I've taken Nina (my cutie cat) to Univ. West since I adopted her about a year ago. We've had an amazing experience with their team from the start and this past week they blew me away. Before going out-of-town, I had discovered an area for concern on Nina's neck. As a first time pet owner, I was overcome with worry that something serious might happen while I was away. I called to schedule an appointment on short notice and the staff was able to squeeze me. Katie promptly addressed all of my concerns — giving me the peace of mind to go out of town confident that I have a healthy kitty at home. I'm so thankful for the support and care that we from the University West team!

I appreciated the fast, friendly service. Our doctor was very patient explaining the process and found an additional dental issue that we didn't know about-and solved it promptly! I appreciated the check-in after surgery and the overall ease of scheduling and facilitating 2 neuters. Puppies were not happy with me, but recovered quickly after the procedure. Thank you!

We LOVED our visit to this clinic! Dr. Clark took amazing care of our dog. We needed to come in for an emergency and were brand new clients, but they fit us in right away. Then we received amazing treatment: X-Ray, blood work, fluids, and meds all in about an hour. Our little guy started feeling better the very next day! Also, this is one of the most affordable vets I’ve been too. We’ll be bringing our sweet boy here from now on!

I took my cat in for his annual wellness visit and shots. The staff greeted us and got us into a room quickly. Dr. Martz and his assistant, Mark, were very kind and thorough. I had all of my questions answered. The visit took less than 20 minutes. I have been bringing my cats to this clinic for several years and will continue to do so. I have always been happy with the care.

My husband and I have been taking our 3 pets (2 cats, 1 dog) to University West for a few years now and have nothing but great things to say. They’ve always given our animals great care, they are up front honest about cost and procedures and they are very affordable. They have also treated our animals in urgent situations without an appointment, which saved us from having to go to the expensive emergency vet. It is a small office and since they prioritize animals in urgent situations, there have been a few occasions where we had to wait well past our appointment time to be seen, but since they had seen our animals without an appointment I wasn’t bothered by it. The staff was also working very hard to make sure everyone got seen, and let us know why the wait time was so long.

I wouldn't take my babies anywhere else ever. Dr. Takes and Dr. Kay are amazing and they CARE! Also the girls at the counter are so awesome, so nice and very caring and they sympathize with what your going through with your pet. They have hearts which is so important. When I had to put my baby girl down last year they sent a sympathy card and that meant so much to me. Today I will give a 4 star because although busy as always, they got me right in and out. Cathy is always a rockstar in this area and my dog loves her so it's much easier for us when she is working. Otherwise they need more staff. I have waited 10 min to pay my bill which was hard with a puppy

After a tumble down a flight of stairs at 11pm, my 100 pounder was still having obvious pain bearing weight in the morning. Walking but crying. University West could get him in at 1030, but called as soon as an 8:15 cancellation came in. Just bruised, no fractures or ACL tears, but he’s 10 years old and still my baby. I can’t say enough about the thorough, prompt care he received. (Disclosure: I’m a human surgeon and picky as hell.).

The prices are fair and they don't seem to gouge prices. All the vets and techs we have worked with have been awesome. I am not from the area and for that fact the state. University West Pet Clinic went above and beyond my expectations. My dog who is my life had an emergency and needed to be seen immediately. I live 5 hours away and had no way of being able to take my dog back and be seen in a reasonable time needed for his injuries. Kathy who answers the phone was able to calm me down and reassure me my dog would be taken care of. Alison the vet tech was amazing! It I could multiply her I would, not only did she love my dog like her own but she helped calm my nerves and reassure me that they were going to take care of my dog. Dr. Takes diagnosed the issue and was able to plan my dog’s surgery. Dr. Takes took time to answer any and all questions. Dr. Martz is my hero and I will be forever in debt to him. His ability to do dental work is superb. I cannot thank everyone enough for their genuine care towards my dog. When I’m in Iowa I will only go to University West Pet Clinic.

We have been going to this vet for many years and have always had a good experience. I recently took our sheepdog in to have her teeth looked at because one was bothering her and the vet also realized she had a urinary tract infection when our dog had a nervous per on the floor and the vet could smell the bacteria. So glad we took her in and getting all her issues fixed

The folks at University Pet Clinic have always had our concerns as their concerns and provided caring and professional health care for our dogs at every turn. We have been going to them for over 10 years based on the recommendations of others who say the same things. Due to going there this long we have inevitably had to deal with the end of life for one of our dogs and they truly cared as much for him as we did and were supportive all along the way. Cannot say enough good things about the staff.

We had a great experience here! Our 4 month old puppy is a little timid, but the staff was great at making him feel comfortable. Dr. Lisa Takes was great with him, and answered all of our questions and gave some great advice! Reasonably priced as well. So happy we chose this clinic.

I absolutely love the vet's here. I have been going to them for years and they are always wonderful with my dogs. My sweet Meeka recently has had some bladder issues and I am extreme worry wart. They always deal with Meeka in a gentle way which makes me feel better because she is so shy and scared of people. They always explain everything and make me feel better when either of the dogs are sick. They are wonderful!

The staff here is so friendly and knowledgeable - everyone from the front desk to the doctors. My pup was having some issues and they worked us into a fairly full schedule. The diagnosis and treatment was spot-on, because after two days of really poor digestive issues leading up to the visit, she was doing better within one hour of leaving there. They even called the next day to find out how she was doing, and I was happy to report she was back to being her old (overly energetic!) self! As an added bonus, their prices seem to be extremely reasonable compared to a lot of others.

I took my dog to meet her new vet yesterday. Dr Takes and the staff at University West Pet Clinic were welcoming and professional. We are new to Des Moines, so finding the right vet was my number one priority. Dr. Takes came to us highly recommended by a long time client. He insisted that I could find no one better to care for Coco, my 6 lb chihuahua, than Dr Takes. She was very good with Coco as were the staff who greeted us when we first arrived. The staff person who trimmed Coco's nails was also extremely friendly and nice. We are happy to recommend University West Pet Clinic to everyone.

We are usually go to Starch on University near Drake, but on two occasions the vets have scheduled surgeries at this location. Our experience at both locations has been wonderful. We have owned a lot of pets over the years and they have all received care from these two locations. The doctors are amazing and kind. The other staff members are incredible. Good staff but because I questioned providers evaluation communication was strainedI did not get answers to what I should do differently and it was clear she did not like to be questioned . In past have always had good experience. Progress note made by provider was judgmental and unprofessional. Will get another opinion with some good recommendations. Has been hard when puppy was ill and have had to go to acute care clinics as they have not been willing to work her in! Never see same vet!

Dr. Joel DeJaynes listened carefully, asked relevant questions, made a call to the pharmacy, gently examined my cat, and explained everything so I could understand what he said, and his reasoning. Dr DeJaynes is a wonderful example of what all the veterinarians are like at Starch Pet Hospital and University West Pet Clinic. I have been taking my pets there for over 40 years and I always feel my pets receive quality care and gentle compassion. I wouldn't go anywhere else!

I’ve used University West Pet Clinic services for over 30 years. The veterinarians have always provided professional and attentive care of my pets. Whether for routine check ups & vaccinations, if they were ill or at their end of life, the doctors and staff show my pet and me that we matter. And a great perk. I use the grooming services on site and they do a great job. I can drop off my pet at 7:30 for grooming, get vaccinations or treatment if needed during the day so by 3.00 I can pick my fur baby back up all taken care of.

We were moving and needed to see if there was something to give are cat to make the trip out of state less traumatic for her. I of course waited till the day before leaving to think of this. There was no issue getting us in that afternoon and updating her shots as well as the prescription for an medication for the 20 hr trip. I have used this clinic for about 15 years and they have helped me through an uncommon surgery to the regular spay/neuters. They also were diligent and gave me straight facts when they found cancer in my dog that made sure I had realistic ideas in my head but also gave me information to meet with an oncologist to make our own decision. It's the place I feel most "at home" with for vet care.

From the start of my working with them - they have gone above and beyond to help me with my pet bunny! The receptionist went out of her way to catch the rabbit specialist to get me in asap. The tech went above and beyond playing with my bunny and offering to trim her nails for no charge. And the vet called me immediately with results, explained the best way for me to work through the situation with honest advice for what is best for us. I have an upcoming surgery for my bunny and I feel comfortable knowing she will be in their care! All so very well priced. All fair. Very appreciative of these people and this vet clinic!

We rescued Bear (Berak) in August. What we didn't realize is that Bear was a reactive dog, and we didn't know what to do or how to go about educating him. We had a slight incident the first time Bear was brought in after being adopted by us and Dr. Hamm was amazing with him and provided education and ideas to help Bear. I recently brought Bear in to talk about nail clipping and how to go about it since he's still nervous. Dr. Hamm walked me through the process and the vet tech was even willing to try without the anti anxiety since this time around Bear wasn't so reactive and even let them pet him and be close to him. Even at check out the ladies were amazing with him and slowly approached Bear to give him a treat. (He may be reactive but he will pause for a good treat!) I can't say enough great things about this clinic, staff is truly amazing and Bear thanks everyone too for being so understanding!!

I was in with a very anxious cat for routine shots when she relieved herself in her carrier. The staff was so helpful in doing a quick clean up of her carrier to get us home. It was much appreciated. The doctor took plenty of time to discuss my concerns and offer suggestions.

The girls (dogs), and I love seeing Dr. Takes. My German Shepherd hates the vet, but Dr. Takes always knows how to calm her down, and get whatever needs done accomplished. If you need a vet you can trust, and won’t over medicate, who truly want the best for your animals, definitely seek out these outstanding professionals.

The staff and veterinarians are kind and polite. The prices are fair and there are many food and health choices available. My dogs are always treated warmly despite my terrier being shy and my great dane being a grumpy old man toward other visitors. I feel as though the waiting room is somewhat small and doesn't lend itself to helping visitors avoid confrontation. Otherwise, every visit is enjoyable for myself and more importantly my pets.

I have been taking my pets here for the past 13 years. The vet staff are all very friendly and genuinely care for the animals. I know it's weird to say, but my pups love to go to the vet. The staff takes good care of them, shows them love and affection, and makes them comfortable in not so comfy situations. We have been going here for over 20 years. They have always taken very good care of our dogs. They have been through the good and bad with us. Our puppy hurt her foot really bad. I called the clinic around 3:30 in the afternoon on a Friday. After explaining the situation, and despite the clinic being completely booked for the day, they told us to come in at 4:30, without hesitation. My cats are of the senior age now. I feel like routine checkups require a bit more effort and thoroughness once a feline is of the senior age. I was pretty much rushed in and out. Due to the Covid outbreak, I needed to wait outside for a technician to come and get my dog. She was prompt and did a great job putting Kinnick at ease. Kinnick was there for routine vaccinations and a groom. He was a hot mess when I dropped him off and returned as a cute little dog. Very affordable groom; $55 for a bath, clip, cut and nails cut. The same technician returned him to me. The protocol is that the owner meet the technician at the door. I have difficulty maneuvering curbs, so the technician brought him to me. Also, the vet contacted me and spent a good 10-15 minutes speaking with me about the list of concerns I gave them. This is the best veterinarian group I have ever used. We have taken four of our dogs there and will never change. I would encourage you to check out University West Pet Clinic!

I am posting a neutral review because on this particular visit, I specifically called and scheduled an appointment with Dr Takes, whom we love and have been seeing for about 15 years. She splits her time between Univ W and Starch near Drake. When I arrived for my appointment, I was told that my appointment would be with a different doctor whom neither I nor my dog knew and Dr Takes had two other people before me if I did want to see her. We left and rescheduled at Starch. Not convenient, nor did it meet our needs. Overall, I appreciate good things about University West. They have issued prescriptions for me for pick-up, seen our cats and our dog regularly, and we love Dr Takes. This appointment did not happen and was not scheduled correctly.

In amidst of the stressful time our world is experiencing right now, University West Pet Clinic remained calm and caring. They gave email updates on what to expect and the explained the social distancing initiative being taken. They strive to keep the community and pets safe. Allie was still able to have her scheduled surgery, and Dr. Martz as always was compassionate and thorough with her care. I'm not a regular customer of this clinic only because i live 2 hours away, but I chose this clinic and Dr. Martz based on great feedback from my mother who had taken her pets there, affordability, cleanliness, and they gentle way they treated Allie for her consultation. I felt I was a part of all the decision making, Dr. Martz took extra time with me to ensure I was well informed and understood the imbricated suture procedure, and frequently follows up with me, to, "see how our patient is doing". Allie had torn her CCL (ACL in humans). Depending on the severity and if the meniscus is involved, most dogs just need rest and restricted activity to heal. In Allie's case, her meniscus was "mush" and without the surgery, would have had lifelong pain from the deteriorated meniscus catching on the knee joint. There are a few procedures available for this type of injury, and I chose Dr. Martz to do his imbricated suture procedure because he was very well experienced, it was least invasive, least expensive, and historical to have great outcomes. Recovery time is based on the pet with varying factors, and Dr. Martz and his technicians did an excellent job answering all of my questions and addressing my concerns. Even though unfortunately, there are unforseen risks that may or may not happen with any surgery period, Allie was a very rare case where the suture was a bit too tight. My pup is strong and it didn't seem to bother her too much, but after enough time for her leg to heal, we recently went back in to have the imbricated suture removed. Dr. Martz felt at this point it wasn't helping her anymore as she was mostly recovered (again, every dog and human will always have a variable healing time and reaction to surgery), and we agreed it was best to remove it to minimize any future complications in her knee joint. With both of her surgeries she was well cared for. Allie is a pitbull, and many people have a negative stigma on this beautiful gentle breed including many of the other veterinarian clinics we visited over last summer. University West Pet Clinic which is a branch of Starch Vet Clinic, treated Allie as all pets deserve to be treated, without stigmatized judgement, fear, or dollar signs. I've taken our 16 year old Lhasa Apso to Starch many years ago before he passed, and I remember feeling the same way then as I do now with University WPC; a place of excellence, genuinely caring and compassionate, intelligent staff, clean, accommodating, affordable, and relieved that this was the best decision to come here for my pets care. Allie continues to thrive and do well, and I have Dr. Martz and the wonderful staff at UWPC to thank and appreciate. I hope this review helps others out there who are looking for the best place to take their loved furbabies for their healthcare needs. If I lived closer, I would definitely make this my #1 place of choice, it definitely will remain my #1 place of choice for any surgeries she would ever need. Love & Light, Nurse Grace

My 13 year old boxer fell while getting off the couch and twisted her nail inside her nail bed, she was bleeding and shaking. I called them, they had no more openings and already worked in 3 other emergencies, the staff asked and Lisa Takes, DVM agreed to see her. We have gone to Dr. Clark for nearly 20 years, through a cat and two dogs. She just performed a much-needed surgery on our bulldog with the usual outstanding results. If you want a vet clinic that has professional and understanding staff who are always accommodating and a vet who takes time with you and your pet, I can't recommend University West Pet Clinic highly enough!
