I have gone to Starch for years and always get great care. Today was no exception. Sloan, who took my call, made my appointment and then roomed my cat and I, was very friendly and professional. She was great!!! I can’t say enough about Dr. Kay!!! She was very thorough, answered all questions and wrote down the treatment plan and it’s options. I’m there a lot with 4 cats and a dog and I’m never disappointed!!!

I have been to a few other vet facilities in my years of having cats and even though I live 20 minutes away and it would be better on the gas tank to go to a vet in my town, I have had such a good experience with the staff and veterinarians at Starch that I am willing to drive the distance for their care. They’re affordable, they don’t push medicine or surgery on me, and they are good to my kitties. They explain when I have questions but also get me in and out in a reasonable amount of time.

I love Starch! I’ve been disappointed by several vets before finding them and I couldn’t be happier with the service from Starch’s staff. The tech staff are helpful and chatty and it makes going in to grab food or supplies a nice visit. The vets that I’ve met have been so nice, they actually want to hear about your pet and care about their behavior and habits. The prices are good too! I would definitely recommend Starch.

Our elderly Beagle needed emergency surgery to remove bladder stones. We were referred to a few places by our vet. Unfortunately, those places were going to charge $4000-$6000. We had a family discussion and decided to put him down. No one wanted to but the cost was not in our budget. The next day I decided I had to try and do more. I called 12 different vets, none of whom had the facility/equipment to perform the surgery. I called Starch and to my surprise they told me they could perform the surgery. Of course I had to get a rough estimate so we could determine if we could manage the cost. They gave me an estimate that was 1/2 the cost of what the others are charging AND they got him in the same day. From the moment I started talking with the employee's at Starch, I know we would all be in good hands. The employee's we dealt with gave us as much information as they could. They answered our questions as well as they could. But no-one knew the surgery would take 5 hours. Doctor Clark called us at 9:00pm (after the surgery was done) to give us an update. We were told his bladder would have erupted in a few days if not for the surgery. We were given copies of the XRays so we could see the massive amount of stones. They spent a great deal of time going over the after surgery care we need to provide. Of course the cost was higher than the rough estimate but still within our budget. Everyone we talked with was just AWESOME! The location is not close to us but we are changing vets because Starch took great care of Tucker!! They saved his life!!! Our family is ever so grateful to Doctor Clark and all who helped Tucker.

My cat, Öskar, just had his yearly check up/rabies vaccine. A concern emerged about his losing significant weight, and she was so kind to me, and gentle with him as we had to extend the visit and do tests. She also explained all the tests and (later) results in language I could understand. It was a hard visit for my cat, and Dr. Clark showed concern for him and comforted him with hugs and scratches as if he were her own animal. I have nothing but very enthusiastic praise for this wonderful veterinarian.

Clean, efficient, and friendly. They have a nice pet portal but wish puppy’s upcoming vaccination appointments would have been offered to be scheduled vs me seeing reminders in portal. Update: Get it can be standard to not call owners for negative test results but wish companies went the extra mile to just call, text, or email saying negative. Simple email would also serve as a nice record for other businesses that need proof of result.

Beyond a five star review! My dog is very neurotic. Hes not a fan of people or dogs, so you can imagine how vet visits go. They are so accommodating. The staff were so sweet and so kind! Forever blessed to have found this place. He was examined and they didn't order unnecessary tests. I would hands down recommend this place to ANYONE! Shot, exam and medication was ONLY 96.00.

Divinely Guided

My animals have been going here for years. Always a really good experience. My poor puppy got sick all of a sudden and couldn’t stop throwing up. I was in a dilemma because I didn’t wanna leave him home, but I had to go to work. I took him in that day and they allowed him to stay for most of the day while I was at work to do test on him. It was a very stressful day but they made it 100 times better. I don’t know if that’s a common thing they do but it’s very much appreciate it. Kept me updated all day! Love this place won’t go anywhere else.

This was our very first visit with Starch and it definitely won’t be our last! Our new puppy had never been seen and we needed to get him in asap they were able to get us in the next day and from the momment we opened the door the entire staff was so welcoming and caring :) I had my daughters (4&7) with me and they not only answered my questions but my daughters also. It felt good to know that they cared about how they were feeling about their puppies “Dr visit” also. I’m so thankful they were recommended to us by friends!

Our big cat Henry was having problems. We had previously spent roughly $3k two weeks prior to the day we went to Starch, all at an emergency vet (including 3 days of staying at the vet), trying to get him better. It finally got to the point where my wife and I were forced to make "that" decision, and man is that a rough decision to make, but he just wasn't getting better and didn't seem like he wanted too. We decided, and called Starch the next morning and explained the situation. They were very understanding and got us an appointment for 20 minutes later. The staff was all very caring. I was still unsure about the decision, and said so. So the assistant went and got the vet and she came in and didnt give us any BS and didnt try to sell us anything else. Just gave it to us straight, said in our position she would do the same thing. Very caring people, theybput us in a room right away when we arrived, they have you pay in the room so everything is taken care of. They explain what they are doing while they are doing it. For the type of experience it was, it was a good experience. I would recommend Starch to any body that doesn't want to get overpriced treatment and wants the info and no BS. Seriously, good people as well.

I had such a great experience with the staff and customer service I received. My dog and cat went to get spayed here on the same day and they are recovering with no problems what so ever! The cat seems so much happier since she has been spayed and has been extremely loving and sweet. The dog hasn’t had any trouble with her incisions and takes the medicine well with the pill cover treats I bought at this office. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Thank you guys!

I rarely review places but Starch has been so consistently great I feel like I should share my experience. I first found them when my small dog was incredibly bloated and I found out from another vet she would need to be fixed to stop her from continually filling with fluid. They weren't sure if it was simply fluid or something more serious (it's been a while and I'm no vet so sorry if that's confusing) so technically the surgery would be an emergency surgery and I was quoted 5000 dollars for her to have the emergency surgery, be sedated, stay over the weekend, etc. I absolutely couldn't afford that so I called every other vet I could for an estimate. Everywhere else was around 1000 to 2000 dollars until I called Starch. They quoted me 700 and were able to get her in the next day. The surgery went super well, the doctor was sure to explain everything afterwards, and she was home within a few hours (the fluid ended up not being serious). We've gone back there ever since. Each veterinarian we meet is super nice and helpful each time and the prices are great compared to the old one we went to. Recently I was worried about my dog and online their appointments were filled a week out so I called to see if I could come in (this was at 4:15 and they closed in about an hour) and they got me in that day for only an extra 20 dollars. I told them I had very limited funds and the doctor made sure to cut out unnecessary tests and explain each test so I could choose which ones I wanted to do. She prescribed some medication and my dog was feeling better within the hour.

My kitty went from OK to sick almost overnight. I called for an appointment and they were able to squeeze me in the same day. I was even able to see the veterinarian of my choice. The receptionists were able to direct us (my sick kitty and me) to an exam room right away. The veterinarian came in shortly. My kittly was thoroughly examined and lab work was required. The results were back in 20 minutes and my kitty was treated and released. Throughout, everyone was very kind and gentle. I felt secure in the knowledge that we were receiving loving, professional care during the entire visit. The following day my kitty was eating again and more herself. I have been going to Starch Pet Hospital and University West Pet Clinic for 37 years, and I wouldn't dream of seeing anyone else. These guys are the best!

The staff up front was extremely kind and patient as well answering my billing questions. My cat loves the veterinarian she was wonderful and the nursing staff always takes amazing care of my fur babies. Family member also had a cat that used to see another vet at a different clinic that was misdiagnosed for a year for severe allergies that turned out to be an aggressive nasal cancer. I brought him to this clinic and they took the best care of him and in the end the vet actually came to the house and put him down in the comfort of his home when he could no longer be with us. Was a special comfort for our cat and us in a terrible time that the staff made better for us and had his ashes ready in a beautiful box quickly. Love this clinic.

Have taken my dog here multiple times, both for routine check up and emergencies. They always get Stella in quickly, always answer questions throughly, and help both Stella and me feel better when something is going wrong. The staff is compassionate, caring, and all seem to enjoy working with animals and helping them feel their best ASAP. Will always quote you in advance to manage costs and give alternatives for home option when available.

Starch is the best! Dr. Kay has been so helpful with trying to figure out what is going on with my puppy. She has always been more than willing to answer my questions. I've talked to her on the phone every week since I got my puppy so she could help monitor symptoms without me having to bring her in every time.They don't push unnecessary tests or products. Reception staff have always been helpful and polite. The building is clean and the waiting room hasn't been overcrowded when I've been there.

I have been visiting this vet for a little over a year by a recommendation from a friend, and I have found the best vet clinic in the Des Moines area! The vet technicians are very friendly, and knowledgeable about the care of your pet. You really build a personal relationship with the techs and love each per that comes through the door. The receptionists are very welcoming, professional, and make it easy to check in and check out. They are extremely vital to the clinic. Their groomer, Erica, is extremely friendly, and well rounded with certain cuts from distinct breeds, and adds care and love to each pet she grooms. Lastly, the amount of knowledge and care each doctor has is unbelievable! My 1 year old Golden recently had a mast cell tumor removed at the clinic, and the doctors were thorough with explaining the diagnosis, procedure, and what to expect after the surgery. After his procedure, we ran into some loose stools with my pup, and I was able to discuss treatment options with the doctors. They have helped tremendously! The amount of knowledge and care put into this unbelievable. It really eases this over protective dog mom.

I said how much is it for an exam they said around $50 i was like o.m.g and they were able to get me in the next day like woah. I called my son to tell him we were going to have to our Saint Bernard because they wanted $4000-7000 for emergency surgery. We did not have that amount. I told him our decision. Ashley made calls to Dr. Takesx and a vet tech. By the time I reached ISU to say my goodbyes to Ginger Dr. Takes was in the phone with the ISU vet telling them she had staff on the way to pick up Ginger, and they would be coming in super early to do her surgery. They were able to do the surgery within a budget I could afford. This was a serious surgery and they did not have to do what they did for us. We are behind grateful that our girl is still with us. Without the staff at Starch we would not have our girl with us anymore.

If I wasn't there to put my cat to sleep I would probably would rated it higher, but was upset so I wasn't paying much attention to my surroundings. I remember that the vet was nice and patient with me. They did try to save his life, but his liver started shutting down. They were a bit expensive to those on a fixed income. But then did the personal touch to send sympathy card to me that each had signed at the clinic.

Called starch first thing in the morning after holding my sick rabbit to my chest all night and said I was desperate. They got ahold of Dr. Takes who agreed to see her right away. I got there, an immediate x ray showed GI stasis, and I knew it was dire. They did everything they could but I lost my little girl a few hours later after 5 years of a happy life with me. I am forever thankful for the staff for treating her and my grieving self with dignity, and accepting her in their care when no one else in Des Moines would. I wish there were 24 hour emergency vets that could see rabbits, but Starch is the next best thing. Pragmatically, the cost for her critical care was very reasonable. I wish human healthcare was that cheap. They aren't usually busy, and the staff is very hardworking. I'll come back here if I ever decide to adopt again.

I even had to make an emergency stop in because a groomer clipped one of her nails too short, and thus she started bleeding badly out of nowhere on our way home. we have three cats and a dog and have gone to starch for years - nice people that know their animals - we get reminders for treatment when due which helps a lot - they have a policy that you would never see at a "people" hospital - a volume discount! if you bring in 3 or more pets for treatment you get a 20% discount - we also use the dog groomer there too - our dog doesn't like grooming much but gets along great with the starch groomer Very sad update - In October 2015 i took our dog to Starch for a grooming - all seem fine but we got a call after about 2 hours saying Sugar Bear had died - the vet was very distraught as we were, and said it was probably a hidden brain aneurysm - they tried their best to save her but it was unsuccessful - we lost a member of the family but put absolutely no blame on the vet or Starch - they took care of the cremation and returning the ashes home - we still have three cats that will continue receiving the excellent care that Starch provides

As I write this review, please note I have been recently dealing with some out of normal life anxieties. I am a heart patient. I mean well, just giving my personal point of view based off of direct experiences. Please consider the days could be bad and influences from unknown things are always possible. I try to give second chances as often as we can, speaking logically. I have gone to MacCrae, Heartland, and Starch. I didn't get as much care as I got for similar charges as MacCrae gave us, with the exception of people from Starch. I have to say they haven't exactly been rude either. Starch is way better than Heartland ( we live a walk away from Heartland, but the cost plus treatment by staff we received at Heartland twice caused us to choose to go a little farther down the road to Starch) We have been to Starch 5-7 times between both animals this year. Heartland twice. MacCrae had me using them for almost ten years with prior pets, before our move. We have finally decided after several visits, Starch has so e very amazing people. Dr. Take has passion for the field, and is a very caring human also! We left and we're walking away from the clinic after we were done, and " Phil" ( female) ran almost a block after us to make sure some keys that were left were not ours. Basically, in today's life it came down to the many visits wieghed together to decide once and for all this ( Starch Pet Hospital) will be the perfect clinic for our fur babies! They have more reasonable prices also!
