoast was excellent. She explained to me the options to find out what was wrong with him. After reviewing his x rays she went over her suggestions and was very understanding of my decision as far as treatment. I’m hoping that my dog gets better soon. I was very satisfied with the hospital and their care. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. Thanks!

I just left this place a few hours ago. My cat was old, dealing with many health issues. To the point, where I believe that he needed to be euthanized.
While I was there? The staff, got to me, immediately. They were willing to listen, throughly compassionate, really understanding, and truthfully helpful throughout my ordeal. Even though I had to euthanize my little friend. I am really thankful for these people! They were Awesome! Thank you very much, OSVS, never change the way you deal with your customers. Whether I get another furry friend or not? You are my human friends. Thank You Very Much!

Revision of a previous review:
Staff is super nice and their exotics department is wonderful. Their ER can be quite aggravating however. It’s too bad they don’t have more staff to help with the long wait times. If you go to the ER (especially with an animal that’s not a dog or cat) you are going to be waiting a very long time. I don’t mind waiting, but communication is key instead of letting someone just sit and ignore them. It is absolutely heartbreaking to sit useless and watch your feathered/furry child suffer while not one person at the emergency animal hospital helped for hours. Another aggravation is how expensive it is just to walk through the door. In the past I have paid $290 just to walk in the door with a bird and have a physical assessment only.
This is not to say the staff doesn’t work hard and care for their jobs but just to share common issues people have here. As previously stated, almost everyone I’ve ever come into contact with at this facility is very nice and knowledgeable. Once in their hands, your pets are in good hands (especially if they’re an exotic animal being seen by that department).

We came at midnight with a kitty who got into some adhd medication. Not only was the night staff super helpful but they were also kind, patient, calm, and answered any and all questions new cat owners might have at the first pet medical emergency visit. We were given the option to have them call us to approve any procedures necessary or to just give them the go ahead, we opted to have them do whatever means necessary to make sure our cat came out of it in the best shape possible, even still they called and updated us every step of the way. While some reviews here may think that they’re money hungry I think they miss the point that being a vet requires a lot more research because no animal is the same and it’s not like your pet can talk to the doctor and explain what’s going on. Tests are necessary, running those tests cost money. Be understanding and kind to the vet techs, doctors, front desk employees. They’re trying as hard as they can to keep your pet safe, healthy, and alive. Absolutely recommend this hospital, special shout out to Dr. Herschler - you were amazing.

First the good and then the bad. They saved my 18 year old Tuxedo cat who was having some severe internal bleeding as a side effect to the anesthesia at my regular vet after getting a tooth pulled. We raced him to Ocean State Veterinary Specialists where he had an overnight stay. Whatever they did worked. Three weeks later he's fine and loudly purring in my lap right now as I write this. Thank you! I will be forever grateful!!!! Now the bad: They have the worst convoluted way to check in your pet. Sit in the parking lot. Call a phone number and then work your way through confusing recorded prompts as your pet sits in your car during an emergency and possibly dying. They need a better system. So my girlfriend just ran into the building with him and got yelled at by several people at the front desk telling her to GET OUT!!! This is supposedly because of the pandemic. However in an emergency you really aren't going to care who is yelling at you inside. So my girlfriend stayed there, yelled back at them until someone took our cat. Not the best experience when we arrived. However the Doctors did their job well and that is what really matters. So thank you again!

Absolutely EXCELLENT! From the initial phone call to the immediate care and concern from the time we arrived until we left. Timely, effective and compassionate communication throughout the visit. One of our two standard poodles had eaten rat poison; we live over an hour away; I called and was given excellent direction and told to come in. When we arrived and I presented at the desk they knew what case I was called for the tech who came and got our girls and got permission to make them vomit then took them back while I filled out paperwork. we were updated by the Doc who was on case within 5 minutes and frequently thereafter till they said they were okay and we could come get them, we were throughly briefed on what they did and what to expect. This being my first time using a PET ER - I expected the cost to be astronomical and was pleasantly surprised when the bill was so little compared to what I was expecting. Overall an amazing care facility with caring and compassionate personnel.

I brought my dog there on a Sunday when my vet was closed because she had a golf ball sized lump on her belly and was in a lot of pain. The staff there was extremely polite, attentive, thorough, helpful and caring with my little baby. I cannot say enough positive things about the exceptional service she received. It turned out to be the best case scenario in comparison of what the lump could have been (just a stomach infection that is being treated with antibiotics) but I am so grateful for the care she received from them. I even received a call from my vet first thing the next morning because they had already been informed of what happened. Thank you again!

I have a 2 year old mini poodle. Last week he lost feeling his back legs and my husband and I were in a panic. As soon as we arrived he was seen right away. All of the doctors and nurses were great. after his Disc removal surgery they called me multiple times a day to let me know what was happening. We were also able to see him daily and when we left the nurses would stay with him to make sure he was comfortable. It is pricey but worth every dime.

Last week we found out our Shay's stomach tumor was fatal..we had thought she would make it through the weekend with us bit took a huge turn for the worse Saturday night. We called Ocean State (hardest call ever) and they were so compassionate. Had US pick a time on Sunday. We arrived and they took our girl in to insert the catheter. We had been told about the garden and chose that spot to love Shay out. I am so sorry that in our grief I paid no attention to the vet techs names nor the beautiful soul that was our vet.
These people were the most compassionate empathetic people I have ever met in my 55 years on this earth. We are devastated that we lost our Shay but were able to love her out among loving people and a beautiful setting. My family is so grateful for all of you

I had to bring my 6 year old cat in. I was worried because I had a bad experience before with them. This time was so much better. My cat was having trouble breathing. They were very careful with him and the techs were very nice and asked a ton of questions while they brought him in the back. They asked if we wanted to be notified before they did any procedures. The vet came in the room multiple times to update us. Unfortunately our situation didn't work out. Our cat was critical with a diaphragmatic hernia and we chose to let him go. They did not pressure us and comforted us.

Feel fortunate to have brought my rabbit here. Highly knowledgeable and compassionate staff. There are a lot of vets out there that do not know the specialized care that rabbits require and you have to be very careful where you go. Ocean State Vet was exactly what I was hoping to find in RI.

I’m so happy I found Dr. Spelman, she’s incredible! My rabbit, Mookie, has terrible teeth and needs routine dentals. Dr. Spelman knows Mookie very well and always provides such excellent care for him. The receptionists are friendly and the techs are very efficient! I’m so thankful for Dr. Spelman & the rest of the staff at OSVS. Thanks for always taking great care of us!

They handled my cats death with grace and dignity. The staff is very well trained to deal with grieving fur-parents. This was the first time going to Ocean State Vet's office and they treated my cat Bunnie and I like we had been life long friends.
They offered to give me more time with my cat while there a few times. Knowing the he was 20 years old and on his last day I declined so he can finally rest.
It was a bittersweet day for me and I know that his body was treated with respect.
A big thank you to the staff members.

I have been going to Ocean State since approximately 2004. In that time I have taken 4 dogs there. The staff has been wonderful. The have been, helpful, friendly, knowledgeable, and above all compassionate. I had one dog that received 9 months of chemo. He didn't make it. The help and compassion shown by the staff helped a lot.

Very happy with the care my cardiac cat has received here at OSVS, both from his wonderful cardiologist Dr. Kane and the ER doctors he was monitored by while being hospitalized after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Communication was excellent, both doctors whose care he was under were fantastic, very thorough and kind, and I felt very comfortable leaving Boo there overnight to be stabilized in oxygen. The techs were thoughtful enough to send a picture and an update this morning before we had spoke with his doctor! Can't recommend OSVS highly enough and their care during this pandemic is amazing. Thank you so much to all who cared for Boo!

I cannot day enough great things about this vet office. We recently had to put down our 14 year old dog, Lucy. We knew it was coming, but not as soon as it happened. When she started to not be able to function on a Sunday afternoon, we panicked as our local vet office was closed. As Ocean State is the closest vet office opened, we got in the car and made the trip to put Lucy at peace and join her long lost doggy friends in doggy heaven. The staff here was exceptionally comforting and made something that can be so hard, a little less tough with their compassion and support. Making the choice to put your animal to sleep is hard in itself, so having this amazing environment to make this process less difficult was incredible. Afterwards, we made the trip up a week later to retrieve her ashes. When we got there, they had us meet them down the hallway, with a door right next to us to exit without having to walk back through the main entrance. These details add up and speak volumes about this facility. Included were her ashes, a letter to our family, her paw prints and flowers to plant on her behalf. At this point, we were beyond impressed and had no words to thank them enough. A few days later, we received a letter in the mail with over 5 different hand written messages from the employees at Ocean State recognizing our loss and sending their love our way. These hand written notes were so sincere and thoughtful. Ocean state has no idea how much they have helped my family and I make it through losing our dog. We love and appreciate everything they have done and will continue to return there for all of our veterinary needs!

Took my dog in when he hurt his back. We tried the recommendation for crate rest & when he got worse, they were responsive to my phone calls and very patient with my million questions. They went ahead with surgery and were kind enough to send daily pictures and progress updates during his hospitalization. The after care and follow up was what prompted me to write a review. So careing especially during a stressful time.

I went to Ocean State Veterinary Specialists on 7/25/2020 with my parrot Braden and we got the best service ever. I want to say a huge thanks to Jeffrey Toraason, DVM who looked at my pet. Not only did he give me a lot of feedback on how to provide the best comfortable lifestyle for my parrot due to his incurable disease called atherosclerosis, he also went the extra mile and did the best he could including recommending another specialist if he doesn’t feel well again for more advice. My family and I have been following the steps from the visit and my parrot’s becoming more active and stronger. There’s still a long way to go since it’s only been day 2, but I’m very satisfied seeing my parrot finally singing and talking again. I also actually drove 2 hours before reaching this clinic and I will definitely come there again since it was worth the drive. I’m praying that things continue to stay positive for us, but please don’t be alarmed if you wait long there because the vets are giving your pet the best care and it takes time.

I am not sure there is a better animal hospital in New England . I have lived all over New England CT,MA,ME,NH always have owned multiple pets. .
This place is nothing less then impressive, there isn’t anything they can’t handle and in a pretty timely fashion.

These people are the most caring beings I have ever met. I’m a neurotic dog owner and they are always kind and compassionate on the phone, even after my 5th call to them in one day after my dogs surgery. They never make me feel like a bother because I have questions. They truly care about every animal that comes in and are beyond compassionate toward the nervous owners!

My senior border collie was treated here over the summer and received excellent care for a very difficult-to-treat immune/platelet condition. Dr. Monheit was very thorough and detailed. Both she and Dr. Holloway were on the ball from the start, in terms of weighing all the options fully and were always available for follow up questions by phone as needed. It was so hard leaving my dog in the hospital, but it was clear the entire staff were attentive and loving to her around the clock during her stay, they treated her like the celebrity she is to us. Most importantly for us, our dog was carefully guided through a really tricky and nuanced treatment plan and she is now starting to stabilize. We feel the intervention she got at OSVS was critical towards getting her through this, and we’re grateful for the care she received there. Highly recommend!

We have been to Ocean State Veterinary Hospital on 2 occasions - the first time to put our beloved older cat to sleep due to a serious illness. We were absolutely devastated, but we took some comfort in knowing thatwe had given her a beautiful life, and that we had done everything possible to save her. The staff was amazing, and were so kind and compassionate during such a terrible time. Fast forward several years, and we were referred to Ocean State again by our regular vet. The newest addition to our family, a young cat that we had adopted, was suddenly having difficulty walking, and was in terrible pain. He was diagnosed with a rare cancer in his hind leg. Dr. Ralphs was very patient with us - explaining all options that were available. We were hesitant to spend the money for amputation, but after tests revealed that the cancer was confined to the leg, we had the surgery done. We received daily updates, and the surgery was a complete success. Dr. Ralphs was very detailed in the discharge instructions, and he recovered very well. After a couple of months he is back to normal, and is a sweet and happy tripod cat. While it was expensive, and a bit of a sacrifice for our household budget, we are so happy that we had the surgery done for him. Our little cat, Bear, is a treasured member of our family, and we are hopeful that he will have many more years for us to spoil him. It seems as though we only visit during stressful and truly desperate times, but if you need excellent emergency care for your pet, we would not hesitate to recommend Ocean State Veterinary Hospital.

Everyone at Ocean State was so incredibly kind and Dr. Alexander was always thorough and honest about what to expect. I ask a LOT of questions and I was very anxious, but they were all always understanding. They did all they could for our little Max. When he passed away they sent a lovely personalized card signed by the oncology team, which meant so much to us.

What an amazing staff who helped me get my suffering animal to their final step in life and they were so considerate and helpful ! Thank you wonderful staff

We had the absolute best experience if that is possible when you put your beloved pet to sleep. Some people think dogs are just animals, but some animals bring so much love & happiness to your family that their death is very sad. Dr. Andres was kind and compassionate. Saying the kindest things to us and making a very hard experience as good as it could be. My sons and I want to thank her for all she did for us and Annabelle and the lovely note she hand wrote in the sympathy card.

I brought my dog there this week after multiple seizures. I had to leave him overnight and wanted a MRI in the morning. They were wonderful. I was pretty much a wreck. They kept me calm, made my dog Shiloh comfortable with blankets in his cage. What impressed me more was that everyone knew what they were doing; sure there were interns, but there were full veterinary doctors there who met with us and explained the situation.
The next morning I was contacted by an outstanding neurologist, Dr. Parsley. She was extremely competent and knowledgeable. We agreed to give my dog an MRI. We discussed medication and she and I came to an understanding on a plan. I didn't want everything she suggested, but we were both comfortable with the kind of medication going forward.
I was kept informed during the entire process; and, when I came home I spoke with the doctor several times to review my dogs behavior on the medication. When your furry family member has problems, I would strongly suggest you bring them here. Each animal is assigned a technician in addition to their doctor. That technician is aware of your pet's situation at any one time. This makes updates easier in between doctor calls (which were also quite frequent!)
Thank you Ocean State for taking care of my dog. Let's hope I don't need to go again in the near future.

I trust these vets very much. I've taken my birds here and my dogs, they treated my diabetic dog with care and love and are amazing people. They also take good care of my birds and even remember them and interact with them as if they were close friends, even my mean bird trusts them and he takes a lot of work to gain trust.

The staff at Ocean State saved our dogs life. They are caring people who really care about your pet. Thank you to all of the staff that worked with Lana especially Dr. Rosenstein. Lana had made a full recovery!

I have only ever been here to put my animals to sleep. I can't speak for the veterinary care or help they provide for sick animals who have a chance to pull through. I can only say they were respectful and we'll equipped to euthanize my ferret when no one else was open. They were able to quickly and easily put the drug into his vein with no mistakes, which is saying something because ferrets are small and veins hard to get. Wasn't expensive. Received nice card and an inked paw print of my ferret.

I'm a Veterinary Technician from out of state and I was very anxious about not being able to go inside for my dog's exam. Once we got to OCVS, the staff put me completely at ease and I immediately knew that my boy was in good hands. Dr. Molly Lawry handled his case and was very knowledgeable and informative, despite his rare clinical signs. The receptionists, technicians and assistants were wonderful as well. Thank you so much for taking care of my best friend, OSVS!!! And thank you for making me feel comfortable throughout the whole process!!! Hopefully we don't have another emergency on Block Island, but if we do I know exactly where to take my boy for the best care available.

I recently visited Ocean State during the overnight hours. Everyone that I dealt with was very friendly and helpful which is obviously important since people are there at that hour with a serious situation. I'd like to particularly recognize Ashley and Brittney (I apologize if either name is spelled incorrectly). On top of the emergency that I was having with my kitty, my car ended up with a dead battery with my roadside assistance not finding anyone to help. Ashley asked around inside for someone who could help me. Neither of us wanting to take away from any animal care, she found Brittney who was ending her shift at 3:00. Brittney sure enough came around with her car and someone else in the parking lot that was waiting came over to help and got my car started. I was so appreciative as it's not everyone who would delay going home to help someone they'd never met before. Many thanks again to these two very special employees!

My wife and I had to euthanize our pet today and although it's been a sad day, ocean state made our day as easy as possible. They were very kind and caring. They gave us paw prints and wrapped her up up in a box with a flower. It meant a lot.

Dr.Horn and Dr. Hunt took such good care of my pet! I could never have asked for better care for my little pet and they took very good care of me as well. I walked in with a pet in crisis and received immediate assistance from a caring and highly skilled staff who were able to place an IV into a small dehydrated animal with precision and revive her enough to stabilize her for several hours before the final call came. And even then, the veterinarians were very kind and made my choices easy and helped every step of the way. And they helped me with the final arrangements too. This is not my first experience here. I have rescued many animals and I ALWAYS bring them here for care. I always will because I can count on excellent care around the clock.

Ocean State Veterinary saved my cat’s life! They did everything they could for him and kept us updated throughout his 3 day stay. Their directions to us for aftercare were detailed and easy to follow. It was obvious they truly cared about our cat as a patient.

They saved my puppy's life, we adopted our puppy Arya in February and she started to becoming very sick, very quickly in about a weeks time. We brought her here and she tested positive for Parvovirus. They immediately went in to treating her, we told them the amount of money we could spend and they did everything they could to stay in that budget. We have had her back home for a little over two months now and she's just such a happy, strong, loyal puppy and we're so fortunate to have gone here when we did. I can't thank them enough.

My 13 year old toy poodle showed kidney issues in his pre-dental bloodwork. His numbers weren't really high but out of normal range. I immediately changed from BARF diet to Hill's kd kidney diet. I had to wait about a month to get him into
OSVS because I wanted the best care possible. I saw Dr Crain ( well Elvis did, due to covid) who did a full bloodwork panel and exam. She called me while Elvis was inside with her and asked questions about his habits, diet and activity. She answered all my questions and suggested options. The next day Brooke called with bloodwork results. Everything was normal and we decided the special k9 kidney food had brought hom back to normal range. We've been back for 3 rechecked and I again talked to Dr Crain about his weight gain and changes in his habits. She checked his thyroid, which came back normal. She said he was in very good condition and to control his weight by increasing vegetables and more exercise. So luckily he loves green peppers, cucumbers and apples. Next appointment is in 4 months. I was and am very happy with the attention and care from Dr Crain. She always gave me cost up front and offered suggestions for options. I am a very involved owner, know a lot about k9 nutrition and activity. I've been in agility for over 20 years and all my dogs have been in excellent condition, vets often think they are younger than they are. I have used a holistic approach to their health using both allopathic and naturopathic treatments. They have received chiropractic and acupuncture treatments. My past vets have said my knowledge and commitment to good dog health is high. I tell you this so you understand when I say Dr Crain is excellent you understand I have worked with a lot of vets and know the difference between average, good and excellent. I have taken my dogs to veterinary school hospitals and done consults with holistic vets for a long time. I highly recommend OSVS for emergencies and specialists. Dr Crain impressed me, as did her assistant Brook.
Ignore the reviews about high costs, you get what you pay for. When you want the best care it is going to cost more than a vet who may not be current on latest information.

Had to go hear for canine emergency care. Called ahead and received good instructions for drop off due to COVID policy. Quick stretcher out of the car and almost immediate phone call during diagnosis and evaluation. Quicker than expected diagnosis with multiple treatment options available and advice from the veterinarian. Amazing care from vet techs, vet, and front office staff. Surprisingly less expensive than I was expecting considering exam, imaging, diagnosis, and treatment. Thank you for everything.

First and foremost, thank you for the real deal triage service. My dog had a true emergency (we were both literally bleeding onto the floor) and my girl was taken back immediately while i tried to maintain continued composure. I work in the medical field (having a special interest in wound care), so while many say the staff is stoic, I commend the efficient, professional, thick skin that is required in such a setting. If it were easy, we'd all do it. They directed me in a manner that allowed my own medical proffesionalism to manage an otherwise awful situation. On top of that, once my dog was secure, a tech quickly emerged from the back, to bandage me up! Thank you!! Temporarily of course, with multiple recommendations to get my own wounds assessed appropriately. I was brought into a room quickly where the VMD educated me on the brief assessment they acquired. I will say, I didn't feel positive vibes at that point where my very down to earth vet gave me a realistic prognosis. Though, true to her word, I received my late night phone call as promised with confirmation of my pets pull through. Upon picking my girl up and bringing her home, I was able to examine the stitch work. Not the prettiest wound care I've seen, I questioned the docs experience, especially when I couldn't find her online or on the website. I'm all for teaching hospitals but I'm sure with limited tissue to start, she did to the best of her ability regardless of experience. I was provided with additional information that the skin was more challenging to close, therefore increasing my bill another $500. I am curious if perhaps if an "old school" vet would have had an issue regarding that, but frankly, my girl is home and healing. All in all, emergency care is not cut and dry and I am more than satisfied with the outcome. Should I land in another emergent situation, I know where I'm going.

We were in Colorado when our Husky was admitted to OSVS with acute bacteriological pneumonia. The vets and techs were amazing--they took great care of her, kept us fully informed with helpful, plain-language descriptions of her condition and the treatments (as well as the costs). Dr. Sun really stood out for her compassion and professionalism in dealing both with our dogs and with us. We could not be more grateful to the entire team there.
Update: Zelda is doing great. Her respiration is back to normal and her energy level is bouncing back. Got a very thorough and helpful follow up phone call from Dr Sun, as well.

I was very impressed with my visit here. I brought my carpet python (Mr. Noodle) here as he had displayed symptoms of resperatory distress the prior week. He was dropping food after striking and wrapping, and had audible issues. The following week the audible issues had subsided, but he was still failing to eat. They did not try to upcharge me more than the emergency visit, and didnt recommend any radical medicine as he was not yet in a starving condition. Instead, they politely asked what my husbandry was to see if there were any environmental factors, and we came up with some plans to get him eating again, as well as trying to figure out what the noise from the prior week was. Since it wasnt actively happening when i brought him in, our best guess was distress from being swapped to an enclosure with much higher humidity had bothered him, and once his body acclimated and the humidity dropped a bit, the symptoms subsided. The doctor i spoke with gave me a way to contact her without needing to fill a valueble time slot at the hospital to keep her up to date, and to allow for immediate treatment should anything happens.
I know medicine involves alot of guesswork, and some people can take offense if it suggested that their care for the animal could be the cause of sickness, however i am very happy with how thorough the doctor was in their questioning besides there being no current active symptoms, just to be sure they fully understood what could be going on.
10/10 plan to use them as my exotic vet for my snakes in the future.

I can't say enough about how great the care was for my dog. I was there about a week ago and everyone was great from the check in staff to Dr Bushnell, the vet. She went above and beyond with explaining everything that was going to be done while also making sure i knew what the cost was. She called me daily and spent as much time as i needed to have questions answered. The discharge information was very thorough and I even got a follow up phone call this week to see how "herbie" was doing. I highly recommend this facility for emergent situations.

This vet's office has been a complete lifesaver for my partner and I, and our dog Harvey. Towards the beginning of COVID-19 our dog started having seizures, and we called them in the middle of the night in full panic mode. Because of the restrictions, we weren't able to come in with him, but everyone was incredible helpful and compassionate, and working their absolute hardest to give both him and us the best quality of care. I can't thank Ocean State Vet Specialists and Harvey's new neurologist enough, and we can't wait to eventually meet everyone in person.
Liz Maclay
We went to Ocean State for a specialized oncology diagnosis and treatment for our elderly flat coated retriever. Our regular doctor was Dr. Crain who was very responsive, accessible, compassionate, patient and knowledgable. All the other doctors who initially diagnosed our dog or filled in for Dr. Crain on her days off were also great in those same ways. The pharmacy filled last-minute requests when I unexpectedly ran out of medicine. Vet techs who I met dropping off our dog (COVID) for exams or treatment were kind and thoughtful. Everyone praised our boy to the skies for his goodness, which meant a great deal to us, since we adored him and wanted those treating him to care about him personally and not just as a generic client/patient. He had a ferociously aggressive cancer and we got a few more weeks at least, we think, of quality time with him - even improvement beyond our hopes - because of his treatment. We're very grateful.

My dog has been here several times for emergencies and most recently to see the neurologist. I’ve always had a great experience with the staff and Drs. The neurologist spent almost an hour with my dog getting to know his history and coming up with a plan. I can’t get a human Dr to spend more than 5 minutes in an exam room so it was nice to not feel rushed. The staff is always so patient with my dog which is a relief because he’s not the easiest to work with. The negative reviews on here should be taken with a grain of salt. Emergency and specialty care is always going to be more expensive than a regular vet. You are paying for the expertise of a specialist and with emergency you are paying for convenience.

I highly recommend. I had moved to the area only a few weeks before I took my dog here. I had to euthanize my dog due to lymphoma that he had been fighting for quite a while. It is already difficult to move somewhere new, but to also have to say goodbye to your best friend makes it that much harder. The entire staff was extremely professional and were very sincere. Many places you get the feeling that people are not 100% genuine in their words and actions, however, at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists there was a feeling that their condolences were sincere.

I need to thank the Ocean state veterinary hospital for the swift care, and ultimately euthanasia of my baby girl Haley. She came in late night in a very fast moving condion called “bloat” the immediate actions taken to get the confirmed diagnosis that I had thought she was suffering with was remarkable..but it’s a vey fast swift and deadly prognosis. They made sure she was very comfortable and at ease.. unfortunately I wasn’t able to get to her in time to hold and reassured her “it’s ok” but the staff reassured she wasn’t alone in fact there were 12 people with her as she transitioned. Thank you, this meant everything to me. Most pets are not just that.. they are our babies, a piece of our family, something that I loved with my being. And as heartbroken I am right now.. I know she was in the right care, right place❤️. My only thought on something is... when a person comes in(I was on crutches for a surgery I had) and I wasn’t originally there, my husband brought her in and had the communication with them throughout the short run of events.. is that when a person gets in the room please don’t have them make the decision on cremation and earns at that point! Let them say there goodbyes, love there baby for a few and digest the events.. as we proceed to check out is a better time in my personal experience to make these decisions, and pick out items and pay. Again I really appreciate you compassion and expertise in my Haley’s unforgettable events.

Thank you to all the hardworking doctors and medical staff for taking exceptional care of my parent’s 9 y/o Black Lab, Teddy, when he went into critical condition with an infection. Teddy stayed overnight for 5 days. The doctors called my parents everyday after doing their morning rounds for an update. They also made sure my parents could visit Teddy every single day, setting up a special visitation room. Teddy will be going back everyday for the foreseeable future for wound care and bandage changes. We are so fortunate to have the best emergency animal care in New England right here in Rhode Island. We are also very fortunate that my parents have pet health insurance for Teddy. You never know when you might need it and it will save them thousands of dollars for this particular incident. To everyone at Ocean State, thank you for giving Teddy a second chance at life, because I’m sure we would’ve lost him had it not been for your expert care.

Ocean State Veterinary Specialists is our go to for Ron's emergency needs. Every time we need to bring him in on a whim, the front desk staff gets him immediate attention. This time Ron was fortunate enough to be home within 3 days after digesting or I should say, not digesting a Broccoli rubber band. The doctors and veterinary staff were always professional and kept us in the loop the entire process. I thoroughly enjoy there open communication and transparency in taking care of our little guy the best and most efficient way possible. I thank them all very much for helping make Ronald's transition from surgery to home life quick and easy while helping him make a speedy recovery. I hands down without a doubt highly recommend them and trust them very much! Can't thank you all enough for taking good care of Ron!

My dog Bella was attacked by another dog and I can’t say enough about the impeccable care she was given. The Dr was very patient and explained everything. I couldn’t be more pleased with the care she received.
I’m also extremely impressed with how attentive everyone was to also take care of my husband and myself as we had numerous dog bites. They were very helpful as far as providing us with a special scrub for our wounds as well as bandages and antibiotic ointment until we could get to an emergency room.
Everyone was just wonderful!

The staff are so kind, sweet, and helpful. The front desk workers were super helpful, answered any questions we had about our dog.
Dr. Rodrigues is absolutely amazing! Rodrigues went above and beyond to take care of our puppy and updated us every time they got the chance!
Highly recommend them to anyone !

The price was reasonable. The care was excellent. My dog was under the care of another facility that didn't diagnose her correctly, so the hour drive to OSVS was worth a proper diagnosis. Imaging equipment and board certified doctors are key to proper diagnosis and proper treatment.

When my dog started vomiting, stopped eating and became lethargic I phoned a few of the nearest vets in my area and none could offer an appointment. I finally phoned ocean state, they admitted her within an hour. I was told what they thought was the problem and subsequent tests/X-rays/scans she would need. Cost was obviously an issue and they talked me through every stage and what was most likely to happen. The worst was confirmed after a scan, she had a blockage and needed emergency surgery.. they saved my dogs life. It was expensive but there were a couple of ways to get help if I didn’t have the funds. Her care was second to none and I received updates (one at 1am when she was safely out of surgery) and photos every step of the way. I can’t fault her care at all. If it wasn’t for them, we’d have certainly lost her.

I know there are some bad reviews and when I was advised to go here for my kitten Zorro I was nervous. Let me just tell you the ENTIRE staff was amazing and compassionate. I unfortunately lost Zorro before getting there and they did the best to make sure he was comfortable and ready for our family to say goodbye. It's never easy losing a part of your family, and they did the best to make sure we were okay. I recommend giving them a shot! Thank you Ocean State!!

Brought my rabbit here on Emergency after receiving bad advice from another Emergency clinic. There’s a slight chance I accidentally hit the horn and was super flustered coming in, and haven’t dealt with Covid-vet care (I’ve been spoiled with farm calls in Alaska and have terrible anxiety!) so this was a new experience but everyone was incredibly patient with me.
Dr. Rawlings was so kind and took the time to address all my concerns, it was obvious they were slammed and my rabbit was stable, but I never felt like we weren’t a priority or my concerns were invalid. I’ve worked in an emergency clinic, and one that saw exotics so I know how hard it can be, and I’m so grateful for the level of care we received here. Thank you so much!

I don't usually write reviews, but I had an excellent experience here. Went in with a guinea pig showing possible early signs of an upper respiratory infection. Staff was kind, helpful, and saw to my little Ralphie promptly. (Of course they prioritize and see the sickest pets first but I was in and out within an hour and 45 minutes.) The vet spent several minutes with me going over the health of my pet an prescribed medication. The price was a little higher than other veterinary offices, but the kindness of the staff and quality of care is more than worth it.

I've had several visits with my problem puppy Ripley and once or twice with my other 2 pitty pups. We have never been met with anything but love and compassion. (Cause most places look at pit bulls with side eyes 😪) My poor Ripley has to get knee surgery and I wouldn't feel comfortable taking her anywhere else. This facility and staff are awesome!!! I wish they were more than just emergency facility cause I would really enjoy ocean state being their full time vet!! Thanks for always being there for my pit crew 💖💖💖 we appreciate you all!!

Everyone at OSVS is dedicated, professional, pragmatic, and caring. I haven't had a bad experience here and I feel like my dog is in good hands when he comes here. Thank you for taking such good care of him!

Our dog started vomiting and we weren't sure if it was an emergency, but around 3 am we knew that we had to take him somewhere. As Ocean State Veterinary Specialists are the only 24 hour vet hospital in our area, that's where we went. They met us at the door and took Vito right in and got him an x-ray. As it turns out, he had two of my sewing pins in his digestive tract! They kept him that night to get an ultrasound, and later the next day took another x-ray. They did everything they could to prevent going to surgery, but unfortunately that's just what had to be done. They got Vito back to us quickly, gave me all the medication, food, and information I needed to take care of him, and were very up front with all of the fees associated with the surgery. I heard from everyone I spoke to that this hospital does outstanding work, and they were right. Vito is back to being his old self, and they even moved up my appointment to get his staples removed because of a cancellation. They are always there to help you even if it's just to get some information, and though they are expensive, it is an understandable expense and does not seem inflated. We get to go back tomorrow to remove Vito's staples, and I know that they will be just as kind, helpful, and genuinely interested in my pet's health as they were the first night we came in. Thank you for saving my baby's life.

Very long wait to see the vet even though the staff told us that they were not busy. And the vet had absolutely no personality - referred us elsewhere and, frankly, I was glad she did because I would not have felt comfortable leaving my dog with her. To be fair, I have had to visit this office before for a pet emergency and they were very good, but that visit was also a VERY LONG wait. Overall, I just don't have a good feeling about the place.

My dog Bandit has been very sick, with diabetes, cataracts, kidney stones and now a uti. When we brought him in because he was peeing blood,we assumed he had an obstruction from the stones and would likely need emergency surgery. When we got to OSVS, our dog was seen immediately to evaluate his condition. They determined almost immediately that it was not an obstruction but rather a UTI. We took him home and a few hours later he started vomiting and would not eat. We took him back and once again, were seen immediately. At that point, we worked with the doctor who gave us the option to bring him home and treat him at home, but her recommendation was to admit him. We decided to admit because we knew, per her explanation, that our dog needed far more medical attention, including fluids and injections of the medication, that we simply could not provide at home. Also, being that sick, we felt that being in the hospital was his best bet.
For those customers who leave bad reviews for the prices OSVS charges, I agree. There prices are high - but that is what you should expect for emergency care. Animals get sick, and many animals need emergency care. This hospital is open 24 hours with full staff available around the clock 7 days per week. Yes - you pay a premium for that.
What I would suggest, and what made the decision for us to admit our dog without hesitation - which turned out to be the best decision for his care, is that you invest in pet insurance. I do not work for a pet insurance company, but it is money well spent. All animals at some point in their life will likely need medical care - if you care about your pet. Do yourself a favor and invest the $30 per month so that when you are faced with a decision for emergency treatment, your animal's health and well being aren't dictated by your wallet.
I understand that animal care can be expensive, if you are not prepared. But owning a pet is a responsibility, not just a novelty. If you truly care about your pet's well being and want to be able to provide the care he or she might need, then get pet insurance. We are happy to report that our dog Bandit is recovering nicely and doing well thanks to the fully capable and competent staff at OSVS. I would recommend them without hesitation for my pet's care and treatment.

Our Bailey was very sick and from the first call to the last visit with him, the staff was AMAZING.
We had to separate when we said good bye but then the doctor let us go in together and gave us time.
Thank You Ocean State for taking care of our Bailey's last hours. He is missed!

My avian vet was out of state until March and my cockatiel Stormy needed to be seen ASAP. Their avian vet was away as well however they listened to me as the owner and we came up with a treatment plan for her that not only saved her life but also was within my budget. Emergency vet visits will always be super overpriced but I will say they were very accommodating and helped me find something that I could afford and save my baby. If you are having an emergency I definitely recommend as they WILL try to save their lives.

I had to rush my bunny, Zen, in this past weekend when he had been struggling to breathe. I had been able to get to the desk and tell them what was going on, the receptionist who was on for the Saturday night (12/16/17) was very quick to call someone up to come see him. The technician was very polite, I feel bad that I cannot remember her name (I was in such a panic), but she was nice and explained she was going to take him into their treatment area to get him some help. While we waited, I was doing papers and I could see how responsive they were to emergencies that came in and the waiting room was clearing out very quickly at the rate they were going.
After about a half hour/45 mins, we were called into a room and the technician explained what was going on and what was being done. We waited another 20 minutes before a doctor had come in and had been able to go over everything that was happening. We had Dr Young and I was very satisfied with her. She was patient and showed general concern for Zen's condition and gave me some hope he would be alright. We talked about care and ways to better his life, she even gave me tips on how to litter box train him! She even offered to continue the eye drops that had been prescribed the day before for what his doctor thought was just conjunctivitis.
She went over everything they had done and were planning to do once Zen was stable and went over the estimate and admission forms. There had been one part I was struggling with and that was if he had stopped breathing. She was very honest with me about that one and said it was hard to bring them back if they had stopped breathing and was very considerate about our concerns. I had wanted them to try, but she helped me see that trying to resuscitate him would be hard, and we opted not to do anything if he stopped breathing. The estimate was decent and only had to pay the low end for the night, I would have had to pay more if Zen was there longer. I was even able to go back and see him before I left to say goodbye. He looked sad, but the technician assured me they would take the best care of him that they could. And would update us in the morning.
At 7:30 the next morning, we got a call he passed away. It was a hard loss as he was my baby, but I was thankful that he was in the care of the staff at OSVS. I love that they offered to have his ashes returned to me and are going to do a paw print for me. They offered for my family and I to go see him before he went, but we had declined.
Though Zen passed away, I cannot thank Dr Young and the staff at OSVS for all they did to help him. I felt better knowing that he didn't suffer and went peacefully. I don't regret bringing him in to be seen and giving him a chance, I think I would have felt worse if I had opted to wait to take him back to his primary vet. In an emergency, I would no doubt bring my pets there.
Shawn Murphy
THEY CARE about your pets, they won't turn you away for an emergency. After 5 places turned me away. They took me in and helped my sick cat. They were extremely fast, effcient, professional and caring. This will be the only place I'll go to again if needed
Matthew Shaub
This was our first visit to this place. They were helpful and accommodating from my initial phone call to the end of the visit. We did not even have to wait in the car . We were able to go right in . The young lady that came into the room helped our dog and was able to answer the questions we had. And the best part is, in the end there was no charge because we did not see a doctor. I would highly recommend this facility.

I want to thank all the doctors and staff at Ocean state for helping P Diddy through some very tough times. Not enough can be said about the gentle care the gave him and the updates to me. thank you all again

I had visited an animal hospital (Ocean State) for the first time ever with my cat, Rufus, yesterday morning. Unfortunately, my poor baby was put down. But I didn't imagine that the specialists at Ocean State would not only be super caring and compassionate with Rufus, but also with me. I had never had to do something like this before but they helped me through the hard decision making and also treated Rufus, even in death, with the upmost respect and I cannot appreciate that enough. Thank you!
Susan Highley
I honestly can't say a bad thing about this place, I went there with my cat, who needed a special test and after reading a lot of bad reviews I was a little leery but I still was hopeful and they impressed the heck out of me. Not only was the test done quickly without scaring my little guy but they came out and refunded me almost half of what I was quoted over the phone. No one has to do that , I wouldn't have known it cost way less if not for their honesty. Best of all is my little guy is going to be fine and he came home and ate a whole can of food which he never does. Thank you Ocean State Veterinary 💙

Nicole Merieros showed my dog and me such kindness and compassion. She was attentive, knowledgeable and gave recommendations for my dog’s at home monitoring. Thank you if you ever read this!!! I never went to this animal hospital before but If I needed to use one again I would come here.

We made an unexpected visit to OSVC last night with our beloved Mia Dolce. We unfortunately had to say good bye to her last night. The care and compassion demonstrated by Dr. Mediros and his support staff was exceptional. He was honest but kind and gentle. He truely had my pet's best interest at heart and did not try to guilt trip us into expensive and unnecessary testing which would have yielded the same result only 1 month from now. They are a special group of people who had a profound impact on my family's time of grief. I would highly recommend them.
Katherine Anderson
Excellent experience from first phone call to discharge. Phone was answered quickly and with great customer service. We were given pricing estimates and wait times - both were accurate. When we arrived all rooms were full, so vet techs and the vet himself came to us in the waiting room then took our cat to the back to avoid any delay. All techs and front desk staff were efficient and competent. Dr. Margarucci was friendly, attentive, and kind. His discharge instructions were written thoughtfully and thoroughly. The vet tech worked with us on how to best administer the medication he prescribed and had us test it out with pill pockets while there to make sure we'd be all set. Best of all, price for an emergency visit on a weekend was $180 including meds. They pointed us towards cost-effective solutions. In and out quickly with great piece of mind and no huge cost burden. Wonderful place!

You guys were the best and so compassionate when i brought my baby boy Pickles in. So sincere and let me spend as much time as i needed to say goodbye. Even though it's never enough time I appreciate all you guys did. I miss him so very much but will always be grateful for the time I had with him 💜 …

The vets there are very professional and get the job done. I feel like my puppy was in good hands. The only thing I would say is that I didn't understand a lot of it because obviously I'm not a vet specialist so maybe if they could explain things in a way I might understand but other than that they were great with my puppy they gave me options for a treatment plan they figured out the problem the best they could with services I paid for

We went in with a very sick two year old that had been fighting an infection for a week. His temp was 105.5. Apollo became the hospital sweetheart as he went through the process of being diagnosed and treated. The technicians, the front staff, the doctors were all the best you could ask for. They were all both professional and at the same time very personal in their concern for both Apollo and us. We were never left with an unanswered question and every test and procedure was explained and the results were given to us along with a recommended next step in the process. We have our pup back with his family now and OSVS is still following his progress. We cannot thank them enough for the care we received and would highly recommend the staff there. Thank you all for the care Apollo received.

Yesterday was a difficult time for my family and I when we decided to put our senior dog to sleep. Dr. Clarke and her staff (Desire & Kaitlin) made us as comfortable as possible, they gave our dog exceptional care and were very professional. We thank them for their trustworthy service and for the support at such a difficult time.

Having read the review that saying this vet is cash cow, I hesitated to bring my lovely cat Bun there. As the only 24/7 Veterinary hospital with ultrasound equipment in RI, I had no choice but to give it a try. Their staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and they were trying their best to reduce my cost (they charged me only once for two emergency visits). Admittedly, their rate listed was higher than local Vet, considering their size and high standard facilities, this was still acceptable. Besides, they were also willing to recommend other low cost local vet (which has high reputation.).
My personal experience with them is quite good, and would like to recommend them.

We are a rescue who brought one of our foster pups in for emergency services which required him to be hospitalized. They were kind, compassionate and understood that we were financially in a tough spot. Everything was explained every step of the way and they stayed in touch multiple times a day. Dr. D'Adezzio was our primary point of contact and she was absolutely wonderful. She kept our spirits up and our costs manageable - she took her time and never sounded annoyed or bothered by our multiple calls. It was such a relief to work with her! Susan in the front office also kept us informed as well as working with us to remain positive about his prognosis! We could not be happier with the result - our little buddy is happy and home in his new forever family and OSV made it possible!!

Our dog Tuxedo was taken in on a Saturday evening after receiving a traumatic life threatening impact injury. The prices for an initial check up were provided to me. I found this to be good business practice as it put me at ease of not being surprised or anxious of costs. I found the exam prices reasonable considering the emergency services they provide. It turns out that usually they suggest a hospital stay for our situation which cost more. However, they did not pressure nor take advantage of me. While presenting this option they informed me in detail the Tuxedo was very fortunate. He was injured but it appeared it could heal with treatment provided on their exam, so I was empowered with a choice. I choose to take him home if this remained the case. After a further examination Tuxedo did have a pelvic injury & was in pain. They offered to do an X-Ray & blood work just ensure no fracture. Again, they informed me that they thought the damage was not a fracture nor did he have other internal complications but these tests could verify this. I felt empowered with a choice, I agreed to these tests. The results were good news. Finally everything looked good, but we are not out of the woods. So lastly, two different vets sat down with me in detail, to explain each potential issue & how to monitor his breathing / health, it was personal & not overwhelming, they took the time to train me. This is what they usually do for overnight observations. This in support of my choice to take him home. Clearly had the situation been worse, they would have suggested otherwise. The point is they provided me with an honest detailed assessment each step of the way. They suggested but did not push services I did not need despite us being in a vulnerable position. Overall, I dealt with multiple staff including Two Vets a Tech and the Receptionist, all were sensitive two my situation And were very professional. They care about animals.
Unfortunately pet emergencies and cost are an unfortunate reality that one must confront simultaneously. Depending on the costs & emergency, there just might not be a good answer. I had no issues with them being upfront about this nor there payment methods. I have zero issues with them being a business or making a profit. It should be of no surprise to anyone. As long as they are genuinely passionate about animals and doing it for the right reasons. Lastly, all I can ask for is to have a place that can provide emergency services making them as affordable as they can & work with you to keep cost down when possible. I am pleased to say that this was my experience on Saturday night.

A couple weeks ago, our long-haired dachshund Hobbes suddenly became extremely sick with a severe case of bloat and pancreatitis. The staff at Ocean State were honest about his condition (which was pretty bad) while still being kind and understanding. He is now alive and well, thanks to them! They were also so patient with us calling to check in when he stayed overnight.
Hobbes thanks you as well!

This place saved my dog's life! We were about ready to leave our relative's house after a weekend visit. Bella has a condition called "collapsing trachea" so when she gets too hot or excited she starts coughing. But as minutes went by condition grew serious and she started having trouble breathing. We drove like crazy to get to this place that is open 24/7 and since it was a Sunday, every local vet was closed. When we finally got there I flew out of the car and ran in with Bella in my arms. Although the place was busy the receptionist noticed me immediately as I ran through the door. She saw my panic and said "what is it???" I yelled "collapsing trachea!" She immediately ran and got the techs who grabbed Bella out of my arms and whisked her away. I have never seen people move so fast in my life, even at regular E.R.'s for people. I mean it was literally only seconds between me getting out of the car and Bella being treated. After some minutes past, we were told that Bella was ok, she received a life-saving emergency procedure (I think they had to intubate her) and she was resting comfortably getting oxygen. They said we were very lucky, when she came in her tongue was already turning blue and we got there just in time. We were told that she needed to remain there for several hours under observation to make sure she was breathing on her own and that her oxygen levels were rising. Our family went to Narragansett and we watched the boats, my children were very upset about Bella but I assured them that she was in good hands. We called when we were supposed to after a few hours, and she was ok. We went back and were able to pick her up, thankfully she did not need to stay overnight. They gave her medication so she was a little drowsy but very much alive. The people at this place are absolute angels. They kept us informed, spoke to us with dignity and care, and were able to help so many animals in the short time we were there waiting. I feel very blessed that we still have Bella, and can't thank the staff enough for the immediate and professional care.

Anyone saying OSVS is a money oriented place clearly did not visit the correct place. I had to go this morning when my dog ingested an entire container of rat poison. Coming from westerly and knowing time was a huge factor in saving my dogs life, I called prior to arriving since all other vets around had answering services. I got to the front desk and said I was there because my dog ate the rat poison and the man at the front desk immediately got on the phone calling for a tech to get my dog and requested to immediately start treatment. I signed forms saying they can do just about anything to save her. Sitting in the reception area I noticed pets and pet parents in and out very quickly and all treated with respect and understanding. I was a mess, crying and worried and the workers came out frequently, updating me on how my dog was doing, from the second I walked in the door I knew my dog was in the best hands possible. within an hour I met with the doctor and was given a few options on how to treat my dog.(I chose the most expensive option) Once we decided, they brought back my dog and gave us instructions on what to look for along with her medication. Then we walked to the desk for the bill. I expected the bill to be extremely high. (considering it was a 24 hour vet, an emergency, they had to give meds to induce vomiting, monitor her, do an exam, give her the first day of her meds as an injection, the medication itself, and the doctors visit) And when it was all said and done the bill was under $200. There is no where that would come close to the care my dog and myself got especially along with the price. Thank you OSVS for truly saving my baby.

A little over a year ago I utilized services at this veterinarian. My 8 year old chihuahua had ongoing liver disease since birth and had taken a turn for the worst. My veterinarian could no longer help him and he was in crisis and needed a higher level of care. Ultimately going brain dead. My vet offered Tufts (which I have had terrible experiences with) or OSVS. I chose to give OSVS a shot. Best decision I could have made. My chihuahua didn't make it that day, and I was nowhere near ready to let go or make the decision to put him down. Kathy Tamberello (sp?) was our emergency vet. She was an angel sent to me that day. She put me at ease and got me into the right head space to make the humane decision to let go. She shared tears with me and spent ample amount of time in our room while I was saying goodbye. When all was said and done and he had passed, she walked out with him resting comfortably over her shoulder. I will never forget how she did that for me. It left me with a memory of him at peace. She showed genuine compassion that day. Fast forward a year from now one of my dogs is experiencing some vision loss and I feel totally confident coming back to OSVS.

If I could give 10 stars to OSVS I would. My bloodhound was brought in with vomiting for 24 hours. They brought her in immediately to find that she had pneumonia. These people worked with her day and night to get her better. The people here were always there for me too...even when I called three times a day and visited daily. After a week my Olivia came home on Thanksgiving. So very much to be thankful for. You are all amazing!

We brought our dog in and thought who we thought was having a stroke.. they grabbed her , took her in the back and have her the best care for the next couple of days. She is ok, had vertigo thank God!! They are amazing!! Went in the back to see her and it was so busy , like a triage.. everyone was working so hard. We are so thankful for taking such good care of our Penny!!♥️

We had to take my 1yr old hound mix Carson to the emergency vet about a month ago because he got into some ibuprofen I left in by bag and accidentally left within his hound nose's reach. Their response time couldn't have been quicker with the charcoal and induced vomiting. They were diligent about calling me every day he was there (3 days total), checked his kidney numbers and updated me daily, and let us visit anytime we wanted, even letting us take him on walks out in the yard. We live over an hour away, so they were extremely helpful and accommodating. They referred to us as "Carson's mom" or "Carson's dad" on the phone, which reinforced that they knew how important he was to my husband and me. He was in good spirits every time we saw him and has been great every since we brought him home. Can't thank them enough for saving my puppy. I know the quick response in the very early hours saved my dog from certain kidney failure and death with the amount of ibuprofen he consumed and I have also learned a very valuable lesson.

Our experience at Ocean State was phenomenal, despite the fact that an emergency room is never a place anyone wants to be.
We brought our cat in with an intestinal blockage - after a fairly short wait, we were brought into a consultation room and given a very thorough diagnosis, using transmitted x-rays and information from our local vet as well as firsthand information from an on the spot checkup.
The trade-off between surgery and watch/wait was discussed and we elected to have the surgery performed. The surgeon called us that night to let us know the operation was a success, and we were able to visit the next day. On discharge we received a thorough briefing and were able to call with questions or concerns during the recovery period. The entire time we were extremely impressed with the level of service, commitment and compassion shown by every single person we encountered from the front desk to the surgeon to the techs. I'm extremely thankful a place like this exists and that I am close by - and my cat would be too, if he had any comprehension of such things.
A note on the cost - this was an expensive treatment: surgery with no insurance isn't ever going to be a low cost affair, but I will mention that we were provided a low and a high range for the estimated cost, and I was refunded ultimately over $500 as the total cost of care came in well below the low range / deposit made - point being that despite the unavoidable high price tag, I believe OSVS is honest about what they charge.
Thanks everyone - our community is lucky to have you.

Today was our first visit. I gotta say we couldn’t be happier. We brought our dog in when she ripped her nail off. They took her right in and removed the nail the rest of the way. Devon was our tech. He was extremely nice and helpful and our pup Maggie seemed to like him. Thank you for everything!

I really can not say enough good things about Ocean State. They have gone above and beyond for my beloved Siberian Huskey Smokey. A few years back i thought i was going to lose him. He was very ill and bleeding internally. They took him right in and saved his life . The entire staff was wonderful. Now just yesterday i had to bring him back. He was very ill vomiting , not eating and just all around not doing well. Again they rushed my sweatheart in the back and within a few hours they new exactly what was wrong and had a treatment plan. My Smokey came home last night and is now eating and as far as i can tell well on his way to a full recovery. I could never thank them enough for everything they have done. Professional and caring. The entire staff is wonderful!

Recently made a unexpected visit with our dog Ace. Despite the fact the hospital was extremely busy the staff was extremely compassionate and showed a that they had a great deal of empathy... I wish that I was able to remember names so that I could give some recognition to the gentlemen who took Ace inside the hospital, the women who answered the phone , and the young lady Who brought Ace back to our car after being seen; if you know who you are thank you so very much..

We took our dog in at 9:30 PM because he couldn't lay down, due to pain. We were there until 3:30 the next morning. One thing that happened, we were told that we were going to get the medication and discharge papers in 15 minutes. An hour went by, and we still hadn't received anything. We went to the front desk and asked for the medication and papers. A staff nurse went into the back for about 5 seconds and came back with them. It makes me think, how long were they going to have us wait for them, when they seemed to be ready? He eventually got what he needed, and we left. We understand that you have emergencies that you have to attend to, but can you please hire more doctors and workers for the night shift? It seemed that there was only one doctor available for the whole place. And can you please update/check in with us while we're in the rooms waiting for prolonged periods of time?

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to all the Vets, Vet techs, Surgeon and all staff at Ocean State Vet. Our beloved cat Samson had 3 urinary blockages eventually requiring PU surgery in April and a week long stay at Ocean State due to recurring blockages. They took excellent care of him with daily call updates from Vet and Vet tech even at one time sent us a picture of Samson which meant so much to us. She also got him cozy in a bigger cage with blankets and moved him to quieter cat room when able. On June 5th, he reblocked again and we rushed him back to Ocean State, they successfully unblocked him and took great care of him there for 3 days. The Vets were phenomenal with their communication and care of Samson by ensuring he had surgery and internal medicine consults and doing everything in their power to help him and us as it is a heartbreaking disease for our beloved young boy. He is home and doing well Ocean State saved his life again!

I recommend coming here. My hamster Sasha had a tumor on her face which was huge and the exotic doctor performed a surgery on her and removed it. They took very good care of her and made sure that I was satisfied with the outcome. It is a little pricy but she tried to help me out with pricing it but it was so worth the money. My hamster is back and better than ever 💖. Most exotic doctors wouldn’t even want to preform the surgery because she was so small. But not this one!

My dog was seen around midnight. Just walking through the door we were treated with warmth, understanding, and were made to feel as comfortable as possible. Sadie was taken right in and we soon knew she had cancer and we needed to end her suffering. The entire staff was so caring not only to us but to Sadie. Thank you to the whole staff for helping us through this difficult experience.

I just want to thank Dr. Youngblood for all of her help and compassion when it came to my dog Diamond (my baby). Diamond needed to be examined and treated and Dr. Youngblood looked out for us in the most amazing way. I am so happy that she has a great heart! This was my first (hopefully my last) emergency with my little dog and I’m glad Dr. Youngblood was able to help. I hope she remembers us because we will always remember her. We are eternally grateful! ❤️

Excellent vet hospital. Dr. Clarke and staff were a compassionate professional team. It was a difficult visit saying good bye to my last greyhound. They care about the animal and their family. Would definitely go back here for vet care when I have pets again. Thank you to everyone at Ocean State. I could never do your job.

We had a wonderful experience at OSVS. Our 14yr old cat was not doing well and we had visited her Vet with little to no help in terms of what was going on. As our cat was not improving we took her to OSVS and Dr. Thomas was amazing. She helped give us a better picture of what was going on and our possible options. Unfortunately our cat did not do well and we make the humane decision to let her go. The way the staff handled the planning and administering of the euthansia was so thoughtful and caring. In such a bad time we had an amazing experience. If and when we get another pet we hope to sure use their services. Thank you all for helping us in this difficult time.

From the moment I walked into that building I knew this was the right place to bring our dog they were so caring they brought him in right away they ran as many tests as they could to find out what was going on with him unfortunately we weren't able to take him home but they made it the best experience that we could have ever encountered. When we had to make the decision that we had to put our dog down they coached us through the entire thing explained everything into extreme detail they comforted us and gave us as much time as we needed in the short amount of time left with our dog I can't thank them enough !

I'm writing the review because I have seen a few one stared reviews, and my experience was not remotely close to any of those. I took my giant flemish rabbit to be seen in emergency care for a large growth on her lip/chin. I was seen by a technician immediately & then triaged in with the other patients. Because of real emergency visit from another animal, I was there for a while. But someone was sent into the room to let me know what was taking so long. The treatment & evaluation of my rabbit was discussed and overall, am very happy about the process. I'm waiting on a call later today for a follow up visit. I'm very happy with who I saw & staff overall.

Have had to bring at least 2 pets in for help..i already knew one had cancer..my dog..we had to say goodbye to her..that was sad. Euthinizing plus cremation is expensive. Although they were nice there Most recently my oldest cat had a neuralogical problem..I had the ONLY neuro doc for cats in the state. She and her staff were super nice and gentle. They did all they could for her which helped for awhile. When it came time to say goodbye, it was heart wrenching..but they gave her a little coffin, flowers and later on, sent me her paw prints and two cards in the mail. I have brought other pets there before when i said goodbye..one guy was semi sympathetic but i guess after awhile they kind of detach themselves. All in all, its a nice place, albeit expensive place. Shop around. But neuro doc is kind here and good staff with her.

This facility provided great care, professional and comforting service, from the receptionist, technicians and doctor. Realizing after the fact that I called to check on
status too often (every two hours) I can't believe I never caught a hint of annoyance.
I received caring considerate service for my pet and I from first entry though followup calls.

Devon and Dr. Gumash were wonderful to my puppy. I could tell they really care about the animals they interact with. Dr. Ganesh took plenty of time to explain the options and didn't try to pressure me into any unnecessary procedures. Will definitely use them again in the future if my vet is closed!
Bernadette Messier
Brought our Boston Terrier in today after my local vet wanted to euthanize her last week for an unofficial diagnosis of cancer. OSV did some testing and offered advice professionally and personally. She does have the start of an aggressive cancer and it can be controlled with medication for now. The second opinion we received today put our minds and hearts at ease.

The only recommendation I have would be to have CSR’s explain Care Credit to customers. I was not aware when I made my initial deposit for emergency trauma care. This would have saved me a lot of stress had I known I could apply at that time. My overall experience was exceptional. The surgery department & Dr Sweet are without compare!

I have came here twice because once my once my dog eaten one of my friends ash trays and as soon as I got there my dog was loved and taken in very quickly. Yes, they are expensive but if you cant to afford to pay for a incident that is happening with your animal, then maybe you shouldn't have one. Many comments are about money, it is not the vets fault you may not have enough money. Like they have said on responses they need to pay for all the needs your animal may need plus the staff that work over night. The second time witch was just last night at 1130pm my dog had gotten hit by a car and the person didnt even stop. I brought him there he got immediate love and care and was taken in over night. everyone was so freindly. I always have amazing experiences here. If it wasnt for this 24/7 vet my dog could have died.

Have been here many times, this time was the hardest! Dr.Medeiros was wonderful with me. She explained Wilburs issues , was very compassionate and understanding of our decision to put Wilbur down. The tent outside was so much better than a room inside. We were not rushed, enjoyed quality last minutes with Wilbur. When they came out for final injection the young man was also very understanding and compassionate. Made things a lil easier for us. Thank you so much! Judy DeLuca

I adopted my bunny Marie seven years ago and she was always shy and did not like to be handled.
Eventually, she developed an abscess on her chin and I took her to a vet who told me that she needed to be put down. I could not believe it as they only assessed her for about five minutes.
I googled bunny specialists and came up with Ocean State. I called them very distraught and they told me to come in right away.
Dr. Spell man told me that there many things we could do and she performed dental surgery and antibiotic treatment for Marie.
Marie had many dental surgeries done after this as this was just a recurring problem with her. She was a very lievely and beautiful bunny and I was always thankful for the time I had with her because I already thought I would lose her.
Dr. Spelman went out of her way for me many, many times, accommodated my crazy schedule, made time to speak to me personally or on the phone and always made sure to explain to me everything that was going on.
Today, I had to take Marie in to say goodbye to her. The vet who was there couldn’t have been kinder and gave me time and space to make the final decision. Everybody had so much compassion and was so very understanding of my grief.
On my way out, I saw Dr. Spelman and she had very kind words for me and assured me that I had done the right thing.
Marie was given back to me with a card with her paw prints and in a tasteful box with some fresh flowers. I have nothing but good things to say about everybody there and I will always be thankful to Dr. Spelman for giving me so much time with my best friend, Marie.

I have, unfortunately for my wallet, been here a few times with my crazy mutt. Most recently, my guy (Ozzie) was attacked on a walk after hours and needed sutures. Ozzie was as happy as ever when he was ready to go home the next day (though very sleepy).
They obviously took very good care of him when he was there - they even took me back to see him before I left for the night. I am moving out-of-state in a week and only hope that I can find a 24 hr vet in the area as good as OSVS , incase if I need one again.

We took our dog there for an emergency, they took him right away in the back to get him accessed, the doctor came in and told what was wrong, explained everything to us, the worse case and the better. They let us visit before they started to work on him. Then later that night we got a call letting us know how he was doing. And again the next morning. Dr Hallowell was great!! The surgeon called to let us know how Oscar was after the surgery. The front staff was friendly and kind. Although, they may be on the more expensive i feel it was a great choice, his is my baby and his with it. Definitely would recommend them!! Thank you Dr Hallowell and staff members who helped save it boy!! I was nice to know he was in good hands!

This place is a wonderful place to bring small mammals. They did an excellent job taking care of the family gerbil when she was sick. The vet was both caring and realistic. The staff was wonderful as well. The prices were fine. I highly highly recommend this place, especially for small exotic rodents.

I would like to thank the doctors and staff for the excellent care and compassion given to our beloved Lady Lu , especially Dr Beck, who kept in contact daily, Melissa who sent updates with pictures and Dr Kessler of Internal Medicine who kept us informed weekly. We are also grateful to the doctors who tried so hard to stabilize Lady Lu on her last visit to OSVS. Unfortunately we had to make the difficult decision to euthanize Lady Lu.
We will forever be grateful for your excellent care and compassion

I must say, through the years I've used ocean State for every dog I've ever owned and I'm always touched by the warmth of the staff ... A very special thank you to Dr. Sweet once again for the support and care of my dog Mackey. His gentleness and kind heart always amazes me. A top notch doctor, one whom I trust with my most valuable possession, Mackey ❤️. I wouldn't take my dog to any other specialist other than Dr. Sweet. The veterinarian technicians and front staff are an amazing team. Couldn't ask for more genuine, kind, warm and competent individuals. The care received from beginning to end is simply phenomenal. I'd like to thank you all for everything you do to make things easier duringd what's always a stressful time. I can honestly say, I truly love and appreciate all of you.
With love and respect

My cat had gotten into who knows what. Since he as a tough guy, he never showed he was hurt. By the time he did show it, he was in critical condition. An assistant came up to me and took my cat right away. They started working on him before I was even done with the paperwork.
The doctor (Mark or Mike - Sorry, I was in shock!) was EXTREMELY support, compassionate, understanding and absolutely heck-bent on trying to figure out what was wrong with my big guy. Unfortunately, he was already too critical to save. The entire staff was extremely supportive during this horribly horrific time.
Reading the other reviews, I can see why they may be concerned about collecting their money. This place is state-of-the-art. They had my cat inturbated almost immediately, because he was unable to breathe on his own. Although it's rough, especially during a critical circumstance, I can understand. People who don't pay drive up the costs for those of us who do.
I would highly recommend OSVS to anyone needing emergency pet care. Thank you, OSVS, for helping us as much as possible with Big Big. By the way, $65 to have my cat's ashes put in a pretty cherry wood box with a certificate of authenticity that he was cremated by himself - to those of you, like me, that feel ashes are some type of comfort.
Thanks again, everyone. We were blessed you were there for us.

The compassion and care I received for my cat "BooBob" was outstanding.
On April 12, 2015 I brought BooBob in to Ocean State Veterinary at 2:30am for an emergency visit. The immediate care given was over an above what I have every experienced from a Veterinary Specialists. The doctor and staff are top notch. They showed so much compassion that it made me feel like they knew us for a life time.
The place is clean, organized, compassionate workers and I would highly recommend everyone to experience a visit

It breaks my heart to write this but I want to thank Dr Marini and the staff at Ocean State for the love and care they showed my family and my baby on her last day. Our Pebbles was just 4 years old when she suddenly and extremely unexpectedly began to deteriorate. Within hours she lost her ability to walk, see and hold her bladder. The staff was very empathetic to us but it was Dr Marini who I truly believe I need to thank. She understood our fears and devastation and gave us time to talk through hard choices in a private room. She was very honest about Pebbles' chances without ever being hurtful. When it came time to let Pebbles go she let us lay with her and never rushed us. You never want to be in that situation, but if you are, the doctor treating your baby will make all of the difference. It's hard to be thankful for much this holiday but I am thankful, that if nothing else, Pebbles had Dr Marini as her caregiver yesterday.

Nice facility, caring staff. We had to bring our beloved Tasha Sparkleena to Ocean State Veterinary Hospital Sunday Columbus Day Weekend 2016. Sadly, in 48 hours we returned home with Tasha to be released to Rainbow Bridge, here in CT, by her Vet, in our/her bed. Despite our broken hearts, it is a great comfort to know even though her case was complicated and rare she received the best care while at OSVH. Words cannot express my gratitude for Dr Justine Johnson. Tasha’s case was involved and we did not fully understand what was going on or what ultimately caused Tasha's demise when we left that Tuesday. Dr Johnson ended up calling, and explained with patience and great detail, what actually happened to Tasha those last 2 days and quite possibly the weeks before that led up to her suddenly falling ill. We understand now, no matter what, there is NOTHING that could be done to save her. That being said, the folks at Ocean State are not only professional but more importantly they care. They care about you and their patients. They want to do the best for every single one of us that steps through their door. From the moment we walked in until we walked out that last time, not once did we feel like a cash cow, or taken advantage of. Are they expensive, I don't think so, they certainly are more than your normal vet, but OSVH has 10+ times the staff, not to mention the facility itself, and the medical equipment, it all seems pretty relative to me. If you choose to take your beloved fur baby to the hospital because you feel their lives are in danger and then complain about the very people that saved their lives, or made them well, shame on you. Instead try being grateful that such a place exists for our loved sentient beings and there are people that dedicate their lives to helping them which ultimately helps us. Peace

My wife called ahead on a Sunday evening that we we're bringing our 11year old Sheepdog who could not walk & was having difficulty breathing. The staff was ready when we arrived with a gurney to get him from the car. All the staff we interacted with were very nice & compassionate. I would recommend this animal hospital.

My sweet guinea pig Timothy was very sick on a Saturday night of course. They took him right in, were very nice and good with him. Total visit 190 meds included and he's so much better now! This place was worth the drive.

To make a very long story short, I am a fish keeper and I have had a fish for 10 years that has recently taken ill. I did not realize that Ocean State Veterinary Specialists had an aquatic doctor on their team! That is very difficult to find in a small state like Rhode Island. But always thinking that because they are a specialty facility, the cost of trying to treat my fish could not justify the cost to replace it, even though it has sentimental worth to me. So I reached out to the doctor, Dr. Littman, on Facebook to see if he could give me some assistance without being a patient. I was amazed that the doctor and his associate, Susan Pollitt, reached out to me and helped me over the phone without even being seen, without giving them one cent. It is so encouraging to know, that the people at Ocean State have the integrity and sincerity to put animal welfare before dollars. I am grateful. Thank you.

Have used OSVS many times in the course of Veronica's 14 1/2 years; from orthopedic surgeries to internal medicine consults to emergency room visits. Never had a bad experience. Everyone has always been tremendously competent and professional as well as having a wonderful bedside manner with Veronica.

My husband and I had to bring our dog Penelope in for end of life services. The staff was compassionate, caring and extremely professional. They helped to make a very difficult time a little less painful. Thank you.

Great service, nothing like this hospital anywhere around here! It's not fast, and it not cheap, but they saved my cat's life twice already - and that's worth the time and money to me. They are very thorough, run very much like a people-hospital. The difference with regular people-hospitals and OSVS is what's shocking to most of the low reviewers here... There's no health insurance for animals, so people aren't used to having to talk about the bill in such a frank way. We're not used to considering the cost of treatment when deciding the course of treatment. Some of the ppl here who have given OSVS 1 star have stated that this makes them rude, and is a sign that they don't care about your pet. This just isn't true in my experience. Unfortunately, it's a necessary part of doing business... and I am grateful they are in business!

Very competent, caring, and loving staff. My visits were very positive and thankfully my pet is doing well. There isn’t another facility equipped to handle all types of services for your pet with the exception of their sister facility, BayState, located in Swansea, MA, which is as good.

You really couldn't. You saved our baby boy and gave him back to us. We couldn't ask for anymore than that. We personally would have liked to have met each and every dr. That was involved And congratulated them on a job well done. We realize this wasn't possible, but your er drs went above and beyond. Also I personally want to thank dr Caleb Alexander for a job well done. Also this has been put out on face book. We do highly recommend and when people tell us its expensive they are told you get what you pay for.
Thanks

I highly recommend OSVS to anyone looking for a regular veterinarian or in need of emergency care for their pet. I recently had a late night emergency with my pet, and I was very impressed with the level of attention, care, and comfort they provided to both me and my pup. Again, these people are great.. 5 stars.

Our 6 year old cat went into heart failure very suddenly and after our normal vet (NK Animal hospital who is equally wonderful) closed for the day. We had only known he even had heart disease for about 8 hours before he was barely breathing and we had to rush him to the emergency center at OSVS. They were beyond amazing - waited for us at the door, rushed him back, removed the fluid from around his heart so he could breath more easily and kept him under constant care and oxygen until he was well enough to go home 2 days later. We know the prognosis for Heart Disease kitties is not a good one - but we are so thankful that we have some more time with our boy and we cannot thank the OSVS staff enough, we will be eternally grateful for this blessing and will always remember Dr. Shatkin and Dr. Vaughn who both played in immense role in Scout's recovery.
Additionally - I wanted to comment on the cost because I noticed how many people are saying OSVS is pricey. While I cannot comment on the cost of the regular veterinary services, I can say with complete confidence that their emergency services are reasonably priced. We would have paid just about anything... but for emergency services and inpatient stay for 2 full days with continuing treatment, oxygen therapy and medication I can honestly say when we got the final pill I expected it to be about $500 more.

These guys are incredible. I brought my dog in for an emergency surgery to have a blockage removed and his care and team was phenomenal. Dr. Trow was great at answering any questions I had and walking me through the whole process. I hope my dog is never sick again but if he ever is I will definitely bring him back here.

My pet rat Raisin was having trouble breathing on the 4th of July, they took her right in , put her in oxygen, and took care of her. Then the Dr came to tell me what was wrong with Raisin. She is alive and doing great thanks to Ocean State Veterinary Services. It was well worth waiting for the results Raisin has made. I would have lost her if it weren't for here.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. And Raisin thanks you also.

I cannot thank the staff here enough. They were very kind and respectful during an emotional situation having to put my cat down. Thank you all again for the compassion you showed to both my cat and myself.

I had trouble deciding between 3 and 4 stars. In one regard, they were great when my dog got hit by car and I just showed up with him. They whisked him in and quickly got him comfortable and made me relax. But OH MY the money! You just feel a little helpless because there is truly no way to know if every charge on the very long receipt is totally warranted, and they add up very quickly.

This is one of the most impressive and dedicated group of medical professionals I have ever seen - much better than those at many of the "people" hospitals. We brought our cat, "Stitch" in after finding him at death's door when we arrived home from a weekend getaway. He had come down with a urinary blockage - a life-threatening condition for male cats. He was laying on his side, in shock from all of the toxins backed up in his body. He was unable to move, hardly breathing, getting cold and getting worse every minute. With a quick diagnosis and realistic advice from a wonderful local vet - Dr. Laurie Lofton, we rushed 30 miles to O.S.V.S. Since we called ahead with the diagnosis, they instantly took him in and started working to bring him back. In less than an hour, he was awake and sitting up! They managed to stabilize him over the next few days, and we brought home a very happy cat. He even made some friends during his stay. We want to thank Dr. Amy Trow and the entire team of dedicated professionals who were so helpful and personable in helping us out. Several other reviews mention the high cost of the care at OSVS, and yes, it was expensive, but they had to do a lot of things to save him. Right up front, we were presented with an itemized estimate of "best case" to "worst case" costs, including options in case of unexpected changes. We noticed that the itemized cost for each item actually was not expensive at all - totally unlike those "people hospitals". We paid the "best case" figure as a down payment, and the bill did not increase at all, even after we picked him up 3 days later. In fact, they said we had a credit of 83 cents, and gave us the change. Did I mention that they are honest too? - Bill & Lori V. - Chepachet, RI

I wanted to say a special thanks to Jamie Resnick and the staff at OSVS.
My healthy, well-mannered2 yo Belgian Shepherd started showing bizarre signs of obvious discomfort and potential mild to threatening illness. Her bowels had been normal, so I was concerned.
I brought her in as her signs did not dissipate rather increase.
Everyone was professional, kind, and communicative.
Resnick was informative, knowledable and relatable.
I felt confident Maisie was in great care. I left with more knowledge as well and although it was an unexpected cost and ended up being (fortunately) nothing serious, it’s better to be safe then sorry.
We are not permanently local so thank you for a great ER experience in RI.

Thank you to Dr. Bushnell and all the staff for saving my Dolce. We'll never be able to thank you enough for all the care and love you gave her! xoxo

I recently lost my beloved dog Bella this past Sunday and brought her to be cremated. The lady who came out to the car to get her was compassionate for my loss and sorrow. When I picked up her ashes the young lady came around from the counter to hand her directly to me with complete respect for my recent loss. I have never been here before but would highly recommend to anyone who would need to bring their pet here. Thank you.

Took my dog here when he had an accident that left his back and neck injured. He was wailing in pain. Staff took good care of him and he was able to make a full recovery...no complications or lasting effects from the ordeal.Everything was top notch and aided in making a bad situation much less stressful. Highly recommend.

I have been to ocean state on three different occasions, my most recent was probably the scariest. I was woken up at 3am by my 11 month old puppy, Coletti, she had been making a coughing sound and I instantly realized she had swelling in the face and her tongue. I called ahead and they were ready when I arrived. The staff worked quickly, were extremely friendly and explained every step they took to get Colletti breathing properly again. I would highly recommend Ocean state Vetinary Specialist when you have an emergency with your fury friend.

Jake was treated by Dr. Kirchofer who I believe saved Jake's life. He called me daily to update me on Jake's condition and kept me well informed on how Jake was doing. I cannot thank Dr. Kirchofer and his staff enough for helping Jake to recover. I would recommend Ocean State Veterinary Specialists to everyone I know.

We were impressed with the treatment , attention and interest provide our cat. Yes , it is a bit pricey but for all they offer we feel the price is justified. Then , because Casey was quite I'll and sedated we visited him in the ICE

I can't imagine OSVS not being there for my boy, everyone has been pleasant and informative. My boy is a nervous Pittie who doesn't really enjoy being away from me, COVID has made it hard but I trust their care and I know he's in great hands when the doctor tells me, " he doesn't need this basket muzzle, so we're just going to take it off of him". I can't thank them enough for all that they've done this far for my boy.

Our dog had a pretty serious laceration and we brought him here for urgent treatment. We had a great experience with the care and attention he was given, the hospitality we received during a stressful time, as well as pleasant phone conversations about care after the visit. I would highly recommend this facility! Pricing wasn’t outrageous either!

Staff at this facility were all very professional, organized and friendly. We were there to meet with Dr. Hunley after our husky had been diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma on his paw. Dr. Hunley spent a huge amount of time with us, presented us with several options for treatment, and he is a kind of pioneer insofar that he has adopted various treatments where he will insert chemotherapy at the site in order to avoid the systemic effects of giving it intravenously or by mouth with certain soft tissue sarcomas. He is really quite brilliant, and I would strongly recommend him if you find yourself in need of an oncologist for your pet.

We can't say enough about this place, the staff at Ocean State is very compassionate and kind to the pet and owner(s). We have come for sickness and the passing of our pets and every time they make our pets and us feel at ease during the situation. Thank you guys for all you do for our pets.

Dr. Tamburello (Emergency Medicine) is amazing.
Dr. Tamburello is absolutely wonderful. She is knowledgeable, extremely patient, she gives you numerous treatment options within your personal budget, and most of all she provides the very best care for your beloved pet. She truly cares for not only your pet but for you as well. I brought my very sick puppy in for emergency care and I cannot tell you how lucky I was to have her as our doctor.
This puppy was a medical mystery (some sort of congenital disorder of malabsorption and skin issues). Dr. Tamburello provided amazing supportive care and was open and honest about each intervention we gave to him and what it would do. Although my sweet boy was not strong enough, I am extremely confident we did everything we possibly could for him without letting him suffer.
I will, without a doubt, be bringing my other dog to see Dr. Tamburello if that situation ever arises. She is wonderful.

I've had 4 visits to OSVS in the past year with one or the other of my two dogs and all I can say is that the professional, caring diagnoses and treatment they both received is top quality. Everyone there, from front desk personnel to the specialist veterinarians takes an immediate interest and all have shown nothing but compassion and caring.

I called this afternoon in regard to my dog not feeling well. I was on the fence about taking him in. The lady that answered the phone, I wish I knew her name, was the sweetest most helpful rep. She listened and provided some great info and help set my mind at ease. If I ever need your service I would not hesitate. Thank you for your kindness and compassion!!

My senior German Shepard, Freedom, gave us a scare last week and we had to rush him to the emergency vet at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists, and right away the staff was very attentive, took him out back and assessed the situation quickly. Dr. LaFountain first treated Freedom and she was very attentive and explained what possibly could be wrong. Freedom had to stay overnight and as promised Dr. LaFountain called with a check-in towards the evening hours with hopeful news. She even addressed the issue that a new Doctor would be treating Freedom on Monday. Come Monday I popped in just to visit Freedom, and the staff didn't make me feel like burden for just popping in and actually Dr. Medeiros who was treating Freedom that day, asked me if I could wait a little until he ran a few morning tests on Freedom and he would give me an update right then and there. Freedom was discharged later that evening and both Dr. LaFountain and Dr. Medeiros worked hard to keep costs down and did only what was necessary to treat Freedom.
This was not my only visit to Ocean State Vet, and the few occasions i have been there the entire staff has always been friendly and helpful and very supportive in making the right decisions.
