Reviews of Chicago Canine Rescue
Addie Lazzell
I volunteer and have adopted my dog from CCR, both experiences have been wonderful! Everyone here clearly adores dogs!
As a volunteer, the dogs you're given are going to align with your experience or abilities. New volunteers or people with children might get easier dogs at first, and as you walk more dogs you might get someone with a bit more energy. The workers know how to make sure the dogs are getting the best walking time. It's a great place to volunteer!
As an adopter, the process had lots of transparency. We were 3rd on the list for the dog that we ended up getting but the adoption process went forward despite the others interested in the dog we applied for. Shaina was clear with when the references got back to her and when we would be able to hear about our adoption status. It's clear that the shelter wants the dogs to go to the right home for them, it may mean that you won't get the first dog you applied for (I didn't!) but you will get the right dog for you! There was so much information about the specific dog and about adopting a dog in general, you will feel supported throughout the adoption process and feel
The dog we adopted was at the end of her heat cycle and the shelter scheduled and paid for her to spayed, including the medications she needed after, we just had to show up. This was a great relief among the other planning and expenses that come with adopting a dog.
CCR is full of people who love and know dogs so well. It's a fantastic place to support with volunteering, donations, or adopting one of their wonderful dogs.

Friendly staff, great place to find a great dog. We found our fury friend here and can’t say enough about what a great dog he is, if you’re doubtful about getting a rescue dog, don’t think twice. So many of these dogs are looking for love, companionship and a forever home. This rescue shelter also offers great volunteer opportunities to walk dogs and to help with fundraising events like at local chicago food and music fests. I hope CCR is around for a long time!

Came here today to walk dogs! So easy, girls at the front desk checked me in right away. I walked two dogs separately and both, Bruce and Kelly, were awesome and super friendly!

$350 For a "troubled" background adult pit bull.
I understand now why your troubled dogs are with you 3 plus years.
Thank You for not putting them down.
If it was just for me we would work it out. I LOVE pits,
But with a 9 YO Goddaughter can't take a chance.
Again Thanks and Thanks for taking care of the less loved breeds
Silvia Gowin
This rescue is amazing! They did a wonderful job in making sure our dog was a good match for the dog we were interested in, they answered all our questions and concerns thoroughly, and were very friendly! Definitely a rescue we would come back to if we ever wanted to adopt another dog.
Bill Starzynski
I got my dog hear! My best friend and companion! Roxie!
Nancy DeMik
It's our one year anniversary! We adopted our sweet dog in July 2014. The entire staff was excellent; from the directors who approved us, to the volunteers who set us up for our initial walk around the neighborhood, and checked us out at the end. The process was handled very efficiently. We ended up with a wonderful dog and companion.
Sharia Soto
I personally volunteer here. Great rescue ans great staff.
Don Rogers
Great organization with an important mission. Their facility has ample parking. Staff are friendly. You can sign up to walk the dogs by filling out a form and leaving your ID with them. They take donations at the front door.
Rifkie Muskat
Always good to go to few shelters before choosing a dog as you can meet more breeds and expand your options, that's if you are not sure what dog to get.. this was one of the places we checked out.. very impressed!!
Matthew Scaro
God bless the employees and volunteers at Chicago Canine rescue. The way they care for animals and ensure they find loving homes is beautiful. After volunteering, we found our new family member from them and could not be happier. These people truly care. These dogs are all kept in clean environments, fed well (really well,) walked and loved. While that first visit did break my heart, it was only because of how many loving dogs we were choosing from. They supported me and my wife throughout the entire process and will continue to receive ours in return. I cannot thank them enough for all they do.

Words cannot describe the joy we had got from visiting CCR. We were looked to adopt and looking a dog a bit older. We visited many shelters and have had terrible experience in particular to Paws.
We did more research and found CCR. We stopped in during their available time to see the dogs and fell in love with the staff and the environment. They are very helpful and eager to get a the pups a forever home. We walked in and felt the homey feel. Being younger and having a kid seems to not leave a good impression but at CCR this was not the case. They were very informative on what dog would best fit our family without an issue.
If and when you find a dog you like they allow you to walk and get comfortable. (They always look for walkers)
We fell in love with a precious Aspen as she's been an amazing addition.
Key pointers: adoption takes about a week.
- Reference and proof of housing.
- adoption fee of around $300 unless sponsored.
Donate Donate Donate. They have the best staff
Alissa “AC” Cal
They are a great shelter that really cares about each and every dog that goes through their doors. They always need donations so if you have old towels, extra paper towels or dog food (grain free) please call ahead and see what they need. Parking can be tight and the staff is super busy but always helpful.

Darcie, I have to tell you we have Winter since Monday night and she is great. She only had one accident in the house. She loves to be in our big backyard. She runs like the dickens. She gets along with other dog Logan very well. She is very lovable and believe me she wants the love back. She is very precious. She sleeps with us at night, but in the middle of the night she wants to play, so that will take a little bit of an adjustment. She follows me all around the house, but I think that's because she may be a little insecure right now because of the new surroundings. She is fitting very well in our house. Thank you for giving Winter to us.
Mo Barr
No nonsense here, you fill out an application, they check out your living quarters and you get your beautiful dog to take home. Food, collar and photo included with your pup. Everyone here is helping you to take home a pup to love rather than an uncomfortable interrogation or video to watch with a mandatory purchase or else attitude like other shelters. Get your dog here the staff is incredible!
Glenn Rawski
We adopted a little Yorkie Mix six years ago. Dots (a/k/a Bella) she has been great
Zeke Dolezalek
I have volunteered some of my time at the Canine Rescue and helped with waling and playing with the dogs! They always seem to be clean, well-fed, and very healthy. Sadly, there always seems to be quite a few pups in the kennels! If you are looking for a new addition to your family, definitely check here first! The staff is great and super friendly! Ask if you can see the puppies!

HIGHLY PROFESSIONAL, HEARTWARMING DOGS, WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE
The Chicago Canine Rescue was the amazing birthplace of our Rescue puppy many years ago. Their processes were very professional, and protocols stringent, however, this was the blessing of a lifetime for my little family. It was love at first sight.
Our puppy was weeks old when we completed our application & visit. We had basically adopted a “newborn,” so being blessed with the organization’s guidelines and recommendations it was so helpful acclimating to a very lovable, energetic pup! All we wanted to do was play with her and love her but thanks to the structure of partnering with our foster parents, obtaining pet insurance, seeking out training, requiring our pup to be chipped, and neutered, selecting a family vet, locating an emergency vet, finding her diet and exercise plan, and potty training, it was all so very helpful. It retrospect, acclimating a pet, especially a baby pet to a family with a working parent and school-aged children was just a blessing. Having a gracious foster family to mentor our family through the years had been the best partnership.
Pets like people, require long term pet insurance and a savings account for health care. In addition, Pets are also born with pre-existing conditions as ours was, so having the pet insurance immediately was key. No regrets. Because she had kennel cough at birth, I purchased a vest for her so I wouldn’t pull at her throat for commands to hurt her throat. It worked for us as she grew, and she was very strong so it worked even better when other dogs were around. I would be able to pull her back and pick her up in 2 easy moves if a situation was not good for her with other dogs or strangers. No issues. She would easily slip out of her collar she was too smart.
We took the time to train her with one word commands and said thank you and spoke to her all the time in a conversational voice, and she responded immediately. ( Natural treats like her food are the best. We learned the hard way when she became very ill due to fatty treats.) She also barked and behaved in a protection mode. I acknowledged her one day when she was barking, by saying “thank you for protecting me” she stopped immediately and went on her way to something else. I started doing this each time I realized she was communicating to me and was thankful that I would protect her and said "Momma is protecting you", and she understood. From then on, I made a point to keep it simple with her commands if I needed her to understand - “Good walk, thank you for the walk, good poop, good sleep, good paw (when we trained) good play, good stop, good sit, good stay, good come.” I would clap if she peed on the pee pads! She knew when she did good and not so good by my facial expression and I watched her tail direction and the hair on her back to see how she was reacting. She loved her toys, to sit out in the nice weather and our family adored her. We would cuddle with her and I didn’t have be harsh with her at all during training. She just knew by my tone. I realized the tone I trained her in was the tone I had to speak to her in when she needed disciplining Otherwise, she was very confused if I raised my voice. No one tells you that. The Target pee pads are the best for potty training (layering too) or if your pet becomes ill and has accidents or throws up. Some salt used for snow, burns their paws, so my only regret is I had trained her as a pup in boots. I washed her paws gently each time we came in for a walk due to the geese, raccoons, and other animals in the suburbs that end up in the area (and leave droppings) since we were by a park, (which helped). Giving her a sponge bath and dried her with towels & blankets each time after walks helped as well, as I let her on the furniture.
The Chicago Canine Rescue provided the most amazing foster parents, and most enriching experience, and truly greatest blessing in sweet beloved baby girl. We didn’t rescue our loving dog, she rescued us. LOVE THEM.
Giggles Boss
We have had Boss (original name, it fit his personality) for over 2 years now. This place is a wonderful place to adopt a dog from. Boss was a great addition to our family, we recently added a 2nd dog. We got him a younger brother from a different organization. This place was prompt with a call back, gave us all the paperwork we needed. Id recommend this place to anyone.
LML
CCR really cares about the animals in their care. The pet adoption process was thorough and informative. The facilities are clean & well-kept. So happy to have adopted my best friend from CCR 🐶♥️. …
Joe Perez
What a cool place!
I had no idea when I first arrived, but CCR has a very unique "volunteer" program. Pretty much anyone can go in, show ID, read and agree to some rules, and then they will loan you a dog & leash, and you can take the dog out for a walk around the neighborhood!
Granted, the nearby park is "no dogs allowed," but it's a quiet neighborhood with sidewalks and grassy bits.
Pictured is Cleo. She's about 3 months old, and was a little nervous at first, but really perked up as soon as we got outside.
Louise Palvig Edwards
Chicago Canine Rescue is a wonderful place with dedicated staff with big hearts and the most amazing dogs.
I picked multiple awesome dogs to play with...But, clearly one of them ("Charm") only had eyes for me, skirting all the toys and great distractions to plop at my feet. She did the same when my husband came to meet her...
So for the past 1 1/2 years, she has been our #1 family member. She comes on vacations, she goes to the park and the woods. She takes 3 long walks a day and conducts multiple backyard squirrel investigations.
She never lets us out of her sight, except for naps! She makes strangers smile even if they are in a bad mood.
And, for that and more... We love Chicago Canine Rescue!
Anna brought 'Charm' to us to do a home visit after we applied to adopt her. (Anna was just about as excited as we were that Oakley was coming to live with us).
Can you imagine how many times shelter staff falls in love with a dog and works hard to find them a home where they will have the best life possible...and then has to quickly move on to help the next one.
I can't thank Chicago Canine Rescue enough, and also the pilots that flew our dog in from Oklahoma to the shelter (we named her Oakley to honor her roots).
I'd like to recognize the wonderful staff at Chicago Canine Rescue and all the volunteer dog walkers. I smile every time I drive to Marianos, seeing all the dogs being walked in the woods by staff and volunteers.
Everytime a dog is adopted, they help another dog ...They get attached, but focus on each dog's happy ending and then move on to help another.
So, thank you Chicago Canine Rescue for sharing your love and overtime to bring us remarkable pets. We love them so much, as we do Chicago Canine Rescue!!!

Staff and organizer very patand under standing to the need of my family and dedicated to the well being of the dog. Rain NOW Buddy is a great dog still settling in but coming out of his shell slowly but surely and is full of live

I have such a great time volunteering here. The staff are so friendly and they take such great care of all of the dogs there. This is a wonderful place to find a home for a pup in need.
Kim Saydak
The staff is very kind and caring. Maybe a little too kind. I rescued a dog and had to return him to the CCR after 3 weeks in my home. I am an experienced dog owner. Was told the dog was potty trained. Not true. Was told the dog was friendly. Somewhat true. He could be, but he bit me on my arm unprovoked
and then bit a friend of mine on her face while she was sitting on the floor giving him a belly rub. He also tried to attack almost every dog we encountered on walks down the street or in my building. I recommended he go to a foster home for awhile and definately not to go to a family with kids.
Sadly. They didnt take my advice. He is already up on the page as adoptable. Hope he doesnt bite anyone else
Kathleen Weiss
Adopted my loving dog from here! This place cares so much for their dogs. You can also stop by whenever they're open to walk as many dogs as you want. It's awesome and a lot of fun.
Rosalia Cusumano
There are so many dogs and cats without homes... this is a non kill shelter where you can go walk dogs and spend time with them and you could see it in their faces it makes them smile! The directors here at the canine rescue are very nice people and the staff is wonderful!
David Seglin
Great dogs! Great staff!
Dave Johnson
We are adopting a dog from here and the process has been fun and painless. My kids enjoyed the opportunity to meet the dog beforehand hand and it gave us a chance to make sure we are ready for this responsibility.
Gary Makino
I have adopted two dogs from CCR over the last few years. They take in dogs and cats from other shelters, many of which would be euthanized due to medical issues. Medical treatment and sometimes surgery is performed to save the lives of their canine and feline residents. They depend on donations of pet food, supplies, toys and treats, and of course cash to continue their operations. Volunteers are always welcome to walk the dogs and help out at the shelter. Fostering of the dog residents helps to acclimate them to a home environment and allows CCR to take in more cats/dogs.
Jayne Wags
My husband's a vet and we got the runaround from lab rescue groups and told we'd have to wait months to adopt. Honestly, these breed rescue groups seem only interested in collecting their $25 application fee and then ignoring requests to meet dogs. Meanwhile, their incompetency means other labs are out there waiting to find their forever homes. And maybe even euthanized. After pleading our travails to friends, we were referred to Chicago canine rescue and they immediately found us a lab in need. They are not control freaks and driven by ego as some of these breed rescue groups are. We are so thankful for these wonderful people at CCR!!
Mike Mowski
We got our adorable pup from Chicago Canine Rescue. The adoption process was easy. She has brought a lot of joy to our home !

In October of 2016 our belived dog Radar died suddenly from stage 5 canine lymphoma. I have a hearing impairment due to nerve damage in my right ear. Radar helped me with my hearing. Needless to say we were devastated.Shortly after Radar died, I was surfing the internet, and came across Chicago Canine Rescue. I saw a photo of the cutest puppy named Hinata. Amazingly, she looked a lot like Radar. Even though we had decided no more dogs until we grieved Radar, I couldn't resist wanting to meet Hinata. I called Chicago Canine rescue and was informed that I needed to fill out an application with references including our vet. The staff was wonderful. I can't imagine anyone giving the staff a bad review. They are dedicated, loving, caring, and loyal. They are also incredibly busy. They have many dogs in their care and they do a phenomenal job of caring for their canine residents.
I went to visit Hinata twice. Each time the facility was clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. My adoption counselor was Anna. She was amazing. She kept me informed of the process. On November 3rd, Anna came to our home for a home check. She had Hinata with her. Anna was extremely informative about Hinata's health records, diet, deworming etc. Additionally, she was a very nice young lady.
We renamed Hinata. Her new name was Lucky because we felt very lucky to have found her. Lucky is now 6 months old. We think she is part Kelpie. Our dear friend, Judy Leornardis, of Dog Training Now in Schaumburg Illinois has been training her. Our goal is to train her to be a therapy dog. Additionally, I want to train her to be a service dog to help me with hearing. We are so thankful to Chicago Canine Rescue. They make sure that every one of their dogs has a good home. I highly recommend them. They are absolutely wonderful.
Nancy Motomochi
Adopted our dog there in November 2014. She is the sweetest older girl ever. She is 7 year old Shar-Pei Coon Hound mix. We just love her to death and was the best experience ever at CCR. Will definitely go back when and if my 14 year old passes, so my new girl has a companion.
James Foster
