Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital is the only veterinarian in the whole region near New Orleans that devotes itself to the care of pets that are not dogs and cats. Good thing: Many of us have pets other than dogs and cats. They will see your pet immediately if there is an emergency. They accept referrals from other veterinarians for pets that are not dogs and cats. Caveat: From my experience, a pet owner never interacts with or sees one of the doctors at Avian and Exotic. Instead, a receptionist or tech takes the pet away from an owner, and brings the pet to a back area. After a pet is examined, it is a receptionist or tech that brings the pet back to the owner. It's UNSETTLING to not meet the doctor who is examining a pet. I gave the review 4 stars, only because I never even was introduced to the doctor who would examine my pet. Otherwise, I'd have given 5 stars. I drove from out of town to visit this veterinary office twice: Neither time was I to meet the doctor who examined my pet. I do appreciate that this office is very busy. That's why I didn't penalize by more than one star. In short, I'm glad this Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital is available. Thank you. I thank Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital for their response. Wow, they are surely busy, being that they are the only ones who devote themselves to our unique pets. So, it makes sense that things can become really HECTIC in the exam area. Thank you for helping us to care for our pets. Rating is augmented to 5 stars. 7JUL2022

Excellent vets and technicians. I took my two guinea pigs a couple of months ago there for their first annual check up. The doctor was extremely knowledgeable on this kind of animals and also had excellent bedside manners, so did the technicians. I took them again last week just for a nail trimming with the technicians and to my surprise the doctor also performs a quick check up on them. Because of this, we were able to find out early that one of them has gained significant weight and was put on a diet. Just on time so it would avoid complications. I was nice surprised as I only expected them to be in and out. I am very glad I started taking our two little babies there. This is our first time owning guinea pigs and big box stores (we got them from one of the big chain stores) won’t tell you everything you need to know about these type of pets and actually sell you things that are harmful for them. So I am very glad I found this office and decided to bring them in. I can see myself taking them here throughout their entire lives and having two healthy guinea pigs for years to come

I would highly recommend Avian & Exotic. I am confident that my three rabbits are receiving expert care from Dr. Rich. One of my rabbits (Emett) has E. Cunuculi and Dr. Rich explained everything so that I understand and answered all of my questions. Not only do I feel that the vet care is top tier, but the staff are very friendly and welcoming! I would like to say the staff and overall place was excellent and beyond what we expected. From our regular check up for our furr baby to boarding him here. They took well care of our furr baby. They were very professional and polite. I would definitely recommend this place of business with your animals. My pet rabbit Peanut was well taken care of and will definitely come back!

This was my baby’s 1st Vet visit & it was a great experience. The only problem I had was the lady picking my girls shed, but other than that I have no complaints. With COVID you have to wear a mask & wait in your car until they’re ready, but the wait isn’t that long. Pics of my bearded dragon Lubanita aka LuLu b/c she’s so cute & did so good 😊

I’ve been taking my rabbit here the past few years, and the staff has made us feel like family. Last weekend, my rabbit was very sick, and the staff let me bring him in after hours. They did everything they could to help Carter, but he sadly passed away from a tumor. Dr. Rich and his staff were very comforting during this time, and even after our last visit, Dr. Rich and his staff reached out to send their condolences. I highly recommend bringing your pet to this loving and trustworthy team!

Thank you so much to the doctors and staff for saving my bird! My 20 year old cockatiel had to have his wing amputated because of a growth under his wing that was suspected to be cancer. From the 1st emergency visit they kept in contact via text and we're very quick to reply with any questions and concerns. My bird only stayed 1 night with them after surgery. On the 2nd day of being home he was already acting 💯 like himself and had already adjusted to having only 1 wing. Me and my bird couldn't be happier with the care and outcome.

I bring my ferrets to this vet, and here I know they are in excellent hands! My ferrets have been seen by both Dr. Rich and Dr. Pence, and both veterinarians are intelligent and excellent. When I brought my first ferret, Cannoli, here to receive his third distemper vaccination, he ended up having a delayed reaction to the vaccination a few hours after I left the vet and took him home. I immediately contacted the vet, and Dr. Rich was extremely caring and passionate to make sure Cannoli would be okay. He said that what happened to Cannoli is rare and that he wanted me to bring Cannoli back to the vet asap to get checked. Not only did he examine Cannoli, but he also took Cannoli home for the night so that he could monitor him and ensure that he was alright. I am beyond grateful for the care that Dr. Rich gave to him! He really went above and beyond to monitor Cannoli. If you are looking to bring your pet here, I highly recommend it!

Yes this vet is pricey. Dr Pence saved one of my rats this week and Dr Rich saved the other. If you want a Maybach you have to pay the price for the best. These veterinarians are the absolute best. I visited Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital for the first time today. After 20 plus years with the same vet in my hometown I've become increasingly dissatisfied with the service my macaw received there. The 65 minute drive is well worth it. Excellent interaction between my parrot and the vet and his assistant, Annabelle is wonderful. I can't say enough about the complete exam, the beak and nail trim with no seizure, the overall handling of my bird. The price was less than what I have been paying for a much longer exam and a wonderful result.

Review updated January 5, 2022 - Please read in entirety. 🐢 Attempted to make an appointment for my red eared slider (turtle) as he was experiencing an urgent illness. I was told by the receptionist that they were booked on appointments for 6 weeks, but that I could make an urgent appointment which, would of course be at a higher cost. I felt that it was just a money scam and sought help elsewhere for my little turtle "Mushy". Well, being this is the only exotic animal clinic in my area, I’m going to go ahead and get my little turtle set up with an appointment. Hopefully the staff and doctor will provide a pleasant experience and put my mind at rest about my little Mushy. I will update my review once I have additional information. I have updated this review to reflect 5 stars. Our experience yesterday with Dr. Rich was amazing. The receptionist contacted me that morning and said that they had a cancelation, so they would be able to see Mushy the same day at a later time. This was excellent for me since it saved me the extra cost of an emergency visit. Everyone was very pleasant and professional. They were under covid restrictions, but I was still able to go into the exam room with my little guy. I was nervous about the situation because Mushy is such a little turtle (17grams), but the technician and Dr. Rich quickly put my mind at ease. The doctor said that Mushy looked great for his age and also took the time to speak with us about diet and specific turtle needs. Mushy was given medicine which, he was not happy about, but if it makes him feel better that's what matters. In conclusion I have to say that this is the only exotic animal clinic we will ever use for Mushy. I could not be happier with the service we received. I definitely recommend this clinic to anyone that has birds or reptiles. I will refrain from making decisions or leaving reviews until I am positive about the business.

This is the best veterinarian I have ever had in all my years of pet companionship. The staff is always pleasant and helpful and the doctors are extremely knowledgeable and resourceful. Dr. Pence does most of my pet care as she specializes in reptiles. She is very compassionate and caring with both the pet and owner and always does what’s best for the pet. I have a lot of experience going to this vet and would recommend them for any type of exotic. They really do try their best to care for your pet but are realistic with animals who are past the point of saving. Prices are comparable to a cat/dog vet so very reasonable imo. Sometimes wait times can be long but that's because they accept emergencies throughout the day which can back up the schedule. Edit to add: extremely sympathetic to losses. Sent me a lovely card with a passed ferret's nose print.

What wonderful staff here. I can’t say enough nice things. They are very knowledgeable and sweet. They took great care of my sun conure Petrie while he was there and I was patiently and nervously waiting outside. They kept me up to date the entire time and They are easy to get to. I agree with Christine R. Ball. I always thought veterinarians are here for injured animals. Apparently not! My pet got injured, I called this clinic and they said they were fully booked and don’t have time to see my pet unless I pay an emergency fee which was $130. I paid and they squeezed me in and received good service, which I am thankful for, but I had to pay that fee…

Both buns go here... the vet and all the staff have been very conscious about getting my creatures in on time and keeping me updated. They have bent over backwards to get me appointments that were convenient for me… I literally could not sing their praises highly enough After reading the negative reviews I have something to say… When you take your animal to a vets office (any vet) be prepared to drop them off for a few hours. Why are you waiting? Go to target, drink your latte, and enjoy your day. Dont expect them to be done asap. Vets cannot expect what will happen during their day... a routine exam goes awry... an emergency flys in or calls... all levels of nonsense. Just save yourself the stress and expect that this could take a bit.

After reading bad reviews about the wait times, I had to come and add a good one. Last year I had a ball python who was egg bound (eggs stuck in oviduct). I brought her in for an emergency visit. They immediately took her to the back, and told me up front that it would probably be awhile. No big deal. I put money down so I could leave to go get some lunch. I was probably there for 2-3 hours before they had a clear prognosis. It was bad, and she died before they could take her to surgery. But here’s the thing... Dr. Rich called me HIMSELF to tell me the news. He took the time. He also took the time to speak with me personally and tell me the chances of surgery even being successful and other information. He was patient, kind, and understanding. He never once made me feel like he was in a hurry or didn’t have time for me, or ever tried to pressure me into anything. And I greatly appreciate that. For those who complain about the time they’re there, keep in mind that there are all kinds of emergencies coming in (like mine) and appointments that need shifting. The same thing happens regularly at an ordinary hospital. There’s only so much they can do. I would swear by Dr. Rich and his team. There’s a reason they don’t have openings for regular appointments for weeks out. They’re GOOD. And they try their best. I live two hours away, in Lafayette. I have another appointment with them for a different snake coming up later this month. If I have to sit for several hours that day, fine by me. They’re absolutely worth the wait.

We met Dr. Rich for the first time yesterday. Our ferret Smokey has adrenal gland disease. Dr. Rich spent a lot of time with us explaining the disease and what to expect. He is very knowledgeable about ferrets and took great care of ours. He was able to implant our ferret with a hormone device that will prohibit the symptoms of the disease. We will definitely never let anyone else treat our ferrets in the future. Can't say enough about Dr. Rich and his staff. Thank you all for a great experience.

I brought in my cockatiel, Chiro, for a general checkup and a nail trim. I was so pleased with how everything went! All of the staff were extremely kind and professional, even when I had to reschedule. Dr. Rich was absolutely awesome, he called me after the appointment to let me know everything that happened during. He even told me that Chiro was serenading the office with his songs! I can tell they were very gentle with my bird, because even though he got his nails trimmed, he was not at all grumpy or upset. In fact, he sang the whole drive home too! I cannot thank this clinic enough for taking such good care of my bird! Chiro and I appreciate you!

I take my 2 macaws and my amazon to Dr Rich and have for the past 3 years. He is amazing my macaws were rescues and we worked together to make sure that they were healthy and turn them around. He is so great with my fids and would recommend him to anyone and he is also known all the way to PA where I got one of my rescues. I have three ferrets. This is the only vet in the southern area between Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana that can even properly examine ferrets. They have helped me with emergency situations and eased my mind through tough times. Dr. Pence and Dr. Rich are great. As well as Beth and the other front desk staff. They always listen to your needs and truly care for the animals. My oldest ferret, Midna, had to have her spleen removed a few months back. I was so worried about her. Dr. Pence was so informative and spoke to me over the phone about the surgery multiple times. She even sent me a photo of Midna after the surgery to ease my mind. Midna is happy and healthy now! Dr Rich and his staff are absolutely the best!!! I called re: using an ultrasonic dog trainer for my pup, but was curious as to whether my Congo Grey would be affected as well, or worse, harmful to him. The receptionist didn't know, but I called 🦜 LSU avian dept. and found out that it can totally be used with the dog and it not affect my parrot (it's beyond their hearing range). PS: I've only had to "beep" my dog 4x since getting this deterrrent... and i got it over 4 weeks ago!!🐶 So i let Dr Rich's office know what i found out and now THAT question has been answered. Thanks to the staff for being so helpful in assisting me to find this info.! 🙂

Dr. Rich and Dr. Pence are both the best doctors for ferrets I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. My little ferret had hypoglycemia and ended up with cancer. By the time I found them it was too late. They treated him with chemo and gave my little boy almost 7 extra months with us. After 9 years of being in the family it was agony to say goodbye, but when I saw his pain it was time to let go. Dr. Pence was right there with me to help him go home. I have never seen such love and heartfelt empathy before. Especially for a pet that was not hers but mine. If I had only known them sooner. They truly care for all our special pets, believe me I know!

With Covid still around, curbside waiting is still implemented for safety, but the Dr.’s and staff still make sure to keep you informed during the visit and treat your pet as their own. I can sit in my car and have my mind at ease knowing my pet is getting the best care!

Dr. Rich is the only vet I've ever taken my pet to. He is highly recommended for exotic pets, especially bunnies. Very inviting staff. They even have a dog that hangs out in the office and delivers paper work to the front desk. Bunnies are always in the waiting room to entertain you while you wait. The only thing I didn't like was the parking...it's on a busy service road, but you can always just park around the corner on the less busy side. I recommend dr. Rich to anyone with a pet bunny for sure.

We had an emergency in the middle of the night. I was afraid for Lucy. The doctor called me back and reassured me it was ok to bring my Guinea pig in the morning. They squeezed us in and took good care of her. I even get to meet other pet owners with similar pets and stories. I'm so glad they were there for me even in the middle of the night. I would never think of going anywhere else for my pet needs.

Words cannot express how amazing Dr. Rich is! I had always heard wonderful things about him. I live in Denham Springs, and had brought my bearded dragon to All Pets. The vet there treated my beardies tail and he nearly lost the end of it. I then decided to bring him to Dr. Rich, and he was amazing! Gave him some meds and his tail was better in the next two days! He gives amazing advice and I recommend him to EVERYONE! Doesn't matter if it's a bit of a drive for you. It's more than worth it!

They are the sweetest, most knowledgeable, and kindest people ever!!! Our little boy was having trouble going to the bathroom and we weren't sure why. Dr. Rich instantly took him back for an x-ray while his wife sat with us and chatted about how awesome our ferret is. Turns out Azriel had a bladder stone. Dr. Rich was going to schedual a surgery for later in the week but after trying to flush the stone back into his bladder he realized it was more serious. He told us he was going to do the surgery tonight and take him to his home afterwards to observe him. I never thought a vet would take an animal to their personal home to make sure he was ok. We had the best experience and we know we can trust him for any other needs we may have regarding our ferrets. I can't get over how kind and concerned they both were about the well being of our little furry friend. I would reccomend Dr. Rich to anyone with a small animal or bird. He is the BEST!!!
